like how do they make samurai swords

I have no idea but it's fascinating

that's where they do it by hand

we're going to a samurai themed restaurant

I reached out to hodiyoshi the third

right

he's third generation Japanese style tattoo artist

he goes way back he's in the legendary category

I'm used to just some like kid in a random tattoo shop

not a legendary tattoo artist

I was really

hell bent on getting a traditional Japanese tattoo

and so when I heard that Horiyoshi

the 3rd could actually be tattoo

Horiyoshi the third is a person

he is the tattooist you wanna do the bamboo style

that is more traditional it's more painful

hmm I'm I'm totally fine with that

I'm not too sure about how he feels about the bamboo

oh really

I'm not into pain that much yeah

ha ha ha ha and Tibori is

when they take like a long bamboo or metal stick

it almost looks like a paintbrush

but he lines it up right here

almost like a pool cue and he just goes like that

that just talking about in the camp right over here

was that about samurai swords

when I seen this show on the TV

about the traditional samurai sword makers

was fascinating though

they did it you know

are these traditional sword makers still around indeed

we wanna look at some menu get some food right yeah

I love Japanese food

there's this lady with a whole plate full of food

I was so wiped out after the show

so here's what I know a Japanese sword

or katana is among

the finest cutting weapons in world military history

it's also the weapon of choice for the samurai

the art of sword making goes back to the 1st century

and if an old sword has been well maintained

you will forever see the beautiful

engraving on the blade

identifying the owner and the signature of the maker

the oldest swords made by the most famous artists

can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars

the former imperial capital of Japan

to get a taste of ancient Japanese culture

our first stop

one of the most exclusive tea houses in the city

so this is it

wow it's so unassuming I need to go for a piss

so here's the deal in Japan

a tea house is like a cool club

but

instead of screaming at the bartender to get noticed

you get your own servers called geisha

in a tradition dating back to the 1700s

the geisha sing dance

chat you up and serve you tea and food oh

and the customers are mostly men

I'm slightly nervous being in here

it's like having high tea with the royals

the tea house is not for tourists

I'm really excited about this because

I'm getting tattooed by Horiyoshi the third

Horiyoshi is an incredibly famous well respected

almost legendary tattoo artist here in Japan

and he's all but retired he's currently only finishing

bodysuits and

sleeves and things like that he's been working on so get a to get a new piece

from him is it just doesn't happen anymore

so it's gonna be a huge tick for me and

most likely the highlight of this trip

and it's gonna be with me forever

hi well I woke up this morning

about 6:00 and I thought I want a

cup of great coffee so I get on the phone

and I had the worst

time trying to explain to this dimp on the phone

what I wanted I was

I started by saying I wanted a coffee

a pot a coffee pot for about six cups

so I'll get this turned up

6 it was six parts of coffee

six large cups and six glasses of ice water

and guess what no spoon

before our tattoo appointment with Hottie Oshi

we wanted to stop by his personal museum

and learn more about the history of tattooing in Japan

this is Horiyoshi San's wife

she runs the tattoo museum

pleasure

don't knock over anything that's like 1,000 years old

I mean

there's such a rich history of tattooing in Japan

it's awesome I love it

I think it's so cool yeah

yeah so how long have you been tattooing

there's been evidence from like 5,000 BC wow

BC they found cavemen with tattoos dead

they dug someone out of the ice

so here's some interesting facts I found on the web

in Japan when the emperor shut down the samurai

and made them burn their armor

many warriors got tattooed as a secret symbol

that they were still samurai

tattooing was actually illegal in Japan until 1948

even today

tattoos are still associated with organized crime

and outlaws

yes these are pictures of how they used to tattoo

the criminals

they used to tattoo people who were convicted of crimes

with a symbol that signified what that crime was

that's how they would let the members of the public

some places I mean they'd put on their forehead

stencil with an electric machine which I was used to

so it didn't really faze me

but I've never had a traditional

Japanese tattoo done in the traditional style of tebori

and I was totally nervous about that because

everyone was like oh it hurts you feel it

it's different it's

different yeah I'm used to hearing the hum

the worst part honestly

was hearing the needles going in

you could hear like a squelch it was like

surgery

I don't know if I'm just numb or it doesn't actually hurt as much

it's not as bad as the machine actually
