a predator lurking nearby.

While his 9-year-old
hunting dog, Adele,

can sniff out a warning,

she's no match

while I'm dealing

with this deer,
I'd have no chance.

I got no defense here.

We're going to get
the hell out of here.

-But with winter coming on fast,

Mike can't risk
walking away empty-handed.

completely skinned.

Now all I got to do
is peel these quarters,

put them in a bag
and we'll be out of here.

I'm going to leave the guts,
the vertebrae, the hide,

the head and, hopefully,
he's going to be satisfied

with what he's got here
and not follow my tracks.

-The kill site is just
2 miles from shelter,

but in the dark with 75 pounds
of meat on his back,

it could take nearly an hour
to get there through terrain

that's teeming with bears.

-I can't see anything,

so I really don't know
what she's aware of,

but we're going to get
out of here, go to camp.

These kind of situations
makes me very uncomfortable.

We're running the risk now
of everybody

finding each other in the dark.

-In Montana, lion hunter
Jake Herak is usually

down off the mountain
by nightfall.

-It looks to me like the dog
did a pretty big loop up here.

-Tonight, he's heading up in
pursuit of a chase gone wrong.

Earlier today, Jake's team of
Walker hounds picked up a scent

at late afternoon,
but by the time Jake caught up

it was too late
to call off the hunt...

-Hey!
Hey!

He's gonna jump.

Yep.
There he goes.

-...and the team took off
for another round.

-Yeah,
that's a big, big problem.

-It's a worst-case scenario

that puts Jake
and his dogs at extreme risk

because mountain lions
have far superior night vision,

and the dogs no longer
have the upper hand.

-When you're running around
out here in the nighttime,

about the only thing you can see

is about
10 feet in front of you.

-With limited visibility,

Jake relies on his emergency
GPS tracker to locate the team.

-All right.
Them dogs...

It looks like they're
a couple miles ahead of me now.

-He hasn't seen any real sign
of them for 3 hours,

but Jake's rule is that no dog
gets left behind.

-It's getting pretty cold out.

I just got to keep moving
and keep warm right now,

but there's no turning
back at this point.

They're not quitting,
so I'm not quitting.

-The sun set hours ago
in Arkansas,

but deep in the dark underground

beneath the Ozark Mountains,

homesteader and bladesmith
Jason Hawk

is a man on a mission.

-You kind of lose track of time
being in here.

I'm definitely starting to feel
a little bit of fatigue.

-He's come to these caves
in search of raw iron ore,

the key component of steel.

-The amount of savings
that this could be is huge.

-Jason spends thousands of
dollars every year on the steel

he needs to make
the blades he sells.

Now he's gambling that mining
the metal by hand

could give his business a boost
and not a moment too soon.

Last fall,
his family grew by one.

Now, with four mouths to feed,
every penny counts.

-It's a good start.

Despite the extreme risks
of this underground mission,

he's gotten lucky so far.

-I'm about halfway for where I
really want to be on this trip.

-And he's determined to stay
until he finds enough ore

to craft an experimental blade.

-I really would like
to get at least 50 pounds.

Iron ore is rust,

so we're looking for anything
that appears rusty --

streaks on the wall,
streaks on the rock.

Thought that was maybe some
ore for a sec,

It does seem to be
a shortage of dry land here.

Yeah, there's definitely
staining on the walls

so we're on the right course.

A lot of different
mineralization.

-Jason is now a mile deep
following the twists

and turns of an underground
river to stay on course.

-It's an easy thing to get lost.

Like anywhere else,
look behind you.

Remember what it looks like
the opposite direction

because people will go in,

they'll turn around and go,
like, "I didn't come this way,"

but there's only
one way through,

and that's through the water,

so I'm just going to follow
back the creek further,

see what else I can find.

That stitch runs the full

I made a point on there

and that ought to act
as a little needle.

Copper wire comes in handy
for a lot of different things.

Generally I use it for snares,

but today it's going to
wind up becoming thread,

kind of twist it up,
double it over,

give it a little more oomph
and strength.

Homesteader Morgan Beasley
has lived in the Far North

for 5 years,

and he's learned
to get used to the darkness.

I'm going to head up to the
mountain and look for a sheep.

-He has no time to lose.

A hunter can only make a kill
during daylight,

giving him
just a short window

to bring home the meat he needs
to make it through the winter.

-This is one of my last chances
to do any hunting this winter.

of the nearby mountains.

-I've got these skis this year,

a hybrid between the snowshoe
and the ski.

They're a lot faster
than the snowshoe.

-He's had luck there in the
past, but to reach them,

Morgan has to trek 6 miles
in total darkness.

-The whole idea is to get up
into position before daylight.

-And there's another
challenge --

2 feet of fresh snow.

It's unstable and unforgiving.

Man, the snow pack
down here is rotten.

Snow is thick,
a lot of hollow spots in it.

It takes a lot of effort
to get through it.

Well, here's the creek
I've got to cross.

-The outside temperature
is a bone-chilling minus-10,

and the water is 22 degrees.

-Walking in the creek
is way easier

than fighting
through this slush.

You know, a little risky
but I'm going to walk upstream.

I just hope I can make
enough time

to get up to the sheep area
before dawn

because we need
some meat very badly,

or it's going to be
a brutal, hungry winter.

-Meanwhile, on a Alaska's
Kodiak Island,

Mike is now just
a mile from camp...

-...but he's far from safe.

-He's hauling 75 pounds of raw,
bloody meat on his back.

-As I go, I constantly keep
hearing noises behind me,

alongside of me,
and at this point,

I have a very
uncomfortable feeling.

-The scent is like a beacon to
predators lurking in the dark.

Kodiak Island is home
to more than 3,000 brown bears,

but all it takes is one.

-The Kodiak brown bears
pretty much eat

anything they come across,
and they can be very dangerous,

especially this time of year
before they go into hibernation.

Wait.

It's either my imagination,
or there's something behind me.

I'm just going to keep beating
seed and get out of here.

Come on, honey.

-Mike is racing to protect
the kill on his back

and to make sure
the deer he claimed earlier

is still secure back at camp.

Eager to fill his freezer
for the winter,

he pushed the limits to make
two kills in a single day,

but the effort left him
exposed in the dark.

-When these things happen,
these kind of situations,

it's almost to the point
of being embarrassing

that I let it happen,

that I wait till that late
in the day

and that I took my shot
right at dark,

but I wanted that second deer.

Maybe I pushed it
a little too far.

-All he can do now is focus
on getting back to camp safely.

-This is the last really steep
part out of here

into this next saddle.

I'm going to be really careful.

I don't want to fall and twist
an ankle or something,

but it's
the shortest way back.

Hopefully she'll alert me
if we have anymore encounters.

with a pack full
of raw meat on his back.

I'm almost back to camp.

-...he's not out of danger

because his first kill
of the day,

a 100-pound black-tail deer,
is just as vulnerable as he is.

a bear in here

and got my deer.

Pulled it off the meat pull.

You can see where it fell,
and he drug it.

He carried it off.

The bear and the deer
are both apparently gone.

-It's a frustrating end
to a day that began on a high.

and hopefully that's enough
dinner for him.

-Mike bit off more than he can
chew and is paying a price.

-I just lost half
of my meat supply.

I worked a real hard,
long day to get two.

I'm back to square one.

This is not the way

I wanted this trip to end,
but at this point

I'm just going to take
my pack off,

get some backstrap out
and have some dinner.

Idaho where mountain man

Tom Oar is closing in
on his destination

after a 500-mile drive.

-My brother just sold his ranch
down here,

and he's going to move up
to the Yak.

He's going to be my neighbor.

-Tom's older brother, Jack,
is just about packed up,

but he's running out of time
before the big move.

-He's got a week to get out
of this place, so I thought,

"Well, I'll come down and help
him get some stuff together."

Hi, neighbor.

-Pretty soon, pretty soon.

-The sale happened so fast
that Jack was caught off-guard

in the middle
of a last-minute job.

He's a master riflemaker
who specializes

in 19th century
American muzzle loaders.

-Well, what do you got
going here?

-Well, I tried to build
this rifle.

It's a Hawken .58.

-The Hawken is a legendary
frontier firearm

once used
to take down buffalo.

Today, it's a collector's item
worth $2,000.

-So it looks like we got
a long way to go on this.

-Indeed, we do.

-Well, what a challenge.

He's hoping to make
a little money with this rifle

to get through the winter,
so it needs to be done first

even if we have to go
a night without sleeping.

Hell, I'm ready to help him.

-Tom is not a gunsmith,
but Jack is counting

on the extra pair of hands
to meet his deadline.

-The first thing --
This is called an under rib.

It gets soldered on
underneath the barrel,

and these are ramrod loops
that hold your ramrod in.

-The ramrod packs the powder
and ball down the barrel,

which is why the under rib
has to be securely attached

and requires a strong solder,

one that has to be heated
thoroughly to 1,100 degrees.

-We want the seal there
to get heated up.

-We have to heat the whole
barrel up until

it's almost red hot

and then lay the solder out
on the hot barrel,

and we'll attach
the piece to it,

and then after it all cools,

it'll be one solid
piece of metal.

Hopefully, this will work.

-When it gets hot enough,

you should see it
settle into place.

Come on.

-You can see a crack under it.

-Well, then it's not seated.

We just don't have enough heat.

-We got to get that barrel
super, super hot to melt

all that solder and that
16 inches that has to be melted.

By the time we get the torch
to one end of it,

the other side has cooled off.

and minus-10 degrees

in Montana's
Tobacco Root Mountains

where lion-hunter Jake Herak
is entering his

sixth hour of a marathon chase.

I haven't heard the dogs
there for a second,

but it sounds like
a couple of coyote.

-His dogs caught a fresh scent
in the late afternoon,

and are still going strong.

They won't give up until Jake
pulls them off the hunt,

but first he has to catch them.

-This definitely
isn't the easiest route,

but it's the route
I got to take,

definitely a lot
better coyotes than wolves.

-The longer they're exposed,
the more dangers they face.

At night, not only
are mountain lions

more likely to mount
a counterattack,

but coyotes and wolves
are also on the prowl.

-Wolves just kill to kill.

They don't necessarily always
kill to eat and survive.

They're attracted
to the dogs barking,

and they'll come in
and kill your dogs faster

than you can blink your eye.

[Bleep]

My GPS died.

Definitely not
a good sign for me.

This is my lifeline for my dogs.

I've got to get moving.

I'm going to go ahead and
track them the old-school way,

step for step.

straight for them.

-The dogs are trained to keep
a lion in a tree

until he calls them off
or until the cat jumps again

and starts another chase.

At this stage,
the team is so fatigued,

a third-round tonight
could be deadly.

-That's a damn good sight
to see these dogs.

It looks like Lefty got himself
in a little bit of a brawl here.

He's got a pretty good gash
on his armpit,

and it looks to me like

he's got a couple
scratch marks on his face.

to be taking a trip

to the vet clinic.

He definitely got in a scrap
with that cat.

These cats carry some
nasty bacteria in their claws,

so without taking care
of this properly

and getting him to the vet
and getting some antibiotics,

he might end up with a bad
infection, and it'll kill him.

I didn't get eyes on that cat,
but it really doesn't matter

because we're miles
from anything now,

so it's time to get the hell off
the mountain as fast as I can.

Jack cut from a solid
piece of cherrywood.

they had these keys

that went through
the forearm of the stock,

went through a little loop
under the barrel

and came out the other side.

It holds it into place.

-Well, let's see if we can lock
this barrel right in there.

-The tighter the fit, the more
accurate the rifle will be.

-Building a muzzleloader
uses a lot of exactness.

The way the wood fits with
the metal, the closeness...

-...that's the kind of thing

that a person looks for
when they buy a gun,

and there's a lot of detail
that you have to follow.

but we're going to get it.

jagged rocky peaks,

terrain that's notoriously
difficult to navigate.

The closer he can get tonight,

the better his chances are
of making a kill in the morning.

-He's made good time
trekking through the creek,

but with 3 miles still to go,
he can't afford a setback.

-Ugh, getting a little
too deep, too fast.

All it'd take would be
one misstep, one fall,

and the hunt would be over.

I think that looks like
as good of a place

I think I played this creek
as long as I can.

It's starting to get
a little more narrow,

a little deeper,
a little slicker,

so it's a good time
to try to climb out.

start moving up
in to the higher country.

to open up a little bit.

some rocks up ahead.

That should be the base
of the ridge.

-After 8 hours of hard trekking,

Morgan reaches the base
of the hunting grounds.

I can get up through it.

of the sheep before daybreak,

he's got to go up into
the rocks where they live.

before the sun comes up.

I don't want to get into
anything too hairy.

Should I really be going to
the upper ridge in the dark?

I'm not sure,
but at the same time,

without that meat
in the freezer,

it's going to be
an extremely hard winter on us.

-His visibility is just
a few feet in any direction,

no bigger than the radius
of his head lamp.

may lie around the next bend

or over the next cliff.

If he and Margaret are going
to survive the winter,

he needs every second he can

get to hunt down
some meat come sunup.

I feel very grateful.

very nice to me.

I don't know how much.

But between that and what else
I got, I'm going to be good.

I am whooped, I mean,
absolutely dog tired,

but right now
I'm excited at the same time.

Next step --
making knives from scratch.

All there's left to do now
is get the hell out of Dodge.

-Jack and I worked through
the night on the rifle.

We're sitting here,
we seen the sun coming up.

-Now they're down
to the final step --

attaching the flintlock
firing mechanism.

-The rifle that Jack built
is what they call a flintlock.

There's a piece of flint
bolted to the hammer

and the piece of buckskin,

and when you cock the hammer
back and pull the trigger,

the hammer falls and causes
a spark that hits into the pan,

and that kind of explodes.

Them are sparks, huh?

-That should do it.

Let's load it up and shoot it.

-[ Laughs ]

We got it to the point now
to where we're going to go out

and see if the thing can shoot,
the big test.

-I'll load it up.

I think you should fire it
off first.

-A muzzleloaded rifle is all
loaded with black powder

that you put down the barrel.

Then you tamp a ball
down on top of it.

-There you go.
-Cock the hammer.

Set the trigger and pull it,
right?

-Yep.

-There's just something
about them rifles.

They just feel good.

When I came here, you know,
all it was,

was a rough piece of wood,

and all the parts were in pieces
and everything,

and to see my brother put that
all together in as short as time

as what it took to do it
was pretty amazing really.

high-quality meat,

the entire winter

but a, you know, darn good
stretch of it if we stretch it,

but this is one
of my last opportunities

to get an animal
for the winter.

Weather is really
moving in here,

so hopefully I can get
a full day of hunting in.

-Dall sheep live on the steepest
parts of the mountain

where the temperature hovers
at minus-20 degrees,

and 45-mile-an-hour winds
are unforgiving.

-I got to get up this slope,

and I'm hoping they're
just right over there.

It's pretty complex terrain
up here,

but it's one of the things
the sheep like

because they can move, you know,
from ridge to valley to ridge

and kind of in
to these different hallows

and evade predators that way.

We're almost to the top.

I need to be really sneaky
if I'm going to see them first

before they see me.

looking in every flat spot
where they might bed down

and just kind of methodically
scanning the hillsides

looking for any sign of them.

I don't see any tracks
on the hillside.

Wait a second.
Is that one there?

Yep.

Yep, there's a couple up there.

There's one right on the crest.

If they hang right there,

I might be able
to sneak around right,

but the way this wind is blowing
I'm going to have to get close,

100, 150 yards,
to make a good shot.
