we're going to go out, we're
going to check the fences

and the gates on the perimeter.

It's all hands on deck
to get this done.

suggest you all go home

and wait it out.

Yeah. Weather report says it's
going to pass pretty quickly.

[James] Be careful.

down the hatches.

Last storm, we had a guy

who tried to rescue his
barn cat from the roof.

That cat could have come
down on its own accord.

There was no reason for him
to get up on that ladder

with the high winds, but he did.

And what happened?

Well, as soon as he got
to the top of the ladder,

the cat came barreling
down the roof line,

knocked him off balance,

and he landed in
a pile of manure.

Sprained ankle and a
very badly bruised ego.

And the worst part is,

you know, the cat
couldn't care less.

Right. You're a dog person.

Oh, aren't you?

Actually, I was pretty
attached to Marmalade as a kid.

- Marmalade...

Huge orange Tom cat that
used to mouse in the barn.

That sounds like a working cat.

He was. He used to bring us
little gifts he'd catch too.

so I know them pretty well.

there, I've seen worse.

You know, one summer with my
dad, there was a storm so bad

that it threatened to
tear the barn right apart.

We were using our backs
to hold the doors closed

while the wind howled outside.

stranded with the right man.

going to be just fine.

[loud crash of thunder]

[Zephyr whines]

Aunt Amy, where can
I find more candles?

Uh, there should be some
in that drawer there.

He must've gone to Martha's.

If he was scouting the
furthest perimeter,

that would have been
the closest option.

the gator, doesn't he?

Which is why it's weird that
he hasn't come back sooner.

Especially because you
know how he is with storms.

[Janet's phone buzzes]

Hey Eric, how's the clinic?

Where is he? This is
so on brand for Dad.

For someone who doesn't want
people to make a fuss about him,

he sure knows how
to create drama.

I guess that's why the rodeo

was such a good fit for
him back in the day.

Okay. Can, can you please
tell us about the rodeo?

Because Mom and Dad told us
nothing when we were kids.

Nothing.

Well he competed in high school,
was best in the foothills.

Every college in
Montana and Wyoming

offered him a scholarship.

He was a promising rodeo star.

Wait, what?

That doesn't make sense.
Dad didn't go to college.

No, he turned all the
scholarships down.

Grandpa Robert
didn't let him go.

Oh no, he would
have let him go.

Our dad was Willis'
number one fan.

He never missed a competition.

And so what happened?

Well, this was before your time,

but the 1970's was
a huge boom time

for the cattle
ranching business.

And the Red Oak
was going gangbusters.

Our dad was planning
to hire a foreman

if Willis went off to college.

But when it came down to time
to make that final decision,

Willis couldn't do it.

He didn't want the ranch
to be in the hands of

someone who wasn't family.

And I was way too young.
So it was up to him.

And so Dad gave up the
scholarships, the rodeo,

the education, all of
it just for the ranch,

to preserve the family legacy.

But I don't get it.

He could have done all of that

and still come back
when he was older.

But he didn't want a stranger
to get all the knowledge

and experience that
our dad would pass on

during those years.

And our dad wasn't
getting any younger.

And I think Willis knew
how valuable that time was.

And I left and I didn't
and I still don't.

And that's what Dad
thinks, isn't it?

James, this
is about Willis.

This is not about you.

No, I know.

But it, it feels like it's
about me, especially for Dad.

The whole thing with Dad
is about working hard,

setting aside yourself and doing
it for the next generation.

From Great-Granddad to Granddad
to Dad, to then who?

Okay.

[Aunt Amy] I know we all
pray about this.

Me, Willis, both of you.

We all want to find a
solution for the future,

but stressing about it and
pressuring each other

and blaming ourselves
helps no one.

We're all living our lives
the best way we know how.

to roll my eyes

when people would say
it doesn't matter,

but I truly don't mind any
path my child's going to take.

As long as they're
healthy and happy.

[water dripping]

[Lewis] Oh no.

Oh, well someone's
apartment had to flood.

I guess today that's us.

I'll go get some towels.

Do we have any rubber boots?

I don't, I don't know.
I'll go check.

[Lewis] Hey, no matter what,
we're going to be okay.

[Lewis] Oh my.

[thunder]

[Zephyr growls]

Did I wake you, your
majesty? I'm sorry.

A lot of good rides on this one.

I remember one time we were
riding through Oklahoma,

got caught in a bad squall.

We ended up under a highway
overpass to wait it out.

I'll never forget it.

Because there was a twister
that just came out of nowhere.

It was weaving its
way across the plains

picking up speed.

We couldn't move,
we had nowhere to go.

It was coming right for us.

We thought we were done for,

just braced ourselves
for the worst.

And then about a
quarter mile out,

it just poof!

Turned in the
other direction.

It was like it just stopped
at a traffic light,

and started going
the other way.

And we thanked God after that.

It must have been him keeping us
out of harm's way like that.

[tree creaking]

[loud banging sound]

[Zephyr whines]

I did not like the
sound of that.

[Zephyr barks loud]

[Willis struggles]

[Willis winces in pain]

[Willis groans]

[Willis] Okay.

Now what do
you want to do?

[Zephyr barks]

Oh, thank goodness.
Seems to be letting up.

I am going to go
check on the animals

and wait for your
dad to get home.

All right, if you're
good doing that,

I'm going to run into town,
make sure everyone's okay.

You mean check on Maggie?

Yes, Maggie happens
to be in town too.

[Janet's phone buzzes]

That's Eric.

Hey Eric, you're on speaker.
Power back on?

Uh, not yet. You?

Not yet, but the storm's
definitely passing by.

Listen, uh, things are
getting pretty crazy here

with walk-ins since
the rain stopped.

[Eric] Any chance you

Yes, I can come, but I
lent Nathan my truck.
