was very exciting.

At the same time, when I landed,

unfortunately, my appendix

I needed to have surgery
immediately.

In the hospital bed,
not knowing if I was

going to be able to be here

after all this hard work,

it was extremely scary.

For the blind audition,

There's a specific line

not a lot for me in that room

that I could hold on to
that could get me through

that moment without expressing

a scary moment.

these theater camps growing up.

And he got on stage,

From there,

which is the theater.

to sing with Broadway stars

for this event in New York,

to being asked to be a part

of a brand-new
original musical,

where we did the New York debut

he wouldn't believe it.

Doing theater my entire life

has really prepared me
to story-tell.

who the coaches were,

Music has always been
a part of my life.

My dad had a little home studio.

I was always so intrigued

by his ability
to create amazing songs.

When I was about 8 years old,

my older sibling started
a band with me.

We had, like,
this Everly Brothers

type of thing going
with the harmonies,

and we played
at the Whisky a Go Go

when we were like 12.

You know,
I really felt like a rock star,

and I was like, "Man,
this is what I want to do."

I sing a lot of alternative
rock, a lot of pop punk.

So, I'm gonna be performing

"Cigarette Daydreams"
by Cage the Elephant.

There we go.

It's a song about growing up
too quick a little bit,

and I can relate to that.

I was smoking cigarettes
in high school.

I was in with a bad crowd.
I was up to no good.

That kind of reached
a breaking point for me

around the time
that COVID happened.

Everything kind of started
falling apart.

I realized that I was dependent
on alcohol.

I started pushing away
my family, my friends.

I was isolating.

I was drinking
like a handle of vodka a day.

And I ended up living
out on the street for a while.

And eventually I decided,
after looking in the mirror,

that I needed to reach
out for help.

It was super tragic
'cause he was the happiest kid

you could ever imagine.

I didn't really fathom the depth

of what he was going through.

Ryan got to some
pretty dark places.

But he went to
this rehab facility,

and we sent him
an emergency box

with, like, a recorder,
a bunch of albums.

And he kept sending me
these MP3s with a new song.

And I'm like,
"Okay, he's gonna be okay."

And I was like...

[ Sniffles ]

..."He's gonna make it."

* Mind over matter *
It was really tough.

But he got better and better.

And now he's here.

I ended up getting sober,

and I'm still sober
four years later.

I think that music
really kind of saved my life.

was one of the best things
I've ever done.

a little bit of hope.
