You see kids all the
time on the news and

something's happened
or they've gone missing.

You just feel for the parents.

It was just really hard to kind of be one
of those parents.

The girls' parents were asked about the
digital devices the girls had access to.

Their digital devices
could hold the clues that we

needed to find where they
went and who they went with.

Parents used to tell
their kids, be scared of

strangers in the real
world down the street.

But now it's be careful of strangers
anywhere in the world.

It's okay.

It's okay.

Don't use this in here.

Yeah, you're not afraid of anything.

I can't.

A little bit of, you know, thinking I was
going to forget about her.

We all grew up as a family.

Matt was, you know, dad to Jayden,
and I was mom to Matt's son.

All right, Jayden, you open one now.

Jayden got along really well with her
siblings.

Her and her brother, they did a lot of
stuff together.

She also played the violin in school,
and so she got into listening to orchestra

music and she wanted
to go to concerts and see

that kind of stuff where
the orchestra would play.

She was shy in school, but at home she was
definitely outgoing.

Almost to a point where it was,
like, too much.

She was generally a good kid.

She was always very independent and
determined.

And that was one of the
challenging things, is if she wanted

to do something, she would
usually find a way to do it.

As she got older, she got different phones
that had internet access on them.

And she wanted to download all these
different apps that I suppose other kids had.

Around the age of 13, she
kind of started to have an interest

in older boys, or older boys
were trying to contact her.

We would take a look at her devices and
there would be inappropriate stuff from

them, saying stuff that any 13-year-old
girl would want to hear.

You want to call the police and have them
do something and you can't.

I would monitor her devices and kind of
take these precautions to keep her safe

and explain that this kind of stuff isn't
normal.

It's not okay to get these type of
messages from boys or men.

So after we found messages like that,
we wouldn't let her have a passcode on her

phone so that we could check it whenever
and wouldn't allow her to have it,

you know, at night when she was in bed or
whatever.

So the emotions that I first felt was just
anger and just kind of helplessness too.

Jayden was over at a friend's house.

Our houses were right next to each other.

We had told her to be home between 8 or
8.30 that night.

In Minnesota, it was already dark at that
time.

I was putting our daughter to bed.

I was reading her story and I heard the
door open.

So I thought that Jayden was home.

I kept reading a story and finished
putting our daughter to bed.

And then I went downstairs.

And she's not in the house.

I called Jayden's friend's house to see if
Jayden was still over there.

They told me no.

They weren't over there.

I got very anxious and very
worried because it couldn't have

taken longer than two minutes
to walk over to our house.

I knew something was not right.

I was at a Cub Scout meeting
with our son and Angie

called me saying that Jayden
and her friend were missing.

Our thought was they
couldn't have gotten far,

but you know, your
mind goes to the worst.

So I went home and we started
searching through Jayden's

room, kind of looking for
any clue as to where they went.

She had left her phone and her devices at
home.

So we talked to the neighbors
and found out that our friend

had left her stuff at home
to her electronic devices.

And that was one of the things that
escalated our fear because we felt like

that wasn't accidental,
that she left her phone

behind so we couldn't track
her location or anything.

Jayden had a cell phone.

She also had an iPod touch and neither one
of them had passcodes on them.

So we were easily able to get in and see
if we could find out where they went.

So we started going
through her phone looking

for any kind of messages
or clues or anything.

And we kept going back and forth to the
neighbors and sort of updating each other

and finding out that they hadn't talked to
any other friends.

And we really started to get worried and
concerned.

We did find a note from her kind of
explaining that she was leaving and that

she loved us and she would miss us, but
she didn't want to live with us anymore.

My heart dropped.

My stomach just went hollow.

We decided to call 9-1-1.

We received the 9-1-1 calls and a patrol
officer went to the girls' homes.

It's not uncommon for law enforcement to
receive reports of missing juveniles.

Many times they leave
for parties or they want

to see friends that
parents don't approve of.

When the police came, I mean, it gave me a
little bit of relief to know that we have

somebody that's going to be here to help
us.

And they're taking it serious.

Some of the items that
were found in the girls'

bedrooms were things
like backpacks, cash.

There were notes found in both of the girls'
rooms indicating that they were leaving.

There wasn't much of an indication of where
they were going or what they were doing.

The notes did make
us believe that they had

left, at least initially,
under their own power.

The neighborhood the girls lived in did
not have any public transportation and

they didn't have access to any type of
vehicle.

So the belief was, is that
they either left on foot or would

have had to have someone
working with them to pick them up.

Our patrol division was
sent to the area to assist

with the family in
looking for the children.

Checking the streets, checking local
parks, any businesses that may have been

within walking distance in an attempt to
find them.

We had contacted the Minnesota State
Patrol to assist with their helicopter to

search some of the areas around the
neighborhood with their infrared system.

There was a lot of wooded area that would
have been difficult to search on foot.

So the infrared system
from the State Patrol was the

easiest and fastest way
for us to search those areas.

There was kind of some hunting shacks in
the woods.

Maybe they knew about
them and they could possibly

have gone out there
just to hide for the night.

So the police took a look to see if they
were there.

While our patrol division was looking for
the girls, our priority initially was to

collect as much information about the
missing girls as we could.

Learning about them
would help us to understand

potentially who they
had been in contact with.

The girls' parents were asked about the
digital devices the girls had access to.

We had hoped that devices could also be
used to find where the girls may have gone.

Jane's cell phone had
been left behind, so we

were unable to use that
to track her movements.

Jane's friend did not
have a phone, so there

was no way to track
her movements either.

Both of the girls had
iPod Touches, which were

devices that functioned
very similar to a cell phone.

They did not have cell phone service,
but once connected to Wi-Fi, they could be

used to send messages, make phone calls
through applications.

That could have provided us with just as
much information as a cell phone.

But Jane's friend had an iPod Touch that
had a passcode.

Her parents had tried to get into it
several times, but without any success.

The passcode on the
device concerned us about

what potentially was
being hidden on that device.

The longer the girls
were gone, the greater the

concern that something
may have happened to them.

We needed to locate these girls as quickly
as we could.

There's a lot of emotions going through
everybody at the time.

The police were phenomenal
about staying in touch and

keeping us up to date on
where they were searching.

I started just driving around the
neighborhood.

The biggest feeling I had was helplessness
and fear.

Rationally, I knew that they weren't
nearby.

Did they get picked up by somebody in some
child sex trafficking ring or what?

Are they on their way to another country
somewhere?

It's just, it's the worst feeling as a
parent.

I remember getting a call at three o'clock
in the morning, sound asleep.

I immediately drove straight to the
office.

So I have specialized training and
experience in examining digital devices

such as computers and cell phones and
iPods.

My supervisor advised me that
we had some missing children

and they needed my expertise
to start analyzing devices.

I'm a parent myself and it would be a
parent's worst nightmare to have their

children disappear in the middle of the
night.

Officers at the scene had discovered several
devices that the girls had access to.

Teenagers, they use their devices almost
like a diary nowadays.

They're always using, they're always
searching.

There may be evidence of a crime or maybe
evidence of where the girls had gone to.

Something will be on there.

So I started with checking Jaden's phone.

I checked all the internal applications.

This device was more of a communicate with
the parents device.

It didn't appear to be used recently,
probably in the last week or two.

Then I looked at Jaden's iPod Touch.

It was unlocked so I was
able to do a quick examination

on that, checking the
applications and chats.

I could not find any concerning or
troubling information.

The next device I looked at was Jaden's
friend's iPod Touch.

And then ran into a bit of a problem.

Unfortunately, someone had already entered
the incorrect passcode many times.

This is a very troubling thing to run
into.

After 10 unsuccessful attempts,
the device would be disabled.

I know that if I enter
one more wrong password,

I could lose all the
data on this device.

And if I lose that evidence, we might not
find them.

We did follow as many leads as we could
with the personnel that we had.

Throughout the night, law
enforcement continued to check the

area to see if they could find
the girls on foot somewhere.

I had to keep in regular
contact with the parents,

keep them informed
about what we were doing.

The more time that a child is missing,
the greater the concern becomes.

Then I looked at the desktop computer.

I ran a forensic tool called NetAnalysis.

It appeared the girls had been using
different messaging applications.

And one was very concerning.

The website Omegle.

Omegle is a website for strangers to meet
up and talk to each other over video.

The Omegle website is not a website that
children should be accessing.

The fact that the girls were
on Omegle was concerning

because of the anonymity
of everyone on that site.

The site instantly pairs you with a
stranger.

Most of the time, it's an adult.

And there's no screen
names or passwords or email

addresses associated with
anyone that uses that website.

Finding out who these Omegle users are
would be extremely time consuming.

We simply don't have time to wait for
legal process.

With young girls being missing,
time is of the essence.

While Matt was driving around looking for
the girls, I couldn't relax.

I felt like I needed to do something.

I was calling her friends to see if
perhaps they knew anything.

It was terrifying to not have any answers.

Hours going by and just waiting and wondering
what was happening to your little girl.

And where she could be.

I was able to retrieve some
of the message fragments

from some of these
different chat conversations.

I saw that these girls were chatting with
adult men.

And some of the content shows that these
men are from out of state.

It could be very difficult to track these
people down.

In the chat, there was talk of where these
girls lived.

And these girls were willingly giving out
their address.

As I'm going through these messages,
my thoughts are of the parents.

How worried they are about their girls and
where they are.

Parents used to tell
their kids, be scared of

strangers in the real
world, just down the street.

But now it's, be careful of strangers
anywhere in the world.

I was definitely hoping
that Matt found them walking

on, you know, the side of
the road, hiding somewhere.

And they would walk through the door.

I was hoping that it wasn't
somebody that had picked

her up or somebody that
they had been talking to online.

Um... And that came to get him.

I don't even know how to explain it.

Like, are we ever going to see her again?

It was a long, long night and a blur for
most of the night.

The morning came around, I was just
absolutely worried.

You see kids all the time on the news,
something's happened or they've gone missing.

You just feel for the parents.

It was just really hard to kind of be one
of those parents.

The next morning, I was going around door
to door to the neighbors, handing out

flyers and asking if any of the neighbors
had seen them.

The previous night, thinking any,
any little bit of information,

no matter how small or trivial.

You know, if we could even
find somebody that had seen them

walking somewhere or
whatever, that it might be helpful.

Many of the search efforts
that had been conducted

overnight had been exhausted
without locating the girls.

So at this point in the investigation,
it seems like Jaden and her friend may

have been taken advantage of by a stranger
on the internet.

When we first heard about Omegle from the
detectives, we had no idea what it was.

We looked it up and realized that it was
kind of an app that you could just talk to

strangers and anybody basically in the
world.

It was really, really, really startling to
us that the Omegle app was built to be

completely anonymous where you couldn't
trace who you were talking to or anything.

These 13-year-old girls
can get access to it, so there's

no safety net to prevent that
type of stuff from happening.

You can't keep up with it.

All the different ways that people can get
in touch with your children.

And how simple and easy it is.

A couple clicks, and that's all it takes
for something to start.

We kind of confirmed
our worst fears and that they

were making friends online
with complete strangers.

And then the fears just escalate.

Are they going to be okay?

Are they going to be alive?

Jaden's friend's mother had told me that
she had been looking into the potential

passcode for the locked device and had
come up with a suggestion.

We were very hopeful that this suggestion
was going to be the one that unlocked it.

I was nervous.

At this point, it was kind
of a gamble where we

had one more possibility
and it better be right.

This is the last try.

It was a tense moment.

As I'm typing it in, I'm very concerned
that I may just lock this device forever

and lose any information on how to find
these girls.

It unlocks.

I can't believe that we finally got into
this device.

And I just have a relief come over me that
I may finally get the evidence that I need.

I start doing a quick once over to see
what devices this iPod Touch has been

talking to or what applications has been
used.

I went through and scrolled
through about two weeks

worth of chats and many of
them were sexually explicit.

It really made me angry
that there's people out there

that are taking advantage
of children like this.

And I can see that they were messaging
someone right before they disappeared.

The very last message was
at approximately 8.30 at night,

about an hour before the
parents reported them missing.

My worst fear has been realized.

Someone from the internet has kidnapped
them.

You want to get the word out fast and what
better way to do that than to contact the

media and get her picture and her name out
there.

But it's also overwhelming
to have that attention

on you and to see her
on the news and stuff.

We had the media and all the news channels
just descended on the neighborhood and

there was news trucks and reporters all
over the street in front of our houses.

We made some posters with her picture on
there and kind of what she was last

wearing and where she was last seen and
tried to get those out as fast as we could.

I was just trying to do what I could to
see if anybody saw her anywhere.

You just feel like helpless.

You just wander back.

When we had gotten into the lock device,
we found one text chain that had over 800

messages, many of them very sexually
graphic.

And ultimately pointing us
in a direction of someone we

believed may have been
involved in their disappearance.

On this iPod Touch, there was no name for
this phone number.

The phone number is all we got.

I run this phone number through a database
called Clear.

I found a match right away.

So at this point, the results showed that
the phone belonged to a 23-year-old male,

Casey Lee Chin.

The city where Casey Lee
Chin lived was in Burnsville,

which is about an hour
south of where the girls lived.

I checked to see if there were any
criminal records.

We had nothing on this individual.

That gave me some relief, but also at the
same time, maybe he's been under the radar.

It also appeared that he had a social
media presence.

He had multiple pictures of young girls.

Appeared to be in high school.

We found out that he was a coach for a
local high school team.

Digital evidence is in every crime now.

In some cases, it's almost better than DNA
or fingerprints.

People have their phones on them all the
time.

They're always updating their social
media.

Applications are tracking their
whereabouts.

Sharing information with others.

So in the course of my career,
I've seen the dangers of the internet and

the underbelly of the internet,
that people call it.

But also, there's some good to the
internet and technology where law

enforcement is able to use some of these
tools to solve some of these crimes.

Once I had seen the nature of the
conversations that they were having and

knowing that this was an adult man,
that had made arrangements to pick up two

13-year-old girls, I was extremely
concerned for their welfare.

We began an emergency phone
ping to attempt to locate where

his cell phone was at, and
hopefully the girls as well.

Cell phone location information
can be extremely accurate

based on the strength of
the signal that the device has.

There are times that we can locate a
device within 10 meters.

In this case, unfortunately, the strength
of signal was not great, and we were given

a cell phone ping information with a
four-mile radius.

That radius did include Casey Chin's home,
but it also included parts of the

international airport,
and the hotels surrounding

the airport were included
in that potential radius.

If they were near the airport,
are they planning to leave somewhere,

or are they just simply using a hotel near
the airport?

If he had rented a
room there, it would be

difficult for us to find
him in these hotels.

The radius of Casey's cell phone ping also
included Mall of America.

There are hundreds
of stores as well as a

full amusement park
in the center of the mall.

Searching an area that
large with no further

information would
be incredibly difficult.

We decided to prioritize
checking his home first, in the hopes

that that was where he was,
versus the other larger areas.

We surrounded the house
to ensure that there was no

way for him to escape out
a back door or a window.

A young man answered the door,
and he confirmed he was Casey Chin.

Casey was asked if anyone was in the house
with him, and he indicated there wasn't.

I told Casey that we were going to enter
his house.

We asked Casey to step out of the home.

He leaned into me and said, I have to tell
you something.

I was not expecting to be found at all.

I remember exactly, almost exactly how it
happened actually.

There was a knock at the front door.

Casey had us hide behind the couch.

After a few minutes, I hear, like, a bunch
of people start stomping down the stairs.

And I was crying, and my friend was crying,
and we didn't know what was going on.

We were really scared to look.

And eventually, one
of the police found us,

and they started
yelling to everyone else.

Oh, we found them.

They're back here.

After we were found, my friend was taken
in a separate police car.

And then one of the police officers,
who was a woman, brought me to her car.

I was out putting up the missing persons
posters around town.

I got the call from one of the detectives
saying that they found them.

Relief washed over me.

I just went home and, you know,
I hugged my aunt and I hugged my mom.

I said that she was safe.

And she was going to come home.

It was just an immediate, huge relief.

Followed by wondering, you know, what had
he done to them while they were with him.

At the police station, I was still in a
lot of shock.

And after my police
investigation, I went to

the hospital to get a
sexual assault exam.

That was still very shocking.

It took a really long time to process that
this happened and this was actually real.

Casey Chin was arrested and taken into
custody for kidnapping.

All right, so when did you meet him?

How long ago was it?

Um, we met on Omegle probably about a
month ago.

And we just started talking and talking
and talking.

Casey started telling me he had been
contacted by these two girls.

He explained that he was
told that they were in abusive

households and wanted to get
out because it wasn't safe for them.

But based on everything that the
investigation had shown to that point,

there was no indication of abuse or bad
homes for either one of the girls.

When I was a teenager,
my mom and I started

butting heads because I
wanted more independence.

She was pretty strict with rules.

My reaction at the time to the rules was
pretty angry with my mother.

But she means a lot to me.

And I really care about her and she's done
so much for me.

And she has done everything in her power
to keep me safe.

And Matt has pretty much been the only
father figure in my life.

And we have a really good relationship
too.

So what was the benefit for you to take
them in?

Keeping them safe, taking care of them,
making sure that they had a home.

That was my benefit, was knowing that two
girls are safe.

When we had left Casey's
home, detectives had

remained behind to
conduct a search warrant.

A makeshift bed was found hidden behind
the couch.

In addition, there
were some tissues and

girls' underwear found
in the basement as well.

During the search warrant, several digital
devices were located at Casey's home.

These would provide evidence of anything
that did happen between Casey and the girls.

As I'm searching through the phone,
I'm finding innocent things.

Pictures of friends and family and
animals.

Selfies, things like that.

Until I come across pictures of what
appeared to be the missing girls.

There were selfies of Casey and Jayden.

And it appeared that they may not have
been fully clothed.

As I'm looking, I'm getting updates from
the interview.

So it was just going to disappear and be
that way?

And, you know, I was going to discuss with
them later this week about education.

And whether they wanted to finish up by
being homeschooled.

And... Or taking online school.

Because I didn't want them not
to... Not finish their education.

Because all their education is important.

Yeah.

He's portraying himself
as this great guy who

has saved these girls
from a bad home life.

And in the phone, I'm actually finding
that he's a pedophile.

Yeah.

The stuff that we're working on.

Oh, perfect.

communicate sexually with them?

You know, sexting as they call it?

So, I mean, I guess I'm...
A little bit curious about...

What that kind of stuff is about.

I mean, we talked about it.

And it never happened.

It's the ones that should make out and...

And...

And...

And that never happened.

Am I going to have to go and ask them and
come back with another surprise?

Because we've already done that once.

We've already went down that road once.

Where... If making
out... If making out...

Is a sexual act.

He went on to describe in graphic
detail...

Exactly what happened between him and each
of the girls that night.

I've never spoken publicly about this
before.

Me and my friend had spoken about running
away.

But for me personally, it was that...

I was just... Sick of fighting with
my mom all the time and the rules.

And I just wanted to get away from it all.

My friend and I, when we had
sleepovers, that was one of the

things that we would do just to
mess around and have fun was...

Go on chat sites and message people and
like chatting with people online,

which was this new exciting thing.

It was just really nice to get attention.

And on Omegle, we met this guy on there.

And he was saying a lot of sexual stuff.

He gave my friend his number.

This was something that my friend and I
talked about for a really long time.

I kept thinking to myself, this isn't
going to happen.

This is... this isn't real.

She packed a quick bag of
clothes and I, like, went back

home and packed a quick bag
and then ran back over there.

And we had two small backpacks.

I knew it was wrong.

It felt wrong.

I was...

I felt like I can't back out.

And we walked down the street and kind of
hidden, stood by a tree under,

like, under a pine tree
or something like that

on a street corner waiting
for Casey to pull up.

And then eventually we
saw his car come down

the road and stopped
right in front of us.

And then we got in.

Probably, like, 15 minutes into being in
the car is when it actually hit me that,

oh, my God, what is happening?

This is... this is real.

What's... what's going on?

I don't know this guy.

What are we doing?

I kind of want to go back home.

I regret this.

I remember not having too many thoughts or
emotions.

Just... It was going through
the motions and going, okay,

and this happened, and then
this happened, and this happened.

He dropped us off about a street block
down from his house in an effort to hide

us from everyone because he knew what he
was doing was wrong.

I remember at one point we hopped one
fence into someone's backyard,

and as we were hopping the next fence,
a dog started barking at us.

And then we had to jump that fence and
then got to his backyard.

And he wanted us to go through the
basement door.

Casey's initiated some,
like, sexual touching, and

he started to ask both of
us do sexual things to him.

Casey had me engage in more sexual
activity.

That went on for hours.

I felt like I couldn't leave.

I didn't really know what to do.

Checking through the history of the phone,
it appeared that Casey Lee Chin had plans

of taking videos of these girls and
sharing them with others on the internet.

And at that point, my heart was just
broken for these girls and their family.

Five months after Casey's arrest,
he ultimately pled guilty to charges of

criminal sexual conduct as well as
kidnapping.

Casey was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

In this case, the digital evidence was
crucial.

If we didn't have the evidence, who knows
how long it would have taken to find them.

I don't think there's
any sentence that can

take away the pain that
he caused our family.

You want to see more, but...

I think that the sentence was...

was fair.

As a parent of a child that got put
through that, I...

I feel a lot of anger towards him,
that this...

was the person that, you know,
took our child and did this to her.

There was a lot of people who blamed me
for what happened.

A ton of people who blamed me.

Um... It was class
peers who blamed me.

Parents of my friends blamed me.

It took a really long time for me to stop
thinking that way.

And kind of change my mindset on it.

And think... This
was... A bad guy.

And he shouldn't have done that.

There were things I shouldn't have done,
but I was a child.

I was angry at Casey for taking the
innocence of a 13-year-old girl.

It was a long road of recovery.

We tried to be fair and
realize that, you know, kids will

be kids and they need to
open their wings and fly too.

But even though this happened,
this didn't hinder her future.

Having to go through therapy, I think,
really helped.

And I... I really like the
concept and ideas of...

and therapy techniques that I'm learning
about.

Um... The experience I had...

100% drove me to finding that as...

a passion and what I want to do for the
rest of my life.

Life right now is really great.

I am attending the University
of Minnesota and I graduate

next spring with an undergrad
in Family Social Science.

I want to be able to help someone else
who...

a similar situation to me.

Jayden has definitely
turned into a beautiful young

lady, and she has not let
this incident hold her back.

I hope that she, you know, realizes that
too.

That... we never gave up on her.

I don't mean to the way, but another
reality...
