Bleh!

There's an old saying, curiosity killed the cat.

Or was it the cat burglar?

My file from the agency.

The life and times of Darian Fox.

Things I was proud of.

Things I wanted to forget.

Some things I never even knew.

That's right.

Taxi Maya was cheating on me.

The Invisible Man.

Aqua Mama.

Guess I should have guessed.

Who did you expect?

I don't know. Someone I could trust.

Bad news.

You're all out of those.

It looks like you're getting a little touch of what I occasionally get.

You know, I got a friend I can hook you up with. They got stuff for you.

Occupational hazard.

Let's just say Kosovo is a little rough this time of year.

So, this was good. I enjoyed it. Where'd you cook this from?

I stole it from your agency.

Our doctor did.

Even we don't know that much about you.

We? You mean that organization thing?

Chrysalis. That's the real name of the organization.

You should know that now.

Why?

You got me here.

Where's the sniper?

If we wanted you dead, you'd be dead.

I'm here to try to help you.

Help me what?

Help you stay alive.

Did you read about solution beta?

Someone went ahead and blacked it out. Do you believe that?

Well, there's something under the black that you need to see.

Let me guess. You can show me.

Okay, I'm walking away now, right? You really want to help me? Don't shoot me

the back.

You know, you once asked me if I regretted it, what they did to me.

What do you want, huh?

What, would you come out here to bond with me? You need a hug or something?

I regret what they did to me, okay?

Good, because it's nothing compared to what they're going to do to you.

You want to learn about solution beta?

Get in the car.

Only problem with that is that would require me trusting you, you know?

All right, you want to take your chances?

Good luck and go to hell.

Because you know what?

I don't need to bond with you, okay?

We already did that when they cut us open and they took out the part that

us normal.

They say he who sucks with the devil needs a long spoon. Yeah, well... I was

making dinner reservations for two.

There once was a story about a man who could turn invisible.

I thought it was only a story.

Until it happened to me.

Okay, so here's how it works. There's this stuff called quicksilver that can

bend lights.

Some scientists made it into a synthetic gland, and that's where I came in.

See, I was facing life in prison, and they were looking for a human

So, we made a deal.

They put the gland in my brain, I walk free.

The operation was a success, but that's where everything started to go wrong.

Francis Bacon, a guy who heard voices, said that there's nothing that makes a

man suspect more than to know little. Well, right now I suspected everything,

I wanted to learn as much as I could. This is Chrysalis, huh?

This is the McMillan building. We're going to the 27th floor.

This is Cerberus Sentinel. It's a private security firm that handles

for the world's most powerful corporations.

We maintain an alert network and also offer a paramilitary guard training

program.

It's always good.

So, in other words, this is a front for Christmas.

One of many. Bet you'll never be able to prove that.

Look, the deal was that you were going to tell me what was in the file. You

remember that?

The answer's on floor 30.

Suit yourself.

Okay, fine, fine.

Darian, if we wanted you dead... I'd be dead. I know, I know. You keep saying

that as if it's supposed to wash all my worries away.

You don't mean you could want me tortured or brainwashed? What I want is

you the truth.

But I'd be lying if I said it isn't going to hurt.

Mr.

Fawkes, welcome to Cerberus Sentinel. I'm Jarrett Stark.

Cerberus, pardon me, my Greek mythology is a little bit rusty, but that's the

guy who guarded the gates of hell, right?

Hades, actually. Well, hell, Hades, schmades, you know, same concept, right?

Well, actually, hell is where you pay for your sins. Hades is just a resting

place for lost souls.

Take a load off.

Look, guys, come on, there's really no reason to be polite. I mean, you know,

are enemies.

Well, that's why you're here.

Some opponents are so dangerous, they become valuable.

So what are you guys saying? Just, why can't we all get along? Is that it?

Oh, something like that.

Yeah, well, forget it, all right?

Why? Because you're the bad guys.

Are we? Yeah.

When the U .S. bombed Hiroshima, they killed thousands but saved millions.

The end justifies the means.

I don't agree with that.

Sure you do.

You say so every time you cash your paycheck.

Yeah, well, let me tell you something, okay? It's not my choice to work for the

government. Oh, of course not.

We know about counteragent, Darian.

Keep you on a pretty tight leash, don't they?

In fact, you have no idea how short that leash really is.

Okay, now I'm starting to worry.

Oh, so he's late.

So what?

But it's Monday.

It's counteragent day. He's never late for that.

He has failed to check in on any secure line of communication.

We have a serious problem.

Thought I should bring this to your attention right away.

It's your paycheck.

Check the deductions, sir.

Federal, new state, if I can pay.

And this.

Play glass window.

Eight hundred bucks.

What is that? Robert, did you or did you not throw an enemy operative through a

plate glass window at the end of your last assignment?

This is the end of this, Charlie Brown. If you know what's good for you... All

right, Bobby, Bobby, take it easy.

You're just right.

The mission was over.

You're being docked for unnecessary destruction of private property. Please,

mean, it was clearly in the context of the line of duty, sir. I am begging you.

I'm sorry, Bobby. So you got it. Don't nickel and dime at me with this stuff,

sir. It's the line of duty. I'm sorry.

Stop throwing people through windows. Don't!

Darian is missing.

Fox went AWOL?

Yes. Yeah, he dropped off the radar.

Lobby, track him down. You know how.

I know how.

That's not a problem.

This! This is not over!

He hasn't taken his meds.

I would say so.

Sorry, guys, I'm not buying it. Wait a minute, what don't you buy?

Well, it doesn't make any sense. I mean, why would they want to take the gland

out? To put it in someone who shares their agenda.

A willing sheep, willing to follow orders without question.

It makes sense.

Did you read what your boss thought about you in the file?

Yeah.

Hey, come on, just because me and the official don't see eye to eye doesn't

he wants to kill me, you know?

Believe me, Charlie Borden may be the devil, but he's no murderer.

He's as much a murderer as you are, Darian.

Tell me something, how many men have you killed, for God and country anyway?

Let's see, I think that would be none.

I think Dr. Carver would disagree with that. That was an accident.

And the chameleon wasn't?

Self -defense, I don't have a choice.

You have a choice, Darian. And your boss makes a choice every single day to keep

you under his thumb.

Charlie Borden is just a name and a hat.

You haven't even begun to scratch his surface.

He's too cheap.

Yeah.

He's too cheap to pull this off. I mean, believe me, there's no way the agency

would have enough money to fund a gland transplant. The agency received a $10

million reward for catching the chameleon. Know what became of it?

Neither do we.

Don't you think that money should have been earmarked to fund a safe way to

remove the gland, like the official promised you?

And that woman who keeps you in line, your keeper, do you trust her? Her

Claire, and she saved my life more than once, thank you very much.

She saved the Gland more than once.

What's her last name?

What's her last name? What's yours, okay? Darian, Solution Beta comes with a

list of names, potential recipients for the Gland.

One of those men, Tim Kirby, happens to live here in this city.

Talk to him, he'll corroborate the truth.

Darian?

We need you.

And we just want to help you.

Can I go? You guys done?

You don't have to ask permission. You're a free man here.

Talk to Tim Kirby. You'll trust him.

After all, he works for your government.

The Bible gives this sensible advice.

Separate thyself from thine enemies and take heed of thy friends.

It's easy enough.

If you know how to tell the two apart.

You fine? No, I did not.

Frankly, I'm a little worried about it.

It's not in any of his usual haunts.

Thrift shop.

Beauty supplier.

Hello.

I decided to take the morning off, you know.

Bowl a few games.

You want to bowl?

Yeah.

I like to bowl. You like to bowl. I do. Yeah, you rent them on your own shoes.

Rent.

Where'd you bowl?

Oakview. Oakview.

Oakview. What did you bowl?

Yeah, what'd you bowl?

170, 175, and a Dutch 200.

You expect me to buy that?

That you bowl a Dutch 200?

It's the day I run the Boston Marathon.

Where the hell have you been?

Bowling.

Shot. Now.

You spoil me rotten.

Oh, hey.

Actually, you know, this morning as I was bowling, I got to thinking. You

remember the 10 million bucks we got for the chameleon reward?

Oh, yeah. What about it? What happened to that? I mean...

Obviously, they'd spend it on us. That's true. He's got a point there, boss.

What about that? Shouldn't we be getting, like, a bonus for that? Some

little cash, you know, a little under -the -table thing? I'll ink on that page

and dry it.

Ink's not dry. What's that supposed to mean?

It means I've got work to do.

That most?

Yes, sir.

Whatever you say.

Bobby.

Something is up with him.

Hey, Claire. I know it's been kind of a while since I've bugged you about this,

but have you made any kind of progress in figuring out how to get the gland out

of my hand?

No. I can take it out any time I want.

With one unfortunate side effect. Did it kill you?

Yeah, and how would you feel about that?

About what?

My being dead.

I certainly wouldn't miss these fun conversations.

What's wrong?

Nothing. Hey, what's your last name?

Why do you want to know this?

I just want to know, you know. I like to call my friends by their last name, you

know.

Call Hobbs Hobbs. He calls me Fox.

Want to be able to walk in here and say, hey, yo, Brewster, what up?

Well, you can rest assured it's not Brewster.

Come on, Claire, it's a really...

That strange a request to know your last name?

You can turn invisible. I can't. The more classified my identity remains, the

safer I feel.

Come on, just you and me, right here.

Hobbs, any of us don't know either. Now give me your arm before this stuff goes

bad.

The agency had put up the biggest stone wall outside of China.

So I figured if they wouldn't talk, the archives would.

A little bedtime reading, huh, Fox?

No, no, no. Actually, just catching up on some paperwork here. Paperwork?

That's nice.

What's your excuse?

Me? No excuse.

Just had a hunch.

Yeah? Just had a feeling someone was going to break in, poke their nose where

don't belong.

Good thing it's just me, huh? Yeah, good thing.

Real good thing.

You know what?

I think I'm done for tonight here.

I'm going to go crash.

They already have.

So this is where it starts, huh? I got you red -handed going through agency

files. Please, please, will you just stop it with the righteous act, all

It's called espionage, my friend.

That's right. Better known as treason. Treason? Hey, you're the traitor.

I'm a traitor? That's right, you're the traitor. No, you're a traitor. You're

the traitor. I ain't no traitor. You're a traitor. You are the traitor. I ain't

no traitor. I thought you were my friend. I am!

What are you talking about?

What?

You don't... What?

You really don't know what I'm talking about, do you? What's the matter with

you?

You're okay. I'm fine.

You're whacked. If you don't tell me what's going on, I'm going to shoot you

right in the elbow.

Here you go.

Hey,

hold on.

Pop that open there, right there. Check that out, right there.

How about that for you?

Boom, right there. It's a commanding reward.

That's $10 million.

That's right. Stashed away in a land of cuckoo clocks and hot chocolate.

It's the official's dirty laundry.

Or laundering? What is that? Showed me $800 for a window.

Fat. How'd you know to look for this?

Well, that's kind of a long story.

Starting it this morning.

So you think it was a chick from... Was it... Crystallite?

Chrysalis.

Chrysalis? No.

Chrysalis. Christmas?

No, not Christmas. It's Chrysalis.

I got it. Chris, listen.

Do you believe her?

Honestly, I don't know who to believe anymore.

I'm going to find out. You want to help?

Well, you know, I could, but, you know, it's like sometimes in my mind... Are

you busy? You're busy? I could... There are things in my life I... Bobby

Hobbs.

Yeah.

He's here.

In bed.

Asleep in his rinky -dink little apartment.

You want me to wake him?

Okay.

I'll see you tomorrow then, Chief.

Hope you know what you're doing.

Next to us.

All right, what's the next move?

You ready for this? Yeah.

One of the suitable candidates to replace me lives here in town.

I'm going to go check it out.

You in?

You're asking me? That's what I'm saying. I could be in.

High five. Please. What did I tell you about that?

Low five.

Well, I don't know where that came from. I know, man. It was an instinct.

That's embarrassing. But I know it's low. It's down here, man.

I'm cool. Down low?

That's right. Too slow?

That's right. How about this game? Wait.

Remember that one?

Huh? I used to be good at it. Wait, give me a minute.

Hello.

I was a champ.

What was that called? It was like fast.

Fast hands.

Ah, hey.

Tim Kirby?

Yeah, my name's Darian Fox. I was just wondering.

You may want to reconsider this. I'm a grandmaster on Wushu, and I'm actually

trained with the CIA, okay?

Oh, you too, huh?

Folks, what are you doing?

Yes,

sir. We can take care of that.

Hold on a second.

You had to kill him, didn't you? That was a very important call. Cover your

little crack.

Ebert's redial.

problem, fat man.

You're a little late.

I know everything.

That's it. We're talking solution beta.

I mean, so it's true.

Tell me that.

A complete dossier.

Solution beta.

A planned procedure to harvest the Quicksilver gland and transplant it to

another host in the event of your untimely death.

It's a contingency plan, just in case.

We've already successfully executed it. The gland carrier before you.

Semicol.

Yes.

You are solution beta, Darian.

Look, son.

I know what you think. You think I'm a slick, two -faced...

A bureaucrat who manipulates and schemes to get his own way. And you'd be right.

I make no secret of who I am. Is that supposed to comfort me?

My job is to protect the nation, not cheer you up.

Well said, sir.

Shut up, Ebert.

How'd you guys know I even had this file?

We first became suspicious when I noticed several files out of place this

morning. The question is, how did you know to look for it?

Well, uh, Chris was told.

What?

Sorry, partner.

They did have a real number on you this time. What are you talking about?

Found it at Kirby's house, from which I had to take a cab, and I have the

receipt, EBITS.

I better get reimbursed for that.

What is it?

The facts for Tim Kirby.

There's an effect named Fox that's been sent to kill him.

The car that hit him looked like one of ours.

It wasn't, but it looked real close.

What are you saying? That they wanted me to think it was you?

They killed a guy just to sell the car.

Idiots, you should have saw that.

I knew they'd make a move on Fox sooner or later. Yeah, it's like the Cold War

all over again.

Yeah, if it's just they won, they picked the wrong opponents. Tell them, Chief.

We both just shut the hell up, please. This isn't a game, okay? This guy is

dead. Right here. Tim Kirby, he's dead.

All right, what do you suggest we do?

Get revenge.

That's right. You get in there.

How?

Chrysalis wants a double agent.

Let's get him a double agent.

I'm here for Jared Stark.

Name? Darian Fox.

Welcome to Hades.

What's your offer?

You're safe now, Darian.

Know that. Hell no, Vance, but... I think I'll feel safe when I'm out of

spy racket for good.

That day is coming soon for all of us.

Trust me.

Our first priority will be retrieving and duplicating Counter Agent, and you

will be in charge of your own supply.

About time.

Before that, you're going to have to prove yourself.

We believe in throwing our people into the deep end, seeing how they swim.

Cool. I swim like a shark. Oh, that should be right up your alley, then.

It involves Alianora.

Yeah?

We'd like you to, uh, take her out.

Yeah. I know, I've been thinking about that, too, you know, but I don't know.

There's just, there's really no chemistry.

You're not talking about a date, are you?

Why?

She had orders to kill you and failed.

Oh. In Santa Ruega? And again at our cryo facility. She's reckless and

She's not in sync with our agenda.

Yeah, yeah, about that.

What exactly is, you know, our agenda? Are you going to do this or not?

I don't know. You know, I mean, I don't even have a gun or anything. I think

you're very nasty.

You shouldn't have to pull the trigger more than once, although we recommend

double taps to center mass.

Any other questions?

Sooner you get this over with, Darian, sooner we get on with it.

I'd like to put more mayonnaise on it.

They want me to shoot her.

Who? I don't even know her.

The mermaid?

Yeah.

Show you how.

Oh, man. Star said he wanted me to shoot her center mass.

Right in the fish tank?

Right in the big water tank, right?

No, that's a saccade.

That's what I was thinking. No.

I just want to touch you. All right.

She's probably like a bulletproof vest. Maybe.

Maybe. I thought you just said they do angles, folks. You always got to think

angles, my friend.

There's all kinds of angles.

You know, they just come at you.

You know, you've got to be ready in life.

You've got to be on both toes.

Angles. One.

What?

The mermaid's in on it, right?

They just want to see if you pull the trigger.

Two.

She's not in on it. They really want it dead. They just want to see if you've

got the guts.

Three.

They voted her to kill you.

But she won't.

Why?

Why? Why? Because she likes you.

Okay? So they want to see if you'll pull a gun on her. So she's got no choice.

She's got to take you out.

See?

What do I do?

I don't know.

What do you mean you don't know?

What are you looking at me for?

You just don't overthink it.

See, your problem is you overthink things, and then you get like a

web of tangled thoughts in your mind. You can't function like that.

You close your mouth.

God.

Hey, Allie.

Do I have to get used to that?

Me gone your alley?

Oh, yeah.

You know, when you stormed out of Stark's office, I didn't think you were

back. Well, that's a pretty rude way to... Yeah. At least you know where you

stand. That's the truth. It's a good thing, right?

I think you're going to like working with me.

I don't know about that. My last partner was much better looking.

Come on. Give me a chance. Maybe I'll change your mind.

All right.

How about tonight?

Your place or mine?

Well, various of my places. How about yours?

Eight o 'clock?

Deal.

Tennessee Williams said we have to distrust each other. Come in.

It's our only defense against betrayal.

Hey. Hey.

Well, maybe that's why instead of being dressed to kill, she was dressed like an

armored tank.

Nice sweater.

Oh, thanks.

Aren't you a little hot there?

Oh, well, that's up to you.

Let's eat.

Let's not.

Oh, aren't you hungry?

Oh, yeah, I'm hungry.

I just want to skip the dessert.

What's wrong? What's the matter?

I just don't want you to get the wrong idea.

What are you talking about, wrong idea? First time we kissed, you tried to kill

me, huh?

Well, now we got to play by the rules, is that what you say?

My rules, yeah.

Just so you know...

Shyness only works for nice girls.

Are you always this romantic?

No, I don't get out much.

No kidding.

Come here.

Come on.

Give me a little shake. Come on.

Come on.

You know what? This was a mistake.

Why don't you see yourself out?

But I haven't shot you yet.

What?

Your buddy Stark sent me here to whack you.

You're lying.

No.

You are.

And you're not very good.

Get out.

But, boy, you know what?

I never liked Hess much anyway, so why don't we just get this one over with,

huh? No, no, Darian, don't.

Darian. By the way, this was fun.

I'll call you.

Congratulations,

Darian. It was your first test.

You aced it.

Welcome to Chrysalis.

You okay?

It seems I won our little bet.

Congratulations. So it was option A, wasn't it?

It was option A.

It was a test.

I just wanted to see if you had the cojones.

I guess so. Right?

I did that.

And the mermaid was in on it.

Yeah.

She was in on it. All right. Well, you did good, Grasshopper.

You got in there. You passed the test. You're in.

I was just worried about how long that's going to last.

That's okay. We're stepping things up.

What are you talking about? The official wants you to make a copy of Stark's

hard drive.

I'm not going to do that.

Put this into the computer, run the program.

That thing will hack through anything, all right? Hack through the Amazon

if it has to.

I got a special for you. You getting any trouble?

I got your back.

Thanks, man.

Fire until he appears.

Right here. I have to say, Darian, I am very disappointed in you.

Me too.

Can we just ask what happened to trusting each other?

I didn't want to believe it, but Alinor was convinced that you were not what you

seemed. I rigged the security system to note any sudden drops in temperature.

The Quicksilver let us write to you.

You have no idea what you've given up.

Take it to holding.

Prep him for surgery.

You don't have to rush me, Mike.

Fox missed the check in time.

Let's move.

It's not often that I make a mistake, Mr. Fox.

In fact, this whole affair has been a great embarrassment for me.

Sorry about that. I wish I...

Could have been more useful.

It's okay. You still have another chance.

In fact, your agency was kind enough to provide us with directions on just how

to get the most of you. A gland recipient is on its way as we speak.

Hey, how you doing?

Hey.

Lieutenant.

You're not on the list.

It's your authorization code.

You want a code? I'll give you a code, gentlemen.

I think the code is AK... I can't quite see it. Did you say AK -40 -something?

Yeah, 47.

Yeah, excuse me. I'm just going to do a little painting. Gentlemen.

Security breach.

Watch him.

Call me when they're ready.

Darian Fox laughs moments.

I wish I had something nice to say.

Now, this is about last night. I can explain.

I mean... Oh, shut up. Don't even try it.

I can't believe you shot me.

It was the whole point, you know? What, you want me to fail a test?

Yeah.

Damn it.

There were two tests. One for them and one for you.

And you found the wrong one.

Data's here.

You know, there is one good thing about me shooting you.

It's probably the one honest moment we shared.

You would think that.

I'm not a real complicated guy. Somebody betrays me, I got no problem returning

the favor.

Oh, you're the spy here. How did I betray you?

I don't know.

What about the file?

Fake Kirby's death?

Kirby's death was Stark's idea, and the file is real.

The file's two years old.

I am solution beta.

I believed you.

I did. You know that whole line about us having some kind of bond?

I started thinking maybe it wasn't a load of crap.

Hmm.

Guess I was wrong.

Half of me wants to believe you're being honest.

The other half?

Believes a dead man will say just about anything.

Which half are you going to believe?

I

haven't

decided yet.

Better not build me for this.

Well, the Cerberus Corporation is gone.

Burned to the ground.

Well, we won't be held responsible for that, sir, will we, sir?

Oh, I doubt they'll bring us to court. I guess this whole mission was kind of a

wash. Not entirely.

In the few moments it had, our program managed to access Stark's hard drive and

send us encrypted files via their own Ethernet.

That is correct.

We're sifting through them right now.

Nice work, Ebert.

You wrote that, Ebert?

You didn't tell me that.

Apparently not.

Oh, did I hurt your feelings, Ebert?

Huh? So sue me.

Collateral damage for Ebert's ego.

Nobody at Doc might pay, Ebert.

Come on, Bobby.

$800 plate glass window.

Daddy's little... Pencil pusher.

E -bits.

You're dismissed as well, Darian. Yeah, well, Asher, there's just one more

thing. Why don't you give us a second here? E -bits.

Thank you.

All right, so this whole thing got started because Allie and Nora had my

personnel file, right?

Correct. Well, she could have only gotten that with a little help from the

inside. We got them all.

Well, I...

Don't like to think of myself as a mole.

Anonymous source would be more likely. Wait a minute, what are you talking

about? I gave them the file.

You what?

Well, even the best fishermen need bait.

Damned if they didn't reel you in with it.

So you wanted me in there. I needed a spy.

Why didn't you tell me?

Because those people would smell fake a mile off. You had to be convincing.

And you were.

Do you think I would really?

Leave seats for a Swiss account.

Just lying around.

I've been official.

Official?

I like the sound of that. I don't.

Welcome back.

Thoreau said that we are paid for our suspicions by finding what we suspected.

That's why paranoia can't prevent you.

Because no matter how much you think they're out to get you, you have no
