Venus, one of the clinic's more unusual pets,

isn't eating and seems out of sorts.

Venus, she's normally very active and playful

and it's very clear she doesn't feel well.

She's not interested in eating.

I'm very anxious, to make sure that she's okay.

Venus, the six-year-old female axolotl,

she started being less active last week,
she's not really eating.

It's not every day that we see axolotls in the clinic.

I get pretty excited, when I see a species like this,

that I don't see on a regular basis.

They are called actually Mexican walking fish,

but they're not fish at all.
They're actually amphibians.

But the problem is, is that very little is known about axolotls medically.

Venus, she has her own little world in her tank

and when she wants something,

she definitely lets you know that she wants something

and she's definitely interactive,

she's clearly happy and joyful

and I really love her very deeply.

I'm very attached to her.

So, tell me what's been going on?

So, normally she's very active, very interactive.

She doesn't like to be handled,

but she plays and she really likes to be hand fed,

she won't eat anything you just drop in there.

And when she was really excited about something,

like, if she got a treat.
Yeah.

She would do this little dance and it was so cute,

now she's my screensaver, 'cause, you know, when she's well...

That's the normal personality.
... look, she dances around.

So, over the weekend, she... she wasn't acting herself,

but she has periods when she kind of withdraws

and wants to be left alone anyway.

But I was watching her,

because she didn't seem as interested in food.

She looks thin to me,
has she always been this body condition,

or you have seen if she's lost weight recently?

She's... I think she's lost weight recently.
Okay.

Axolotls can be very sensitive,

but yet, mysterious little creatures.

Even though not a lot is known medically about axolotls,

it doesn't take a genius to understand that

an animal that's not eating isn't gonna be around for very long.

Yeah, for her not wanting to really move much at all.

And so normally, if you would touch her,

she would totally freak out.

And I caught her with the net on the first try this morning.

I've had her since she was tiny

and they can live to be in their teens,

if they're healthy and well cared for

and just seeing her not feeling well,

it's heart wrenching, you know.

One of the most common things I see with this species

is metabolic bone disease.

Are you familiar with that?
Yes, yes.

Okay, yeah.
I take care of it in people.

Oh, there you go, that must be interesting.

Metabolic bone disease is actually fairly common in axolotls

and if that's what going on with Venus,

that would make a lot of sense of why she's not eating,

why she's not as active.

So, our first steps are gonna be to get a blood sample from Venus

and check her calcium levels

and then we're also gonna radiograph her
and check her bone density.

If the radiographs show signs

consistent with metabolic bone disease,

this case could take a very grave turn.

Any of the reptiles and amphibians just to brace yourself ahead of time,

it's a... it can be a slow ... get process.

To get them better.

I'm hoping that, you know, the doctor can tell me

what's wrong and she'll feel better.

This is Venus, the axolotl,

who's presenting for being interested in eating, but not eat...

being able to eat and being more lethargic.

That is cold water. They love it though.

Axolotls can breathe in both air and in water,

but the fact that that makes it easier for her,

doesn't make this slippery little girl any easier for me.

Huh. Yeah, we're gonna be using the paper towel.

Drawing blood from Venus is gonna be pretty tricky.

Hold her front half of her body like that.

She should be fighting me and she is just really not.

That is all we're gonna get.

She's being really good for this.

I know, like too good.

Just a second, I know, she's a cute little thing,

she should be a very animated little animal,

very frisky and for her to just let me hold her

and draw blood like that concerns me greatly.

While Venus' blood work is running,

we're gonna take some radiographs

and see if we can figure out what's causing Venus' unusual behavior.

In the front of the clinic,

Pearl, a two-year-old pot-bellied pig,

comes in vomiting and extremely weak.

We brought in Pearl today.

We woke up Saturday and she was very sick

with vomiting and diarrhea

and we thought she was getting better,

but over the next couple of days, she got worse,

she was just obviously was not feeling well and not in a good place.

We've had Pearl since she was tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny,

she'll be three and we have three kids.

But the one year old was really a baby when she was a baby

and they would steal each other's Sippy cups

and drink each other's milk,

so they really kind of grew up together. .

Oh, Pearl, you look very sick.

Honey. Oh-di-doe, this isn't a good honey.

Oh, my, you do not feel good at all.

Oh, honey.
It's alright, baby.

Pearl is actually very easy to work with

and do anything I need to do with her. T

hat actually kind of concerns me,

because this is not normal pig behavior.

Either she is the most docile pig that has ever walked the planet,

or she is really ill.
Oh. You don't feel good.

Her color looks terrible too.

Aww. You can tell she's miserable.

So, she's been having a lot of vomiting and diarrhea?

She had vomiting and diarrhea for a few hours.

Two hours.

Does she tend to get into anything that she shouldn't eat?

No.
Not really.

There's really nothing out there for her to get into.

She's in the yard?

She's in a penned in yard and... or in our house.

Inside.

The pig used to jump into my daughter's little chair on the ground

and then my daughter would push her out of it

and she'd get back in it,
and, you know, it was a tug of war with toys,

with milk bottles, with everything.

One, two, three, there we go.

Oh, boy, you're not even screaming for that. Alright.

She's awful thin, is she... has she been this thin?

No, no, no, no. This is just in the last couple of days,

I mean, it was just like, she's normally like--

Pearl's actually like a sister to their two-year-old little girl,

but right now, Pearl's in a world of trouble,

she's got very severe diarrhea,

she's vomiting, she's very, very thin.

I wanna try to do a quick exam if Pearl will let me.

Now, most pigs won't even let you touch them when they're awake.

Boy, for her to even not be screaming right now is crazy.

Aww, baby, I'm gonna feel the tummy.

Has she passed any stool?

I haven't seen her pass stool since...

... Saturday, so after all the diarrhea.

Oh, boy, for a pig to let me take their temperature awake.

You don't even want a pet or a child to be sick

and not feeling good. So, this is bad.

It's amazing how thin she can get in a couple of days.

Right.

Yeah, I know. She got bad pretty quick.

Based on her behavior,

I believe she's in a lot of pain right now and extremely ill.

We're gonna get some blood work running on her

and get her some fluids.

I know she's extremely dehydrated,

because of all the vomiting and diarrhea she's been having.

Alright, shh, shh, oh, sick piggy.

It smells like she's farting.

That's what it smells like.
Well, she probably is.

I'm gonna go straight to masking her under.

That scream that we heard for her to be carried in was nothing,

I mean, it's... it's usually, you know, it's...

... it's louder than anything you can imagine

and she's just... she's not fighting like she would typically fight,

doing things she doesn't wanna do.

Well, she's miserable,

she's been vomiting and having diarrhea all weekend.

Just judging on how fast her heart rate's going

and how tacky her mucus membranes are and everybody else.

She's gonna need some fluids.

My highest priority right now is to get fluids into her

because she's so extremely dehydrated.

A Florida soft shell turtle, rescued from the middle of the road.

He is active.
Rushes in as an emergency.

I brought in a turtle today,

I have a feeling that he was run over,
because he's bleeding.

So, I just found him in the middle of the road.

My first instinct was to cross the car across the street,

to make sure he wasn't gonna get run over by anybody else

and block the roads, which is what I did.

Yeah.

I have a towel in the back of the car,

that I use to go to the beach

and I just used that and wrapped him around
and took him out of the road.

Got some road rash there, sweetie.

Just be very careful, they bite like, so hard.
