Yeah, this is... I'm reporting regarding
my co-worker.

She didn't show up for work for last two
days.

I came here and I'm knocking at the door.

She didn't answer the phone.

And then I just slightly pressed the door.

She's sitting on the chair and her face is
all black spots on her face.

I got scared and came out.

I don't know if she's alive or...

We need emergency medical help,
please.

This was a case that really shook the
community.

Karen was living alone in
this very suburban community

and she was found brutally
murdered in her home.

It was a very graphic, very horrific
scene.

We weren't clear on who our potential
suspects could be.

But then we received that little device.

This could tell us who our killer was.

Karen never caught in sick.

She was always on time to work.

When she didn't show for two days,
I got really worried.

But I had a message, no answer.

My emotions were running high.

I was like, oh my God, why she's not
answering my phone?

Which, she had never done that before.

I got worried and then I went to her
house.

So then I just thought, maybe let me try
the door.

The door was unlocked.

I went inside.

There I saw Karen.

And in my head, I knew Karen was not there
anymore.

She moved at all?

Is she moving at all?

I just went inside.

And I just came out.

Is she moving down like she's passed away?

Hello, San Jose police?

Hello?

San Jose police?

She's probably gonna be 10-5-5.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

I know I shouldn't be asking you this
question.

No, no, no.

Go ahead.

But can I ask you, was it a foul play or
she had some kind of reaction?

I, you know, I don't know exactly.

It, it, it looks like I'm self-inflicted,
but I, I can't tell.

I was at home with my
family having dinner when

we got notified of
this particular incident.

I was told that, uh, an older female was
found inside her house alone, uh,

by a friend of hers.

My understanding was that it was a pretty
graphic scene, pretty violent scene.

Being a homicide
investigator, you just never

know what you're
going to be up against.

Once I arrived at the scene, I met up
with, uh, Sergeant Mike Montanay.

Her house from the front looked clean and
kept.

There was nothing unusual about that.

And then we walk into the kitchen area.

And that was the, that was a shocker.

One of the very first things that I
noticed were some of the wounds,

uh, to her head and neck.

The wounds were very deep and very
violent.

This woman had been deceased for some
time.

And as we looked at her closer,
we saw, you know, the knife in her hand.

And it made me think, could this be a
suicide?

But I recall seeing a
plate containing four slices

of pizza, which was wrapped
up in an aluminum foil.

This female might have been sharing it
with someone else.

And that person could have been
potentially responsible for what happened.

I remember seeing, uh,
that piece of paper on

the floor that had, uh,
10-5-7 written on it.

And, um, I was like, huh, that's kind of
weird.

That's her address, right?

Could it be that somebody had her address,
came to visit her, and then there was some

kind of a confrontation, and then she
ended up being killed?

We also found the cigarette butt at the
scene.

Uh, the cigarette butt didn't look like it
was lit when it was placed there,

because there were no ashes surrounding
it.

There were no burn marks on the linoleum.

Uh, and the cigarette butt appeared to
have been squashed, uh, almost like

somebody had stepped on it, or driven over
it.

It looked like the house
had been rummaged

through, like somebody
was looking for something.

So it looks like, obviously, somebody else
was there.

However, I worked
burglary just before I came to

Homicide, and I've examined
several hundred burglaries.

That's not generally how a burglary looks.

Uh, there were drawers pulled out, but it,
it didn't appear that anything was dumped.

TVs, computers, laptop,
uh, her car in the garage,

all of her electronic
property appeared to be there.

There was nothing taken that normally in
burglaries would be taken.

We had our concerns that the scene had
been staged.

Just too many things don't add up.

So the initial thoughts were, it's
undetermined.

We're gonna treat this as a homicide.

She was my co-worker for almost seven
years.

So sorry.

And then, uh, she was supposed to work
yesterday.

She didn't, like, she always calls,
she didn't show up.

The 911 caller was still at the scene.

And what's critical about
having her there is that

she can now give us
insight into this victim's life.

Karen was not only a friend, she's family.

She's like a sister.

When I first came to this country,
I was looking for a job.

The first person I met was Karen.

She was such a, uh, loving and caring
person.

Karen was a pharmacy tech for Regional
Medical Center.

She was doing a lot to make everybody
happy, giving everybody little gifts.

She didn't talk any negative thing about
anybody, you know?

And then, all of a sudden, you come to her
front door and you see what I saw.

I don't want to believe it to this day.

After talking with Amber about Karen, it
actually caused more questions to pop up.

Uh, because there was no indication that
Karen had a problem with anybody.

This was not one of those
investigations that there

was a, a clear indicator
as to a potential suspect.

So, a timeline and the
establishment of that timeline was

extremely critical to the
course of the investigation.

While we were taking a look at Karen,
we noticed a black band around her wrist.

I immediately recognized it as a Fitbit
because my son had one.

I knew that it stored different types of
data.

I knew that it collected step count.

Uh, I knew that it collected heart rate.

I also know that it was, uh, a watch.

That little device could solve this crime.

Uh, with that advancement
in investigative tools, uh,

we've also seen such an
advancement in technology.

You have things like Fitbit, Apple
watches, Facebook, you know, social media,

Google, uh, GPS tracking, your cell phone.

Back in the old days, that stuff didn't
exist.

I had never used any type of wearable
technology, uh, in an investigation.

If this Fitbit could tell
us when Karen's heart

rate ceased, uh, that
would be extremely critical.

The next morning, I got a call.

I was told I needed to get over to the
medical examiner's office as soon as possible.

When I walked into the
autopsy suite, they had shaved off

portions of Karen's hair, uh,
to reveal injuries to her head.

I could instantaneously see how violent
these particular injuries were.

When we initially saw her at the crime
scene, her hair was matted with blood.

Karen's hair covered up some very
significant injuries to her head.

The doctor who was performing her
examination described that any one of

these injuries to her head would have been
instantaneously incapacitating.

Which caused me great concern about the
injury to her neck.

If any of the wounds to her head would
have been incapacitating instantly,

there is no way Karen could have slashed
her own neck.

This was not a suicide.

It became very clear that it was a
homicide investigation.

We had discussed how long she believed she
might have been deceased for.

The doctor could not determine it.

And that caused us great concern.

Because we knew that
if we couldn't establish

when this occurred, we
were going to have issues.

But then we received the Fitbit from her.

I noticed that the lights on the bottom
were intermittently blinking.

We're in business.

We're over the first hump, which is that
it was on and it was functioning.

But we don't know what we're going to find
from it.

We're going to have to write a search
warrant and see if we can download the data.

So that was kind of a waiting game.

I was the police forensic analyst assigned
to this case.

When Crime Scene was doing their
collection of evidence at Karen's

residence, they found a receipt for
Luckys.

And that receipt was time stamped
September 7th, 16, 27 hours.

It was crucial for our investigation to
figure, was she with anybody?

Did somebody follow her out of the parking
lot?

And to try to narrow down when she was
actually last seen alive.

Fortunately, there was video
footage inside the store and

then outside the store that
captured the parking lot area.

We scrubbed backwards until we could see
her enter the store.

We were able to determine a female that
matched the same description as Karen.

We were interested in Karen's movements
and how she appeared in the video.

Karen's behaviors were normal.

She was engaging with the cashier.

She didn't appear to be peering over her
shoulder or afraid in any way.

There wasn't any person with her in the
car.

There wasn't anyone following her around.

This video surveillance
was really helpful in

narrowing down the time
when she was last seen.

Karen was definitely alive on Friday,
September 7th at 4.30.

We found out that the
coroner had already made

the death notification
to Karen's parents.

So we made an appointment to go meet with
the two of them over at their house.

They're a piece of the puzzle.

We want to know what kind of information
they have about their daughter.

Just talking to my record.

Time now is 13.38.

We are going to speak to the victim's parents
as Detective Meeker and Detective Mont.

We showed up over at the house as
scheduled.

And we knock on the front door.

And to the left is a large window with
like a curtain over it.

The curtain is pulled back.

And there's this five-foot, 90-year-old man
sitting there with a big smile on his face.

And he salutes us.

Brian and I both kind of looked at each
other like, was that a little strange to you?

And like, yeah, that was definitely weird.

Come in.

Hi, Anthony.

Hello, sir.

How are you?

Very good, sir.

Sergeant Montanay and I work in the
homicide unit.

We are charged with finding out what
happened, getting to the truth,

and figuring out who did what.

Yeah.

We're going to ask you a lot of questions.

It's okay.

I want to answer them because we gotta
catch this person.

We established that Karen was Adele's
biological daughter.

And Adele had remarried, so 90-year-old
Tony was her stepfather.

We had also learned that Karen did have a
brother that had passed away, but there

were no other close
family contacts or no other

boyfriends or former
husbands that Karen had.

During our discussions with Adele,
she had described that after Karen's

brother had passed, she saw definite
changes in Karen.

She became more reclusive.

She didn't really socialize with a lot of
people.

The loss of her brother was very traumatic
for her.

Has she mentioned anyone else recently
that she's had contact with that was new?

No.

Is there anybody at work she had a problem
with?

No.

Anybody in life she had a problem with?

There was nothing of significance that
they provided us related to other people.

But then that's when we started to figure
out the last time that they had seen her.

I brought the pizza over there.

And the cookies in a Ziploc bag.

Okay.

And the cookies that I make.

What day was that?

Saturday.

Do you remember about what time it was?

A little after three o'clock, wasn't it?

Yeah, it was night in the afternoon
sometimes.

So Saturday the 8th, about 3 p.m.

She went to the grocery store the day
before on September 7th.

And then now we have Tony going over to
her house the next day.

Every bit of information that we're receiving
is helping to narrow down our timeline.

So there was nobody else that was there
when you got there?

Yeah.

Did she mention that she was going to have
anybody over?

Yeah, she said she was going to have a
company.

When I brought the pizza and the cookies
over there, she goes, Oh, we got pizza,

we're going to have a party with my
friends.

I asked Tony if he had
seen her at any other point

after he took over the
pizza and the cookies.

He had mentioned later that same day
seeing Karen's car.

That was Saturday after you had dropped
off the pizza.

A little after five.

I was outside.

Which direction was she going?

That way.

She was going down toward Piedmont?

Yeah.

At five o'clock, she's seen driving towards
Piedmont past Adele and Tony's house.

And it was a person on the other side,
which you can't tell, but it wasn't either.

Okay, but there was definitely one other
person in the car with her.

We had to see if we could identify who
that second person was in her vehicle.

Later that afternoon at
5pm, because that person

was the last person to
see her alive potentially.

They could be responsible for murder.

Once we started looking into how to
extract the data from the Fitbit,

we started talking to folks at the Santa
Clara County Crime Lab.

Karen's Fitbit was using her desktop
through the Bluetooth connection to sync

with Fitbit's servers over the internet
approximately every 15 minutes.

But they explained to us they did not have
the ability to extract that data.

The data wasn't necessarily
stored on Karen's computer,

but it was used more as a
doorway to Fitbit's servers.

We understood it would probably require
something that only Fitbit could do.

So we started making some phone calls to
the company.

We knew once the device
was sent off, it would take

at least a couple of days
to do their examination.

We really wanted to get answers for
Karen's family and relatives and friends.

I was just grieving for Karen.

It was just like I would have grief for my
family member.

My emotions were... I don't know.

I was just crying.

I was sad.

My heart was saying, no, that cannot
happen to Karen.

She's here.

She will be with us.

It didn't sync.

It didn't sync even then.

I feel like I lost somebody that,
you know, I can always lean on.

I can always talk to.

Just very sad, but also very, um,
mysterious.

I don't think she had any enemy.

Who could do that to her?

We had Tony's statement
that Karen was going to have

a party and that she was
going to have friends over.

That was a lead that we wanted to jump on.

We canvassed Karen's
neighborhood for video

surveillance to determine
who was in her driveway.

Fortunately, there was a Ring camera
positioned perfectly on that street.

Ring is a cloud-based video surveillance
company.

And what that means is
that the servers at Ring hold

video footage captured
on the user's Ring camera.

So we were able to retrieve video
surveillance from this particular residence.

But this camera was motion activated and
the sensitivity was set pretty low.

So that poses a challenge, um,
because with continuous recording,

you're able to see everything 24-7.

Whereas with individual
motion clips, it's just

when that particular
device detects motion.

What we're looking for was movement around
Karen's house.

On September 8th, at 1458 hours,
her driveway was completely empty.

And then the next motion-activated event,
at 1512 hours...

There was a gray car parked at Karen's
driveway.

And it matched the same type of make and
model that Tony had described his car to be.

So we know that between these two
motion-activated events, one at 1458 and

the other at 1512, that he arrived
sometime between that.

He stays there until 1533 hours.

So that did sync up with his story.

Tony's statement that
Karen was going to have a

party and that she was
going to have friends over.

We subsequently looked through all of the
other motion-activated events.

There wasn't any activity.

Uh, there wasn't anybody parked in her
driveway, aside from Tony.

That whole day.

Something's not adding up.

Just down the street, a relatively short
distance from Karen's driveway...

...was video surveillance opposite Tony's
house.

Fortunately, that footage was the ideal
footage that we all look for.

Continuous, HD, and captures the street
perfectly.

He saw Karen driving, um, with someone in
her passenger seat.

We wanted to see who was with her at that
time.

And this camera was clear enough that we
would be able to see who was in the car.

Was she being held hostage in the car?

Um, was she in fear of her life?

We didn't see her car.

We went even further, you know,
a couple hours after he said it.

Maybe he got his times mixed up.

And we went through the whole night and
did not see the car that he described.

It is the only way, um, in and out of her
neighborhood, uh, this particular street.

So, there was only
one way that she would

be able to go the
direction that he claimed.

I went back to the
police department and the

detectives and I looked
through it together for hours.

We had a lot of questions.

If Tony could have been mistaken,
um, if Tony was intentionally lying to us.

Since we weren't able to confirm that
Karen had passed by Adele and Tony's house

at 5pm, it points back
to the last time anyone

saw her alive was
Tony at Karen's house.

And so that right away was a red flag.

I had to take a step back and think to
myself, okay, this is a five foot tall,

90-year-old man.

Is he capable of inflicting that kind of
an injury to his stepdaughter?

I mean, could he physically do that?

And then right at that moment,
when we're trying to determine when he

arrived and when he left, that's when we
received an email from Fitbit.

And you could hear a pin drop.

Fitbit was able to provide us with a
number of different categories of data.

One of which was for step count or
movement.

Another had to deal with heart rate.

There was also information related to
sleep patterns.

The heart rate was the highest priority
for us.

We were all waiting just with bated
breath.

Like, okay, when was it?

When did her heart actually stop?

There was a progressive
increase in Karen's heart rate

up until approximately
3.20, the afternoon of the 8th.

Almost immediately after 3.20, there
was a steep drop-off of her heart rate.

It went down significantly.

Until finally, the device did not record
any data after 3.23.

So we understood based
on the numbers that we were

seeing, Karen basically
died within that window.

And that's when I raced back and played the
video of when Tony was at Karen's house.

We know that he arrived sometime between
14.58 hours and 15.12 hours.

Her heart stopped at 15.23.

Tony's car was still in the driveway at
15.33.

It was at that moment
that the Fitbit data and the

video surveillance data
just combined told this story.

Tony was in the house when Karen died.

Sir, San Jose Police, come over here.

Oh, you betcha.

So given the circumstances, we applied for
a warrant to arrest Tony.

Hi.

Come over here.

What's going on?

Let me see your keys.

Turn around.

Turn around.

Turn around.

Wait, wait, wait.

What did I say?

Honestly, when we pieced all this
together, I was kind of in shock.

But I'm like, look, this is just all
winding up.

I mean, we are following the evidence.

And the evidence has taken us this
direction.

Is this yet?

I don't know.

Tony was escorted into one of our interview
rooms where he awaited our arrival.

The ultimate goal was to get Tony to tell
us the truth.

We really wanted to get answers for Karen.

It was important for me to go to Karen's
funeral.

It was very difficult.

The whole time I was crying.

I wanted to say something, but I didn't
find words.

I was just in awe that people have so many
good words to say about her.

We all get a rose and put it down to the
grave for Karen.

And we say goodbye to her.

I think it helped us to know that,
you know, despite how she passed away,

she's always with us.

Have you ever heard of Miranda?

Miranda rights?

Yeah.

Okay.

I have never interviewed someone that old
on a brutal homicide case.

It felt like I was talking to my
grandfather.

We were planning to basically show him all
the evidence we had.

So that he understood that he was not
going to have any way out of this.

When we found Karen, Karen was wearing
what's called a Fitbit.

What's that?

Do you know what a Fitbit is?

Okay.

I recall taking the time to explain to Tony
what a Fitbit was and what it was good for.

We had it analyzed for any movement that
occurred.

I will tell you this, that the movement
stopped on the 8th of September,

that same day that you went over to visit
her.

Mm-hmm.

Okay.

I'll also tell you that the heart rate
monitor indicated when she passed.

Oh.

The heart rate monitor indicated she
passed at 328.

And I was there at 328?

You were there at 328.

We need to know what happened.

What can I tell you?

I have no way to tell you anything.

If I was there that long, I don't
remember.

That's it.

I have no answer.

You don't have an answer?

No.

What would I have an answer?

At one point, we took a break.

Tony started doing exercises like Jack
LaLanne.

He was obviously still a Fitbit man.

I started to realize that he
physically was definitely, he

was definitely capable of
committing this brutal homicide.

While we're interviewing
him, the crime scene is

serving a search warrant
over at Adele and Tony's house.

The crime scene investigators are updating
us as to what evidence they're finding.

They found an axe, like a small axe and a
large butcher meat cleaver.

They also found some blood on the sink
that had been washed away.

They found some blood on a couple of
shirts.

And then they found blood
on a camo raincoat that

was found inside a shed
at Tony and Adele's house.

They found a shirt real
similar to the one that you're

wearing now, except it doesn't
have as many stripes in it.

It's got blood all over the front of it.

It's this one here.

No.

Yeah, that's your shirt in your house.

They already tested it.

Yeah, they already tested it and they said
that it came back as blood.

How did that get there?

Tony, that's your shirt.

It's the same t-shirt that I can see
peeking out over the top of your...

I have no idea.

That's our blood?

My blood or what?

That is blood.

It's blood on a lot of shirts.

Whose blood is it?

That's what we're going to find out.

So here's why I'm asking you a very
important question.

A lot of times... A lot of times I
get caught and chopped and all that.

Finding articles of
clothing with blood on them

is not necessarily
abnormal inside a house.

I understand that if someone cuts
themselves, that there may be a smear of

blood on their shirt or something of that
nature.

But there are different types of blood
spatter that if you've seen them many,

many times before, they're instantaneously
recognizable.

And that's what I was told was found on
some of these shirts.

Tony tried to explain that he had cut
himself.

But we actually looked at Tony physically.

We looked at basically his entire body.

And we found no indications of fresh cuts.

No indications of healing cuts.

So his statement didn't make sense.

During a portion of the interview where
Sergeant Montanay and I stepped out,

one of our younger detectives had let me
know, hey, he's talking to himself.

He

was kind of mumbling to himself.

And then Tony made a major error.

It can be.

I'm hearing that rainbow out.

One of our

crime scene investigators
had found this jacket tucked

away inside a shed outside
the back of the house.

Looking at the blood spatter
on this jacket, it was pretty

clear cut that that was the
jacket that Tony was referring to.

I just felt like we were done.

I'm like, we're done.

He's not admitting it
to Brian and I, but he's

admitting it to himself
and he doesn't even know it.

It can be.

It can be.

It can be.

It can be.

Upon review of the evidence at that point,
there was sufficient evidence to charge

Tony Aiello with the murder of Karen
Navarra.

After Tony pleaded not guilty, we knew that
Tony wasn't going to tell us the truth.

As a homicide investigator, there's two
questions I want to know.

I want to know why you did it.

And I want to know who you are.

In Tony's instance, we couldn't find
anything.

He had never been fingerprinted before.

Tony claimed that he was sent to Korea
during the Korean conflict.

But the United States Army did not have
any fingerprints for Mr. Aiello.

So I had some serious concerns about
Tony's true identity or his lack thereof.

When we searched Tony and Adele's house,
we found some interesting notations.

It was obvious there was
some concern about the

transfer of estates in the
event someone passed.

Tony was being denied for loans.

And we believed that he was kind of short
on money.

There was a life insurance
policy Adele would

have had received
through the death of Karen.

I can only imagine or guess that maybe he
wanted some of that.

And that possibly could have been his
motive for committing this homicide.

At one point, the DNA results from the
Santa Clara Crime Lab did come in.

It was established that Karen's blood was
found on the front of that jacket.

We knew who our killer was.

We knew that it was Tony.

We brought the case to grand jury.

A grand jury is similar to a trial jury,
except there are more jurors.

And they are making a
probable cause finding

rather than a finding
beyond a reasonable doubt.

In this case, the grand
jury did find that there was

probable cause that Tony
Aiello murdered Karen Navarra.

The evidence showed
that Tony Aiello went to

Karen Navarra's house
around 3pm on September 8th.

He did so under the guise of bringing her
pizza, but he brought with him a weapon.

He put Karen Navarra at ease.

She trusted him.

And he took her by surprise.

After he committed the crime, he slit her
throat after she was dead.

He placed a knife in her hand to make it
look like a suicide.

The scene was also staged as a burglary.

And he left.

He left her there to
wait for five days until

she was ultimately
discovered by a co-worker.

What Tony didn't anticipate is that there
was a digital witness.

Unfortunately, we were unable to bring
Tony Aiello to trial.

Tony Aiello passed away on September 10th,
2019.

Prior to the full adjudication of his
case.

I've done video surveillance for over a
hundred different homicide cases.

And this one sticks out just because of
the convergence of technology.

Data doesn't lie.

People do.

I want Karen to be remembered as the
person with a big heart, a brilliant mind,

a very strong and determined person.

And I also wish that I
tell her enough that how

much I appreciate her
when she was there with me.

Karen death have affected me emotionally a
lot.

What happened, I never have dreamt in my
wildest dreams.

She was and she will be in my heart and in
my memories, always and always.
