Car recyclers Mike Elliott
and his 17-year-old son Vinnie

are working fast, extracting
cash from an Outback relic.

The only thing that's worth any
money is the engine, transmission.

The rest of the car is absolutely rooted.

That engine, that gearbox,
will be used in another car.

We only take the good components, and
then the rest of it is for metal recycling.

We've been out here for 10 days.

It's been bloody hard.

The pair have done a deal with the
citizens of the tiny town of Bilaluna

in far northwestern Australia to
buy and recycle their car wrecks.

We quiet all their scrap cars,
and we clean everything up,

so it's a win-win for
everyone, to be honest.

That's 120 cars now on here, or engines,
gearboxes, diffs, that sort of stuff.

Definitely doubled up money.

We outlaid 40 grand,
and what it's looking like

is there's about 80 grams
worth of stock on board.

Perfect!

That's it.

We're going to strap up.

We're going to get out
of the town of my desert,

and we're heading straight
back to Perth, 3,000 kilometres.

To get paid, the
father-son team must haul

their fully loaded rig,
almost 200 kilometres,

along the notorious Tanami
Dirt Road, to the highway near

Hall's Creek, then travel
over 2,500 kilometres to Perth.

We've kind of left it a
little bit too late in the year.

They're forecasting
300 mil for this weekend.

You know, 300 mils of
rain means that this whole

area will probably
be about a foot high in

water, and that means
no truck is going to move.

No trailer is going to move.

It's going to be absolute
chaos for at least four months.

You ready?

We cannot afford to be renting
trailers here for four months.

Truck repayments, that sort of stuff.

That's ridiculous.

The weather is no joke, really.

You know, there are people
evacuating from the community as we talk.

I'm watching cars go down the bloody road
right now, and we shall be joining them.

The problem is we're hauling 140
ton right now with 3 max trailers.

The more weight, the more stress
attraction could be a major issue.

This dust, when you mix it with water,

it becomes literally like someone's
just poured grease all over the road.

So your truck starts
fish-tailing down the road.

Now what we're going to do is
load our crane truck on our drop deck,

and we're going to set up the
road train, and we're going to roll.

One of my mates dropped off my scanning
crane truck for me out here a week ago.

It's a big truck, it's a
heavy truck, it's an old truck.

This thing is just a nightmare.

Every time we load it, it's
just an absolute nightmare.

Right now, I'm stressing
about getting this thing on board.

Because it's such a low
truck, we're using extra

rails here as a better
leverage to get more clearance.

I put on driving clothes today,
and this is one of my good talks,

so I don't want to get dirty, I
wasn't planning paying with grease.

Just done a wheel bearing on the trial of
this, so we're just doing a new hub on it.

Hopefully we've got some
seals and bearings to go into it.

Anthony and Daniel
Haig are rushing to make

essential truck repairs in
remote Northern Australia.

We are in the middle
of the desert on this

multi-million acre property,
Barkley down station.

The Haigs make money finding water
on massive out-back cattle stations.

We drill water bores for grill
remote cattle stations for stock.

It could be for the
homesteads that pretty much

go to the places that
nobody else wants to go.

We are a few days behind now
because of these breakdowns.

Fingers crossed, nothing
else goes through all.

Just finished our wheel bearings
in that ear, packed up, ready to go.

Leed barking down, had up a mongy mongy.

I think we've got about 80, 90 Ks of dirt.

The Haigs have just completed a
water drilling job at Barkley down station,

and now we'll travel north,
almost 1,000 kilometres,

before leaving the
highway and hitting the dirt,

to reach their next job at
a mongy mongy station.

I have heard it's a bit sandy up there,

so I'm fingers crossed
they're not getting bald.

The roads that we drive on, they're not
your typical road-trained fishermen roads.

They're roads that are made for all drives.

So we've had a few hiccups this last
week, so it'll be good to get out there

and start working again,
earning some money.

Such a tight squeeze out of here.

To get the job done, they
need two triple road trains.

Anthony is pulling what's known
as a BA triple, 44 metres long.

Danielle's rig is a
full A triple road train,

almost 10 metres
longer than Anthony's.

Loaded with drilling equipment,
they're mobile home and supplies,

the mega rigs are
essential for their business,

and their dream of
paying down all their debts.

Drilling, it's our main
source of income like

the boat, but we have
recently acquired a farm.

They'll outback right away.

The farm's still in development stages.

Over three years ago, Anthony
and Danielle took a massive gamble,

taking out millions of dollars in loans
to develop a run-down outback farm.

When we first bought it, you know,
obviously we had to pay it back,

so we'd develop a need up, pay get into
a home and pay get successful as well.

We've got two boys, they're a
bit of a challenge having them.

We have Pete, who's 10, and Theo,
who's five now, and a governess Katie.

How are you going towards your Katie?

You know, the pressure's on, we've lost
a couple of days, with all this breakdowns.

These guys are not
only a new flight, but, you

know, if we don't hit
water, that's less money.

It's our reputation, so we kind of
really want to just hurry up and get there,

and, um, get the job done so we
can put some money in the bank.

We are just coming into Calwell.

It's a tiny, cute little
town on the Northern

Territory Queensland
border, just a servo and a pub.

Every year when we
come here I'll freak out.

It's a really tight fort for a road train.

We're going to wait on
coming traffic because you

have to go right out on
the other side on a highway.

loading here in Wagner's

yard with two heavy
isotators, a cement patter.

A 67-year-old Jim Foodie
has a FD payload to deliver.

That was sort of doing a
bit of watching here and

trying to see if we could
stop at the right place.

A double trailer load
of weighty cement

powder transported
in cylindrical isotainers.

Well, I don't know if we get
this thing on the road, I suppose.

With these trailers on, we're
now sitting around about our

legal weight for a double
road train, which is 80-odd ton.

The hole in North Queensland is
going mad, building at the moment.

Because everybody's trying
to get things done before

the wet season starts to
set in again, why we go?

What we're doing with them
is taking them up to Mariva

first and then we rake it
up and then move it around.

Probably pick up a third trailer.

Because of road train
regulations, Foodie will

be forced to take the
back way from Townsville,

pulling the 50-ton load through
a challenging stretch of narrow

bitumen and rough dirt roads to
reach his first destination at Mariva.

He'll drop one trailer then, before
pushing on to Lakeland, where he'll swap

the second cement trailer for another
loaded trailer to bring back to Cairns.

We've got a pretty arabulous day
in front of us, time-wise, we've got

a lot of lot to do, precious on to
get into catch tomorrow morning.

Otherwise, they don't work on the weekend,
so we're there two days late, everywhere.

Foodie's next job starts
in Cairns tomorrow.

If he misses his deadline,
he'll lose two days of income,

while he waits for the depot
to open again on Monday.

Ideally, we need to be
holding the road early Saturday

morning at the latest to make
all our time commitments.

If the world's earning,
we ain't earning it.

It's not just cash
Foodie could miss out on.

He has another commitment tomorrow,
one more important than money.

My daughter, Teresa, is graduating
year 12 at Teens High School.

family things went on the road all

the time, but I have orders
strutting for my other two girls.

Star 4900 series possible agent.

With over 1,000 challenging
kilometres to do in less than 24

hours, Foodie is putting all his
faith into his aging Western Star.

It has a 15-litre, six-cylinder
turbo diesel motor,

and almost two million
kilometres on the clock.

The yard is an ugly out thing, and I
just say out what seat speed is that?

Just up here a little bit further, we'll
actually be turning on the Utan Road.

Now the Utan Road, it tends to be rough.

It's a bush road, a bit of an handful.

Hands the dirt.

The boost pressure's gone.

It's the turbo pressure that
generates the boost for the engine.

Without the extra power
created by the turbo,

Jim has no chance of
pulling his heavy load.

We don't need that.

We have to travel at such a slow rate, and
the more chance it is, we're going to rain.

The problem with that is getting bogged.

Being stuck somewhere means
that no one's making money.

trailer regos, and none of us getting paid.

We got oil pressure warning law.

If we're traveling with 140
tons of blown oil pressure,

it means that we've got
to rule the $60,000 engine.

That basically means that this
thing's not getting off the tanner line.

ounce of her trucking skills

to thread her 53 and a half meter
long rig through a tight corner.

This pulls on a little
bit longer than anything.

A malfunctioning turbo has
Jim Foodie feeling the heat.

He has less than 24 hours
to complete his mission

and get back to cans,

The pressure's really on to people
world-turning, just to keep the cash flowing.

That's just measuring the boost pressure.

We've got a lot of boost
pressure coming out there.

Rough roads and things, that's all that is.

Whatever reason it seems to want
to come out, so we'll try and hold it in.

Well, we stopped there
for 10 minutes to fix that.

minutes if we weren't up the road.

We are very limited at the time.

It's 4pm. Foodie still has
another 150 bone jarring

kilometres to get to his
first drop-off at Mariba,

and then almost 200
kilometres after that, to Lakeland.

Guess that we're probably about
an hour and a half out of Mariba.

We don't have too many
more little hiccups and stuff.

We can just get higher agation if we can.

We've taken it from out of bit.

Good thing is, we are deli through
the dirt, which is not very bad or empty.

Jim's fight to get back on
schedule is not just about money.

It's personal.

I denied my daughter's a raise.

Graduates from year 12.

And I'm on an absolute
order that I have to be then.

We're just coming into the edge of Mariba.

We're going to drop the
rear trailer off and then I'm

going to take the lead
trailer of dolly up to Lakeland.

The two trailers on Jim's
36 and a half metre road

train are connected with
what's known as a dolly.

A separate hitch with its own wheels.

The two who barfed the dolly won't release.

I'm not sure why that's happening.
We've wriggled and jiggled a bit.

Which means a delay in getting the cans.

That's just me not.

I'm not moving at all.

I think our luck is running out.

What the f*ck is going on there?

The oil pressure warning law is
saying that it's losing oil pressure.

If we're travelling with 140
tonnes with low oil pressure,

it means that we're going
to ruin the $60,000 engine.

Loaded with salvaged car parts worth up to
$80,000 on the export market, Mike and Vinny

are fighting to get out of the Tanomai
Desert before a fierce tropical storm breaks.

There's big rain coming and
we are live trying to get out of

here because big rain coming
means we stay here for months.

We're going to try and find
oil pressure sensor and see

if it is low oil pressure
or if it's a sensor issue.

I got a couple of sensors going in the
block into the water pump and stuff here.

We're really hoping that
dirty girls got a lot of sensors

hooked up for it so far she
hasn't been wrong with anything.

It looks like these are our oil pressure
sensors going straight into the block.

There's going to put a bit
of spray into them and see if

it's just dust in the contacts
or something like that.

I think I just felt a couple of
drops of rain. That's no good.

Let's see if she's going
to play ball this time.

We've definitely got oil. We're
going to hear the engines not banging.

This gauge has just
given some trouble.

We could have an issue with this gauge.

dirt to Haws Creek and then we

take a fat left to Perth and

It's not easy for me to do the

and oversteep inclines known
as jump-ups to get to the drill site.

radio that the fellow that's

taken us out and said
there's a bit of a jump-up.

I went up last night to Lakeland
and dropped the lead trailer

with the cement powder up
there and picked this trailer up.

They are just purely for
scrap, and we don't make

much money out of them as
we steps community speed.

Time is very, very critical.

Tonight my daughter, Theresa, graduates from
Year 12. Theresa helps me at the business

event and does a gouting and looks after the
books a bit for me, so that's a must-see.
