Use the pre-built map and fixed amounts of stone and gold to build the strongest castle you can. Then challenge others to storm it, at the end of the siege your castle gets a score!
New map starts you off with a blank canvas on which you can create your ultimate Stronghold.
Load map reloads a previous working map and allows you to continue editing your castle.
Save map saves your current map as a working map allowing you to reload and edit it later.
Lock map saves your map in its final form and prevents any more editing. After it is locked a map will be listed in 'Play a siege' mode.
Leave 'Siege that' mode.

Description:
The Rat combines appallingly poor skill in managing a castle with a shockingly naive grasp of military tactics. Making him one of the most useless opponents in the game!
The Snake has some ability to run his estate, but little stomach for a full on fight. He likes the hired help to do most of his dirty work for him.
The Pig, whilst not being one of the region's best economists, likes a fight. His greed for (other peoples') gold will soon have him 'trying it on', with even the smallest of siege forces...
The Wolf holds his castle in an iron grip, but it is passion for warfare that makes him one of the most feared opponents. Deliberate and cunning, he will use every military trick and tactic at his disposal to win the day.
More than any other lord, Saladin knows how to run the desert economy. He will be in no great rush to lead his forces out into the field, but when he strikes, it will be from a position of power.
Cruel and vindictive, the Caliph is skilled at bringing misery to both his own people and to yours. If he can get his tyrannical act together, his underhand methods of fighting will prove a constant thorn in your side.
This Sultan is more... say... a poet than a warrior, preferring feasting to the humdrum matters of running his own castle. In short... not the sharpest sword in the desert. His people love him, however, and his soldiers will fight well to defend him.
The Lionheart has a reasonable grasp of the regions economy... for a soldier, but it is in the field of battle where he is in his element. Brave and fearless, his ability to siege a castle is second to none.
Emperor Frederick is perhaps the best all round strategist in the desert. There are few weaknesses in his armor and left alone he will over time become a mighty force.
King Philip seeks glory and prestige from his desert adventure. His reckless insistence on the use of his knights as his main fighting force is, more often than not, his undoing.
The Wazir is a mean spirited leader with a fiery temper. His persistent use of horse archers makes him an annoyance, although his siege technique leaves a lot to be desired.
The Emir is a kind hearted and easy going Arab leader. A good all-rounder who knows how to manage his economy effectively as well as how to attack... which he does... in force!!
The Nizar may catch you by surprise if you are unprepared for his swift and silent tactics. On low ground he uses moat to build island-like castles which can be tricky to attack. On high ground he switches to an alternative set of traps to ensnare his enemies.
The Sheriff... the cruelest lord in the land and easily the most underhand. He will use Arab or Crusader alike, along with every dirty castle defense he can lay his hands on, to further his own self-interest.
This retired fighter tends to play things a little more cautiously than he once did. The sight of his knights sallying forth from his castle is still a warning to anyone, however.
The Abbot considers himself entrusted with the defense of the faith. His vindictive monks will continually amass in vast numbers to pull down the walls of their enemies.

(marriage - brewer- who is always drunk)
"Who would have thought it ever possible."
"She brought all the drink with her."
"I hope he likes a drink."
"She stinks of beer."
"She can hardly stand... "
"Well he did like a tipple."
"She's younger than she looks, you know."
"Does she ever wash those rags?"
"They say she sleeps in the beer vat."
"I bet she slurs the vows."
(Tanner marriage- tanner is psychopath with 2 sharp knives)
"A dangerous liaison, I'd say."
"He looks a little sheepish."
"They say she killed her last husband."
"Beautiful, but plain mad you know."
"Isn't he devoted to his pet cow?"
"Not often the tanner gets hitched eh?"
"Look, she's brought her knives into church"
"It's a brave man that would marry the tanner"
"I don't know who is the craziest, him or her."
"Can you smell beef??"
(Mother marriage - nice well-balanced person)
"Oh, doesn't she look lovely."
"This is her 8th husband you know."
"They say she had 5 offers of marriage."
"Is there any free drink after the service?"
"She's my distant cousin you know."
"She's been looking for a husband for the last 15 years, I'm so happy for her."
"It's six or seven children she's got now."
"They are spending a week in the marsh for their honeymoon."
"She's too good for him, I'd say."
"Well, this is the longest wedding service I've ever sat through."

"These rations are meagre, we want more!"
"Could use a little extra food, my trousers are slipping."
"Rations are a bit small, m'lord."

"With you paying me this much, I will soon be able to afford another chair."
"You are the most generous lord in the land, sire."
"You're sure you can afford to pay this much, sire?"
"A bribe, great I love bribes, I do."
"Your tax policy is most enlightened lordship."
"How about a larger bribe... only joking, sire!!"
"The people are very pleased with these bribes, master."
"A small bribe, how novel, I like it."
"A bribe, so let me get this right, you pay us money?"
"You are very kind to be giving us these small handouts, sire."
"I heard you're handing out bribes, oh I mean alms to the poor, great."
"No taxes! Well that makes a nice change."
"This policy of no taxes is the least we could expect."
"No taxes is one thing, but what about a small gift, go on... "
"No taxes is good taxes, that's my motto."
"Extortionate taxes are crippling me, I have very little left for myself."

(tutorial text)
-1
Welcome to the desert, my lord!
This tutorial will teach you the techniques you need to know in order to get your castle up and running!
-2
Looking around
The first task is to find a suitable place to build. To scroll around the map, push the mouse pointer to the edge of the screen.
-3
Setting up Your Settlement
The first thing you need to do in Crusader is find a suitable place to site your castle. Left click on the 'Manor House' building, then find a flat, empty piece of ground on the map.
Move your mouse over the main screen until your keep appears. Once you are happy with the position, left click to place your keep.
Wood has automatically been transferred from your starting goods into your stockpile. The wood is now available for you to use in your construction.
-4
New Workers
In addition to the manor house and the stockpile you should see a campfire. Move the mouse pointer over it. The halo that appears is your population growth indicator.
The more popular you are, the faster it will fill and the quicker your population will grow. Every time the indicator makes one full rotation, a peasant will arrive and stand by the campfire until work becomes available.
If the halo turns red you are unpopular. The halo will then be showing you how quickly people will leave your castle.
-5
Starting Food
On the top left of the screen you can see that there is plenty of food among your starting goods but to use it you will need to build a granary.
-6
Food Stores
Left click on the granary building and move your mouse pointer in the area near the keep. When the granary building appears, left click to place it.
The food in your starting goods will be transferred to the granary. Your peasants now have an ample supply of food to eat.
-7
Entering Buildings
Right click to exit the build mode, then left click on the granary you have just built to bring up the granary panel.
-8
Using the Granary Panel
This panel lets you see your food details and allows you to make changes to your rationing.
On the right of this panel there are five plates with varying amounts of food on them. These symbolize the different ration settings from 'no rations' up to 'double rations'. At the moment rations are set to the default of 'full rations'.
-9
Setting a ration level.
Left click on the plate with the most food on it to set your rations to double.
Due to your generous rationing, you are now gaining a big bonus to your popularity each month and the popularity symbol has changed to a smiling face! The downside to this is that you are consuming food at twice the rate you were before.
You can view the rate of consumption by watching the speed of the bar in the granary or you simply see the units of food disappear from your granary on the map.
-10
Setting Taxes:
Next right click to leave the granary and left click on your manor house to bring up the Keep panel. This panel lets you view your tax details and allows you to change your tax rate.
You can set your taxes to anything from a generous bribe all the way up to a downright cruel tax. Taxes are currently set to the default of 'no taxes' so you are not gaining or losing any money.
-11
Effects of Setting Taxes.
Left click on the right arrow until taxes are set to 'mean'. You will now have a little gold coming in to your treasury each month, but you are suffering a big hit to your popularity due to your mean tax rate.
-12
Scribe Reports
The scribe shows your popularity, gold and population size. His expression reflects your popularity.
The report book he is holding will help you to find critical information about your settlement. The large number at the top shows your popularity rating. Left click on the report book.
-13
Reports
The reports panel is now visible. Left click on the popularity button.
-14
Popularity
Here you see the effects of your actions on castle popularity for the coming month.
Making changes to your tax rate and rationing are the two main ways of manipulating your popularity. With popularity over 50, people will come to the castle; below 50 they will start to leave.
-15
Continue
Your tax rate and rations level will now be set to their original starting levels. Now right click again to leave the report.
-16
Expanding
Now you have a grasp of how to place buildings and manage your taxes, food and popularity, let's take a look at how to expand your settlement further.
-17
Structure Interface.
Running along the bottom left of the screen are six shields. These are the building category buttons, which change the type of buildings displayed on the building selection scroll above them.
Move your mouse pointer over these shields. The shields will highlight and above the building selection scroll you will see a description of the button.
-18
Gathering Wood
Left click on the industry building category (hammer). Click on the woodcutter's hut in the building selection scroll and build four woodcutter's huts close to the trees. Finally, right click to stop building.
-19
Gathering Wood
Now you see that four of the peasants around your campfire have turned into woodcutters and are working at cutting down trees. Wood will soon begin to arrive in your stockpile
-20
Food
Now you need to start increasing your food stocks. Left click on your granary again.
-21
Food Supply
The amount of food you have left is shown in absolute units and also monthly supply. Right click to exit the granary screen.
-22
Hunting
Left click on the farm building category (apple). Now place four hunters posts and the remaining peasants will become hunters.
-23
Hunting
When the hunters have prepared their meat, they will place it in your granary. Aim to have at least enough food coming in to cover demand.
-24
Building Houses
The bottom set of numbers on your scribes report show your current population followed by your available housing. It is currently 8 out of 8 which means the housing inside your manor house is at full capacity.
-25
Building Houses
Click on the town buildings category (house) and build a hovel.
-26
Housing
Your available housing will increase and your population will begin growing again. Each hovel you build will hold up to 8 people. Your settlement is growing, but so of course are the numbers of mouths to feed!
-27
Other Controls.
Now you will learn a few additional interface controls that are useful when playing the game.
-28
Rotating The Map
To rotate the map, move the mouse pointer into the middle of the screen then press and hold the right mouse button. The camera interface icons will appear. Move the mouse pointer upwards onto the rotate icon.
-29
Zooming The Map
To zoom out, press the right button again and move the mouse pointer to the right, over the zoom icon and release the button. To zoom back in, repeat the process.
-30
Full Screen Mode
To go full screen, press and hold the right button and move the mouse pointer to the left over the full screen icon and release. To go back to normal mode, repeat the process.
-31
Seeing Behind Things
Press and hold the right mouse button again to bring up the camera interface.
This time move the mouse pointer down onto the flatten icon. This will pull down tall objects such as mountains and walls and allow you to see behind them. Release the button to allow the landscape to spring back up.
-32
Tutorial Complete
Congratulations! You have completed the tutorial! You are now ready to start the first mission of the Crusader campaign. Would you like to continue playing this map?

The desert is an inhospitable place so you will need to find an area of lush, green grassland near an oasis to grow crops. Left click on the farm building category (apple). Now place two dairy farms and two apple orchards on the grassland and the remaining peasants will become farmers.
-36
Farms
Food crops take a little time to grow. If you wish to cut the waiting time, press the increase game speed key [+]. To return to normal game speed, press the decrease game speed key [-].
-37
Farms
When the farmers have collected their baskets of apples and wheels of cheese they will place them in your granary. Aim to have at least enough food coming in to cover demand.
-38
Multiple Food Types
By the way, growing multiple food types makes your peasants happy. Whenever your peasants get to eat multiple food types, you will receive a small popularity bonus.
-39
Making weapons
Now that you have peasants, gold and resources you can start building an army. Archers are one of the most useful troops in the game but in order to recruit an archer you will need to make a bow.
Bows are made from wood at the fletcher's Workshop. Click on the weapons buildings category (shield) and build a fletcher's workshop.
-40
Storing weapons
Once a bow is made it will need to be stored in the armory. It is advisable to place your weapon's workshops near your armory to minimize the time taken to deliver a weapon. Click on the castle buildings category (castle) and build an armory.
-41
Recruiting troops
Finally to recruit an archer click on the castle buildings category (castle) and build a barracks.
-42
Recruiting troops
Left click on the barracks building and recruit four archers. If a troop type is greyed out then you either do not have enough available peasants, do not have enough gold or do not have the necessary weapons to recruit the troop. The newly recruited troops will form up outside the barracks.
-43
Recruiting mercenaries
There are two other buildings that allow you to recruit troops. Unlike the barracks, the mercenary post and Bedouin stockade house specialist troops that do not require weapons but cost more gold than the standard troops.
Click on the castle buildings category (castle) and build a mercenary post.
-44
Recruiting mercenaries
Now left click on the mercenary post and recruit two Arabian bows.
-45
Attacking enemies
Scouts have reported a lion languishing on the outskirts of the village. Select your archers and bowmen and click on the lion to command your troops to attack it.
What generalship sire! The village is safe again.

Mission 1
Nicaea, Arrival in The Holy Land
Upon arrival in Constantinople discipline breaks down and the starving crusaders begin ransacking the surrounding countryside for food. Emperor Alexios quickly arranges sea transportation and a military escort to keep the crusaders moving.
>>101-----
(mission one brief)
Take control of the city of Nicaea with help from the Greek allies. The Turks will be unprepared for the attack so the battle should prove simple. The journey to Jerusalem will need financing if the crusade is to succeed so raise gold by whatever means necessary.
>>102-----
(mission one objectives)
>>103-----
(mission one strategy/hints)
Once your economy is up and running, begin selling stone and apples to raise gold.
Placing your granary on the oasis will speed up apple production.
Increase your rations and put your taxes up to raise more gold.
>>104-----
Mission 2
Heraclea, The Journey South.
The crusaders' march across Anatolia is difficult. The Turks burn all crops on their retreat southwards and the westerners have found themselves ill equipped to deal with the freezing temperatures. After some minor skirmishes with the enemy the army is left starving and exhausted.
>>105-----
(mission two brief)
Rebuild the wheat farms around the city of Heraclea to provision the army. Local reports suggest Turkish raiders have been operating nearby.
>>106-----
(mission two objectives)
>>107-----
(mission two hints)
You will need to strike a balance between bread and spear production.
Three wheat farms and one mill will produce enough flour for about eight bakeries as long as you place them carefully.
Try using a few groups of spearmen to 'herd' the mounted archers.
Turning off bread consumption will allow you to reach your bread target much quicker.
>>108-----
Mission 3
Antioch, The Counter-Siege.
Antioch was a strong and difficult city to attack. Fortunately the crusaders had a spy on the inside. He arranged for one section of the wall to be unguarded allowing the crusaders to stream in through St. George's Gate and take the city.
>>109-----
(mission three brief)
A huge Turkish army is on its way so quickly garrison the city walls and man its towers. All food and trade routes are cut off. Make the most of the limited supplies; it will take a lot of faith to hold Antioch.
>>110-----
(mission three objectives)
>>111-----
(mission three hints)
You will need to use religion to keep your people happy.
Use chapels and half rations to conserve food.
Keep your population relatively low or you'll rapidly run out of food.
Use an even balance of archers and swordsmen to defend your castle.
>>112-----
Mission 4
Krak de Chevaliers, The Siege of Arqah
As the march continues southward, the petty emirs along the way yield to the crusaders agreeing to pay the tributes they demand. Resistance is met at the city of Arqah, which refuses to surrender.
>>113-----
(mission four brief)
The main part of the army is laying siege to Arqah but the men are becoming disheartened. Start construction of a new castle, Krak de Chevaliers and begin Ale production to increase troop morale. There are large bands of raiders nearby that may prove to be a threat.
>>114-----
(mission four objectives)
>>115-----
(mission four hints)
Get your food production and defenses in place first then begin ale production.
Building your keep on the right side of the hill, close to the oasis, will speed up hop production.
Leave plenty of space between buildings to prevent fire from spreading.
Refrain from building inns or you will use up the ale you are trying to collect!
>>116-----
Mission 5
Jerusalem, The Final Assault
Unable to break down Arqah's defenses the crusaders march onwards to Jerusalem. The initial assaults prove fruitless due to the lack of siege engines. The nearest forest is over twenty miles away so the final attack is delayed for weeks.
>>117-----
(mission five brief)
Now the siege towers are ready, lead the main assault against the north wall. Word has come in of a massive Egyptian army marching to relieve Jerusalem so the main fortress must be captured as quickly as possible.
>>118-----
(mission five objectives)
>>119-----
(mission five hints)
Rushing in too quickly will get you roasted by the Arabian fire throwers.
Use your archers to pick off the fire throwers before sending the rest of your troops in.
Fire throwers can only attack troops on open ground, they cannot attack troops that are standing on walls.
>>120-----
Mission 1
Damascus, The Balance of Power Shifts
The vast majority of the cities previously under Nur ed Dins rule accept Saladin as their new leader but a few remain dissident. Damascus is one of the main cities that has rejected Saladin's rule.
>>121-----
(mission six brief)
Assemble the army and march on to Damascus. Bring these rebels to order as an example to the rest using all the resources at your disposal.
>>122-----
(mission six objectives)
>>123-----
(mission six hints)
Don't attack from the front!
Sneak your troops up one side of the castle and punch a hole in the wall with the battering ram.
Use all of your archers and slingers together as one combined group to clear an area of wall defenders.
>>124-----
Mission 2
Kerak, Reynald's Treachery
Reynald of Kerak plunders rich Arab merchantmen in the shipping lanes of the Red Sea thereby breaking the European's truce. Saladin responds by laying siege to his castle.
>>125-----
(mission seven brief)
Reynald is hosting a wedding party in his castle's keep. Lay siege to the castle and tear down the cathedral to show our intent. There's no time to capture the city as reinforcements from Jerusalem are already on their way. Instead teach him a lesson by bringing down the cathedral in the eastern part of Kerak.
>>126-----
(mission seven objectives)
>>127-----
(mission seven hints)
Your assassins are the key to success in this mission. Use them wisely.
Move your assassins in to climb the tall, undefended part of the wall by the canyon but watch out for the swordsmen!
Move the rest of your troops towards the gatehouse, timing it so your assassins reach the top of the gatehouse at the same time.
Move your slingers into the towers to the left and use the Arabian swordsmen to kill off the European swordsmen.
>>128-----
Mission 3
Aleppo, Consolidation of Power
After successfully bruising Reynald's pride, Saladin leaves Kerak marching north to Aleppo as reinforcements pour in from Jerusalem to rescue the wedding guests. The city of Aleppo has thus far resisted Saladin's rule with help from European troops from Antioch.
>>129-----
(mission eight Brief)
Bring Aleppo to its knees using the slave army supplied by the local emir. The city is heavily fortified and you will have to plan carefully to fight your way through its two gates.
>>130-----
(mission eight objectives)
>>131-----
(mission eight hints)
Slaves can change the course of history if used correctly.
Use your assassins to kill off the archers in the lookout towers before sending your slingers in to deal with the crossbowmen on the gatehouse.
Use assassins to capture the gatehouse then set fire to the first part of the castle with your slaves.
Use assassins to capture the inner gatehouse, and set fire to the keep area. Use your swordsmen to take out the enemy crossbowmen.
>>132-----
Mission 4
Horns of Hattin, Battle on the Hill
Saladin makes his move on Jerusalem and the Europeans' main force comes to meet him. Believing they can replenish their supplies later, the Europeans pass through the desert hills without water.
>>133-----
(mission nine brief1)
Saracen forces have the Europeans' encampment trapped on a hill with no water. Although we are outnumbered, the enemy is demoralized so this will be an evenly matched battle. Many of their religious and military leaders are in the camp so a victory here would be a devastating blow for them.
>>134-----
(mission nine objectives)
>>135-----
(mission nine hints)
Set alight to the undergrowth to even up the odds.
Use you horse archers to kill off the archers in the forest before setting the encampment ablaze with your fire throwers.
>>136-----
Mission 5
Jerusalem, Retaking the Holy City
Having decimated the Europeans' main force and capturing or killing many of their figureheads, Saladin arrives at Jerusalem. He pauses, taking time to plan the siege.
>>137-----
(mission ten brief)
This is the final assault. Jerusalem's best defense is its immense city walls, the weakest point being the northeast section. Once the walls have been broken down the Europeans are likely to surrender.
>>138-----
(mission ten objectives)
>>139-----
(mission ten hints)
Wait for their knights to come to you.
Position your fire throwers carefully or they will set your army alight!
Defend your fire ballistae at all costs using your swordsmen and assassins.
Destroy the water pots first then set the city alight.
>>140-----
Mission 1
Belvoir Castle, Delaying Tactics
The remnants of the European army taking refuge in Tyre are on the verge of surrendering to Saladin. Europeans march out from Belvoir Castle and begin raiding Saladin's caravan routes to distract him from Tyre.
>>141-----
(mission eleven brief)
Saladin has taken the bait and is moving on the strategically important Belvoir Castle in the Hinterlands. The garrison cannot hold out indefinitely but must hold off the attackers long enough for Tyre to rebuild its fortifications.
>>142-----
(mission eleven objectives)
>>143-----
(mission eleven hints)
Slowly build up a force of ballistae, swordsmen and crossbowmen to defend your castle.
Build square towers and mount ballistae for added protection.
Use Religion and Ale to help increase popularity and raise gold.
Placing a gatehouse around the back of the castle will speed up iron and stone production.
>>144-----
Mission 2
Tyre, Drawing the Line
After the set back at Belvoir, Saladin sets out on the long march to Tyre.
>>145-----
(mission twelve brief)
The few who have survived Saladin's campaign are taking refuge and are provisioning at Tyre. Saladin is still a good distance away but is not without influence in the region so expect trouble.
>>146-----
(mission twelve objectives)
>>147-----
(mission twelve hints)
Focus your farming efforts on producing bread.
Extend your castle and build a tower next to the oasis to protect it.
It may be better to buy hops instead of growing them so you have more space for your wheat farms.
Try placing patches of pitch along the enemy's preferred routes.
Try balancing your economy using religion and ale, so that you can maintain food on 'no rations'.
>>148-----
Mission 3
Konya, Frederick Barbarossa
Whilst King Philip of France and King Richard of England deal with complications at home, Emperor Frederick of Germany finishes his march through Asia Minor and begins his crusade by laying siege to and capturing Konya.
>>149-----

The German army has suffered severely from hunger on its way through Asia Minor. Hold Konya so the troops may rest and provision themselves.
>>150-----
(mission thirteen objectives)
>>151-----
(mission thirteen hints)
Use Knights and sally forth from the castle to take out enemy siege equipment.
Position Engineers with oil on the battlements for added protection.
Placing swordsmen on your walls will prevent enemy assassins from attacking your archers and crossbowmen.
Use 'bad things' to increase weapon production.
>>152-----
Mission 4
Limassol, The Conquest of Cyprus
After the victory at Konya, Frederick marches towards the town of Seleucia but drowns in the Calycadnus River before reaching his destination. Meanwhile, Richard the Lionheart lands in Cyprus to find his fiancĂŠe has been refused access to dry land by the arrogant Greek ruler. Richard, who in the past has gone to war over smaller issues than this, flies into an impulsive rage and invades immediately.
>>153-----
(mission fourteen brief)
Isaac Comnenus, the independent ruler of the island, is disliked by the people of Cyprus and has fled to take up position nearby presumably awaiting reinforcements. Fortify the city of Limassol and prepare for his return.
>>154-----
(mission fourteen objectives)

Build an apothecary in case of plague.
Leave good-sized gaps between your buildings to prevent fires from spreading.
>>156-----
Mission 5
Jaffa, Recaptured
Isaac pleads with Richard not to put him in iron chains so Richard obliges by having a set of silver chains custom made for him. After a string of military victories against the Arabs, Richard receives word of a plot to usurp his power in England so makes arrangements to visit his kingdom.
>>157-----
(mission fifteen brief)
Saladin has taken advantage of Richardâs disposition and his troops have captured Jaffa. Recapture the city and hold out against the Arab offensive.
>>158-----
(mission fifteen objectives)
>>159-----

Don't spend all your gold on siege equipment; you'll need some left over to rebuild the castle.
With patience, you can take out enemy fire ballistae using trebuchets.
Adding extra gatehouses around the edge of the castle will increase your workers efficiency.
>>160-----
Mission 1
Kingdom of Armenia
As the king begins his voyage home many lesser lords, who have so far failed to make their fortunes, move in to slice up his conquered territories into their own personal states. Some of these lords have acted far from chivalrously taking it upon themselves to plunder these lands.
>>161-----
(mission sixteen brief)
Fortify Chilvan Kale in Armenia. Duc de Puce has been launching assaults from nearby La Roche Guillaume. See to it that this particular Rat does not expand his territory further.
>>162-----
(mission sixteen objectives)
>>163-----
(mission sixteen hints)
You'll need to act fast to survive the Rat's attacks in the early stages of this mission.
Rush building slingers may help to deal with the first attack wave but will leave you with less money to build your castle.
Block the two gaps in the cliff face using walls and gatehouses.
Get bread production up and running early then sell off the excess bread to raise money for troops.
>>164-----
Mission 2
County of Edessa
With Armenia secured, orders come in to deal with the source of the Arab incursion. Local gossip suggests that the Duc Beauregard is imposing high taxes on the people of Saruj in the County of Edessa as a means of financing these mercenaries.

>>168-----
Mission 3
Principality of Antioch
Although the Snake has slithered from the men's grasp, the threat of attacks from hired hands is at an end. With one problem solved another arises. Many of the traders traveling to and from the Principality of Antioch have had their caravans raided on route.
>>169-----
(mission eighteen brief)
It has been discovered that the Truffe brothers are responsible for the recent raids. Take up position in Arzghan, across the river from the Hog and the old Boar's encampments. This is going to be a challenging mission, as we will be outnumbered two to one.

Constructing fire ballistas along your side of the riverbank will make your castle virtually impenetrable.
>>172-----
Mission 4
County of Tripoli
Now that the Truffe brothers have been dealt with, attention can be focused on bringing the Snake to justice. Duc Volpe has taken Duc Beauregard under his wing, giving him control of Castellum Bochee in the County of Tripoli.
>>173-----
(mission nineteen brief)

The Call to Arms
1094 A.D. Turkish armies begin attacking Europeans in Anatolia defiling holy places along the way. Spurred on by the Pope and with promises of plunder and adventure European armies swarm to Constantinople.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
The city is secured before the Egyptian reinforcements have a chance to interfere. With Jerusalem taken, this crusade becomes the first and only crusade to succeed in the goal it set out to achieve. The holy city remains in European hands for 88 years.
(campaign 2 title/intro)
Saladin's Conquest
1174 A.D. Sultan Nur ed Din dies and Saladin assumes control of his Arabian Empire. Before he can recapture the region's conquered cities Saladin must deal with problems at home.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
Saladin sits and speaks with a European emissary inside of his tent as the battle rages on outside. Shortly afterwards the city surrenders unconditionally but Saladin allows many of the Europeans to buy their freedom. The Europeans filter out of the city in two lines, one line for freedom and the other for slavery.
(campaign 3 title/intro)
The Kings' Crusade
The fall of Jerusalem sends a shockwave through Europe. It is said that upon hearing the news, Pope Urban III died of grief. His successor, Gregory VIII, demands that the kings of Europe put their differences aside and unite for a new crusade.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
Soon after the victory at Jaffa, Richard the Lionheart falls ill. Saladin tries to win favor with Richard by sending him daily rations of fresh fruit and water. Before Richard sets sail for England a peace treaty is finalized which would bring peace to the region for five years.
(campaign 4 title/intro)
Crusader States
This skirmish campaign is set in the period soon after the third crusade had fizzled out and is not intended to be historically accurate. It does, however, reflect the mood of the time by showing how territories were carved out by opportunistic lords from the west as a means of supplementing their income. We also have a chance to get reacquainted with some old friends.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
With the rodents dead and the Wolf gone for good, order is at last restored to the region. For the time being at least...
(new campaign 5 title/intro)
The Barons' Crusade
By the end of the 6th Crusade, a weary truce existed in the war ravaged region and it appeared to Pope Gregory IX that the hard won gains made in âholy landsâ were in jeopardy. He set about injecting more energy into the endeavour, widening his net and obliging all Christians to attend crusade sermons. Many nobles from Hungary, France and England heeded his new call to action and the so-called âBarons' Crusadeâ was born.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
Historians never gave the Barons' Crusade the recognition of an actual number, but it was nevertheless one of the more successful adventures into the Levant. Both militarily and diplomatically, it divided the two warring factions of the Ayyubid dynasty and secured the region. From a papal perspective it was also a high point in making crusading a âuniversal Christian undertakingâ. From this point forward, however, the crusaders would find success much harder to come by.
(new campaign 6/intro)
The Seventh Crusade
Following the Barons' Crusade, western powers came to regard a powerful Egypt as the impediment to holding Jerusalem and the region in general. Thus in 1245 Pope Innocent IV gave his blessing to a new venture into Egypt led by Louis IX, King of France, and the Seventh Crusade was born. Encouraged by the death of the Egyptian Sultan they landed at Damietta, a vital Nile sea port. Panicking locals allowed the crusaders to take the port unopposed, meanwhile the Sultan's son and heir Turanshah returns to Cairo to take the throne and lead the defence against the infidel.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
The crusades were over. Louis IX was ransomed for a fortune and released, pledging never to return. Despite breaking his promise, he failed to raise enough interest for an effective eighth crusade. The Mamluk Sultans of Egypt prospered and by around 1290 all significant crusader holdings in the region had fallen to them. Peace however was not to be found, for the Mongols who had already sacked Baghdad in the east, were sweeping ever westward and the war torn region would once again be plunged into conflict.
(new eco campaign 7/intro)
The Realm of the Crocodile
A local bandit leader, styling himself as âThe Crocodileâ is causing problems in the upper reaches of the great river. Whilst not a grave military threat, if not checked his actions threaten trade and supplies at downstream Cairo. The Sultan appoints you as his voice to travel south and deal with this difficulty.
(aftermath)
Aftermath
The Crocodile's hold on the river is broken and as long of your new defences are garrisoned, he will have little choice but to sit and grow old in his mountain fast. The Sultan orders you home to Cairo where your talents will no doubt be put to use in his service, once again.

(mission 28 fake briefing)
This mission is a building mission with no combat or win conditions. We have included it to allow you to learn how to play the game and let you experiment designing your own castle.
Begin by finding a good sight for your castle and build a keep. You should scroll around the map and find a site that has open space, but is close to a quarry area (white boulders). Next site your granary and your starting food will be placed in it. When peasants begin to appear around your campfire build a woodcutter's hut (located in the Industry Buildings category) close to some trees. Once this is done you can start collecting food. Hunter posts are easy to get up and running so begin by placing a few of these.
Continue to expand your castle and experiment with the different building types available. When you run out of peasants are around your campfire build a hovel or two to increase your maximum population. (Make sure you keep increasing your food production as your castle grows)
This should be enough to get you up and running so the rest is up to you!
XXXX
>>186-----
(mission 29 fake briefing)
Objective: Produce 32 units of ale while fighting off attacks by the Rat and the Wolf.
(Make sure you look at the quick start guide to playing Crusader in the readme file for tips on playing the game)
This mission will give you a feel for a siege that might occur midway through the fighting campaign. In this mission the Snake has promised to send troops to attack an enemy army, which is laying siege to one of your counties in exchange for 32 barrels of ale. The Rat and Wolf are intent on besieging your castle and destroying you.
We have started you with a pre-built stronghold to defend. To recruit more troops, select your barracks, which is located in the lower left of your castle, then click on the relevant troop type from the panel. You will need the right amount of weapons and armor in your armory as well as peasants available around the campfire in front of your keep.
Outside of your oil smelter (the large cauldron next to the barracks) you will see a group of engineers holding large pots. The pots contain boiling oil so move these guys onto your castle walls. To pour the oil, select the last icon on their control panel (Pour oil) then select an area or unit. When the red target cursor appears left click to pour the oil.
To the right of the main gate at the front of your stronghold you will see a black moat. This is a pitch ditch full to the brim with oil ready to be ignited. On the wall behind this you will see a lone archer standing next to a brazier. When the enemy comes close, target the pitch with this archer who will fire a flaming arrow to ignite the oil. (Any archer placed next to a brazier will be capable of lighting the pitch).
You don't have the ability to place any additional pitch ditches in this scenario, so make sure you use it well!
Hints & Tips: Build two hops farms and two breweries early in the mission. You don't necessarily need to build a large enough force to secure your castle. You only need to hold out long enough to produce 32 units of ale.
Use your boiling oil well. Once you have poured oil, engineers will return to the oil cauldron, refill their oil pot and wait for your command. Make sure to send them up onto the sections of walls that are most heavily attacked.
Although it is possible to build inns in this mission it is probably best that you don't unless you are having a lot of problems managing your popularity. Inns will distribute the ale you are collecting among your peasantry making the mission a little tougher.

Demo Mission Briefings
With the King gone but a few days, two of our adversaries have dispatched siege forces to probe the strength of our defenses. The King now has need of you earlier than planned. Make haste to the blasted heath to the South, there is a small castle there. Bolster its defenses and hold off the enemy as best you can.
In readiness for his forthcoming crusade, the King has ordered that the royal armory be restocked. Forthwith, your fiefdom is to supply His Majesty's steward with a quantity of weapons. You are to have the shipment of weapons ready for dispatch before the King and his army set forth. A local trader here sells iron, which you can buy to produce some of the weapons needed.
Invasion
A Proclamation
(Demo mission 2 strategy)
Increase the castle resource and food production, then focus on building military units. Use pitch extraction and build additional pitch ditches to hold off the enemy attackers. Try to protect your farms as much as possible. Placing weapons workshops close to the stockpile and the armory will increase their efficiency.
Place pitch ditches in areas you think the enemy are likely to attack, in front of gatehouses, walls, or next to your outlying town buildings.
Make sure you position spearmen on the walls to push off enemy ladders.
Use your mangonel, with its 'attack here' option, to target large groups of enemy soldiers.
(Demo mission 1 strategy)
Start by building a few woodcutter huts, placing them near trees will speed up wood production. Next place apple and dairy farms to get food production up and running. Lastly concentrate on weapons production.
Sell apples and buy iron from the trader, but be careful you don't run out of food.
Once dairy is functioning, you may want to prohibit your population from eating apples. You can set this option in the granary. This will allow you to stock up on apples.
You should plan on building multiple fletcher and blacksmith workshops.

>>192-----
(Eco strategy/hints - Mission One)
Place a few woodcutter's huts and hunter's posts, to start building up your food and wood stocks. Next start to place the dairy farms as you acquire wood. Hops farms should follow and then a couple of brewers workshops.
>>193-----
(Mission Two)
Valley floor space is limited, so use it wisely. Get some apple orchards up and running first, followed by a fletcher's workshop to produce bows and an armory to store them in. Finally build a blacksmith to produce the swords you need.
Although there is no iron on the map you can raise the gold you need to buy it, by either trading at the marketplace or raising taxes.
>>194-----
(Mission Three)
Place some woodcutter's huts and a few wheat farms to get going and then build a mill and a bakery or two to start bread production. Once you have a steady supply of food coming in you will need to protect the production chain. Create some bows and then build a barracks to train a few archers, as these will help you should you experience problems with rabbits eating your crops.
Keep a careful eye on your food stocks as you may experience problems with your wheat supply.
One mill can quite easily supply a number of bakeries with flour.
>>195-----
(Mission Four)
Once you are happy that your food supply is secure, start to build as many quarries as you can. You will need to place many ox tethers to transport the stone back to your stockpile quickly. Finish the missing wall sections in the castle as soon as you have stone available.
Speed is of the essence here so aim to finish the castle as quickly as possible. If the enemy troops arrive before it is complete we are lost.

(Mission Five)
Although your popularity appears stable, you are in a potentially dangerous situation. With double rations you will soon run out of food. You have 2 choices here, continue on as a fearsome tyrant or become a more kindly lord. You can complete the task using either approach and it would be worthwhile repeating the mission and trying both techniques.
If you play as a bad lord, your people will be more productive. Sell this surplus to supply them with them extra food or to bribe your way to popularity.
Playing as a good lord will mean that your people are much less productive. You will need to work harder to feed them. Use the boost you are getting to your popularity to tax them much more heavily.

Eco Mission Briefing
The royal court is soon to host a great banquet. We need you to found a small village for the production of ale and cheese. Find a clearing in the woods to the south of the King's castle and get to work immediately.
The King's armory is depleted. Go to the valley to the east of the castle and begin weapons production. The fertile valley floor is ideal for apple growing which you can use to feed your people. A local trader here trades in iron, which you can buy to produce some of the weapons needed.
We now need to establish a small town to provide grain for the castle. The plains to the west of the castle should provide an ideal location. Go there and get the town up and running.
Our scouts have spotted raiders to the north. We have started building a castle into the mountain pass north of here. Take charge of the construction and finish the castle to block their approach.
Finally, we need to replenish the castle treasury. We have a contract to supply pitch to a foreign buyer. Go to the old castle in the marsh and expand pitch production. A cruel master has ruled the people there. It is up to you whether you continue his policies or adopt a kinder approach.

Crusader Map Names and descriptions
A Resourceful Divide
This is a large two-player map where both of the player's castles are divided by a huge field of resources down the middle. Try not to let your opponent take complete control of the high ground or you will find yourself in a grave situation indeed.
Oasis Struggle
Take the high ground or dominate the valley floor? Either way, precious Oasis space is at a premium.
Too Close for Comfort
This is a two-player map, with both players very close to each other. Expect this one to be quite a challenge with plenty of resources and oasis space to steal from the other player.
The Ford Across the River
Although you have a large supply of resources available to you, you can expect to have a hard time trying to attack your opponent on the other side of the river. A clever opponent will have no problems holding the great ford against his attackers armies.
Height Advantage
The player in the bottom left has a height advantage but the player in the top right has easier access to farmland.
Bow Ridge
The player on the right is surrounded by high cliffs and is likely to suffer from ranged attacks but will find it much easier to enclose their keep.
Centre of the Oasis
Each player starts in the corner of this simple map, but must soon build outwards if they wish to conquer the large majority of the resources in the middle.
Target Zone
A large four-player map where surplus supplies of resources await the players brave enough to travel to the middle of the map. Due to the maps shape, players on opposite sides of the map will have a hard time attacking each other!
Desert Island Blues
One small island, too few resources and plenty of mouths to feed. Something has to give!!
The River
A mighty river runs through this desert, attracting many who would wish to control its bounty.
The Bull's Eye
The further round this unnatural rocky outcrop you get the easier life will become.
Piggy in the Middle
Do you feel as if people are picking on you?
The Great Lake
Be careful whom you choose as an enemy here. You will have to go through your neighbors before you can siege any of your adversaries on the opposite side of the lake.
Green Belt
This is a six-player map, with the oasis at the back of the castles that can be easily protected. Each player has lots of stone, Iron and some pitch. The players may find themselves fighting over the belt of trees in the middle.
Happy Land
An eight-player map where the players in the middle are in a better position than it would first appear. Players in the corners can expect to defend themselves from multiple armies attempting to get at each other's throats.
Close Encounters
This is a large eight-player map, which has plenty of grassland around each player, giving it the checkerboard type appearance. Each player also has plenty of resources to build a large castle.
No Escape
Trapped, in a small rocky enclosure, you must fight for you survival. Choose when to attack carefully as everyone must travel through the center of the map to get to his or her enemies throats.
The Killing Plains
This is a large eight-player map, which has plenty of oasis grassland behind the playersâ castles. There is plenty of stone and iron for each player to use. The players are close together, so expect plenty of killings upon starting the map.
Island Hopping
Stranded on a small landmass in a large open ocean and with little resources at hand, you can expect everything to be in short demand here... including peace.
Green Haven
Will you take refuge in the center? I think not!!
North vs South
This eight-player map is best played in two teams of four. The players on the high ground have all the resources and the players on the low ground have all the oasis grassland. Youâll need to trade with your neighbors if your team is to survive.
Upward Alliance
Three allies must work together to defeat the tyrant entrenched on the mountaintop. The larger force may have more of the green oasis available to them, but the lone player has access to vast quantities of iron and stone, ideal for building a large mountain fortress.
West Coast
This six-player map is a lot of fun played in two teams of three with one team north of the river and another team to the south. The two players on the far left are likely to last the longest.
The Guardians
Many Herculean pillars watch over this map. But who exactly are they protecting?
The Last Stand
Are you brave enough to take on seven opponents alone? The only advantage you have is the enormous hill you are on... but then again seven against one are pretty hopeless odds regardless of your advantages.
The Forest Oasis
You opponents are closer than you think on this map where you will literally have to chop your way out of any situation.
Inches Apart
Don't expect much peace here. The only thing that separates you from your opponent is a small forest set on a field of grass. You will certainly want to get an upper hand early if you wish to be victorious.
Sleeping With The Enemy
A medium sized map set on a grassy plain. You must use the resources available to you wisely in order to be able to defeat your opponent before he destroys you!
Love Thy Neighbor
Anything could happen on this two-player map. Try to get an advantage early before your opponent does the same.
The Trench
This is a six-player map, with all the players on high ground. The best way to play this map would be to play three versus three. The trench in the middle contains plenty of oases but guard your farmers well, as any players choosing to build towers with archers will be able to kill off your farmers.
A Friend Indeed
Three teams battle it out for a large, resource filled oasis. Work well together with your neighbor and you will prosper; otherwise you may well find your opponent getting an easy double kill.
Empty Handed
This is a large eight-player map with plenty of oasis grassland around the edge. Expect a lot of fighting in the middle as players grapple to get hold of those precious resources.
Marshy Mayhem
These wetland marshes offer oil for everyone and offer a surprisingly good defense!
Riverside Rampage
This is a six-player map with a river running through the middle of the map blocking access to the other players. A few fords allow each player to get to the other side of the map. This map is suited to a three versus three style of game.
It's a Jungle Out There
Stranded on a small island in the middle of nowhere, your only choice is to defeat the other five inhabitants and become the one true lord. The only resources available are in the center of the map where a pack hungry lions await to feast... on you!
Hilltop Hideout
This is a five versus one player based map, with the player on the hill attempting to take on all the other players. Handily the player on the hill has a lot more resources available to them than the other players. The river around the bottom of the hill allows limited access to the player on the hill.
Hell on the Hill
This is a four versus four player-based map. The four players on the hill have a height advantage but have fewer resources available to them and the other four players are on flat land with plenty of resources available.
The Wet Lands
This is an eight-player map. Each player has a separate section of land with marsh around him or her, making any troop movement slow going. Each player has stone and oasis available to them but the iron is in the middle of the map, which they may need to fight over.
The Valley
A wide fertile valley runs through the sands and with resources for everyone. Maybe peace will break out... Some chance!
Border Patrol
This is a four-player map with a large âborderâ stopping each player moving troops over to the other. The access point is through the center of this border and if a player manages to patrol the center they will be able to control the game.
Small Barren Desert
You donât have much to work with in this barren wilderness so make the most of what youâve got.
Armenia
Do you take the high ground or the mineral rich desert floor?
Edessa
The western lands should be guarded well, for they hold great bounty.
Antioch
To the north you must go, if you wish to flourish; to the south, if you want to fight!.
Tripoli
A ridge divides this land. It is up to you to reunite it!
Tyre
Venture too far south on this map and you may get your finger's burnt.
A Mighty Oasis
Build alongside this sprawling stretch of oasis. There are more than enough trees and grassland to go around.
Cactus Valley
This fertile valley floor would be the ideal place to site a castle... if it werenât for all the darn lions.
Canyons
Build in the quiet seclusion of the surrounding cliffs.
Large Barren Desert
You donât have much to work with in this barren wilderness so make the most of what youâve got.
Large Island
Build to your hearts content on this lush green island out of harms way.
Rocky Oasis
This plush rocky oasis is teaming with wildlife. Happy hunting!
Small Island
Build the castle of your dreams on this tiny green paradise.
Oasis by the Sea
This area has everything a budding lord or lady could ask for... fertile land, plenty of resources and beautiful surroundings.
The Original Crusader Demo
Youâll find plenty of variety in this five-player map included with the demo of The Original Stronghold Crusader.
A New Land
Establish a beachhead in the desert, but choose your location carefully!
In the Shadow
Can you be king of the hill? Or will you sulk at the bottom whilst the tyrant on top sits there and laughs at you?
Watering Holes
He that controls the water shall come to rule the desert!!
The Dunes
Sand, sand and more sand.
Land of the Cactus
Its hot, its unpleasant and its very prickly!!
It's Just Not Fair
It really isn't!
Arnon River
This is a precious water supply to the east of the Dead Sea. No one player has easy access to all the resources.
Broken Dune
What force of nature could have created this feature? If you are caught in the middle you are likely to have a rough ride.
Caesarea Swampland
Fight waist deep in the swamps around Caesarea. Gaining control of the iron in the center will give you the edge.
Coconut Twist
There are no natural defenses here to aid your cause on this open and level playing field.
Craggy Cliffs
If you are on high ground you may find yourself short of stone. Don't let the players on low ground hog the lot!
Crete Peninsula
Eight players battle it out to control the eastern peninsula of Crete. The odds are by no means even.
Cyclades
These islands in the Principality of Achaea are held in contention. Will you be their ultimate ruler?
Drawn and Quartered
This battleground is split in four by high ridges. If you control these ridges you control the iron supply and will ultimately win the game.
Dunes of Nicaea
Nicaea's uncompromising terrain is the stage for this conflict. There is plenty of grassland to go around but you may need to do some weeding first.
Flood Plains of Jordan
This is one of the many areas where the river Jordan breaks away to flood the grassland. The fast flowing river has broken many of the fords.
Great Euphrates
This great river cuts the County of Edessa in two. The waterfall to the west will see a lot of bloodshed.
Halys River
This river snakes through the landscape splitting the players into three distinct groups, some with more space than others.
Hidden Crater
This crater is hidden deep inside the heart of Syria. There are plenty of resources to go around but who will make best use of the terrain?
Hills of Antioch
Fight for supremacy in the hills to the west of Antioch. If you are unlucky enough to be on low ground you will face a daunting uphill struggle.
Lacus Magnus
Lacus Magnus is a river that begins in the swamps of Caesarea and flows through the mountainous dunes into the Mediterranean Sea. Fight through the circular route using the rocky outcrop to your advantage.
Lakes of Konya
These lakes provide water for the surrounding area but who will win this thirst-quenching prize?
Lake Qaddas
This great lake lies to the east of Tripoli. The small islands create a sequence of choke points, which must be controlled to win the map.
Litani and Jordan
These rivers run parallel to the south of Tripoli. Use the ridges to launch assaults on the enemy.
Melos
This is an island in the unstable Principality of Achaea which was established during the forth crusade. The top left position is by far the toughest.
Pig in a Poke
Try a team of two on the hill in the middle against the rest. The sides might be more even than you think.
Province of Bodrum
This western peninsula is almost split in two. Being on high ground isn't necessarily an advantage here.
Reed Sea
Try making up three teams, one on each island. Use the long thin islands in the middle to launch your assaults from.
Region of Corinth
A hotly contested area in Latin Greece during the forth crusade but who will be the first to impose order?
Rock Face
A two against three face off. Leave no stone unturned when travelling to the other side.
Strati
Fight for this small island in the Aegean Sea. Whoever is placed in the top left will be at a slight disadvantage to the others.
Thasos
The food and resources are squarely distributed making for an evenly matched battle. Try placing four players on the left against three on the right.
Tilos
Everyone is on equal footing on this large island. Try playing four on the left verses four on the right.
Trapessac Island
Fight over this important water supply to the east of Antioch. Don't leave the player in the bottom left alone for too long of their castle will be virtually impenetrable.
Two in a Bed
Whoever is placed on the hill is likely to take a pummeling but at least they'll have company.
Wall of Iron
Most of the action takes place on the far left and right because of the impenetrable rock face running down the middle.
The Great River
This rocky land has pockets of resources dotted around the region with the river in the south providing the conditions for oasis to thrive.
The Spine
A bountiful central ridge separates two flowing rivers. The lucky lord that controls it will surely attract the attention of the lowlanders either side.
Two Rivers
Two groups of four lords sit either side of the parallel rivers in this huge straight valley. Unite and this encounter becomes very tactical; divide and its chaos!
The Great Provider
The lands between the channel of the Nile Delta are rich, with the center having both the most opportunities but also the most crossings to defend!
Starfish Bay
Up to five lords circle a large central bay. There are more resources in the center, but maybe you are better off in isolation at the ocean's edge?
The Spine
A bountiful central ridge separates two flowing rivers. The lucky lord that controls it will surely attract the attention of the lowlanders either side.
Archipelago
A huge maze of islands connected by strips of land. There is good protection here but the resources are all sited between the islands and will be fiercely contested.
Two Rivers
Two groups of four lords sit either side of the parallel rivers in this huge straight valley. Unite and this encounter becomes very tactical; divide and its chaos!
Isle of Tears
In theory the isle in the center of the rivers has plenty of advantages but the arrival of jealous neighbors has meant that perhaps it is a poisoned chalice after all?
Outcrop
One rocky outcrop rises above the river running through the sands, providing its owner with a strong natural defense against the jealous lords that squabble in the desert below.
A Layered Approach
It's time to find out if the high ground is really all it's cracked up to be.
Headland
A long series of plateaus lead down to the coast here. But is it better to be high or low?
Grain Basket
No one lord has natural control of the vast area of central grassland, but whoever gains dominion of the largest part of it, must surely triumph?
The Favorite
Of the three hills, locals called one of them 'the favorite'. Whether it was for the views or the strong iron deposits, no one was sure!
Hope Springs
Most lords are happy with their lot here and live convinced that they can prosper by seizing the vital springs in the center of the canyons.
Crater Lake
Rivers channel into a large lake that sits in the center of this crater. While oasis is plentiful around the water, lords may find opportunities for farms to be sparse elsewhere.
Rocky Falls
The idyllic waterfalls to the north will contrast the inevitable bloodshed by the river crossing to the south.
Convergence
Tight canyons funnel lords together and converge on the east. Defending from one opponent may not pose a problem...but defending from multiple maybe more challenging?
Crowded Island
Is this island really big enough for the four of us?!?
Worlds End
The long creeks dividing up this peninsula, provide a perfect defense for the lords that rule there. All must come together in the end, however, in the great central watering hole.
The Cratered Coast
Dotted with sinkholes and lakes, this pock marked headland could easily turn into a free for all.
Coastal Warfare
A lord forced to the edge may find themselves struggling for space. However, the seclusion may offer a solid defense.
Marshy Crossroads
A thick marsh divides the land with valuable resources scattered throughout. Is the fight for the resources worth the inevitable arrow barrage from the cliff edges?
Tipped Scales
A couple of brave players finding themselves on the western plains will soon find that they have drawn the short straw here.
Protected
The two players bottled up at the tip of a headland can hold out for some time. Of course one lord may be taking on more of the heavy lifting...
Crossed Streams
The two central rulers have excellent positions but little else. Surrounded by their foes they must fight back to back, before they can take the fight to the enemies across the water...
High Road
If the two lords on high here can clear the high road of its bandit camps, they may just have a chance. If not, wellâŚ
Serpent's Gorge
Although the two lords are seperated, the ridge has a few overlooks where troops can be placed to support your ally.
The Divide
To the south west a pair of friends are within touching distance of each other. Cruelly, however, an upland stream separates them, preventing them from offering any direct aid.
Cramped Crossing
A twisting river splits this tight arena in two. Tight river crossings and crocodile infested marsh are the least of a lord's problems when keeps are this close together
Snakehead
A long winding path leads to the center of this desert canyon. Canny locals have long used the canyon ridges to both hide themselves and ambush unwary invaders.
Shattered Peninsula
Friends separated by sea but that's not to say they can't help each other. Old ruins hint towards strategies used in past conflicts where perhaps ally troops can be sent to relieve some pressure.
Verdant Border
Only a pair of cooperative lords will find success on this map. Trading resources is almost essential in order to beat your opponents.
Rift Valley
This wide, arid valley has been ravaged by earthquakes in the ancient past. The heat and lack of watering holes ensure it remains a veritable hell on earth...
The Great Divide
An impenetrable ridge divides the desert. Whoever holds the central passage wins!
Encircled
Two lords sit atop an encircled plateau. You'll need to work together to fend off enemy troops before they reach your partner.
Splintered Cradle
A tough opponent sits in the center behind a highly defensible position. However, together two brave lords can brute force their way through the center or perhaps find weaknesses in the side.
Province of Bodrum
This western peninsula is almost split into two. Being on high ground isn't necessarily an advantage here.
This map is dominated by a huge area of oasis in the center giving players plenty of space for farmland. Proximity to other resources, however, is more restrictedâŚespecially for some geographically challenged players.
Named by locals due to its unique coastal outline, this map holds different challenges for the different players. While the player located on the bird's head has the advantage of access to their own oasis, they will soon need to join the battle for the center with the other players.
The rugged southern landscape offers the player by the coast a natural defense against the many enemies in the north. But with limited access to vital resources, how long can they hold out, let alone mount an attack?
A unique map where the player in the center starts with a ring of castle walls surrounded by moat. However, they will have to venture outside their fortress to gather resources which will bring them face to face with the other players.
The large mountainous areas create narrow corridors for each side to attack each other but it also offers defensive advantages for any player bold enough to try.
With all players located within the crater and surrounded by high ground it will take a skilled defender to keep sneak attacks at bay.
This picturesque but dangerous natural bay presents a number of challenges, especially for the exposed pair of players trapped in the middle.
With one player enjoying the defensive advantages of being positioned on high ground as well as access to nearby resources, it's hard for the other players not to be green with envy.
2 players, each with their own oasis and access to valuable resources. All that separates them is the no man's land full of lions!
The player on the ridge looks out over the large expanse enjoyed by their rival. But who truly has the advantage? Time will tellâŚ
The large mountainous area creates narrow corridors for each side to attack each other but it also offers defensive advantages for any player bold enough to try.
With all players starting on high ground above the large lush oasis sitting at the bottom of the hill, it will take a brave and skilled skirmisher to take advantage of all the resources available on this map.
Each player starts on their own lush oasis with easy access to wood and iron. All that separates them is a large flat wasteland. Pure and simple skirmishing.
One unfortunate player sits in the middle of the map with no natural defenses to help defend against all his encircling enemies. Good luck!
Players are separated on this map by a deep gorge offering only limited crossing points to maneuver troops and launch attacks.
Large areas of land, with access to lush oasis and natural resources, provide the space to build sizable castles. The only obstacle in the way is the long winding river with limited, easy to defend crossing points.
The player in the middle maybe surrounded by enemies but with plentiful oasis on all sides and accessible stone deposits, maybe the situation is not as bad as it first looks?
This balanced map provides players with plentiful oasis for farms and easy access to resources enabling them to establish a strong castle. The marshy area in the center of the map will likely be the main battleground.
One waterfall in a desert is unusual but two waterfalls is unheard of. Luckily these rich sources of water enable the fertile oasis to flourish which players will look to take advantage of, especially with their neighbors in such close proximity.
Up to 8 lords fighting in a large desert valley. Who can harness the natural landscape and claim victory?
Local legend says that this island rose from the seas when an injured phoenix plunged into the waters.
The natural way the river splits dictates where players are located and what resources are available to each player. With most of the resources located in the north, some players definitely have it easier than others.
Large areas of land, with access to lush oasis and natural resources, provide the space to build sizable castles. The only obstacle in the way is the long winding river with limited, easy to defend crossing points.
The unusual spider-like landscape creates a natural separation between players with the multiple waterways providing both defensive cover and offensive opportunities to the creative strategists.
Pitch lovers rejoice! There is more marsh in this map than all the other maps put together. Whichever player can master the marsh will surely master the map.
The player in the south east corner has the luxury of being the only player on their own island. The other players are not so lucky and will have to deal with their neighbors before tackling the enemies on the other lands.
The three little pigs in the south have a choiceâŚ.do they fight each other first or form a pact to take on the big bad wolf in the north?
The player in the middle maybe surrounded by enemies but with plentiful oasis on all sides and accessible stone deposits, maybe the situation is not as bad as it first looks?
The elevated lands in the north used to belong to the Wazir and have a natural defensive advantage. The flatter lands in the south maybe harder to defend but still provide a rich source of resources and abundant oasis.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each starting position. The players who adapt the quickest will have the best chance of survival.
A Mightier Oasis
A super-sized version of "A Mighty Oasis" with even more trees and grassland and a huge area to build in.
Back to Back
With four rivers dividing the map into equal quadrants, will you trust your neighbors and share the resources, or conquer all of the lands for yourself?
Central Defense
Defend an inland rocky island in this example custom scenario created by Firefly Studios.
Distant Encounters
Fight from the comfort of a more distant throne in this expanded version of the classic Crusader skirmish map.
Castaways
One side of this oddly shaped island controls all of the stone deposits; the other controls the iron. Will the Lords on each side work together to fend off the aggressors or will the castaways descend into chaos?
Temple Island
Each quadrant is given an equal amount of resources with limited castle building space. Fight to defend your castle and defeat your opponents to gain control of Temple Island!
The Thirsty Trail
A castle built close to such a busy trail could prove to be a wise decision. Especially with access to rich resources among the cliffs and vast fertile land along the lake.
Canal Network
Neatly dug canal routes run all throughout the area. Originally envisioned to transport goods on small boats - now it seems it is mostly blood that flows down these channels.

Islands in the Stream
Some lords aspire to be the center of everything...they should be careful what they wish for!
The Trident
Lords have no escape sitting between the prongs of the Trident. Establishing a strong early defense is a necessity.
Outreach
How ferocious does a lord need to be to survive being cornered into this coastal peninsula?
The Impasse
A narrow river divides the canyon with lords positioned on either side. Depending on how well an individual can control the central crossing, traversal may prove difficult.

(rat skirmish speech)
You impudent upstart. I shall take great delight in dispatching you myself.
Oh yes, I bet now you're worried. My imperial troops will soon be upon you.
Frightened? The glorious forces of De Puce will brush you aside... as I would brush a fly from my arm.
Ah hah, I the mighty De Puce, your nemesis... will soon triumph over your so-called army.
The world has gone crazy... I, I, I should have destroyed you.
My stupid troops can't... won't... didn't follow my... foolproof plan.
Please, please, please don't hurt me, please.
No need to panic Ratty, no need to panic, stay calm, stay calm.
Things are going well aren't they?? Yes, I think they must be?
Ratty wins again, Ratty wins again!
My plans worked perfectly, you are no match for me.
So my glorious army triumphs again. You are history.
I am victorious... and as for you!

Still alive? Well not for much longer.
Can you hear it? That's your death drawing near.
Ah, the little hero... well I may have a surprise for you.
You severely try my patience. I will remove you yet.
Who are you, to challenge me and my right to rule in these lands?
Oh spare me, I wanted only to be your ally, really I did.
Time to leave...
Oh I think I might just...
Am I victorious? Oh yes I am.
It's over my friend. Lets face it you've lost.
Lost again have we? Maybe you are not up to the job hmm!

Run away little chicken, I going to clip your wings.
Stamp, stamp, stamp... That's me on your head... I will CRUSH you.
I am mad, I will smash you to pieces, into little bitsy pieces.
I will kill you, I will kill you.
No pig not die.
Pig not like this, maybe pig in trouble.
What is wrong? What is happening to me?
I win, I win, I win... No one beats the pig.
This is too easy, fight harder.
Pig wins again, get ready to die... slowly!
No prisoners, everyone dies.

Your time on this earth is limited. Time to say your prayers.
I will kill you soon, you and all your vermin.
My men approach, you will trouble me no more.
Soon you will see what it means to wage real warfare.
Is there no one who will rid me of your irritating presence?
Damn you boy, I will have revenge.
Kill me now. I will not kneel before you.
Maybe I have underestimated you a little?
You fight better than your father. I will at least give you that.
You are weak and not fit to command an army.
I will tear down your castle, stone by stone if I have to, but I will have your head.
I win you lose.
My master has removed another pretender to his title.

(saladin)
The sands of time are running out for you my friend.
As the hawk would hunt the rabbit, so shall I hunt you.
Your barbaric ways... Your crude plans... You are too transparent my friend.
I am not a vindictive man. Once you are my prisoner, you shall live, maybe you will tend my camels!
By all thatâs holy, you fight well... Too well, I fear.
âCamel dung!â You are indeed a thorn in my side.
You are mighty in battle... But are you just as well? I put myself at your mercy.
As I look about, I take little comfort. I must not fail my people...
The situation looks grave indeed, maybe a change of plan is needed.
You are clearly no match for my forces. Give in now my friend.
My forces have struck another blow against you. This is but the beginning of the end for you my friend.
The desert is no place for you. Go home my friend, go home.
As it must be. Another has fallen before me.
I have need of your supplies. Is it possible for you to send the following goods to me?
I have received your goods. Many thanks my friend.
I am lost my friend. You must continue the struggle without me.
You fight well my friend. You have struck a mighty blow for our cause.
I have dispatched another of our enemies my friend. The struggle continues.
I am in grave danger my friend. I have great need your help.
We have a saying. When the camel sings, it is time to leave the oasis.
21
22
My forces are ready; our enemiesâ walls will fall to dust.
That would be most unwise.
The time to strike is not yet upon us, my young friend.
It would be a futile act, I'm sorry I cannot help.
I dearly wish I could help, but alas, I am unable.
Unfortunately I have need of such goods myself.
The goods will be sent my friend.
Our star is in the ascendant, my friend.
The skies darken over both our castles, we must take great care.
The men you need will be sent.
This is wise.
(caliph)
Let the siege begin. Take no prisoners. Kill them all.
The vultures are gathering. They circle over your pathetic castle.
My victory is at hand; the desert will run with blood, before this day is out.
Prepare to die infidel.
You test my patience. I will crush you yet.
What! You dare to invade my lands. You will pay dearly for this.
You have not seen the last of me, infidel.
Remove your army from sight of my castle walls, at once.
Stay away from my lands, infidel. Stay away.
You are weak infidel; my forces will ultimately bring you to your knees.
Watch your back, knight. Watch your back.
Death is too good for you. You deserve worse.
They all fall before me, as you will soon.
I need goods, send me the following.
Your goods arrived.
Death comes for me. I am not afraid... but maybe you should be.
So you can fight a little. Well fight a little harder.
Am I to dispose of all our foes? Well I expected nothing else.
The sons of pigs have me surrounded. Send me your fastest men.
You play like a lame camel. I am the skirmish master.
21
22
Watch and learn, infidel.
Do you take me for a fool, infidel?
NO, you will not command ME as your servant.
Get yourself out of trouble.
I will not waste my men on you.
You ask for the impossible.
I have sent your goods.
We do well... For all now fear the mighty Caliph.
Pathetic dog, you are losing us this war...
Yet again the caliph must show you how to fight?
Yes.
(sultan)
The desert wind blows hard towards your home.
Dove is resting, the falcon takes flight.
I watch the stars and they do not look kindly down on you.
The camels are restless. A bad omen for you I think.
The sky was not bright for the Sultan today.
The olive branches weep at the Sultanâs loss.
As all must sleep the sleep of the ancients, so must the poor Sultan.
The red sky approaches the Sultanâs fortress.
The pond is drying in the Sultanâs oasis.
The lion has roared, he will speak again.
The serpent bites those who wear no shoes.
A Swift passage to heaven for the Sultans enemies.
The Sultan sings and a Jackal falls in the forest.
We are in need of that which you most surely possess.
Oh bounteous joy, your ship has arrived.
The Sultan will rest tonight with the stars; I will watch kindly over you.
Your fire burns bright, ride on my trusted ally.
The lamb has fallen to the Sultanâs beak.
The vultures fly high over my fortress. Turn your gaze towards me.
When the sands run freely over the marble stair the hour is long in the day.
21
22
My loyal tigers are ready to pounce. Last night I dreamt of sweet victory.
Alas poor Sultan is afraid he cannot move.
Maybe tomorrow... Or another day... But not now my hero, not now.
I sleep the sleep of the ancient ones... And am too deep in slumber.
The omens are poor, yet... I cannot help. The Sultan weeps for you.
Sand is sand and bone is bone; my camels will stay tethered.
Yes, yes! I have what you need.
I see the moon is bright tonight... Oh long may we reign.
The moon grows dull... But who will save us now?
I am told my men are fierce... May they fight like tigers for you!
If you will it.
(richard)
My men are eager for battle and so am I! Prepare to fight!
My banner will fly atop your keep before this day is out.
The desert is a cruel place to fight, are you sure you have the heart for it?
Gird your loins, sharpen your steel, you will soon be tested.
Bravely done. Your fight like a man.
Fine you can bring down a few buildings. How about a fair fight?
So I am bested and my poor bones must rest in these wretched sands.
My walls are strong, my men are in good heart, bring on your slings and arrows.
Events have come to a pretty pass when a king must cower in his castle, but cower I must.
Victory! The lion roars once more.
War is a dangerous game, my lord. As you are finding out.
My royal banner rises over your domain. Rightful order is restored.
Sound the fanfare. The royal armies are victorious once more.
We are in short supply of the following provisions. Can you supply them?
Your supply caravan has arrived. Thank you, my lord.
I have fallen in battle. You must now lead the fight, my lord.
Good work, my lord. We are Royally impressed at your accomplishment.
Our cause has been furthered. Another false lord has fallen before me.
The royal standard is in grave peril. You must fly to my aid.
When the lion sleeps, so must you. It's time for bed.
21
22
Another siege draws close my friend; my men are in great heart.
You jest my lord. None but a fool would undertake such a venture.
I have more important plans my lord. I leave this honor to you.
These are lean times my lord. I cannot help you.
Courage my lord, courage. You must stand alone for now.
I find myself in short supply. I cannot send your goods.
Your goods have already been dispatched.
The smell of victory is in the air my friend.
These are desperate times my lord, you will need all your courage in the days that lie ahead.
I have sent some men to help you.
I march.
(frederick)
The time for action is upon us. My army marches.
Make ready your army, it is time for war.
Today we fight, today we will win.
History is in the air. Watch, as it unfolds before you.
The siege is lost, but the war is far from over.
My castle crumbles, but my will does not. You will not distract me so easily.
So this is day the empire loses its emperor.
We are prepared. Come at us, you will fail.
The imperial plans look tired. Time for a new stratagem.
You troops fall before the imperial army. Give it up; can't you see you are lost?
We move from strength to strength.
The emperor regrets your demise; you should never have entered the contest.
The empire claims another, so the story unfolds.
The empire has need of the following goods.
The empire is grateful for your dispatch.
The sun has set on my empire. You must carry the torch forward without me.
Your army does well; we have brought another enemy to their knees.
My army has today vanquished one of our enemies. We are winning my friend.
The enemy are at my gates. I need reinforcements badly.
The time is late my lord, surely you grow weary? Why donât we retire and fight another day.
21
22
My army is ready; soon another castle will fall to us.
This is madness... Do you really think this is a good idea?
No, this does not fit in with my plans.
I have no troops to send you.
My troops are needed, elsewhere.
At this time, I cannot send you any supplies.
Your supplies have been sent.
Our alliance grows stronger by the day, my friend.
We are in grave peril my friend, unless we act soon, we are lost.
My army marches to your aid.
Good plan.
(phillip)
My knights will ride you down. Charge!!!
Let battle commence, my noblemen are anxious for glory.
Unfurl the banners, put on your armor. Let the fighting commence.
This is a day for honor, for virtue long may it last.
We are defeated... how? I am surrounded by fools.
Mon dieu, the black-hearted enemy attack the very stone of our castle.
A darkness has descended on my castle. I am lost.
The enemy is upon us. We must be brave, we must not falter, hold steady, hold steady.
Our plans are in tatters. What is a king to do?
A glorious victory. The armies of France are triumphant.
What courage, what bravery, ride on my noble knights, ride on.
You are defeated. But do not trouble yourself my lord. You were bested by the best.
Prepare the feast. Our armies triumph again.
We are short of supplies; we request you send the following.
You are most generous; your supplies have arrived safely.
Oh wretched day... My glorious sun is put out. Fight on my noble ally. Fight on.
Our alliance bears fruit. Bravo brave ally, bravo.
We march tirelessly to victory my noble ally. This very day I have dispatched another of our enemies.
I am surrounded. Send your armies to my aid.
All of France salutes your courage.
21
22
My noblemen are adorning their armor. Soon they will be ready to SIEGE.
No, I'm afraid I couldn't possibly attack.
Too boring. Please donât bother me with your silly requests.
Help you? With what? Are you blind? My knights are all dead.
No... My knights donât want to and I think they are right.
No... I need these things myself.
Your petty request has been dealt with.
Glorious day... I shall rule over the whole of this fair land.
I lose interest in this silly conflict.
I will send my finest knights to your aid.
On my honor.
(wazir)
May the sun bake your blood, and the winds blind your eyes.
Hear the deserts call, it sings of your destruction.
I will strike you down.
Your destruction has long been foretold and its time has now come
My warriors have failed me.
Leave my castle alone, you wretched tin man.
This was not foretold. I should not die...
Disperse your troops; what are they doing here outside my castle?
We are weak we will be strong.
A mighty victory!! Your fate reveals itself.
Once more my men lay waste to your monuments.
None may stand in the shadow of the Wazir, certainly not you anyway!
They fall like flies in the face of my one true army.
Send me these goods.
Your goods arrived.
Slain! What hope for you now... None...
You have killed one of our enemies... Next time leave then to me.
Another falls before me, while you my ally look on as usual.
The forces of darkness are ranged before me. Ride swiftly to my rescue.
Red sky at night, Wazirâs delight.
21
22
Stone will crumble, the desert will run red. Our enemyâs stronghold will fall before nightfall.
Do not ask me to attack; it would be certain death, and you know it.
Not until I judge the time to be right will I attack.
I cannot help. Get yourself out of trouble.
So now you are begging me for help. Donât waste your breath.
I have no goods to spare for you.
Here are your goods, do not waste them.
Not long to wait, before we shall rule this desert.
You fight like a lame camel you are losing me this war.
My warriors rush to your aid, little boy.
You better be right.
(Emir)
Oh really? Better do something about your bothersome presence I suppose
This war is tiresome, you are tiresome, I will finish you for good.
My date farms wilt, my camels grow barren and you... Well I can at least do something about you!
I have put up with your irritating presence for too long, it is time to brush away the flies.
By thunder... What a disaster...
No. You attack my castle you attack me... I may be force to do something about it.
Oh blue thunder... Mother told me to be more careful, still a better life awaits.
Up to no good are we, lets see what you can do then.
Things arenât going so well are they... Still never mind
Hot rain! What a fight!
Oh this is easy...
I am sort of getting a taste for this war business, how about you?
Oh, I apologize most sincerely, I am winning too easily.
Our stores are most depleted, could you spare us some goods?
Many thanks to you my honorable ally.
I go to meet my maker I trust he is a generous host, so long my trusted partner.
Well done, well done... If only I had such skill as you.
I seem to have defeated someone, well how about that?
I am beset on all sides by the enemy. It would be best if you could come to my aid⌠if you get the chance.
Time flies when you are having fun. It has certainly flown well today!
21
22
I have sent the order to siege, will we gain another castle... Lets see.
Oh too risky I think, far too risky.
I thank you for the invitation, but I must decline.
My noble friend, it breaks my heart to see you like this, but I cannot come to your aid.
My troops are tied up at the moment, hold on my friend.
It is a little difficult to send the goods right now, maybe later.
You shall have your supplies.
Our careful strategy is paying off my friend.
We are in trouble are we not? We may have to rethink our strategy.
My men will take care of you.
You are right.
(Nizar)
When the sun is at its highest, you will feel the heat of my breath.
You have nowhere to hide, nowhere to run.
Slowly, invisibly, your death will come upon you.
My men are faster than the wind, quieter than the snake, you are right to fear them.
Stinking breath of the north, do not try and escape your fate.
You may chop off the hand, but we will grow another foot.
...
Watch your back⌠fool!
Like the tall river grasses I bend in the wind.
Your end is coming; it runs towards you, can you hear it?
Does it please you to watch your castle fall about you?
It is as I said, is it not? May you rot.
I have silenced another.
I need supplies.
I have them.
Our pact is at an end.
Thatâs one less, well done.
We have one less enemy to deal with
If you value my help, help me now.
The serpent sleeps. Is it... time for bed?
21
22
My black mist will soon engulf another devils fortress.
My warriors fear nothing, but I will not throw away their lives so cheaply.
I will attack, but not now... I will decide when the time is right.
You mock me.
No you must find your own path.
You would take the last crumbs from my plate... Be gone.
I will be generous this time.
The devils burn in the heat of our fire.
We wither like snakes under the dessert sun.
Black Death comes for your enemies.
Yes.
(Sherif)
Oh, well if it isn't the great warrior himself... En guard!
Are you man or mouse? I donât know why I ask the question... Prepare to squeak.
Your days of glory are at end. Prepare for a bit of humble pie!
Long live the future king, Oh thatâs me by the way.
Blast and thunder... You ask for a simple task to be done... And what do you get...
Thatâs my castle you're destroying. Go away.
Lost again.
Why donât you go and play with someone else?
Running out of cash again... Fetch me the tax collector.
Sweet victory... Want to give in now?
Another glorious triumph for my honorable lads... What do you think!
What a player... Try someone simpler next time.
Another annoying fool get his ascending orders...
Ally... Couldn't send me some goods could you?
Great, thanks for the goods.
Well I'm off... Watch yourself.
Super, youâve killed someone.
Thatâs how to do it, watch and learn.
Help, I'm surrounded, no really, help.
You are truly the cruelest lord in the land, now how many times have I heard that.
21
22
Another poor fool is about to lose his home.
What a great idea... I donât think so.
No, do your own dirty work.
Do I LOOK like I can help you?
Need rescuing do we? Sorry.
I'm the sheriff, not Father Christmas. Buzz off.
My generosity will be the death of me...
Looks like we are about to win ourselves some sand. Fantastic.
Play a little harder can't you dying is NOT one of my strong points.
I've sent some troops to rescue you... They're my best ones. Honest.
If I must.
(Marshal)
Soldiers... To arms... We ride to victory.
It won't be a pretty battle, so look lively boys.
We fight for the honor of those that have gone before.
I trust this will be a fair fight?
Bad tactics on my part what? Better hunting next time.
The castle seems to be under attack.
Fiddlesticks... Lost again damn it.
Itâs looking a bit dicey boys. Look lively.
Things are going a bit pear shaped, what?
We have carried the day. Good work lads.
Thatâs it, classic guerrilla tactics, thatâs what we like.
Oh dear! Well that wasn't very clever of you old man.
One more bites the dust, eh what.
Bit short on some of the basics old man, could see me right could you?
Spiffing, your goods arrived just in time.
Oh, looks like I'm a goner, its up to you now, old man.
Well done old bean, another blighter gets his comeuppance, well done.
Just chalked up another one.
In a bit of a sticky situation... Couldn't lend a hand could you?
Have you noticed how time seems to stand still in this damned desert? What!
21
22
Off we go, it's siege time.
Too dicey, far too dicey.
Request denied I'm afraid old man.
Bit of a pickle myself... Actually... Can't help.
Afraid I'm going to have to Kybosh your request this time old thing sorry.
Thing is need the goods here can't send... Sorry.
Be a pleasure, sending 'em now.
The wars going spiffingly eh what.
Too bad old man, too bad. Looks like we're goners in this one.
The cavalries coming old man, hang on in there.
Absolutely.
(Abbot)
My men come to cleanse your castle.
I will soon teach you a valuable lesson, boy.
The spirit is weak with you. Take great care.
You have little time left in this world. Prepare to meet your doom.
My troops fail me.
Leave these walls, boy, or you WILL pay for it.
I will remember this defeat and I will pay you back.
Take care. I am a vindictive man.
I must not falter. I must be strong.
A victory for me I think, it is only a matter of time now boy.
Another chink out of your armor?
You should never have crossed my path. Good riddance.
I am slowly but surely going to rule this land.
The abbey is short of materials, please deliver.
The goods have arrived.
How the mighty fall, what will you do without me?
Heavens above, so you can fight.
This is how to do it. Watch and learn boy.
The abbey is under siege. Send help.
Such stamina, my goodness! 24 hours and still going strong.
21
22
Begin the siege!! None shall stand in our path.
Away with you boy... I've never heard such a stupid idea.
The brothers are meditating they cannot be disturbed.
We will pray for you.
I don't think so. It's about time you learnt to fight for yourself.
Our humble church is not made of gold. You must use your own resources.
We have sent that which you require.
These lands will soon be reunited under our enlightened governance.
Our prize is slipping from our grasp. We must redouble our efforts.
These brothers are marching to your aid.
Agreed.
(Jewel)
A fine castle you have there... It will be mine soon.
Wagin' war runs in the family. Its just what we do.
You've had your turn with that castle long enough, donât you think?
Boys, to arms! This one is for uncle.
Well met my lord, you fight like a DEVIL!
Hands off my castle, I'm rather attached to it.
I die as a girl should, waging bloody warfare!!
You appear to have me at a disadvantage.
My troops are few, my economy is shot, what's a girl to do?
Sweet victory. Splendid.
Well fought boys. Are we not the finest regiment in the East?
Victory. Hand over your sword and then off you trot!
One less buffoon strutting around these sandsâŚ
Need a few goods. Do you have any to spare?
Your goods made it, thanks!
Over to you now I'm afraid; it's been fun!
Nicely done, but do leave a few for meâŚ
One more for my tally I think!
Golly, I am in a pickle. A little help?
I'd saddle a pig, if it'd carry me into battle!
OH?
Well met.
Signal the advance! ...and follow me boys!
Can't possibly attack right now, old thing.
Well you're as keen as mustard! But no, sorry!
Bit tight here at the moment. Can't help, sorry!
Another time, sorry.
Umm sorry, things are a bit tight here as well.
My pleasure! Goods on their way.
This land is ripe for the taking. We shall pluck it like a pheasant.
Take heart my friend. We still have our courage and honour.
Hold on old thing, the boys are on their way.
My pleasure!
(Sentinel)
Army advance.
Bring up the siege engines.
Sound the march.
To the enemies' walls
Failure... is⌠unacceptable
Protect the castle.
(exhales) I go
No retreat. Hold position.
Remember your oaths.
Objective, accomplished.
Continue to press the advantage.
You are defeated.
The fight continues.
Please supply goods.
Acknowledged
I have failed you.
A victory. Your battleplan should now change.
Another has been dispatched.
Send re-inforcements.
Only death can release me.
Stand aside.
Shields up.
Prepare for siege.
Impossible
An irrational order.
Help cannot be sent.
A unwise deployment.
Logistically unfeasable.
Dispatched
Your victory is in sight.
I will fight to the end.
Relief force dispatched
As you command.
(Nomad)
Love and betrayal flow in the blood, and yours will flow soon enough.
Ignorant Jackal. Your stone walls will not protect you!
These sands, these rocks, this sky, is ours. You do not belong here.
You will fall and then your broken bones will be fed to our dogs.
Arrgh! You cling to these rocks like a demented crab. We'll prise you off them yet!
Stinking Jackal!
No more will I ride the desert drifts.
You think to gaze upon our camp. Come then, lets see if you can take it.
A chill in the wind, it is time to move on.
Hah! You fight like a three legged dog!
Run home now, before you embarrass yourself further!
Your death gives me pleasure.
Another trespasser dead, they taint our sands with their smell no more.
Ally, can you send me goods?
We are grateful for the supplies.
I have fallen, fight on and rid the sands of these jackals.
You have my admiration. You can fight, that much is clear.
I have removed another thorn from our side.
It troubles me to ask, but we could use some help.
I was born in the sand and will die in the sand.
I depart.
Yaahh.
The earth will tremble beneath my camels hooves. We ride to victory.
My camp is hard pressed. I hear your call, but I cannot answer it.
Now is not the time; let us wait for a better opportunity.
I cannot help. I am sorry.
My camels cannot aid you.
We cannot supply you, we have not enough.
You will be supplied
We will clean the desert of these stinking Hyena's.
We are failing. We need a change of strategy.
Do not worry, I will help you.
My camels will ride.
(KÄhinah)
No longer will I guard dusty temples. I will RULE these lands.
Such little respect. Well soon you will kiss dust of my temple floor.
I have foreseen your downfall, now I will make it fact.
Heretic! You will befoul my sacred land no more.
[Hiisss] âŚpathetic! Men are weak and fail me ceaselessly.
You dare you lay hands on this sacred site? You will know torment.
Noo, this cannot beâŚ
Captains, protect me! What are the lives of men to that of the KÄhinah.
I have watched over the temple my entire life, I shall not fail nowâŚ
Give up now and I promise your death will be... exquisite.
You cannot protect against even the simplest attack, you have failed!
Dead? Shame! I wanted you as a slave.
Another doubter falls on their sword. Pathetic but predicable.
Send me some goods.
The goods are here. If I need more I will ask.
You should have protected me? You have failed me.
I hear you have removed another obstacle to my final victory. Well done.
Must I take on our enemies singlehandedly? What of your promises?
We are assailed. The temple is under attack. Fly to our aid.
I foresee a bloodbath.
What?
Hmmph
My captains advance. If the halfwits are correct, we will control another temple by the time the sun falls.
Do not ask me again.
Do your own dirty work.
What, are you blind as well as a fool?
Still your wagging tongue, you shall have no troops of mine.
No! Do not ask again.
You are pitiful, but I have sent the goods.
I WILL rule these lands. Fight for me.
You are no general, I should never have allied with you.
Pathetic. I have dispatched a company of troops. Do not waste them.
Yes, I will attack, it was already in my mind to do so.
(Canary)
Hand over your tiny castle. It's more pathetic than you are... if thatâs at all possible.
The impertinence?! Get out here and kneel before me, you flea ridden sack of a peasant.
Take the castle, kill the occupants⌠and disinfect it.
Excuse me?? What are you still doing here??
ooooh, I am so cross. Bring me the captain's head, or any head if you can't find that oneâŚ
aaahh WHAT are these turnip eaters doing? That's MY castle.
Noooo, I cannot, shouldn't, ermm (gulp), die? Rattykins, where are you?
What is that, err, army doing outside? Tell them, or maybe ask them, to ermm... go away?
What is going on? The servants are leaving? After I treated them so kindly and everythingâŚ
Such slaughter! How exciting.
Oh dear peasant, did we knock down one of your buildings? Well there's more where THAT came from.
Oh, dead are we? Now I bet you are wishing your were a bit nicer to me. Well too late.
Our forces are once again victorious...!
It is time to pay your dues peasant. Send us these goods... quickly.
oh well done, you can at least deliver goods.
Ah you failed me?! And you said you would help me? It's so not fair.
Oh, so the smelly peasant can fight? Sure you weren't just lucky?
Watch and admire, peasant, watch... and⌠admire.
Eeek... we are under attack! Defend me... your top priority right now is to defend ME...
Oh dear God, what a journey! The sand, the heat, the flies⌠Well dearest brother did warn me I suppose.
Ughh!
It's me.
My mighty army assembles. This is how you conduct a siege, turnip muncher!
Uggh? We may be 'allies' but I'm in charge here, ok?
Uh peasant? I give the orders here. DO... YOU... UNDERSTAND... ?
errm do I look like I can help? Or even care for that matter.
Go away stinky turnip breath⌠Not going to help you.
No No No, you're not having anything. I have plans for a new flower garden.
I am feeling⌠generous today. I will have Scribey arrange it.
Victory is in the air peasant. I will accept your praise and your thanks at the banquet you shall hold in my honour.
This is, errrm, not going to plan, is it? You're meant to be my ally, well, what are you going to do to protect me?
Oh dear, is the smelly peasant in trouble? It really doesn't surprise me. I will send a few troops.
Yes that was MY plan and I shall attack, as I certainly don't trust YOU to do it.
(Trader)
My expansion plans require your land... and your castle⌠oh and your gold!
There is so little profit in fighting, better for both of us if you left to trade elsewhere?
Oh dear, you have a face like a sour donkey my friend! It's just business!
I find the barbarous and bloody methods of my captains... distasteful. But sadly necessary.
Eeeshh, that was expensive. A lot easier if you just gave UP.
Hey, Stop destroying my property. You will find there is a high price to pay.
No, this cannot be? I am not ready to cease trading.
Oh, there is no need to be hasty here, surely we can reach an understanding.
My order book is empty, my camels lie idle. These are lean times...
Maybe sack your captain. They are clearly not up to the job.
Ah such a waste.
Such a waste, but still, a tidy profit for me nonetheless.
Ha hah ha! Another satisfied customer!!
I find myself short of certain goods. Could you perhaps... supply them?
Your generosity is wider than the great river.
Ah my friend, my trading days are over.
A bold move my friend. And a profitable one!
Ah, one of our competitors, is how shall it put it, "out of the market"!
The jackals are at my door, my ally. Can you help an honest merchant out?
As uncle was fond of saying. "There's more than one way to skin a camel."
Are you sure?
Fat and honey!
My war machine sits before another customer's walls!
OH no, most valued customer of mine. I cannot satisfy your order.
I agree with you in all things, but not this one!
It breaks my heart to say no, but that is indeed the answer.
I fear there is no profit in this for me.
Oh, so sorry It would be impossible to provide such an amount.
Your delivery has been dispatched, you can have this one on credit.
I am grinning like a camel. We are winning no?
Our camels backs are creaking my friend; I fear they may not reach the next Wadi.
I have engaged a company of mercenaries, hopefully they will reach you in time.
You make a most persuasive case, I shall partake of this new venture.

Time is not on your side little one. If I don't take you now, I will catch you eventually.
I'm going to eat you up and spit you out.
It is time little one. My men will swarm over your castle like a plague.
These lands are mine, and your castle is but a tasty morsel to be snapped up before I claim them.
Arghh, you got away this time, next time you will not be so lucky.
Get your stinking hands off my castle.
Arrgh, this cannot be, I am not readyâŚ
Leave me alone, you do not want me for an enemy.
It is getting dangerous here, maybe it's time to go?
You have suffered. It is but a taste of what's to come!
That's just a taste of whats to come!
And so you die. Oh how I relish this moment.
Another castle falls, more plunder for me!
I need goods, you will send them to me.
The goods arrived!
Arrgh! The river gods are angry with me, you are on your own nowâŚ
So you have some teeth!
Another intruder bites the dust.
I am attacked, send help quickly.
I can wait, but when I strike you will know it!
As you wish.
Nice
Soon my men will taste the blood of our enemy.
Not today, my men are busy.
Not a chance my noble ally!
I can't help you!
You must learn to fight your own battles little one.
You will get no goods from me.
I sent you what I could.
When we win, and it's looking ever more likely, how do I know you won't turn on me?
This alliance is looking more pointless by the day.
Some of my men are on the way, don't waste them.
Well yes, I was heading that way anyways!!

Sar! An ally in Edessa reports Duc Beauregard is sending Arab mercenaries to help Duc de Puce.
They're here, sar!
We are here to claim Chilvan Kale for Duc de Puce. Do not stand in our way or you will not live long enough to regret it.
The old Rat's made a run for it. We've done it, sar!
Our scouts in the field say an Arab mercenary party is already on its way. They could be here at any moment sar!
Here they come, sar. Men, to arms!
It's now or never men. Attack!
I think we've rattled the snake, sar!
The slimy blighters legged it, sar! He's left his general in charge of the castle.
Sar, the Truffe brothers are launching a joint attack! How are we supposed to hold out against both of them?
Fantastic news ,sar! Those bloated Truffe boys have started arguing over who gets our castle once we're dead. They've only gone and declared war on each other. Looks like the pigs have saved our bacon, eh sar.
That's evened things up a bit. One down one to go, sar.
Not so bad after all. Mission accomplished, sar!
The time for vengeance is upon us. No surrender!
Stone me! They're not wasting any time are they, sar.
Sar! I'm pleased to report that we've caught the slippery eel. He's taking the long hot walk to our dungeon.
Sar! The Wolf's retreated into the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Well have to track him down later, sar.
Now I'm in charge I can do what I want and take what I please. The first thing I want is your corpse on a stick.
Sar! These odds are impossible. Four against one, it's just not right!
Sar! The Stoat is officially out of commission. Looks like we're making progress sar.
Another bites the dust, sar! Only one rodent left and we can get started on the Wolf.
Sar! The Wolf is launching a charge. What are your orders?
Aftermath.

Sir Longarmâs niece, recently ârescuedâ from the clutches of the Wolf by some âpupâ, the Jewel maintains that she would have escaped all by herself. Most comfortable charging into battle on a warhorse, she is a veritable force of nature.
A ruthless templar of few words. Some question if he is even human as he has never been seen without his helmet. Long periods alone in the desert slowly robbed him of all compassion, leaving him the husk of a man, fit now only to guard his dusty outposts.
A confident Bedouin warrior, the Nomad is a prince of the sands. He has little tolerance of intruders and will quickly move to remove any that would rob his people of their desert birthright.
The cold and ruthless priestess of a desert sect. Her mission is to preserve the sanctity of the desert and to kill all those that violate it. She is single minded, cruel and, probably by now, quite mad.
Half-sister of the Rat. A spoiled and arrogant princess, she is also somewhat anxious and insecure. Of a similar age to the Rat, she bullied him constantly as a child. He is still terrified of her to this day.
Single minded in the pursuit of profit, the Trader likes a good deal and if he canât get it through charm, he will resort to force. He is one of the regionâs biggest operators and his camel trains are legendary in the desert.
.
.
The old lord of the marshes himself. Bitter and quite insane, he is nevertheless a dangerous foe. Quite content to bide his time before unleashing his river raiders when he senses you are at your most vulnerable!

Siege That is a special Siege mode that challenges players to capture a castle built with limited resources.
Siege That maps are created in the Map Editor. Map makers are given a maximum of 1000 stone and 1500 gold to build and defend a castle. Stone is used to build castle buildings; gold is used for castle defenses, defensive troops and siege equipment.
Before playing a Siege That map, attacking players are allocated 2000 points to spend on troops and siege equipment. Each troop type and siege equipment are allocated a value depending on their worth. Players need to recruit an army that they think is good enough to capture the castle. At the end of the game, the attacker receives a score that reflects how successful (or unsuccessful) the castle assault was.

Ahhhr...Life in the old castle.
âAppy times them were.
The people were oh so much friendlier...
Oh and how we feasted...
...and courted the fair maidens as well.
There was work, of course...
Sharpening our minds...
Making us strong...
But mainly, I remember it as...a happy time.
Oh yes...and then there were the neighbors...

eco campain mission brieifings
The scattered remnants of the Rat's troops are camped in these hills. You have limited time to deal with them and collect much needed supplies, before you must rendezvous with the rest of your force.
This village is prayed upon by sea wolves coming down from the hills. To get this village back on its feet we will need to hold off the vicious predators that wiped it out in the first place.
Bandits regularly rob this poor village, leaving the people with barely enough to survive on. Establish a strong presence here to hold off these thugs and stockpile stone and weapons to allow them to defend themselves in the years to come.
This village has got itself into a lot of trouble. They have let the land become overrun by bears and, rather than hunting them, have foolishly decided to pen them in. They also have a large armor contract to fulfill, along with gathering the harvest, and this hot, dry spell can mean only one thing...
We need to put down the roaming bands of enemies across the river before we can progress. But to do so we will need to rebuild this small marsh village and create a force able to take on theses outlaws.
Removing the stranded enemies from around the village's harbor will be a formidable task. It will be made all the harder by the village's trade in ale. The overseas merchant arrives soon to buy the shipment that is their economic lifeline and the ale will need to be ready and the harbor made safe before then.
The land was finally clear of our enemies, but we had one final task...the construction of a new castle to safeguard the North. There was no time to lose, we would put down our swords only to take up the felling axe!

Unit Commands
Units set to stand ground will not move from their posts unless ordered to do otherwise.
Units set to a defensive stance will move a short distance from their post to engage any enemy units that come close to their position.
Units set to an aggressive stance will look a long way to engage or chase down enemy units. They also target enemy walls and buildings.
Convert troops back to everyday peasants.
Cancel all the commands given to the selected troops and siege equipment.
Patrol between the current position and a patrol point. Hold SHIFT to place multiple patrol points (up to 9).
Command missile troops and siege equipment to attack a specific area of the map.
Command engineers to build a piece of siege equipment.
Replenish the rock ammo used by catapults and trebuchets.
Catapults and trebuchets can launch cows at the enemy to hopefully spread disease.
Command your engineers to pour oil on your enemies. Choose the direction you wish to aim in before releasing the hot, burning oil.
Command tunnelers to place a tunnel entrance. Once placed the tunneler will target the nearest wall, tower or gatehouse.

Favorite Saying
Pathetic.
Spearmen.
Best described as poorly designed warrens.
Impetuous and with a completely misplaced belief in his own abilities, the Rat usually only wins by accident.
âYou impudent upstart. I shall take great delight in dispatching you myself.â
Slippery but no real teeth.
Archers, Slingers & Slaves.
Simple curved affairs. His use of moats can cause problems, although sometimes he never gets round to digging them out!
No great general and his economy is a simple one, but the Snake can prove deadly if he senses weakness.
âStill alive?!? Well not for much longer!â
Tough, once he has fattened up.
Macemen & Crossbowmen.
Strong enough and well defended.
Likes to sit back and grow, protecting his cattle farms, but he also likes to fight! Watch out as his shock troops can quickly become a problem.
âYou are pig food; my men will crack your bones!â
A beast of an opponent.
Pikemen, Swordsmen & Trebuchets.
Large and hard to take strongholds.
A mixed economy and a good grasp of when to attack and when to hold back, mean the Wolf will always be a threat if you let him get established.
âSoon you will see what it means to wage real warfare.â
The wisest general in the desert.
Arabian swordsmen & Arabian Bows.
Well designed with thick walls and strong towers.
A clever ruler, Saladin gets the most from the desert, but donât let his friendly manner fool you, when he does siege, it's going to be painful!Â
âAs the hawk would hunt the rabbit, so shall I hunt you.â
Heâs not your friendâŚI think heâs made that clear!
Slaves & Fire Ballistae.
Tall archer filled towers and fire trapsâŚtricky.
The Caliph, whilst not the strongest sieger, will harass you constantly and taking him down is never an easy prospect, as you will soon discover.
âPrepare to die, infidel!â
Heâd prefer not to fight at all.
Slingers & a few Arabian Swordsmen.
Simple but elegant circles, with an occasional tower for the view.
With no interest in running an economy or building a great castle, the Sultan is no great threatâŚat all!
âAs all must sleep the sleep of the ancients, so must the poor sultan.â
A veritable lion.
Swordsmen.
Small and regular, they are the minimum he feels he needs to build.
Never happier than when he is attacking, Richardâs biggest weakness is that he is usually too impatient to launch into a fight, when he might have been better biding his time.
âGird your loins, sharpen your steel, you will soon be tested.â
He plays the long game.
Crossbowmen &, Trebuchets.
A broad front with many covering towers behind.
Uses every tool available to forge his desert dominion; a liking for beer, the church and lots of trebuchets!
âToday we fight, today we will win.â
Slightly dangerous.
Knights.
A simple facade of a castle front. Philip is more concerned about building enough stables than building the rear half of his castle.
Easy to defeat on his own, Philip becomes more of a problem when teamed up against you, where his famous knights can cause real damage.
âLet battle commence, my noblemen are anxious for glory.â
Aggressive is an understatement.
Horse Archers.
Cleverly designed. Hard to take with a frontal assault.
The master of wheat farming in the sands, the Wazir hates your presence here and will very quickly try to remedy that situation.
âHear the deserts call; it sings of your destruction.â
A gentle giant.
Arabic Swordsmen.
Large and overly grand, they look tougher than they actually are.
The Emir is a solid performer but in reality should provide you with little challengeâŚÂ
âBy thunder! What a disasterâŚâ
Tricky.
 Assassins.
More of a collection of towers in the sands. The Nizarâs 'castleâ looks invitingly easy to attack...
Doesnât play by the normal rules and given the right setting, his use of assassins can sometimes catch you unawares.
âWhen the sun is at its highest, you will feel the heat of my breath.â
Unlikely to do you a favor.
Crossbowmen.
More of an enclosed city than a castle, the Sheriff likes to keep everything locked up, including his own people!
The Sheriff uses fear to get every last drop of work out of his peasants, but his obsession with taxes often comes at the expense of thorough military planning.
âI'm the Sheriff, not Father ChristmasâŚbuzz off.â
Still life in the old war horse.
Knights.
Favoring a âdouble wingâ design, the Marshalâs use of a rear keep is unusual at the very least.
A slow starter, the Marshal is nevertheless not to be underestimated. He still knows which end of the sword is the sharp bit!Â
âThings are going a bit pear-shaped, what?.â
A religious zealot.
Monks unsurprisingly.
Thick stone walls and tower ballistae make the Abbotâs defenses look formidable, but does he have the archers to man them properly?
The Abbot is a real mixed bag. Too reliant on his favored monks for his own good, his frequent use of harassing catapults to knock down your walls, can often lead to unexpected problems.
âMy men come to cleanse your castle.â
One tough cookie.
Knights & Swordsmen.
Practical designs, with strong walls and towers.
A desire to 'get to it' quickly is perhaps the Jewel's only weakness. She builds just what is needed and then attacks in strength.
âI'd saddle a pig, if it'd carry me into battle!â
Iron man.
Macemen, Crossbowmen & Demolishers.
Solid, if a little large and always in the shape he knows, the Templar Cross.
A guardsman at heart, the Sentinel builds a strong castle and an efficient economy before attacking in numbers; best not to let him get too established.
âOnly death can release me.â
Easy to underestimate him.
Camel Lancers & Skirmishers.
Simple, lightweight bases. Quick to build and quick to attack.
Fast to get going and with a focus on skirmishing, the Nomad is often a thorn in his enemies' side.
âI was born in the sand, and I will die in the sand.â
Can prove tricky.
Eunuchs & Heavy Camel.
Likes to use traps for the unwary; attack with caution.
A balanced approach. Will set up a solid defence before attacking in any strength. Her economic skill is perhaps a little lacking.
âI foresee a blood bath...â
Not very.
Spearmen & Archers.
Chaotic and poorly thought through.
A total lack of any strategic focus, makes her at worst a nuisance and at best a tempting, easy first target.
âOh dear God, what a journey! The sand, the heat, the flies⌠Well, dearest brother did warn me I suppose.â
Heâs a trader by trade, but a warrior at heart.
Skirmishers, Arabian Bows & Heavy Camels.
Simple, with more of a focus on the economy.
A master at running an economy, the Trader tends to defend and protect what he has. However, any profits he makes are ploughed into his army.
âAs uncle was fond of saying: âThere's more than one way to skin a camel.â â

.
This old Croc has seen better days.
Slingers & Ambushers.
Maze like and riddled with traps.
A poor economy is only slightly redeemed by his harassing style; his âcastlesâ are full of surprises, however.
âI can wait, but when I strike you will know it!â

Mission 1
The Road to Ascalon
1239 A.D. and Theobald of Navarre sets forth from Acre with over 4000 of Europeâs finest nobles and knights heading for Ascalon where they plan to capture and rebuild the castle that Saladin had ordered to be torn down. Along the march, Peter of Brittany splits off with a sizable group to ambush a large Muslim caravan headed to Damascus. Following a skirmish the Arab force flee into a nearby Stronghold. Peter lays siege, looking to recover the supplies carried by the caravan.
>>272-----
(mission one brief)
The caravan has taken refuge in a nearby mountain fortress. Create a forward base and lay siege to the enemy from there. The camel train has a heavy force of guards, so expect them to harry your preparations.
>>273-----
(mission one objectives)
>>274-----
(mission one strategy/hints)
You donât always need a huge population to generate gold to build your army. Maybe the enemyâs defenses can be used for attacking opportunities?
Clear the oasis of trees to maximize farm space.
Keep your population small and sell wood and apples for extra gold.
Gain control of the enemy tower for a tactical advantage.
Start weapons production as soon as possible.
>>275-----
Mission 2
The Battle of Gaza
Shortly after the successful capture of the caravan a second splinter group of knights decide to conduct their own raid. Defying Theobald and the other leaders, the rogue knights soon find themselves battling and losing heavily to a larger Egyptian force at Gaza. Theobald and the main army move to rescue the knights.
>>276-----
(mission two brief)
Take charge of the small force retreating from the defeat. Create what fortifications you can at the edge of the battlefield and hold out until Theobald and the main force can reach you.
>>277-----
(mission two objectives)
>>278-----
(mission two hints)
Careful building placement will help you quickly establish a strong economy. This will serve you well later in the mission.
Clear oasis areas of trees to open extra farmland.
There are a lot of resources in the area. Sell goods to gain extra gold.
Get weapons production going early.
Towers full of archers and crossbowmen are a powerful defense.
>>279-----
Mission 3
The Siege of Beaufort
Victory at Gaza spurred on local Muslim lords, who moved swiftly to retake an underdefended Jerusalem. However, where force of arms failed, diplomacy triumphed and Theobald negotiated successfully with the leader of Damascus who was at war with the other great power, Egypt. Ismail, the Emir of Damascus, gave back Jerusalem as well as ceding several other reconquered areas. This treaty was, predictably, highly unpopular with many of his subjects. One such was the new ruler of Beaufort castle who refused to hand it over.
>>280-----
(mission three brief)
The Emir has provided a large force from Damascus to enforce his decision to hand over the castle. Take charge of the army and bring it back under crusader control.
>>281-----
(mission three objectives)
>>282-----
(mission three hints)
An unfocussed strategy will lead to unnecessary casualties. Probe the enemyâs defenses to look for possible weaknesses.
Uncover traps before sending in your main force.
Try to remove defenses from a small portion of the castle so you have room to siege without being under fire.
Save your heavily armed units for the final assault on the keep.
Hint 4
>>283-----
Mission 4
The Jordan Valley
The reconquering continued across the region, enforcing the theoretical rights that the Emir of Damascus had granted to Theobald and his barons. In reality though, most of the lands he was âgiving upâ were owned by subjects of his great rival Dawud of Egypt. The crusader lords, in general, cared little for the diplomacy and set about pursuing their claims.
>>284-----
(mission four brief)
Drive out the minor caliphs who rule here, to see all these lands divided between the barons.
>>285-----
(mission four objectives)
>>286-----
(mission four hints)
Setting up some simple early defenses might hold off the enemy long enough to allow you the time to build your siege army.
Sell excess resources to generate extra gold.
Wall off your keep and build a tower early to fend off skirmisher attacks.
Catapults and portable shields help immensely when dealing with the Caliphsâ towers.
Hint 4
>>287-----
Mission 5
Ascalon
Rebuilding the castle at Ascalon was still the main objective of the crusade. Doing so would force Dawud of Egypt to recognise the âtheoreticalâ claims made by his rival and make permanent the crusaders hold on the region. First, however, the castle must be rebuilt and Dawud made to see the reality of the situation.
>>288-----
(mission five brief)
Rebuild the castle at the vital port city of Ascalon and let the Egyptian Emir waste his troops on its walls
>>289-----
(mission five objectives)
>>290-----
(mission five hints)
Time is of the essence here. Use the large shipment of wood supplied to get a large economy up and running as soon as possible. Attacks will come quickly and then only grow in size, make sure your economy, defences and troops keep pace with the enemies increasingly desperate attacks.
Sell iron and stone to generate extra gold.
Bread production may be your best bet here.
Pitch ditches will be essential in defending.
Enemy Demolishers will quickly bring down your walls. Their shields will protect them from missile fire, but not if they can be brought into hand to hand combat.
>>291-----
Mission 1
Retreat to Cairo
The crusader army controls Damietta and has been reinforced by the army of the French king's brother, Alphonse de Poitiers. Together, they push south toward Cairo. To give Turanshah time to assemble an army fit to face them, he orders the use of guerilla tactics to slow their advance.
>>292-----
(mission one brief)
Use your Bedouin mercenaries and any means necessary to delay the enemy as they pass down the Nile Delta. Holding here will buy us valuable time to protect mighty Cairo.
>>293-----
(mission one objectives)
>>294-----
(mission one strategy/hints)
Effective use of your Bedouin specialists is the key to victory.
Clear trees on oasis to open up more farmland.
Sell stone for extra gold.
Use healers to heal troops between attacks.
Use camel lancers to attack the armyâs missile troops and siege equipment.
>>295-----
Mission 2
The Battle of Al Mansurah
The advancing crusaders are tricked into entering the supposedly undefended town of Mansurah, through a gate that had deliberately been left open. Once inside, however, they encountered stiff resistance from both troops hidden within and sieging forces outside the walls.
>>296-----
(mission two brief)
Lead our main force through the canal network to the south of Mansurah. They will not be expecting an attack from this direction, which will give you the advantage you need.
>>297-----
(mission two objectives)
>>298-----
(mission two hints)
Some troops are more expendable than others. Choosing the right troops for the right situation is key to taking down this castle.
Use slaves to remove pitch and clear a path to the castle.
Use sappers to take down towers.
Heavy camels are a formidable force for removing enemy missile units.
Hint 4
>>299-----
Mission 3
Supply Lines
After Mansurah, the crusaders retreat towards Damietta on the coast to regroup. They were bloodied but not yet beaten and hoped to inject fresh impetus into a stalled adventure. First, however, they must take control of their supply lines.
>>300-----
(mission three brief)
The invaders are pushed back but we must weaken their grip on the coast. Take control of the small fort to the west of Damietta. Fortify it and prevent it falling into the hands of our enemy.
>>301-----
(mission three objectives)
>>302-----
(mission three hints)
With your back against the wall itâs important to protect what limited resources you have and combine your defenses to maximize their effectiveness.
Sell stone to generate extra gold.
Keep your granary safe and buy food if needed.
Dig moat and position ambushers behind them to devastate attacking units.
Hint 4
>>303-----
Mission 4
The Battle of Fariskur
By spring 1250 Turanshah, the new Sultan, had travelled up the Nile in force and cut the supply lines of the main crusader's force. Harried and starving, the crusaders flee. Discipline has broken down, however, and they fail to burn key bridges behind them. Turanshah follows and forces them into a decisive battle at Fariskur.
>>304-----
(mission four brief)
A large part of the crusaders force, including the King, are encamped ahead of us at Fariskur. This is our opportunity to finally defeat our enemy. Strike quickly before other elements of their disorderly army regroup around their King.
>>305-----
(mission four objectives)
>>306-----
(mission four hints)
Swift, decisive decision making will give the enemy limited time to regroup and reinforce.
Demolishers are formidable at breaking through defenses.
Reunite all your forces to the same area for the final assault.
Clear the walls with heavy camel units.
Move with speed as enemy reinforcements will continue to arrive.
>>307-----
Mission 5
The Re Conquest
With the crusaders soundly beaten and King Louis captured at Fariskur, the Seventh Crusade was lost and the writing on the wall for the occupying powers. Sultan Turanshah did not live to see it and was assassinated at the hands of the Mamluks, who now took power and turned their gaze to the established lords and strongholds of the Levant.
>>308-----
(mission five brief)
Egypt is secure. Now we shall reclaim what the invaders have stolen from us. Go north up the coast and take the fight to the lords that have established themselves there.
>>309-----
(mission five objectives)
>>310-----
(mission five hints)
War can be expensive so this is not a time to be saving those pennies. Taking control of the region early on will keep your enemies at bay and allow you to finally rid them from your lands.
Donât be afraid to spend big early on. You will probably not survive unless you do.
Pitch can provide you with a small but very useful income, early in the mission.
Donât let the Pig bully you; make sure you win the battle across the river early on.
Gaining full control of the big mineral deposits nearby is crucial for final victory.
>>311-----
Mission 1
A Plague of Crocodiles
You are to travel by boat to within 10 leagues of the troubled region. You will then be ferried across to a small village which will allow you and your men to resupply and then head south along the river road.
>>312-----
(mission one brief)
Lord, this village is no good. We have been dropped off in a pit of reptiles. They have frightened away the villagers and roam the land freely. We cannot resupply here, but I have to say, the villagers could certainly use our help.
>>313-----
(mission one objectives)
>>314-----
(mission one strategy/hints)
Collecting pitch and food while knee deep in the marshes and sweltering in the desert heat is already difficult work. Never mind while surrounded by crocodiles!
A high population will require plenty of food. Focus early efforts on clearing trees to ensure there is space for your crops.
Don't forget to arm a few troops to give your villagers a fighting chance.
Fruit is crucial to your success here. Be wary of feeding too much of it to your workers.
Fires are not uncommon here. Be sure to have the well boys on standby with plenty of water.
>>315-----
Mission 2
The Staging Post
The village is back on its feet but you are still lack supplies, and so a new plan is needed. Deep water further up the river promises a good natural harbour. You are to build a small port there ready to receive the supply ship that has already been dispatched.
>>316-----
(mission two brief)
There is deep water here Lord, but so little else. My goodness we will need to work quickly if we are to accumulate all the materials needed for the new port.
>>317-----
(mission two objectives)
>>318-----
(mission two hints)
Hyena packs prowl this arid land. Protect your workers and collect the required materials quickly, so you can be gone from this place.
You can't buy wood here, make sure to have enough woodcutters so that production does not languish.
Although wheat farms are a priority, it can't hurt to grow some hops, brew some beer and bring in some additional funds.
Things may seem bleak here, but a little faith will go a long way in desperate times.
Hint 4
>>319-----
Mission 3
Bandit Canyon
With your small force resupplied you must now travel further south to your first target. A side valley leading up into the mountains is home to several of the Crocodile's bandit groups. They use this hidden valley as a base from which to strike out and attack along the river. You must remove them.
>>320-----
(mission three brief)
Oh dear, this valley is most inhospitable and the bandit camps numerous. Can I suggest we build a base in these rocks as I think the weapons and men we have brought with us will not be sufficient to eradicate these scoundrels.
>>321-----
(mission three objectives)
>>322-----
(mission three hints)
Suppress the bandits by destroying their recruitment camps. Then recruit as many men as you can to storm the enemy's base, and remove this threat for good.
There is plenty of farmable grassland here. Make use of this gift to make sure your men eat and drink well.
The nearby marsh infested with crocodiles may seem threatening, but it may also work well as a defence.
The nearby bandit camps will only get stronger as time goes on. Destroying these early will ensure a better chance of success.
Hint 4
>>323-----
Mission 4
River's Edge
Move yet further up river to the vital trading port of Asyut. This once thriving community is suffering thanks to the frequent raids and âtaxesâ imposed by the Crocodile. However, the Sultan himself is currently sailing up the river inspecting all the cities of the mighty Nile and by the time he arrives he will expect to see a thriving and prosperous town.
>>324-----
(mission four brief)
So many problems here for us to solve Lord and so little time to do it in? But with careful planning and your inspired leadership Iâm sure that we can turn this mess of a town into the splendid place it once was.
>>325-----
(mission four objectives)
>>326-----
(mission four hints)
Rebuilding this port to its former glory will be a challenge indeed. Everything we need is on hand but we are deep in the enemy's territory and the open nature of the surrounding desert is a big concern.
Keep alert! Post some scouts and be prepared from attacks in all directions.
Ambushers can hide and throw fire pots at unsuspecting enemy troops. Their skills could prove invaluable in this mission.
Enemy forces won't be your only problem. Fires break out easily here; be alert to the threat.
Take care how you expand your stockpile, it can have a big effect on material collection.
>>327-----
Mission 5
Hearts and Minds
The Sultan is pleased. But now he requires you to finish the job and remove the influence of the Crocodile once and for all. Travel up to the impoverished region that is his power base and from where he recruits his soldiers. If you can prove to the locals that there is an alternative to being ruled by brutality and fear, his power here will be broken.
>>328-----
(mission five brief)
I think this bandit lord will not take so kindly to our arrival Lord? He is likely to harass us every chance he gets. His stronghold, high on the plateau, will be very tricky to storm. Maybe instead we should focus our energy on winning over the locals and just build a fort to bottle up the old lizard.
>>329-----
(mission five objectives)
>>330-----
(mission five hints)
The Crocodileâs fortress is too strong to attack outright. Instead, establish a makeshift defence and fend off any attacks while you gather the required materials for the permanent base here.
As well as bandit forces, there is plenty of wildlife to contend with here. They will no doubt slow down production, so be sure to clear the land of their presence when you can.
The stone will be difficult to collect without a sizable economy. Focus on food and ale supplies and building up a defensive force before expanding stone production.
Predict where the Crocodileâs troops will attack from and build only the minimum defences needed, so as not to use too much stone.
