and she's injured,

we run into a young couple,

and the young couple bring us
to this town.

Melissa McBride: This location
we are in is northeast of
Madrid,

in a region called Segovia.

And within that region
is Sepúlveda.

Sepúlveda was one of the
first places that we came to,

and we fell in love
with this town.

It has a lot of heart.
It has a lot of soul.

It has sort of an earthy warmth
to it,

and you really feel like
you're in Spain.

Daniel Percival:
Part of the reason we chose it

is because this town
already exists as a community.

A lot of our extras
are from the community.

And the great thing is
we're able to use that

and help make our world
as believable as possible.

Melissa McBride: It's such a
beautiful location and just
perfect for the scenes.

David Zabel: One of the things
that we really were excited
about

was the idea of investigating

how our show could echo
spaghetti Westerns.

I, from the very beginning,
was looking at

the Man With No Name movies,

the Clint Eastwood movies
that he did with Sergio Leone.

Jason Richman:
That was one of the things

that attracted us to Spain, to
give it a really different feel

than when we were in France.

Daryl and Carol are,

for all intents and purposes,
people with no name.

They come from a faraway place.

Nobody knows anything
about them.

They don't know anything about
the town they're walking into.

And that sort of is a classic
makeup of a Sergio Leone movie.

Welcome to Solaz del Mar.

Man, I don't get it.
What's so bad about this place?

They won't let us
be together.

David Zabel: We really wanted to
explore this season

love in the apocalypse.

The idea was to have a story

that was provoked
by some kind of pure love

that's trying to exist
in a very dark world.

That's what Roberto and Justina
represent to Carol

when she sees them
at the top of Episode 2.

Daniel Percival:
Forbidden love is a theme

that runs through
this story line,

not just Roberto and Justina,

where the two families
are trying to keep them apart,

for reasons we will discover
later in the show.

And there's a love story
between Paz and Elena,

which is also forbidden love.

Elena has to hide her love
for Paz

from her husband, Guillermo.

Alexandra Masangkay:
Having the chance to develop

this relationship between Paz
and Elena was beautiful.

And also,
working with Dan about it,

he was really sensitive with the
relationship of both characters.

Big action scenes, big zombie
scenes are great fun to shoot,

but what I really love
is shooting two people

in a room together, too afraid
to say they love each other.

I just remember looking at him

and getting so emotional
about it.

Once a year, they visit
the northern villages,

bringing gifts,
offering protection.

Norman Reedus: In our story,
Carol and I get sort of
wrapped up

in this sort of underlying drama
of what unfolds here

to keep this place alive.

"La Ofrenda" means
"the offering,"

and it refers to this event

where the last vestiges of
Spanish royalty come to the town

and offer gifts
in exchange for a girl.

Melissa McBride: These
traditions have been around for
a long time,

but may also be exacerbated
by the situation

that they're in now,
that resources are low

and they have to do what they
have to do in order to survive.

Your town is beautiful.

But some of your traditions
are a bit surprising.

This is their system, which is
sort of corrupt in our eyes.

And it becomes clear
that that's the thing

that Roberto and Justina
are running from

when Daryl and Carol force them
to come back to the village.

Obviously they're a couple
in love,

and the threat is
that Justina may be chosen.

Man:

Norman Reedus: Today we're
filming a pig race.

It's a raffle
which sort of makes decisions

amongst the town.

What an interesting way
to have a lottery --

whichever little piglet
comes in first.

Alexandra Masangkay: These are
our pigs. They are all females.

And I've been with them
like for two days now.

Beautiful.

You can be taking the pigs --
We've made friends.

Yeah. Exactly.
'Cause I know you like that.

So you can be getting
the pigs over.
Okay. Great.

Daniel Percival:
For weeks and weeks now,

we've been training piglets
to race.

Pigs are not normally
a trainable animal.

They have bags of individuality

and bags of personality,
and they will do what they do.

But they havebeen training,
they've been doing very well,

and I'm very proud of them.
