We could've been great together.
[instrumental music]
[Sandra] It wasn't easy when Sophie was little.
You know, I was a single mom on a low income...
[Sophie] And baking was a fun,
cheap activity to do together at home.
[Sandra] And then we just got totally addicted,
we kept trying to top our last recipe.
Pretty soon our whole neighborhood was coming to us
for pies and birthday cakes.
From hobby bakers to mother-daughter entrepreneurs,
I love it. So..
How did you transition this
into a full-time business?
Well, we started doing weekend farmers' markets
when Sophie was still in high school.
Which meant we were working seven days a week.
But it was amazing, and it grew a bigger following...
And here we are, living our dream, owning our own cafe.
And why Sweet Surrender?
[Sandra] Well, we're both totally obsessed
with old movies, and it's the title of a musical
from the '30s.
Plus, when you eat our baking,
it's a sweet, sweet surrender.

to bring in more foot traffic.
So, actually, I've been brainstorming all morning.

And then I'll put those up.

Yeah, she's in the back.
And I'm warning you, she's mad.
-Hi. Yeah. -Okay.

You were supposed to be in early to make these.
-Where were you? -I had an appointment.
You didn't come home again last night. Where were you?
It's none of your business.
It is my business when it affects our business.
I made a mistake, all right? But I need a life too. I'm an adult.
Well, then act like one, we worked really hard
for this place. You wanna just throw it all away?
I'm not throwing it all away. I was just late.
-Well, you've been late a lot. -Yeah, so have you.
Finish this, will you?
[dramatic music]
[camera clicks]
[Sophie sighs]
Oh! Blaine, hi. What are you doing?
-I didn't even see you come in. -[sighs]
[chuckles] You caught me.
I wanted to surprise you with one of your favorites.
-Trying to out-bake a baker? -I was going to try.
[chuckles] That's sweet, but you don't have to.
-You okay? -[sighs] Yeah.
It's just my mom and I were in this stupid fight.
-[Sandra] Sophie! -I gotta go, it's busy.
-Uh, maybe we can chat later? -Sure.
Okay.
Of course.
I'm sorry. It was my shift. I should've been here.
I don't know what's going on with you lately.
-Are you not happy here? -No.
Mom. God, no, I...
I've, um, just been seeing...
No, never-never mind.
That's pretty. Where'd you get it?
Oh. Uh, it's old. I just never wear it.
I feel like you're hiding things from me.
And you never used to do that.
Mom, I know you don't wanna believe this,
but I'm an adult now, which means
I need some privacy, too.
You're right. I know. You're right.
And you know what?
I think you need to start treating me like a partner
in this business.
You want me to take on all this responsibility,
but then you continue to boss me around like I'm your employee.
[sighs]
Well, I guess I'm just used to being the mom
and the boss.
And I'm used to following.
I just think maybe it's time for things to change.
Well, Sweet Surrender is ours,
so going forward,
we should be on the same page. Equal everything.
I'd like that.
But remember, I'm still your mother.
[chuckles] I know.
And I would do anything for you.
"I would dance with you until the cows come home."
"But I would rather dance with the cows till you come home."
[both] Duck Soup.
I love you.
I love you, too.
[leaves rustling]
Who's there?
-Stand down. It's just me. -Oh, my God.
You are always doing that.
What are you, some type of ninja or something?
Whatever you want me to be.
-Hey, can we talk? -That doesn't sound good.
No. It's not what you think.
Okay.
So I know I said it was okay to keep this from my mom,
but I think we have to tell her.
-Don't you love me? -What? Of-of course I do.
I just... My mom's the only family I have.
And she sacrificed everything for me
and we've never kept anything from each other until now.
Sophie, I can't lose you.
What? You won't. My mom loves you.
And age doesn't matter when it comes to love.
Believe me, if we tell your mom, it'll be the end of us.
Hey, she can't stop us from seeing each other.

I wanted to win her over for your sake,

and she started coming on to me.

that she was just being overly friendly.

I tried letting her down easy,

No. I just, I don't want anyone to get hurt.

No. Wait.

to play at the music night that I host,
and when I saw that live-stream you made,
I couldn't believe it. It was like seeing a ghost.
So he dated you and your sister at the same time.
He charmed his way into our lives,

that we were the only family that he ever had.
So what's the deal with his family then? Are they even dead?

My love, love, love, I was with you the whole night. Okay?
Sandra, come here. Okay?
She's trying to get between us.
This is a stunt. She's making things up.
Look, mom, he's tricking you just like
he tricked me and all of those other women.
-Sandra, come here. -What other women?
She's obviously lying!
Listen, I met one of his exes.
He got between her and her sister
and made them both fall in love with him.
-What is she talking about? -I don't have a clue.
You're unbelievable! We dated for months!
W...
The two of you?
Look, I didn't wanna keep it a secret,
but I didn't think you'd approve.
And then I saw how happy you were with Blaine
and I didn't wanna ruin that happiness, but, mom...
-You don't know how bad he is. -Enough.
I'm so sorry I didn't say anything.
Sandra,
we are getting married today.
You, you said you would never break your promise.
I don't think so.
You're choosing her over me?
You said you loved me.
Yeah, well, you said you loved me, too.
I guess we all say things we don't mean.
You, you-you had to wreck our happiness?
You're just like my wretched sisters--
Oh, what, you're gonna kill me, just like you killed them?
-[grunts] -Mom, no! Mom!
[grunts] She is mine! And I am all she'll ever need.
-No! -[groans]
-Sophie is all I'll ever need. -I'm okay. I'm okay.
-[indistinct chatter] -I'm okay. I'm okay.
Oh, gosh, look at you.
Thank you for saving me.
-I said I'd never leave you. -Oh. And you never will.
-Casablanca. -Casablanca.
I'm so sorry.
[indistinct chatter]
Everything is as it should be.
-Enjoy, Kate. -Thank you.
[Penny] Hello, Sweet Surrender.
I am Penny Jackson, and I just wanna give a shout out
to the amazing owners Sandra and Sophie.
I would not be on this stage without them.
So thank you from the bottom of my heart.
