This time, on Outback Truckers.

And there it is in front of
me, the 1,000 K and Red Dust.

Every day on the road
is the role of the Dyson.

I can see a fair bit of
water laying on the road.

This is bloody scary.

But rains, it turns into a cosmon.

We're going across the Nullabore.

This will be very, very tight.

Pay attention to the sun, pay attention.

There's going to be a problem.

If we find someone now,
we might have opportunity.

Better than it's what
I'd call a make or break.

You need to make an up for
you, break something going up.

If a gas power comes over
to the side, it could explode.

This is what the Nullabore has held.

So how'd you go, slick?

You got about two inches
into between each week.

Shit, they're close, don't they?

When we get out in the dirt,
things are rocking and rolling.

No, I think we should be right.

72-year-old Steve Graham and
his subcontractor, Slick Serafini

are using every available inch of
trailer space to load valuable cargo.

We've got some second-hand
mining gear on the front trailer.

But this trailer, here's what worries me.

He's a very good customer in Perth
and he's bought some good cars.

He doesn't want them scratched.

You can't handle crease
in this job, get out of it.

What we've got in front of
us is about 2,700 kilometres,

and I've got 1,100 kilometres
of dirt in there, I've desert.

From Alice Springs, Steve will haul
the 60-ton loaded rig past all the road,

before hitting the Great Central Road,
over 1,000 kilometres of ragged dirt,

crossing into Western Australia,
and then onto his destination.

Perth.

It's ominous, the sky like this is not
good when you're heading out with the dirt.

If it rains, there's no bitumen out there.

It turns into a fog mine.

And it did rain all yesterday.

People in Alice Springs
are saying, "Don't go.

The road will be closed.

" If the Great Central
Road is closed,

the alternative route would
add over 600 kilometres,

an extra day and over
$1,000 in diesel to his journey.

The gamble is, you're then
in the hands of the weather.

Sometimes we might lose money on a load.

So, I'm going to get going.

I do like this new motor.

It's settling in now, it's freed up a lot.

I'm driving it a bit harder
than what it was before.

Over a year ago, Steve
invested almost $200,000,

installing a new motor in his
30-year-old Kenworth C501.

600 horsepower in here, 2,050 foot-pounder
torque and better fuel economy.

To claw back some of his huge investment,
Steve needs to make money on this run,

delivering his load on time
and in pristine condition.

You've got to get the gear to
the other end without damage.

You can see people don't want to play here.

If I get no problems, it'll
be with these bloody cars.

I've only got 50 mil between
some of those bumpers.

Here we go, we've got rain on the windscreen,
and we've got water walled race guys.

Those clouds are getting fatter and fuller.

It's starting to look quite ominous.

My gut feeling about
this is not good at all.

This is the sort of rain that
hangs around for a couple of days.

That's when you get road
closures and/or get involved.

This is bloody scary. I can see a
fair bit of water laying on the road.

If it's been raining out there on the
dirt, it just turns to gutless red mud.

This is not good. This is not good at all.

I'll just go up and throw this in.

Getting me warm warning, working out again.

My wife wants me to go to the gym.
Why do I need to go to a gym?

67-year-old Jim Foodie is on a mission
to haul vital supplies to his home town,

Bamaga, on the
northernmost tip of Australia.

We have big ticket items and
important items that are bulk,

but so is the little stuff
important to whoever is sending it.

We take anything.

All of this stuff is going to Bamaga because
you can see my high legs is a bit full.

Here we always deal with Jim to take
transport our stuff up back and forth.

It's a time-critical job as the
approaching tropical wet season

will bring cyclones and
extreme monsoonal rain.

It just gets completely cut off
by road during the wet season.

The road may be out
of action for five months.

This is level two in Tetris.

Foodie is filling up
the first of three trailers

with mixed flammable
gas already loaded.

We need to have about 50 pallets of gas

to be able to carry the communities
up there through the wet season.

If we don't, then it really comes down
to people just having no gas for cooking.

Hospital also, they rely
on us heavily for gas.

The cages that hold the gas are
not designed to go up those roads,

so they come apart sometimes
on the road up to Bamaga.

Foodie's 1,000 kilometre journey starts
at Cairns, hauling one trailer to Mariba,

adding a second and then crossing a
steep pass for a third trailer at Lakeland.

After that, he takes on Cape York,
fighting through winding ranges

and bone rattling dirt roads
to his destination, Bamaga.

Accessed only by a ferry that
shuts down at 5pm every day.

A lot of transport operators just go up,
do one trip and never come back again.

They reckon the roads
are too rough, they don't

want the ferry, so they
just don't want to do it.

Well, if someone's
going to do it, that's us.

So we're heading up to Mariba.

We need to be up the mountain and
then hooking up trails about daylight.

Around a range is notoriously
very narrow winding road,

so it's a bit of a handful you
really need to keep your wits about.

Right now, we're going through a
pretty bad, bad batch of home here.

And it can be greasy and wet when
it rains, so it's not be taken lightly.

We're about to reach the road
train pad where our trailer of dollar is.

Somehow I'm going
to do a little tight

maneuver, a bit hard to
see when we're doing it.

There's not going to be a few of these
posts there, if we cancel something to do.

We're good to go.

This is a 1997 Western Star constellation,
the 600 horsepower, 18 speed gearbox.

We've got 80 plus tons
on here, you can feel it.

Actually, it should work a little bit.

We're going to start heading
up the D'Azalee range.

Part of the great dividing
range, the Passover

D'Azalee range rises 120
metres in just two kilometres.

A challenge for any car, let alone a
27-year-old truck pulling over 80 tons.

It's what I call a make
or break either, make

it up for you, and break
something going up.

We'll see some high temperatures in the
Kim and high temperature in the gearbox.

Back into low range, I'm going
to go right back to the third here.

This is our steepest
little hitch right here.

Now, if it's heating up.

The diff, or differential, transfers
the power of the engine to the wheels.

If it overheats, it could
seize, bringing the truck to

a grinding hot, requiring
repairs that could take weeks.

We're starting to warm
up a bit, I'm going to

have to go for another
gear in a normal hurry.

Yes, we are going hot, so here we go.

But how are you doing that?

We've got temperature cells
everywhere at the moment.

We just gave them fingers crossed.

The ramps are shorter
than the trailer, Jesse.

east will take in through

1,200 kilometres of the
punishing Nullibore play.

Across South Australia
and finally into Victoria, a

journey of almost 3,000
kilometres across the continent.

This truck is the 90-pilot
model Kenworth T900.

TJ is in it.

Just had a major service
done on it there last week.

It looks a bit old
and a bit rough, a bit

like me, but underneath
all strong and solid.

Yogi recently forked out
$55,000 on a new engine for PJ.

Cash he desperately needs
to regain through transport jobs.

If it moves, it needs maintenance.

And that costs money.

Now, my number one goal is to have
these two machines arrive on farm.

Unscratched, unmarked,
undamaged in a macular condition.

Because it's my pride, my reputation.

Everything's on the line
about how we deliver.

We hope tonight we'll leave
it sun up in the morning.

Australia, they're long-term farmers.

So if I can build a relationship
with their family, I can build,

you know, Lucy can build a
relationship with their children.

If Lucy decided to take it over, it might
be the proudest dad in the world, you know?

In Central Australia, Steve
Graham is gambling on a

quicker journey using dirt
roads through the desert.

But heavy rain could
make the route impassable.

We have had some big hold-ups down here.

Sometimes we lose money on the
load because we're stuck for days.

We have to recoup that.

We've just turned on
to the last in a highway

now, so I get to drive
out past the rock, Uluru.

But having a look here, there's the information
for me in black and white and green.

The roads are open.

That's where we're going,
straight into that man to cloud.

And it looks like it's rain out there.

You know, I can make the biggest
plans of the world and the outback.

And this country here will
decide what's going on to my boat.

I'll take what it dishes out.

And there it is in front of me, red dust.

This is a thousand K a
dirt from here to live it.

Oh, there we go, corrugations, straight up.

I've only got 40 mil between two cars.

I don't want the
corrugations to loosen straps

and snap chains and wreck
the cars down the back.

You can see people don't want to play it.

Looks like the cloud's gone.

There's a sign that I'm
happy to see, greater ahead.

The difference already is the
quietness, the rattling's gone.

Graded roads are a wonderful thing.

Good to be able to run
the dips at a decent run.

I enjoy this side as a dog.

There's a bit of a ride
through the switchback.

It's like men at the Royal Show.

These feral camels, if they get panicked,
they're straight out in front of the truck.

And I don't want to be hitting any
wild camels, certainly damage them.

And it doesn't do much good for the truck.

I'd have to say it's a
pretty good day today.

And this will do me for tonight.

We've done probably 600
kilometres on some pretty shabby dirt.

I don't know how I'll go
getting a good nice rest in here.

It's a bloody traffic jam.
Look at them all.

Tomorrow I've still got a bit
under 500k a dirt to get off this road.

We've picked up a big
mob of traffic and the

downside is they're
all wrecking the road.

So where I've had a
really good run today, I'm

expecting to have a
big slow down tomorrow.

And the road, which was
beautiful, has just gone downhill.

Every day on a dirt repeat
is the role of the dice.

The way we're going on this road
now, I doubt, we'll get off it tonight.

And that costs money.

You've got to get the gear to
the other end without damage.

And you've got to try
and get it there on time.

The schedule's blown out the gate.
There is no longer a schedule.

There's no longer a reliable time.

It's just dreadful.

This will be very, very tight.

Getting there on time is
what you want, but a load.

Getting there in one piece is a
much more important problem.

across the vast Australian continent.

" I've been home for three
days, it's Christmas time.

I don't know how much into the year.
I've worked a lot in balance.

It's very difficult to get right.

But I've got a very, very,
very understanding family.

It's time to go in there and it's
time for me to get out of here.

Something goes wrong out
here to bring the mechanic out.

500 kilometres of fixed the problem.

It's going to cost me
time and days of money.

A couple of big showers have come
through last night, a bit of a storm.

The rain is a bit of a problem
because the shoulders get a bit wet.

And then we've come into the
narrow section of 90 miles straight.

Not a lot of room to move if
you've seen other other signs.

They say we got four metres.

All right, you are
about to find you a spot.

We don't want to be near any
of the edges when it's wet, Eddie.

Today is one of the dearest
days if something goes wrong.

The edges are soft.

We don't want to give up.

We are going hot.

I'm going to have to go for
another gear in an awful hurry.

We made it.

We asked you to hold it in the seat.

I can tell you I don't want
to go through that again.

Because if we stopped on any of those,

well, we're breaking up a
road train to get out of it.

And I really don't want to do that.

You don't want anything going wrong here.

We've got about 85 tonne pushing
us down, a pretty steep incline.

There's no safety vents in this place.

You're just down straight into a rock face.

So if it gets away on
your hair, major chances

are survival are
absolutely bugger all.

Foodie is giving his 27-year-old truck
a workout on the Great Dividing Range,

desperate to get
his life-saving load to

communities on the
northernmost tip of Australia.

When it's wet season up
here, the trucks just stop.

All the heavy items.

They're too expensive to ship.

We have to get everything there.

Here we are coming in.

I've got to do a bit of work in here.
I can slow.

So we've got to drop and pick up
trailers and shut up a few things.

Foodie has another hefty 45 tonne
cement trailer to hook up, creating a 53.

5 metre long triple road train.

We're just playing musical
trailers at the moment.

Well, that's the final part of the puzzle.

We're rolling with 130 tonne.

In now, we're on the
limit as far as length goes.

We can't be any heavier.

From here, about 700 cows into Bemiga.

We're coming up on a Hell's
Guide, but it's a crazy place.

Ahead, the notorious Hell's Gate Pass.

Foodie needs enough speed to
pull 130 tonnes up the steep incline.

But too much, and he risks driving straight
through the tight turns at the time.

You're actually going uphill, breaking.

We're going to thunder and we're
giving her everything she's got.

We've got 10% grade, reduced speed.

Look at that corner there.

We've just got to judge this corner right.

Ten days ago, I was
doing 60 kilometres now.

I'm struggling to get 20.

You can't go fast.

After laying down almost
$200,000 on a new engine install,

Steve is under pressure to
pay it off with profitable jobs.

But deep, rutted
corrugations on the brutal

Great Central Road have
slowed him to a crawl.

That means my delivery time goes
out, my schedule goes backwards.

And that costs money.

I can't give my customers
an estimated time for arrival.

I would be foolish to grab that
satellite phone and suggest,

"Look, I'll be there
tomorrow. I don't know that.

" This will get there
while we get there.

In a punishing 11-hour
day, Steve has travelled

less than 500 kilometres
on severe corrugations.

But the end is in sight.

About 500 metres from here is the bitumen.

And by a year after today, I
will be happy to see this stuff.

We're going to knock off, light a
fire, cook a feed, and go to bed.

And then you're going

There we are, Mamago, 324 kilometers to go.

Well, my name today is Make the Dam
Ferry before it closes down for the day.

To have any chance of making his deadline,

Foodie must cross the
Jardin River, almost 300

kilometers away, before
the ferry shuts at 5 p.m.

We're also anxious eyes on
the fuel gauge here at Parliament.

We've chewed about three corners of our
400 odd liters that we were in the tank.

There's no end of my
fuel up in, a beer on end.

[MUSIC]

Hidden corrugations all over the place.

[MUSIC]

Very, very severe corrugation.

[MUSIC]

The tankers that hold the gas
come apart sometimes could explode.

[MUSIC]

We can't do much more than
just waddle our way through them.

[MUSIC]

We're about two cays an hour at the moment.

We're putting our delivery
schedule in jeopardy.

This is basically what
is locally known as hell.

[MUSIC]

I've got a puncture right there.

If I change it now, then I don't
have a tyre for the long weekend.

[MUSIC]

Unfortunately, our cooldown
partner now is determined.

[MUSIC]

A dangerous puncture on his truck's drive
tyre has Yogi scrambling to get a repair,

or risk changing it,
leaving him without a spare.

I have a spare trailer tyre, but
I don't have a spare truck tyre.

He still has more than 800
kilometres in front of him,

on his mission to deliver
two high-tech crop sprayers.

I'll span two feet.

An hour and a half, hour
that we've been stuck here.

Well, I have no spare truck tyres left,
so I've taken the risk to get the reward.

If something goes wrong, we
will have to wait for a call out.

going so slow, everyone

This guy can just do it around the clock.
