the reality show, the clothing.

She became a billionaire.

She had a need to be famous,
and look what happened.

She does, like, everything.

What doesn't she

Kim Kardashian,
as big and powerful as she is,

I think without the sex tape,

she wouldn't have been as
well known all over the world.

That was her way
of getting famous,

and it worked
beyond anyone's imagination.

So, that's where
the theories come in.

Kim did admit that it did
kind of put her on the map.

That's pretty much how I was
introduced to the world.

You know, there are people
who say that

you put it out yourself.
You know that.

Kim hasn't shied away
from the topic

of her sex tape over the years.

Why did you make a sex tape?

Because I was horny,
and I felt like it.

But she never really gives,
like, a straight answer.

I know there's a lot
of versions of this story.

There's the question
of who leaks it.

Whether or not
you think that Kim Kardashian

leaked the tape herself...

"We reshot scenes. This tape
was created to be sold."

Some versions
of the story have

her mom and Ray J conspiring.

The Kardashians
and the Jenners

are extremely savvy.
They know it works.

But I have the real story.

What I saw in that tape is not
what was edited and put up.

I saw two people
rolling on Ecstasy

and one of them getting
peed on in the bathtub.

You think A&E's gonna show that?

Once upon a time in America,

celebrity culture was
like a mythology of its own.

These people were
on Mount Olympus

because these weren't people
like us.

These--These are people
that were on

the television
and on the screen.

In the olden days,

it was just
this fascination with people

that had managed to transcend
normal human life and become

a part of the Hollywood
media mythology.

Yes.

And the first
Bachelorette, Trista Rehn.

Why not do a show where
I get to do the two things?

How cool is that?

In the early 2000s, we got into
this sort of world of, like,

anybody can be famous.

I'm Allison. I'm 19,
and I'm a personal trainer.

What's up, everybody?
I'm Taylor.

My girlfriend's name is Justine.

Anyone could become a celebrity.

With reality TV, It just became

you're just interesting
to watch.

You're interesting to look at.
Your life is a mess.

We wanna see that.

So now, instead of Hollywood
being this unattainable dream

that only a select few
have access to

or can risk everything
to achieve,

and you have
got to be the [bleep] best,

you can get a reality show.

Now you're famous.
Do you have talent?

What's your contribution
to society? Who are you?

There's some kind of shift
in our culture where

people are seeking fame more,
and I think it could be

related to we have access
to fame much easier.

There's cameras on all of
our phones, and all of a sudden,

everyone is the star
of their own reality.

And a lot of,
especially for the youth,

they're seeking this fame
because, in part,

society is telling you
that's what is important.

And Paris Hilton is,
like, probably

the best example
of something like that.

Hey, Paris. How are you?

Paris Hilton was,
to my knowledge,

the first celebutante.

Holy, she....

She really
captured a generation.

People were obsessed with her.

I've had
such an interesting life,

and I have a lot to say.

At that time, Kim was just
known as Paris Hilton's stylist.

She didn't really have
a name of her own yet.

They had gone
to preschool together.

They had very similar lives
growing up.

Kim and Paris had
a good relationship.

Paris was the star.
Kim was in the shadows.

It was always about Paris.

But Kim wanted
to be famous herself.

Everyone kind of had
this inkling that she really

wanted to have the status
of Paris Hilton.

And it felt to me like
that movie "All about Eve."

Kim was watching.
Kim was studying.

Every move Paris made,

Kim took notes to become famous,
and let's face it,

the Kardashians
were not unknown.

The Kardashian name was known

because of Kim's father,
Robert Kardashian,

who defended O.J. Simpson
in his murder trial.

Kris Jenner is her mother.

Kris Jenner wanted
her daughters to be famous,

and she groomed them for that.

And Paris Hilton
is the blueprint

for every successful
reality star.

Kim used Paris as
her prototype.

So, someone like Paris Hilton

and the other celebrity
socialites of the 2000s,

all of these people depend
on the paparazzi to survive.

If your job is to be famous,

then you do
have to court paparazzi.

So, now, in the 2000s,

there was no more boundaries
anymore

between how celebrities
were covered.

It was just a free-for-all.

Yeah. Oh, my God.
Well, we can't get through.

Paparazzi
wanna get the best shot,

and they could get them at
their most vulnerable moment.

They didn't really think
about issues of consent

or bodily autonomy
when it came to women.

There were
so many celebrity women

who were getting out of cars,

and they didn't have
underwear on,

but they were wearing a skirt.

And photographers
would just take pictures

of their, like,
spread-open vaginas.

Those photographs were known
as the crotch shots.

You're photographing them
coming out of the car

because there could be something

that's laying there
that tells a story.

You're shooting at an angle,

and sure,
you're gonna get that shot.

It really was kind of normal
at the time,

and women were
just supposed to accept that.

I think that celebrity nudity
is so big in our culture

because people feel
like they own a celebrity,

or they're entitled
to every aspect

of a celebrity's life,
especially

if their entire celebrity
is based

on their personality
and their personal life,

rather than, you know, the way
they can sing or dance or act.

People want to see all of it.

The crazier, the picture.
I mean, look at Britney Spears.

If you see, you know,

when she was really being
stalked by the paparazzi,

I mean, it was
really mentally abusive.

I mean, it's actually--really,
you look back on it now,

and it's terrifying.
It's so incredibly sad to watch,

but that's how they made money.

Obviously, many celebrities
were calling the paparazzi

and telling them
where they were going.

There were, you know, people
that had teams of publicists

that were definitely
orchestrating.

I have called
the paparazzi myself.

Hi, guys. What's up?
Hey, what's up?

Unfortunately,
to work within the system,

a lot of women have
to work with the system.

Kim, you know,
she did that, too.

Kim is very aware of
the media and perception

and how to control
the narrative.

When Paris Hilton had broken up
with her BFF Tara Reid,

Paris Hilton had a party
at Hyde nightclub

and had no one to go with,
and who did she take?

Plain Jane Kimmy Kardashian.

TMZ owns it--The video.

My quick thinking
saw what was happening.

Tara Reid
was being denied entry,

and here comes Paris Hilton
with the new BFF,

which was, at that night,
Kimmy Kardashian,

and she drug her into Hyde.

That video that I took
made Kim Kardashian.

But Kim Kardashian
wanted that kind of attention.

She was able to take control
of this image

and make it into what
she wanted to make it.

Beautiful.

She wanted to really
have world dominance.

Kim modeled herself on Paris.

Everything is contrived.

Now, is that a bad thing?

It's a judgment call.

In the early 2000s,

there are a lot of different
shortcuts to fame--

reality TV, and, of course,
a celebrity sex tape.

That was like the mic drop.

She did that
because she wanted to

and because she was horny.
Good for her.

She became a billionaire
from a sex tape.

Any movies or anything?

Kim Kardashian went to Cabo
with her boyfriend Ray J,

who actually, at the time,
I think, had a single out...

that nobody was listening to.

And they did what people do
in Cabo,

and they did it on tape,
which some people do that...

I'm told.
Not me, other people, you know.

Kim and Ray J
broke up in 2006

but remained on good terms.
And then later that year,

rumors of a sex tape
started coming out.

And even if you don't
wanna watch the tape,

you're probably super curious.

There was news of Kim's sex tape

coming out
before it even came out.

She kept denying it.

Perez Hilton was
the source of so many rumors,

and social media
spread the word.

There was Facebook.
Twitter was very new.

Word starts spreading. Kim says,
"No, no, no, there's no tape."

Everyone in the world
knew about it.

Then it becomes clear
that there is a tape,

and Kim says, "Okay, it's not
for public consumption."

Supposedly,
it was an old sex tape,

which even increased
the value more.

With social media
amplifying the message

of the sex tape being out there,

Kim Kardashian was on the road
to being a star overnight.

I'm Kevin Blatt,

and I'm
the celebrity sex tape broker.

Here, I had been
a marketing guy, a sales guy.

I was selling penis enlargement
pills back in the day.

Ask me if they work.

They sell.

I mean, look, we all like
to make money, you know?

Did I think when I
went to Ohio State University

that I'm gonna major

in public relations
and celebrity sex?

No. You know, a fish doesn't
know it needs water

until you throw it
out of the tank, right?

I didn't know how badly
I needed to be this guy

until I started doing
all the media interviews.

And it wasn't
until "The New York Times"

or I think "Vanity Fair"
or somewhere cited me

as the celebrity sex tape
"broker"

that I sat there,
and I laughed and I went,

how ludicrous is this?

What a weird moniker
this is, right?

So, every interview I would do,
every place I would go,

I'm just the P.T. Barnum
of [bleep], right?

I wanted to be that ringleader
who was gonna get people

to call me
if they had a sex tape.

Kim became the biggest story.

And here we are 20 years later,
still talking about it.

And for the most part,
most of America's dumb.

They believe everything
that you tell 'em.

And they should believe this

because I'm telling you
the truth.

When Ray J came and met with me
about the sex tape,

I didn't know who Ray J was.

My friend had to explain to me

that he was Snoop Dogg's cousin

and Brandy Norwood's brother.

And he said to me, you know,

"K.B., Kim wants to release this
for free."

What's up, Paris?!

"She wants to be bigger
than Paris."

I said, "No, bro,
you have to convince her

to not release this for free

'cause there's millions
of dollars at stake here."

He goes, "Who's gonna
give me the millions?"

I said,
"I'm gonna broker this deal,

and I'm going to bring you over
to Red Light District Video.

He's the guy that I wanna
put this out with,

and he's going to pay you
at least a million upfront."

"Let's do it."

I met with him
at a Cheesecake Factory

in Woodland Hills out here.

After the meeting,
Ray J And I shook hands.

He got in his Lamborghini.
He took off.

And the friend that introduced
me to him and I basically said,

okay, we're gonna get
a piece of the action,

and we're gonna make money
on this.

It wasn't
until a couple days later,

when he was ducking
my phone calls,

that I found out
that Kim told him,

"I'm really good friends

with Joe Francis
from 'Girls Gone Wild,'

and Joe Francis could help
us out.

He's best friends
with the owner of Vivid."

I ended up not getting
a piece of that action.

That's just the way
the cookie crumbles sometimes.

But again, I'm okay with it
because I saw the original tape,

and what I saw on that tape
is not

what was edited and put up.

I saw two people
rolling on Ecstasy,

and one of them getting
peed on in a bathtub.

Vivid Entertainment
is a huge porn company--

top of its game, really,

especially once they got into
the celebrity sex tape realm.

That was kind of their
bread and butter for a while.

A lot of people
have been misinformed.

They think it was a third party
that sold the tape to Vivid.

I'm a number one
"New York Times"

Best-Selling author.

I'm the first person
in the world to ever release

that the Kardashians
actually were instrumental

in selling the sex tape.

In my book,
"Kardashian Dynasty,"

I was able to outline it all.

And the one thing I learned
was that Kim deliberately leaked

the sex tape because
she wanted to become famous.

I heard through the grapevine

that Kris had come in
and done the deal with Vivid,

and Kim didn't want her name
or signature on anything.

I believe it was just Kim's mom

and Ray J
that facilitated the deal.

There were intense negotiations

because the Kardashians
wanted a lot,

and Vivid's not a company
to give up a lot.

They made it very exclusive.

They made sure the security
cameras were turned off.

They brought in
their own computer.

They showed some rushes.

It was sort of like
a sizzle reel,

but it wasn't that simple.

There was a lot
of nuts and bolts

in the contract to iron out,

and the lawyers had to go over
it with a fine-toothed comb.

She had final cut, so they
weren't gonna show themselves

in a bad angle or anything that
showed 'em having a fat ass

or no boobs or whatever it was.

They made it as
complimentary as possible.

Everybody in New York
wanted to see this sex tape.

We'd heard about it.

I was curious.
I think a lot of people were.

And then, boom.

Paris Hilton found out
about the sex tape.

Paris Hilton must have
heard about it online.

Paris was really
blindsided by all this.

She didn't see it coming.

Paris was a victim

of a leaked celebrity sex tape
without her consent.

For Paris,
it was probably retraumatizing

just to watch Kim go through it.

Nobody wants to be looked at
as just a 2-dimensional body.

It takes
everything away from you.

Yikes. How were we so wrong?

So, who's the most
eligible woman in the world?

I don't know.

"FHM" magazine
thinks the answer is simple,

and the pictures prove it--
hotel heiress

and the host of
"The Simple Life," Paris Hilton.

To be attractive, you just have
to know that you are

and just be happy with yourself
no matter what you look like.

Paris Hilton,
before the tape came out,

was basically a socialite.

She was a young socialite,
and the gossip columns,

specifically "Page Six,"
were, like, super into her.

Paris Hilton
was a local celebrity.

She was here in New York
in the tabloids

and the gossip columns.

And she was kind of
raising hell in New York.

Her and her sister
would go to clubs.

They'd go to bars,
and wherever they went,

there was always
a story that followed.

I remember bumping into her
in a really chic club,

and I was intoxicated.

She illuminates a room.

Be fabulous.
Be colorful and have fun.

Paris Hilton was the "it" girl.

She was a socialite, a model,

but as we've come to know,

there was a lot more going on
than the celebrity sheen.

As she's revealed in
her documentary, in her memoir,

she went
through some real [bleep],

like she went
through a lot of trauma.

Allegedly, Paris' parents
had her kidnapped

in the middle of the night
and taken off

to this
"emotional growth school"

in Utah states away,
like halfway across the country,

where she experienced,
like, a ton of abuse,

like physical abuse
and emotional abuse.

This can lead to depression.
This can lead to anxiety.

You often see
substance abuse,

your unhealthy relationships
later on.

She never spoke to me
about trauma.

She was really creating this
candy-covered, fluffy image.

She had this reality show
with her friend Nicole Richie

called "The Simple Life."

There's a lot
of early buzz for it.

It's supposed to be
really fun, really fluffy.

People are excited to watch this
and sort of make fun of her,

but in a way that
she's kind of controlling.

And we're doing this
to prove everyone wrong

and show we can do anything.

It was a smash hit.

Everybody wanted to see
this girl, Paris Hilton.

That is Earth.
It's hot.

And then three weeks
before the show premieres,

the sex tape hits the internet.

Biggest story of all,
that everyone's talking about--

the Paris Hilton sex tape.

That's what, really, people
are talking about right now.

I was shocked when it came out.

It's a video she shoots
when she's 19 years old,

with her boyfriend at
the time, Rick Salomon.

Rick Salomon--
I don't know if he has, like,

the best reputation
in Hollywood.

He's a professional gambler.

He's known more
for the women he's dated

than for anything he's
actually achieved in his life.

He wanted to be
rich and important,

and he wanted to be the guy
who gets the girls,

and he figured out how to do it.

I mean, it's kind of sleazy that
this guy in his 30s was, like,

having sex with and convincing
this very young girl

to make a sex tape with him.

There's a huge difference

between a young woman who's 19
and a man in his early 30s.

Consent may have been present,

but coercion
was likely present, too.

It was recorded on--I think
it was with a handheld camera,

and it was such
an intimate recording.

The tape is kind of the most
explicit we've seen so far.

The--The quality is good.

The sex acts are longer.

- It's a lot.
- People weren't meant to see it.

It was between them.

It wasn't supposed to be public.

Paris' sex tape really exploded.
So, at the time,

she was a New York celebrity,

and I remember
everybody was whispering,

even at a really sort of
very fancy company...

...that Paris Hilton had
a sex tape,

and then it became
the most important thing

to get hold of.

We were all
really excited to see it.

shot during
a very personal encounter.

The tape leaks
to the internet at large...

,,,just going around
kind of off the grid on--

file-sharing sites.

Rick Salomon
eventually takes it

to legitimate
porn distribution companies

and sells it to them.

The hotel heiress says

the company violated her privacy

because she and Rick Salomon,
her ex,

made the tape for personal use.

It was Paris that had
to apologize in interviews

and defend herself
and deal with the ridicule,

and everybody trying to watch

this intimate moment
was super violating.

Rick, the first time
this tape got out,

you said you didn't have
anything to do with it, right?

That's correct.
I had nothing to do with it.

So, how does
releasing the tape now

defend you against
those earlier accusations?

already sold the tape

everywhere I went
for three months.

And I just figured, you know,
if everybody thinks I did it,

a product to be consumed.

I think the theme of every
sex tape being leaked,

including Paris's,

is that the female party
is always villainized.

All the comedians
are joking about her.

Can you imagine
how they must have felt,

Paris Hilton's parents,
that she did a porno film

in a Marriott hotel?

I mean, it is just...

There was a lot of slut shaming.

She was kind of the classic
late night monologue fodder.

She's on David Letterman.
She's everywhere.

It's the first time
that the words "Paris Hilton"

and "job" have ever
been used in a sentence.

There was so much backlash
to Paris,

like "South Park"
calling her a whore.

I just got

the "Stupid Spoiled Whore
Video Playset."

You're a stupid, spoiled whore.

This is the hypocrisy
of the world that we live in.

Women are always blamed,
and so Paris is the one

that really, really got
the backlash.

So, the singer P!nk
had a music video

for the song "Stupid Girls."

And in it, there's a re-creation
of the Paris Hilton sex tape,

and so Paris is the punchline.
She's a bimbo. She's stupid.

She allowed herself
to be in this situation.

Um, looking back,
it was not very feminist at all.

It's very easy to say, well,
this girl's pretty and rich,

and she didn't do anything,

so I'm gonna make fun of her.

You know that expression

about hitting people
when they're down?

What was really smart is
she didn't really

ever do a sit-down interview
or talk about this.

She didn't sit down with
Diane Sawyer or Barbara Walters.

In fact,
she did something genius.

She went on "SNL."

Welcome to "SNL's"
Super Bowl party. I've had--

And at the time, Tina Fey

is one of the head writers
for the show,

and she wanted Paris to do
a skit about the sex tape.

And they tell her
it's gonna be very funny,

and she's like,
"I can't do that.

This is traumatic to me.
This is really hurtful.

It's a bad experience."

And not long after,
Tina Fey goes on a radio show,

and she completely rips Paris.

Paris Hilton.
I would kill myself.

Like, she's--
-She's a piece of [bleep].

- Yeah.
- I'm a huge fan of Tina.

I'm shocked
that she would be that cruel.

I mean, she's a comedian.

You know,
you can make fun of people,

but you don't have to go there.

She looks
like a tranny up close.

Her hand--her hand is like
from my elbow

to the end of my hand.
- And she walks odd,

for a chick who grew up
in New York.

Her feet are, like,
bigger than yours.

I don't think it's pro woman.

I don't think
it's feminist at all.

Such mean girl behavior

from the creator
of "Mean Girls."

I've had a great time
this week.

It's been very exciting to do
live TV because there are

no tapes whatsoever involved,
and that makes me very happy.

She made fun of herself,
and that's when you figured out

there's more to this girl
than meets the eye.

She's always surprising us.

And that's how

you make lemonade
from lemons in America.

All of these other people
felt like it was totally natural

to talk about Paris in this way.

But you look back on it,
and it's like,

yikes, how were we so wrong?

The time was such that
people felt entitled to this.

People were not thinking about
consent in these terms.

And I'm certain

that if that case happened now,

people would be
on Paris Hilton's side.

Now, Paris has gone on to be
sort of a global trendsetter,

that she has taken fame

and proven it can be extended
and extended and extended.

Without Paris, there would be
no Kim Kardashian.

She was the template.

Did it come out good?

Kim studied everything,
every nuance,

and she had a master plan.

Kim saw the level of fame
that Paris attained

after that tape came out,

and fame being
a double-edged sword

because it came
with ridicule and hate.

In my opinion,
Kim studied the media's response

and figured out a way
that she could benefit.

Kim Kardashian becomes
a superstar

in the wake of her tape.

I think that it's actually,
like, ingenious.

It's like hook, line,
and sinker.

Like, it totally worked.

Kim Kardashian claimed that

she was really embarrassed
and that she did not leak it.

Vivid Entertainment said
that they received the tape

from a third party.

Kim Kardashian's camp said
that it was

either obtained from someone
who robbed them or Ray J.

Of all the celebrity sex tapes,
that's the biggest one.

That's the one that exploded.
It was lightning in a bottle.

Vivid Entertainment came to
an agreement with Kim and Ray J.

All of the parties benefited.

The Kim Kardashian tape--
it was set up as something

that was never meant
to get out there,

but they didn't even
really bother to give us

a good story about that.

Pam and Tommy--
they gave us a story,

and we know how that tape
got out.

It was so half-assed,
the Kim and Ray J thing.

They were both kind of like,
"Oh..." You know?

Celebrity news spread the word.

It was on every page
of every magazine.

Her story was always so flimsy.

She said
that it was just stolen.

And I--it always kind
of seemed like

the implication was on Ray J,

that, like, Ray J had somehow
sold it to make money.

It was so strategic,

and Kim, I believe,
wanted to have this in the vault

just in case she decided

she wanted to become famous
and get her own show.

It was perfect.

And the proof is on the--
the wall.

You know, in the adult business,

we have something called
USC 2257,

which is a legal statute
that states

if you're performing
for adult content,

not only are you giving
your rights

for your name and likeness
to be exploited commercially,

but you're also gonna show
two forms of identification

that show that you're
above 18 years of age

and you're legal.

You will see USC 2257
on any jewel case DVD

that shows any type of nudity.

What that also means is
there's a custodian of records.

If the feds need to come
and inspect and make sure

that that person's over 18,
they could view those records.

And the reason why
I'm bringing this up to you

is there's USC 2257
on Kim Kardashian's sex tape

and any celebrity sex tape
you've ever seen

that was shown commercially
and sold commercially,

which means what?

It means Kim gave
their driver's license

and a passport

or birth certificate
to that adult company

to the custodian of records,

so that if the feds needed
to come in and make sure,

they can,
and I know the lawyer

whose office that sits in
to this day.

It was their best-selling tape
of all time,

and it ended up
making $115 million.

Part of the reason is because
Vivid were masters of marketing.

So they had the best
art direction,

publicity, P.R. team,

so they were as close
to a mainstream company

as we had in adult.

So, it wasn't just
the Kim Kardashian sex tape,

but they knew how to market it,

and they knew how
to create a buzz for it.

And it fed on itself, you know?

Once that tape started to
come out, everybody wanted it.

Vivid said,
"You wanna be a superstar?"

Let's call it
"Kim Kardashian, Superstar."

Make it very simple,
And it worked.

A couple months
after the tape was leaked,

the Kardashians had a show on E!

When I first heard
about Kim's tape, as her mother,

I wanted to kill her.

But as her manager,
I knew that I had a job to do,

and I really just
wanted her to move past it.

Kim Kardashian's life
pre- and post-sex tape

are dramatically different.

Hey, Kim, look over
your shoulder this way.

Marketing it
as a placement for her

to launch her career

and turn into celebrity
is really smart.

It was a primer
for her future stardom.

I think that the legacy
of Kim's tape

can be perceived in a--
a couple of different ways.

If you think about
the legacy from the perspective

of how she turned a sex tape
into a multimillion,

billion-dollar career that
continues to grow and evolve...

And yet she's still really

very strongly associated
with her sex tape.

Even if she does
something great,

there will always be somebody
who's ready to say,

"But what about the sex tape?"

The tape is called
"Kim Kardashian, Superstar."

Kim Kardashian becomes
a superstar

in the wake of the tape.

She didn't have a reality show
until after her sex tape.

E!--the TV network,

not the fifth letter
of the alphabet,

announced it has signed
the Kardashian family

to a 3-year contract
worth $40 million.

And reportedly, the deal doesn't
even cover product endorsements,

which means the lovable clan

stands to make
a buttload more money.

Everybody became
obsessed with Kim.

It worked 'cause
she wanted her star to increase,

and the best way to do it
was to plant a sex tape.

I did not know
who Kim Kardashian was

I truly believe that Paris' tape
was leaked without her consent.

I think that she was upset
about the fact that Kim denies

that she had anything to do with
the release of the sex tape.

Also kind of frames it as,
"I am successful despite this,"

instead of "I am successful
because of this," you know?

Because it does de-legitimize
that Paris said that, you know,

"This was done without my
permission, without my consent."

It sort of framed it as,
Paris did that deliberately

when before, I think that people

believed that she didn't
do that deliberately.

Paris hasn't capitalized
on her sexuality

the way that the Kardashians
and Jenners have over the years.

I don't think I've ever seen
a nude photo shoot with her

I've seen every part

normalizing the sex tape

and not having that
torpedo her career.

I mean, she showed that you
could really just do that.

That was how she launched.

And she only launched from--

into the stratosphere.

realized

that sex tapes
could be really good marketing.

were people who would have

wanted to follow Kim

just to become famous.

and Colin just assumed
that she would be honorable

and not do anything with it.
