ANNOUNCER: Previously on The Voice...
The Blind auditions kicked off.
(SINGERS VOCALISE)
You are born to do this.
You're the reason I came to Australia,
to find somebody like you.
Way to blow the Blinds wide open.
(LAUGHTER)
And while Richard...
I may have to go with Richard.
Richard. Yes.
Thank you for picking me.
..Kate... I'm gonna go with Kate.
Kate. I'm gonna go Kate.
Me.
Oh, my god. Amazing.
..and Melanie C were successful...
I think I'm going to go with Melanie C.
..Ronan missed out.
No!
There's no-one on Team Ronan.
I didn't think this early on I'd be on the back foot.
(SINGERS VOCALISE)
Ronan is ready to fight.
I'll work with you as a singer
and I'll get you to where you need to be.
Oh.
But the other coaches...
If you came to the show to win, I'm your coach.
You know that. You need to be on Team Ronan.
..won't make it easy.
Ready to, like, block this guy and I actually...
No you can't.
No, no, no, no, you can't block me, guys.
# This is The Voice. #
(UPBEAT MUSIC)
Alright, I'm gonna win this one.
Come on, Team Ronan, come on.
You've still got none.
You've still got none.
Don't laugh when you say that.
She just said, "Ha! You still got none."
I mean, Kate.
I was told you're the, you know, the cute one.
And you're like the... Who told you that?
You know.
What's happening? I've got three.
Why are you falling behind so badly.
Ronan?
I mean... What's going on?
Have you two or one?
I'm one.
I'm hurting.
I'm hurting.
Well, good luck. It's still early.
Thanks.
Just think about how it's gonna feel, guys,
when I just get one after the other after the other after the other.
Just in a row.
At the very end, after all our teams are full.
Yeah, when everyone else is full.
(LAUGHS) And they've got no choice.
(LAUGHS)
This is so cool.
(GIGGLES)
Action.
I'm Milly Monk.
I'm 24 years old
from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland,
and I'm here because tarot told me to.
I'm doing what the cards say.
# This is just feel So, so, so good... #
After I applied for The Voice,
I did my tarot cards and they told me that
this is the journey I should be on.
My singing experience, I'm self-taught.
The biggest crowd I've performed in front of was probably
my closest friends and my family, that's it.
Singing in the shower kind of person.
Just never have had confidence to pursue it in any way
and this is like stepping into the world of music.
So, I'm going to do a reading to see
how I go in my Blinds.
I trust in the universe.
I trust in the tarot. Yeah.
So, this is something about how the Blind will be?
Yeah.
OK, so we've got the Eight of Cups,
but it's upside down.
So, it's gonna be the opposite of what I'll read.
Oh. (GASPS)
Limited success.
So, lots of success.
Game over.
I think we just stop there. Yeah.
I don't know how you're feeling, but I'm-I'm pretty nervous.
But I know that this is everything. Yeah.
And I'm so proud that you've chased it.
If this card means anything,
it means that I'm gonna go out there and smash it.
Alright. Let's go, Mimsy.
Good luck. We wish... I love you guys.
..you so much.
Ah, for the love of god,
if these tarot cards aren't right, I will be devastated.
If a chair turns tonight, that's a sign that
I'm meant to be pursuing my dreams.
I'm-I'm ready.
Whoo!
Please turn a chair.
(SONG PLAYS IN BACKGROUND)
This one gonna be yours, Ron.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah?
All of them.
Whoo!
# Just like the white-winged dove
# Sings a song
# Sounds like she's singin'
# And the days go by Like a strand in the wind
# In the web that is my own, I begin again
# Said to my friend
# "Baby, nothin' else mattered"
# But the moment that I first laid
# Eyes on him
# All alone
# On the edge of 17
# Just like the white-winged dove
# Sings a song, Sounds like she's singin'
# "Ooh, baby, ooh, said, ooh"
# Just like the white-winged dove
# Sings a song, Sounds like she's singin'
# On the edge of 17. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Congratulations.
Hey. How are you?
I'm good. Yeah?
You can breathe now.
You're very good. You did such a good job.
That was brilliant. Look, four chairs.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Did you all turn?
Yeah.
Oh, my god.
Wow.
So, who are you and where have you come from?
I'm Milly, and I'm 24 years old.
And I'm from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
Whoo! Go Queensland?
Yeah, I'm from Queensland, too.
My wife's Australian.
Not again.
(LAUGHTER)
Milly, what's your story? What's your background?
My background is that I'm a pretty chill person.
Fun and a bit spiritual and I do a bit of, like,
tarot reading and stuff.
And that's actually why I'm here today.
Because it's, like... Really?
..told me to, yeah, come and, like, follow your journeys.
Wow. Yeah, yeah.
Did the cards tell you that you should be on Team Richard?
'Cause that's right.
They said many things, Richard.
They said many things.
Let me tell you something, that was really, really wonderful.
At first, I wasn't sure that the song choice was right
because I thought, it's so, first of all,
classic and Stevie is just so identifiable.
I actually toured with Stevie Nicks.
We played Wembley Stadium, I mean...
Nice. Wow.
..Wembley Arena together.
So, I have a little history with Stevie.
I'm just saying.
Oh, my, goodness.
But it's, you know, when you pick a song that's
so identifiable by another singer and then you made it your own
and the power, like
that's what I was kind of waiting for.
And so I was waiting to see
if you brought it and you brought it!
Wow.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
I've been lucky enough to produce
some pretty amazing female singers in my life.
From Olivia Newton-John to Barbra Streisand,
and I would love you to be
somebody I get to work with and see what happens.
OK. Wow. OK.
Thank you.
Great song choice.
I love your tone.
I would love to have you on my team.
I just feel like, with the spirituality
that you obviously have, you have good instincts.
You know, you showed that in your performance.
I always try to trust my gut
and I just think we could work well together.
I'd be really interested to see where else we could take you.
While the genres we could do.
Yeah, I think we'd be a good fit.
Ooh.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
You know, what you didn't do, is you didn't overegg the pudding.
And that's what a lot of people come out here and they try
and sing all the notes, and they try and,
you know, impress us in 90 seconds.
And they get it wrong. OK.
What you did is you were...you were right down the middle.
It was pure. It was effortless.
You talk about being spiritual.
I mean, I, I'm-I'm a very spiritual person myself.
(LAUGHTER)
I mean, why is that funny?
What?
The fact that you said that
and the whole audience laughed tells you a lot.
I actually, foresaw this moment happening.
Oh.
So... OK. That's good.
So, much so that I got your name
tattooed on my arm.
Oh!
Please show us.
Wait, what?
Ooh.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
(SCREAMS AND LAUGHS)
OK. See?
That's hilarious.
I know, you see?
So, what a lot of people say is
when they come to Team Ronan, they have fun.
Great.
And I can see that you want to have fun.
I do, I definitely do. Yeah?
Girls just want to have fun.
Come to Team Ronin. OK.
We're gonna have a great time.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Alright. Ooh!
Girls just want to have fun.
But also, this is a serious competition.
And she's a serious singer. So... Oh, here we go.
I mean, Kate's-Kate's the serious one on the panel.
Believe me, you'll have fun on my team.
But it's also about the work and making the work satisfying.
Oh.
We won't work that much.
We party, we have a great time. OK.
And this is why he's got zero people on his team so far
Just letting you know.
Oh. Shots fired.
I've been waiting...
Just... ..for the good stuff.
OK. Me? I'm waiting for you.
I'm waiting. Oh.
Your voice is really beautiful, really mesmerising.
And I love the symbolism in the tarot.
I'm not sure about
how good they are at predicting things,
but I predict that you'll be happiest on Team Kate.
Oh, that was good.
That was good.
Come on, Milly.
Right, well...
Yeah, I think you all said so many amazing things.
I'm actually a bit taken back by it.
I think I'm going to have to go with...
Ronan. Ronan.
Yeah!
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Yeah.
Thank you, Milly.
Nice work.
Awesome. Thank you.
Thank you. That was really awesome.
I waited for you. I waited a long time.
It's Ronan. (LAUGHTER)
Come on, let's go.
Bye, guys.
Nice work.
Oh, my god!
That was amazing. How good was she?
Nice to meet you guys. How are you? Dad.
I'm so glad you went, Ronan. He had no-one.
Oh, look. Seriously. Delighted to have her on my team.
I'll take good care of her.
She was really good. Yeah.
Really good. Really good.
And Ronan got someone.
Finally, Ronan can shut up about "I don't have anybody on my team."
Hey, it's not our fault you're not popular.
I was just watching her the whole time,
and, yeah, wouldn't matter if a chair had turned or not.
I was just really proud of her.
Oh, thank you.
Oh, baby.
(SCREAMS)
Oh. Is he back?
Is he back? Here we go.
I told you there was nothing to worry about.
Whoo.
Finally, Ronan.
Don't "Finally" me, you. About bloody time.
Yes.
I think...I think do you think she felt a bit sorry for you?
No, not at all. Not at all.
Like, I shouldn't have brought up
the fact that you didn't have anyone.
It's OK. It's alright. It's a pity choice.
She's got a good heart.
She put your feelings before her career.
Yeah, yeah.
That's alright. I got one now. That's it.
That's it. No more zero.
Team Ronan is hot to trot.
Let's go.
Come on, Team Ronan.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Still to come...
We are 3pm.
These groups...
We are Vixens of Fall.
..come seeking glory.
You guys could go all the way.
And next... Don't.
No way.
Girl group icon Melanie C spices up the stage.
I can't believe that just happened.
# This is The Voice. #
# This is The Voice. #
Who's your favourite coach, ladies and gentlemen?
Come on, make some noise in here.
Love you, Richard.
I love you, too,
but I do feel the need to see other people.
(UPBEAT MUSIC)
# Gather round and sing with me A song to be sung
# Go on and tell everyone... #
I'm Mitchell Dormer.
I'm 33, I'm from Brisbane.
Hey, bubby.
Guess what daddy's doing today.
Piano. Piano.
I play piano in the Piano Bar in Byron Bay.
I'm playing song after song, request after request,
and the crowd is all around.
Just everyone singing and dancing. It's such a great gig.
One night, Melanie C came into the Piano Bar.
I wasn't playing that night and I saw all the videos
singing 'Wannabe' and I wish I was there,
it would have been awesome.
# I'm breaking away... #
I started piano when I was five years old.
Music is my whole life, my career, my future.
Everything is wrapped up in music.
I would love to be the next Elton John or Billy Joel,
played a huge audiences sell out stadiums
across the world.
That would be the dream.
Artist walk in.
It's a goal in my head
to make each one of them turn around.
I want...I want four chair turns.
Good luck.
Good luck to you.
Good luck to you.
(SOFT PIANO MUSIC)
# For a while there, it was rough
# But lately
# I've been doin' better
# Than the last four cold Decembers
# I recall
# And I hold you every night
# And that's a feelin' I wanna get used to
# But there's no man as terrified
# As the man who stands to lose you
# Oh, I hope I don't lose you
# Mm
# Please stay
# I want you, I need you, oh, god
# Don't take
# These beautiful things That I've got
# Please stay
# I want you, I need you, oh, god
# Don't take
# These beautiful things That I've got
# Oh
# Ooh
# Please don't take. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Beauty.
Holy moly.
Whoo!
What an incredible job.
Tell us your name. Tell us where you're from.
Tell everybody you're gonna be on my team.
(LAUGHTER)
My name is Mitchell Dormer.
I'm 33, I'm from Brisbane.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
I'm gonna just go out here and just say,
I came to this show to win.
If you came to the show to win, I'm your coach.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
You have exactly the kind of voice that I want to work with.
You came out here with a...with a command and a confidence.
That was really, really impressive.
I play piano, you play piano?
We're both...we're both kind of cute.
I think that the stage isn't big enough for two pianos.
So, you and Richard are two pianos? It's just too much.
So, you need, you know.
Tell that to Elton John and Billy Joel.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who?
Who are they?
Great song choice.
I love where this song starts and where it gets to.
You very much felt that dynamic.
I was on that journey with you.
Your piano playing is beautiful.
You know, so I'll work with you as a singer.
And I'll get you to where you need to be.
So, you know that you need to be on Team Ronan.
OK? Alright, come on.
Alright. Thank you. Come on.
(APPLAUSE)
I feel like you have the charisma.
I feel like you need a little bit more
confidence to bring it out.
But I loved your performance.
I would love to work with that voice.
You just got me.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
I could...I could tell
without spinning around that it was you playing the piano.
The piano and your voice were one organism.
I'd absolutely love to work with you.
I actually play piano, too,
(CLEARS THROAT) Richard.
I mean, we're gonna need a bigger studio,
with so many bloody pianos.
What's your background with performing?
Where do you usually perform?
I play at the Byron Bay Duelling Piano Bar usually.
Yeah. And actually...
I think I have. I've been there.
Actually, funny story, Melanie C,
you were on the night before I was on.
I got there the next day and everyone had told me that,
and now it's a full circle moment that you, that you're here now.
No way. That is so funny.
I love...I love that the way you say I was on the night you were off
So, yeah, I was in Byron Bay.
I was having a little vacation, and I heard about this bar,
and it's buzzing and it's packed, and they were playing, like,
loads of songs by loads of peopl that I know, like friends, you know?
Yeah.
And I was like, "I want to hear some Spice Girls."
So, yeah.
So, we put a request in and the guy,
he was like, "Yeah, like there's a Spice Girl here."
So, I like tapped him on the shoulder.
And I was like, "Hey."
I mean, yeah, we did a song.
Yeah, I was devastated.
Should we relive the moment you missed?
Yes. Really?
Shall we sing another Spice Girls together?
Yeah. Oh, my gosh.
No way.
Yeah.
Yes.
Let's go.
Is that for me? OK.
It's gotta be the zigazig ah.
Hello? How are you?
So, on the night I sang 'Wannabe'.
Yeah.
Would that be the song of choice?
Does everyone want to hear a bit of 'Wannabe'?
Come on. OK.
So, the problem we have is, there's five Spice Girls.
And there's only one of me, so I'm gonna need some...
Kate, do you want to help me?
Oh. I'd love to.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
But you know what, honestly, I expect everybody's help here.
OK? Are we ready? Hang on.
I think this is an off jacket moment.
Yes! Yes.
Let's go! Show the guns.
Show the guns.
Are we ready? Yeah.
OK. Yeah.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
# Girl
# I tell you what I want, What I really, really want
# So, tell me what you want What you really, really want
# I wanna, I wanna, I wanna
# I wanna really, really, Really wanna "zig-a-zig", ah
# If you wanna be my lover
# You gotta get with my friends
# Gotta get with my friends
# Make it last forever
# Friendship never ends
# If you wanna be my lover
# You have got to give
# Taking is too easy
# But that's the way it is. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Mitchell Dormer is brilliant.
That was a nice... I enjoyed that.
Can I just say thank you.
Oh, my god, what a surreal experience.
Does that mean you're officially a Spice Girl?
I can't believe that just happened.
Wow. Officially a Spice Girl.
Yeah. Yeah.
So, that's-that's completely unrehearsed,
as you might have guessed.
That was awesome.
So, I don't play piano.
But I think we could make more magic together.
I love that.
(LAUGHTER)
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Mitchell, the choice is yours.
Dun dun dun.
Oh. Well, I...
It's such an honour that
I've got all four of you to turn around.
That means a lot to me. Thank you so much.
Ronan.
um...
(LAUGHTER)
Alright.
Ronan.
They're terrible. They're terrible.
I'm gonna pick Ronan.
Yeah!
Get in.
(LAUGHS)
Oh, yes.
Thank you, Mitchell.
Thank you, mate.
Amazing.
Thank you, thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Incredible.
Oh, my goodness. I'm excited.
Thank you, mate. We're gonna have so much fun.
So many song ideas.
(APPLAUSE)
Awesome, mate.
(AUDIENCE SCREAM)
Whoo!
Whoa! Hello, family.
Hello.
Oh, my goodness, look at these guys.
How are you?
Hi. Great to meet you.
How you doing? How are you, Mum?
How's it going? Hey, boss.
How you doing? Great to meet you.
I'm so proud of you.
Must be very proud of him.
That is amazing.
Oh, I love it.
It's daddy.
He went for Ronan.
What? He was just sat there?
He didn't do anything.
That's my trump card.
Being a Spice Girl, getting up and singing.
Even that didn't win him over.
Oh, I would have loved to have worked with him.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
All you did was stand there.
You just sat.
I know, I've been trying too hard, obviously.
I've obviously been trying too hard.
Just sit back and do nothing.
Don't sing with them.
Right. Don't try.
And they just come to you.
You're like catnip to these singers, I guess.
Yeah, I just...I just got it. I just sourced it.
Ooh! Yeah.
The tables have turned. He's a good one.
I can't believe I got him, guys.
He's incredible. He's awesome. Yeah, he's really good.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Wow. I'm a...I'm a little pissed off.
From zero to hero.
# Four, three, two, one, yeah
# My style is second to none... #
I am very competitive. I want to win.
I want to win.
Ronan is a massive threat on the coaching panel.
Between his solo career and his career with Boyzone,
he sold over 45 million records.
It pains me to say he's a music icon.
(LAUGHS)
# I'm the top dog
# I'm the top dog... #
Ronan brings everything and the kitchen sink to a pitch.
When it's a case of I want to win the artist,
the gloves are off.
He'll just say anything.
I'm practically a Queenslander.
My mother in law is from New Zealand.
My kids have Australian passports.
My wife's Australian.
If he tells everyone that his wife's Australian
one more (BLEEP) time, (SIGHS) I'm gonna smack him.
# This is The Voice. #
# This is The Voice. #
(JURASSIC PARK MUSIC)
I am a park ranger at a dinosaur theme park exhibition.
I'm sure it'll be fine.
There should be no issues.
Oh, my god. Oh, my god.
OK.
Could not ask for a better acting job.
But in my life at home is a little bit less scary.
Hi, my name is Lyla Fox.
I am 21 years old
and I am from Melbourne, Victoria.
So, I have many cats.
I have 27 cats.
I got these cats as rescues.
A lot of strays come into our backyard,
often times pregnant females.
That is how I ended up with 27.
(LAUGHS)
Pandora, Zeus, Elsa, Ariel,
Yoda, Tiger, Panda, Lilo, Stitch,
Star, Coco, Daisy, Bambi, Storm,
Dixie, Pearl, Bamboo, Bella, Fluffy.
Oh, yeah.
I think that's all of them, I think.
Yeah.
I love musical theatre with all my heart.
It is my biggest passion in the world.
Like, I act and perform every single day in the car,
on the way to work or on the way to my nonna's.
I would say my dream musical theatre role
is Elphaba from 'Wicked'.
The song I'm singing tonight for my Blind audition
is one of the most difficult musical theatre songs in the world.
'Defying Gravity' from 'Wicked'.
Big, big song.
I'm absolutely shaking in my boots right now.
The only thing I am thinking of heading out on that stage is
I have to hit that final note.
She's got this.
# Something has changed within me
# Something is not the same
# It's time to trust my instincts
# Close my eyes and leap
# I think I'll try defying gravity
# And you won't pull me down
# So, if you care to find me
# Look to the western sky
# As someone told me lately
# "Everyone deserves The chance to fly"... #
Please.
# Tell them how I am defying gravity
# I'm flying high, defying gravity
# And soon I'll match them in renown
# And nobody in all of Oz
# No Wizard that there is or was
# Is ever gonna bring
# Me down
# Oh, oh, oh, oh! #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Oh.
Oh, my gosh.
Hi. My name is Lyla Fox.
I am 21 years old and I am from Melbourne, Victoria.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Amazing.
So, what's your background with singing?
Do you sing musical theatre?
What do you... Where do you sing? Who do you sing to?
Yeah, so I definitely sing musical theatre.
And I sing a lot to my cats.
I have about 27 cats. So...
What? 27?
27? Yeah.
How? Why?
What I do is I rescue a lot of strays, so...
Oh, good for you. Yeah.
Come on.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
27 cats?
27. Yeah.
And do they...do they like your singing?
They absolutely love it.
They often sit on me for hours on end,
and I miss them so much.
Oh, well, look, I think you-you did a great job.
As soon as that song started, there's a high expectation coming.
Of course.
It's like you choose that song, you better nail it.
I actually think you've got a powerhouse voice.
I wasn't sure about some of your choices at the end
when you went to the higher note instead of the lower note.
I felt like I could hear a tiny bit of strain.
In a way, I would have preferred you stick to the melody and...
Yeah.
..deliver that with like, full throated conviction.
God, I'm regretting not pressing my buzzer.
To be honest, I'm regretting it. I'm an idiot.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
It's such a responsibility sitting in one of these chairs.
And, you know, sometimes you kind of don't know
what you're waiting for, you know?
And I think traditionally, musical theatre is very...
It's quite generic, you know, there's a generic sound.
Personally, the reason I didn't turn is like,
I want more personality.
Of course. I want to hear you.
So, please keep singing.
And, you know, maybe we'll see you again.
Thank you.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Get more cats.
Sing to more of them. Enough cats.
I think my mum will tell me off at that point.
(LAUGHTER)
(APPLAUSE)
That is one hell of a song to take on.
There's a handful of people that can sing that and pull it off.
So, for you to take that on, on The Voice stage,
it's just such a huge task.
I should have been able to hear past that
and know that if you had the right song,
you would have delivered.
Thank you so much.
I really appreciate all the feedback and I will take it on board.
Keep singing.
Come back, do it again
and I do believe you'll make it through.
Thank you so much.
I really appreciate. Well done. Well done.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
(SONG PLAYS IN BACKGROUND)
Oh. Thank you. Thank you for saying that.
Well done, well done. Keep going. Thank you so much.
(CROSSTALK)
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
I'm so proud of you, Lyla.
Well done.
It is really good.
So, I'm a little bummed, but I just...
I really liked what they said.
I'm super proud of you.
Yeah, I feel a little hurt on the inside,
but it's not going to discourage me from, like,
coming back next year and hopefully
fulfilling that dream of turning a chair.
It's OK. Really good.
That was a tough one. That was hard.
We are over thinking it, you know.
Yeah. And she took on too much.
Bit off more than she can chew.
I really hope she's not over thinking it, too,
because she's really, really good.
Yeah. Yeah.
She has 27 cats.
27 cats. That's a lot of cats.
I mean, in a way, I'm glad I didn't turn
because I'm allergic to cats.
Yes. Well.
And that could have been an issue. Yeah.
That could have been a huge problem.
Well.
Next...
There's a little bit of pressure to get it perfect.
Will another risky song choice...
'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston.
..pay off for this hopeful artist?
# There is life
# There is hope
# Keep singing. #
# This is The Voice. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Ronan.
I love you.
Hi, guys. How are you all?
There's someone in a Spice Girls shirt.
Where is she? She's somewhere in here.
Where's the Spice Girls? Over there, Melanie C.
Come to Australia!
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
When's the world tour?
I'm here, I'm here.
# Let your dreams chase you. #
My name is Hailey J.
I'm 19 years old
and I'm from Melbourne, Victoria.
I've been into music from as long as I can remember.
My whole family's musical.
My mum and dad have a show together.
The Whitney Houston tribute show.
I've been doing backing vocals for my mum for about five years now.
My mum, she's just such a powerhouse,
a literal goddess, such an inspiration.
And I always thought to myself, I want to be like that one day.
How do you feel?
Yeah, I mean, it's a weird feeling
'cause normally I'm doing backing vocals for you.
Yeah. Yeah.
And now you'll not gonna be on the stage.
It's an exciting feeling because it should be.
Yes.
Because now it's your turn
to step into the spotlight, you know?
And you're going to smash it.
And I know that for sure.
With your voice you're gonna do it.
Thank you. Great.
Yes, darling, we're so proud of you.
You've got this.
Remember, go to that secret place, hey.
Alright. Yeah.
My Blind audition song is a risk.
'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston.
It's a big song.
And knowing my mum has nailed the song so many times,
there's a little bit of pressure to get it perfect.
The trickiest part to get right in this song
is the emotion.
If I don't nail the emotion 100%,
there's a risk that the coaches might not turn.
This looks amazing.
(EXHALES)
You got this.
Yes.
# If... #
Oh-ho-ho.
Wow.
# I... #
OK.
# Should stay... #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
# I would only be in... #
Oh.
# Your way... #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Whoo-hoo.
# And...
# I will always love you
# I hope life treats you kind
# And I hope you have
# All you've dreamed of
# And I wish you joy
# And happiness... #
Come on!
# But above all this, I wish you love... #
Whoa!
# And I...
# Will always love you
# I will always love you
# I will always... #
Come on!
# Love you. #
Yes!
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Awesome.
Whoo-hoo!
Hello! Hi!
Oh, my gosh!
Congratulations. Thank you.
You should be really proud of that performance.
Yeah. Thank you so much.
Welcome to The Voice.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
What's your name?
My name is Hailey J.
I'm 19 years old and I'm from Melbourne, Victoria.
Wow.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Hailey, that was incredible.
And you should have seen
there was a reaction as soon as you went.
(VOCALISES)
We were like, "Really?"
You want to go there?
You really want to? Wow.
She's gonna go there? OK.
And for you to be 19 and say, "Yeah, I'm gonna sing that song."
That's exciting to me because you're gonna be fearless
and take all kinds of chances.
And if you're brave enough to tackle that song and nail it that way
then-then you're gonna be a real force to be reckoned with.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Thank you so much.
I so appreciate.
Before you choose Team Kate,
we're gonna hear a lot about
how Richard's worked with Luther Vandross
and Barbra Streisand,
how he's produced voices exactly like yours.
She's right. I have had the great honour of...
(LAUGHTER)
Of-of producing and writing for some really legendary singers.
And I got to work with Justin Timberlake and NSYNC
when they were young.
Wow.
And to watch the fearlessness that happens,
you have to have that if you really want to succeed.
And I think you have all of that.
And all I'll say is, I hope that we can work together.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Thank you so much. I so appreciate it.
I feel like that was extraordinarily
courageous of you to get up and do that song.
This is that song that everybody tries to do,
and there's only one.
Well, there's only one Dolly and there's only one Whitney.
You also had the courage
to not bang us over the head
with your huge level of emoting.
You know what I mean?
That's where that song normally goes wrong.
People try to be Whitney Houston and fail.
And you didn't. You had the courage to be yourself.
I feel that's the mark of a true artist.
That means so much. Thank you so much.
I think you really belong on Team Kate,
and we will choose beautiful songs
that reflect the absolute purity and emotion
that you showed us tonight.
Thank you, I loved it.
Thank you so much.
I feel quite foolish for not turning for you.
You are a beautiful singer,
but I just felt there was other people here
were probably better to mentor you.
You've got two incredible coaches to choose between here,
so, you're in good hands.
Thank you so much.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Decision time, right? Decision time. It's on you.
You got two incredible, incredible teams.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my gosh.
(TENSE MUSIC)
I think my gut is telling me to go with Richard.
(SONG PLAYS IN BACKGROUND)
You got it. Yes.
Good on you.
Thank you. It's so lovely to meet you.
Welcome. It's so great to meet you, too.
That was so beautiful.
Thank you. Really beautiful.
We can go this way.
# I know I'm right Where I'm supposed to be. #
Oh. Oh, my god.
Oh, my god.
You're a legend.
You're a legend.
For me, I was feeling quite emotional
when I heard Hailey singing
and so yeah, just to see those chairs turn brought
so much relief, and happiness and absolute joy...
I love you. ..for Hailey. Yeah.
# This is The Voice. #
# This is The Voice. #
# So, give me something good... #
I'm LuLu. I'm Nina.
I'm Wren.
And we are Vixens of Fall.
And we are sisters.
(LAUGHTER)
We are a country music band.
And we perform at festivals all around Queensland.
How are you feeling, girls?
Nervous. Yep.
Nervous, but I'm ready.
You're ready? You're ready?
I'm ready. Yes, we are all ready.
We got this. We have the power of three.
We're just gonna perform like we always do.
We're gonna do a boogie.
We're gonna sing a ling.
And hopefully turn some chairs.
Yes.
# They'll remember my name Before I'm done
# Light 'em up yeah, one by one... #
Tonight we are singing
one of the most popular songs in country music.
# Come on... #
'Jolene', by the one and only Dolly Parton.
We are doing a lot of tough harmonies tonight.
And like, one bad note can throw the whole experience.
And that's the blessing and the curse of being a trio.
Absolutely.
You can do it, girls.
Is that more than one set of footsteps?
Sounds like multiple footsteps.
Multiple. That's more than one person, right?
Maybe a band.
More than one foot. Yeah. Sounds like it.
Interesting.
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# I'm begging of you
# Please don't take my man... #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
# Your beauty is beyond compare
# With flaming locks of auburn hair
# With ivory skin And eyes of emerald green
# Your smile is like A breath of spring
# Your voice is soft like Summer rain
# And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
# He talks about you in his sleep
# There's nothing I can do to keep
# From crying when he calls Your name, Jolene
# And I can easily understand
# How you could easily take my man
# But you don't know What he means to me, Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Jolene
# Please don't take him
# Even though you can. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Oh. Hi.
Who are you guys?
What's your name? What's the group name?
Individually?
I'm LuLu. I'm Nina.
I'm Wren. And we are Vixens of Fall.
Very cool.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Sorry you didn't get any turns.
I thought it was incredibly brave.
Big song to take on.
I struggled with the harmonies.
And coming from a group myself,
it's incredibly important you listen to each other.
And I felt there was a lot of individual singing going on
and not listening to each other.
And I think that's why we had that clash,
quite a few clashes in there.
And it's...
How long have you been doing this?
We've been focusing on
doing this for about nine years, I think, yeah.
OK. Yeah.
And is this a song that you sing together a lot?
Yeah, it is. It is.
It is. OK.
Yeah. Well, maybe. OK.
The nerves obviously. You know... Yeah, it was...
It had to be nerves. It's gotta be nerves.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
It's completely understandable.
Like, you step onto that stage and it's
so intimidating and the lights are blinding
and all of a sudden you can't get your breath.
If there was one piece of constructive feedback
I'd give you get a little huddle
before you come on stage and breathe together
and really ground yourself
so you can, like, synchronise your nervous systems.
Yeah.
It really did come down to-to breathing, I think.
And because that's directly linked-linked to pitch,
even the very first note of the song
was slightly out of tune.
And it's sort of just such a shame
because that sort of sets the frame for the whole thing.
And I feel a, I feel a bit awkward about that.
So... (CROSSTALK)
Hey, listen.
Everybody is entitled to a bad night
or a bad performance.
Everybody has them.
You've also obviously had nights where you crushed it.
Don't beat yourself up too much about it.
Everybody has a bad has a...has a possibility of a bad performance.
Don't-don't trip on it too hard.
Thank you.
(SONG PLAYS IN BACKGROUND)
I think it's harder for groups to get chair turns
because they've got so much more to do
and to impress us with.
One of the key things about being in a group is your harmonies.
You know, you really have to listen to each other.
You really have to blend.
# I've been chasing every dream To the extreme... #
Ultimately, you're only as good as your weakest member, you know?
So, if one person is getting rattled by nerves
or has a bit of a bad day,
that can really throw the whole thing off.
# Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker
# With flowers in my hair
# When the head of state Didn't play guitar night
# Not everybody drove a car
# When music really mattered And when the radio was king
# Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker
# With flowers in my hair
# In '77 and '69, Revolution was in the air
# I was born too late Into a world that doesn't care
# Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker With flowers in my hair. #
It's really hard to not turn around.
I'm sorry you didn't get any-any chairs turning.
That's OK. We've absolutely loved it.
It's been so much fun. Yeah.
Just getting to sing for you guys has been a dream, so.
Thank you.
You gave yourselves quite a hard job.
You know, what you did was beautiful,
and it was so, so close.
But you're very exposed.
You know, you started acapella,
you know, and I think especially when those nerves kick in as well,
you can start if you lose a little bit of pitch,
a little bit of timing.
So, there's nowhere to hide.
If I can let you take anything away,
you need to listen to each other more
because they were the biggest downfall
in that performance.
Were those moments that you clashed?
That's why I didn't turn.
There were some really pretty moments,
some beautiful moments.
There's a stronger singer in the duo,
and you guys have to figure that out.
And then the person who supports the lead singer,
your harmonies have to be on point.
I think as coaches, it's our responsibility to make sure
we give that artist something
positive to go away with and work on and fix
and maybe think about coming back.
My name is Brandon.
I'm Darren. I'm Cliff.
And together we are...
3PM.
We think we can definitely bring something unique to The Voice,
but with three people, there comes that extra scrutiny.
If we don't hit our harmonies, sound excellent together,
it'll all sound off.
Yeah, lads.
Oh. "Lads" he said. Yeah.
So, more than one.
# Yeah. #
Oh.
# Well, the truth
# Yeah, it hurts to say
# I'm gonna pack up my bags
# And I'm gonna go away
# I'm gonna split
# I can't stand it
# I'm gonna give it up and quit
# Ain't never comin' back
# Girl but before I get to go and I got to say
# I thought you used to love me
# But that was yesterday
# And the truth I won't fight it
# When the love starts burnin' You got to do what's right
# Lover, lover, lover
# You don't treat me no good no more
# Oh, no more
# Lover, lover, lover
# You don't treat me no good no more
# Now, before I get-get-get to go And I got to say
# Now, before I get-get-get to go And I got to say
# Lover, lover, lover
# You don't treat me no good no more
# Oh, oh
# Yeah
# Lover, lover, lover
# You don't treat me no good no more
# You don't treat me good, baby
# Lover, lover, lover
# You don't treat me No good no more. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Nicely done, gentlemen.
Well done. Guys, well done.
How you doing? What's your names?
My name is Brandon. I'm Darren.
And I'm Cliff. And together we are 3PM.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
3PM.
Am I the only one who turned for these dudes?
You are.
Wow. OK, first of all, congratulations.
I thought that was really fun and really well done.
And congratulations for being on The Voice
and delivering that.
Yeah. Thank you so much.
Thank you, Richard. Thank you.
I really did love that.
You started off a little bit shaky.
But I thought your voices blended together beautifully,
and I could hear these tiny little individual flourishes,
but they worked together coherently with the whole.
There was a part of me missing that I have to admit that the bass.
# You don't treat me No good no more... #
You know that, dude. Yeah, yeah.
But you know, that's just my personal issue.
But I don't think you could have a better coach than Richard.
You've lucked out. 100. 100%.
Thanks, guys.
I'll just say this quickly
because I don't need to pitch anymore.
But I want to tell you now in front of everybody why I turned.
Today, we heard siblings.
They couldn't harmonise with each other.
You guys aren't even related.
I don't think, and nailed it.
Like, really, really nailed it and I didn't...
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
I mean, yeah, I always give the first eight bars of something.
The first couple lines of something, I give it a pas
because you're nervous, you're getting your sound.
But you guys were fun.
Your pocket, your rhythmic pocket was really dead on.
And I loved that.
I could sort of hear not only a really great blend,
but individual singers who I would love to work with.
You guys could go all the way, and I'm really happy to have you.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Richard. Really appreciate that.
Well done, guys. Keep it up.
Well done.
It's a pleasure, man. It's all my pleasure.
Welcome to Team Richard, man.
Thank you.
Thank you, Richard I appreciate it.
Come on. Come with me.
Congratulations. Thank you so much, man.
Congratulations. Thank you.
Congratulations. Appreciate it.
We'll see you soon. Yeah.
Can't wait. We're gonna have fun.
Yeah. Thank you.
(CROSSTALK)
Amazing. I'm feeling fantastic.
I'm so happy with my boys, my brothers,
you know, we've been singing together for a while,
so it's just nice to be here together doing this song.
Yeah, I'm overwhelmed.
Richard! (CHEERING)
Yes.!
I love harmonies, I love really beautiful harmonies.
And I just love boy bands like my friend Ronan's.
I think Ronan didn't turn because he still has boy band PTSD.
I absolutely do.
I don't want to be anywhere near a boy band.
Coming up, the blocks are back.
I, with the push of the button,
can block one or all of the other coaches.
Will Richard be the first coach to use one?
I'll work with you as a singer.
I'm ready to block this guy.
No you can't.
No, no, no, no, you can't block me.
I came to win.
# This is The Voice. #
# This is the chance We got to dance... #
I don't remember not wanting to be a singer.
There was never a time when I was a little boy
where I was like,
"Well, I'm gonna be a fireman."
It was always, "I'm gonna sing."
I was the singing shoe shop salesman.
I would hum as I...as I sold my shoes.
It's what I love to do. I love to sing.
Any-any break, that's what I wanted to do.
I just wanted to be heard. I wanted to be seen.
(SONG PLAYS IN BACKGROUND)
I used to deliver newspapers
trudging around in the rain, shoving them into letterboxes.
But in my heart, I wanted to be a songwriter.
I mean, it seemed like such an outlandish dream.
# This is the chance... #
I worked in a chippy in a little town.
And people who grew up in that area
don't expect to become pop stars.
It was really unlikely that it was gonna happen to me.
I grew up in a small town in PNG called Bulolo.
You either do mining or forestry.
I did forestry 'cause my grandad my dad, were in the forest industry.
# I'm not the enemy... #
I felt I was forced to doing it.
# There's then this whispering... #
I wanted to do music in life, and-and I said to myself,
"I'm gonna be somewhere else one day,"
and here I am.
# I'm chasing you through The silence in the rain... #
My name is Chris Cobb, 35,
originally from Papua New Guinea
but based in the Sunshine Coast.
It's a bit of a big moment for me doing music full time.
So, you're here now, huh.
I can't believe it. I feel like it's a...it's a dream.
Actually, can you pinch me?
Pinch. Ow, ow, OK.
It's not a dream. It's not a dream.
My family is super supportive.
And so dad is ready to get out and do some music.
Bye, daddy. Bye, daddy.
My family and I have a special connection to Ronan
because my wife's cousin sister is married to Ronan.
I hope Ronan recognises me, (LAUGHS)
but if he doesn't, that's OK too.
I guess there is a chance if I get too nervous,
that if it gets to me,
I'd-I'd be stunned and I would freeze.
But I...but I can't afford to.
I have to hold it in.
Daddy.
# When the war is over
# Got to get away... #
I love this song.
I love this song.
# Pack my bag best to no place,
# In no time, no day... #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
# You and I, We used each other's shoulders
# Still so young, But somehow so much older
# How can I go home And not get blown away... #
Oh, come on, let's go.
# Ain't nobody gonna Steal this heart away
# Ain't nobody gonna Steal this heart away
# Ain't nobody gonna
# Steal this heart away
# Ain't nobody gonna
# Steal this heart away. #
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Yeah!
Whoo-hoo-hoo!
Wow.
That's quite a smile you got there, buddy.
Hey, buddy.
Hey. I know you.
No way. This is Chris.
Everybody say hi to Chris.
Hi, Chris.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Tell everybody about you, Chris.
I'm... It's not about me. Yeah.
This is a very mysterious story already.
Yeah.
My name is Chris Cobb, and I'm 35.
Originally from Papua New Guinea
and based here in the Sunshine Coast,
beautiful country.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
So, my wife's family are from Papua New Guinea.
Honest to god, I mean it, I mean it, I mean it.
I can't trust anything that you say.
Honestly.
And Chris is partner to-to my...to my wife's cousin.
What?
No way. Oh.
No way. Hey, guys.
How are you? Good.
(LAUGHS) Oh, my goodness.
I'm...I'm...I'm very emotional, I'm sorry.
This is beautiful.
I had no idea. I had no idea.
(APPLAUSE)
That was a beautiful performance.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
I love that song.
I mean, it's...it's...it's a classic here,
but especially when John Farnham covered it years ago.
So, I hold a certain benchmark to that song,
the way John Farnham sang it.
I was thinking, "Oh, boy,
"this guy's got his work cut out for him."
And you crushed it.
You absolutely crushed it. Yeah.
Thank you. You're so good.
Chris, what's your...what's your what's your background?
How long have you been singing? Give us a little brief life story.
Um, I've always loved singing at a very young age,
and I had to...I had to work,
make ends meet in the forest industry in PNG.
With music as my parallel, that I've taken the leap of faith
and pursued my dreams of music, coming to Australia.
Good for you, man.
And I would love you to be on my team.
But I feel like even though you have a relationship with-with this guy,
I think you know that I would be a great coach for you.
Thank you.
I loved that performance.
And, you know, turning around and then that big smile.
I mean, it was just so wonderful.
And I'd love to work with that voice.
I think I need someone like you on Team Melanie.
Keep that in mind.
(APPLAUSE)
So, many great voices have sung that song.
But what I loved is that you really made it your own.
Mm, yeah.
And you didn't push too hard.
There was this beautiful intimacy about your delivery.
I sang recently with Ian Moss. Mossy.
So, yeah, obviously if you join Team Kate,
we can go back and call him now.
I'll tell him what a great job you did.
You guys can have a chat. He's a lovely guy.
And I would absolutely love to have you on my team.
Team Kate.
Thanks, Kate. Thank you. Kate.
Oh, man.
You know, I'm a fan of your voice.
You've got a gorgeous tone in your voice, I love it.
I don't know what to do here.
This is crazy because I feel, you know, if you go anywhere else,
I'm going to be so hurt.
Holy moly. But yeah, I mean. Like...
Chris, I swear I'm ready to, like, block this guy.
And I actually...
No, you can't.
No, no, no, no, you can't block me, guys.
# This is The Voice. #
# This is The Voice. #
Oh, man.
I don't know what to do here.
This is crazy because I feel,
you know, if you go anywhere else, I'm going to be so hurt.
Holy moly. But yeah, I mean. Like...
Chris, I swear I'm ready to, like, block this guy.
And I actually... No, you can't.
No, no, no, no, you can't block me, guys.
But-but I would feel awful.
No you couldn't. And-and I feel like...
There's going to be family pressure here.
OK.
You know, you don't pick me.
Well, you might... She might not marry you.
(LAUGHTER)
OK. Do you want to coach him... I mean you know, be-be careful.
Do you want...
Would you like to work with a coach who emotionally blackmails you?
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
Or do you want someone
who truly support you and nurture your artistry?
That's their choice.
This is...this is really tricky.
I didn't know how tricky it was until
I got-got up on the stage.
Oh.
I mean, in terms of pitch, man.
Richard, you really sold, like, a really good pitch.
And I've-I've also been drawn by listening
to your book 'Stories to Tell'.
Oh, thank you, man.
I swear there's a battle.
So, the coach I'm going to go with is...
(AUDIENCE SHOUT)
Don't you dare.
(LAUGHS)
Chris. Chris! Chris! Chris!
Chris, listen to me.
I want you to use your free will.
But I will say this. I will say this.
If you choose correctly, I'll smooth it over with this one.
No, he won't. No, he won't.
Oh, you produce my next album. OK, fine.
Oh, fine. OK.
Twist my arm.
I... (LAUGHS)
Right, Chris.
The coach I'm gonna go with is...
(AUDIENCE SCREAM)
I'm gonna go with Ronan.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
Yeah! You're so lucky.
I thought he was going with him.
I thought he was, too. I thought he was going.
You're so lucky.
Awesome, buddy.
(UPBEAT MUSIC)
What a...
I have no idea you were gonna be here.
Oh, man. How are you?
Good.
(LAUGHTER) Hey.
Mwah. Oh, my god.
How amazing was he? So, good.
So, proud of him. I had no idea.
I had no idea. I wasn't expecting it.
Well done. He absolutely smashed it.
What a beautiful vocal performance.
And I actually thought you were gonna go to Richard.
You had me there.
I was close.
(LAUGHTER)
You can't say that.
Alright, let's be honest.
He got guilted into that.
Yeah, it's like nepotism.
They're basically related.
You never know whether to believe Ronan (LAUGHS)
because so much crap comes out of his mouth.
And then every now and again, he's like, Oh, really?
My wife's...my wife's from New Jersey, actually.
Yeah, yeah.
And thank you so much, everyone.
I love you.
Love you too. I love you too.
Well done.
(APPLAUSE) Whoo.
You know how close I came to blocking you.
He said to me...he said to me back there,
"I nearly went with Richard."
(APPLAUSE)
Not cool.
