Music has always been something

I wanted to do,

but I just don't have that bravery to step out and do it.

I think at some point

I am 25 years old and I'm a primary school teacher,

currently teaching Year 6 class.

I-I haven't really performed much to be honest,

I-I did some stuff in

like battle of the bands in high school.

I'm Bianka Jakovljevic,

I am 16 years old

and I am from Sydney.

Ah, I'm in Year 11 at school

and I have a part time job at a local fruit shop.

And I just pick up a few after-school shifts.

I stack fruit and serve,

usually helping the old people to their car

and packing a few jokes for them too.

It is really nice knowing that I can help them, yeah.

I'm always humming to myself at work, yeah.

I don't loudly sing or I try not to loudly sing.

Going on The Voice has always been my dream

since I was about five years old,

but singing under your breath in the shop,

compared to singing up on the big stage

on The Voice when you're in the spotlight.

That does scare me a bit.

Usually when I perform

I do get a bit nervous and I tend to hold back a bit,

but the song I'm singing for my blind audition

needs so much power and guts.

Um, without music I'd be so lost,

it honestly like calms me down a lot

and I can always turn to music so, it's been like a really good way

to deal with things in life, so yeah.

Whatever pain you have in your life,

you can turn it into something beautiful

that connects people.

I feel a deep affinity with you

and I think you-you need to join Team Kate.

any of that in the song, is even more impressive.

My name's Charlie O'Derry.

I'm 17 and I'm from Port Macquarie.

Doing Year 12, finishing my HSC this year

and after school I manage a Thai restaurant

and it's the best Thai restaurant in Port.

I love interacting with all the people, serving food.

Free food every single night and it helps me support my family.

So, when I was ten

my Dad left for work as a prison chaplain.

And he came back never the same.

He had an accident at work

and got one of the worst brain injuries

you can get.

It pretty much wiped out everything he used to do.

It's been a big learning journey,

learning how to deal

and live with all the challenges that come with it.

It's been a rough few years, mate, but...

this is definitely a highlight.

I'm...I'm...I'm just so proud of you,

I just can't believe you're doing this.

I just want to give something back to them

It's something me and Dad can do together.

Play guitar together.

My Dad had an accident at work

pretty much half his brain is gone forever...

..and he suffered from, um, really bad seizures

every day for a long time.

So, he got a brain surgery last year and the seizures have stopped

and so yeah, I gave music, um, my hardest crack and it's just...

It's, yeah, it's really emotional to see it's paying off.

But just...

I'm so sorry, I mean, it sounds unimaginably tough

uh, but you have this beautiful channel

for all of that emotion

and it really comes through and I would love to work with you.

Hi, Charlie. Hello, how are you?

Man, that was beautiful, that was really beautiful.

So, moving.

You've got that thing that you can't teach.

You can teach a singer technique, you can work on their pitch,

you can work on phrasing, you can work on breathing,

but you can't teach a singer to make you believe them.

And I believed you from the minute you started singing.

It's absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful.

I was really close to my dad he was my best friend and I lost him

when I was 33 and we shared music together um,

making me very emotional thinking about my dad.

I would love to work with you because I think I get you

and as a father of three sons myself who all sing

I feel like we could do something really special.

Hey, Charlie, you said you're 17.

Yeah.

I'm sure that your dad has been proud of you many times

in your life,

but I don't know whether he's been as proud as he is of you today.

For a singer to have those emotions it's a gift,

but also it can be a curse,

you know, 'cause one of the worst things

for a singer is that you do get upset.

I could definitely hear nerves in that performance

but that was so moving and touching

and I think everybody in the room felt it

so, it's so wonderful to have...

mentor you, find some different sides to you.

doing 200ks an hour.

it's a lot of fun.

But when I'm not out on the water, you can catch me singing.

Always wanted to be a country singer but there was a time

when I was really doubting my abilities.

and I didn't have the fund

so, sold my guitar,

And then next thing I knew

he comes out and gives me his guitar

I got my first guitar when I was eight years old.

I vividly remember watching videos of Taylor Swift

and then getting my guitar teacher

to teach me how to play those songs

and then just singing along with them every single day.

I was just forcing family and friends

to sit down and listen to me sing

for years after that.

When I was 14 years old,

I auditioned for another singing competition.

I experienced quite a bit of backlash online

and it took quite a big knock to my confidence.

Then I stepped away from music for a long time.

that there is nothing else that I want to do in this world

and in my lifetime and so...

You talked about setbacks that stopped you from singing.

What-what were those setbacks?

Um, there was a point

where I had sort of like online commentary about my voice

and just about me and I think I just took it to heart

'cause I was quite young at the time,

I was like 14 and you know I think

when you're a 14-year-old girl

anything anybody says is gonna...is gonna hit home.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that,

but the thing is the better you get,

the more successful you are,

the more of those trolls will come at you.

So, in a way you can take it as a compliment.
