I wanted to do,

but I just don't have that bravery

in high school.

I am 16 years old

and I am from Sydney.

Ah, I'm in Year 11 at school

and I have a part time job
at a local fruit shop.

And I just pick up
a few after-school shifts.

I stack fruit and serve,

usually helping the old people
to their car

and packing a few jokes
for them too.

It is really nice knowing
that I can help them, yeah.

Going on The Voice
has always been my dream

since I was about five years old,

but singing under your breath
in the shop,

compared to singing up

on The Voice
when you're in the spotlight.

That does scare me a bit.

Usually when I perform

I do get a bit nervous
and I tend to hold back a bit,

but the song I'm singing
for my blind audition

needs so much power and guts.

so, it's been like a really good way

to deal with things in life,

into something beautiful

that connects people.

I feel a deep affinity with you

My name's Charlie O'Derry.

I'm 17 and I'm from Port Macquarie.

Doing Year 12,
finishing my HSC this year

and after school
I manage a Thai restaurant

and it's the best Thai restaurant
in Port.

I love interacting
with all the people, serving food.

Free food every single night
and it helps me support my family.

So, when I was ten

my Dad left for work
as a prison chaplain.

And he came back never the same.

He had an accident at work

and got one of the worst
brain injuries

you can get.

It pretty much
wiped out everything he used to do.

It's been a big learning journey,

learning how to deal

and live with all the challenges
that come with it.

It's been
a rough few years, mate, but...

this is definitely a highlight.

so proud of you,

I just can't believe

My Dad had an accident at work

really bad seizures

every day for a long time.

So, he got a brain surgery last year
and the seizures have stopped

and so yeah, I gave music, um,
my hardest crack and it's just...

It's, yeah, it's really emotional
to see it's paying off.

I'm so sorry, I mean,
it sounds unimaginably tough

uh, but you have
this beautiful channel

for all of that emotion

Hello, how are you?

Man, that was beautiful,

You've got that thing
that you can't teach.

You can teach a singer technique,
you can work on their pitch,

you can work on phrasing,
you can work on breathing,

to make you believe them.

I was really close to my dad
he was my best friend and I lost him

when I was 33
and we shared music together um,

making me very emotional
thinking about my dad.

I got my first guitar
when I was eight years old.

I vividly remember
watching videos of Taylor Swift

and then getting my guitar teacher

along with them every single day.

family and friends

for years after that.

When I was 14 years old,

I auditioned
for another singing competition.

that I want to do in this world

What-what were those setbacks?

Um, there was a point

where I had sort of like
online commentary about my voice

and just about me
and I think I just took it to heart

'cause I was quite young

when you're a 14-year-old girl

anything anybody says
is gonna...is gonna hit home.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that,

but the thing is the better you get,

the more successful you are,

the more of those trolls
will come at you.

So, in a way
you can take it as a compliment.
