all welcome back to the midlife ride I'm

Catherine Chris is behind the camera

today and if you're a subscriber this is

a video you might not have been

expecting from us but we are the midlife

ride and this is a midlife issue that I

am dealing with I have absolutely hated

my hair from as far back as I can

remember when I was younger it was too

thick never long enough either not

straight enough or not curly enough it

was always too frizzy and never light

enough yes I used to use sunin now I

still have most of those complaints but

as I age my hair is getting much thinner

and much lighter okay it's gray I

stopped coloring my hair during the

pandemic and after 44 years I thought I

had pretty much accepted the hand I'd

been dealt but lately I've been

wondering did I give up too soon my

first attempt at masking my hair issues

was to go with my mom to try on some

wigs the experience was great but after

I kind of thought maybe all I needed was

to darken my hair now I certainly don't

want to go back to spending hundreds of

dollars and hours on end sitting in a

salon chair just for a couple weeks of

gray coverage so I started doing some

research on alternative methods and came

across tons of videos on YouTube

claiming that a do-it-yourself coffee

hair dye was a moneys saving safe and

effective way to darken your hair and or

cover your Grays though the videos had

hundreds of thousands if not millions of

views everything I clicked on was

complete garbage I'm not sure if they

can be classified as scams but at the

very least they are completely

misleading one of them for example

showed before and after pictures on the

thumbnail and for me that was very

compelling but when I clicked to watch

there was actually no one in the video

just a hand mixing ingredients some

background music and words on the screen

some have recipes but no clear

instructions and very few actually show

people doing it others show women with

jet black black hair and no visible

Grays what is the point of that so I

decided I was just going to have to try

it out for myself and if you're still

watching first of all thank you we

appreciate you very much second I'm

going to show you all of my gray hair

the exact recipe for each of the three

experiments I'm going to try and we're

going to find out together if coffee can

actually darken hair and cover Grays

stay tuned I'm going to use what I have

on hand which is

is this Kroger instant coffee original

roast according to the package

instructions you're to use 6 oz of hot

water which we're going to heat in this

pan okay our water has started to boil

I'm going to go ahead and use one

tablespoon of this ground

coffee H I'm going to do another whole

tablespoon cuz I'm crazy like that I'm

going for one more tablespoon

that makes three so far that looks

pretty dark at 3 tablespoon so I think

I'm going to go with that so now we've

let the coffee cool and we're going to

mix in some conditioner I have here some

L'Oreal everpure sulfate free color care

system conditioner which I think will

work nicely since we are trying to color

and we don't want to strip any of the

color out from what I've read they

suggest putting in two tablespoons but

I'm going to start with one and see how

it goes so that's about

one and I'm going to mix

in some

coffee remember this is 6 oz of water

mixed with 3 tablespoon of this instant

coffee original roast

and I'm just going to mix this until I

get the consistency that I'm used to

seeing with the Box color that I used to

use when I used to color my hair it does

seem pretty thick but it's it's mixing

very nicely I'm going to pour in a

little

more and now you can see it getting very

thin so I am going to add more

conditioner going to put in another

tablespoon of conditioner

okay Chris is curious about how this

concoction

smells

so it smells mostly like conditioner

with a little hint of mocha to it now

that we have our solution we're going to

take a look at my gray hair most of it

now I have I have naturally dark brown

hair but with all of the gray it looks

much lighter I do have gray all all

throughout but most of it is on the

right side covered by a dark brown

coating there is gray significant Grays

underneath on this right side so that's

what we're going to be focusing on

mostly but we are going to put the

solution on all of the hair I did want

to let you know from the six oz of water

and 3 tbspoon of the instant coffee that

we used I poured PED in about 2 oz of

that solution into 2 tablespoon of the

conditioner that process was a lot

easier than I expected based on my

experience I think the consistency we

had was absolutely perfect it's so much

like box color except it smells

fantastic so now I'm going to wait at

least an hour I'm not sure I'm going to

probably do some laundry and just see

how I feel we will see I'm very hopeful

I really hope this works so stay tuned

it has been about 2 hours and 16 minutes

what is the significance of that length

of time well there is none I'm going to

hop in the shower then I'm going to let

you see the finished result once I have

my hair dry now I can tell you right now

my hair is hard

it is crispy and I can see definitely

you know the parts that were gray look

kind of caramel colored and of course

you know the part that isn't gray looks

just dark brown still so we're going to

see what it looks like when my hair is

dry because that's really the only way

we're going to tell so stay tuned be

right back I'm out of the shower and

just to let you know I opted just to

rinse no products whatsoever just water

now I can still see

gray I kind of feel like it's a little

different

color that it might be a little

more like caramel

colored um and I have read that if you

do this

consistently every week the the hair

will darken so I am going to probably

try doing that every single week until

our trip to see if I get better

results well if there's a difference in

my hair color it is very minimal I feel

like all of the Grays are still there if

not just a little more muted maybe now

remember I didn't use dark roast coffee

I was using old regular original roast

if I do try this again which I think I

will I might try dark roast I might do

it a little longer I might put a little

more coffee in it has been 8 days since

the last experiment and I've decided to

try again this time however I'm going to

use dark roast coffee Starbucks right

here here now these are whole beans so

Chris ground them up for me 3

tablespoons worth just like we did last

time in six o of water now this is not

instant so instead of Brewing it like we

normally would to drink it I did the

exact same thing we did last time I put

it on the stove in 6 oz of water 3

tbspoon of finely ground coffee beans

and everything else is the same now I

will tell you that because it's not

instant coffee it did not dissolve in

the water this is what you will see at

the bottom of your pan and I decided not

to leave it in because that will make it

most like what we did last time except

for the dark versus medium roast

so this is our

concoction it looks very much like it

did last time in consistency however I

do feel the uh color is darker so I'm

going to stick with exactly the way we

did it so if you don't remember go back

to the beginning and watch again I'm

going to leave it on for the exact

length of time we did last time which

was 2 hours and 16 minutes so before I

go and apply the mixture I'm going to

show you what we're starting with again

now remember it's been 8 days so what I

did last week definitely wore off but I

will tell you I did notice a difference

throughout the week because I didn't

wash my hair for the first couple days

anyway so it did darken a little even

after that initial rinse

so here we have

gray and that's what we're trying to

cover but I am going to do my whole head

just like last time so I'm going to go

ahead and apply this mixture and we will

see you back when my hair is dry

again well I'm sorry to report that did

not work in fact I think it worked even

less than the regular roast

instant but

again you know not seeing much results

but it hasn't harmed my hair in fact my

hair feels and smells lovely I'm not

giving up I'm going back to the drawing

board I'm going to review some more

videos that other people have put out

and I'm going to try to either prove

that they know what they're talking

about or debunk what they have put out

for the world to see

so stay tuned for that okay guys this is

my last attempt at trying to cover my

grays with coffee if you're like me you

might be a little discouraged at this

point but you also might be thinking

well maybe it wasn't left on long enough

maybe there wasn't enough coffee used in

the mixture so this is going to be the

experiment to end all experiments here's

what I've decided to do because

additional research useless it's all the

same garbage out there so I decided on

my own I was going to use the leftover

that I had from the very first

experiment it's been sitting in the

refrigerator for a week and a half I

took it out it was about 4 oz left of

that mixture I put it on the stove I

added four more tablespoons of the

instant coffee and then I mixed it with

the conditioner and left it in the

refrigerator overnight

so this is what that looks like I might

wind up using a little more conditioner

because it is a little thinner as you

probably noticed so it might get drippy

I'm going to apply that and I am going

to leave it on for 8 hours at least if

this doesn't work I will be absolutely

convinced that there is no way you can

cover your Grays or darken your hair

using a do-it-yourself coffee mixture so

let's take one last look at all of my

gray hairs just so that you know they're

all still

there nothing has changed

and wish me luck I a little nervous that

I might come out of this with no hair at

all but we're going to find out in 8

hours stay

tuned so I got out of the shower and

looked in the mirror and I'm like oh my

god did this actually work I was kind of

freaking out and then my hair hair

started to dry

and it's pretty much back to normal let

me tell you it might be a little bit

different but having all of that stuff

on my hair for 8 hours I feel like it's

very frizzy it's not as soft as it was

when I just had it on there for 2 hours

I mean it's like on a crazy caffeine

high just frizzen out everywhere it was

really hard to get out in the shower

again I did not shampoo I only rinsed my

hair but it took a really long time and

when I look at my scalp there's still

like bits of coffee hard hardened coffee

pieces in there so keep that in mind

overall we'll look at my hair but I do

not recommend this I am absolutely

convinced that this does not work and

will not work no matter what you do I

hope you're convinced too but if you
