For over three decades, the Undertaker

didn't just define an era.

The Phenom.

The Prince of Darkness.

He is truly superhuman.

He became the very soul of Sports Entertainment.

He is the epitome of WrestleMania.

Today, we look back at the legendary career

of The Undertaker.

This is WWE's Greatest Moments.

Rest in peace.

Acknowledge me.

My God.

Stone Cold with the beer bath.

Ah.

This is surreal.

Look at this.

He slammed him.

Welcome, everyone, to WWE's Greatest Moments.

I'm Michael Cole, and in this edition, we're looking back at

the iconic career of the one and only Phenom, The Undertaker.

For when you look into the eyes of The Reaper,

your soul lies in his hands.

With a Hall of Fame career spanning over three

decades, there's no questioning the impact the Deadman had on

this industry, and it's still continuing to shape the future

of professional wrestling as one of the coaches on LFG.

It's a feel.

Feel it.

And speaking from personal experience,

the most bone-chilling entrance of all time.

Over the years, The Undertaker's entrance left audiences

breathless, but our very first moment takes us back to his very

first entrance, the debut of The Deadman at Survivor Series 1990.

So, without further ado,

I'll introduce to you now my mystery partner.

I give you The Undertaker.

Holy cow.

Look at the side of that ham hock.

It was nerve-wracking walking out

because it was quiet.

You could hear people talking like, "Holy crap.

What is this?"

The fact that you saw this guy walk out, this

monster of a man, it felt like it was new, it felt like

something we hadn't seen before, 'cause it was.

He towers over everybody.

And then you have to take into consideration all

these top guys at the time are in the ring,

and I'm about to go lay waste to all of them.

Oh.

Oh, Jeepers.

Oh.

He just got nailed with the Tombstone.

When he made his debut, those slow, methodical

movements, the way he carried himself, the composure.

It was a pretty remarkable debut.

This Undertaker seems to be impervious to pain.

The character was so unbelievably unique.

He hits like a ton of bricks, this guy.

What a special thing.

Nobody had any idea just how big the Undertaker would get.

The Undertaker sent shivers throughout

the entire professional wrestling landscape.

The sheer mystique of the Undertaker was one that no one

had ever seen before, and his opponents never quite knew how

to overcome this supernatural sensation.

Fear not, Yokozuna.

You shouldn't be afraid.

You should be terrified.

The 1994 Royal Rumble saw the 500-pound WWE Champion,

Yokozuna, attempt to literally bury the Undertaker once and for

all when they faced off in a casket match.

The loser would be the man who got locked inside a coffin.

What would happen next is something

I am still in shock over.

Shoved into the casket.

This could be it.

Could be it.

Oh, that's it.

Close to the lid.

This one's over.

Wait a minute.

What's Crush doing out there?

It's a great game plan.

Another member of Fuji's forces.

What would happen if that character

was put into a casket?

The Undertaker is not moving.

That's it.

I was extremely scary and almost invincible,

and then this happens.

I will not rest in peace.

The Undertaker, that character takes on so much

of a life of its own.

The-the myth of it.

What is this?

Oh, wait a minute.

Wait just a minute.

So this is really when the mystique

of the Undertaker starts to take form.

The Undertaker is levitating.

That whole thing laid the groundwork for

everything else that we would do moving forward.

As the 1990s drew to a close,

the Undertaker evolved the Deadman into one of

the most feared and respected characters in WWE history.

He is the personification of evil.

An injury would sideline the Phenom for a few months.

And when he returned, it would be a side of the Undertaker we

never thought we would see, and it was badass.

We are just moments away from our main event.

So we had this huge WWE Championship match between

Triple H and The Rock going on at this time.

There's the Rock Bottom.

What the hell is that?

What is this?

What the hell?

What is this music?

He never stepped outside this bed, ever,

into all the evil.

Now back from the dead.

He's here.

My God, it's the Undertaker.

Being in the ring with my friends

and the new version of the Undertaker coming down the ramp

at you is a special moment.

As great as the Undertaker character is and was,

I was constantly trying to keep that character fresh.

Oh, my God, it's carnage.

The Undertaker is whipping ass.

Part of the challenge when you're a WWE

Superstar is to stay a step ahead of the curve and change

things before the fans realize they need changing.

And I think that's where Undertaker was.

He's no longer a Phenom, JR.

He is now a bonafide American Badass.

I don't know if the character would've continued to

grow if I hadn't have moved away from the traditional Undertaker.

One of the most storied rivals of the Undertaker's

career was his very own brother, Kane.

These two went through the depths of hell in some of the

most hellacious battles we'd ever seen.

The heated rivalry between two brothers with a fiery past.

The siblings would walk through the fiery depths of hell

under the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania 20,

in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden to go

to war one more time.

Oh, yeah.

I think the Undertaker versus Kane

rivalry transcends WWE.

It was these themes that all of us could relate to,

and these larger-than-life characters that,

that at the same time, were also able to incorporate

very human elements into the story.

It appears that the Undertaker would love to bury

his brother, Kane, when this match is over.

We were in the midst of a great- a great match

and-and, you know, kind of finalizing our story.

It's the best story that WWE's ever told.

I'd stay well out of the way of both

of these individuals.

When I wrestled Undertaker at WrestleMania 20,

we had the creativity to just go out there,

and the story would write itself.

Now, Kane.

Look, look.

Oh, what a Chokeslam.

Undertaker just sat up.

Oh, no.

Lord knows Kane deserved what he got

at WrestleMania 20.

Oh, no.

It is a-

Oh.

-Tombstone Piledriver.

Kane can now rest in peace.

Big brother had to put little brother

back in his place.

The Undertaker has Tombstone Piledriven his

demented brother, Kane, all the way to the outskirts of hell.

One year later, at WrestleMania 21,

The Undertaker ran his impressive undefeated streak

to 13-0, defeating the self-proclaimed legend killer,

Randy Orton.

But Orton didn't walk away quietly.

Tonight, the legacy

of The Undertaker will die.

Hey.

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute, it's The Undertaker.

How the hell is this?

I don't get this.

His obsession with destroying the legacy

of The Phenom led to one of the most shocking moments

in SmackDown history.

Father, if you would, please, open the casket.

That was such a huge moment because The Undertaker,

that was his way of getting in my head.

That's a very lifelike mannequin for Undertaker.

This is why I never throw

fake funerals with mannequins.

You never know if it's actually going to be a mannequin

inside the coffin.

Undertaker, I beat you mentally.

I know Randy has a lot of bravado, but when it comes to

mind games, I'm not sure there's anyone in our industry who's

ever done them better than The Undertaker.

What?

The coffin.

Hey, hey, hey.

Oh, my.

When the crowd erupted with just the-the peek

there, it was like, "Oh, man, they're invested."

Randy's the only one that doesn't know.

Oh, yeah.

Oh man.

Undertaker's got Randy Orton.

The Undertaker's alive and well.

Be careful who you try to play games with.

It was always the mystique of how Undertaker was

gonna strike and what he was gonna do.

Whoa.

thrown into the casket.

Welcome to mind games 101, Mr. Orton.

You want to talk about mind games, Cole, The Deadman,

The Undertaker is the master of the mind game.

Throughout the years, we've seen The Undertaker take

on challenges from superstars of all walks of life, giants,

mastodons, even snakes, but no one got into the core

of The Phenom quite like Mankind.

Look out down below, look out.

Oh my gosh.

From his very first night in WWE,

Mankind seemed to have The Undertaker's number,

and it led to some of the wildest brawls in WWE history.

I didn't destroy just an ordinary man,

I've destroyed The Undertaker.

In October, 1996, these two would meet in a WWE first.

Mankind, I am going to bury you alive.

The loser would be the man

who was quite literally buried alive.

Ladies and gentlemen, we're just minutes away from

someone being buried alive.

For me, it was an incredible opportunity to have a

first of its kind type of match.

Here it comes.

Oh.

There's a legitimate chance that,

you know, you're going to see the end of The Undertaker.

Mankind.

Oh.

As soon as Mankind is buried alive, The Undertaker,

his hand will be raised.

Oh, no.

A bunch of the bad guys come running down,

and they end up burying Taker.

They're all burying The Undertaker alive.

I've never seen anything like this before.

He's alive.

When that purple glove come out of the dirt, man,

it's really one of those moments that stands out as an iconic

moment of wrestling history.

The Undertaker lives.

The paranormal powers of The Undertaker were truly

something you had to see to believe.

He's floating.

What?

But you never know when, or who,

The Deadman was going to strike next.

At the 2006 Royal Rumble, as Kurt Angle defeated Mark Henry

in a World Heavyweight Championship match,

the floodgates of hell opened up once again.

Still champion, Kurt Angle.

What?

Oh my.

Wait a minute.

What the hell is this?

The whole presentation was powerful

and with the music dropping, the lights down,

people watching in the crowd, you know,

the smoke up the entrance.

It was a whole mystic, and it was so awe-inspiring

and-and-and just dramatic.

What the hell is going on here?

The Phenom is here.

They didn't even need to see me in the ring.

They loved it.

They couldn't get enough of it.

Now, I didn't know if I was going to crap my pants.

It's the greatest entrance of all time.

You know, most people just come out

and ask for a title shot, The Undertaker shoots lightning-

Oh, I don't like that look.

Holy [bleep].

What the hell's going on?

and moves the ring.

How cool is that, man?

You throw lightning bolts.

I would have never lost a match if I had just thrown lightning

bolts all the time.

Undertaker wants the World Heavyweight Championship.

When you talk about The Undertaker,

you cannot understate the once-in-a-lifetime record

he has at the Showcase of the Immortals.

The greatest performer in the history of WrestleMania.

Heading into WrestleMania 36, the legendary career of The

Phenom was winding down, but not without one more clash

on the grand stage.

In true Undertaker fashion, this one was filled with theatrics

in a WrestleMania first.

A cinematic boneyard match against

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles.

Come on, old man.

Yeah.

Come on.

What are you going to show me what an old man--

Let's see- let's see what you got.

I got enough for you.

Yeah.

Get up, boy.

You wanted this.

Come on.

Although it was in a different format-

Take some of this.

Tough guy, take-

you know when things are that good.

That boneyard match, the 25-minute fight scene,

and they beat the crap out of each other.

Oh, yeah.

This is the biggest match of my career.

No doubt about it.

Ashes to ashes, and dust to dust.

Yeah.

This is my moment right here.

That match was insane.

They had every theatrical fireworks spectacle.

Nowhere to run, ah?

The coolest cinematic matchup

in the history of cinematic matches.

You look back at that buildup,

the payoff of the match, I mean,

that's storytelling at its best.

As we saw earlier, The Undertaker made his ominous

debut at the 1990 Survivor Series.

And with each tombstone, The Undertaker came closer to

being the number one contender to the WWE Championship,

held by "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan.

What you gonna do when Hulk Hogan,

my Hulkamaniacs, and the largest arms in the world bury you,

Undertaker?

But at the 1991 Survivor Series, a dark storm approached.

All your Hulkamaniacs can suffer

for the rest of eternity.

I feel it, Monsoon.

Hulkamania's going to be put to rest.

The Undertaker was undefeated.

Nobody really got to him, but Hogan was the guy that was

always going to have to find a way.

The Undertaker's going to have to face The Hulkster.

The Undertaker came in, and he just

wrestled the great Hulk Hogan.

This was a huge deal.

Hogan was the guy.

I don't think you can hurt The Undertaker.

And he was this newfound monster

that was rolling over everybody.

Tension in the air, you can cut it with a knife.

Here I am, in the biggest match of my career.

And Ric Flair comes in.

Hulkster said he's going to take out--

Oh, what's this?

Where's he going?

Ric Flair wanted to make sure that I didn't win.

Look at this.

Flair with the chair, a steel chair.

Oh, get out.

We got a new world's champion.

Well, that's ridiculous.

We got a new World Wrestling-- Champion.

100% that win put The Taker on the next level.

If you win the world title and you beat Hulk Hogan,

you're on top of the world.

Walking out of here as

the new champion, The Undertaker.

It's now time for our number one moment,

and it's one that will be talked about for centuries.

On one side, "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, who

was appropriately nicknamed-

Mr. WrestleMania.

due to the awe-inspiring performances he put on

at the show of shows.

Why?

Because I can.

On the opposite side stands The Undertaker,

who, at this point,

had been undefeated at 16 WrestleManias.

The greatest streak alive.

In front of over 72,000 fans,

heaven and hell were about to clash at WrestleMania 25.

Can Michaels hang the first loss ever on

The Undertaker has been the question on everyone's mind.

And Michaels kicked out.

It was magic.

I mean, the stars aligned, and you just know when you're out

there, like, "We are killing this."

Oh, and a kickout again.

Impossible.

Oh, my.

Oh, my.

Good god.

Oh, my God.

Storytelling is what we do,

and it's storytelling at its finest.

And Undertaker made it back.

He's back in the ring.

The streak's alive.

The end all be all of doing this job is just creating

a glimmer of doubt.

Tombstone.

Oh.

Tombstone.

And a kickout.

I am not believing this.

I just had an out-of-body experience.

Can Shawn Michaels tune up the band one more time?

There it is.

Sweet Chin Music again.

Kiss the streak goodbye.

And again.

I was working with Randy at that WrestleMania, and I

remember watching as I was getting ready and thinking like,

"We are--."

It was the greatest thing I'd ever seen.

Michaels caught in midair.

Tombstone.

He did it.

17 and 0.

What an absolutely

unbelievable match.

In my opinion, the single greatest one-on-one match in WWE

history, and another enduring moment from The Undertaker,

whose legacy will echo throughout eternity.
