finding comfort in the wrong things.

He worked his way back from
an almost impossible position...

Tyson Fury
tonight was quite brilliant,

and he is heavyweight champion
of the world.

One of the greatest comebacks
in the history of sport.

There were other people involved,

but you can't deny
that Daniel Kinahan played

a huge part in it.

The Kinahan transnational
criminal organisation,

also known as the KTCO,

has been accused of
a wide range of heinous crimes

all around the world,
including murder...

..trafficking in firearms
and narcotics.

You're in the league of
Pablo Escobar,

Chapo Guzman.

He'd come a long way.

The United States will bring
their leaders to justice,

no matter where they are.

The wife's in church.

The kids are ruining the furniture.

The family next door
is hitting each other with hatchets.

Scouse, you know.
The Docklands area,

I think this is where it sort
of originated from, isn't it?

It's a hotpot, isn't it? Irish stew.

We're a hard community of like
Irish immigrants

from years ago, aren't we?

There's long historical connections
between Liverpool and Ireland,

strong underworld links
between criminal elements

in Liverpool and probably Dublin,
in particular.

Liverpool had a terrible problem
with heroin in the early '80s,

the worst in the UK,
and that was mirrored in Dublin,

probably a lot of the heroin
in Dublin

being supplied
by gangs in Liverpool.

And then came this wave of cocaine,

which brought with it
a new level of ruthlessness

and led to a lot of violence,
which we saw in both cities.

Christy Kinahan's
activities in the UK,

for a long time,
were a bit of a mystery, really.

Around about 2000, Kinahan was named
in police intelligence documents

in an investigation into
what was then

the biggest seizure of ecstasy
on British soil.

He was never charged,

but he was believed to have been
involved in the supply.

The destination for those pills

was ultimately believed
to be Liverpool,

almost certainly meant
for onward distribution

by Liverpool gangs,

probably around the whole country.

And that would have put him,
even then, in the Premier League

of drug traffickers.

So, he obviously saw
the UK as a substantial market

where he could make a fortune.

BEEPS COUNT DOWN TO THE HOUR

Good morning. This is BBC Radio 4.

It's 5:30 on Monday...

One, two, three, four, is it?
Around about now.

It's a big English
fucking roundabout.

We're on our way to Birmingham.

It's sometimes forgotten,

but this is a key part of
the Kinahan story

and their emergence
as a major mafia, really.

In the early 2000s, after
his release from jail in Ireland,

Christy Kinahan does live here

and there's strong connections
to Tamworth,

which is a suburb outside Birmingham

which becomes very significant
in this story.

If you want to understand
the story of the Kinahan cartel,

you have to come here,
of all places, to this sleepy...

..kind of posh little
middle English town...

..the last place that you'd expect.

Quiet little places
like Tamworth can sometimes

be hiding a huge amount
of organised crime activity.

Most people that live here
probably don't have a clue

that this is actually
the headquarters of the UK arm

of the Kinahan empire.

The head of the Kinahan organisation
in the UK

was Thomas "Bomber" Kavanagh.

Thomas "Bomber" Kavanagh
was an Irish drug dealer,

a very significant one
throughout the 1990s.

He was the first target
of the Criminal Assets Bureau

after it was set up following
the murder of Veronica Guerin.

And he came here, to Tamworth,
supposedly penniless,

to start again.

And he set himself up
as a car dealer,

but if that's what he was doing,
he had the Midas touch

because he very, very quickly
was showing money

that would have rated him as,
you know, a millionaire.

He was using the car business
as a front

to transport drugs and weapons.

I'm Ty Surgeon. I'm the regional
Head of Investigations

for the National Crime Agency.

For approximately the last 20 years,

the Kinahan crime group
has been on the radar

of the National Crime Agency.

They're drug smugglers,
they trade in firearms,

and there's no doubt in my mind
that they supply

many other crime groups
across the UK.

I'm a National Crime Agency manager
and remaining anonymous

because of my ongoing role within
the National Crime Agency.

I was a senior investigating officer
for an investigation

looking at Thomas "Bomber" Kavanagh.

If you were to look at
the Kinahan organised crime group

and the hierarchy within that,

Thomas Kavanagh, we assessed
as being very senior,

probably one below Daniel Kinahan,

and was effectively the European CEO
of that drug trafficking network.

There was a number of occasions
where we would

be conducting surveillance
as an agency,

and Thomas Kavanagh would meet

with senior figures within
the underworld,

such as James Mulvey.

He just waved over
and they're looking.

Someone else is going to join them.

And he's just lobbed
a plastic bottle in their direction.

And he's walking over now.

I'm Kay Miller, and I was one
of the senior investigating officers

on quite a complex investigation
concerning James Mulvey.

We were going out,
doing surveillance.

We want to understand -
what is he up to? Who's he meeting?

OK. I've got a group out ahead.

And generally walking back
towards the Tube.

I'll give descriptions
in due course.

People will meet in areas where
they think no-one else can see them.

They can be quite arrogant
and let their guard down

and they just forget themselves,
depending on who they're with.

And it's those sort of opportunities

that actually give us, sometimes,
some great evidence.

The size of James Mulvey,
like, he stands out, doesn't he?

I mean, if you wanted an A to Z
of how to look like a drug dealer,

this is it.

James Mulvey -

he was actually a cousin
of Thomas "Bomber" Kavanagh's,

so they had been in touch
throughout their lives.

Mulvey was Bomber's
first business partner

when he came here to Birmingham.

He was somebody that had the
contacts, had the connections,

was involved in the dealing here.

But around about 2014,

the National Crime Agency
started to track James Mulvey

and while they were doing that,

they were also bugging
his conversations.

Yeah? Yeah, yeah.

Yeah.

Do you know what I mean?

There's nothing more fascinating
than eavesdropping,

really, into what's happening

at a moment in time
which is very significant.

This was actually recorded
on the day that his cousin,

Gerard "Hatchet" Kavanagh,
was shot dead in Spain.

Another Irish gang-related murder
took place on the Costa del Sol.

Gerard Kavanagh died in a hail
of bullets outside an Irish bar.

Gerard "Hatchet" Kavanagh
was a cousin of James Mulvey

and of Thomas "Bomber" Kavanagh.

And Mulvey believes
that Bomber Kavanagh sanctioned

the murder of his cousin,
Hatchet Kavanagh.

Bomber Kavanagh is
the boss of bosses in the UK,

and he was the one willing to take
them all out when the time came.

He's scared of him,
and he looks pretty scary himself.

This evening, our thoughts are with
the Byrne and the Hutch families,

and indeed with the communities
where these people come from,

because these are very close-knit
communities,

and murders such as these
have a huge effect.

From Friday evening, you'll have
seen a number of dedicated patrols,

armed patrols,
right throughout the city.

They will continue into
the coming days

and they will be very
focused and intelligence-led.

I'm John O'Driscoll.

I held the appointment
of senior officer

in charge of tackling serious
and organised crime,

which included trying to deal with

the aftermath of
the Regency Hotel incident.

Once we realised that the target,
in fact, was Daniel Kinahan,

we knew that there could be
serious consequences.

These were juggernauts of
organised crime that were clashing.

Senior members of the Hutch faction
are in particular very nervous,

not just for themselves, but also
for family members and loved ones.

I'm Michael Doyle. I'm a reporter
with the Irish Sun newspaper.

I was tasked to go along
and cover Eddie Hutch's funeral.

Eddie Hutch Senior,
known locally as Neddy,

was a taxi driver
and a father of five.

Eddie Hutch was Gerry Hutch's
older brother.

Eddie Hutch was murdered
three days after David Byrne.

As he arrived back
at his home in his taxi,

a four-man hit team
shot him dead in cold blood.

And that was
the first kind of attack

that took place
after Byrne's murder.

Eddie Hutch would have been
regarded as quite a soft target.

He was never really involved
in crime.

He was targeted just
because of simply who he was.

People were kind of worried
who might be next

because if they could target
Eddie Hutch like this,

they could pretty much target
anybody they wanted.

At around ten o'clock this morning,

Gareth Hutch, a father in his 30s,

was shot a number of times
in the neck and head

just outside the flat complex
where he lived.

Sunday World leads with
the shooting in Dublin on Friday,

in which Gerry Hutch's brother,
John Hutch, was targeted by gunmen.

We're told that a passer-by
threw a brick at the masked gunman

as he prepared to open fire.

Johnny Hutch,
who has no involvement in crime,

had just collected
his profoundly disabled daughter

when he was set upon. Yeah. Yeah.

That's inhuman, what they tried.
I know, but...

But these people ARE inhuman.

Daniel Kinahan
was leaving no stone unturned

in his attempts
to get back at anybody

who he felt was involved
in the Regency Hotel,

or anybody he felt was
connected to people

who were involved
in the Regency Hotel.

It was literally
a full-scale annihilation.

There really is no sign
of this feud coming to an end

any time soon, is there?

No, there's no sign of it at all.

One of the problems is that much
of this activity is

being directed from abroad.

Dubai is a remarkable place.

It's risen from the desert.

It's glimmering towers,
it's celebrities,

it's cars that cost more than houses
in most other countries.

It is a magnet for
the world's most wanted criminals

because there is little danger,

very little danger
of you ever being extradited,

because Dubai
does not have extradition treaties

with many countries in the world.

We have tracked the offshore
holdings of presidents

and narco-traffickers.

ICIJ started to take
a look at the Kinahans

because I'm from Dublin, I'm from
the inner north side of Dublin,

so I had a personal interest
in the Kinahans.

2016 is an enormous year
for the Kinahans.

So, you have the Regency attack.
Daniel nearly loses his life.

They're in imminent peril,

and so what they do
is they flee to Dubai.

We were able to show

that the Kinahans set up companies
and rented properties.

We were able to do that
through our Dubai documents

that no-one else had.

Dubai Offshore Company say
that they vet their clients,

and they vet their clients
to weed out criminals.

How could you possibly, in 2016,

in the aftermath
of the Regency Hotel,

when Daniel Kinahan is on news
networks around the world,

being named not as
an alleged drug dealer,

but as a drug dealer,

which is remarkable in itself...

How could you possibly then OK him?

But that's what happens.

With ease, they rebuild
their lives in Dubai.

They can return
to business as usual.

Christy Kinahan Senior appears
to be out in Dubai from about 2015.

Daniel and Christopher Junior
move to Dubai

around the summer of 2016.

Interestingly,
they were not long gone

when the Spanish police
busted in the doors of that MGM gym.

They're investigating
the murder of Gary Hutch,

and they arrested a hit man.

It was James Quinn, an avid boxer
who Daniel had brought out to Spain

and who he employed basically
as his in-house hit man.

Daniel Kinahan
and himself were true friends.

When James Quinn was arrested,
actually, in Spain,

there was a dog-eared picture

of Daniel and Christopher Kinahan
Junior's mother in his wallet.

He has been with them
from the very beginning.

James Quinn was later convicted of
the murder of Gary Hutch.

This gym in Marbella was obviously

a home-from-home for the Irish mob.

But the gym just went on,
as if nothing had occurred.

I'm Tris Dixon, a boxing writer

Were you surprised that the sport
of boxing just continued on

as if nothing had happened?

I hate to say it, but, no.

But that's kind of what boxing does.

I mean, before all
the chaos was going on

in the UK and Ireland and Spain,

Daniel Kinahan was becoming
a major force in boxing.

Well, the face of Jamie Conlan shows
that he has had to go to war here.

He was in the ring after fights,
big fights, with big-name fighters.

I've joined up with, you know,
management team MGM.

Daniel, Matthew Macklin's gym.

You know, I couldn't do it
without them.

In 2017, MGM rebranded as MTK.

Tom Stalker, tell us where we are.

We're at the headquarters -
MTK Dubai.

OVERLAPPING SPEECH

There was the move out to Dubai,

and I'm not sure
that people in boxing

really knew why that had happened.

With regards to Daniel himself,

I think people realised that
maybe there was a...

There was an interesting past there.

But what was being written about
in the Irish newspapers,

it wasn't front and centre.

There has always been
a somewhat murky backdrop

associated with different eras
in boxing.

This was right at the top
of heavyweight boxing.

We saw Blinky Palermo
and Frankie Carbo

through the '50s and '60s.

In the '80s, John Gotti
and "Sammy the Bull" Gravano

were ringside at Mike Tyson fights.

This is boxing.

This is 100 years
of the backdrop that we've got.

It was easy to see
how big Daniel was in boxing,

because within
a very short space of time,

there was 200-plus fighters
on the books.

I don't think there'd been
anything like MGM/MTK

on that scale before.

People were going out
and having training camps,

nice facilities, all expenses paid,
loads of sparring.

He started to get some top fighters,
some guys with world honours

or who were knocking on the door
of world titles.

He's been like a friend,
an adviser to me.

He's someone I can have
that phone call with

and have that conversation with him.

Daniel's probably one of
the nicest men I've ever met.

And for what he's done in my career
and what he's doing,

regarding, like, advising me,
he's phenomenal.

But the king of sport
has always been seen to be

the world heavyweight champion,
right?

So that's why I've linked up
with MTK Global.

This is just going
to be everywhere now,

because people don't realise
how big this really is.

I'm the biggest star
in world boxing.

They needed a high, high-profile
name in world boxing

to take it to another level...

..and now they've got the big dog.

We must be coming up
towards the house,

because all of a sudden,
things are looking familiar.

This is the road
that Bomber Kavanagh was living on.

I came here first in 2015 to try
and do a surveillance operation,

well before the Regency occurred.

Bomber Kavanagh was very much
on my radar at the time,

but there was no photograph
of Bomber Kavanagh.

That's how unknown he was then.

There... Literally, a photograph
didn't exist of him.

Is that it? That's it there.

It's a gated, detached property
with a large back garden,

large front garden,
electric gates, cameras,

bulletproof windows
and a long driveway up to it,

which, at the time
when I was here,

there was matching Range Rover cars,
his and hers, in that driveway.

I noticed that
there was obviously somebody

who was a member of staff
in the household

had come out onto the driveway and
had turned one of those Range Rovers

facing forward, as if somebody
was ready to come out.

Sure enough, we see the gates
beginning to open.

Bomber Kavanagh
and his wife came out the drive.

But that was Thomas "Bomber"
Kavanagh's first outing

in the Irish media in decades.

And, of course,
all the long days of work paid off

because he becomes THE central
figure in the whole story

in a very short space of time.

This was before the Regency Hotel
and before his brother-in-law,

David Byrne, was murdered.

a 33-year-old partner,

father, brother and son.

No justice in Ireland!
No justice for my brother!

Where's the justice?

Where is it?!

Joanne Byrne,
the wife of Bomber Kavanagh,

is the sister of
David and Liam Byrne...

..who headed up the Dublin faction
of the Kinahan organisation.

And in the aftermath of
the Regency Hotel,

Liam Byrne comes here to Tamworth.

And Liam Byrne is living in a house
not far from Bomber Kavanagh's.

And after his brother-in-law
was killed, Kavanagh,

he reaped a revenge
along with Daniel Kinahan.

It was narco-style, the revenge
that they rained down on the city.

He uses here as a base, you know,

to make the money
to fund that murderous campaign

and to direct exactly
what's going on at home.

It was just one murder after
another, clocking up bodies.

Whether they would live or die
was decided here in the Midlands.

People don't even like coming out
at the moment to the shops,

now we have bullets flying.

We're not part of the feud,
but we're actually living the feud.

It could be you or I,
any one of us,

if we're in the wrong place
at the wrong time.

and I'm the co-author of
Kinahan Assassins.

Following the incident
at the Regency Hotel,

Dublin was like a war zone.

When you have two criminal gangs
intent on wiping each other out

and bringing guns onto busy,
close-knit residential streets,

it's inevitable that innocent people
will be caught up in this.

We're in Sheriff Street.

This is in the north
inner city area of Dublin.

And this is where Martin O'Rourke
was shot dead in April 2016.

The man who died was aged 24.

And it's thought he was shot
because he was wearing

the same sort of jacket
as that worn by the intended target.

It's known that
a member of the Hutch Gang

was regularly seen in the area of
today's shooting.

Martin O'Rourke,
he was just walking by

when a guy came along targeting
a member of the Hutch Gang.

And the gunman fired 13 shots,

and one of those shots
hit Martin O'Rourke in the head

and he was killed instantly.

Larry, you're the grandfather of
the three young children

who have been left without

their father when Martin...
I am, Joe, Yes.

The Taoiseach, the Prime Minister
of the country,

attended that man's funeral,

and that reflected the fact
that the country was concerned

that nobody, including the state,
would have the capacity

to deal with
the Kinahan organisation.

Martin O'Rourke wasn't
the last innocent person

who would lose his life
in this feud.

Not all of the killings connected
to this feud happened in Dublin.

There was one in Majorca

in which another innocent person
lost their life.

40-year-old Trevor O'Neill
was on holiday in Majorca

with his partner
and their three young children

when he was shot
in the back by gunmen

who believed he was someone else.

At the time he was shot, he was
speaking to one of the Hutch family

who has no criminal connections.

Mr O'Neill was in Spain
celebrating his birthday.

Bomber Kavanagh was the one
who was recruiting the hit men,

including Glen Clarke,

who murdered Martin O'Rourke
and Trevor O'Neill -

two innocent people caught up
in this mayhem.

My name is Seamus Boland,
and I'm currently the head

of the Garda National Drugs
and Organised Crime Bureau.

This feud was still very active.

By the end of 2016, we saw within
the region of ten murders

and many other attempted murders.

Intelligence was telling us

that there was further
imminent attacks being planned.

Our capabilities had to step up.

The scene of
the latest blow in the fight

against organised crime
in the capital.

Events began here at
the Greenogue Business Park,

in the southwest of
the city this morning.

Officers from the Garda Drugs
and Organised Crime Bureau

swooped in on this unit.

It was an intelligence-led
operation.

This was a hugely
significant moment.

Intelligence has led
Gardai in Ireland in January 2017

to Bomber Kavanagh's
weapons factory.

He has just delivered a load of
weapons from the UK,

primed and ready for murder,
and thankfully, they are seized.

A total of 15
military-grade firearms

were located on that premises.

13 of them were revolvers
and pistols,

and two of them were submachine guns

with thousands of rounds
of ammunition.

Four of the handguns were loaded
and ready for collection.

Today's operation disrupted
an imminent attack,

and I've no doubt we have saved
lives as a result of this operation.

The Greenogue operation
was very significant

for us, because the firearms
were directly linked back

to Thomas Kavanagh
and his criminal organisation.

Also seized during that Garda raid
is a small little bit of paper,

which is going to lead to
the downfall of Bomber in the UK.

The backdrop to us taking this on
was what was going on in Ireland.

That's what's in our heads. At the
point that we pick this up,

we know that we're taking on
a significant individual

who has links to a set
of circumstances which

were unprecedented in Ireland,
and the stakes were high.

For the NCA,
investigators like myself,

these are the sort of
cases we got into this world for.

I was assigned

the role of lead case officer
on that operation.

They were using the legitimate
transport companies to bring

the drugs and guns into
the UK.

During the Greenogue seizure,

an invoice was found that was from
a transport company in the Midlands.

A completely legitimate company.

So we put in place with
the legitimate transport company

that we needed notification

the next time they were bringing
a load in.

In the summer of 2017,

Daniel Kinahan was marrying
Caoimhe Robinson,

already a gangland widow,
whose previous partner,

an associate of Daniel Kinahan,

had been shot dead in front of her
in Dublin.

She had travelled out from Dublin
to join Kinahan in Dubai,

agreed to marry. The wedding
in the Burj Al Arab is probably

one of the most famous weddings
on the planet.

Seven-star hotel,

the most exclusive hotel
in the world.

Where else would you have

your wedding
if you were Daniel Kinahan?

The whole ballroom was glittering
in Swarovski crystals.

There was a nine-tier wedding cake
and thrones for the newlyweds.

At that wedding was
guests from home,

family and friends

with absolutely nothing to do
with organised crime.

There was people from
the sporting world,

including Tyson Fury, members
of Britain's Olympic boxing team.

It's quite extraordinary.

But despite all this
that is going on in his life,

and all that's going right

in his life, and this new life he
has in the lap of luxury in Dubai,

Daniel Kinahan

still can't get his head out of home
and his enemies.

The key figures from the Hutch
organisation are still

keeping him awake at night.

He's flying an international

hit man into Ireland
to take out his enemies.

Hi, my name is Imre Arakas.

I am, like, Estonian national,

but I live in Spain for 20 years.

How did you get to know
the Kinahans?

My name is Dave Gallagher.

I'm a detective superintendent

with the Garda National Drugs
and Organised Crime Bureau.

I was on duty in Dublin Castle
when a call came in indicating

that Imre Arakas was on
an aeroplane flying into Ireland

and due to arrive
in Dublin Airport very shortly.

TRANSLATION:

His name would have been known

as a potential hit man
for hire across Europe,

and definitely we considered it

a significant risk
that we had to address.

I'm a retired detective sergeant

and because of the nature of
that work,

I'm reluctant to reveal my identity
at this point in time.

I started work
that day at about four o' clock

and Dave Gallagher came to me
and said,

"Get the team out to
Dublin Airport."

I would be monitoring
the radio channel and receiving

the information in real time as to
what they're seeing,

what's occurring.

We monitored the passengers
coming off and it was

very easy to pick him out
from the group,

given that he was 6'6" tall.

His haversack had

a large groundsheet type of thing
on the top of it,

that then,
when he put it on his back,

made him about seven-foot tall,

so he was easy to follow out
in a crowd, as it were.

Our team observed

Imre Arakas walking around
the north inner city,

in proximity to home addresses
of members of the Hutch family.

He also appeared
to take particular interest

in some locations

where previous murders
had taken place.

There was only one reason he was
in Ireland at that time,

and that was to kill James Gately.

James "Mago" Gately was
a childhood friend of Gary Hutch.

Gary Hutch actually introduced him
to Daniel Kinahan.

Gately was heavily interested
in boxing

and Kinahan actually trained him
at one point.

Now, after Gary Hutch was murdered,
Gately was forced to pick a side

and he certainly aligned
himself with the Hutches

because of his loyalty to Gary.

James Gately was suspected by
the Kinahan cartel of playing

a crucial role in what happened at
the Regency.

He's never been prosecuted

or anything like
that in relation to it,

but he was a person of interest

as far as the Kinahans
were concerned.

In the months and year or so
after the Regency,

Gately went into hiding,

but he remained the number one
target almost,

in terms of the cartel.

We followed
the van out this direction here,

and there's a house up here on
the right-hand side

that he got dropped off at
and stayed there overnight.

It was deemed that the best
decision to do

was to, let's conduct a search of
that premises

and an intervention at that point.

The emergency response unit went
in for a hard entry.

There was an encrypted
BlackBerry mobile device, which

was still turned on and open.

Encrypted BlackBerry
devices can be deleted remotely.

One of the detectives, very,

very quick thinking, photographed
the messages on that phone.

There was reference
to locations, which subsequently

transpired from our investigations
to be the address

and locations around
the address of James Gately.

And there was reference to shooting
James Gately in the head.

We are satisfied that we prevented
the murder of James Gately

because of his arrest
and because of his conviction

and incarceration here in Ireland.

Imre Arakas is now currently
in custody,

having also pleaded guilty to
a number of murders in Lithuania.

The arrest of Imre Arakas by

the Gardai was a huge success
for them,

but the Kinahan cartel still had

a long list of people they wanted
to execute.

And one of those individuals

was Gerry Hutch and also Gerry
Hutch's brother, Patsy.

This is Champions Avenue,
and this is where Gerry "The Monk"

Hutch's brother Patsy lives.

At this point, Gerry Hutch had kind
of disappeared from the scene.

He had gone into hiding,
but his brother, Patsy Hutch,

who was Gary Hutch's father,

was a person of interest
with regards to what took place at

the Regency, by the Gardai and by
the cartel.

He basically remained firm

and stayed in his home
in the north inner city.

He was pictured

a number of times wearing
a bulletproof vest,

but he literally dug his heels in
and said, "I'm not going anywhere."

The Kinahan

organisation had a vast amount
of financial resources.

They were throwing money
at everyone.

So the Guards
actively identified those

in different parts of the city
who they believed were willing

to take up the gun
for Daniel Kinahan.

We decided that we needed
to apprehend these people

in circumstances
where we could provide evidence to

a court that they had
a plan to murder,

and that they fully intended
to implement that plan.

Decisions were made
to deploy audio listening devices

in the vehicles associated with
the Kinahan criminal organisation.

Just yards from Patsy Hutch's home,

you had a Kinahan cartel
hit team based

for the sole purpose of killing
Patsy Hutch.

You're watching and listening

to what's going on within
the murder team,

ready to do
an immediate intervention.

You're walking that tightrope
between intervening too soon

and not having sufficient evidence,
or intervening too late

and life is lost.

The murder team involved

multiple people who were employed
to carry out this murder.

One of the murder team served

in the British military
for a number of years,

so the interception of a team
with those capabilities

was very important to us.

Their plan that day was to lure

Patsy Hutch from his home
by attacking his daughter's car.

A hit team would be lying in wait
and would then kill him.

The murder team had driven

their getaway car into
an underground car park.

They had a secondary vehicle also
parked in the underground car park,

where the murder team were lying in

wait until they got word
from another person

who was observing the activity
at Patrick Hutch's house.

The last minute, they were
going to get out of the back of

a van and carry out the shooting.

Hearing these conversations
in real time

and getting feedback from
the surveillance officers on

the ground who are observing
what's going on,

the decision was made at that point

for an intervention to be conducted
and the targets arrested.

ARCHIVE: This was a three-man
hit-for-hire team.

They were recorded discussing
the murder of Patrick Hutch,

and they were just 250 metres
from his home when they were caught.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said

that they were caught red-handed
by excellent police work.

Today's conviction is part of An
Garda Siochana's relentless focus

on individuals who are willing

to target other people
for assassination.

Thankfully, we had a number of
interventions of teams,

or people, who were en route to
commit murder.

The number of murders

that were prevented at this time
is about 80,

with a significant
number of gunmen currently

serving lengthy sentences
in our prisons here in Ireland.

They were losing hit men.
They were losing organisers.

This cartel was appearing weak
at this particular juncture.

By 2017, 2018, there's an enormous

amount of pressure coming on
the Kinahan cartel.

I think we were looking at 70

or 80 members of
the Kinahan cartel behind bars.

They'd taken over Mountjoy jail.
Associates of the Hutch gang,

who had traditionally sort of
held sway over Mountjoy,

could no longer be held
in the prison

because so many cartel members
were in there.

Same in the UK - Bomber Kavanagh is
coming under major pressure.

The beginning of October, we had
notification that Thomas Kavanagh

was bringing in a load,
landing in Dover.

At Dover, we stopped the load
and examined what turned out

to be two massive
tarmac rolling machines.

Big pieces of equipment
with spikes on the outside.

Within the centre of
the cylinder of this,

this was all packaged cannabis.

That's a pretty clear depiction

of exactly what was recovered out

of those two tarmac
rolling machines.

So there's, I think,

200 kilos of cannabis there
and 15 kilos of cocaine.

And that's just one load. In excess
of 20 loads would have come into

the UK over the period of time of
the investigation.

The retail value is tens of millions

of pounds of drugs coming into
the UK.

Our challenge was demonstrating
Thomas Kavanagh was top of the tree,

he was the person controlling
all this activity.

Part of the challenge
in obtaining evidence against

the heads
of these organised crime groups is

that you very rarely
see them going hands-on.

These are the masterminds.
These are the people that control

the method and employ people
to do that work on their behalf.

James Mulvey was continually on
the move,

flying to different parts of
the world regularly.

He lived a lavish lifestyle
in five-star hotels,

often paying for those hotels
in cash.

Mulvey was spending £10,000 a week,

had multiple different
girlfriends.

In 2017, Mulvey
was eventually caught in Lithuania.

A Solihull man who
masterminded an international

drug smuggling operation

has been sentenced to 32 years
in jail.

42-year-old James Mulvey
was described as the linchpin of

a ring that smuggled cocaine
and cannabis

worth over £100 million.

ARCHIVE: He was arrested by special
forces in Lithuania.

That was the culmination of

a two-year investigation by
the National Crime Agency,

spanning nine countries.

And he was living the high life
for many years.

He had a penchant for Rolexes,

fast cars and a personal
£1,000-a-week cocaine habit.

When he came back off the plane,
when he'd been extradited,

I had to meet him.
And one of the things I do remember,

he'd actually brought
his own silk sheets from Lithuania,

hoping to use them in a UK prison.

But unfortunately,
that wasn't possible.

It's the day after Mulvey's arrest,

and Mulvey's father
was observed meeting with

an individual in a crematorium.

The individual met
was Thomas Kavanagh.

You have to realise

that Thomas Kavanagh
is surveillance savvy.

He's very disciplined
in his communications.

So we continued to build
a case against Thomas.

Around the time
all this was happening,

Daniel Kinahan
was carrying on regardless.

He is fixing his sights
on Tyson Fury for a comeback.

Howdy hell.

Yeah. Come on, then!

Trained over here with Billy Joe
a few years ago,

and I've never stopped
coming back since.

Not only was Tyson Fury training
for his comeback in what was now

the MTK gym in Marbella, that only
two years earlier, remember,

had been raided by Spanish police,

but cameras
from major sports broadcasters

like BT Sport
were now filming inside the gym,

with no mention of Daniel Kinahan
or the blood

that was being shed back in Ireland.

in at that stage was the

feel-good story
of Fury overcoming his demons.

His stock was at an all-time high,

but the comeback had to wait
for the rematch.

In January 2019,

I felt that we had the evidence

to justify arresting Thomas Kavanagh
for his role and

being head of this
organised crime group.

We're both from the NCA. Right,

I'm arresting you on suspicion

of conspiring to import and supply
class A and B controlled drugs,

conspiring to import and supply
firearms and ammunition,

money laundering...

At the time of his arrest,

he was returning from
a family holiday

where he'd been spending Christmas
in Mexico.

So a team arrested him coming off
the aeroplane.

On this one. Sit on that one.

And what followed then was
a search at his home address.

He lived in a very large,

gated mansion that had
reinforced door frames,

reinforced windows,

and you can only surmise that
that's a mixture of trying

to stop us getting in
as law enforcement

and maybe stop his competitors
getting at him or his family,

given the backdrop of
all the violence

that was taking place

in and around this crime group
at that time.

So, having got access to
the property,

you could see that they were living
an expensive lifestyle.

Gucci handbags, Chanel handbags,

cash casually found stuffed
down the back of chairs.

You know, if you went
down the back of my sofa,

you might find a pound coin,

but you certainly wouldn't
be finding £20,000.

There were also recovered
an array of weaponry, really.

Swords, large machetes,
clubs, coshes

casually stuffed under the bed

in the master bedroom

where Thomas Kavanagh
and his wife would sleep.

We seized a number of mobile phones
in a range of different addresses,

and what turned out to be
a really crucial

PGP-encrypted
BlackBerry was recovered.

I mean, it's so significant
that I can remember

the exhibit number for it.

Our specialist digital
forensic examiners were able

to break through some of

that encryption and do a download on
the device.

One of the names on one of
the devices was "The Gaffer".

One of our jobs was to show

that when they were referring to
The Gaffer,

they were talking about
Thomas Kavanagh.

Through painstaking
work through analysts,

we were able to identify the message
where The Gaffer had

a message congratulating him on

the arrival of a new baby
into the family.

This interview is about finding out
the truth of what has happened

and for you to give an explanation,
if you want to.

On the 17th of August 2017,

outgoing message to mobile,
which we attribute to you.

"Tom, had a baby during the night."

This was followed by a picture of
a small ch... a baby wearing a

Babygro with "Baby Kavanagh"
written on it.

Can you confirm that
that is your granddaughter?

No comment.

As he became aware of

the strength of
the case against him,

he became more and more troubled,

and he started not to look well.

As the enormity of the evidence
against him becomes apparent,

Thomas slumps to the floor off
of his chair in the interview room.

Thomas Kavanagh was a confident,
successful criminal

at the beginning
of our investigation.

At the end of it, because of
the hard work of the NCA and the

Garda Siochana, ultimately,
he had no choice

but to plead guilty at court
to the charges put.

36 million euro' worth of cocaine

has been sentenced
to 21 years in prison.

We know that those drugs would have

we've shown that is

They are being dismantled in the UK

But the heads of it
