It was January 7, 2015.

I got a call from the elementary school.

The teacher told me that Erica hasn't
picked up Amir from school.

It was strange.

She was a great mom.

She would never walk off and leave her
kids.

I just knew something was going on.

Family members of 26-year-old Erica
Crippen are overcome with worry and grief.

She's been missing since December 30th.

I was feeling pressure.

This was finding a young mother,
two little girls.

When we looked in the glove box, I knew
immediately that we were on to something big.

That device was tracking them everywhere
they went.

And that could prove to be huge for this
investigation.

I love looking at pictures of her.

I get like a rush of memories every time I
look at her.

And they're all funny.

What stood out about Erica's personality,
she was like a whole vibe.

Everything about her, she's super funny.

Exaggerates everything which I loved.

She's just a whole vibe.

Erica's a whole vibe.

This day was great.

We hadn't seen each other in a little bit.

And we had plenty of shots.

And it was a great night.

Erica loves social media.

I'm telling you, everything she did,
you would know where Erica at.

Because she posts everything on social
media.

She posted from the time she got up in the
morning to the time she went to bed.

Erica loved being a mom.

She really did.

Her and Amir, they had a really,
really close relationship.

Amir was her princess.

Erica and Amir's dad,
they were together for a

few years, and then they
wound up breaking up.

Erica was a home health aide for hospice.

While she was doing that, she was going to
school to become a doctor.

Erica was a very hard worker.

Erica wanted to know people that had
dreams in life, and they were going places.

That's what made her fall in love with
Kyle.

Erica first met Kyle Crosby in high
school.

They reconnected on Facebook.

She had posted something on there.

You know, he reached out to her.

Aw, you're so sweet.

Erica, Saul, and Kyle, he was going
places.

Her ambition and his ambition,
they were like on the same level.

Like, he matches her fly.

You know, she wanted a nice car,
he's driving a nice car.

He got a good job.

She just felt way over heels for Kyle.

Like, she just went full force with him.

Like, he really swept her off her feet.

In April 2014, the family had a huge
surprise.

Erica, now it's Erica Crippen Crosby.

It all played out on Facebook.

Within the two years, it was like,
boom.

I was like, oh my God, you really got
married, Erica?

Congratulations.

For once, I saw a difference in her.

Like, she really was happy with Kyle.

She really was.

Erica's mom, she passed away when Erica
was 13.

Me and my sister, Barbara, raised Erica.

We basically shared the responsibility of
her upbringing.

Because she really didn't have anybody.

I grew to love her like she was my own
daughter.

Next thing you know, Erica and Kyle posted
a picture on Facebook.

Life was in overdrive now.

I thought Kyle was going to be a great
dad.

Because he was an awesome dad with Amir.

Kyle, he treated Amir as his own.

Amir was his princess.

Next thing you know, I'm looking on
Facebook.

He moved into this new apartment.

So I'm like, oh my God, okay, this is
great.

You're going to be down the street.

I can come see the kids and you can come
over and hang out.

With me all the time.

Erica was in a point in her life where she
was really happy.

She had a husband, a beautiful new child,
sibling for Amira.

They had a beautiful apartment.

They lived very well.

They were both making money.

She was going to school.

They had a very promising future together.

You know, she's living a dream.

Like, everything that she wants in life is
coming together.

I got a call from the elementary school.

The teacher told me that Erica hasn't
picked up Amir from school.

It was strange.

I was like, this is not like her.

Erica is an amazing mother.

She would never forget to pick up her
daughter from school.

You know, there's something wrong.

I called my sister Barbara.

I told her what was going on.

I said meet me at Erica's house.

When I arrived, it was like three or four
police cars.

When I saw what was in that apartment,
my heart dropped.

We got fast food on the table.

We got broken glass in the corner.

The baby swing bent upside down.

It was like some...like...like a tornado
went through there.

I couldn't believe my eyes.

I knew at this point something really bad
happened.

Kyle didn't even look like Kyle.

Kyle always dressed nice.

You could tell he didn't shave in a couple
of days.

He was high.

At this point, the officer put him in the
backseat.

And he drove off.

Amir's father was called to come pick her
up.

Kyle called his mother.

And she came and picked up the baby.

I was like, this can't be happening.

This is crazy.

What is going on?

Like, where is she?

I was at work and we got
a call that the Mount Laurel

Police Department had a
missing person investigation.

And they requested assistance.

Police invited Kyle down to the police
station to give a statement.

Kyle appeared to be under the influence.

Kyle told them that he was taking
Percocet, the prescription pain medication.

Kyle had told police that he hadn't seen
Erica since New Year's Eve.

And we were January 7th at this point,
so this was seven days later.

Kyle told police that he and Erica went to
one of the local restaurants.

And that was on December 30th of 2014.

The next day on New Year's Eve, he
and Erica wanted to go out for the night.

But they had babysitting issues.

So he volunteered to stay
home and watch the children

while Erica went out with
her friends to celebrate.

Her car was still on location at Kyle and
Erica's house.

Kyle said that Erica was actually picked
up by her friends on New Year's Eve.

He was sure to tell all of us that Erica
has done this before.

That she has left him before for days on
end and would come back.

After that first interview with Kyle,
he was free to go.

The next thing we had to do as
investigators was to talk to her family.

We had to talk to her friends.

It became clear to us immediately that
Erica was a great mother.

Erica was very attentive to her children.

And for her to not be
around for seven days with no

contact, they knew something
was very, very wrong.

According to Erica's
family, she would constantly

update her Facebook
with pictures and posts.

Often times we would
look at their social

media life and do a
pattern of life analysis.

So see what kind of
things they do to try and

identify the last time
that they might be active.

Information gleaned from a victim's social
media profile can be as important to us as

a physical piece of evidence that we may
find in a crime scene.

The Facebook update was a picture of Erica
and Kyle at a restaurant on December 30th.

And this was in line
with Kyle's story that they

went to PJ Wellerhands
on that night together.

If there's a story to be told
in one single photograph,

it's not that there was a
problem with their relationship.

It was that they were happy.

The fact that Erica was prolific.

Her social media account was constantly
being updated.

It was extremely
concerning that after the

30th, there was no other
aspect on her online.

If she did run away, she would still be on
it and active.

And it was concerning that she was not.

One of the first things
you do in an investigation

like this is canvas
the neighborhood.

Officers were sent to Kyle and Erica's
neighborhood and they knocked on every

door and they talked to everybody that they
could talk to out there and came up empty.

No information.

Along with checking Erica's social media
accounts, we also started checking Kyle's.

On December 30th, Kyle had uploaded a
photo of he and Erica.

They were happy.

You couldn't tell by the photograph that
anything was wrong.

What did stick out was that Kyle had made
a post on Facebook on January 3rd that he

was looking for a babysitter for the
girls.

It supported what he told us
early on, which was that Erica

left on New Year's Eve and
that he hasn't seen her since.

At this point, my sister and I were scared
to death.

I cannot believe this is happening.

Like, where is she?

Erica would never leave her children.

I couldn't put my
fingers on exactly what

happened, but I know
something bad happened.

So next, I contacted the cell phone
company and asked them if they could help

us try to find the last location of
Erica's phone.

So we were provided with a set of
coordinates from the cell phone carrier.

We entered them into Google Maps and we
came up with a location.

Echelon Road in Camden County,
New Jersey.

It was a cluster of apartment buildings
and more concerning was we noticed a body

of water that appeared to be right within
that area.

You still hold on to
hope that Erica is going

to pop up any second
and walk through the door.

But then there's the other side where
you've been doing this long enough and you

recognize that we could be dealing with
the worst case scenario.

I go out to Echelon Road.

As I was going to the location,
if there was anything in this case up to

that point that I felt was a possibility
that she was there, this was it.

There were a lot of residences,
a lot of apartment buildings.

This isn't necessarily a place that you
would go if you were to dispose of a body.

So I can remember almost a sigh of relief
looking at the water and seeing that there

was about a two inch thick layer of ice
over the entire surface of the water.

So that brought immediate comfort to me
that Erica is not in this body of water.

But also, I remember a feeling of almost
being deflated like, now what?

Family members of 26-year-old Erica
Crippen are overcome with worry and grief.

Tonight, they gathered outside her Mount
Laurel apartment.

She's been missing since December 30th.

Seeing Erica's name
in the news and her face

plastered everywhere,
it just felt unreal.

Like, it was like, this is not happening.

Like, this can't be happening.

I hear nothing from Erica, no happy new
year, no nothing.

It's not like her.

I thought I was outside my own body,
looking at stuff.

Family members say Erica's last
Facebook post was December 30th,

stating she was on a date with
her husband and Cherry Hill.

I still have faith that she was out there,
so I didn't want to look at it.

Police arrived at Erica
and Kyle's apartment and

immediately realized that
Erica's red Fort Taurus is gone.

And Kyle Crosby was nowhere to be found.

That's when it hit home that something's
very wrong here.

We recognized at this point that our
answers lie with Kyle.

So we had to start talking to Kyle's
family, Kyle's friends, to see if they

knew where Kyle was at this point and
actually what was going on.

So we interviewed his mother, Joe Crosby.

Joe Crosby was very forthcoming,
very easy to talk to.

She had no issues helping us along,
and she told us that she hadn't really

talked to Kyle since about January 2nd,
which was seven days ago.

She was concerned.

This was her son, and he was now missing
also.

I reached out to her, and I'm like,
Joe, like, do you know anything?

And she said no.

I was like, come on now, Joe, you know
something happened.

Like, do you know what's going on?

She said to me, maybe they ran off into a
Romeo and Juliet.

That stunned me when she said that.

So, at this point, I come up with an idea.

Erica had this app on her phone that'll
help you find the phone if it's lost.

It tells me Erica's phone
is at a dumpster in a

hotel next to a Wawa on
Mount Ephraim, New Jersey.

So I drove there.

Inside the dumpster, it was empty.

The phone wasn't there.

So I decided to go into the Wawa, and I
said, can I please speak to your manager?

So the manager comes out, and I said,
I need to see your video.

She said, for what?

I said, well, it's a young lady that's
missing and has two daughters.

So she said, oh, come on back.

There was no Erica, but there was Kyle and
the two kids.

The aunt told me that Erica's phone is in
this area, but there's no Erica.

It's Kyle.

He's hiding something.

I immediately got the tape and took it to
the detectives.

Barbara came to us and told us that she
had information that Kyle was at one of

the local convenience
stores on camera with

the children shortly
after Erica disappeared.

I've been a homicide detective for almost
10 years, and it's rare that I've ever

experienced a family
as involved in looking for

their missing loved one
as Erica's family was.

And I really have a lot of respect,
and I'll never forget that grit and that

tenacity that they showed in trying to
find Erica.

Now we're hunting for Kyle because he's
the only one that's going to be able to

get us to where we
need to be, which is any

sort of answer as to
what happened with Erica.

We decided that because of the condition
of the house, that we would charge Kyle

with two counts of endangering the welfare
of a child.

But we still didn't have any idea where
Kyle was.

Finding Kyle Crosby was our number one
priority.

Kyle's father contacted me and said,
hey, Kyle called us this morning.

He gave us a phone number that he called
them from.

They didn't recognize
the phone number, but it

came back to a convenience
store in Maryland.

So we finally had a sniff of where he was.

We were advised
that the license plate on

Erica's car hit the
Francis Scott Key bridge.

The automated license plate
reader on that bridge confirmed

that that car had moved from
New Jersey down to Maryland.

An off-duty police officer
noticed the vehicle that

matched the description of
Erica's car with Kyle in it.

Kyle was arrested on January 12th.

Later that evening, I received a phone
call that Kyle was in custody.

The mix of emotions at that point,
I don't think I'll ever forget.

But the overall sense of us being done,
we hadn't even started yet.

While we're very
confident that Kyle was

responsible, we still
didn't have Erica's body.

People constantly leave behind a digital
trail.

And that digital trail was going to be key
for us solving this investigation.

We got a search warrant for all of Kyle's
cell phone records.

Erica's car was seized as evidence.

It was a crime scene.

In the trunk of Erica's car, the forensic
team found a shovel with what appeared to

be sand on it, duct tape, linen, and
multiple wrappers of used air fresheners.

The sinking feeling that I just will
always recall is that I suspected that

Kyle had used Erica's car to dispose of
her body.

And then we looked in the glove box.

And what we found
there had the potential to

change the course of
this entire investigation.

There was a very old portable navigation
device.

It was a device that you
would plug into a cigarette

lighter that could get you
from point A to point B.

I knew immediately that we were onto
something big.

We have Kyle's cell phone.

We have cell phone records.

And we now have a digital
device that potentially tracked

the movements of Kyle in the
days that we couldn't find him.

We now have all the evidence
that we need to either show

that Kyle killed Erica or
to clear him from this crime.

This GPS device was immediately seized as
evidence.

It was going to be examined forensically.

But we also knew it was going to take some
time to get into that device, parse

through the information, and look at it in
a way that made sense.

If it made sense.

So one of my tasks was to analyze Kyle's
cell phone.

The cell phone software we use allows us
to extract some deleted communication.

And we were able to
show that there was deleted

communication between
Kyle and his mother, Joe.

The messages themselves were disturbing,
to say the least.

They painted a picture of the early
morning hours of December 31st,

which was New Year's Eve,
where Kyle was actually, real

time, having a fight with
Erica and texting his mom.

At 3.20 in the morning, Joe texts Kyle.

Thirteen minutes later, Kyle replied,

That was very concerning.

In our first conversation
with Joe Crosby, she indicated

that she did not recall talking
to Kyle during that time.

And now we're finding out that there was a
text message conversation.

We contacted the cell phone carrier and
requested her call detail records.

Joe Crosby's cell phone pinged the tower
right up the street from Kyle's residence

on the early morning hours of December
31st, 2014.

Right around 7am.

So Joe Crosby's cell phone,
and presumably Joe Crosby, had

been in very close proximity
to Kyle and Erica's house.

This was only hours after Erica went
missing.

Confronting Joe with this information was
eye-opening.

She advised us that she
had recently deleted a

number of text messages
between her and her son Kyle.

When asked why exactly she would do that
when we were in the middle of an

investigation of this magnitude,
she advised us that she figured that we

already had those messages and that we
wouldn't need them from her phone.

She told us that she did go
to the house the next morning,

and that was to babysit the
girls while Kyle ran errands.

In light of the new evidence with Joe
Crosby, she was charged criminally with

hindering apprehension and tampering with
evidence.

Mr. Crosby, you want to say anything?

Only Fox 29 was there
when 67-year-old Joe Crosby

returned to her Sicklerville
home Monday night.

After being arrested Monday
morning, on charges she helped

her son Kyle conceal the
murder of his wife, Erica Crippen.

28-year-old Kyle Crosby

He's charged with the
murder of his wife, 26-year-old

Erica Crippen, missing
since New Year's Eve.

When I heard that Kyle was being charged
with murder, I was sick to my stomach.

I meant...

It's a feeling I don't want nobody to
feel.

It was like I was outside of my body.

I was devastated.

It's very traumatizing.

He took my heart up out of my chest and just
thumped with it and just played with it.

Like, you took her away from us.

Like, that's so uncalled for.

You know, like, you just
not only took her away

from me, you took her
away from her daughter.

Not in a million years would you ever
think that your husband will kill you.

And so, losing her in
this way was the biggest

trauma I ever had to
go through in my life.

Prosecuting somebody for murder without a
body is rare.

We needed to find Erica's body.

And we knew that our
best chance of doing that

was by unlocking this
data in this GPS device.

All I wanted was her body.

I want to close her at this point.

So, I started organizing searches.

I met up with the family and friends of
Erica Crippen this morning.

We went deep into the woods and looked
around.

While I was back there, I spoke to Barbara
Kellum.

Well, it's been over a month now.

You know, we can only expect the worst as
our family.

So, what we want is her body.

We were searching for Erica's body every
day.

We had no days off.

I quit my job for the search.

We had a mission.

We had to find Erica.

It was really hard because we want to find
her.

We want her to come home.

We want to give her a proper burial.

But imagine being the person to actually
find her.

You know, to be in her
best friend, her aunt, and go

in the woods and uncover
something and find her body.

It was the scariest thing ever.

So, with our theory that Kyle used Erica's
car to leave the area, to dispose of her

body, that GPS system that
we found in that car was going

to hold the key to hopefully
telling us where Kyle went.

I was tasked with reviewing the extraction
of the GPS.

This could have so much information that
could help us identify exactly where Kyle

was in that vehicle, which in hope would
identify the location of Erica's body.

This GPS system, it's actually leaving a
digital breadcrumb every few hundred feet.

really lay out almost exactly the course
that that GPS system has taken.

A complete record of everywhere that it's
been.

This was incredible news for us.

But there was a downside.

As we moved through and started to really
study this information, we realized that

there were over 8,500 digital breadcrumbs
that were contained within this device.

They spanned a distance of more than a
couple of hundred miles.

Any one of those digital breadcrumbs actually
could have been where Erica's body was.

Detective Dave Kohler,
he was tasked with

going through each one
of those breadcrumbs.

We use Google Maps as well as Google
Street View to identify each one of these

locations, whether it be driving down the
road and pinging off a highway,

or a motel, a shopping mall, or a
restaurant.

We went through every single
one of these GPS locations

to try and identify the
location of Erica's body.

Over 8,500 locations where Kyle
essentially drove, it could have been him

getting something to eat, maybe pulling
over to sleep.

The possibilities were endless.

This particular device only
stores three days of information,

so anything prior to that
had already been overwritten.

Detective Kohler was
able to provide us with some

early-on information
that helped us get started.

He was able to give us two
pre-programmed locations in that

GPS, meaning that these
were input or saved by the user.

We were able to plug those
coordinates into Google Earth,

and we were able to get a
street view of the location.

One of the locations was a quiet rural
spot in the middle of Maryland.

We saw railroad tracks.

Not far from that was what turned out to
be a concrete plant.

So to us, that suggested that Kyle was
looking for places to discard Erica's body.

We needed to find her body to give us the
best chance of getting a conviction.

I was feeling pressure, not from the
family, but for the family.

I wanted to find wherever she was and get
those answers for the family.

And for me personally, that was the
driving force at this point.

After about a two-hour drive, I arrived at
the first location in Maryland.

The train tracks at Sparrows Point.

It was overgrown just like this.

There were old railroad tracks that were
coming through here.

This is a little pocket in the middle of a
very busy area.

That certainly offers some seclusion.

But is this a place where he would
necessarily put her body?

I don't think so.

I mean, you can hear industry in the
background.

We're hundreds of feet from a major
highway, trucks driving by.

Although this looks desolate when you look
around, it's busy.

We looked around for any clues that he was
here.

Discarded trash, any sign of any sort of
activity.

Also, it was cold,
it was frigid, it was

January, but you still
had your sense of smell.

And unfortunately, you
had to rely on that sense

of smell sometimes to
smell for decomposition.

But we were confident, having checked this
out, that Erica was not here.

The second location, it was right around
two miles, this concrete plant.

Right over this way, you can see the
buildings, and beyond that are these large

mounds that you can actually see on the
satellite pictures.

So we were afraid that this would be a
good spot to dispose of a body.

But we were happy to see, if that's the
right word, that it's a highly secure area.

There's a security checkpoint.

We talked to the guard,
and we were advised

that that guard booth
is manned 24 hours.

So there was no access to this area.

If there was, license plates
were recorded, and we were able

to look through that, and
Erica's car was not registered.

So we felt satisfied seeing
how secure it was that Kyle

did not bring Erica down
here to dispose of her body.

I knew we were on the right path.

I just kept waiting for this aha moment.

I made a decision that the best course of
action was to try and identify where the

vehicle stops for more than 10 minutes at
a time.

In the thought process that
it would take several minutes

to remove a body from a
vehicle and dispose of it.

There was an area where
Kyle's car stopped for five

minutes one night, and two
days later for 14 minutes.

And that was really concerning as to what
was going on in that location.

Kyle stopped on the side of a country road
in Carroll County, rural Maryland.

In reviewing Google Maps, it was a small
area where a vehicle could be parked.

It's wooded with tree line.

We looked at that as a possible location
that a body could be disposed of.

As I was coming to
this location, there was

a lot of feelings going
on driving down here.

I was cautiously optimistic that this
could be the place.

This was a really big moment for me.

The emotion will come later.

You're kind of in the
moment, and you're

doing what you need
to do to get the job done.

The search team came down to this area,
started looking through the tree line,

and found Erica only yards off of the
road.

The body was very well preserved.

The body was wrapped in a blanket.

The ankles, wrists and neck were tied with
extension cord.

And there was duct tape around the mouth
and around the nose.

And the body was
covered with some brush,

branches, and leaves
in an effort to conceal it.

You feel like you should be happy.

But then the horror hits
you that, in fact, what you

had thought about all these
weeks had just come true.

That Erica had been
murdered, and her family

would never get a
chance to see her again.

We wanted to be
absolutely sure that we were

able to secure a conviction
for Erica's family.

After weeks of not knowing what happened
to Erica Crippen, grief-stricken family

members got the news today that
investigators found Crippen's body.

Crippen's body was found off this rural
road in Sykesville, Carroll County,

Maryland.

I mean, that's what makes you an animal.

That's your wife, your daughter's mother.

And to leave her laying on the side of the
road like an animal, roadkill,

says a lot about you.

When I got the call, the
good news was they found her,

and the bad news is that,
you know, she's deceased.

It was a good thing, but a bad thing.

I was grateful that they put the work in
and they found her.

But I was also, I was broken.

Knowing that she's not, you're never going
to see her again.

Like, you'll never ever see her again.

And they wanted us to, you know, go, you
know, I didn't want to see her like that.

I wanted to remember her the way I
remembered her.

But I was also grateful that they found
her because I had that closure.

I didn't want her to be like out there,
not knowing where she is.

I was devastated.

I was... I didn't know how to feel.

It was really hard.

But at the same time, as
weird as this may sound, it

was a relief to know that
we could say goodbye to her.

Because of the strength of the case,
because of all the work that went into it,

and because of the evidence that was
uncovered, Kyle pled guilty to one count

of aggravated manslaughter and one count
of hindering apprehension.

The two counts of endangering the welfare
of a child were dropped.

In light of Kyle Crosby's
plea agreement, the

charges against his mother,
Joe Crosby, were dropped.

Even though Kyle never told us what
happened, using the evidence that we had

accumulated during the
course of this investigation,

we were able to put together
what happened that night.

The night before New Year's Eve,
Kyle and Erica went out to one of the

local restaurants and seemingly had a
normal, nice time out.

We believe that when they got home,
something happened in the middle of the

night where Kyle and Erica were in an
argument.

I don't know why, but these
arguments led to the point where

Kyle felt the need to actually
reach out for his mother.

And that argument ended by Kyle taking
Erica's life by means of asphyxiation.

It then became his priority to get rid of
Erica's body and avoid detection.

Kyle traveled to
various places in an effort

to try to find a spot
to dump Erica's body.

Where would we be if we didn't have any of
this digital information?

If there were no digital breadcrumbs,
I don't know how we would wind up in a

small rural town in the middle of
Maryland.

In this case, those digital clues were
absolutely everything.

On March 10th, 2016, Kyle Crosby was
sentenced to 28 years for aggravated

manslaughter and three years for the
hindering apprehension.

You know, I'm sorry for my actions.

I miss Erica, my wife, terribly.

And not only do I love my wife and our
children, but her family as well as mine.

Hopefully one day you will find that in
your hearts to forgive me.

When I look at that footage of Kyle in
court apologizing for killing Erica,

I hope for Erica's sake that he was
sincere in that.

But I can't help but to
wonder if some of that

emotion was Kyle just
being upset for himself.

That's her right there.

That's me right behind her.

Looking back at these
pictures, it's so awesome to be

able to have them and see
her smile and dance and laugh.

But it's painful at the same time.

This is all we have left.

I look on her page all the time.

She was so happy.

She was so happy.

It's very hard for me to watch these kids
grow without Erica around.

The baby will never know how amazing her
mom was.

And the fact that when they get married,
Erica's not there due to hair.

You know, it's just the little things that
Erica loved doing.

But her girls, they won't have that.

And that's the hardest thing.

Mira, the older one.

She remembers a lot.

More and more, she looking like her every
single day.

Laugh like her.

I mean, it's like having Erica back in the
house.
