Everyone in the family
was texting Julie, calling

Julie, hoping that she
would answer the phone.

I knew instantly something was wrong.

We were scared.

The number one emotion that we felt was
fear.

There were texts coming through from her
phone, but the text did not sound like her.

The responses that I
was getting back were

really cold, and she's
just not a cold person.

The puzzle in this case was, what could
have happened to Julianne Gonzalez?

I started to suspect the digital evidence
was hiding the actual truth.

That's right.

The doctor said to nine one one...
Do you need police fire or EMS?

Um police?

This is the police.

The person fe UFOs.

I leanly person, your phone.

Say, what's her name?

Missing persons unit investigated over a
thousand cases a year.

Most of the time, these people were found
ashore.

They were found a short time later or
found to be voluntarily missing.

It is rare for a missing persons case to
turn into anything serious.

But nonetheless, we investigate each case.

In this instance, an officer
was sent out to speak to

Julianne Gonzalez's aunt,
who reported her missing.

A police officer came out to my home.

I stated to them that she had not been
heard from since Friday morning.

We had plans to meet up for lunch that
day.

And that didn't occur.

If Julie made plans with you, she would
show up.

She wasn't a flake.

I drove to Dora's house to meet with the
police.

The patrol officer told us that
there was another household

nearby that had made a report
as Julie abandoning her child.

We, as a family, knew that something was
very wrong.

Because Julie would not leave Layla
behind.

Say good night, camera.

Good night, camera.

And I asked him, who was the person who
made that report?

And he said it was George de la Cruz.

Julie and George met at Crockett High
School.

They got married really young,
right out of high school.

A few years later, they had a daughter.

They had Layla.

Julie tried her best to make things work
for the sake of Layla.

But in late of 2009,
Julie had finally decided

that their relationship
wasn't going to work.

So she left George.

Julie was at a grocery store one night and
she ran into Aaron.

My parents used to own a convenience store
in Taqueria.

And Aaron was working in the store
section.

Julie and Aaron bumped into each other a
few years later.

Julie and Aaron began dating.

They were seeing each other a lot.

They were having a great relationship.

So she started engaging more and more in
social media.

Julie would post her mood for what she was
doing at the time.

Julie was always an optimistic person.

Always looking for the good in every
situation.

She was posting that she was happy.

She posted on Facebook that she couldn't
wait to get Layla back.

Because she missed her so much.

And this was dated March 24th of 2010.

Two days before she went missing.

She was a very scheduled person.

She was supposed to pick up her daughter
that day from George's home.

I guess it's a mother's instinct.

It's a mother's intuition.

And my gut feeling was very strong and I
knew something was wrong.

Investigators called Julie's friends and
family and learned that she had sent text

messages in the afternoon of Friday,
March 26th, after she was last seen.

The text messages sent
by Julie indicated that

she had voluntarily left
with a man named James.

The digital evidence indicated that this
was just a typical missing persons

investigation and that Julie had
voluntarily left.

But Julie's family didn't believe that she
would have left her daughter Layla,

much less her new boyfriend, Aaron.

Because the text messages
made no sense to Julie's

family, they asked Aaron
to contact investigators.

You know, I was so
confused because I, everything

was fine when I left to
go to work Friday morning.

And then about 2.30 I got a text saying,
Aaron, I can't do this anymore.

And then I immediately tried calling her
again and again.

And no answer still.

And then Saturday
morning, she sent me a text

and said, Aaron, I
didn't mean to hurt you.

I haven't been truthful.

I haven't been truthful with you.

You're a good guy, just not for me.

Yeah.

Investigators involved,
obviously, relying

on text messages
received by Julie's friends.

The text messages that were sent to Aaron,
corroborated each other.

They were coming from Julie's cell phone.

They obviously had no reason to believe
that there was anything wrong,

that she was in no danger.

Morning after I reported Julie missing,
I was supposed to be at work at 4 a.m.

and I did not go in.

Instead, I took a drive
and I went the route that she

would go to and from my home
to her job on Riverside Drive.

And on the way back, I
got to the Walgreens by

my home and I looked
over into the parking lot.

Her car was parked there.

It was just sitting there.

So I walked into Walgreens.

And I'm running up and down the aisles.

Hoping to catch her.

And there was nothing.

And I asked the clerk, have you seen this
girl?

This is her picture.

He said, someone came in earlier and said
that they were having car trouble.

And they were going to
be leaving their vehicle

there and they would
come back for it later.

And I said, was it this girl in the
picture?

Was it Julie?

For Julie to break down so close to home
and not call me or call anyone else,

it was very odd.

I was very, very worried.

I was dispatched to a
911 call at the Walgreens

at South First Street
and Stastny Lane.

When I arrived at the parking lot,
I found Dora.

She was standing next to a tan Chevy
Impala that she said belonged to Julianne.

I could see clearly through the windows
and that there was nothing of note.

I became aware of some social media posts,
MySpace posts, that Julianne had made that

said she was going away and wanted to be
left alone.

Julie's family said that George,
Julianne's estranged husband, told them

that she asked George to keep Layla for
the weekend.

Julie would not leave Layla behind with
George, Layla's father.

She would never have done that.

Never.

Layla was her number one.

Layla was everything to Julie.

Every major decision in her life was based
on the future that she wanted for Layla.

Julie was a very responsible person and
George was not.

He was still living at his mother's.

He didn't have a full-time job.

He was at home playing video games all the
time.

I went to George's house after speaking
with the family because they said he was

the last one who had heard anything from
Julie.

He told me that he last saw her Friday,
two days ago, and that she told him that

she wanted him to keep Layla, their
daughter, because she had some things to do.

She just wanted to be left alone and
didn't go into detail.

His mom was there.

Layla was there.

Then he let me search the house.

I was looking for
anything that would give me

any kind of indication
about where Julie-Ann was.

There was no sign of her.

There was no sign of a disturbance.

No blood.

Nothing, nothing that raised any red flags
inside.

It's highly unusual that
a report of a missing

person actually results
in a true missing person.

What I'm thinking is that maybe,
maybe Julian just doesn't want to be found.

Julie's car being found at Walgreens was
important.

The next priority was to
determine if a woman mentioned

by the clerk there at the
Walgreens was in fact Julie.

Investigators discovered there were no
exterior cameras at the Walgreens,

but they did find there were interior
cameras.

I queued up the video footage of the
Walgreens to the late hours of Friday,

March of 26th at
the time that the clerk

reported seeing a woman
who may have been Julie.

I was hopeful that I would see her on
there and we would know that she was fine.

There were several women that came into
the store during that time.

There was no one in
the video that I identified

as being Julie that
was very disappointing.

At the time that Julie Ann Gonzalez was
reported missing.

There was numerous text messages and at
that time MySpace postings.

But two days after Julie's disappearance,
the text messages and social media

postings stopped and her digital trail
went cold.

And after that, there was no communication,
no activity from Julie whatsoever.

Julie had completely gone off the grid.

I think when you're looking at a case like
this, it's extremely important to get a

full and clear picture of your victim in
the case.

Julie, she was very ambitious.

Anything that she'd put her mind to,
she would complete.

She finished high school
year early and then she wanted

to be a pharmacy technician
at Walgreens and she did it.

She wanted to rise in the ranks in her
workplace in order to provide a better

life, not just for herself, but especially
for her daughter.

People started saying that she abandoned
her child.

No way.

There's no way.

That's not her.

That wasn't how she was raising her
daughter.

And she would not just disappear on her.

When you get all of that information,
understand her relationships with her

family and friends, there can be no doubt
in your mind that she is not the kind of

person who would ever just up and leave
all of that behind.

The police department
wanted my opinion on

how they should perhaps
proceed with the case.

The most concerning thing was her car being
abandoned and her daughter being abandoned.

Everyone who came in contact with her only
spoke highly of her.

Talked about how devoted, absolutely
devoted she was to the most important

person in her life, her daughter,
Layla.

As more time went by after the initial
report of her being missing, everyone

became more and more concerned that it might
be a case where foul play was involved.

Julianne's case officially became homicide
investigation in May of 2010.

As investigators, we
immediately started looking

at the people who
were closest to Julianne.

Police knew that Aaron Burrow had a
relationship with Julianne, had been with

Julianne the night before she turned up
missing.

Because of that, he was a person of
interest.

We decided to bring Julie's boyfriend,
Aaron, back in for questioning.

How you doing?

I just want you to be
aware that any time

you're free to go, you
hear your own free will.

Essentially, what I want to
go over and get documented

and what I'm going to
want you to put on here.

The text messages and stuff you received
from Julie.

Mm-hmm.

Did it kind of blindside you?

Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah, absolutely a blindside of me.

Uh, you know, we didn't have any problems
at all.

There were just certain things in the,
in the text messages.

She just, the responses that I were
getting back were really cold.

And she's just not a cold person.

Aaron provided a series of
letters written by Julie to him,

one in particular written that
morning when she disappeared.

This one was from January.

Uh, this was Valentine's Day.

This was March 11th.

And this was the last one of the 26th.

This is the one she left on the 26th.

Mm-hmm.

Julie was telling him how much she was in
love with him.

How she looked forward to being together
with him.

Eventually getting married.

Having children.

That was a big red flag to investigators.

There was something wrong.

Because there was obviously
no reason for Julie to

have left the way that the
text messages had mentioned.

Aaron Brode agreed to take a polygraph
exam.

He passed the polygraph exam with flying
colors.

We knew that he wasn't involved in her
disappearance.

Julie's case was unique
because it wasn't your typical

homicide investigation where
there's a scene of violence.

There was obvious absence of physical
evidence.

What we did have was digital forensic
evidence.

I got to a point where I started to
suspect that the digital evidence was

hiding the actual truth pertaining to
Julie's disappearance.

It was decided that a forensic digital
expert would be crucial.

The Austin Police Department
brought me into focus on

the call detail records and
mapping of cellular activity.

We all carry around cell phones today and
other tracking devices.

Which basically create a digital footprint
of our activity on a daily basis.

Digital evidence
oftentimes speaks louder than

words or those who
cannot speak for themselves.

Because it tells us as analysts what
potentially happened.

The thought of her not coming back wasn't
an option.

It was a nightmare that we just wanted to
wake up from.

Our lives basically stopped that day,
March 26, 2010.

You have one task,
one goal, one thing you

want to do, and that
is find Julian Gonzalez.

My sister got a billboard donated.

We wanted her face out in public,
hoping somebody could say, hey, I saw her.

Please, please, I'm begging you,
we are begging you.

Please just let us know.

Our main objective was let's get her face
out, let's get her story out.

Where could she be?

Where is she at?

Is she buried?

Is she alive?

My initial focus was
to analyze the digital

data that was provided
to me by law enforcement.

The Austin Police Department shared with
me the information on MySpace.

And the text messages that family members
received related to Julie's device.

One of the things we wanted to do is
analyze the language pattern and grammar

to compare the activity before and after
her disappearance.

She was very articulate.

She would spell words properly.

She had upper and lower case letters,
proper punctuation.

And then after Julie goes missing,
activity goes to misspelled words.

No punctuation, some punctuation.

And it was not the language pattern that
was displayed prior to her disappearance.

I came to the conclusion,
based upon Julie's postings,

that somebody else was
actually using Julie's device.

I believe that the killer was actually using
the digital data to cover their tracks.

I knew that we needed more digital
evidence to help crack the case.

While Jim was looking into new digital
evidence that he could obtain,

I was looking into Julie's bank
transactions.

We discovered on the day that Julie
disappeared, Friday, March 26th,

that there were several
bank transactions at a

Walmart, but there was
no video footage available.

What they did discover was, inside the
Walmart, there was an additional business,

a Wood Forest Bank.

We obtained video footage from the Wood
Forest Bank inside the Walmart.

We were hoping that the video was that
crucial piece of evidence we were waiting for.

If it turned out that Julie Ann was using
her credit card, that would suggest that

she intended to be missing and she was
still alive and okay.

Then the police can end their
investigation, no crime committed.

What if it turned out that someone else
was using her credit card?

That changes everything.

We were hoping to see Julie on camera,
alive and well.

We queued the video footage to the time of
the purchase.

Where we were reviewing
the video footage, minute

after minute, there was
still no signs of Julie.

And then we noticed a man pushing a child
in a shopping cart.

We had to stop the video, pause it,
to determine who it was.

We eventually realized it was George.

And Layla.

Why would he have not told anyone that he
was there at the Walmart using her card?

Assuming there was some innocent reason.

It's going to take a lot to get to the
bottom of all of that.

After we realized that George had used
Julie's debit card, we had to get a better

understanding of Julie's relationship with
George.

I told the police that the whole time
their relationship wasn't stable.

They were married for only a few months,
and George couldn't handle the separation.

According to her Facebook
pages, you got a sense

that something wasn't right
between her and George.

What I would share with the police about
Julie's Facebook posts would be the

messages that she would post saying
something like, my ex is acting strange,

something's wrong with him, he's up to
something.

I believe that George was involved with
Julie's disappearance at that time,

but we needed more evidence.

So we reverted back to Jim in
analyzing the digital evidence,

hoping that he could provide
that next lead we needed.

Everybody in today's environment leaves a
digital trail.

I decided to focus on George's digital
footprint.

The investigators actually
wrote a search warrant

to Microsoft to get
George's Xbox records.

One of the things I noticed that George
was an excessive gamer.

Up until the day that
Julie goes missing, George

oftentimes would gain
up to 18 hours a day.

I noticed there was
one day where George

had an absence of
gaming for up to 20 hours.

That one day just so happened to be March
26th, the day that Julie went missing.

Julianne's family was
doing everything they

could to keep Julianne's
case in the spotlight.

One of the places that they were invited
to speak on was the Dr. Phil show.

I asked him, can you give George a lie
detector test?

I wanted to know if he did something to
Julie.

Is my daughter still alive?

George agreed to take a polygraph on the
show.

When you responded to
the operative questions,

that it showed that you
were not telling the truth.

What do you know about this that you
haven't told us?

What I know is that I should have done a
little bit... something more.

What, to me, was most interesting about
the revelation that George had failed the

polygraph, was George's mother's reaction
to that.

I thought, we're gonna get an answer.

Finally, we're gonna get an answer.

Tell me that too, George.

I don't know, mommy.

I don't know.

I wish I knew.

I really wish.

That I was wrong.

I think it says a great deal when a mother
believes, on national TV and is ready to

express it, that her son may have been
involved in the murder of not just

someone, but a murder of the mother of his
child.

Is this Detective Scott?

Sir, I'm sorry to bother you, please,
but could you please listen to me?

Yes, ma'am.

There was a call to the police department
from Victoria de la Cruz, which is

George's mother, and she was very
distraught.

Can you tell me what it is that you need
to show me?

In the back of my yard, a very,
very big hole.

Okay?

Uh-huh.

Has it ever been there before?

It's never been there.

Okay.

Is there anything in the hole?

I was trying to dig in it, but I'm still.

Why don't you want to continue?

Because I'm just scared.

Okay.

We're gonna have somebody right out there,
okay?

Please.

When police arrived at her home, she
took them out through the back of the shed.

Officers observed that the plywood
flooring had been cut up.

Underneath it exposed what was described
at the time as a trench.

The measurements were
consistent with Julie's

height, which was
approximately five foot tall.

My first impression of it was that it was
a grave.

We sifted through the dirt of the hole in
the shed.

We didn't find any trace
evidence that we could have

used to determine whether a
body had been placed there.

Investigators canvassed George's
neighborhood and spoke to residents.

The morning of Julie's disappearance,
residents there in that, in George's

neighborhood reported interference in the
phone lines.

There was a crew that
was sent out there to

dig it up and find out
what the problem was.

AT &T technician had
actually come out to George

de la Cruz's home,
going into the backyard.

The police determined, in talking to this
technician, that someone had dug deeply

into the ground, deeply enough to sever a
cable.

On the morning that Julianna disappeared.

And knocked out internet service briefly
in that neighborhood.

George became very uncooperative in
assisting law enforcement.

Detectives and myself decided to push
forward with obtaining more digital evidence.

Detectives went back and reviewed George's
Xbox records, and they took the IP address

that was reflected on George's Xbox
records.

And then they processed it to determine
who that IP address actually went to.

What they had determined was that George
was actually hacking into his mom's

neighbor's Wi-Fi connection in order to
play his games.

Investigators then refocused their
attention back to Julie's MySpace records

to observe the IP address associated with
those records and those postings.

The IP address associated
with those postings was

that of the neighbor's
Wi-Fi connection as well.

It went to show that
George was the person who

posted the MySpace postings
after Julie disappeared.

The neighbor had no clue that George was
using her Wi-Fi connection.

The digital evidence is speaking for
George, even though George is not speaking.

Investigators and I decided to get
George's call detail records as well,

in the hope that we would be
able to see George's location

during the time leading up to
and after Julie's disappearance.

After receiving the records back from the
provider, we had unfortunately learned

that George's device
was actually disconnected

and therefore there
was no location data.

But the Austin police
department provided me with

the call detail records
associated with Julie.

We looked at, did her device ever go to
Colorado?

I believe Julie's call records would prove
that George was Julie's killer.

We took Julie's historical call and detail
records, and we mapped out that activity

in the antennas and cell sites that she
actually connected to.

Julie arrived at approximately 11.32 at
George's mother's residence.

Her device appears to be there for an
excess of three to four hours.

The two days thereafter,
they connected to the cell

site and sector that cover
George's mother's house.

Her device never left Austin.

There was no activity even close to
Colorado.

George had possession of Julie's device.

George was pretending to be Julie in that
text activity.

George went through great lengths to
manipulate the digital data.

But Julie was speaking to us when she
could not speak.

We executed a search warrant at George,
the Cruz's residence.

We found a photograph
of Julie that apparently

had been torn, but
then taped back together.

What we didn't find, however, was blood,
hair, murder weapons.

We knew George was our suspect,
that he was responsible for Julie's murder.

But it was going to be
very difficult to move

forward with an arrest
without finding Julie's body.

There were searches conducted desperately
trying to locate Julie's body.

By 2013, Julie had been missing for three
years.

It was unlikely that we were going to be
able to locate where her body was.

And it was time to move forward with the
case.

We were able to obtain an indictment for
George for the murder of Julian Gonzalez.

And he eventually was arrested.

You remember me?

You know who I am, right?

Yes, sir.

I just wanted to give him an opportunity
to tell the truth about what happened.

There's one person right now
in your life who's probably

more important to you than
anything else in this world.

Can you think of who that is?

Who is that?

My daughter.

Sorry?

My daughter.

Your daughter?

Yes.

And then she's going to look to you and
she's going to say, where is Mom?

No.

At that moment, he started tearing up.

I thought he was going to tell me the
truth, tell me what happened.

It makes sense what you're kind of trying
to say.

Like I said, I don't know.

What I'm kind of trying to say?

Yeah.

You're trying to make me feel bad.

Something that I didn't do.

But then he recomposed and invoked his
right to remain silent.

And that was the end of our interrogation.

George's mother was a cooperative with
police.

We were able to determine that Victoria
had nothing to do with Julie's murder.

It was 2015, five years after Julie had
disappeared, before the trial was held.

I felt that the digital evidence told an
extremely powerful story about what had

happened with Julie Ann Gonzalez and who
had caused her death in this case.

I think that when she showed up,
she probably asked him again, Why haven't

you signed a waiver on the divorce
petition so I can get you out of my life?

He got upset.

Did something to cause her death in the
house that morning.

He attempted to dig a
grave in his own backyard

where he would always
know where she was.

I think eventually he buried her body
somewhere, probably out in the country.

He wanted this story to be that she had
run away.

The digital evidence
showed that he was sending

out messages using her
phone to mislead people.

He used her credit card to purchase items
at Walmart.

Data doesn't lie.

The digital evidence built a strong case
around George de la Cruz.

And it's something that he couldn't escape
from and the jurors couldn't ignore.

The verdict that the jury returned was
guilty to the charge of murder.

The jurors sentenced him to a term of life
in prison.

It was quite a relief when George was
found guilty.

I expected a conviction.

What surprised me was the fact that he got
a life sentence.

I didn't expect that at all.

It was a difficult case, and specifically
because it was a bodiless case.

But after the digital forensic evidence
was presented to them, there was no doubt

in their mind that George was guilty of
Julie's murder.

The family was satisfied with George's
conviction.

But despite the conviction, they still
want to know where Julie is.

They want to know where her body is.

There's hope that someday, and my hope
also as well, that George will tell us

where she is so that she
can be recovered and taken to

a rightful resting place
where her family can see her.

It's very difficult for us, our family.

We don't have closure.

We don't have a body.

We don't have a memorial.

All I want is answers.

Because to this day, I'm still as confused
and lost as day one.

To me, Julie, what she means to me,
I love her to death.

She's my blood.

She's my family.

George deprived his daughter of a normal
life, of a relationship with her mother,

being raised by a beautiful soul.

My hope for Layla is that
she never forgets where

she came from and the
person that gave birth to her.

She meant the world to her.

She was her mother's world.

She is an eldest son.

I didn't have a message.

I love her.

She's a mother of a juste teacher.
