My name is christina, I
am from louisville, kentucky,

and I pride myself on being
a pretty tough customer.

Growing up poor,

if I wanted to eat, I would
have to hunt it myself.

Deer, rabbits, squirrel,
frog legs, snake --

you name it, I can hunt it.

And now I'm here to show my
daughter that being a woman

doesn't mean you
can't be a badass.

I don't know whether to be
nervous, whether to be excited.

I think right now I'm most
nervous about the bugs,

because they have been
nasty since I've been out here.

abundance of confidence

and I'm completely comfortable

sleeping next to
someone that I don't know.

because as much pain
as we're gonna go through,

Narrator: This rarely
traveled area o

contains some of mexico's most
dense and mountainous jungles

infested with
disease-carrying mosquitos

and armies of
fearless fire ants.

Three miles to the northeast

lies several large
lakes, or cenotes,

which could provide a safe
camp and steady water source,

but they are also home
to 200-pound caiman,

giant red-tailed boas,

and highly aggressive
howler monkeys,

unaccustomed to the
presence of humans.

That would be the mountains.

And then we're headed
over to this water.

Excellent.

Lots of water --
which means what?

Fishing, swimming... Exactly.

...Bathing, drinking.

I like it all. Yes.

All right. Let's
do it. Let's go.

[ sighs ] how hot does it get in
kentucky during the summer?

108, 110 degrees. Really?

Mm-hmm. Damn.

So I'm used to the elements.
I'm a pretty good hunter.

We're definitely gonna
be eating, for sure.

I believe it.

I pretty much feel like I
have something constantly,

like, crawling on
my butt right now.

first survival experience
in a jungle setting,

mastery of a wide range

of hunting and trapping
techniques has earned her

Steve's years of backcountry
survival experience

and excellent interpersonal
skills as a life coach

home down there for 21 days.

Steve: It just looks like
a little tropical paradise,

so hopefully it proves
to be exactly that.

Those trees are nasty,
and there's tons of 'em.

The water's clear as day.

This is great.

Do we want to make our
camp away from the water,

because we'll be a
little bit further away

from potential
mosquitos and any animal

that decides it wants to
come and drink tonight?

christina: We have monkeys.

I smell something burning.

Christina: After a long hike
into the jungle, we're exhausted

and now I'm really thirsty
and we have no water.

Everything is so wet right now.

Want to give it a
shot for a second?

Narrator: The fire starter is
embedded with magnesium

that produces a spark
when scraped with metal,

but the number
of strikes is limited.

Steve: It's just so
humid out here,

and these fire starters
can wear down really fast.

If that goes, we
are...Not in good shape.

Oh, great. What?

There's like 100
bats flying around.

Oh, yeah. They're
definitely bats.

Good news -- they eat bugs.

They're looking
pretty aggressive.

I just don't want
to get bit by one.

I do not want to get rabies.

Steve: I think we've
got a ton of monkeys

swinging around our
whole entire camp right now.

[ sighs ]

we got zero sleep.

So we're both so drained
and extremely dehydrated.

[ sighs ]

my finger's locking up.

There's no water in my muscles

and it's literally just freezing
up when I hold something tight.

Christina: We got to
get this [bleep] going.

It's like a have-to situation.

[ sighs ]

christina: Every time we
strike this thing could be the last.

So keeping my fingers crossed.

We have fire in the jungle!

so today, we attempted
to make fire again,

and we got it started.

So we have a fire!

Now we can drink lots of water.

Now the goal is not losing it.

Dude, my belly's
growling so loud.

Steve: My belly
hasn't growled at all.

Mine says, "water before food."

christina: I'm going to
make a deadfall trap.

This actually
works really great...

No, I'm sure it does.

...With, like,
squirrel and rabbits.

Animal comes in, eats,
hits it, falls down, boom.

Animal's dead, I
come, find breakfast!

Now, this is very tedious.

You have to get just
right so it doesn't fall.

I'm pretty confident I can
catch something in this jungle,

because I am,
like, really hungry,

and I know my hunting skills.

And I know if I come
across something,

I will kill it --
straight up will kill it.

I don't care what it
takes, I'm gonna kill it.

and any food that we can get,

can grow up to 10 feet

and weigh 50 pounds.

At just 3 pounds, this snake
will provide the survivalists

about 180 calories each, or
the equivalent of two eggs.

but it's not an option
when you're out here.

We discussed a couple
of different shelters,

and we thought a
teepee would be great,

'cause it's actually
pretty mobile.

So if we needed to move
it, we could easily pick it up

and move it back to
a different location.

I just want to cover it.

We'll just keep one
big one in the middle.

Christina: In the middle
of building our shelter,

it just started downpouring.

So of course
everything inside is wet.

So much for our bed being dry.

Steve: We just
need to keep this fire.

We got a long night.

[ thunder crashes ]

and it's raining,
and it's cold, it's wet,

and the mosquitos are, like,
totally [bleep] with us tonight.

She's getting bit
up. I'm getting bit up.

Christina: Oh, my god.

These bitches bite you over
in the same spot every time.

It's itching so bad.

First night, the bats

were helping us get the
mosquitoes out of the way.

But since we've got

So we had to fend for

Christina: The jungle
has definitely beat my ass.

So I was talking some
mad [bleep] last night.

Steve remained calm.

He was just like, "you got
to stop being so negative."

and I'm like, "man [bleep] you.

You be positive. I'm
gonna be realistic.

I'm, like, dying over here."

This is a nightmare.

Steve: Christina -- I can't
think of how many times

she's screamed like,
"ow," or, "oh, I'm done."

she likes to vocalize when
something's wrong, and I don't,

because I think it adds
negativity to the situation.

You know, if it wasn't
for the mosquitoes,

it would have been awesome.

The mosquitoes are awful.

Christina: You know, when you
raise a teenage daughter alone,

you don't have the luxury

to sit around and
feel sorry for yourself.

Instead, I'm gonna get out,

and I'm gonna do
something about my situation.

It's a termite's nest.

Narrator: Since termites contain
trace amounts of nepthalene,

a chemical used for fumigation,

burning the nest sometimes
acts as a natural insect repellant.

Christina: This nest is a
really good find, but I hav

not actually the water.
I'm a great swimmer.

I have a fear of what's
underneath the water

because I can't see it.

Something bit me.

This is a little nerve-racking.

[ chuckles ] that's

I am becoming a
jungle queen fo' sure.

Steve: Yeah, there's
just tons of them.

Once again, the mosquitoes
are striking in full force.

They have been all night.

The bug bites

like the most I've cried

in probably 15
years. I fully believe it.

When I tell my daughter
how much I cried,

coach people on confidence

and, you know, not giving up

and not worry about
what's going wrong

and think about
what can go right.

when you don't have the food
in your system and the sleep.

I think one of the
reasons I'm so emotional

is I haven't eaten
anything since that snake.

and I don't feel
as sharp mentally.

But if we get a little
food in our system,

even if I don't sleep, I feel
like I can still push through.

Made this fish trap.

I'm gonna try setting it
in a shallow spot here

and if it works,

set it in a deeper spot
with a little longer cord.

Last night

was incrementally worse
than the previous seven nights

due to, well, lack of sleep.

All night long, all she did
was bitch and moan and yell

about the mosquitoes,
which were biting me, as well.

It's pretty frustrating
when someone

that's going through the
exact same thing as you

just wants to talk about
how miserable it is.

So, I was gonna hang
out outside for the fire

[sighs] so I wouldn't get
bit by mosquitoes and fleas.

It's not working.

I'm so exhausted.

I got mud all over me.

It's just so cold, though.

Every day, I like
to start off here,

with positive thoughts
and positive vibes,

refocus after the evenings,

be perfectly honest --

jungle. It's my partner.

Every night, I have to deal
with her incessant complaining.

I just hate dealing with this,

it's wet and it sucks.

Today, we're building
a raised platform

so that we can get
off of the ground

and hopefully
away from the bugs.

If we don't, we will probably
not be happy tomorrow,

the next nine days.

bugs do not get on us tonight.

to think about it right now.

It feels so good right now
just to lay down off the ground.

So we're getting a
little sugar out of it.

I finally cut enough of them
down and cut my fingers enough

that I found the good part.

how difficult this is

to stay in the challenge

but is on the brink of collapse.

To reach their extraction point,

on a treacherous, four-mile hike

through mountainous
jungle terrain to this lake,

to safety on the other side.

Christina: The jungle
really kicked my ass.

hardest thing I've ever done in my life,

and I can reach down now

and know that it's
okay to show emotion,

and it just opens up so
many doors in my real life.

I cannot wait to share this
experience with my daughter

and just let her know.

It is amazing what
you can actually do

when you set your mind to it.

apply her hunting skills for 21 d

christina lost a
total of 30 pounds.

She leaned significantly
on her partner for support...

[ voice breaking ] I just
can't do this anymore.

...But ultimately
toughed it out.

As a result, her psr slightly
rises from a 6.4 to a 6.7.

Steve lost 14% of his muscle
mass and a total of 36 pounds

and showed significant
mental and physical stamina

in providing for both
himself and his partner.

Isn't it delicious? Mm-hmm.

His psr increases
from a 7.2 to a 7.9.

Both ultimately proved

they have what it takes to
survive "naked and afraid."
