on a sea urchin.

There's blood in the water.

Whoa! A shark, right there.

Dani: Oh, my god.

Narrator: One man and one
woman, both experienced survivalists,

are taking on the most
punishing adventure of their lives.

[ gasps ] oh!

I want to go home.

Narrator: They have no
water, no food, and no clothes.

Their task is to survive

on the barren island of
andros in the west indies

for 21 days...

Dani: Get me the
hell out of here.

Am I emotionally
prepared? Maybe.

[ laughs ] that's the
best answer I got for that.

My name's dani
julien. 27 years old.

I am a nature-loving,
granola-eating california girl.

I don't do this for a living,

but that doesn't mean
that I'm not good at it

and that I can't hack it.

I can make fire.

I can build a pretty
decent shelter.

I'm not scared to
go play in the woods.

I personally would
really like to know,

can I push myself to the point

where I honestly think I'm
going to die and get past that?

I want to know.

I want to meet this
fellow really bad.

Justin: My first impressions of
everything I can see around me

is it's extremely
thick and bushy.

I'm justin bullard
from callahan, florida.

I'm happily married,

and I'm a firefighter/paramedic
for the past eight years.

I think my occupation's gonna
help me succeed out here

because I'm used
to stressful situations.

I became a survivalist just
by growing up in the woods,

and I turkey hunt, deer
hunt, gator hunt -- everything.

[ squealing ]

if it's alive and can be
caught, it's gonna be,

and it's gonna be eaten.

I do a lot of
killing. [ laughs ]

it's like a minefield of rocks.

Wow.

Pine trees. I was
expecting an island.

Looks like home to me.

I'm obsessed
with survival stuff.

I love it. I breathe it.

I live it, and, also,
I like being naked.

Ladies, it's cold outside, I
promise, but let's go do this.

dani: I wore cute
underwear today.

I'm pretty okay
with being naked,

and I'm not worried
about any romance.

But I'm hoping that my partner
has a knowledge of hunting

because that's something
that I'm not that familiar with.

I'm not much of a hunter.

All right. 21 days.
No more clothes.

Here we go.

Justin: In my partner, I'm looking
for someone who's mentally tough.

And above all else, I am a man.

I am from the south.
We do it the old way.

I'm hoping my partner

has appreciation
and respect for that.

Narrator: Knowing
they will need a blade

to carve weapons
and build shelter,

dani has chosen
to bring a machete.

Justin, lacking
primitive fire skills,

has brought a fire starter.

Yay!

[ chuckling ] oh,
yes. Excellent.

Well, that's all
I got in my bag.

I have got...

Oh, you got the map.

[ singsong voice
] I've got a map.

All right. Let's see
what's on the map.

Justin and dani were dropped off

along the western edge
of the bermuda triangle

in the pine forest
of andros island.

With the third-largest
barrier reef in the world,

it's a breeding ground
for venomous stingrays

and the menacing 10-foot
caribbean reef shark

known for its sudden,
terrifying acceleration.

Dani and justin will have to
navigate along a harsh terrain

of razor-sharp limestone
rock and dense vegetation

that contains toxic
poisonwood trees,

conceals dangerous wild boar,

and the bahamian boa, which
can reach lengths of up to 8 feet.

With limited sources of
freshwater on the island,

trekking northeast
will give the survivalists

an ample supply at one of
the iconic blue holes of andros.

All right. So, this is
where we are here.

Day 1 strategy -- locate
water and resources.

I think we should
head northeast here.

What part of california?
I'm from santa cruz.

Oh, so you're a
tree-hugging hippie?

[ laughs ] uh-huh.

Justin: I'm a redneck.
She's a hippie. Whatever.

As long as she can be okay
with me being a dumb hillbilly,

I'm okay with her
being a hippie.

Hell, hippies are resourceful.
They live off the land.

They like trees and bugs
and [bleep] I mean, that's cool.

Justin: I was born
in jacksonville,

raised there, stayed
there, never go anywhere.

It wasn't until the
last four or five years

I actually started
traveling at all.

Just go on hunting
trips and stuff.

Dani: That's cool, though.

That's basically what I
live and breathe is hunting.

I mean, that's all
I think about 24/7.

Right. Right, right.

Dani: He's a redneck,

and I am apparently a
"tree-hugging hippie."

I think that we're
pretty opposite.

Narrator: Justin and dani's
ability to work together

is crucial to their success
in completing this challenge.

A survival expert

with decades of experience
teaching wilderness survival

has assessed justin and dani,

giving them a psr, or
primitive survival rating.

Justin's experience
as a firefighter

scores him very high
in dealing with stress,

but his attitude about
traditional male/female roles

may count against him
with a free-spirited partner.

He scores a psr in the
intermediate range of 7.6.

Dani has extensive
survival skills,

but her lack of experience surviving
in the wild for extended periods of time

could hurt her.

She's been rated just a few
notches below justin at 7.4.

Our experts will
re-evaluate their psrs

at the end of the
21-day challenge.

[ laughs ] it's harsh.

It's definitely not
what you think about

when you think you're coming
to an island in the bahamas.

[ grunts ] it's all rock.
There ain't no sand here.

It's like the freakin'
surface of an asteroid.

So, you lived in
california your whole life?

More or less.

In 2008, I was volunteering
abroad in tanzania.

And my house was broken in,
and I hid, but my roommate did not.

To make the long
story very short,

I came out alive,
and he did not.

Holy [bleep] huh.

And traditional therapy
was not working.

Right.

So we decided

that some wilderness
therapy might be effective,

and that's what started my
interest in this kind of stuff.

What happened in tanzania

was the hardest thing
that I have had to deal with.

But if I can look back on that,
say, "wow, I got through that,"

that will play a part in getting
through this challenge, for sure.

Justin: I don't know what's ahead
of us. Hopefully the garden of eden.

This must be
our... Our blue hole.

Oh, this is awesome.

This is great. Wow.

This is fantastic.

Narrator: The placid
blue holes of andros

disguise the potential
terror beneath the surface.

These mysterious,
water-filled cave systems

can reach depths of 900 feet

and contain dangerous
twisting, turning labyrinths

of maze-like passageways.

Dani: So we've gotten
out to the blue hole,

and the rock here
is so aggressive.

It rips at your soles, and we
can't get anything else done

until we have shoes on our feet.

I am collecting some love vine.

This is gonna be the
bottom of my shoe.

Not necessarily the sole.

The sole's gonna
take a little bit longer.

Probably make that
out of palmetto stock.

Try that out. See if it works.

Justin: Hell yeah.

Oh, it's like on a
cloud. It's beautiful.

Awesome.

Narrator: The makeshift
shoes offer a little relief

so they can turn their attention to
building a shelter before nightfall.

Justin: We hit the
ground running here.

Boom, boom, boom. Let's
build a kick-ass shelter

so you're not out
in the elements.

And you expend a lot of energy.
So you're putting out sweat.

If you're not
putting it back in,

it's basically a
motor running hot.

That's very, very dangerous.

That's perfect.

Feel like we have
shelter tonight.

Yeah.

There it is. Beautiful.

[ sighs ] how are we
going to get water?

Narrator: The blue holes
of andros are unique

because they are fed
saltwater from the ocean,

but a layer of freshwater,
supplied by rainfall,

sits on top.

This separation occurs
because the saltwater is denser,

causing it to sink, leaving
the freshwater on the surface.

How about this theory?

We fill up all these
pocket holes we can.

That's been in full sun all day.

Right, and the u.V. Rays
in this portion of the world

are so intense

that they're gonna kill
everything that's in there.

I think that that's
a really good idea.

The u.V. Light's more
than enough to kill bacteria,

at least on the surface level.

I mean, hell, there's nothing
more powerful than u.V. Light.

All right, I'll be the
guinea pig on this theory.

Dani: Okay.

How's it taste?

Tastes like fish water.

The bad side of not drinking
it is dying of dehydration.

Diarrhea is better than dying.

So maybe I'll get some
dysentery, whatever,

something that'll
run its course.

Drinking straight from the
blue hole is a calculated risk,

and even sometimes
boiling can be not 100%.

Very nice.

Put that away
so I don't lose it.

Today was actually
really successful.

We got a killer shelter
started. Yeah, I'm excited.

And we've got our fire going.

Now, if I had me a
cold beer and a guitar,

it would be all right. Yeah.

I already got a naked chick. I
need a cold beer and a guitar.

[ laughs ]

this is the best camping
trip I've ever been on.

It's about to be. [ laughs ]

[ insects chirping ]

yeah, I need to take a bath

'cause I've got mud
in my butt crack.

Can't be having that on tv, yo.

[ laughs ] and
that's really gross.

As much as I love having
mud in my butt crack...

It's got to go.

Yeah. I think I might
wash that out tomorrow.

[ rustling ]

dani, you hear that?

something came all
the way up to our camp --

I mean, like, inside
our camp, almost.

But as soon as I
saw it, it was gone.

Dani: Something cruised
through our camp at night,

and we don't really
know what it is.

Justin went up
to go looking for it.

Justin: Whatever
that was last night,

I'm gonna find it,
and I'm gonna kill it.

We're gonna go on a walkabout.

When you're an
opportunistic hunter,

you keep moving and
hopefully find something edible.

[ light grunts ]

you hear that?

[ grunting ]

that's a boar.

Looks good.

Oh, damn.

Oh, god.

Damn, that hurt. This sucks.

Oh, come on. Really?

Killing a pig is a pipe dream
because they're much better

on this terrain than I am,
and they have hooves.

I don't have hooves.
I got fleshy baby feet.

Can't even walk
around. It's pitiful.

I got on something over there.

I believe it was a pig.

It was a four-footed
hooved creature.

Awesome. But there's no way.

You need a shotgun and a pair
of jeans and some snake boots

to get through this stuff.

Dani: Really disappointing
that justin didn't get that pig.

We could really use the protein.

Okay.

Narrator: Andros has the
largest concentration of land crabs

in the bahamas.

Unlike marine crabs,

these mud dwellers burrow
down 10 feet below the surface.

The claw from a large crab

could easily sever one
of dani or justin's fingers.

Aah. Do not like
sticking my hand in holes.

Dani: Catching crabs is the
ultimate game of hide and go seek.

Kind of have to
just tell yourself

to sack up and go for it

'cause if you don't,
you don't have dinner.

God, that goes down so deep.

Oh, please don't find anything.

Please don't find
anything. Please don't...

Not comfortable.
Not comfortable at all.

I feel rocks.

[ gasps ] oh! He's in there.

Ow!

[bleep]

Ha!

I got a crab!

[ laughs ]

you, you little [bleep]

mm!

One crab. Whatever.

Dani: If you've got a partner

that is negative or can't
pull their own weight,

that can really bring you down,

and you might
fail because of it.

"whatever"?

It's upsetting. It's
really upsetting.

Justin wants so badly
to be the provider,

but it seems that his
primitive hunting skill set

is not up to par for
what I was expecting.

It's my role as a man

to try to provide and...

[grunts]

hunter-gatherer...

I don't know.

Just feel like it's
the right thing to do.

Narrator: The light
of the full moon

brings out clouds of
blood-sucking gnats.

Less than a quarter-inch long,
millions of these tiny predators

use four sharp
blades in their mouths

to tear at dani
and justin's flesh.

Oh.

[ buzzing ]

dani: These gnats
are killing me.

Justin: I don't know how these
little creatures bite so damn hard.

Oh, god.

You don't understand how
much something can annoy you.

I mean, we'd not go five seconds
without having to swat a gnat.

You're constantly swatting,
rubbing your legs. It's brutal.

Ow, they're eating us alive.

Dani: The bugs, of all things,
are really starting to get to me --

not just physically,
but mentally.

I started my time of
the month yesterday.

So that's not helping.

So, right now, I am taking mud,

and I'm putting it on my
skin to make a barrier.

Like, the mud is more of a
psychological thing for me.

So that I feel like I'm
doing something about it.

[ thunder rumbles ]

justin: Hoping that by
burning this termites nest,

we can get rid of these gnats
and mosquitoes and stuff.

Get, like, a big
hunk to put in there.

Narrator: Burning the termite mound
acts as a natural insect repellant.

The nest smolders slowly,
producing a steady smoke,

and the termites give off a
chemical called naphthalene,

the same chemical in
mothballs, that repels gnats.

I can't handle that anymore.

[ buzzing ]

[ grunts ]

ow. This sucks.

I'm so over it.

Dani: Oh, my god.

[ sniffs ]

so far, nothing is
working for the bugs.

No termite nest,
no smoke, no fire.

She's having some kind of
allergic reaction to these gnat bites,

and it's getting pretty bad.

Dani: It's not three
or four bug bites.

My entire body is
covered in bug bites.

I've peeled half of my
skin off with my fingernails

at this point.

Justin: I was thinking that the blue
hole was going to be a paradise,

but it's a living hell.

I don't think we
can survive here.

There's not enough food
to sustain 21 days of life.

This place is harsh.
This place is bad.

Something's got to change.
This is killing us here.

[ sighs ] I want to
go to the beach.

Yeah, I do, too.

Oh, my god.

This is what we
do all night long.

All night.

Something's got to
be better than that.

Justin: This blue
hole is a dead zone.

There's no fish. There's no
life. You can't walk anywhere.

The razor rocks
shred your feet up.

We built shoes out of vines,
but they only last a half a day.

You got to build new shoes.

You can't live here.

We got to be in
this dense patch.

Got to be.

Dani: Let's go. Get
the hell out of here.

We know there's
beach five miles away,

but that's five
miles of pure hell.

Absolute jungle, razor rocks.

And we don't even know if
there's any freshwater there.

Narrator: Weakened from having
consumed only 200 calories between them

in the last three days

and unable to carry a
supply of freshwater,

moving to the beach

is a calculated risk
for justin and dani.

Justin: That sun's getting hotter
by the second. Promise you that.

This has been the most
treacherous walk I've been on

since I've been here. Yep.

We get all the way there and
there's no water, I'm screwed.

Ocean's on the other
side of those trees.

We just have to get
across this swampland.

Whoa, yeah. There's
rocks underneath there.

[ waves pounding in distance ]

I hear it. I hear it.

I see something
better than a blue hole.

Freedom!

Open area!

Whoo!

Walked about five hours through
the nastiest stuff imaginable.

Got to the beach here, and hey,
it's better than where we were.

Awesome.

Goodbye, blue
hole. Hello, paradise.

It's absolutely beautiful.

Bet there's all kinds of
critters out here we can eat.

There's a lot of potential
food here in the ocean.

Just got to be careful
'cause there's a lot of sharks.

Black tips, reef sharks,
a lot of barracuda,

a lot of things
that can hurt us.

Oh, my god. Look at this.

I mean, there is
garbage everywhere.

The next 14 days, I mean, she can walk
the beach as much as she wants, you know,

but right now, I think the
focus should be rehydrating.

It's just me, though.
So I'm gonna go do that.

Dani: I'm really, really
happy to be here,

but this is probably one
of the most beautiful places

I've ever been in my life,
and it's covered in garbage.

[ voice breaking ]
absolutely covered.

Narrator: Each day, a massive
amount of trash from landfill

is deposited in
the atlantic ocean.

Storms and ocean currents carry
it toward the bahamian islands,

which act as a catchall
for the tons of debris

that threaten wildlife
and ecosystems.

Dani: Just [bleep] everywhere.

It's really sad.

But at this point, you know,

I'm gonna make the most of
it and use as much as I can.

Justin: You really need
three things to survive.

You need fire, you need
a blade -- a steel blade --

and you need something to boil
water in to get pure drinking water.

Well, luckily, there's a plethora
of bottles and stuff on this beach

and semi-fresh pool of water
down the way about 200 yards.

Got to get a good fire going and
set these bottles around the fire.

It's likely to start
boiling soon,

and I'm gonna
chug them bastards.

Boiling it killed everything
that's floating in it, so...

[ sighs ] god.

My partner lost
our fire starter.

Without fire, we
can't boil water.

We can't drink water.

Without fire, we're
potentially dead.

Now it's serious. We
have to keep fire going.

Narrator: The loss of the fire
starter jeopardizes their survival.

Dani: Do you want me to help
you collect sticks or anything?

Justin: We need to
make sure this is going.

It's trying to go out.

Okay. You want me to
watch it? I can watch it.

Please. Please
don't [bleep] it up.

I will try not to. Please don't.

Justin: I'm a firefighter.

I'm an expert at putting
fire out. [ chuckles ]

there's the irony in having
to keep a single fire going.

Narrator: During
the next two days,

dani and justin subsist
on coconuts and sea snails.

A severe lack of protein is
causing weakness, irritability,

and dangerously compromising
their immune systems.

[ bird screeches ]

I'm gonna go fishing, see
if there's any food out there.

Have fun.

Dani: He seems to
think that it was my fault

that the fire starter
disappeared.

So I'm gonna try and go fishing

and see if I can catch a fish
or catch a lobster. I don't know.

Justin: Sitting
here in the shelter.

Beautiful day out.

Babysitting the fire because we
have to keep the same one going

from here till the
end of our trip.

Yes! Justin, I got a fish! Ha!

She's hollering down here
like she got her something.

Yes! I was babysitting the fire,

and she's out there
walking around in the water.

So maybe she got her a fish.

Mm. Not bad for a
chick with a pointy stick.

It's ridiculous.

I babysat today while
she could go and have fun,

and the whole reason we have
to fire watch now is 'cause of her.

Is the fire out? Just about.

Okay, well, I'm gonna
go get on it then.

Might have to nurse it.

Dani: If he's gonna be at camp
and I'm gonna be out hunting,

he needs to make sure
that that fire's going.

I was excited.

You'd think that if I
brought home dinner,

somebody would be, like,
"wow. Thanks. That's awesome.

Good for you."

you know? Something.

Anything.

Good god. Just come off.

Justin: I'm supposed
to be the one hunting.

And pocahontas here, she
ended up sticking a fish, a snapper.

Good for her.

[ sighs ]

I feel bad, but I don't.

I worked my ass off to be here
and..I went out and I did this.

I did this. I'm proud of myself.

We were doing really
good for the first week,

and I don't know where
his head's at right now.

You want some fish?

Justin: I think I'm
good right now.

[ grunts ]

the other half is for you. So...

You need that more than I do.

He did not want any of my fish.

Whether that be for
pride reasons or otherwise,

more fish for me.

Justin: Dani -- she
has a huge skill set

and a huge knowledge
base for survival,

but in the south, the man's
the head of the household.

The woman takes care of
the dinner and the clothes.

My papa never made
his own plate of food.

Till the day he died, granny
always cooked his food,

made it for him, and
washed his dishes.

Dani: He's from the south,

and I don't even really know
how they do it in the south.

It's very different from
how I do it, apparently.

Justin: I can't stand this
bad marriage relationship.

I can't do it.

I want to go home.

Justin: In the south, the man's
the head of the household.

The woman takes care of
the dinner and the clothes,

and obviously, dani's
from a different mind-set.

Dani: It kind of goes
into the realm of,

"I'm the man, you're the woman.

This is what I do, and
that's what you do,"

which is not the case
where I come from.

I can go hunt. I can
bring home food.

I can be the
breadwinner, so to speak.

We do need to have an
outright discussion today.

I understand that you,

you know, you want
to be the provider

and you want to be the
hero and all that business,

but I'm so capable
of so many things,

and I have a lot of talents.

I can kill a fish.

It's just --

if you could say thanks if I
bring home food and eat it.

Understood. It's nothing
about you bringing fish home,

and...

It's not even just
the fish, though.

It's like saying in
a way to me, like,

"oh, you're gonna
need it more than I do,"

when, you know, we both need it.

My other thing --

and this is actually a
lot harder to bring up

just 'cause I don't know how
you're going to respond to this...

...But I do feel like I
deserve an answer.

Okay.

So, your skills, your
primitive skills coming into this.

Right.

You said you had
primitive hunting skills.

Yes.

I have not seen...
A lot of that.

Were you really prepared
coming into this situation?

Yes. All right.

There wasn't a lot of
animals to hunt over there.

There wasn't a
lot of opportunity,

and for opportunity
for hunting here,

there hasn't been any

because we've only
been here for two days,

and the only time that was
really able to go out and hunt,

you were down there, hunting.

Do you see that?

I was here with the fire, which
I figured we'd have our turns.

Anything else?

Nope, that's really all
that I had to say for now.

We are in a
relationship right now.

After that, I don't care
what you think of me

or if you ever talk to
me again or anything,

but right now, we
have to get along.

Justin: The reason
she lives in california

and the reason I
live where I live --

it was meant to be that way.

Me and dani are pretty much
quiet around each other now.

We don't really talk
very much anymore.

You can't be with
anybody for 21 days straight

every single waking second
and every sleeping second

and not have problems.

That's impossible.

Dani: The trauma of
losing a friend in tanzania

and learning to get
through all of that

has helped me in this situation.

I've used some of those
tools to push through

some of the harder mental
phases of this challenge.

Justin: Looking pretty
ominous. That's definitely rain.

Wind's picking up, and it's
definitely rain over there, too.

[ thunder rumbles ]

[ rainfall ]

keep me a fire going for
12 days is quite a task.

That means you can't go out

and venture, hunt,
fish, nothing like that.

Somebody's always got
to be babysitting the fire.

If it gets windy, if it rains.

I don't care what kind of
shelter you got the fire under.

If it monsoons out here,
the fire's gonna be out.

Keep feeding that.

Narrator: For two weeks,
a severe lack of food

has caused justin and
dani's bodies to deplete

the fat reserves they had prior
to coming into this challenge.

The average person eats
about 2,000 calories per day.

Dani and justin have
barely consumed

2,000 calories per week.

With the daunting task

of a two-mile raft trek to
their extraction approaching,

their bodies are now consuming
muscle for vital energy,

making them feel
weak and disoriented.

Justin: Dani has no energy
to do anything right now.

She's starting to
look emaciated now.

She just moves real
slow, very, very weak.

I'm a firefighter.

Even when you hate
your guy next to you,

you still got to
be a team player,

pull him out when you need to.

Everybody's got
to help everybody.

I realize how tired
my body is becoming

and how drained I am right now.

Justin: We have
an end goal to meet.

And we both need to be adults,

and we still have
to work together

when it comes down to it,
set our differences aside,

and if we're gonna have hope

of making it to the
extraction point, to day 21,

I need to get us some food.

[ hissing ]

oh, my god.

Look at that.

Whoa. That's close.

That's a boa.

I just walked up here,
and I look on the ground.

There's a 4 1/2-foot snake.

Narrator: The bahamian boa kills

by wrapping its powerful body
around its prey to suffocate it.

When the prey is dead,
the boa will swallow it whole.

I can eat him.

I have to kill this snake.
That's protein. That's life.

If we're gonna make it
to the extraction point,

we need this food.

[ hissing ]

this has been the most
treacherous walk I've been on

since I've been here.

Narrator: Before they began
their 21-day survival challenge,

dani and justin were both
given a primitive survival rating.

Dani has been resourceful in
her attempts at finding food...

Ha! I got you,
you little [bleep]

...Whereas justin's
hunting failures

have forced a wedge
between him and his partner.

Were you really prepared
coming into this situation?

Their overall performance
will be re-evaluated

at the end of the challenge,

and their psrs will be
adjusted accordingly.

justin: I've got to kill this snake if
we're gonna make it to the extraction point.

We need this food.

I actually killed something
with my bare hands and a stick.

Made me feel like I've
accomplished something today.

Dani!

Are you hungry? Yes.

Dani: [ chuckles ]
pretty good snake.

Dani: He is happier
when he's hunter-gatherer,

and if both of us
are in a good place,

it's a lot easier to be
around each other.

It's a relief to have him
back into justin mode.

Dani: This is a
good kill. Good job.

good enough for me,

and we'll have a bunch of
stuff underneath it and around it

to help.

So, you know, as long as we
got that platform, it's perfect.

Narrator: Filled with energy from their
first substantial meal in almost three weeks,

justin and dani
begin building a raft

that will get them to
their extraction point.

Going down here to get

a giant hunk of styrofoam
that I saw yesterday.

A bunch of litter and seat
cushions and everything.

Up and down the coast here.

There's our way out of here.

There are predators
out there. I've seen 'em.

Seen some sharks
cruising the reef,

but we'll just have to see who's
the bigger man, me or the shark.

There are reef sharks.
There are black tips.

There are makos because
the water is 6,000 foot deep.

Dani: Our raft is ready to
go. I'm ready to go home.

This has been an
incredible experience,

but I think it's
time to take off.

[ birds screeching ]

morning of day 21.

Dani: You know, there's
definitely sea urchins

and fire coral out there.

I'm not too keen on going
out in shark-infested waters

with bloody feet.

Narrator: To reach their
extraction, dani and justin

will have to paddle their
raft past the coral reef,

a breeding ground
for venomous stingrays

and the caribbean reef shark,

which has no instinctive
fear of humans.

If they can make it to deep
water two miles off shore,

they will be picked
up by a seaplane.

This is almost as much fun

as walking through the
swamp on the way to the beach.

Yeah, no kidding.

Ohh.

Oh.

Check your foot. You all right?

I can feel it.

I stepped on a sea urchin.

There's blood in the water.

What is that?

Holy [bleep]

dani: Oh, my god.
Is that a shark?

Whoa! A shark, right there.

Go.

Sharks have a highly
developed sense of smell.

They can detect
one drop of blood

in a million drops of water.

There's another one.

Justin! Kick faster.

[ plane approaching ]

yee-haw!

[ cheers ]

dani: That was the most amazing
relief I have ever felt in my life.

Justin: I wanted to test myself,

and, quite frankly, I
wanted to do something

that not many people in the
world are gonna be able to say,

"hey, I've done
that," and I've done it.

[ chuckles ]

dani and I had our
differences, but we found out

that two opposites could work
well together and be friends.

Whoo!

Dani: Looking back
on the experience,

I can say that I see

a level of empowerment
that I hadn't seen before.

I can say to myself,
"I have done that."

turns out, I'm capable of a lot.

21 days.

It's not a question of whether
or not women can handle this.

It was really more a question
of, "am I woman enough?"

narrator: After 21
days on andros island,

dani and justin,
although well-prepared,

have been mentally
and physically tested

more than they ever imagined.

Dani lost a total of 15 pounds

and justin 28 pounds.

Their psrs were reassessed

based on how they performed
individually and as a team.

Initially, justin's
primitive hunting skills

were not strong enough

to cope with an extreme
survival situation,

causing tension
between him and dani.

But by not letting his emotions
prevent him from stepping up,

he re-energized the team
when they needed it most.

Dani's carelessness
with the fire starter

jeopardized their
survival chances,

but making up for her
mistake by really pushing

her determination
and primitive skills,

she proved to be an
invaluable asset to the team.

This bring dani's psr up to
a near expert rating at 8.1,

and justin improves to
a solid intermediate 7.8,

proving once again the
incredible teamwork it takes

to survive naked and afraid.

This is real, raw survival.
