The Dakar started in 1977

as a rally race from Paris to Senegal in Africa.

It's moved all around the world since,

but it's been in Saudi Arabia for the last few years.

The rally consists of multiple time stages,

and at the end, we add it all up

and the person with the best time wins the whole race.

So, of course, you can win the stage and that's awesome,

but it doesn't mean much outside of the whole.

Uh, we have multiple separate categories of vehicles.

They race each other but don't mix.

Cars versus cars. Trucks versus trucks.

Buggies versus buggies.

Just at the last possible...

We don't mix categories.

I personally race in the motorcycle category.

Price, the Dakar leader...

To be the first Australian to win the Dakar, it's insane.

Toby Price, taking over at the top,

winning his second Dakar title.

We do it the old-fashioned way using a road book.

There is a very real chance of getting lost

in the middle of the desert,

or worse.

Toby Price in the lead again,

but sadly a dark day on Dakar 2020.

It's with a heavy heart that we begin with the tragic news

that Paulo Gonçalves has died

after crashing in today's seventh stage.

Price stopped to help when he came across the scene.

The entire Dakar family

would like to extend its sincerest condolences

to all of Paulo's family and friends.

It's known as the most dangerous race

in the world, really, cos we...

we cover so many kilometers over so many days, and...

we never get to see the track.

Every day, we go into a track completely blind and...

we're expected to go speeds

of up to 170, 80 kilometers an hour.

Unfortunately, we normally have

one casualty and one fatality each year.

It's... yeah, it's quite tough on the riders and drivers.

Last time I won it, I did it with a broken wrist.

I've paid the price for that.

I have quite a lot of scars on the body.

Let's have you move this thumb now.

My broken bone tally is up to 30.

Injuries definitely take their toll.

It's a little tight, but...

Sainz was over the moon.

Throughout the day, Sainz changed gear 2,066 times.

With Sainz eventually winning his first Dakar.

This is my 17th time racing at Dakar.

It always changes.

Why am I still doing this?

My kids are grown up.

My son is a professional driver himself, but he races F1.

He hasn't raced Dakar yet.

He's part of our legacy.

There is no race more extreme than this.

But I do have a new challenge.

This year, we'll race an all-electric car.

Every other team in T1 is still petrol power.

Stéphane Peterhansel has been doing this

even longer than I have.

We've been on many different teams as rivals,

but Audi wanted the most experienced drivers

to race their electric cars.

So now we are teammates.

An old driver in the newest machine.

This is a big test.

But we're not off to a good start.

It's only my second time at Dakar.

I'm going up against the legends of the sport.

I don't know if I can win,

but I want to make an impression and get on a team.

what I'd be doing if it wasn't for rally.

It doesn't feel like work yet.

It's not about the racing,

it's about the riding and the adventure,

and I've seen so many different crazy places.

I'm not an amateur but I'm not on a factory team.

Supermarkets in Jeddah.

So I have a few sponsors

but I have to pay for everything myself.

You need to figure out how to raise maybe another 7,000

in the next two weeks.

My parents have done so much for me.

I don't want to let them down.

We can get cash when we get there from the airport.

If you get a speeding penalty on your bike,

you're not allowed to start the next day until you pay in cash.

Factory racers like Toby Price have huge support teams.

A few weeks ago, I was invited

to join Red Bull's new junior team.

They want to develop us to drive in T1, eventually.

I'm on the team with Seth Quintero,

one of the newest, fastest, and most exciting drivers.

We're on a team of "young" talents, even though I'm not the youngest.

In T1 most people are older

Carlos is 60.

And Nasser is around 46.

Seth is a very promising driver,

he's doing super well.

It's funny because he comes off as a typical American dude,

but then he's a sweetie.

We race light vehicles called side-by-sides.

-The T3 category. -It's good, or no?

Seth is kind of the star driver of our team.

He already has a world record.

-In the dunes, it's OK? -It's hot, but...

Last year, he won almost every stage at Dakar,

even though he didn't win the whole rally.

What happened inside your team when I came?

-He wouldn't tell us. -Actually, nothing.

Until the morning you came there.

-But he told you it's a girl? -No. We didn't know anything.

This is a tough year.

Fourteen stages, 15 days, 9,000 kilometers.

What's so challenging is that there is no track.

You get the road book that morning

with no time to prepare in advance

and that's what makes the Dakar the toughest race in the world.

My body might be falling to pieces,

but I can still do this.

Sam won the Dakar last year. He's a pro.

I didn't know that that was a thing that I should know.

I wouldn't be worried about tomorrow or the next day.

At Dakar, there is no track. Just the road book.

Here everything can end in an instant, and just like life,

you never know what is around the next corner.

But also... there's freedom here.

No roads, just sand.

You can just go here, fast as hell.

I am used to racing on roads,

but here, it's a different kind of focus.

Primitive and wild.

And if you lose that focus...

the desert will crush you.

They call Peterhansel "Mr Dakar".

But even he can lose everything in an instant.

Before the race,

I said if I win the race, I will stop.

So it will be not possible this year.

It's an uninhabited chunk of desert,

650,000 square kilometers.

No people, not even camels.

This is what it's all about.

Sand dunes as tall as skyscrapers.

Sand and steel.

And again, we are alone.

Even though I haven't won

a single stage, I'm doing OK.

My times are good. I'm number four.

For me, it's all about consistency.

But I need to really shine here. At least win a stage.

I have to get to top three.

all the way to the finish, I brought ten cars with me.
