in london,

7 am in philadelphia.

And around the world,
it's time for live aid.

- The size of this,
the enormity of this,

Hadn't struck me.

♪ and here we go

- An industry that's
notoriously selfish

Did something for someone else.

♪ we're rockin'
all over the world ♪

- 32 million human beings

Dying of hunger in a world
of surplus food.

♪ and we're goin' today

♪ here we go

- I stepped back and said,
"he's barking mad."

- Wembley, will you please
welcome america to live aid day.

- I didn't know enough
that it was impossible.

- To be honest, it seemed
a hair-brained scheme.

It seemed like this
could never happen.

- We just packed a few
bangers into our set.

- I was singin'
my face off, honey.

♪ rockin' all over the world

- It was unique. It saved lives.

- It began a journey
for all of us,

From what you might call
charity,

To what you might call justice.

- Hyde park welcomes
the world to live aid.

♪ well it was twenty
years ago today ♪

(geldof): Charity will give you,

In the space of a week,

$120 million.

Politics, in the space
of one day,

Will give you billions.

- As I said to bob,

I'll do the politics,
you do the public.

- There's nothing more
compassionate than helping

People who were condemned
to death, live.

- You can't change the world
with a concept,

But you can plant a seed.

(crowd cheering)

- For all the defaults

Or the misplaced steps,
it worked.

(crowd cheering)

(train rumbling)

(crowd murmuring)

- At live aid,

Most of us just thought,
oh yeah, you know,

We've got the money,

You know, give it to the people
who don't have any,

And then the problems go away.

And of course, they don't.

(crowd cheering)

That was the journey from
charity to justice, right there.

We don't have to send
in our money.

We've just got to stop

Asking starving people

To give back the money
our governments lent them

Plus interest. That's kinda it.

(crowd cheering)

But the banks won't cancel
the debts

Unless the politicians
tell the banks to do that.

And the politicians
won't tell the banks

Unless we tell them to do that.

So, that's why I'm here.
Are you with me?

(crowd cheering)

Are you?!

Live aid raised 200 million,

Or something like that.

That's what the african
continent is paying

Every week in debt service.

- The knee on the neck
of the poor in africa was debt.

You're a small country.

You're producing
relatively little.

Everything you produce,
the money goes to pay

The richest countries
in the world.

- Shouldn't we be offering
these struggling economies

Across the world
a brand new start

By lifting that debt burden
from them?

(tense music)

(reporter 1): These rock stars
are part of an initiative

That aims to have the rich
nations of the world

Cancel third world debt.

It's ambitious,

But they have friends
in high places.

- This is mr. Bono,

Who is a singer,

And who has really supported
the campaign in a big way.

(reporter 2): The pope offered
his full support to the group,

Which included bob geldof.

- Bono and I

Are really good friends

And very close.

He wants to give the world
a great big hug,

And I want to punch
its lights out, you know?

(drummond): I had the fortune
of working with bob geldof

And bono.

We had a lot of momentum
on debt cancellation in 2000

And 2001, but we had
not completed the job.

- So, it's very easy for me
to time travel back

To the early 2000s

And what was happening

With hiv/aids on the continent
of africa,

Because it was about to undo
everything on debt cancellation.

(people murmuring)

We've witnessed it first-hand.

♪ I have run

♪ I have crawled

♪ I have scaled

You're looking around.
You think,

Oh god, you know,

A third of these people
are going to die.

(reporter 3): Two million people
died in africa

Last year from the aids virus.

36 million people worldwide
are infected

And 25 million,

Or 70 percent of those infected
live in africa.

- In my country,

We are running out of place
to bury people.

In urban centers, as a result

Of the number of people
that were dying

From hiv/aids.

- There had to be some
emergency response to that

By the world,
and we thought, well,

Should we try to start
an organization

And really take on
the aids thing?

(bono): Bob geldof comes up
with data as an acronym.

The three biggest challenges

To the continent of africa:

Debt, aids, and trade.

- I just thought, great,

We've now got this body
of actual developmental experts.

♪ the heart is a bloom

And bono, by this time,

He was a global mega superstar.
I wasn't.

♪ don't let it get away

♪ beautiful day

Frankly, you know, u2
dominated american rock'n'roll,

So just the sales alone
give you access.

♪ teach me love ♪

- I became aware of bono

And his, at the time,
it was called data organization,

A few months into
the, the bush presidency.

- They were asking for bono
to have a meeting

With condoleezza rice.

- Good morning.

- I said I would present it
to her.

I myself was a bit
skeptical about that.

- Jendayi frazer came in
and she said,

"bono, do you know
who that is?"

And I said, "uh, yes,
I'm a huge fan of u2.

I would love to meet bono."

I think she was
a little surprised.

- It was very weird for
the national security advisor

To meet a pop star.

Bono came talking
about the facts.

He came with a very
substantive policy agenda.

- My goal always was to know
more than the staff,

And bono, to his great credit,

Really took to that.

He was like, yeah, I'm going
to know more than them.

- I figured out quite quickly
that this was

A serious, serious man.

He wanted to talk about
the commitment

Of the international community
to the aids pandemic.

- This was 6,000 africans
dying every day

Of a preventable,
treatable disease.

Concerning hiv.

But they don't have to.

If that population
was anywhere else,

There is a treatment,

And we just have to get it
affordable and accessible.

- And he wanted to talk about
the possibility

Of us leadership in
taking on that challenge.

(bono): As unappealing as it was
to u2's audience

Having their singer
hang out with a republican,

It was just as much

A bad photo op for them.

♪ only to be with you

- I was a little bit worried
about bringing bono

In to see the president.

- Josh is briefing me.

You know you'll stand here.
You'll say bono this, bono that.

I said, "I got it, josh.
I got it."

And he's leaving
the oval office

And he turns over his shoulder
and said,

"you do know who bono is,
don't you?"

And I said,
"yeah, he married cher."

(laughs)

- And I turned around
and I looked at his face

And I could not tell
whether he was kidding.

And I said, "no, that's
sonny bono, who is dead."

- And in comes
the great star bono.

♪ still haven't found
what I'm looking for ♪

(george w. Bush): He surprised
me by giving me a bible.

I think there's a way
if he really wanted

To share with me
a, a part of his being.

- I knew he was a man of faith

And I thought he might enjoy

This ancient irish bible.

- Well, he made the case
about people dying of aids.

I had campaigned and told people

The guiding principle
of my administration

Was all life is precious

And we're all god's children.

(bono): I asked george bush,
"is there a hierarchy to sin?"

He gave me the best answer
anyone ever gave me. He said,

"ah, the sin of omission?"

The sin of omission.

- Well, the sin of omission
would be to say

I'm not going to do it
'cause I'm too busy,

Or 'cause you know, whatever.

And we'll let
all those people die.

- I'm being informed
that there's a pandemic

Destroying an entire generation
of people

On the continent of africa,

And at the time
that I'm the president of the,

Which I consider the most
generous nation in the world,

And we're doing
nothing about it.

It struck my heart.

(♪ with or without you
by u2 playing)

- A year passed
from that fateful day

When bono met president bush

And, and I assume bono
was wondering,

Okay, what's happening
with aids relief?

And the president had decided

That he wanted to do it
in his state of the union.

- I asked the congress
to commit $15 billion

Over the next five years,

Including nearly $10 billion
in new money

To turn the tide against aids
in the most afflicted nations

Of africa and the caribbean.

(all clapping)

(bush): We caught a lot
of people by surprise.

And there are isolationist
elements at the time,

Not nearly as significant
as they are today,

Where people say, why the hell
we going to spend money over

In africa when we got bridge
problems here?

Or road problems in my state?

- Bono got george bush
to get $15 billion

To black people who don't vote,
who have aids.

- Pepfar, the president's
emergency plan for aids relief,

Is the largest
health intervention

In the history
of health interventions.

It has saved 26 million lives.

- The fundamental question
for americans,

Is that our national interest?

I decided it was, of course.

I think a great nation

Also should be
a compassionate nation.

♪ with or without you

(rice): President bush had made
his commitment,

And now what was the rest
of the world going to say?

(tense music)

(blair): The uk was going
to host g8 summit in 2005.

G8 summits, they're useful
for leaders to come together

And talk about things, but they
don't have big consequence.

(blair): I was very determined
that we should try and make

This g8 summit in 2005
a meaningful summit.

We were going to try to do
huge things,

Particularly on africa.

But it had to be more than just
about an act of charity.

I thought there was a chance

Because we had formed

This commission that bob
asked us to do.

- The commission
for africa report

Set out the broad agenda.

It kind of created
the road map,

Or, as tony blair called it,
the bible,

For what he finally
wanted at the g8 meeting

In gleneagles.

(reporter 4): The plan
for africa is radical,

Including a 100 percent
cancellation of debt,

Doubling aid to £26 billion
a year in the first instance,

And removing unfair trade
barriers.

(geldof): I'd sworn
to the prime minister

That I would do the public

If he implemented
the commission for africa.

Which was the cancellation
of debt to the poorest

And a doubling of aid.

- I thought that I could be
a good bridge between

The complexity
of the commission for africa

And the simplicity of what
the public might respond to.

Okay, well,
we'll ask about that.

Myself and bob spoke often

And we believed that we could
come up

With an interesting campaign,

Which is a campaign that turned
into make poverty history.

(geldof speaking indistinctly)

(crowd cheering)

(curtis): Then we had this
opportunity for nelson mandela

To launch it.

(mandela): Millions of people

In the world's
poorest countries,

They are trapped
in the prism of poverty.

It is time to set them free.

- Mandela's presence
was to bring a very strong

African leadership to it,

And my presence was to say
we are organizing globally.

A conversation broke out
about "celebrocracy"

Which is the domination
of public space by celebrities.

But blunt truth is,

We had access to people
in power,

But nothing like what

The celebrities
were able to deliver.

(curtis): It seemed to me
that if the make poverty history

Campaign could have
a second live aid,

That it might be possible
to make it something

Which was noisy and popular
and famous,

And therefore, more effective.

- I can't over dramatize

How much of a refusenik I was.

I was not going to do this.

Then bono,

Who knows me very well,

Came and said...

- Imagine paul mccartney.

♪ twenty 20 years ago today

♪ sgt. Pepper taught
the band to play ♪

- It was 20 years ago today.

Walking on stage.

Paul mccartney.

And u2.

And I went...

'cause he had me.

- Then he got a sense
that it might be magnificent,

And he came up with live 8,

In other words, do a concert
in each of the g8 countries.

So, I had an office
with a spare sofa

And a very tolerant staff.

(geldof): Hello.

(curtis): Bob always had
his phone on speaker,

Which meant that you could hear

Every conversation he ever had.

And he talks very loud
in order to convince people.

- Did I have to call
all these people again?

The embarrassment of it,
you have no idea.

It's not as if,
"hey pete, it's bob."

Or "madge, it's geldof again."
it's not. It's like...

Mick?

It's bob.

(jagger): Hi, bob.
- I'm here to haunt you.

(jagger): Good.
- If you're not there,

There's someone missing.

There's someone missing,
and the missing one is you.

(jagger): Well, I really
appreciate that.

Um... Let me think about it,
bob.

(audience clapping)

(reporter 5): Bob geldof walked
into a london hotel today

To do what he had promised
never to do,

Stage another concert
like live aid.

Some of music's biggest artists
have been signed up,

From coldplay to madonna
to paul mccartney.

- July the 2nd isn't the end
of our 20-year trek,

It's the beginning
of the final leg.

What live aid did
joyously, enthusiastically,

Was open up the avenues
of possibility.

Finally, live 8 invites you
to walk down them.

- Live 8 was born out of
a famine trying to raise money.

And this was trying to deal
with the large politics

And how the eight most
powerful men in the world

At that moment could change
the structures on debt

And trade and aid,
not just adding a little bit

Of money to the pot.

- When was the last g8?

When did you ever read about it?

When, what was the agenda?

And did you know the leaders
had even gone?

And when they came back,
did the press question them? No.

(geldof): A million people
on the streets

Of every capital city.

That was my plan,

And was called live 8,
8, 8, everywhere.

- Well, the live 8 concerts
intended to call attention

To poverty in africa
are beginning

Around the world today.

Nbc's michelle kosinski
is in philadelphia,

The only us concert site.
Good morning, michelle.

- Good morning, amy.
And it is a beautiful morning

In downtown philadelphia.
We're still a couple hours

Away from showtime, but you can
see people are screaming.

Many of them have been
here since before dawn.

This is a sequel to live aid
in philadelphia, 1985.

Now he's back
in the same t-shirt.

- We're just here to let
the world know

That, that we do care.

(crowd cheering)

- It's great when the musicians
can get together,

All together like this,

And do it for the cause
of poverty.

- Live 8 concerts are going
to be taking place

On four continents.
Let's go to london right now,

Live to hyde park.

- I feel like I won
the assignment lottery

This weekend. This is definitely
the place to be.

- Everybody here is not only
here for the music,

But they're here just to show
that we, as a nation,

Are committed to ending poverty.

(crowd cheering)

- Just the start of live 8.

U2, we're in our dressing room.

We closed the door.
Have this prayer thing.

Our manager, dennis sheehan,
god rest his soul,

Is our, he knows nobody
can come in,

In that moment,
it's private moments.

(knocking)

Don't answer the door.

Finish the prayer.

I ask dennis, I said,
"what was that at the door?"

He said. "oh, that was, um...

That was sir paul mccartney."

I said "paul mccartney?
Oh, god!"

Ran out. I go, "paul!"

He said, "what were you doin'?

What were you doin'?"

I said, "we just have little
prayer moments, you know.

One of those prayer moments."

"why didn't you ask me?

I mean, if you asked me,
I'd love to part of that."

He said, "have it again,
with me."

(bono): It was the most
poetic prayer.

And then we went on stage.

with bob on this,

Myself, and bono.

It was clear that, you know,

There should be more
african representation

In live 8.

And there was a great
african musician,

Youssou n'dour. He did perform.

I wish his voice
had been heard more.

- We did our best to make it
more involving of...

African acts.

And failed.

We fucked up.

- Africa! Unite!

- Hi, everybody. I want to say

Welcome america to live 8.

Now, the reason that millions
of you have tuned in

Is because every three seconds,

In one of the poorest countries
in the world,

A child dies as a result
of extreme poverty.

Now we can forgive debt,

But we cannot forget
that right now,

A child in africa dies
every three seconds.

Was a way of making

The horror of the thing

Immediately accessible.

- It noodled around in her head.

- And then I thought twice
about what it's all about,

And the pressure that it's going
to put on the world leaders

Who are meeting in three days

To decide whether
to remove debts.

That's the most important thing.

(geldof): Madonna became
emblematic

Of the whole adventure
of live aid

Through to live 8.

And symbols are so important.

(geldof): See this little girl?

She had 10 minutes to live
20 years ago,

And because we did
a concert in this city

And in philadelphia,

And all of you came,

Last week, she did her
agricultural exams

In the school she goes to

In the northern ethiopian
highlands.

She's here tonight.
This little girl.

Where a character
like president bush

Is more than bemused

At the sight of myself
and bob running around.

(bush): I didn't have any clue
who geldof was.

Yeah, he and bono came in.

Bono, at least
somewhat presentable.

Geldof looked like he, you know,

Crawled out from underneath
the ground.

But he was a good guy.
He cared deeply.

I'm sure I insisted upon
the picture to prove

I actually met geldof.
(laughs)

(blair): We hadn't got
the africa deal

Before the summit began.

It wasn't across the line,

And there was still quite
a lot of opposition to it.

- The americans had a strategy

For a while that the,

That the top issue that
would get agreed at gleneagles

Would be debt cancellation,

And we wanted a doubling
of aid for africa as well.

- There was no relationship
the president had

Around the world that was closer

Than the one he had
with tony blair.

He made it very clear
that this summit

Had to be a success
for the prime minister.

- The meeting started,

But it had only been going,

I suppose 15, 20 minutes or so

When news began to come in.

(reporter 6): In the last
few minutes,

We've been getting reports
of an explosion

Between liverpool street
and aldgate stations in london.

(blair): I remembered jonathan
coming in and telling me,

"we don't know exactly
what's happened,

But we think
it's a terrorist attack."

- The prime minister was quite
shaken by the news

That he had heard,
and he shared it

With the other leaders.
President bush spoke up first.

- Told blair,
"get down to london.

You don't need to...
We can handle our own up here,

You know. Get down there
and do your job."

(reporter 7): There were
at least six explosions,

The home secretary
has just confirmed.

(geldof): I remember just
looking and being a bit confused

By this.

Being horrified by the bombs.

We thought, that's it.

This g8 is going
to be cancelled.

- With tony blair gone,

The question was, well,
what happened to the g8?

And they agreed, well,
the g8 must go on.

- It could have all fractured.

One of those leaders could
have taken advantage of it.

It was a maximum
moment of risk.

(helicopter blades thumping)

- After the terrorist attacks,

Tony blair came back
from london, exhausted.

- In a strange way,
because of the 7/7 bombings,

The summit suddenly took on
a completely new

Appearance of being also,

In part, a...
A stand against terrorism.

- As a believer that
us influence for peace

Is important, and one way
to encourage the peace

Is to help nations
struggling underneath,

You know, the burden of debt.

- What had been really
hanging in the balance

the commitment, it came through.

Signing up to it.

With the african leaders
in attendance.

(blair): It was definitely
the most extraordinary weekend

I had in my time
as prime minister.

It was a...

Probably one of the last moments

Of truly global solidarity

That I can remember.

(reporter 8): The figures agreed
sound immense,

$50 billion extra in aid
for the developing world

By 2010, $25 billion
of that for africa.

A number of the ngos
in this area are saying that

2010 is too late,

That the money is needed
more urgently in africa now.

- I'm afraid you just did,
this is a natural

Course of events,
you get fed up

With the parts of,
parts of the ngo community

Because whatever you do,
it's never enough.

(reporter 9): Disappointment
with the deal

And some of its
famous backers

Came to a head
later in the afternoon.

- The fact that aid was delayed
'til 2010

Meant there's a lot
of room for wriggle out, right?

Because five years,
people have forgotten,

The context has changed.

Our reading is that the g8
has listened,

But their response has not
been a roar, but a whisper.

I do my, "people roared
and g8 whispered,"

And then bob takes
the thing and goes...

- When did 10 million people
alive become a whisper?

- This is how many lives
will be saved as a result

Of this aid money, which
will come five years later.

(bono): It was very,
very intense moments.

I'm just thinking
we're advancing our cause.

A mountain has been climbed.

And only to reveal
higher peaks, for sure,

On the other side of it.

But it's worth just stopping
for a second

And looking back

Down the valley
at where we've all come.

Doubling aid to africa
has not been easy.

♪ it's christmas time

♪ there's no time to be afraid

♪ at christmas time

♪ we let in light
and we banish shade ♪

♪ and in our world of plenty

♪ we can spread a smile of joy

♪ throw your arms
around the world ♪

extraordinary

In the proper sense
of extraordinary.

♪ pray for the other ones

Generationally,
it still lives on.

Not just live aid,
but band aid, the whole thing.

♪ it's hard but when
you're having fun ♪

- Are you having fun?

♪ well tonight thank god
it's them instead of you ♪

- I think there were very many
good people

With good intentions
that were involved

Both with live aid and live 8.

♪ the greatest gift
they'll get this year ♪

I think that there was not
enough sensitivity

To understanding

That it's not right
for a bunch of

Predominantly white male folks

To get together and say,
we're going to frame

A continent like this.

- What bob, and bono,
and others have done

Over the years has resulted in,

I don't know, probably millions
of people living,

Who otherwise would have died.

I don't think there's any
remote ideological argument

That should stand
in the way of that.

- Sing it to the world!

♪ feed the world

- 20th anniversary
was just a convergence

Of good fortune

And good actors
on the world stage.

♪ let them know that
springtime is coming ♪

(bono): What's happening now
in politics means

This anniversary could be
a funeral

For the last 40 years.

(geldof): What I love is that
younger people say,

I'm not going to do it
like they did it.

And they're right, 'cause
I don't think that'll work.

But I can utilize
this new stuff I've got,

To do something weird, and mad,
and wild.

And if that's what
we leave behind,

Then that's what I'd love
to be the parting shot.
