He's dead.

What?

He's dead?

He may be linked to the Sangbo case.

I wanted to interrogate him.

I didn't see this coming.

He was silenced.

He is a major criminal for Mr. Wei.

How did he die?

I don't know.

The coroner will find out.

The criminal died in the Jingzhao Administration.

But this has nothing to do with me.

Sir. I'll assist you with the investigation.

My departments will do as you order.

A county magistrate died in the cell.

It was an accident, which has nothing to do with you.

Thank you.

Not at all.

Caiwei told me you did me a favor yesterday at the Ministry of Justice.

No problem.

It's not a problem for me.

In that case, I'll take my leave.

Take care, sir.

Thank you for coming. I will see you out.

[Great Admiration]

Thank you for coming.

Don't mention it.

I did not help much.

So, the poems…

You'll have what you want.

Just now I saw you burning a page of a book.

No offense, but I've never seen such powerful magic.

May I ask how it works?

This is a magic book.

It contains my academy's magic tricks.

This is a treasure.

If you ignite one page of it,

you will use the magic power of this page.

I see.

Forgive my ignorance.

However, I have to give you poems later.

This case is urgent. My cultivation is weak.

I'm afraid I can't compose poetry for a long time.

Let me give you a magic book to help you with that.

That would be great.

So, the poetry…

Sure, you'll have it.

See you, sir.

Chun.

I heard the county magistrate died in prison.

What did Chen Hanguang say?

Take a look at the autopsy report.

No external injuries, not poisoned.

So, he died without a reason?

Caiwei questioned the night-duty clerks and jailers

and found nothing suspicious.

It's confirmed the county magistrate died in his sleep that night.

He was murdered in his dream?

What comes to your mind?

I heard the Yin God of the Three Sects can do this.

Three Sects?

If it is the Three Sects,

Jinlian should have heard something.

Besides,

there is another group.

Wizard.

Wizard?

Follow me.

Have you heard of the Wizard Cult?

I've heard it from Pingzhi.

They are divine beings beyond any rank.

Wizard Cult was founded by him?

The Wizard God is a deity commonly worshipped by the Northern states.

The Wizard Cult holds supreme power in the North,

just like the Heaven Cult in the West.

Fifteen years ago,

the chieftain of Yunzhou clashed with the Wizard Cult.

Overnight, 2,000 elite soldiers died in the barracks.

There were no wounds on their bodies.

All passed away in their sleep.

In the end, even the chieftain never woke up

After that, Yunzhou became a land without a master.

Banditry ran rampant.

Calamities occurred one after another.

According to the information from the source,

it is likely that it has become a stronghold of the Wizard Cult in Dafeng.

If this matter is connected with Yunzhou,

the case will become complicated.

I always feel

that the end of the Year of Gengzi will be the start of a great disaster.

Wait.

You confused me.

Let's just focus on the case.

Ningyan, where are you going?

To capture Zhou Chixiong.

[Yunzhou Commandery]

Yang Gong has entered the city.

Got it.

What should we do?

[Yang Chuannan, Commander of Yunzhou]

Why?

[Li Miaozhen, fourth rank of Heaven Sect] You know why.

With his arrival, you must hand over the power.

Since it is the rule,

I'll follow it.

Do you really not understand?

The emperor sent Yang Gong to Qingzhou to be the governor.

He fears that you wield too much power. So he sent someone to balance it out.

After all, if Qingzhou and Yunzhou are jointly governed,

the governor of Qingzhou will hold the actual power over Yunzhou.

I heard Yang Gong was from Yunlu Academy.

He took a poem from a student before taking office.

Most likely, he's a fame-seeking man, coming here for politics.

Dafeng only produces pests.

What do you want to do?

Just say the word, and I'll kill him.

This requires careful deliberation.

I can't stand seeing you act so cowardly.

Emperor Yuanjing is so mean.

Miaozhen.

What? I'm not on the imperial payroll.

Heroine Feiyan.

You suppressed bandits

and punished villainous people to maintain peace in Yunzhou.

I really appreciate it.

However, rules are rules.

After all, I'm a servant of the imperial court.

Mind your language.

Where are you going?

I feel terrible in this room. I can't stay any longer.

- General Li. - What is it?

Recently, the bandits have a new leader.

Lately, there's been an increase in robberies. It's rampant.

Continue to gather information.

Wait for the right moment to attack the bandits with my men.

- Yes. - Go then.

Let's go.

Master, you came out so soon.

[Su Su, Heaven Sect]

I'm not happy.

Look, your old problem acted up again.

We're surrounded by the mountains. Careful about getting cold.

[Cold Charm]

Got it.

It's because of Yang Chuannan?

Officials are just troublesome.

Nominally, you're the cavalry general he hired.

In fact, you did it all for your friendship.

If he upsets you, just ignore him.

Yet in Yunzhou,

he's the only official who supports us to suppress bandits.

Anyone, Emperor Yuanjing is to blame.

Everyone. There's another incident in the Capital City.

What happened? Is Emperor Yuanjing dead?

The entire inner and outer city has been under lockdown.

No one is allowed to enter or leave.

I figured something must have happened.

Number One. Have you heard any news?

Interesting.

Jinlian actually didn't ask me, a Guardian

but directly asked number One.

There was an explosion at Sangbo Lake.

The Yongzhen Mountain River Temple has been destroyed.

The thing sealed in Sangbo vanished without a trace.

Number Three, do you have any clues?

How coincidental.

The academy, through certain channels, has obtained some information.

I've roughly sorted out the case.

Kui tribe? That's impossible.

How did they destroy Sangbo?

Upon investigation, they obtained saltpeter from Dahuang Mountain.

They processed the saltpeter into gunpowder

and transported it into the inner city by Zhou Chixiong

to blow up Sangbo.

After the explosion, Zhou Chixiong fled with his family.

[One] So it's a dead end.

Not really.

In my opinion, the imperial court will soon issue a warrant.

Zhou Chixiong should either leave Dafeng or hide in a safe place.

Where do you think he would hide?

It's obvious. It must be Yunzhou.

Number Two. You are powerful in Yunzhou.

[One] Can you help me investigate Zhou Chixiong?

Well done.

It seems the number One thinks

Number Two is more reliable than officials.

I refuse to help you.

[One] I'll provide a reward.

No, you're from the imperial court. I refuse to help you.

[One]

This is not good. If Number Two doesn't help,

how will we catch Zhou Chixiong in such a vast place?

Number Two. You owed me one because of number Six. Does it still count?

Of course, it does. I always mean what I say.

Alright, keep an eye out for Zhou Chixiong in Yunzhou.

Then you won't owe me.

So, number One, this time you owe me one.

What do you two think?

- Okay. - Okay.

[Fifteen years ago, Wizard Cult]

Mr. Wei, Xu Qi'an has arrived.

Mr. Wei.

Yesterday, I happened to see the progress of your work.

Indeed, you're doing a good job.

Mr. Wei, you're busy with official duties.

I'm afraid of causing you trouble.

The imperial court has issued a warrant for Zhou Chixiong.

[Zhou Chixiong, Centurion of Imperial Guards]

However, it's difficult to find him within half a month.

Is there another approach?

I assume Zhou Chixiong is likely to have fled to Yunzhou.

Therefore, I've asked Number Two, who is in Yunzhou, to apprehend him.

Yunzhou?

It's a solution.

But Yunzhou is more complicated than you think.

It'll take a while.

That is true.

Have you tried any magic tools?

Magic tools?

Zhou Chixiong's presence has been concealed.

Even the warlock of the Bureau of Astronomy can't find him.

This indicates two things.

First, the spell caster's level is too high.

Second, he must have used a magic tool to hide himself.

This is Zhou Chixiong's information. Take a look

He is only 8th-rank.

Turns out Mr. Wei has been helping me in secret.

♫ Thoughts linger, unable to disperse ♫

♫ I concealed my sorrows ♫

♫ My thin clothes took away a bit of warmth by my side ♫

♫ Took away ♫

♫ A bit of warmth by my side ♫

♫ Who will accompany me ♫

Mr. Wei.

What's it?

♫ Casting down my eyes, I sigh alone ♫

I wanted to report to you

in the first place. However…

It's alright.

♫ With you, what's there to fear ♫

I am also wary of those

who have ordered my death.

♫ Fully aware of the world's misery and cold ♫

♫ Only wish to grant you peace ♫

♫ Joy and sorrow never intertwine ♫

♫ Flowers fall from above ♫

♫ The fragrance of sleeves ♫

♫ I dedicate my life to you ♫

Mr. Wei, the carriage is ready.

I'm going to the palace.

Xu Qi'an.

You will come with me.

I leave the officialdom and venture outside?

Exactly.

Your personality isn't suited for the officialdom.

The outside world is where you belong.

Without the Sangbo case,

you would already have left the Capital City under my arrangement.

If you can't solve this case,

you will serve as a covert contact for the Guardians.

You can become the blade in my hand,

a blade that must be in the dark.

How is it?

Do you feel aggrieved?

As long as I can live, let alone a blade, I am willing to be anything.

It's not easy to be a contact.

You will have to hide your true identity

and stay away from your family.

What's worse,

your death must be unnoticed.

I'm not yet ready to venture outside.

I want to try my best to find out the truth.

You seem easygoing on the outside but strict on the inside.

And you're a little impulsive.

While I appreciate this aspect of you,

I also don't like it.

I know

the Guardian Yamen has problems.

I'm very clear about it.

That's what human nature might be.

Light and darkness intertwine.

How many people like Li Yuchun are there?

If the Guardians were all like him,

how could they manage the officials?

I understand.

But if I see it with my own eyes,

I can't tolerate it.

Old problems.

It takes time to fix them.

One must think twice

before acting in the officialdom.

You must know there is no perfect officialdom.

Instead of acting rashly,

it would be better o proceed with caution

and tackle them one by one.

Understood.

[Imperial Palace]

Greetings, Mr. Wei.

Greetings.

This is Xu Qi'an, the chief officer of the Sangbo case.

May I trouble you to take him to see Princess Huaiqing?

No problem.

Princess Huaiqing?

The Wenyuan Library has dossiers about magic tools.

Let Princess Huaiqing take you to see them.

Yes.

There will be a poetry gathering today. Did you sleep well last night?

Yes, I did.

Usually, when we stand by the lake, the spirit loong will show up.

What's wrong today?

I've been here for a while.

Yet it never appeared.

Here's the thing.

Since the ceremony at Sangbo,

the spirit loong seems to have been disturbed.

On the day of the ceremony, it let out a long howl over the lake

and then went to the bottom of the lake.

No matter what Father did, it refused to show up

and get close to the royal family.

Without the spirit loong,

why choose this location for today's poem gathering?

It's far from me.

Bums me out.

Have you memorized it all?

Don't worry.

I've memorized the poems

and the stories behind them.

Today, I'll show off and outdo Huaiqing.

Greetings, princes, princesses.

The grand poetry event is imminent.

We're rehearsing here in advance today.

Thank you for coming all the way from the Imperial Academy.

Not at all.

I wish to witness the talent of the royal family.

So, you're Princess Huaiqing's personal eunuch.

How come I've never seen you before?

I've been working in the inner palace

and seldom appearing in public.

However, I take care of the princess's matters,

big and small, within the palace.

Honestly, I have one thing to confirm.

Aren't you Princess Lin'an's…

What?

I mean

Princess Lin'an thinks highly of you.

Meanwhile, you're close to Princess Huaiqing.

Aren't you afraid Princess Lin'an will find out?

I don't care if she knows.

Ningyan. You are very bold.

But how will you explain to Princess Lin'an?

I explain to her?

Ridiculous.

Why do I need to explain to her?

I know Lin'an wants to win me over.

But I know what I want.

I am devoted to Princess Huaiqing.

Well, Lin'an should be well aware of it.

Please. I admire you very much, sir.

I'm flattered.

Moon.

In the first round, you compose with the given topic.

Everyone must use the word "moon" as the theme.

Take turns in the game.

Whoever fails will drink.

Is there anyone

who will lead off?

Allow me to give it a try.

Crows are crying as the moon sets.

Frost cools the weather.

Trees and lights on fishing boats

stay together on the river.

Good.

Excellent lines.

Your Highness.

Several months later,

I should see you differently.

Eunuch.

What's going on?

Here's the thing.

Princes and princesses are studying poetry here

for the coming grand poetry event.

Princess Huaiqing has prepared for this for a long time.

If all I have done is benefit to her,

I'll be content.

Is that the kept man?

Please wait a moment.

Don't gossip.

Mind your tongue.

Eunuch, we're sorry.

We saw Mr. Xu for the first time.

We couldn't help watching him.

So I'm famous in the palace.

Stop looking at him.

Have you never seen a man?

Yes, we have.

However, we've never seen a kept man.

No. He's Princess Lin'an's kept man.

Lin'an is spreading rumors that I'm a kept man.

Could she be trying to drive a wedge between me and Princess Huaiqing?

I'm afraid Princess Huaiqing has heard of it.

No.

I must make Lin'an give up.

The water is rippling in the mist,

reflecting the sky and clouds.

Xiaogang.

Good poem.

This poem

- sounds majestic. - Indeed.

- Good. - Good.

- Good poem. - Continue.

Endless years stretch on and on.

The green waters flow endlessly.

Come on. Do I have to kneel before you?

No.

Mr. Xu, how come you're here?

I came with Mr. Wei to find Princess Huaiqing for the case.

Really?

Don't worry about that for now.

How is the princess?

So far, she's been fine.

Thanks to your poems.

No, I'm not talking about the poem gathering.

Don't you know?

Now…

It's being spread all over the palace that I'm the Princess Lin'an's…

I am the Princess Lin'an's kept man.

This is purely baseless.

I won't do such a thing. Princess Lin'an must be…

Princess Lin'an must be sowing discord.

Such a petty trick.

Princess Huaiqing won't fall for it.

That's good. I thought…

Rest assured, the princess doesn't blame you at all.

She understands and sympathizes with you.

She believes that you are a loyal man.

The princess is truly wise.

Your Highness.

It's your turn now.

I'll give it a try.

Your Highness.

A flock of crows crosses the boundary to drink from the water.

Next spring, the swallows return, mistaking strangers for kin.

What's going on? Does she not want to see me?

The princess is far away from you. I'm afraid she didn't see you.

- She saw me. - She didn't.

- We made eye contact. - She didn't see you.

- Xiaogang, listen to me. - Get out of here.

Xiaogang, I've just arrived.

She believed the rumors, Xiaogang?

The princess will come back to you.

You explain it to her later.

What brought him here?

He's here for official business.

But don't worry. I've already sent him away.

It's lucky we found out early.

Xu Qi'an seems to be a strong adversary.

Don't you think Mr. Wei likes him too much?

How long did it take you to ride with Mr. Wei?

Three years.

I did better. It took me one year and four months.

However, Xu Qi'an has been a Guardian for at most three months.

This isn't surprising. Mr. Wei likes his temperament.

Mr. Wei also likes Li Yuchun's temperament.

Wait.

There must be another reason.

Where is Xu Qi'an from?

What? You want a kinship with Mr. Wei?

Tell me.

Say it.

Xu Qi'an is from the Capital City, but Mr. Wei is not.

They're not from the same place.

Is that true?

Yeah, it is.

Aren't you tired?

Here your man is.

Yan.

Guys, my boss is here. You can put me down now.

I mean it.

Thank you.

Thank you. Guys, go back.

You may go back.

Xu Qi'an.

You're from the Capital City, right?

Are you?

I guess so.

Have you been to the Wenyuan Library?

Not yet.

Have you seen Princess Huaiqing?

Yes, I think so.

Then why didn't you go to Wenyuan Library?

What are you doing out here?

I don't know what I am doing out here either.

I just met the princess and had a couple of words with her.

And then you saw what happened.

They carried me out.

I'm telling you,

turnabout is fair play.

Don't think you are a great catch. Not everyone likes you.

Why are you being sarcastic?

Ningyan.

Eunuch.

Ningyan.

Princess Huaiqing is looking for you.

Lead the way.

Your Highness. It's your turn.

The seventh word in the verse must be related to the water.

This is not easy.

What's wrong?

Xu Qi'an didn't give me any poems about water.

What should you do?

Hey. I think she will lose this time.

Currently, amongst all present here,

only Huaiqing hasn't been punished with a drink.

She's a top-talented lady in Dafeng.

Fill it up for the princess.

- Come on. - Lin'an is waiting.

Isn't that right?

Come on, drink.

Yes, drink.

When I got drunk, I didn't realize the stars made shadows in the water.

I thought I was sleeping on the river of stars.

How come you…

When I got drunk, I didn't realize the stars made shadows in the water.

I thought I was sleeping on the river of stars.

Good poem.

Indeed, this poem is brilliant and sounds implicit.

Dare I ask who you are?

I am Xu Qi'an.

I'm a guest scholar for Princess Huaiqing.

Xu Qi'an? His name sounds familiar.

Isn't he Lin'an's kept man?

I'm here for you, Your Highness.

I'm confused.

Mr. Xu. Which princess's guest scholar are you?

Sir.

It's hard to find a good friend in life.

I'm honored to have earned the favor of two princesses.

I'm so grateful to both of you.

However, a loyal official does not serve two masters.

Although I am a nobody,

I have my own principles.

Princess Huaiqing. You helped me a lot.

Without you, I would accomplish nothing,

be bullied by others, and couldn't fight back.

Princess Lin'an.

As a princess, you understand my heartfelt desire

to repay Huaiqing's kindness.

As for your offer,

I feel flattered,

but I have to decline.

I hope you will be magnanimous and not impose difficulties on others.

Your Highness, I'm not a kept man.

Can you let bygones be bygones and trust me again?

I…

You still don't believe me?

Right now, I swear

I'll spare no effort to work for you

and remain loyal only to you in my life.

Well…

What's wrong?

You made a mistake.

Enough.

Princess Huaiqing is over there.

Your Highness, your trick is somewhat childish.

- Your Highness. - Lin'an.

Get a physician.

- Your Highness. - Get a physician.

Come on.

No need to get a physician.

Get someone from the Bureau of Astronomy.

Lin'an fainted at the Bureau of Astronomy before.

They have the proper medicine.

Yes, that's true.

It's alright now.

Let's go to the Bureau of Astronomy.

Get a physician.

No worries.

He will wake up soon.

Dismissed.

- Come to my place. - Sir, join us.

Let's go.

They look happy.

They are talking.

I just found out about all this.

That's the whole story.

I have offended you.

Please forgive me, Your Highness.

The weather is good.

Take a walk with me.

Yes.

- Why are they leaving? - I don't know.

- Where are they going? - I don't know.

Yesterday, the Lingbao Pavilion created some pills.

I will have someone send you one.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Exchange one pill for one chess piece of yours.

That's not too much, is it?

Not at all.

Your camp is a bit disordered.

I will help you tidy it up.

Good for you.

Over these years,

the one I've relied on the most has been you, Wei Yuan.

I often think

if you had not entered the palace

and had taken the imperial examinations,

would I have had one more minister in the court?

And I wouldn't have to worry about all those trivial matters.

Your Majesty.

Am I not serving Your Majesty?

Wrong.

Did you not see it?

There is an ambush here.

I made a mistake.

I should improve my skills in chess.

If you don't eliminate it, there will be future troubles.

Where are you with the Sangbo case?

The dossiers submitted by the yamen and the Ministry of Justice are a mess.

I remember the man in charge of the case was a criminal.

A Bronze Gong with the surname Xu?

Sure. His name is Xu Qi'an.

He does have something.

The cases of Liu Han and Zhou Chixiong were investigated by him.

The source of the gunpowder was also found out by him.

I have heard a little about it.

This man can think clearly.

He is an expert at solving cases.

Did he find out anything?

Yes, he found something.

The magistrate of Taikang County

was found dead yesterday morning in the yamen's dungeon.

Mr. Chen has already reported this to me.

The magistrate died a natural death.

No external injuries.

No poisoning.

There were not even any other external means such as suffocation.

If the Yin God of Three Sects isn't behind it,

it would be the wizard in the North.

So, how is the progress?

Your Highness.

Zhou Chixiong has eluded the Qi Observation Technique

and has fled the Capital City.

He must have used some magic tool.

Therefore, I want to use it as a breakthrough.

By tracing the whereabouts of the magic tool…

I'm already aware of this.

What else? Surely you have found out more than this.

What else you would like to know?

I've reviewed your case records.

You discovered the Sealing Formation of the Bureau of Astronomy in Sangbo Lake.

And its stone pillars were engraved with Heaven Domain scripts.

Have you continued your investigation into this matter?

Your Highness.

Mr. Wei once instructed me not to investigate it.

I dare not disobey him.

Why did the Kui tribe destroy the Yongzhen Mountain River Temple?

It's suspicious.

And it's another entry point.

Beneath the Yongzhen Mountain River Temple

indeed lies a terrifying man or item.

Only my Father knows what it is.

Mr. Wei doesn't allow you to investigate because he's protecting you.

She even knows this.

Continue with your deduction.

Zhou Chixiong is just an Eighth-Rank Warrior.

Yet he could carry out such a shocking plan

and escape with the help of a magic tool.

I suspect that someone in the court is secretly protecting him.

And this person is likely to be associated with the Dahuang Mountain saltpeter case

as well as with the tax silver case.

Perhaps a huge organization is behind this.

And they aim…

You mean…

I dare not speculate recklessly.

But this matter involves the Kui tribe

and the sealed thing at the bottom of the lake.

It's definitely not just a matter of seeking power and profit.

A powerful man in the imperial court.

A man who can secretly ally with the Kui tribe.
