Delirium

Ólafur, Good afternoon. You may go in.

Uhm.. No.. I Uh... -Oh.

You're not Ólafur?

No, I'm not.

Oh, please wait a moment.

Can't I just go inside?

Let me see... Oh, yeah. It's Tuesday not Wednesday.

Oh, yeah. Ingi. -Exactly

Ten-thirty, right? -Yep.

Please go in, Egill is waiting for you.

Great, thanks.

Hello

Take a seat.

Yes, thanks.

Want some coffee?

Yes, please.

No milk!

Here you go. -Thank you.

So...

How's my niece?

She's good. She's actually home with Lilja right now.

Oh?

Yeah, looks like Lilja got some flu.

Well, don't hesitate to have Snædís call me if there's anything I can do.

Yes, absolutely.

I would like to give you....

My CV.

I just added a project I was working on, lately, and yeah.

Yeah, I think I would be a pretty good addition to the company.

Here's the thing.

You know why you're here, don't you?

You're here first and foremost here,

because Snædís, my niece.

She begged me to give you a chance.

When is your next court date?

Next week.

When was the last time you had a drink?

Not since the accident.

It's extremely difficult for people to change

and to be honest, I've never seen that happen.

Right.

I just know that I'm not going to be getting a lot of opportunities.

So, I can promise you that I'm not going to screw up.

Maybe...

Maybe.

You know the way out.

Yes.

Hey, hey.

Hey, how did it go?

Let's just talk about it when I get back home.

Was he that difficult?

Yeah.

He's just trying to size you up.

Yeah, I noticed.

Should I call him? -No, no need for that.

You sure? -Yeah.

One more thing. Our neighbours are complaining about some smell

that's coming into the hallway

and they think it's coming from our apartment.

Smell? You can't be serious.

Yeah okay, I'll go check it out.

You got the extra key?

Nope. Don't have it.

I'll be back in 15 minutes.

I'll see you then -Yeah, see you in a bit. Bye.

Hello?

Lilja is sleeping. -Sorry.

How is she feeling?

She's okay, I guess.

But she just fell asleep.

Does she still have a fever?

Should we take her to a doctor?

Nah we'll just wait and see how she is tomorrow. -Okay

But did you hear from the lawyer?

Sure. I'm just gonna talk to him more tomorrow. -Okay

But, I just made food. I'll wait for you.

Yes, coming in a bit.

I heard that uhh...

The Icelandic Krona is appreciating.

Which means we'll be getting less for our foreign currency.

Therefore we'll probably have to increase the rent.

I don't think anyone will pay that much, if we raise the price.

We gotta do something. Can't just sit around.

No I mean, you'll be starting a new job soon.

Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure.

He didn't even check out my CV.

No I mean, he already knows who you are.

Yeah but, he didn't do anything but scold me the whole time I was there.

Know what I mean?

Ok. I'll call him.

No please, don't.

I don't wanna be working for someone who wants nothing to do with me.

Okay, have you applied anywhere else?

Yeah sure.

Yes, really I have. -Really?

Yeah, just uhh... you know.

I just really don't wanna be meeting him and that hot secretary everyday.

You what I'm talking about.

Wait, wait.

Did you just say that hot secretary?

You heard me. -Okay, fine.

He has this chick in the reception that has no idea what she's doing.

It took her like 5 minutes to figure out what day of the week it was.

You can see why she was hired. It's obviously not because she's really good at her job.

Why do you say that?

You know exactly why.

He's obviously going through some

late-life crisis -I see

So you think he might be having an affair?

Yes.

No question about it.

Absolutely.

He's banging her for sure -Banging his daughter?

It's Embla, your cousin. -It's my cousin, Embla. Damnit.

She's been here many times.

Yeah, I remember her now.

You're such a tease.

So.

What's his name again?

The guy that's renting from us.

Something Reid, I think.

It's in the app. -Okay.

I'll be going then.

You know, he probably...

You know maybe he left the fridge open or something

and gone out for a trip or something. -Yeah.

I'll see you.

Thanks for the meal. -Bye.

Hey. Excuse me.

I'm renting out this apartment here.

Have you seen some old guy coming and going lately?

No, can't say I have.

Is that smell coming from your apartment?

Yeah, he probably forgot to take out the trash or something.

Mmm, I don't think it's that kind of smell.

It's more like...

Oh, nevermind.

Ah, damn it.

Ingimundur? -Yeah?

Did you know this Reid?

No, he just booked with us for a couple of weeks and afterwards we didn’t hear anything.

Who is us?

Yeah, me and my girlfriend. We're renting out the apartment.

What's her name?

Snædís Pétursdóttir.

Okay, but did you meet Reid to give him keys or anything?

No, but my girlfriend usually takes care of these regarding the rental.

Were there any complaints?

No, just got some calls complaining about the smell.

That's why I'm here today.

You know who called?

Who called? Nope.

I see, so Snædís took care of that too.

Okay, we'll be in touch with Snædís tomorrow.

But if you could refrain from going inside the apartment

while forensics is going through it. -Sure, no problem.

Sorry, one question.

Does forensics usually clean up... before they leave?

No. -Isn't the government or the police supposed to deal with these things?

No. That's not how these things work.

It's your apartment. The owner is responsible for private property.

So if I were you I would hire a cleaning company that specializes in these kinds of things.

Or you can just do it yourself.

Hey.

You're coming back so late?

Yes.

I found out what was causing that smell.

Yeah, and what was it?

He was just...

Rotting in our bathroom

What? -Yep.

Looks like he killed himself.

The smell was just...

It's almost like if it's stuck on me. I just gotta take a shower or something.

And what about our apartment?

We'll have new guests arriving in a few days.

Yeah, we'll just have to hire a cleaning company or something.

And how much do you think that will cost?

It didn't look good.

I fucking can't stand this, there's just always some bullshit like this going on.

Hey hey hey, it's gonna be alright.

Just come to bed and we can talk about it tomorrow.

Sure.

Okay...

I'll talk to you later.

Okay, thank you. Bye.

Good Morning. -Morning.

Shouldn't you be at work?

No, I just called and got the day off.

Were you talking to the cleaning companies? -Yeah.

And what did they say?

So this is always going to be expensive.

But they said they wanted to see it first before they give us a quote.

Okay, was there any offer you liked?

Yeah, there was one guy who was very...

Excited.

Excited?

But he can make it today, so.

Let's book him then, since he can make it today. -Sure.

Is Lilja awake? -Yes she's just in her room.

Okay, I'll go check on her.

Good morning, princess.

Oh, you're having a tea party?

How do you feel?

Can I have some?

Coffee?

You want coffee?

Yes, no problem.

It's about time you started drinking coffee.

Here you go. Cheers.

You like it?

Want more? -No...

I'll take your cup then.

Didn't think so.

Ingi, I'm gonna go and meet the guy who's going to clean up.

No, no. I'll do it. -Really?

Yeah, it's unnecessary for you to be dealing with that digusting mess. -Okay.

What disgusting mess?

Our guest is a slob.

Just like you.

(Van: "Arnórs cleaning service")

Hey. -Hey.

Arnór, right? -Yeah.

I'm Ingi.

What's up? -I'm good.

Yeah, here it is... -So how does it look?

Not particularly good. -Cool, let's check it out then.

Where is it at? Third or second floor? -Second.

How long has he been there?

I don't know. A couple of weeks?

I see.

This shouldn't be anything too difficult.

We'll fix it up real quick.

What about the rest of all this junk here?

Were you thinking about keeping any of it? Just in case.

If his family would want to keep any of it?

No, I don't think so, or you know I thought it's all just garbage.

I don't know, guess I'll take a look at it myself.

So, you want this cleaned up by today?

Yeah, it has to be finished today. -Okay.

But, what do you think that will cost?

Can go for 150,000 ISK or something like that. -Yeah, okay.

But what if you just take care of the bathroom, and I'll do the rest?

Yeah, we can do that.

How much would that cost?

Around 100,000 ISK, something like that.

Okay, can we agree on that, then? -Yeah, cool.

Great.

Oh right, would you prefer Lavender Spring or Lemon Fresh?

What?

Oh. You know... for the smell.

Does it matter?

No, not really.

I'll just go grab my stuff. -Okay.

Arnór, Arnór...

Arnór!

Yeah, what?

Hey, I'm going to the recycling center. -Oh, I see.

Ok, I'll have finished here and gone, by the time you get back.

Great, see you. -See ya.

No matter what I try, she dosn't allow me to des...

My name is Ethan Ried and this is my account.

I haven't slept for days.

I don't know for how long anymore.

I've been loosing more and more time.

I appear in places.

I...

I don't know how I got there or why I'm there.

I suspect it's the sleeping that's causing the time skips.

But it's just so hard to stay awake.

Daddy!

...dosn't matter to that thing.

Jesus, sorry sweetie. You just startled me, what is it?

Mommy said that you should come and watch TV with us.

I'll be there in a moment.

How did it go today?

Oh, just fine, or you know. We got it done.

The guy was pretty weird though. -Oh, yeah?

Yeah, but he gave me a discount.

Okay, so is the property good shape then?

At least cleaner than, before the...

Incident.

When do the new guests arrive? Tomorrow? -Yes, before noon.

Okay, I'll take care of them.

No, you've done so much, shouldn't I do it?

No problem, I like to stay busy. -Okay.

What? -It’s nothing.

Isn’t everything alright? -Yeah, sure.

So should we tell the new tenants what happened?

Yes, let's completely destroy our business. -Yes.

Yeah. Wanna do it? -Let's do it?

Smash it all to bits, let’s go for it. -Good idea.

A few days ago I took the box to an antiquities dealer.

He told me it looked like it was from the seventeenth century.

My son and his wife found the box in the attic when they were clearing it out.

It keeps following me.

Tormenting me.

It doesn't stop.

It can't be real.

It makes me see things.

It makes me do things.

Every time I have a skip in time my cassettes have been destroyed.

I will try to hide them, somewhere no one would look.

When did you wake up?

I couldn't sleep.

Isn’t everything okay?

Yeah, yeah. Just a bout of insomnia.

Okay, I’m taking Lilja. You can handle the guests, can’t you?

Sure.

♫ Arnórs cleaning service... Though the spot may be smelly and iffy, I'll be there in a jiffy. ♫

♫ Though the spot may be smelly and iffy, I'll be there in a jiffy. ♫

Arnórs cleaning service speaking.

This is Ingi, I was the one with that apartment…

That uhh...

Yes I remember that spot, isn’t everything alright?

Yeah, I just wanted to ask, while you were cleaning...

Did you find any tapes?

Tapes? You mean like VHS? -No, more like small audio tapes.

Oh, you mean like audio cassettes? -Yes, right. Audio cassettes.

No, can't say I did. -No? Okay.

Lavender Spring.

Yeah, hello?

Oh, yes.

You're downstairs?

Ok, yeah, I'll come right out.

Yep, bye-bye.

Alright, here we are.

Ok.

Welcome to your new home away from home.

Thank you, it looks really nice.

Uh, do you guys want a tour? Or are you good?

Uh no, we're fine.

Ok, uhm yes.

Here are your keys. -Thank you.

And uh, just remember to leave them on the table before you go.

And uh, yeah enjoy your stay in Iceland.

Ok, thank you. -Ok.

Bye-bye. -Bye-bye have a nice day.

Yeah, likewise.

You gotta be kidding me.

Yes? Hi, sorry, I forgot to check one thing.

If that's ok? -Yeah, of course, come in.

Thanks.

Hi, sorry. I just need to check the freezer.

Because sometimes you know.

Sometimes people forget to...

...empty it.

Yep, there we go.

You never know what people you don't know get up to.

Ok, bye-bye. -Bye-bye.

Hey, hey!

Hello?

Snædís?

I hear her say her last words.

Endlessly on repeat in my head.

I can't get it to stop.

I need it to stop.

I can't sleep anymore.

It keeps following me.

Tormenting me.

It dosn't st...

Daddy!

Hi, sweetie.

Should we go? How was your day?

We were studying math...

Anna poured milk over everything during lunch.

Hello? -Ingimundur, show up 7 AM sharp tomorrow morning.

So I got the job?

Hello?

Damn jerk.

What’s a jerk?

A dried piece of meat, sweetie.

Daddy, can you tell mommy that…

Snædís where is Lilja? -What.

Where is Lilja?

Isn't she just in her bed.

Lilja! -Ingi, isn’t everything alright?

Lilja! -Ingi.

Snædís, Snædís! She's not here.

She's right here.

Mommy. -It's okay sweetie, go back to sleep.

What in hell is going on? -I don’t know.

Sorry I just… -You just woke the child up in the middle of the night.

I know. I just thought that..

Thought what? -I don't know. It doesn’t matter.

No, for real. What’s going on? -Nothing's going on. I just thought that...

I just haven’t been sleeping.

Not sleeping well? -What do you mean?

You think this is all fine and good? -Darling, please

It's just stress.

Ingi.

Sorry. What are you doing?

Damn, you startled me.

Nothing, I was just...

When did you get up?

Huh? I don’t know.

Okay, I'll make some coffee.

And then there is this here.

So between twelve and one there's an hours lunch. Your shift ends at four.

Yeah, but wait. Wasn't I supposed to be at the office?

You stack the boxes.

Then you go to the conveyer belt.

Then you mop the floors. -I just thought that I...

You thought what?

Didn't you just tell me that you didn't have many opportunities

and you aren't going to screw up.

This is your opportunity.

You free to leave at anytime.

No, no.

Okay, then get to work.

How was your first day?

It was just fantastic.

I was in the factory stacking boxes.

Yeah. He makes everyone start there.

You'll be at the office before you know it.

Yeah. I kinda doubt that.

You called him right?

You called him and asked him to hire me.

Did you hear from your lawyer?

Yeah, he offered me to settle with the prosecutor.

And? -I said no there's not benefit doing that.

But we have a meeting on Friday to see how we are going to present it in court.

What are you doing?

You're not ready? -What? Why?

We have dinner at your parents house.

Did you forget? -Yeah, I forgot.

Can't we just bail on it. -No, hurry up.

Welcome!

Ohh, it's so good to see you. -Likewise.

You're so pale! You don't have a fever, do you?

Ah, no no. Just haven't been sleeping well.

Where's dad? -In his usual place.

Grandma, look at my new shoes! -Princess shoes!

You two are so beautiful like always.

Shall we go upstairs?

Ingi, can you help me slice for the gratin?

Sure.

Snædís told me you got a new job. -Yeah.

Stacking boxes.

Good thing I got a university degree for that.

I'm just glad you found something.

Call an ambulance!

Does it hurt?

Not so much.

Just got some good painkillers.

Gonna grab a glass of water.

Have you talked with Egill?

Yes.

What did you tell him?

Just about what happened and that I couldn't come to work tomorrow.

Okay.

Let's go to sleep.

You okay, dude?

I went into the attic to see if I could find some clues as to where the box came from.

Hidden among some boxes I found my great uncles war diary, Walter Reid.

Who had been with the US seventh army during world war two.

During the very last days of the war Walter and his men had been hunting down an SS colonel.

They had intercepted a message that the colonel was transporting something so dangerous,

the SS high command wanted the colonel to personally hide it from the allies.

The colonel had been able to bypass allied patrols and evade Walter for weeks.

Until Walter had gotten wind of that the colonel was getting closer to his final destination,

a villa close to some mountains somewhere in the south of Germany.

Under the villa was a labyrinth of bunkers dug into the mountain.

Once the colonel would reach the villa, it would be placed into a bunker.

Where the tunnels were to be destroyed.

So what they were trying to hide would be lost for forever.

But the colonel would never reach the villa.

Walter and his men reached the villa first.

Walter and his men opened the wooden crate

and inside he found the box.

He didn't understand why the SS

would go through all of that, to hide some old looking metal box.

He presumed it was bad information

and took the box for himself.

A few days later.

Walter was dead.

That's the thing, what all the owners had in common.

Is that they all died soon after opening the box.

Ohh, I'm so tired.

Sorry whoever you are listening to this.

It's hard to keep my thoughts straight.

Anna sent the box to me from Iceland the same day she died in a drunk driving accident.

I didn't open what she sent me until a few days ago.

At first, I didn't want to believe, but now

it's real.

Nothing but death and devastation surrounds that box.

I don't want to die.

Hi.

Hi. The girls that are renting out the apartment just called me.

Yes, and?

Someone told them what happened.

Can't believe this. Why would someone tell them that.

What should we do?

We just need to sell it or something.

I'm a bit busy now, can I talk to you later? -Sure.

But can you go to the store and buy groceries?

I'm a bit busy right now.

Ingi.

Yes...

What... What do we need?

Hey.

Hey.

Hey stop. I just need to talk to you.

Stop! Hey!

Get out of the car!

Hey!

Argh!

Ingi, where's the food?

Let's just order pizza.

What do you mean? Did something happen?

I met Grímur in the grocery store. -Grímur?

Yeah, he's the brother of...

Anna

I don't know how much more of this I can take.

What do you mean?

I started looking for some jobs abroad again.

Ingi.

Our life is here.

Can't we just discuss this another time?

I'll order the pizza.

I'm going out for a drive.

You're leaving?

Ingi?

Where have you been?

Can you leave me alone for a moment?

Where were you?

You know I can smell the alcohol off you.

It's because of the box -What?

It's because of the box.

What are you talking about?

It's cursed. -Cursed?

Are you for real? -Listen.

Ever since I got this box.

From the apartment.

I've been...

Seeing all kinds of things.

I've been hearing things.

And sometimes I completely lose track where I am.

Or I wake up somewhere and I don't know where I am or how I got there.

I have been warning you what would happen.

Listen to me. It's not like that.

Anna...

Anna, who died in the accident.

She owned this box.

You understand?

And I'm not going to end up like her.

Are you hearing yourself?

Yes I know how it sounds. -I can't deal with this now.

Snædís, listen. -No, I can't.

No please, Snædís listen to me. Snædís!

Don't! -Snædís.

Hey, hey.

Hi, it's mom. So sorry for calling you so late.

Did I wake you up? -No it's fine.

What do you want?

Uhm...

Could you do me a favor and drive me to the airport tomorrow?

Yeah, uhh can't dad drive you?

No, he's feeling a bit sick.

You know how the salted food affects him.

Yeah.

Yeah, sure. No problem, I'll drive you.

Should I call a taxi instead?

No it's fine, I'll go and pick you up.

Thank you my dear Ingi.

Yeah okay, see you tomorrow.

See you love. -Bye bye.

Poor Anna.

I'm not going to end up like one of them.

I'm not going to die.

I have to find Anna's notebook.

As she survived the longest.

I've been seeing these visions.

First like snapshots, but now I see the whole thing.

She created the box and unleashed it upon a small town.

After the town had been decimated.

People became suspicious.

It was only a matter of time, before witch hunters would come looking for her.

They finally found her and cornered her off in a vineyard.

She created the box to torment and torture any creature

that was unlucky enough to come in contact with it.

She was pure evil.

She hated everyone and everything.

After capturing her

she was beaten, tortured

and kept awake for days.

After confessing what she did she was brought to the gallows.

With her last breath she put a curse

that her spirit would torment humanity for all eternity.

They hanged her.

After she was dead, her body was burned

and her ashes encased and thrown into an unmarked grave.

I hear her say her last words endlessly on repeat in my head.

I need it to stop.

Ingi?

Ingi are you here? -Snædís?

Daddy! -Lilja!

Mommy, what is that?

Snædís!

Get out of there! Snædís!

Snædís! Snædís! -Daddy!

Snædís get out! Get out!

Have you not slept at all, my dear?

Let's just go.

Thank you for driving me.

No problem.

Snædís called me.

I see why you wanted me to drive you.

Don't be like that.

You know mom, I don't want to talk about it.

Why not?

You had been staying sober for so long. -You wouldn't understand.

Then help me understand.

I'm not out of control or anything, I just haven't been sleeping.

I was talking to my friend, Sunna.

She told me her husband... had also been dealing with insomnia.

Mom, I'm not in the mood right now.

There's something going on between you and Snædís. -Mom, stop it.

Don't you want to put the high beams on?

This isn't real.

Hello?

Where are you? -What?

You were supposed to meet me thirty minutes ago to discuss your case.

Yeah, of course. Sorry?

You know this is your future on the line. -Sure.

Uhh...

I don't have time for this right now. -What?

Wait!

Thank you for driving me, Ingi

I'm just about to board the plane.

Please give my regards to Snædís and Lilja.

Egill.

Oh, Ingimundur? Why are you here?

I just wanted to talk to you in private.

Alright.

Do you have any coffee?

No, the coffee machine is broken.

What do you want?

Yeah I just wanted to give you a token of my gratitude.

For... giving me the day off after my injury.

You don't have to give me anything.

So... after you took the day off, Snædís called me

and told me that you were determined to go to work despite your little injury.

Is that correct? -Uhh, yes?

Really? You know what? I really respect that type of work ethic.

A lot.

You know what? This company almost went bankrupt during the banking crisis.

There was a guy who worked here that...

Forget it.

Ever since then, I've been extremely careful who I let in...

But, if you can finish off this month at work.

Then I'll let you into the office.

Really? -Mhm.

Not sure what I can say.

Wait...

Is this some kind of a joke?

What?

Did you forget something?

Hey. My name is Ragnar, maybe you don’t remember me.

But, I'm Anna's former classmate.

From the university, I was thinking whether we could talk for a bit?

Yes, of course I remember you. Please come in. -Thanks.

Yes here it is, I haven’t changed a thing.

She was my youngest grandchild.

How was she, generally speaking, when she stayed here?

Ahh, she always seemed kind of distracted.

Her husband had died shortly after they got married.

She had difficulty sleeping.

His name was Reid, her husband?

Oh, yes, yes. He was American.

Did you get to know him?

No, no. I met his father.

It was horrible what happened.

Could I bother you for a glass of water? -Yes of course, certainly.

There you go. -Thanks.

Aren’t you hungry?

No. No thank you.

How did you know Anna again?

Excuse me, where's the bathroom?

It’s next to Anna’s bedroom.

So many guests today!

Ah, there you are. Grímur may I introduce you to...

What did you say your name was again?

It’s his fault that Anna is dead! -Stop it!

What?

Confess what you did!

Confess!

Hi, can you get out of the apartment.

There are guests arriving tomorrow.

You must find another place to stay.

Hi, hi. This is Snædís. I can't answer the phone right now.

But I’ll return your call as soon as I can.

Hi, hi.

I’m staying at a hotel.

I admit, I’m in a very bad state. I need help.

Can we talk?

So we can figure something out.

Call me.

Uhh...

I confess?

I confess everything.

The accident was my fault.

I’m in the hotel room.

This is not happening.

You are not here.

I’m never gonna win this case.

They know I crashed into her car. They can prove that I did it. I just...

They just can’t prove that I was drunk.

I could have saved her.

I watched the car burn.

Heard her screams.

I froze.

The car just appeared all of a sudden, wasn't supposed to be there.

I wasn't expecting anybody to be there.

It was just a few beers.

I was just scared.

I just drove off.

I’m sorry.

I could have saved her.

I’m sorry.

Snædís?

Daddy!

Hello sweetie.

How’s it going, lil bun. Where is Mommy?

She’s in the shower.

What happened to you?

Daddy just fell.

Wanna play with me?

Daddy’s tired.

But I wanna play.

Okay, what do you want to play?

Hide and seek. -Hide and seek.

Okay, let’s play hide and seek.

But can I start the count then?

Yes.

Can I? -Yes

Yes, are you ready?

And start... One, two...

Three, four, five, six, seven, eight..

Nine, ten.

Where could she be?

Are you maybe...

Here!

Lilja?

Where are you?

Lilja... Lilja!

Lilja, don’t, don’t.

You know you are not allowed into this room.

I’m so sorry.

I'm sorry. Everything is alright...

Everything is alright. I'm sorry.

We’ll just play hide and seek later. Okay?

Go back to your room, daddy has to work a bit. Okay?

Hi, my love.

I’ve found out that...

There is no other way to escape from this curse.

I thought that there was something that I could do.

But it seems there isn’t.

There is only one way to prevent this box from hurting you

or anyone else.

Don't try to find me.

I’m going somewhere no one can find me or this damn box.

I'm sorry.

You are the best thing that ever happened to me.

I love you.

I love you so much.
