I just woke up from a 3-year-old
something.

Yeah, it's Brendan.

I don't know if he wandered out or what
happened.

Even to this day, I still have PTSD when I
hear police sirens.

We knew immediately there was foul play
involved.

Brendan didn't walk down to Cooper River.

We needed to get this person off the
streets.

Any person can sit across
from you and tell you a story,

but the phone and the
digital footprint can't lie.

I've pointed out several inconsistencies
in your story.

We're here to find out the truth.

I got a call from DJ
around 6am, and he told

me that he could not
find our son, Brendan.

Are you all done?

All done!

Brendan has never wandered off.

When I got the phone call, I ran out of
the house.

I didn't even put shoes on.

I was still in my pajamas.

And I drove over to DJ's apartment.

My mind was racing.

I couldn't really compile a conclusion.

I didn't realize what time it was.

I was still sleeping.

When I did look at my phone, I had 13
missed calls.

I called Samantha, of course.

I'm like, what are you talking about?

It's like, what do you mean he's missing?

He's three years old.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Uh, house?

House who?

I'm asking him to help.

Haha!

Brendan's personality was just so
genuinely happy.

Come on!

He really loved everyone around him.

He had the cutest little smile.

He was the ultimate perfect child.

When I met DJ, I was about 13 years old.

When I found out I was pregnant, it was
a few months after graduating high school.

DJ was pretty excited.

We actually told his parents first.

In 2014, I had found out that DJ had,
um, cheated.

That's something that I didn't approve of,
so I ended our relationship.

DJ and I got along pretty well.

He had Brendan every other weekend.

And he was really a great, gentle dad.

At 6.07 AM, I was dispatched to a call of
a report of a child that was missing.

As a father myself, I would know where my
children are all the time.

You get more and more concerned after
every minute that the child's missing.

When arriving on scene, I was met with DJ
Criado.

DJ seemed very upset.

DJ informed me that he last saw his son
when he put him to bed the night before.

He wakes up early, does not find Brendan
in the house.

I did not see any signs of forced entry at
DJ's door.

Once I got into the apartment,
I started searching.

It's a small apartment.

Didn't take too long to determine that
Brendan was not there.

Looking for a lost child, time is of the
essence.

You want to resolve this as soon as
possible.

Notifications were made to the CART team.

The Child Abduction Response Team.

A unit that will respond with all their
expertise to find a missing child.

Also a field communication unit.

Inside the unit, there are mapping
computers to help with search drids.

It was very relieving
to have a lot of help

come out in the effort
of searching for Brendan.

My partner, K-9 Cowan, and I patrol from
Lindenwald, New Jersey to Philadelphia.

My partner is trained for patrol and
scent.

I was given a velvet red Mickey Mouse
slipper with Brendan's scent on it.

When I started, my partner took off down
Cooper.

Once we got to the end of Cooper,
he pulled across Park Drive.

I guess it was another block or so where
the road curves to the right at Saginaw.

At that point, I knew he was on scent.

And he pulled me into the wooded area.

When the canines are on scent,
they're very focused.

Their breathing pattern changes.

Sometimes they will even open their mouths
just to take in more scents.

He was pulling harder and harder.

He brought us to a small, narrow footpath.

We got to the bottom of the hill.

Directly in front of us was a creek.

Once we got to the creek, my partner
turned slightly to the right, lifted his

head, turned and looked back at me as
though he had lost his scent.

And a few seconds later, I don't recall
how, but he got my attention.

And I looked down and
Brendan was lying on the side

of the creek with his
head turned to the right.

Yeah, he was deceased.

Say happy.

You say happy birthday.

It made me go home and hug my son pretty
tightly.

Homicide personnel were notified of a
potential drowning of a three-year-old child.

It's a call that no detective wants to
get.

You have to really regain your focus and
really work on the task at hand.

And that's figuring out what happened to
this young child.

I had a bad feeling that this was no
drowning.

I had been in the homicide unit for
approximately two years at this point.

This is my first child death.

Nothing compares to this.

There was helicopters in the air.

A lot of emotion here today.

There was media converging on our
location.

A crime scene had already been
established.

It was a somber scene.

Brennan's body was located in the water on
his stomach.

Still brings back emotions.

Five years later.

Yeah, it was very upsetting.

Everybody knew that this was a case that
we needed to solve.

And we needed to get this person off the
streets.

And that was our goal.

I took notice of the fact that he was
wearing pajamas.

And the other thing that stood out to me
were his socks.

His socks were clean.

And we knew right then
and there that Brennan didn't

walk down to this Edison
Woods section of Cooper River.

We knew immediately there was foul play
involved.

What made our crime scene detectives job
even more difficult was the lack of any

physical evidence that they
could retrieve and process

based on just the circumstances
where Brennan was located.

Brennan's been in the water for an
extended period of time.

We don't know exactly how long.

So any evidence or DNA could potentially
be gone from his body.

As the lead homicide
detective, it's my responsibility

to notify the next of kin
that we had located Brennan.

And to just notify the family that
Brennan's not coming home.

When I arrived at the police station,
they took me inside.

They told me that my son, Brennan,
had been found deceased.

That was, like, the hardest sentence to
hear.

It, like, made me completely numb.

As far as, uh, me supporting Samantha,
it was very hard.

I probably wasn't too much support at all
for her.

Because you're just trying to hold
everything together.

You know?

Can I get you a drink of water?

Yeah.

Why don't you take a deep breath?

I know you can do this.

Having to do a next-to-kin
notification is probably one

of the hardest things to
do as a homicide detective.

Everyone deals with grief
differently, so you don't know

what kind of reaction, how
emotional they're gonna be.

You found your son.

He's deceased.

Oh, God, no!

No, no, no, no, no!

No!

He was found.

No!

I'm sorry, sir.

I love him so much.

He is a grieving father, and I have to
break this news to him and ascertain as

much information as I can about what
happened to Brendan.

What happened?

What happened?

Well, we're trying to find out right now,
okay?

DJ was able to compose
himself after a couple minutes, and

he provided us a rundown of
the last 24 hours with his son.

I read him his bedtime stories.

I always read him three books before I let
him go down to bed.

But you must probably get laid him down.

I heard him babbling in the other room
like he normally does.

I go to my room and I'm trying to talk to
my girlfriend.

She goes to bed.

I'm still trying to communicate with
her and try to call her and all this, and.

..

I didn't get a hold of her anymore.

She went to bed.

She lives in New York.

She goes to university there.

So, I went to bed.

The information that DJ
had volunteered to us made

it very clear that Brendan
was afraid of the dark.

He wouldn't leave the apartment unless he
got permission from his father.

We could not rule out the
possibility that there was

somebody out there that was
preying on young children.

While we were conducting interviews,
other detectives in our unit were also

canvassing for surveillance video in the
location of where Brendan was found.

We found one camera that was approximately
75 yards from where Brendan was found.

It backs up right to Edison Woods.

We were desperate for any type of information
or clue that this video would show us.

We were trying to obviously see if we see
Brendan on video, or anyone that's with

Brendan at that time,
or a flashlight or anything

that we could focus on
during that time frame.

When we looked at the video and we didn't
find anything, there was frustration.

I felt like I hit a wall.

We were not getting anywhere with CCTV.

Brendan's funeral, that day
was a blur of a memory in

my mind, but I do recall
so many people showing up.

For me, it was really just a process of
grieving, trying to understand,

and, you know, hoping that you woke up
from the nightmare.

At the funeral, my best friend, her mother
played his favorite song on the violin.

We are me!

It was a nice tribute to Brendan.

He liked the Beatles from his dad.

I have not listened to that song this day.

I just, I just can't.

We had a lack of any DNA or physical
evidence.

So, in this case, digital forensic
evidence was crucial.

Do you have a phone?

I do.

Yes.

During the initial interview with DJ,
we requested consent for his phone,

so we could access text
messages, call logs, anything that

we thought was relevant
to the criminal investigation.

I manually went through his phone,
and I noticed that there was at least nine

or ten phone calls the previous night to
his 17-year-old girlfriend, Julia Stensky.

My spidey sense went off at that point.

Why is someone calling someone nine or ten
times in a row?

We had to transport it to
our high-tech crimes unit so

they could do a forensic
extraction of the cell phone.

When we go through DJ
Corrado's phone, we observe

the 9,000 text messages
between him and Julia.

When I reviewed the text messages,
I noticed that Julia and DJ, they had a

good relationship, and that was primarily
in the summertime.

However, when school started, I noticed
that the text messages were getting,

uh, a little, a little more dramatic.

There was a lot of arguments.

There was a lot of fighting.

In particular, a lot of the
arguments surrounded DJ's son,

Brendan, and some of these
text messages are very disturbing.

Based off the text messages,
we had to really look at

Julia as a potential
suspect in this investigation.

When we interviewed Julia, she was able to
tell us that she was in Haddon Township

that weekend, leading up to Brendan's
death.

Let me ask you, when did you leave,
actually?

Monday morning.

Monday morning.

What time is that at?

545's... 555 around that area.

A.M.

Where did you go?

Trefton.

How did you get there?

He took his dad's truck and drove him to
Trefton's.

Yeah, I had to catch the 648 Express to
New York.

Julia wasn't too fond of
Brendan, however, she kind

of minimized how she felt
about him in our interview.

I remember on the second date, we went
to a wild book, he told me he had a kid.

And I was like, great, I don't care.

I told him I'm not a big kid person.

I'm not like, oh my God, it's good.

I have to say bye to it.

When I see this kid, it's not that I'm
mean to him or I'm rude.

Like, no, I'm more taken
out on DJ the fact that

I have to be around the
kid than the kid himself.

Her disdain towards
his son is extremely

suspicious, and it
raises a lot of red flags.

We determined that Julia was a potential
suspect in the death of Brendan Criado.

We needed it to determine if she was able
to establish an alibi, and if she actually

went back to New York for school that
Monday.

For us to do that, we've applied for a
court order to get Julia's call records.

Your phone is a digital footprint wherever
you go.

If you have a phone on you, we can track
you.

We wanted to track Julia's whereabouts in
the 24 hours leading up to Brendan's death.

We had to locate CCTV at the Trenton train
station.

And to confirm that DJ actually did drop
her off on the morning of October 12th.

We were able to determine
that Julia was dropped off

by DJ in a pickup truck
at approximately 6.48 AM.

The CCTV video showed Julia entering the
train station.

She then gets on the train headed for New
York.

Her cell phone provider
showed her phone pinging in

New York City on October
12th and early October 13th.

In addition to that, we had
contacted her university and

were able to get her swipe
times from her college ID.

Which would show that she had swiped in to
her residence hall.

We determined that
Julia was not in Hatton

Township during a time
when Brendan went missing.

We ruled out Julia as a potential suspect
due to the digital evidence.

Now we had to really look at every
possible person that had access to Brendan.

When we interviewed DJ, I noticed that I
would ask DJ questions, but he just kept

talking and just volunteering information
to me.

Last night, my sister texted me asking me
if she can give him a bath.

And I said, yeah, that's fine.

I brought him over there.

They gave him a bath.

And they brought it back to my house.

I said to him, I said, what time do you
bring him back?

They said, 8.30.

Some of the reactions I was getting from
him didn't seem like a normal response.

Almost like a rehearsed response.

No!

So it was important now to
focus on DJ and really dive

into the text messages
exchanged between DJ and Julia.

We didn't know who was responsible.

They just couldn't give us a lot of
information.

You know in your heart, Brendan is in
heaven, but just always have that pain.

So it was very hard.

Homicide has changed in the course of the
last decade or so.

Where it used to be that
digital forensics played a role in

certain cases, now they play
a role in every single case.

This was really where my role came into
this case.

I had that phone extraction at home at
night, sitting on the couch, next to my

wife with my laptop open and a glass of
wine and scrolling through 9,000 text

messages uncovering
what this relationship

was like between Julia
Stensky and DJ Kriana.

There's something about going through
someone's cell phone.

It's voyeuristic to peer through someone's
personal messages.

The text messages showed that DJ was
becoming more and more jealous and

paranoid over the course of their
relationship.

He was jealous and paranoid
about the time she was spending

up at school with other classmates,
including male classmates.

One of the most significant
pieces of evidence in the

investigation was the
exchange fight on October 6th.

They effectively had an all-out argument
about Brendan being in DJ Kriana's life.

I remember discovering
that evidence and my mouth

dropping open with some
of the things that were said.

Investigating a case into the death of a
child and someone suggests that they want

the child out of my life and that is the
response.

That is an explosive piece of evidence.

In DJ Kriana's cell phone extraction,
we were able to determine that a number of

text messages or iChats had been deleted
from the device itself.

4,486 messages were deleted.

To further our investigation,
we also retrieved social

media data from Snapchat and
Facebook through court orders.

We were able to determine that DJ was
monitoring her social media.

What we learned was that
DJ was jealous of another

student that she was talking
to and potentially seeing.

That was driving DJ mad.

She was looking to move on and DJ was not
willing to let go of her.

DJ was the first person I ever dated.

I knew him at that point for nine years.

It makes you think a lot in question.

Do you really even know someone?

One of the strongest things that you can
do with digital forensic evidence is you

can take an interview from someone have
them describe what they did and then you

have their digital footprint from their
phone and you can compare and you can

contrast and you can know where they lied
to you.

Any person can sit across
from you and tell you a story

but the phone and the
digital footprint can't lie.

I read them as bedtime stories.

Now we've read three books before I let
them move on to bed.

Okay.

I read the first book was
Yertle the Turtle and then

go to the places she'll go
and then it was the Lorax.

I go to my room and I'm
trying to talk to my girlfriend

and I didn't get a hold of
her anymore so I went to bed.

His phone told a different story.

What time did you go to sleep last night?

Around like 10 o'clock.

It's around like 10 o'clock.

And you said you slept all night?

Yes.

You didn't do anything in the middle of
the night?

I don't think so.

You don't think so?

We have to be very clear here,
David.

I was having a lot of anxiety with my
girlfriend talking to the sky.

Right.

I had my phone next to my
bed but I know I walked into her

Snapchat and I saw she was
getting a stab from that guy.

This phone showed that he was logged into
Julia Stensky's Snapchat account updating

and reviewing stories up and until
approximately 1.30 in the morning.

So we brought Cornerstone Discovery who
were experts in digital forensic evidence

into this case because we
were hoping that we'd find

some type of clue that
will help break the case.

With digital evidence the information is
out there and it can be obtained.

30 years ago, you may be able to hide your
footprints.

Today, there's a slim chance.

There was one photo in particular that was
significant on DJ Criado's cell phone

extraction and that was a photo that was
taken two days before Brennan's death.

It was important to determine where this
picture was taken.

How close was it to where Brennan was
found?

I was able to examine the metadata that's
associated with this picture.

The date, time, and latitude and
longitude.

Once I was able to actually pull this
information to determine where it was,

precisely, I was in shock.

In these investigations, you always hope
that the digital evidence gives you

something that you can really say this is
it.

When you put those coordinates of the
photograph on a map and see exactly where

it landed and you see where they found the
body,

I just thought at that point, oh my gosh,

this picture says it all.

What are the chances of this picture being
taken just prior to Brennan's death being

on DJ's phone within feet of where
Brennan's body was found?

After we learned that DJ had retained the
lawyer and we were not going to be able to

speak to him again, we tried to find other
ways to get information from DJ.

I asked Samantha if she would record a
conversation between her and DJ.

They wanted me to hold a dummy cell phone
that recorded.

Okay, next time.

I met DJ at his parents' house
to just see if I could get any

information that didn't match
up to his initial statement.

No, I like my PS5 stuff.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what
happened.

There's so many different scenarios that
are possible.

I mean, it's hard.

It's hard for me because I know deep down
I can't see you doing that.

Your first thought is not necessarily
that, you know, someone that close to

Brennan would be involved and do something
like that.

But there could have possibly been a
chance.

It has energy that guided me forward.

It has to have an energy that's dropping
me.

To me, that would be very spiritual and I
wouldn't be in that area so it would be so

energy for concealing the truth of the
community that's kind of a bit more powerful.

When I listened to this
consensual recording, I felt

that DJ was clearly
responsible for Brennan's death.

I couldn't imagine
Samantha listening to

that and not thinking
that what is DJ saying?

Why is he telling me this?

Handcuffed and surrounded by detectives,
David Criado Jr., also known as DJ,

did not say a word as he was led into the
Haddon Township Police Department.

On January 11th, 2016, DJ Criado was
arrested and taken into custody charged

with first-degree murder and the death of
Brennan Criado.

On that day, when DJ
was indicted, I made it very

clear that I wanted to put
the handcuffs on DJ Criado.

When we arrest somebody, that's just half
the battle.

The next part is the most difficult
part of a homicide investigation

and that is to take a case
to trial and get a conviction.

Tight-lipped prosecutors finally laid out
their case against DJ Criado.

They described him as a jealous boyfriend
who killed his three-year-old son in an

effort to save a relationship with his
17-year-old girlfriend.

Julia Stenske, she was
involved in this case,

but in no way was she
ever charged with a crime.

In no way was she ever accused of being
involved in the death of Brennan Criado.

The digital evidence in this case was our
best evidence.

But we knew heading into this case that
this trial was going to be difficult.

One of the things that we wanted to do for
trial was present the day of the 12th as

this kind of crescendo in DJ Criado's mind
of this obsessive behavior.

Throughout the day, there are obsessive
texts sent from DJ Criado to Julia Stenske

about what she's doing, who she's talking
with, where'd she go after class.

There's multiple messages during the day
and leading into the night

where he calls her over and over and over
again.

After they have a text thread that
says goodnight at approximately 10 p.m.

, he logs into Julia Stenske's Snapchat
account and views a message from a male

classmate that he was specifically jealous
of.

And it's this jealousy and paranoia that
plays out.

And then as to what I think happened,
I think that that night the obsession

boiled over for DJ Criado and in a moment
of

violence, in a moment
of selfishness, desperation,

I think that he put a
pillow over his son's face.

And I think he carried him down to the
creek and laid him in a spot that he felt

was a special place.

As you say that, everyone off the
background.

Jury is not in a position
to be able to reach the

consensus or the unanimous
verdict of this matter.

I'm going to reschedule the matter for
July 5th to retry the case.

The jury wasn't able to come to a
unanimous decision.

The judge declares a
mistrial and the case goes

right back onto the
trial list to be tried again.

To have it end anticlimactically like that
was extremely frustrating.

We felt angry when
we heard that two jurors

didn't find him guilty
beyond a reasonable doubt.

I just feel like you never really had any
closure.

After the mistrial we were informed that
we could go for a second trial and if that

unfortunately did not work
out all charges would be

dropped and he would
basically get to go scot-free.

I...

I wish I had gotten a
guilty verdict at the first trial

and DJ would be put in
prison the rest of his life.

But DJ decided to take a plea deal.

He was going to plead
not to murder but to

an amended count of
aggravated manslaughter.

In exchange, we'd recommend a
sentence of 10 years New Jersey

State prison and 85% without
the possibility of parole.

The idea whether or not justice was served
is a complicated question and I'd leave

that to Brennan's loved ones to make that
determination.

Having a grandchild
is a... a pleasure.

Something I loved.

Are you all done?

All done!

I couldn't enjoy I couldn't enjoy other
kids for a very long time.

Or enjoy somebody else's happiness of
having a child.

Because you couldn't really be happy for
people that you're close to.

Just brings a lot of division when the
anger sets in.

You think you... you know someone
and then they betray you you in the...

worst way possible.

It was really hard
to... live life afterwards.

I just really miss him being here.

He was so fun, so loving, and
just... the sunshine of your day.
