This hill now is very steep.

There's this absolutely wrecking, the talk,
and the trailer, and everything around it.

And there are three crushes,
just barely the width of the trailer.

We've got a fire up here,
nowhere to turn around.

Consequences are deadly.

The hill goes inside, there's sh*t inside.

Then you're oversize, it's got to cope
everyone else, it's switched on as well.

He doesn't give a f*ck, he's coming in hot.

We'll get these knocked out quick.

We're grabbing a crusher, a
screen, and a 36 ton digger.

Fair bit of money in all the gear.

A little over $2 million, so
we're just going to make sure we

do the right thing and look
after the customer's equipment.

26-year-old Mason Parkey and his team

have a heavy haulage
convoy of three trucks to

load and prepare for the
brutal roads of Cape York.

Hey, Mason, that machine's 2-7.

Yeah, so we'll be three metres,
so I should've gotten up out of that.

As team leader, Mason carries
the weight of responsibility,

including supervising team
member and father Colin.

Hey, Doug.

Second and third from
the rear, both down yet.

I'm travelling with Mason, my
second oldest son in Woody.

Mason's definitely in charge on this
job, he's running the show for sure.

I'm going to go back a little,
just back to some money.

I'm not going to call myself an expert,
but I've got pretty good knowledge

of the roads up here and
the trek way to drive them.

That's sort of why I've been
given the job of leading the pack.

Although Mason is in
charge of this operation,

it's about as good
as it's going to go.

Colin owns the company.

We kicked off the business
20 years ago, started off

in towing, and then we
just progressed from there.

Maybe Hallwich come
into play just because

of my sons, so we're
just going to business.

Mason does anything on the dirt,
and he does anything heavy Hallwich.

It's horrible today.

It's muggy, it's hot.

It's sweating, it's only 7am.

We've only really got
a small window to get in

and out of weeper, mainly
because of the weather.

If it gets wet up here, they close roads.

We've got about a three-day
window max, I'm thinking.

After loading the mining machinery, the
team must race the oncoming wet season,

crossing the rutted and
corrugated dirt roads of

Cape York before monsoon
rain makes them impassable,

delivering the multi-million dollar
load to a business in Mossmouth.

We're in quarrying, mainly
quarrying, and small-scale mining.

Wet season, you know,
can last up to six months,

so we don't want that
gear stuck up there.

It's definitely better to be
able to do the maintenance on

it over the wet season, so
it's ready to go for the next dry.

What have you been with us
for going on seven years now?

Just a bit lower with the back, so I built
a bit of a ramp for it, easy to get up.

It started just after me, and
he sort of worked his way up.

Mason's overheating at the moment,
so we've got to try and be quick.

To cut the 100 tons of equipment,
they're using three company trucks.

I don't even know where to start,
because there's a dream truck.

Heavy spec, six-road suspension
slip in front end, planetary diffs.

Yeah, it's a big girl.

It's a little bit too pretty to come up
here, but it's a spec the right way for it.

As owner of the company, Colin had
to sign the check for the $700,000 truck.

Pretty surprising, actually.

I never thought he'd say, "Yes, they're
letting us order one of these trucks.

" I'm going to pick a
slide. There you go.

That's why I got the pick on the bonnet.

I bought Mason this 509 Cuge investment.

We're mindful of that.
We've got to look after our own equipment,

but the customer's
stuff's on the back as well,

and definitely don't want to be
damaging the customer's equipment.

Reputation is probably
my major focus these days.

We've got customers
that we've had for 20 years.

It's been a mile creek bypass by three.

Just up ahead, I've got a bridge
there, but it's only a 25-ton load limit.

We're obviously a bit heavy in that, so
we're going to have to take the bypass.

It's a bypass, Cape York-style.

To avoid a rickety wooden bridge,

Mason needs to lead the team down
an alternative track through the riverbed.

I'll let you know when I've cleared it.

I'll just get you to stay up
sort of at this top corner.

I don't want to be cleaning the
machine up on any of these branches.

Keeps us going, setting up the truck,
and, yeah, getting ready for a load.

Contracting company owner,
Liam O'Connor, is under pressure

to complete a heavy,
high-stakes trucking job.

A lot of the equipment that we
deliver is expensive equipment.

There's a lot of money
involved in the delivery

process alone, so, yeah,
you have to be on your game.

Trucking is never easy.

The trucks have to be raw and five to six
days a week, at least, to make any money.

The job is taking two 60-ton
articulated dump trucks,

brand new trucks, or
over 1.2 million a piece

from Perth, all the way
to Telfergo, on mine.

It's a brutal journey of 1,715
kilometres to Marble Bar,

Australia's hottest town, and then
another 400 kilometres of rough dirt

to deliver $2.4 million
worth of dump trucks,

desperately needed
at a mine in Telfer.

We've got 400 kilometres
of arugated dirt road.

We've got to make sure that
we stay on the road and get there.

The plane has waned for these
trucks for the past couple of weeks.

It's a part of the weekend on
the road and get them delivered.

There. Where's the case?

Ah, there's the case.

Here under the bunk.

With millions of dollars on the line,
Liam's gambling on an all-island tame.

Putting newly-arrived Irish compatriot,

Keith Flynn, behind the
wheel of the second truck.

We've got one of our newest
truck drivers, Sam, is Keith.

This is going to be his first big Lord.
Definitely a bit of a challenge for him.

I didn't start up with a Lord as
big as this, that's all I can say.

A little bit nervous, yeah, there's
a lot bigger than what I'm used to.

It's really up here, we're
gonna do this kind of stuff.

It's just going to go by very fast.

We just checked the weights
and the drives, so we're 22 tonne.

We're about, yeah, four tonne over weight.

Legally, you're only allowed
18 tonne on your drive accidents.

So we've got to try and
transfer some weight backwards.

Whoa!

We're still two tonne over.

We've got to come up
on another plant and see

what we can do just to
get two tonne after drives.

What about if we pull
the turntable forward?

Adjusting the gooseneck hitch
position on the $1 million trailer can

vary the proportion of load
weight on the truck's drive-ax horse.

We're getting places. We're
taking the turntable out of our

forward, we've just gotten
down to our 18 tonne, so yeah.

Care to pack it up now, get our
chain down and we should be right.

We need to get the rod by nine,
yeah, so we're cutting the tight now.

Our pilot is just the right, so yeah.

We don't want to delay him.

Cutting it a bit tight now, it's going to
be that after nine with delays and stuff.

Pilot's very parked, everyone
needs to know what's happening.

It's just catching the rain
now, unavoidable unfortunately.

It's Ireland every day, yeah.

It's three hundred and forty days a year.

Rain in the city is never
good because, well, you see

brake lights everywhere,
so stuff starts to happen.

You can brake as fast
as you want, but it doesn't

stop very fast with a
lot of waves, you know?

I'm a piece of metal in the rod.

It's part of the truck.

The damaged airlines, tires, everything.

Yeah, this was about the day.

Let's give the chains a bit of a bang.

Make sure everything's
seated in because, if you

don't, it'll come loose,
going down the road.

We've picked up some tippers
we've ordered a while back.

Cartage business owner and
trucker Rex Riles has just laid

down hundreds of thousands
of dollars on new equipment.

They're a roll press side tipper,
very well designed, and we're

taking them down to Laverton, and
we're going to work out and desert.

The brand new trailers allow
cargo to be dumped by tilting the

trailer body to one side, perfect
for unloading gravel and sand.

They're another big investment
for Rex and his business.

Oh, look, there's 120 grand to 145.

150. Rex has always got his
custom stuff, which is great.

Well, you get off on nice gear.

It's not just the shiny custom-built
trailers that turn Rex on.

He's brought one of his
favourite trucks to haul them home.

The Marlin, it was built in Galen, Texas
in 1995, and then they picked it up 1997.

The ultra-rare Marlin truck
is one of only 22 brought

to Australia, and just 20
are still actively working.

It's on its third motor, a 550
horsepower, 15 litre, six-cylinder diesel.

I've been in the desert, done
a lot of work. It's been a good,

all-on-a-style truck, and
I'm quite fond of it, actually.

It's going to be a lot of challenges, rough
roads, problems with tyres and bearings.

From the trailer
manufacturers in Darwin,

Rex has almost 2,000
kilometres ahead of him,

via Alice Springs and
Uluru, before hitting the rough

dirt of the Great Central
Road for over 1,000 kilometres.

To reach his hometown,
the tiny community of

Laverton, on the edge of
the Great Victoria Desert.

Rex's business, Desert
Sands, is based there.

It started Desert Sands in '89.

They had either just been there or
whatever we needed to do to keep the

little business going, so at the
moment, cutting water for the concrete.

It makes me a couple of jobs to be sprouting
on me, so to try and work in for that.

While Rex is under pressure to get
back to Laverton and keep the dollars

coming in for his business, he also
has another equally important deadline.

Trying to get back to the races
that are on the Sunday and make

sure that the tracks are all right
for it before the horses turn up.

Held only once a year, the
Laverton horse races is an

event of massive importance
to the local community.

Rex has committed to preparing
the track to make it safe for racing.

They don't know as much as we can.

They'll try and make sure that the
community's getting the support they need.

I've got a few people who aren't what
know where I am and when I'm getting back.

The imperative of getting
back there is on time.

We're trying for three ways.
That's where we want to be tonight.

So I want to try and get in
there on the reasonable hour.

Still over 600 kilometres away,
the three ways Roadhouse is Rex's

first planned stop, before continuing
towards Alice Springs tomorrow.

We've got plenty of fuel
going and we venture out.

From Alice Springs, we'll fill
everything up in there for the desert.

We'll see how we go out there.

I don't know what the f*ck I believe.

Fuel guys decide to sh*t themselves.

Hopefully they don't have
fuel to get us for the three ways.

Try and pick their own line.

Sitting in the table drains
is a bit of a rescue one.

It's a bit softer, a bit
more shit sitting down any.

We've got about 36 tons
sitting behind us now,

and we're more likely to catch some of
the stuff that you don't want to drive on.

Potential of rolling
there, or load shifting.

But, can save you a shitload of time.

into a three-day journey,

delivering over $2 million worth
of dump trucks into the Pilbara,

Liam O'Connor faces
the possibility of serious

damage to his seriously
expensive dry life.

and thousands very quickly

on any kind of a breakdown
with these trucks and trailers.

Everything looks in order, yeah.

Taking key to one of our newest
truckies forced a big load for him.

We've only had the latest couple of months,
so it's the first time I've been over.

A big truck with us and big load.

We have two or four minutes here, mate.

This is coming past April 11th.

Sounds like there's some
kind of an accident up ahead.

This is serious shit.

It doesn't sound like anybody's
horse, so it's the good news.

And now we're aiming to get
to magnet before sundown.

We're cutting the tights.

It's very important that
we keep our schedule.

It's still almost 500 kilometres to their
first overnight stop at Mount Magnet.

We have to be after all by
sundown in a reasonable tarking area.

We can only travel in the daylight
hours with these oversized loads.

We've still got two to three hours from
our destination, but one small misjudgment

and yeah, things get
really messy real quick.

We've got some cats up ahead
and they can't even do anything.

The old guys decided to
shut our shell out, mate.

We've got a few guys playing up
here, if they don't know what's going on.

We're going to drop
bait down here, just have

a bit of a walk around
and check everything.

Now we're hoping to do enough
fuel to get us for the three ways.

That's where we want to bait tonight.

That's hot.

Check the fuel or the tank.

Do a little bit of fashion, mate.

We could say there aren't shorties
if you've got a little bit of fuel.

It's quite a relief.

Do the marking so we can keep it on it.

Go around the other side, do the same.

For some reason, the wires come off.

We've got plenty of fuel.

And it was just the wires that come
off at the top of the gauge indicator.

So we're right.

We're going to have to keep moving.

On a mission to pull a triple trailer load
through the harsh arid centre of Australia,

Rex's 30-year-old hand-built Marmon
prime mover is testing his trucking skills.

It was down below zero before now.

It's actually just under half the tanks.

So we're back in business there.

Rex's reputation in his
hometown, Laverton, is on the line.

He must complete over
3,000 kilometres through

the brutally hot
desert in just four days

to get back in time for
an important commitment.

We've got race horses
running around down there.

So we just want to make sure
that they're running on good ground.

Relationships are the
community I regard very seriously.

I believe investing in the town to help
build your town and get everybody on board.

It was about 40 out there as well.

This time of the year is always challenging
because wheel bearings run high.

The truck runs high, the diffs run high.

It's a risk of breakdowns.

It's a little bit warped.

So yeah, sort of backed it off a bit.

That's up.

Yeah, we've got a bit of heat in the diffs.

The diff, or
diff-erential, redirects the

truck's power from the
engine to the wheels,

replacing a diff can take days
and cost thousands of dollars.

Yeah, it's supposed to be
about 80/85, but it's a bit hard.

It wasn't happens as the diff heats up.

It's too hard. They could fail.

That was a stray coal.

We want to run our aircrafts,
we're hot in front of us.

Well, it's not fun, yeah.
You'd have to be watching them.

Irishman Liam O'Connor
is feeling the outback heat.

He has less than an hour to get to
his first overnight stop at Mount Magnet,

or risk missing his
critical delivery deadline.

These trucks are north of one million each.

It's been some bit of kit.

Operators are on sideways,
costing the client money,

and, yeah, we're losing money
when they're sitting on a trailer as well.

So, yeah, there's a bit of pressure
to get these trucks delivered.

Just here in time was a late start,
so it's not a bad finish to a day.

Have a bit ease and maybe a few Guinness.

If you want to start getting
harder as we move up along,

so, yeah, we'll be heading
on for Mount Magnet.

More than 900 kilometres further north,
Marble Bar is Australia's hottest town,

where temperatures have been
known to exceed 50 degrees.

It's a long way from the green,
green grass of Liam's home.

I left Ireland in February 2012, but
came here and set up my own company.

Nothing and other doors.

Yeah, it's just been a
constant battle, I guess.

I drive the truck because I enjoy it.

It's up new to me.

It's up and I wouldn't have done back on.

We'll be travelling through the
edge of Caragini National Park.

It's a pretty impressive sight.

As we come to the top
of the steep declines,

we would have to get our gear
selected and take it all the way down.

Fifth should be our gear, I reckon.

Keep it up.

It's definitely been a bit
of a challenge for a teat.

A little bit nervous.

This truck's over 45
times empty, so it'll be

a lot of weight, so it'll
push on its own hood.

It's the main thing, it's
just watching tires blow out.

we're over the worst of it.

Just got through the
Caragini National Park.

It's a lovely place to drive through.

Getting thoughts out of
the dirt road to Maverick Bar.

We're just going to ride down.

If you pick the wrong gear on this hill,

you've gone straight
down the side of that cliff.

When you're oversize, just got to give
everybody else as much room as possible

and then hope everyone
else has switched on as well.

Yeah, we've got a bit of heat in there.

It's supposed to be about 80, 80, 85,
but it's harder than what they should be.

What happens is the diffs
he heats up and it gets too hot.

A bigger fail, if that happens,
we're in a spot of boiler.

Just backed that off, yeah, 1500 revs,
and it's got a bit of a down hill coast.

Temperous drop-macked, so it's
backed where it should be, so happy days.

Rex Riles is pushing his rare
30-year-old Marmon truck to its limit,

hauling his brand-new $150,000 bespoke
trailers in a desperate race to get back home,

in time to fulfill a commitment
to his hometown community.

I've got to get back for the race track
