take on the most
extreme survival challenge

but to work together

to survive on the
desolate island of dominica.

to be on an island
with me for 21 days.

Chris: This is
no tropical island.

This is a tropical nightmare.

So, I'm just getting
ready to go out on my trip.

One thing I'm
really nervous about

is getting along with
my partner or not.

I hope he's not very
macho or demanding.

I don't really like
being bossed around

or yelled at or told what to do.

I'm nervous.

I fear the small things,
the things I can't see

that are gonna
bite me in the night.

My name is corinne.

I'm from san luis
obispo, california.

I am a registered dietician.

I've always loved survival
and being in the outdoors.

I was a total tomboy,
like, growing up.

I'm an obstacle racer,

so it's pushed my mind
and body really hard

to survive any experience.

When I have done survival
activities or races in the past,

I usually end up alone.

it's weird.

It's hot. You're sweaty.

You're naked. You've
never met this person.

You want to make
a good impression.

Most awkward thing
I've ever done in my life.

Chris: I'm more
prepared mentally

than I've ever been for
anything else in my life.

My name is chris. I'm
from cape may, new jersey.

And I'm a commercial fisherman.

So, you want to know how you
prepare for "naked and afraid?"

you should come scalloping.

You shovel piles of scallops
17 hours a day around the clock.

Ain't no rest for the wicked.

My survival skills
started at a young age.

I grew up in a hunting
and fishing family.

We didn't have much money,
so we used to hunt and fish

for our dinner, pretty much.

I spent four years
in the marine corps,

so I had the luxury of many
survival-training schools.

I can make fire in a
matter of an hour or two.

Yeah! That's what
I'm talking about!

In my personality,
I'm definitely a leader.

I've always been an alpha male.

I'm the "call it as I
see it" type of guy,

and that usually gets
me in a little trouble.

My biggest fear with my partner
would be a bad frame of mind.

I could pretty much teach them
the things to keep them alive.

They just have to have
the willingness to learn

and the willingness
to participate.

I have no problem
being naked at all

because I feel
confident in what I have,

and it's never been an issue.

It's got a curved
blade for whittling.

It's got an edged
point, so it has a drill.

have been inserted 715
miles northeast of venezuela

on the hot and humid
caribbean island of dominica.

Located in hurricane alley,

it is marked by a terrain
of razor-sharp volcanic rock

and narrow coastal shelves
studded with treacherous cliffs.

Scarce resources on the
island will force chris and corinne

to venture into ocean
shallows for protein,

leaving them vulnerable

to numerous dangers
that await them --

sea urchins with
venom-filled spines,

aggressive bull sharks,

and portuguese
man-of-war jellyfish,

whose painful sting
can induce fever, shock,

and render its
victim unconscious.

Seems like we're

How do you make your fire?

The bow and drill works.

Gonna have to find
something fibrous to make --

And then if there's a love

I think he's macho.

It's not the
cleanest-looking river, but...

Hey, I feel lucky we have water.

Chris: Parts are stagnant in it,

so I think I'm gonna
dig a ground still.

It's gonna -- it'll
taste a little dirty,

but it'll be perfectly clean

'cause it's filtered
by the ground.

It hasn't been sitting, so
there's no parasites in it

or no runoffs from
animals or anything.

You want to taste it and
make sure it's not too salty?

Yeah.

It's actually still pretty
cool and refreshing.

It's not like it's hot water.

Just really refreshing.

All right. So. I say we
come up with a game plan.

Yeah. We'll do a shelter first

before we start burning all
our energy looking for food,

'cause, I mean, you got
coconuts right at our feet, so...

Corinne: In a
survival situation,

a shelter is the difference
between life and death.

Finding our spot to build
the shelter is really important.

Chris wanted to move
all over the beach.

There might even
be a cave over there.

We'd walk around.
We'd pick a spot.

Then we'd decide no.

We'd pick another spot.
Then we'd decide no.

We'd pick another spot.

And I'm personally concerned.

Time is definitely
the enemy out here.

So, we could make it out
onto this outcropping right here.

I'm letting chris take the lead

because, you know, right now,

I feel like, with our
shelter and stuff,

it's kind of a partnership.

But, you know, I really fear
we're just wasting energy.

I mean, it looked like it was
gonna be a lot of materials

and things like that, but
obviously not the case.

Maybe it was a
little wasted effort,

but we got three
hours of daylight left.

So, I think this is a
pretty suitable spot.

Close to the water.
But far enough away

from both the
ocean and the river.

And the bugs.

Uh, we have a lot of
work, probably, to do. So...

Corinne: If, like, a
big wind comes up,

our shelter could collapse.

So we're weaving every fiber
we can find on this island --

you know, bamboo,
palm, everything.

I wonder what time it is.

Oh, I think we've been
here like six, seven hours.

I don't know. I'm a little
concerned about the shelter.

We maybe only have like
another hour or so of daylight left,

and we got to do it
before it gets dark.

If any, like, big winds
come, then I don't know.

[ chuckles ] we could
be in for a surprise.

What do you think
the goal for the night?

Should we do, like,
partial roof and partial floor?

Chris: Yeah.

I don't see a cloud in the sky,

so I think it's pretty safe

to say we're gonna
be dry for 24 hours.

I-I think so. Yeah, no problem.

this is night one.

Trying to sleep
for a couple hours,

and it's, like, been
raining all night.

It's so cold.

We're like shivering,
and teeth chattering.

I don't know how we're
gonna get through this.

It's just -- it's so cold.

We're like in the mud.

I don't know what
we're gonna do.

This is no tropical island.
This is a tropical nightmare.

That was a pretty
-- pretty rough night.

I had to open my big mouth

and say that weather probably
wasn't gonna be a factor.

Then a storm rolled in last
night, and it got freezing cold.

Lesson learned -- keep
my mouth shut from now on.

Corinne: Chris made
some bad choices yesterday

finding a place to
make our shelter.

So I'm taking the lead
today in reinforcing it.

I think it's gonna
work a lot better.

I put this side wall
up, so if it does rain,

at least we will stay dry.

Chris: Yeah.

This is way better. Chris: Yeah.

I'm glad we did so many of them.

What if we take, like,
one side of a palm frond

and put it across this?

I think we should do that.

You're never gonna
have enough cordage.

Oh, no. I'm saying like that
thing, like just right on top,

and just lash it
at the two ends.

Well, look at this
side. The thing is,

once it gets windy, it'll
bring everything down.

I'd rather just lose the palms

than lose the
side of the shelter.

Chris doesn't like
to listen to me at all.

It's kind of frustrating
and annoying.

It's nothing personal.

Chris: Right now, I know
she's trying to take the lead,

but wind is definitely an issue.

Palm fronds face a
certain way for a reason.

Bottom line is, it's what
important for the team.

It's not about ego.

Corinne: What are you doing?

Cutting the same log that
I was cutting an hour ago.

Why?

'cause I want to block the wind

on that front side

of the, uh, "a"-frame.

Chopping that big log, it
really seems like a lot of work

just for a little piece of wood

when we could maybe go find a
piece somewhere on the beach.

You know, it's just not smart.

I know what my job is.

I know my skill set.

I know what my role is here.

We just have to be sure
we, you know, work smart

and conserve our energy.

Timber.

For me, it's not a big deal.

Corinne: Chris can
go waste his energy,

but it's really annoying.

I didn't think shelter
was gonna be such, like,

an ongoing, long process.

It's all good. It'll
get the job done.

And that's the important thing.

Chris does not listen to me

when it comes to
pretty much everything.

I don't think I'm
better than him,

but I also think he doesn't like
taking advice from a woman.

Chris: There's nothing easy
about a survival situation.

mean, I am who I am.

I think she needs to take
the time she needs to evaluate

and maybe just, you
know, toughen that --

thicken that skin up
a little bit, you know.

Hopefully, it won't
be a problem.

The last thing I want to
do is ruin the friendship

and the trust that
we have in our team.

the wind is, like,
blowing so much outside.

And it's just like
really freaking cold.

The sun feels pretty good.

with a fish trap first

just because my body is
starving for protein right now.

I feel pretty strong I'd
have a fire lit within an hour.

I don't think it
will be an issue.

Is it covering? Yeah. It does.

Let's make a fish trap.

So, this fishing trap --

the idea is that
the fish swim in,

and then they get confused,

and then they can't get out.

We could set this for
half a day or a night

and then come back,

and hopefully, there'd
be some fish in it.

It's my buoy.

That way, I don't lose my trap.

I commercial-fish for a living.

You know, granted,
I use equipment

that could cause you
to lose limbs and fingers.

But hopefully, this
bundle of sticks works.

In the water, there's certain
things that can really hurt you.

There's the lionfish.

There's stonefish, the
sharks, and the jellyfish.

You got to pay attention
and be careful what you do.

I put a couple
rocks in the trap.

It's not really holding
bottom strongly, but it's okay.

It's still -- I mean, it
still can catch fish.

And it's not like
lobsters can't swim,

so if they smell the food
and they want it bad enough,

they'll get in that trap, so...

We'll see what
tomorrow brings --

hopefully, a little success.

This afternoon, we
have plans on making fire.

We're gonna try the bow drill.

This is such a pretty piece
of rope for the bow drill.

Yeah. This is a good one here.

My ability to start a
fire is pretty strong,

so hopefully, an hour later,
we can go walk on the beach.

it's a necessity that you
have proper cordage.

Weaving palm fronds
and banana paper together

doesn't seem to hold up,
so that doesn't help at all.

When you've been able to
successfully do a skill at home,

and then, when that skill
really matters and you can't do it,

We won't have to worry
about cordage breaking.

basically, the concept is,

is I'm gonna rub the rounded end

against the coarse end
with tinder inside of it

to hopefully get enough
ember to get a fire started.

Corinne: We've been
getting smoke, but no spark.

So, if we didn't have any smoke,
we would have just given up,

but since we have
smoke, it's like this tease.

Corinne: I'm so frustrated
with chris right now.

He says he can make fire,

but the only thing that
he brings to me right now

is body heat at night.

Corinne: [ voice breaking
] I'm not as motivated

to go do things today.

And I know we probably
have a lot we should do,

but everything just hurts --

like, physically hurts from
making the fire yesterday.

or not making
the fire yesterday.

few days, chris and corinne

expend large amounts of energy

as they continue their
attempt at making fire.

I don't have enough
muscle left to do this.

The welcome nourishment
from the coconuts and sea urchins

they've been able to find

has not been enough to
abate their increasing hunger,

and their frustration
is mounting.

Chris: We're
getting to a point now

where we really need protein.

I really hope there's
something in this fish trap.

As far as my body's
concerned, I'm starving.

So with that being said, I'm
gonna go hike down this beach,

try and kill some crabs.

I mean, even if I have
to eat it raw, whatever.

Protein's protein at this point.

It's becoming pretty necessary.

Looks like we got a

...Which actually will
help me out tremendously

in starting fire.

This is pretty awesome.

My theory on this is, if we
went with a tandem bow,

you know, we'll probably
save a lot of energy.

With two people on it,
you get a faster stroke.

lot more friction,

and with a lot more friction,
you have a better chance at fire.

Corinne: Chris suggests
that we use a tandem bow,

but I can't picture
how it will work.

It's fricking hard to hold.

I don't know if I can hold it.

a thorn in my side.

so I don't know why he doesn't
just use his big man muscles

and make the
bow-drill fire himself.

with just fatigue.

and my hands hurting --

to do -- chop firewood.

Last two nights, I seen
all kind of crabs out,

so gonna go see if we
can't find one or two.

All right. So, we got
one of these black crabs

that I've been attempting
to find for the last 17 days.

The lack of protein's really
starting to wear on me.

I'm empty. I'm drained.

See if we can't get him here.

Little bastards are fast.

Got me some black
crab for breakfast.

Been out here over two
weeks without any protein.

And, uh, you know,
survival of the fittest.

Oh, he don't like that.

Last I checked, I'm the
top of the food chain.

I also cut down an
adolescent palm tree

and got some hearts of palm,

so I actually have a pretty
good stew going right now.

This kill for me right now

is the difference
between starvation

and being on top of my game
when it's time for extraction.

On a scale of 1 to
10, meals in my life,

I have to say this is up there.

Yep. Bummer, man.

She couldn't hack it 'cause
there wasn't enough food.

It absolutely is the best
thing I've ever tasted.

Tomorrow is my extraction.

Looking at my map,
the easiest way to go

is to climb up this cliff face

and try and make it
to my extraction point.

and sharp volcanic
rocks along the shoreline,

chris' best chance of
getting to his extraction

will be to transport
burning embers

over a 2-mile trek
along treacherous cliffs

to a beach further
south on the island.

There, he will need
to build a signal fire

to alert a rescue ship
to come pick him up.

Chris: I have to reach this
extraction point and set a fire.

It is my way of signaling
my extraction team.

I actually have
to carry my fire.

If the fire goes out, I
can't complete this mission.

So, I'm feeling pretty confident

that once I get to
my extract point,

I can get a fire
going pretty easy,

especially if the weather
conditions stay this favorable.

[ lightning crashes ]

I'm freezing.

Oh [bleep] that's not good.

I just woke up, and
my fire's almost out.

I've got to keep
this thing going.

Without fire, there's no
signal for my extraction.

It's game over.

Narrator: When chris
began his 21-day survival test

in dominica,

he and his partner

were both given a primitive
survival rating, or psr.

I [bleep] hate being
on this island with him.

I want to get the
[bleep] away from him.

Narrator: Since corinne
reached her breaking point

and decided to leave
dominica on day 13,

her final psr will
drop considerably.

Chris has thrived since
corinne's departure,

having secured some
much-needed protein.

His final psr will
not be determined

until he safely
gets off the island.

But with one day remaining,

chris now faces
the intimidating task

of reaching his
extraction alone.

Chris: At this point,
I'm just -- I'm so tired.

This last week has
really worn me down.

I'm definitely the most
fatigued I've ever been.

Narrator: After three weeks on
the desolate island of dominica,

chris now faces
another daunting task --

keeping burning embers
alive on a 2-mile trek.

He has to make a signal fire so
the rescue ship can pick him up.

Chris: It's time to go to work.

Hollowed out a piece of bamboo,

and I'm gonna use a pot as my
way to transfer my hot embers

from my camp to
the extraction point.

[bleep] hot.

Bamboo is compartmental,

so I carry embers
in the top one,

and then I carved a hook in
the bottom to carry my pot,

which I'm also
gonna fill with embers.

Just in case one goes
out, I do have a backup.

Let's be off.

All right. Here
comes the tricky part.

It would not have
made a difference to me

if corinne was here.

She wouldn't have
made it any easier.

I mean, only one
person's gonna carry fire.

I guarantee you it
would have been me.

I think it'll move a lot
faster with me by myself.

Definitely pretty
hairy right at this point

'cause it's so slippery.

I'm just looking --
anything I can to hold on to.

Little more tired
than I thought I was.

This thing's getting real hot,

and my embers are already
cooking through my bamboo.

[ sighs ]

suck it up and get going.

It is extremely hot.

Finally, we're at
my extraction point,

'cause this thing's
burning a hole in my hand.

Black smoke -- usually you
want to use stuff that's green

that will burn.

I got a pretty good
plume of smoke going,

and definitely
looking for the boat.

Dude, come on already.

Get me off the [bleep] island.

[ horn honks ]

yo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!

He's doing a circle
on that sandbar.

I guess he can't make it.

Narrator: With the boat
unable to make it to the shore,

chris must now swim
through rough seas

to reach the rescue vessel.

Chris: The unfortunate thing is,

I really don't have
anything left in the tank.

I got to swim with a knife
that weighs 5 pounds.

And I got to go through
the sandbar, too.

I got to watch out for them
urchins and [bleep] again.

I hope there ain't
no sharks out today.

It's a little choppy,

so hopefully, they're elsewhere

in little calmer waters.

And the sea doesn't
look to be calming any.

If anything, it seems
to be picking up,

so it's gonna be an ass-kicker.

There's stonefish,
there's fire coral,

and there's fire worms,
which, you know,

is like getting stung by
a man-of-war jellyfish --

not to mention the amount of
sharks that are around here.

I could just hold my
breath and ball up

and do it just like a jellyfish.

That way, you have less
things dangling in the water

to attract sharks.

[ inhales deeply ]

In life and in my career,
I'm a member of a team.

Because I was abandoned,

I was forced to be
my own support team.

But that just comes along
with -- you know, that's life.

Great challenge.

Great experience.

Something I'll never forget.

I mean, this place is trying.

If it isn't the weather,
it's the terrain.

If it's not the terrain,
it's the lack of food.

If it's not the lack of food,
it's just -- it's the bugs.

Don't be mistaken by its beauty.

It's a bitch.

This island has
definitely humbled me.

You know, again, I did come
in here cavalier, alpha-male,

kind of cocky.

And, you know, obviously
I didn't have fire in an hour.

Sorry that corinne
didn't make it,

but it was a great
experience for me.

Narrator: Over the course
of their survival ordeal,

corinne and chris went through

significant mental
and physical changes.

Even though she abandoned
the challenge on day 13,

corinne lost 12 pounds,

and chris dropped
a total of 21 pounds.

Based on their performance,
their psrs were reassessed.

Chris successfully
completed the challenge,

raising his psr from a 7.1
to a high intermediate 7.9.

Corinne's early departure
reduces her rating

from a 6.1 to a low
intermediate 4.9.

I chose to not
finish the challenge,

but that doesn't mean -- I
didn't leave with nothing.

I've definitely learned
a lot about hunger,

and I can't even imagine
what it would be like

to go a lifetime
feeling that way.

Chris: My mom and
dad picked me up.

I'm so proud of you.

uh, made me the man that I am.

He made it all the way.

proving he has what it takes
to survive naked and afraid.
