And it's just got
one lady making tortillas.

Two guys with AK-47s were out front,
and I'm in the bathroom.

This is it.
This is the day I'm fucking dying.

I'm going to get killed.

And I meet El Jefe.

He says,
"Guero, what happened to my money?"

And I said,
"Man, I got to just face the music."

So I'm breaking it down to him.
This is what happened.

"That fucking Robin Hood guy,
he really fucked me."

And El Jefe's listening,
and he's reading me.

Does this guy think I'm lying?
Does he think I'm making this story up?

He says, "You're out of your fucking mind,
you stole the money."

-[guns cock]

He goes, "Remember how we work?
Plata or plomo?"

It's a famous Escobar term
that means "silver or lead."

Right there, I was like, "My life's over."

At 27 years old,
I was this multimillionaire.

And now, I'm going to die.

I got one chance to save my skin.

And I got to make him an offer
he can't refuse.

There's one thing they like the most.
It's that money.

So I offer him a nice interest payment
to the 3.2.

He said to me, "You're going to pay me

I get a call from a police source saying,

turned personal trainer,

over the possession of a bag
of $702,000 in cash."

And you think, "Well, hold on.
What? Go back, go back."

[man] The suitcase appears to contain
a large amount of Australian currency.

Sean Carolan's explanation
is that the $700,000 bag of cash,

that's Junior's money.

We just call him "Owen Hanson."

[suspenseful music playing]

[Michael] Once we worked out
that Junior was Owen Hanson,

and we started looking at the money.

So $700,000 cash,
where does it all come from?

It's gotta be drugs. No one deals
in that sort of amount of cash.

And then we get a US National
associated with it.

It was extremely suspicious.

After Sean had been arrested,

could have shown our hand,
what we knew about it.

But we didn't.

The trick was to try and keep it quiet
and start looking at Owen.

I'm like, "Where am I going
to get this four million?"

Let's start with the $700,000
that the New South Wales Police has.

I got to think of a way
to get this money back.

Sean Carolan gets out of jail,
and he goes,

"Don't worry. I got the perfect guy."

A friend of Carolan introduces
Owen Hanson to Craig Haeusler.

Major organized crime figure.

[Michael] Craig Haeusler is pretty
well-known amongst criminal community.

Quite influential
and could make things happen.

He's got the contacts,
and he's got the perfect lawyer.

Which brings us to a Sydney lawyer,
Michael Croke.

Better Call Saul would be
the best comparison

you could probably find with him.

Let's just say I know a guy
who knows a guy,

who knows another guy.

Michael Croke says,
"Mate, it's going to be easy."

"We'll get the money back.
Don't worry about it."

I'm like, "This is perfect."

But now, we obviously had to come up
with the story to make this thing legit.

-[Craig] Yeah, mate.

The problem is,
just the fact that it was in cash.

So, they're trying to ask
where I got it from.

How'd it come into Australia?
Did you bring it into Australia?

Which, of course,
you didn't bring it in in cash.

[Owen] Yes, anything...

[Michael] I got telephone intercepts,
wiretaps of Craig Haeusler.

He could be described
as a career criminal.

This way, we're able
to get the wiretap warrant.

The copper's apparently think
that Owen's part

of an international money laundering ring.

But, I mean, so what?
I mean, you know,

an international money launderer
can still legitimately have $700,000.

[Michael] So straight away, we knew about
the $700,000, that it wasn't legitimate.

They were trying to get the money back,
but they didn't know exactly how.

You know, my aunt from Australia,
she just passed away last week.

Oh, and did she have money?

The whole thing was not only brazen,

it was a little bit comical at times.

[Craig] You still don't want
to just throw away 700 either.

Just gotta cross my I's and dot my T's.

Enter into the picture, a very well-known
Australian rock promoter,

He'd bring in Fleetwood Mac.

Andrew McManus is desperate for money.

And he goes to the police.
He says, "Yes, it's my money."

We're kind of laughing, going,
"This is just nuts."

McManus was heard on phone taps later
saying, "Oh, I aced my interview."

"I just went full Hollywood mode."

[Andrew] Man, I was a fucking
Academy Award winner.

[Owen] Craig Haeusler called me,

and he says, "Hey, it looks like
we're gonna get the money back."

I said, "Fuck yeah."
He goes, "There's one last thing."

You got an interview
at the police department in Beverly Hills.

I said, "You got to be fucking kidding me.
I ain't doing no interview."

He said, "Mate, this is the only way.
It's not a US matter, mate."

"We're going to get the money back.
Just go and have the interview."

"I want you to go to
the Beverly Hills Police Department."

"They're going to connect you
to the New South Wales Police."

I said, "They're going to arrest me
right on the spot."

That's crazy, right?
That's like losing your ball

over the neighbor's fence,

-and next door is a big bull terrier.

And you climb over that fence
to try and get your ball back.

Just let that ball go, don't you?

[Owen] You got to remember,
I'm in to the cartel $4 million.

$700,000 would be nice to have right now.
I'm like, "All right, all right, I'll go."

[man on phone] Owen, what I intend to do
is ask you some questions

about the $702,000 cash.

Do you understand that?

[Owen] I was under the impression that
Michael Croke was going to be there today.

-Is he present?
-[man] No, he's not.

They're like, "No, he's not present."
I said, "Fuck that. I'm not interviewing."

So I call Croke. I say,
"Hey, mate, where the fuck are you at?"

He said, "Mate, just tell them the story.
We're good. We got this money."

And the Australians
know even more by then,

and they start throwing
these scenarios out to Owen,

which is kind of catching him off guard.

[man] Do you know a man
by the name of Robert Cipriani?

[Owen] No.

[man] Obviously, we have a lot of cameras

throughout the casino here
in Sydney, Australia,

and those cameras have shown
you and Sean meeting

with Robert Cipriani
at the casino on that day.

[Owen] Well, I... know, uh,
no one with that name.

[man] You sure about that?

[Owen] Positive.

Right there, I knew something was wrong
because they found Robin Hood.

How'd it go?

They kept asking a question
about Robert Cipriani.

-I said, "I don't know who that name is."
-How did they know that?

I don't know what's going on,
but it's fucking messy.

You are such an idiot.
This is just looking really bad.

[Owen] And I knew right then and there,
I wasn't going to get the 700K back,

and now, the Australian police
are after me.

But I was more worried about the debt
I had with El Jefe.

El Jefe gave me the ultimatum.

He still wanted to send
his cocaine to Australia,

but obviously, I couldn't go there.

And he told me, "This time, you're not
going Australia like you did before."

"You're going to be
working on the US side,

and you're going to be handling
the shipments."

is coming straight to me."

I mean, there's cartel guys
that've been trying to figure out

routes into Australia forever,

and I basically had to use my own crew
and figure out my own routes.

He had to keep running drugs
to pay back El Jefe.

If he doesn't, he will get whacked.

Now, I got to think of a way
to get this drug

that's so impossible to get,
into the country.

But I told myself,
"If you can get cocaine into Australia,

this stuff is like gold over there."

That's why they call it the "Isla de Oro,"
which is the Gold Island.

It was the only way out.
I had no other choice.

for drug traffic laws,

where you could go to jail for life.

The drug cartel, they already had routes.

However, if they had the ability
or could work with someone

that could open another avenue,

to get this product in.

that will get it through customs,

but you've got to put it
somewhere to hide it."

And I remember,
we were drinking wine at the time,

and I'm just like holding the wine,
and just drinking this wine, and I'm like,

"That's it."

I said, "If I break down
the cocaine into the liquid,

would you be able
to turn it back into cocaine?"

And he says, "Well, let's try it."

So I became a mad scientist.

-I pour all this Everclear in the bathtub.

Start chopping up the coke, just like...

It's 10,000 grams of cocaine
in this bathtub.

And I'm in there,
and I'm just mixing this thing, man.

Probably getting high from the fumes.

And I start funneling the stuff
into these wine bottles.

As stupid as this looks,
I'm going to make this work.

I got on the encrypted phone and I said,
"Craig, I need to do a sample run."

"I'm going to try ten kilos.
We'll see how it works."

[Alex] And the cocaine wine
gets shipped across to Australia.

There's a chemist that basically
baked the alcohol out of it.

[Owen] If this fucking works,
man, this is going to be a miracle.

I'm going to pay every dollar back
one way or another.

It worked.

We got ten kilos, and they came back
like 95% pure cocaine.

And he says,

and one of the things

He's like, "In Australia,
they're getting so much money

for like a brick of cocaine,

So if something happens to him,

"Hey, you're going to man this operation,

"And we're going to need you
to hire everybody from here on out."

"Who else can we add to the team?"

I looked at my little cuz.

I was like, "Yo, I need some help.

Tank was always being a big brother,

He just gave me the rundown.

He was like, "Man, all we're doing
is just pick up, drop off."

But he was like, "Man, if we get caught,
we getting a life sentence."

And I thought about my son,
and I was like...

"Fuck it, why not?"

I got Junior, who's one of my runners.

And from there, I have Pauley to ship it.

I didn't ask questions
because I didn't want to know.

Because if I get caught,
I'm like, "Yeah, it's wine."

"I don't know. What's in there?
I don't know, food?"

"I don't know, man. Like, what?"

In my brain, I knew, but I wasn't going
to start asking questions.

It was a lot of just... Go here, do this,
pick this up, bring it over here,

take it to the shipping facility,

and then go have fun for a few days,
and then fly home.

I'm like,
"That sounds pretty fucking easy, right?"

[Owen] Once Pauley shipped off
the cocaine in wine bottles,

Craig and his mates Down Under
would take care of the rest,

even laundering
the money back into the States.

So I put together my team, and I got to
get them all encrypted phones.

Criminal gangs are now using
encrypted mobile phones,

which make their communications
impossible to decipher.

So now I'm doing
a quarter a ton a week.

It's game time
when you get into these numbers.

It's not like one or two birds,

and our investigation determines
it has conductivity in Australia,

in Australia and say,

"Hey, we want to tell you
about this case we have."

They're like, "Oh, wait a minute,
wait a minute. We know those people."

RJ Cipriani, we're in Hollywood.

We're boozing, we're having shots.
I'm popping Vicodin.

They're popping Vicodin.
I'm doing bumps of coke.

And I'm like,
"Man, these guys are awesome."

And guess what?
He's got a fucking Phantom.

Once I saw that phone,
and it just clicked, I'm like,

"This guy's working in the game."

So when he says he could do it,
I said, "Fuck it, let's go for it."

[Tank] O-Dog hits me out of nowhere.

He says, "Listen. I need you
to meet up with those guys."

I'm like, "All right."

I call Tank and told him,
Al Wilson's the real deal.

This guy knows what he's doing.

You need to meet this guy
for a down payment.

So I'm pulling up in the parking lot.

I got money in a box, and I see him.

So I get out the car,
and I'm walking over there.

Give it to him.

The next day, Al Wilson asked
for five kilos. I said, "No problem."

[Rufus] I'm getting this call.
Owen, blowing me up, blowing me up.

He was like, "Man, my buddies, they want
these five keys down in San Diego."

All right, cool.

[Owen] This drop went smooth.
My runner, Rufus, got paid.

He gave me the money.

I got confirmation
that our product is in route,

and it's going to be in Australia
by Monday.

-Everything was dandy.

I said, "We're golden."

So I'm telling El Jefe,
"Don't worry, we got a new route."

He says, "Are you a fucking idiot?"

And he goes,
"Hey, you're with the feds, man."

I remember that.
I got in the shower that night,

and I just bawled my eyes out.
I was just devastated.

Prison, you got to be
as tough as you can.

There's no such thing
as weakness in prison.
