this jungle here,

it's not looking like something
that's very inviting, honestly.

My name's luke.
I'm 35 years old.

I'm a tattoo artist out
of southern california.

I'm pretty much
self-taught in basic survival.

Lots of youtube videos,
lots of reading books.

Just always been
something that's bothered me

to not be able to do something.

I feel like my inner
strength, honestly,

comes from my own pride.

I just need to do this to
prove to myself that I can.

This is the moment
of truth right here.

I feel like I've learned the
skills that make it possible,

and I want to show the world
that this is something I can do.

The heat and the sun, I think,

are my first-off
concerns around here.

My name's alyssa, and I
have a really strong background

in primitive survival skills.

The past few years, I've
been working with at-risk youth.

We try to teach them
important life skills

by surviving in the
desert for three months.

That's where my
experience comes from.

I believe a positive attitude

can get you
through any situation,

but I've never done
anything like this before.

I am nervous to take it all off
and run around in the jungle.

I don't have a big ego.

I'm not one to even really
like talking about myself.

So being able to
complete this challenge

is just going to make me so
much stronger as a person.

coral to deal with.

This is not gonna be fun.

one survival item,

alyssa has selected an ax,

while luke has chosen a pot
for cooking and boiling water.

I was kind of hoping that
we'd come across some crab,

maybe some lobster.

Either way, it's gonna
be good for boiling water.

All that good stuff.
We'll need that.

So, let's see what we got here.

Luke and alyssa have been
inserted on the eastern tip

of mexico's yucatan peninsula,

along a rugged stretch of coast
last populated by the mayans.

Under the blazing caribbean
sun, razor-sharp coral

and deadly sea snakes
are a constant threat.

By heading north over
three miles of jagged beach,

they'll hope to
establish a base camp

near the edge of
the dense jungle,

and from there, try to locate
one of several small cenotes,

or sinkholes,

the only reliable source of
drinking water in the area,

but also a favorite
hunting ground

of the island's large
population of crocodiles,

which can grow to
over 10 feet long.

Alyssa: What are some
of your survival skills?

I like to think that I'm
pretty well-rounded.

That's good to know.

I used to go out with my
friends, like, once a year.

We'd go out for like
four days at a time

and not bring any food or water

and just kind of live
off the land, you know?

But I've always
had an interest in it,

you know, kind of studied it,

watched videos online
and stuff like that.

And...Ow!

Luke seems awesome.
He seems really fun.

But you can read all
the books in the world.

And when it comes down
to it, you just need to practice

your skills in
real-life situations.

That sun is pretty brutal.

Scorched the
crap out of my feet.

The water's definitely gonna
be important out here, too.

We're gonna get so hot.

Like, we're gonna sweat buckets.

Luke: I don't expect her to have

every survival skill in
the survival handbook.

I don't expect her
to know everything,

but as long as we can get along,
I think that we're gonna have

a pretty successful
experience out here.

2. It's way too hot.

Luke: We're both
feeling drained already.

The only thing on my
mind right now is water.

This heat's unbelievable.

that sun -- it's just -- man,
it drains you so quickly.

Alyssa: Today we decided
we are going to go out

and go get some actual
water from the cenote.

Narrator: If luke and alyssa
are unable to locate and secure

fresh water from the
sinkholes by the end of day 2,

the effects of
extreme dehydration

will begin to quickly escalate
from headaches and nausea

to eventual brain
damage and death.

I don't think anything
can get better

than when we get water.

The problem is we could
end up walking a long way

to not even see anything.

Yeah, there's
lots of thorny stuff.

Definitely watch your feet.

I stepped on, like, a
whole foot full of them.

Well, I'm starting to see water.

I was hoping to see
a swimming pool.

It's dirty as hell.

Keep an eye out for crocodiles.

Luke: Looks nasty.

Formed by a collapse
in the limestone bedrock,

the cenote contains
extremely high levels of sulfur,

which can cause diarrhea.

And its dark, murky
color is a warning sign

of other deadly contaminants
from plant and animal life.

Oh, god. Looks like urine.

Luke: There's really
no way of telling

what kind of bacteria is
floating around in this water,

but at this point, it's the
only water we've found.

So, hopefully, we can boil it

to the point where it
doesn't make us sick.

Alyssa: The water that
we have is gonna definitely

so it's definitely changed
the rush to getting fire.

I'm just gonna go slow
with it till things start building.

How are your hands doing?

Hands are okay, but
shoulders are getting tired.

Oh, that [bleep] biting the
back of my leg right now.

getting all slippery.

We can't survive without
water for three days.

in the sweltering yucatan,

luke and alyssa have
had nothing to drink

and have yet to create a fire

to purify the only
water they have.

Before departing,
they were evaluated

by a panel of survival experts

and each given a primitive
survival rating, or psr.

Luke displays great confidence

and has studied a wide
variety of complex techniques,

but has never
applied those skills

in a long-term
survival scenario.

He scores a psr of 6.8.

As a youth survival counselor,

alyssa has amassed years
of actual field experience

and is an expert in
essential primitive skills,

but her passive nature
could prevent her

from applying that
knowledge effectively.

She earns a psr of 7.1.

Their scores will
be re-evaluated

at the end of their challenge,

if lack of hydration doesn't
force them to tap out first.

Luke: It is day 3.

We really didn't get
a whole lot of sleep.

We really need to figure out

this whole
lack-of-water situation

'cause it's really
starting to hurt.

We're gonna start a fire.

Alyssa: The hand
drill wasn't working,

so I wove some
really good cordage

so I could make a bow drill.

Today is the day.

Alyssa: Today is the day.

Today is the magical day.

Luke: Our whole eating
and water situation

is pretty much 100%
dependent on the fire.

Okay, I think I'm
gonna start cranking it.

Ready? Go.

Nice! That's it!

I'm tired.

at what we have.

Let's clear our
conscience of it.

Luke: I'm kind of at a
loss on the fire thing.

I really don't know
what to do about it.

to do something now.

You know what we could do

is see if we can make
some kind of water filter.

We're not gonna stop
working on the fire,

but it sure would help to
have a little extra energy

by having some water in us.

I really like that plan.

All right, I'm gonna
go see what I can find.

Might actually work.

Just test this to
see if it holds water.

And it looks like
we're in business.

The idea is fill one of these
things with sand and rocks,

and that's gonna
give us our best bet

on filtering that water out of
those cenotes that we found.

That's actual charcoal.

That's from some kind of
burnt driftwood or something.

We crush that up, that's
gonna make a real nice filter.

That's even better.

Everyone's heard
of a charcoal filter.

Narrator: Charcoal and
sand are natural filters.

If properly layered,
they will absorb

the majority of the
contaminants and bacteria

from the water as
it passes through.

Okay, that's actually full.

Let me pull this out here.

Look at that.

It's working pretty good.

How's it taste?

All right, here goes nothing.

Ahh.

That tastes like amazing water.

Ahh. Oh, my
god, it's refreshing.

If properly maintained,

the filter should work for the
remainder of the challenge.

But without a fire for cooking,

the choices of
food will be limited.

Is that gonna hold? Yeah.

Luke: As disgusting as they
are, it's okay to eat the raw snails.

It's the best thing that we have

to get some protein
in our bodies right now.

And there's pretty much an
abundance of them out here.

Narrator: For their size,

sea snails are rich
in protein and iron.

But to obtain a minimum
amount of required calories,

they would have to eat
about 65 snails a day.

Luke: This is gonna
be our first real food.

Sorry. Ohh!

Luke: Plan for today is
we're gonna go explore

a different part of the jungle
and look for some more food --

something different
than raw snails.

on just a different idea.

I'm gonna fill each
of these with rocks.

You wind this up. The
cord winds around it.

The stick goes up.

So, when you push it down,

the momentum
from the rocks in here

keeps it spinning to
push it back up again,

and then you just
keep doing it like that.

It's making a hole in
that pretty damn quick.

but I haven't slept at all
'cause the bugs are so bad.

these bugs are coming from,

It's day 8, and did
a little scavenging.

I found this, which could
be very useful in starting fire.

Can probably use
the bottom of that.

An idea that I have.

I've got a new invention.

Trying to do, like, a
telescope type of deal.

The two of those put together
-- it makes a pretty good beam.

You know, the inventions --
they may seem a little kooky,

but I'm gonna try
everything that I can think of

until we get this to work.

Alyssa: At this point,
no idea is a bad idea.

Maybe one of his inventions
will work, and that will be amazing.

But until then, I
am just gonna try

and stick with this bow
drill and try on the cordage.

So, I'm finding
that it looks like

I get a better beam of light

with just the single
piece of glass.

But it's still not,
like, really hot.

Honestly, I'm kind of
giving up on this idea.

I just don't think the glass is
good magnifying glass, you know?

Hopefully, this'll do.

them anymore.

out here on the rocks

Narrator: After 10 scorching
days in the yucatan,

luke and alyssa
finally have fire...

Awesome! Yes!

...But have subsisted
only on a meager diet

of sea snails and coconut.

Weak from the oppressive heat

and long trips to
fetch water for filtering,

they must secure more
significant sources of protein

if they hope to
make it to day 21.

Luke: So, I'm trying to
get an iguana with this trap.

I've got a stick right here,
which is holding up a snare.

And I've got some
coconut for bait right here.

I've pulled this log out so
that the iguana has no choice

if he wants it but to come
down the top of the log.

Hopefully, his neck
comes through like this

as he comes toward here,

and it catches
his neck like that,

and then he has nowhere to go

until I run over
and slit his throat.

This is gonna be
our fish basket --

fish/crab, hopefully.

It takes a lot of vines,
but the good thing about it

is that you can just
set it and leave it.

Let its magic do
the work, hopefully.

Luke: There's an iguana
checking out the trap that I set.

Oh, he's going toward it.

He's probably three
or four feet away.

If he goes through that
snare to get to the food,

I might actually have him.

Oh, he's going. He's going.

His head's, like,
right at the snare.

Unless he goes
down and to the side,

he has to go through it.

He's just sitting there,

but he's inching
closer and closer to it.

to the left of it.

I need to set my traps better.

next several days,

luke and alyssa continue
to check their traps

and set new ones.

Luke: Iggy will come along here,

and he's gonna try to
take a bite out of that.

This is gonna let the rock down,
and it's gonna slam on his head.

I've seen traces of some
decent-sized mammals around.

This is my opportunity to give
us some really good meat to eat.

Got the noose, the bait.

If he steps on any
one of these sticks

and he pushes this stick down,

and then he just
can't go anywhere.

Every day, I'm just, like,
just a little bit weaker.

So it gets harder
every single day.

Alyssa: No crab.

Luke: Should we try a
different hole, maybe?

Not now, to be honest.

I don't have the energy.

Alyssa: Our bodies
are really feeling it.

I feel like they're
starting to shut down,

and we're losing so much energy.

We expend a lot in the morning,
and then towards the afternoon,

we just can't really
move too much.

It's about 110 degrees
outside, and it's really hot.

Our energy is just
completely gone.

All I can think
about is, like, food

and how much I want just so
many different types of food.

I'm so hungry.

Snails are still there.

Nothing there.

Luke: [bleep]

and the rope kind of broke.

[ sighs ]

[bleep] I got to sit down.

You okay? What's wrong?

I just feel like I'm
gonna pass out.

I've been reaching my
breaking point, I think.

If you want, I can
just go get the water.

I don't know if
I'm gonna make it

all the way to the
water and back.

Alyssa: Luke's really
hurting right now,

and I mean, it's literally
my job back at home

to take care of people
who are kind of struggling.

So I just -- in
those situations,

that's where I kind of thrive.

Luke: Seeing spots [bleep]

my body finally, like,
hit its limit, I think.

I don't know how I'm
gonna do extraction.

Alyssa: Luke's really
struggling right now.

I'm getting really
concerned for him.

I know there's a way for us
to get some serious protein.

We have to.

Right now we are braiding
these fairly dead palms

'cause we are gonna do
some night crab hunting.

Narrator: Crabs in
this area are nocturnal

and could provide
the survivalists

with thousands of calories.

But alyssa's solution
to hunt them at night

is extremely risky.

The razor-sharp rocks, you know,

as you get closer to the water

and it just gets treacherous
there and it's dangerous.

And pitch-dark -- I just
hope I don't crack my head

on one of those sharp rocks.

And then you have your torch.

I got it.

I'm gonna go closer
to the beach a little bit.

Narrator: Even with torches,
luke and alyssa's visibility

on a cloudy, moonless
night is reduced by over 70%.

Luke: This is, like, the most
jagged part of the rocks --

ow!
-- That I would never walk on, ever, normally.

And I'm doing it at night.

[ gasps ] all right, quickly.

There's a really big one.

Where'd he go?

I moved for a
second, and he's gone.

This is the last
torch. It's going out.

I changed sticks for two
seconds, and he's gone.

He was a big guy, too.

We're pretty much just done.

With the exception
of a water filter,

luke's many
inventions have failed.

And despite finally
achieving fire on day 10,

they have only been able
to secure raw snails for food.

As a result, luke's strength and
confidence have slowly eroded,

while alyssa's quiet positivity
has remained an asset.

Their decisions over
the next four days

can still affect their scores,

but only if they're able to
secure the protein they need

to make it to the end
of their extraction.

Alyssa: All right, quickly.

This is the last
torch. It's going out.

And he's gone.

extraction point in time,

luke and alyssa
must move quickly.

Their destination
lies six miles away,

near two landmark rocks on
the other side of this peninsula.

The most direct route

will lead them away
from the jagged shore

through densely
packed, thorny jungle,

where the threat of
crocodiles remains.

But they only have eight
hours before the rescue vehicle

will have to turn around

and make the return trip
to safety without them.

Time to make like a
baby and head out.

Ugh.

We just need to get on the
road and get there in time.

Luke: The jungle keeps
getting thicker and thicker,

and if we keep
getting turned around,

I don't know if we're gonna
make it to extraction at this point.

We might have gotten lost.

We came out from
right there, right?

seemed like we would
just keep walking.

Wouldn't go back.

We're getting near.

The ocean!

I'm so glad to be out of that.

I'm about to fall over, though.

Alyssa: Is that it?

Luke: Nope.

Not quite there.

Narrator: Luke and
alyssa have miscalculated

and emerged from the jungle

over two miles south
of the extraction area.

Luke: We can still make it to
the extraction point on time.

We're just gonna make
our way down the beach

as quickly as we possibly can,

and we're gonna get
to that extraction point

by the time we need to be there.

I think I see the rocks ahead.

They definitely look
like the ones in the map.

We're getting close.

We're getting there.

[ engine humming ]

did you hear that?

I hear something.

That's a car.

Screw this.

Oh, my god, we're so close.

Oh, I definitely hear a car.

Oh, yeah, that's
a vehicle for sure.

That has to be it.

That's what helped
me get through,

but I think that I
have a long way to go

before I can call
myself an expert

because I found
out a lot of things

that I thought I
knew didn't work.

I mean, my confidence in
myself has skyrocketed right now,

knowing that I just
survived 21 days.

And I think at first, I sat on
the sidelines for a little bit,

but now I'm ready to take
kind of a leadership role.

Luke: Yes! Alyssa: Whoo!

three-week challenge

took a great physical
toll on both survivalists.

Alyssa lost 14 pounds,
and luke lost 21 pounds.

After a final psr evaluation,

alyssa's steady focus and
positive approach raised

her score significantly
from 7.1 to 7.8.

Despite his difficulties
and frustration,

luke ultimately persevered
and improved from 6.8 to 7.2.

Alyssa: So, I'm eating ice
cream since I've been home.

Mmm. So good to be back.

I just made it halfway to my car

before I realized
I was barefoot.

You know, the brain's still
wrapped around that beach,

I think, a little bit.
