Then, our search
for paranormal activity takes us

into the island's

the truly chilling tunnels
beneath the prison.

We are hearing something

into Spike Island Prison,

considered the most haunted
location in all of Ireland...

whatever we reached out to...

in between 40-foot walls.

Probably when the prison closed

in the 2000s,
they bricked all this up.

But whatever we heard,

whatever drew us
out of that cell,

whatever you saw at the top
of the moat had nowhere to go.

And this K2 feels like
it led us right to this wall.

still going crazy.

we been chasing?
- I don't know.

[Josh] I mean, we've heard
so many different stories here.

The prisoners in those
abandoned cells
that we were in,

they thought
it was something demonic.

Could it have been
this "Gaunt Gunner"

that people have seen
all over this island--

could it have been
that chain man,

Henry Sweers, who escaped?

We heard those noises, right?

I feel like we're hot
on the trail of something,

but I have more questions
than answers at this point.

Agreed.

[Josh] With our investigation
hitting a literal brick wall,

and the sun about to rise,
we need to regroup.

After two long nights
imprisoned on Spike, we head

to the mainland to gather
more leads, and frankly,

to take a mental health break.

Here we go.

Spike Island behind us

for at least a little while.

See that right there?
That is the tallest church

in all of Ireland.

- Really?
- I don't know.

Just making this up as I go

it looks tall
though, doesn't it?

Terrible tour guide.

we can come ashore

We're docking at Cobh,
the largest city

in Cork Harbor.

Operating as a major port
for over four centuries,

it saw the Titanic off
on its final voyage

and is a thriving
tourist destination today.

It feels so good to be
off Spike Island.

This town is so cute, too.

- It's so cheerful.

about the abandoned village

seem to trace to one spot,

Dr. Death's house,

which sits directly in front
of the now-empty lot

where two soldiers
once had their throats slit.

We head there to see if we can
experience the strange sounds

and shadow figures
that have been reported.

So we've got
some structures here.

[Heather, whispering] Wow.

[normally] A lot
of overgrown structures.

[Josh]
Is this a way in?

Oh, yes.

Look at this place.

Stuff is growing
inside the buildings.

[Heather]
Yeah.

Look at that.
That is the house

of Dr. Death.

The guy who dug up corpses

and did gruesome autopsies
on them.

So that house they tore down
must have been here,

behind the doctor's house.

Let's explore this whole plot
and see what we can find.

It feels like the biggest thing
in this village

are these shadow figures.

So, keep your eyes open
for shadows.

the back of the property.

I do think we have
a lot of this island left

to explore, though.
- And we still have to check
out the tunnels.

I think we should get
a couple of infrared cameras

and run them out
to this part of the property.

At least we can
leave those running.

[Josh] Before we leave,
we set up two security cameras

behind Dr. Death's house,
hoping to catch the source

of the sounds we heard.

Then we returned to the prison,
eager to investigate

the tunnels located
beneath its ramparts

that are said to be rife
with paranormal activity.

- [Josh] Back inside
the prison walls.
- [Heather] Comforting.

[Josh] Remember the first night
we were on the other side

of all this, down in the moat,
and that's where we felt like

something led us into that
tunnel that was bricked up.

And we now know
from our eyewitnesses in town,

you can get into this tunnel
system from this side

of the ramparts.

That looks like a way
into a tunnel, doesn't it?

[Heather]
Sure.

[Josh]
Yep.

Oh, ho, ho.

Look at that.

OK, so these tunnels,
because they were used

to store gunpowder, are kept
at a constant temperature.

I want to use
a digital thermometer,

measure those temperatures,
see if we can record any of

those temperature drops--
our one witness, Amy,

said that
it got frigid in here, like

in a heartbeat.
- And I want to use the K2 meter

because when we were
down in that moat,

we were getting tons
of EMF hits.

This tunnel has to connect
to that dead end we were at

down there.

on that side of the wall,

so keep a very close eye
on that.

This place is so spooky.

It's stable,
so the witnesses are right,

the temperature is constant
in the tunnels.

There is cold air coming
from this corridor for sure.

In 1925, British explorer
Percy Fawcett became the stuff

of legend after he disappeared
without a trace in the Amazon

while searching for
the mythic city he called Z.

But before he vanished forever
in the uncharted jungle,

he spent three years
in the confines of Spike Island.

From 1903 to 1906,
he was stationed

at the island's fortress,

serving as an artillery officer.

And Spike Island apparently
shaped the rest

of Fawcett's life, solidifying
his obsession with the occult.

Fawcett began conducting
seances on the island,

attempting to communicate
with the fortress's many dead.

After leaving Spike,
his fascination with

the unexplained only escalated,
exploring spiritualism,

writing for
occult publications,

and motivating his final, doomed
expedition for the city of Z.

It seems
those Spike Island ghosts

really do
get under your skin.

This is exactly what
those witnesses described.

The temperature, I mean,
look where we are, right?

- [Josh] It's 50 degrees.
- [Heather] Yeah.

- It's not 44.

Like, where did that
cold blast come from?

I don't know if something was
chasing us out of there

or helping us get out.
- [Josh] But either way, look.

I feel like I'm in
"The Shawshank Redemption"

right now.
- [laughing]

We escaped from Spike Island.

Freedom never felt so good.

Across three long,
unforgettable nights,

confined on Spike,
we captured a spectrum

of stunning evidence.

Run.

- [screaming]
- [bleep].

What the [bleep] was that?

The paint just fell
off the wall.

We had the image Heather took
in the abandoned cells analyzed

by photography experts.

That is a face.

You can see the bridge
of the nose, the black sockets

for eyes.

They could find
no digital explanation

for the apparent face
frozen in the glass.

And we confirmed no one
was physically present.

Stranger still, the face only
has dark voids where the eyes

should be, matching with
reports of the ghost

known as The Gaunt Gunner.

But that was far from
the only infamous spirit

we may have encountered.

Throughout the investigation,
we heard multiple

unexplained metallic noises.
- [clanging]

- [Josh] Oh, you hear it?
- [Heather] Yeah.

[Josh]
After using audio analysis
software to compare the sounds,

the ones we heard outside
the abandoned cells...

[metallic sounds]

...and behind the house
of Dr. Death...

[metallic sounds]

were seemingly debunked,

being a direct match

for the banging
of a steel flagpole,

most likely naturally
carried on the wind

from a vessel moored
in Cork Harbor.

However, there was another
sound identified that would

prove much more disturbing--
the metallic scrape

heard in the punishment block...

[scraping]

...in the abandoned cells...
- [scraping]

- [screaming]
- Go, go, go.

...and then a third time
in the tunnels.

- [scraping]
- [gasps]

All were close matches
to the sound of chains dragging

on concrete, of course that's
not something mere wind can do,

and even stranger, it lines up
with the sounds associated with

the notorious spirit of
two-time escapee Henry Sweers.

[metallic sounds]

[Josh] And there was one more
hidden horror to be discovered.

After scrutinizing hours of
audio recorded during her many

call and response sessions
in the prison,

Heather discovered
something terrifying.

[Heather] Do you see anything
in this room?

Cameras are totally clear.

There's nothing
in there with you.

Heather identifies
the word "pain."

Pain was certainly something
that notoriously brutal

19th century prison guard
William Reddy was
very familiar with,

as were the thousands
of Irish inmates

tragically held here
over the centuries.

I've been fortunate,
or perhaps that should be

unfortunate, to investigate
many strange places

in my long career,
and I can safely say

few shook me like Spike.

Which is why, as soon
as we were off the island

for good, we went straight for
the ultimate Irish pick-me-up.
