Southmoor, Chichester, Burnham,

Angmering, Worthing.

Coach number one of three.

Hey, you want a cookie?

Those are really good.

Thanks, they're for my FMP.

You're really good.

I like that one.

Well, I hope so.

I'm going to France soon to work.

In September.

Before we carry on this little chat, I'm Ellen.

I'm Sam.

Yeah, I'm going to France in September.

That's a long away, like a whole country.

A whole different country.

Yeah, but it's really good for like art

and illustration and stuff.

And like I'm doing some work experience

for this studio in Paris.

They saw my illustration.

They want me to do some advertising work

for like gigs and theater work.

Maybe even film posters.

Is that what you want to do after this?

Like do art.

Like after France.

Yeah, well, I enjoy it, and there's a lot of money

to be made and stuff, so.

You going to uni?

No, I haven't really thought of college.

You're one of those unlucky people that don't know

what they want to do with their lives.

Yeah, I guess so.

Don't you have like a love or a passion for anything?

Um, I play guitar a lot.

I don't think it's really like a career laid out for me.

You never know.

People make a load of money doing stuff like that.

You could make millions.

I'm not that good though.

I'm sure you are.

Thanks.

So what do you think of this one?

Um, I don't know, I'm not really an art critic.

What is it?

Sorry.

Well, it's clearly a painting, isn't it?

Yeah, I see it now.

It's my abstract piece.

What feeling do you think it is?

That's the real test.

Um, not really an art critic.

Well, try and guess.

Don't know.

Looks kind of playful and happy.

I see.

You could be right.

You think?

Why do you think playful and happy?

It's colors and big shapes.

You get the train to Portchester, right?

- Do you live there? - Yeah.

I'm going to see my aunt in Portchester later

after I get my car from its MAT.

I could give you a lift if you want.

Yeah, that would be good.

What time do you finish?

Five.

Meet me back here at five?

Yeah, sure.

Okay, great, see you later.

Okay.

Sam.

- Hi. - Hi, how are you?

I'm okay.

My lecture can't get down from London.

So we're in directed study,

which basically means do whatever you want.

So it's a perfect time to hang out with people.

Yeah, sometimes we're all boring.

Sit around and smoke.

Best come see me now then.

Of course I shall.

What's Luby?

That's my nickname.

Don't really know what it means, but it's nice though.

I see.

It started in school, and it just kind of stuck.

Stick with Ellen, it's a pretty name.

Thank you.

You like Slinkies?

I did a project on them.

My idea was that I could just take photos of them

and just play with them all day, but I had to do like

loads of analysis and technical stuff.

What's technical about a Slinky?

Well, like its size and its aesthetic qualities

and timing how fast it takes to go down the stairs.

It's a spring of wire, that's it.

Exactly, that's exactly what I wrote in my journal,

which is why it was only two pages long.

But my lecture just reads far too deep into things.

I see.

That's useless.

Least you know everything about Slinkies now.

Did you know that the Americans used Slinkies

as communications aerials during the Vietnam War?

What an utterly useless fact.

Yeah, but for those two days,

I knew everything there was to know about them.

This is just like my notes on how to develop

like films and stuff.

Well, you basically just have to go and stand in a dark room

for ages by yourself and then lock the door.

Pretty scary.

And then I had to my art project,

which is to document my day in photos.

Which, you know, is a bit boring.

And then just like my notes on them and stuff.

My inspiration and things.

And then just production stills and stuff.

It's a lot of work.

Look how much work it is.

And here is Reynolds Castle.

Lovely.

Don't think anyone's home.

Awesome.

Shush, you.

Right, don't judge me on my house, okay?

Okay, I won't.

Promise you won't laugh?

I promise, I solemnly swear.

- You're a geek. - You're a geek.

Okay, ready to see my room?

I'm ready.

You sure?

Yes, I'm perfectly sure.

Voila.

Sleep time.

Must be the best week ever.

Just like, I don't know, I can't explain it.

I just feel happy.

Oh God, I sound really gay.

Like remember when you gave me your coat on Wednesday?

Yeah.

Well, when I was wearing it, I got like the smell of you.

And I got super excited because I thought you were

in the room, and I was all on edge waiting for you

to come around the corner.

And then I got disappointed when you didn't turn up.

Just, for me, I've never felt that before.

That excitement.

You like my shirt?

It's a security thing.

I see.

Don't worry, it just makes me feel closer.

So what do you want to do then?

I don't know.

No, I mean like us.

I just, you know, like you.

You know that.

Hm, is that right?

Now I'm gonna leave.

No, no, don't.

I'll miss you too much.

So what are you asking me?

Well, maybe we could be a thing.

Like me and you.

You want to be my girlfriend?

Now that I asked I think you have to.

How's that?

I don't know, let me think.

Yes.

Here you go.

Thanks.

You gonna stay for dinner too?

Please!

Oh yeah, yeah.

All right, all right, let's do that.

- Okay, I'll cook. - Stop it, stop it.

I'll cook, I'll cook.

Like cooking, do you?

Well, not really.

But I've been learning for France,

so I cook quite a bit now.

What are you gonna cook?

Calzone.

Never heard of it.

Well, it's basically a pizza folded in half

with meatballs in the middle and stuff.

Actually sounds awful.

That's what I thought when I first had it,

but it's actually amazing.

Touche.

Are you gonna help me cook,

or are you just gonna stand there?

Yes, Mum, sorry.

Don't call me Mum.

Sorry, Mum.

Oh for God's sake.

All right, you get a pizza out the freezer,

and I'll get the rest.

- Okay. - Okay?

Am I gettin' it out?

Mhm.

Wow, oh God.

Don't like ovens.

Heat and fire, little scary.

- Looks lovely. - Mm.

Ready to eat?

Plates or something?

In there.

More drinks?

Yeah.

Cider and black it is then.

No, they're like really hard to play.

Sway's not really that hard to play.

That's pretty easy, but like...

I do love The Kooks.

Yeah, it's like really lots of upper strokes

and stuff and muting.

Oh, you still owe me a song.

I will like next time there's a guitar around.

Well, I just so happen to have a guitar upstairs.

An electric one.

So you have to play me a song now.

Um...

Go on, just a quick one.

All right.

Magic.

Play a song.

All right, all right, all right, all right.

What do you want me to play?

I don't know.

Do you write any of your own stuff?

Yeah, but too shy to sing.

Then just play it.

Um, I don't know what to play.

Just play one of yours.

Um, all right.

Okay.

Morning.

Morning.

You slept like a baby.

Felt so snug with you in bed last night with me.

I didn't want to fall asleep.

Yeah, best I slept in months.

What's that?

Um, I made you like breakfast.

Is that breakfast?

You made me breakfast in bed?

Yeah, I washed up and stuff as well, so.

Oh my God, no one's ever done that for me before.

That's so romantic.

It's only bacon and eggs.

It's all I could find, sorry.

It's all right.

You didn't do anything for yourself?

No, I have like a bad stomach.

I get pains in my stomach if I eat too early.

Why?

I don't know.

It's like happened since I was little.

Doctors can't figure out what it is.

So like 80% of the time, I've got like bad stomach.

Oh my God.

No, it's all right now.

I've lived with it, so I've adapted.

Does that bother you or something?

No, just makes me want to look after you more.

So what do you want to do today?

I don't know.

It's like summer holidays, isn't it?

So we don't have to go to college or anything.

So bum around town?

Yeah, we could go to Southampton, or we could

just bum around here and have a lazy day in our PJs.

Or we could do a bit of both.

We could like, well, I have to go home.

So I could go home.

We could go out now, and I'll go home later tonight.

Or I could go home now and get some more stuff

and then come back.

- Yeah, yeah - Do both things, yeah?

Yeah, stay over again.

Just move in.

Okay, so I'll go get my stuff and stuff.

- So eat up. - Okay.

And I shall go get my stuff.

All right, gimme a text to let me know when you're coming

- over so I can get ready. - Yeah.

I'll get the 20 past 10 train.

- Okay. - Okay, bye.

Sam!

- Eat your bacon. - I will.

Read much, Sam?

Not really.

Like film books and stuff, but...

Oh, Thompson.

Hunter S. Thompson?

Never heard of him.

Oh my God, he's amazing.

He invented like all the gonzo journalism.

Look, he wrote Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I didn't know that was a book

until about 10 seconds ago.

You're missing out, Sam.

Good?

Good isn't even the word.

It's a drug-induced, mental time.

It's just awesome.

Sounds interesting.

It really is.

Johnny Depp played him in the Vegas movie.

I'll have to look out for it next time.

Yeah, maybe.

Tell me what it is.

Keep your eyes closed.

I am.

- Keep your eyes closed. - I am.

Keep your eyes closed.

Keep your eyes closed.

Stay there, don't move.

Okay.

- Keep your eyes closed. - Okay.

Open your card.

You know that old nickname.

Your nickname, Luby.

This is my present.

You can't laugh.

You gotta promise not to laugh.

I promise I won't laugh.

Pinky promise.

Pinky promise I won't laugh.

Okay, shh.

♫ Miss Luby stands

♫ Holds me at her hands

♫ Pulls me from the darkness of my mind

♫ Miss Luby keeps

♫ Keeps me safe and warm

♫ Cradles me to sleep every night

♫ She's ponderous

♫ Heaven here on Earth

♫ Most beautiful angel I've seen

♫ Miss, Miss leave

♫ Never leave my side

♫ Leave me and keep me at home

♫ Just remember

♫ I love you

♫ Miss Luby

There's something I need to tell you though.

That wasn't my first time.

What do you mean?

Well, it was like my first time thinking straight

with someone who meant something to me.

Don't judge me for this, all right?

- Promise? - Promise.

I lost mine a few days before we met to this guy

I used to date.

Sam?

No.

Didn't that guy meaning anything to you?

No, no, it was a horrible mistake.

I'm really sorry, Sam.

All right, technically, like yeah,

you lost it to that guy,

but in my eyes last night you were a virgin.

So you don't think any different of me?

No, of course not, I love you.

What did you say?

I said it doesn't bother me.

No, you said you love me.

Did you mean it?

Course I do.

I love you too, Sam.

I love you.

No, no, no, no, no, come on.

No.

I want to see the wonders of Brighton.

- Okay. - Come on.

Thank you.

Oh, better lock it.

So that's your first day in Brighton with me.

It's my first day like anywhere else, unfortunately.

Yeah, well anyway, what did you think?

Um...

Oi, that's my hometown you're talking about.

What's wrong with it?

It's nice.

I like it a lot, but it's just really hustly-bustly.

And like it's really big.

I'm not used to that at all.

It was great when I used to live here.

My mum used to take me to the lanes all the time.

I'd like to say you have me,

but that's a pretty bad replacement.

You make it easier though.

Just the best thing that's ever happened to me, aren't you?

I try my best.

Right.

I'm not the best at explaining how I feel,

but I'm gonna say something now.

And you're not allowed to interrupt me,

'cause otherwise I won't finish.

- Okay. - Okay.

I'm just, like I said,

I'm not very good at explaining how I feel.

But I just wanted you to know

that you mean everything to me.

And I love you without a doubt.

And I just imagine any more time without you.

So please don't ever leave, Sam.

I'm in this forever.

You have no idea the shit you've pulled me out of.

Why are you shaking, hun?

I'm scared.

Of what?

How much I love you.

I love you too.

Remember what I said last night.

Don't need to go to France anymore.

I'm staying with you.

How long we have left?

A month.

Open my present.

Hope you like it.

I love it, Sam, I love it.

Right.

This is mine.

To Sam.

Love, Ellen.

Bubble wrap.

I had to edit that one down because it was landscape.

So I had to crop it.

I love it.

Thank you.

Is this for me too?

Yeah, pass it.

I don't know.

On our last night,

would it feel more special if I read it to you?

Yeah.

Okay.

Sam, this is the end of my little Brighton speech.

I hate saying my feelings out loud.

I hate having all eyes on me for anything.

It makes me feel silly, so I'll just read it instead.

I asked myself what it is about you that makes me love you.

And the reason I love you is because you're Sam Andrews.

You're ginger, tall, wear sunglasses all the time,

and smoke 20 a day.

Although recently you've quit smoking.

I know I don't say it enough,

but I do truly and deeply love you,

so much it hurts sometimes.

But it feels so good that I don't want it to stop.

I hate to think of my life without you.

I don't want to imagine it or even think about it.

I hate to think how fast October 1st is coming up.

And I hate the fact that I'm leaving you behind.

But remember, if you miss me,

then just keep counting down the days.

I have a calendar with the days I'm back home, Sam,

so I know exactly when we'll be together again.

When I'm with you, it feels like nothing else matters

and I'm the most important girl in the world.

You make me feel like a queen.

When we stayed in Brighton, I felt so proud knowing that

I had the best guy with me and he loved me for who I am.

I love the way you look at me and the way I can just sense

you love me.

It makes me feel special.

I never want us to stop.

I'm in this forever.

I love you with all my heart.

If you ever miss me that much, read this note,

and remember my present to you,

and know I'll be back in your arms soon.

I love you Sam Andrews, Ellen.

Sam, what's wrong?

Oi.

I don't want you to go.

I'm sorry, Sam.

'Cause I know when you go,

I'm gonna be like lost.

Like a little lost puppy.

And I won't know what to do without you.

I'll be home in no time.

Just let's remember a few things, okay?

I love you.

I love you too.

I carry your heart in mine.

I can never forget you, and I never will.

You're my heart and my world, and you're irreplaceable.

So just remember, I'll be back in 93 days, okay?

Just count down the days, and I will too, okay?

I love you.

I love you too.

Please don't leave.

I need you.

Don't go.

Please, don't go.

Sam, I can't.

But you love me.

That's not a good enough reason to stay for me.

I'm sorry.

Please, don't go, please.

Sam.

Please, you love me.

Please say.

Don't go.

Please, don't go.

What kind of a relationship would it be

if you forced me to stay?

But you love me.

Please, I'm sorry.

Please just stay, I need you.

That's it, Sam.

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry I left.

I missed you.

Will you ever forgive me?

Yeah, just don't leave me again.

I promise I won't.

Promise.

Promise.

I missed you so much.

I missed you more.

I miss you.

Come back.

Please, come back.
