Episode 10

Mr. Lang.

Why don't you show us...

-how the red face came about? -How dare you!

You are not allowed to pull a trick before His Majesty!

Are you scared?

What if that's poison?

Your Majesty! There's no need to waste time on her!

Guards!

Seize her!

I dare you to!

Your Majesty. Your Highness.

Ye Ning Zhi was allowed to talk earlier.

Why do they want to shut her up now that she is speaking for me?

Back off!

What?

Is Commander Li not the only one defying my orders today?

Let her finish.

It's evident that...

everyone mistook Fu Shi Gui's condition...

for demonic possession...

because he can dance.

In fact, he can dance like a young lady...

and that is difficult to fake.

However,

I happened to know the reason.

This is their acknowledgment of apprenticeship.

Fu Shi Gui and his sister were helpless orphans back then.

So, they picked up dancing.

They used to dance in the market as sisters.

The finger print on this...

is exactly the same as Fu Shi Gui's finger print.

Here's another acknowledgment of apprenticeship.

This is written by his ventriloquy teacher.

The 6 different voices you heard...

from Fu Shi Gui were actually ventriloquy.

You're lying!

I'm lying?

At least 30 people from that village...

can prove that you learnt ventriloquy.

Should I bring them over to confront you?

Sister.

Commander Li.

Commander Li.

Don't go.

Are you too embarrassed?

Show us your face!

-What's going on? -Right!

What happened?

What happened to him?

Ye Ning Zhi.

I don't know what you did.

But, the empress dowager saw six phantoms walking out of his body!

Would Her Highness lie about that?

Aren't you insulting Her Highness?

Noble Consort Fu.

What interrupted you?

Did you feel like you were bitten by a mosquito?

Your Highness.

Did you feel like you were bitten by a mosquito...

each time you saw the illusions?

Yes.

That was indeed the case.

And you, Your Majesty?

That's right.

I did feel like...

I was bitten by a mosquito.

Your Majesty.

This is a kind of hidden weapon that came from State of Yueling.

It has a poison needle in it which is as fine as hair.

Simply blow the tube and it'll pierce into the target's body...

and disappear.

In fact,

the victim will hallucinate right away.

-This... -So that's the reason.

-Yes. -She used a hidden weapon.

I actually thought the spirits were real.

It turned out to be a lie.

There's a dragon over there!

-Sister! -There's a dragon there!

Sister, there's no dragon!

-Capture that dragon! -Sister!

It's true!

-Capture it! -Sister, there's no dragon!

It's right there!

It's right there!

I loved and trusted you so much.

Over there.

Yet, you turned out to be...

a scheming woman.

Nothing is more dangerous...

than a woman's heart.

Sister, are you alright?

Your Majesty.

It was Mr. Wei who exposed them...

and solved the mystery.

The credit goes to him.

But now, he's in great danger.

In order to threaten me, Noble Consort Fu...

arrested Jiang Hong Xue, the only physician who can save Mr. Wei.

Your Majesty.

This is outrageous.

Release Jiang Hong Xue at once...

and let him treat Wei Guang!

No one is allowed to obstruct him!

Yes!

-Sister! -There's a dragon!

There's no dragon, sister!

It's me! Look at me!

Sister!

-I can see it! -Sister!

I see it! It's right there!

-It's not! -It's right there!

Calm down, sister!

Sister!

Your Majesty.

Looks like I've to return to the prison.

You promised that you won't kill me, right?

There's really a dragon!

It's right there!

His Majesty and Her Majesty have arrived!

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Don't mind the formalities.

You're meritorious.

Physician Jiang.

I thought you said that...

Mr. Wei will regain consciousness in 2 days.

If I could treat him a few days earlier,

his condition would have improved by now.

Unfortunately, I came late.

There is blood stasis in Mr. Wei's brain.

There's nothing I can do about it.

What?

If Mr. Wei doesn't recover,

Noble Consort Fu will have to take responsibility for it.

Physician Jiang.

I have only one question.

Do you have the confidence to save Mr. Wei?

Your Majesty.

I'm afraid there's only a 30% chance.

Ye Ning Zhi.

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Rise at once.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

I didn't want to startle you,

but I still ended up startling you.

What are you doing here in the middle of the night?

I just recalled how...

Fu Shi Gui dumped Xiao Hua beside this banyan tree that night,

thinking she was dead.

Is that so?

Can you tell me the reason?

Have Your Majesty heard of the legend of the banyan tree?

What legend?

It was actually Her Majesty who told me.

Her Majesty told me that...

a black python demon is trapped underneath this banyan tree...

and that if you make your wishes here,

it will realize 3 wishes for you.

But, once your wishes come true,

you will face an irreversible consequence.

Back in the Imperial Garden, you busted the lies about the spirits.

Do you believe in a legend like this?

It's just a story that shouldn't be taken seriously.

I once made 3 wishes here.

What were your wishes?

Every single wish...

had something to do with Mr. Wei.

But, for each wish I made,

I brought an irreversible disaster to Mr. Wei.

My last wish...

was for Mr. Wei to regain consciousness.

Not long after I made my wish,

his hand moved.

He was about to regain consciousness.

But at that crucial time,

Noble Consort Fu obstructed his treatment.

This is an evil tree.

Mr. Wei...

might be doomed.

It's just a coincidence.

Besides, Physician Jiang said...

there's still a chance for Wei Guang to regain consciousness.

He said there's only a 30% chance.

I'm the one who made those wishes.

Why do you let Mr. Wei bear the consequences?

You should make me pay for it.

Mr. Wei is such a kind person.

If this tree can really make one's wishes come true,

then I shall...

make a wish here.

We've been losing our battles at the frontier.

It's been a long time since I last received the news of a victory.

The officials in the court...

are either manipulative or corrupt.

If what you say is true,

Wei Guang is surely very important to Liang.

You know what's going on in the royal harem.

This place is a mess full of dirty deeds.

Listen, Black Python Demon!

The Emperor of Liang is making a wish now!

Stop, Your Majesty!

This is an evil tree!

You're the Emperor of Liang! You can't make a wish here!

Are you worried about me?

I'm sorry.

You women always make a big deal out of everything.

I've issued an order...

to gather all talented people in Yandu...

to save Wei Guang.

Wei Guang is a lucky one.

He'll definitely make it through this.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

You're so worried about Wei Guang.

Are you...

in love with him?

No.

You don't have to hide it from me.

I can tell from your actions.

Do you know that...

falling in love in the palace...

is a big no-no?

All palace maids are my women.

Your Majesty.

This is just my wishful thought!

Mr. Wei has never reciprocated!

It's alright. Calm down.

Forget that I asked...

and cry no more.

Go back and wait for Mr. Wei's recovery.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

It's getting late.

Go back and get some rest.

Goodbye, Your Majesty.

Who are you?

Ms. Ning Zhi.

Who gave these to you?

A person who walked like the four-legged eunuch...

and looked exactly like the late Eunuch Gao.

That's unbelievable.

Take me to him right away.

I'm afraid I can't.

He hurried away after leaving this bag under the tree.

I couldn't find him.

I've never seen him before either.

I don't even know if he's human.

Coming from an old eunuch, this is impressive.

Whatever it is,

Mr. Wei is saved.

These things can save Mr. Wei?

I've been considering a method.

To save Mr. Wei,

I will have to insert a needle at the Baihui Point on his skull.

However, it is extremely risky.

I've never tried it before.

The acupuncture points the needle has to go through,

the length of the needle...

and the supplementary medicine...

are all decisive.

I had no confidence...

and I didn't dare to try.

Surprisingly,

this old eunuch...

solved all these problems for me.

You mean, Mr. Wei can be saved now?

Eighty percent.

There's an 80% chance in saving Mr. Wei.

Physician Jiang.

Please treat him now.

Alright.

Physician Jiang is a cautious person.

If he says there's an 80% chance,

it means the success rate is 100%.

I believe Wei Guang will soon regain consciousness.

Don't worry too much.

If this is the case,

we really need to thank that four-legged eunuch.

He saved Wei Guang.

This is really strange.

When I was deceived by Fu Shi Gui,

I saw the four-legged eunuch too.

I thought it was just my imagination.

Surprisingly, this four-legged eunuch really exists.

I find it strange too.

If he's an impersonator,

why did he impersonate the four-legged eunuch?

In fact, he seems to be friendly.

He's also an excellent physician.

I'm puzzled as well.

Never mind.

We'll leave this to Wei Guang after he regains consciousness.

By the way,

Lang Kun said the Queen of the Night in the Imperial Garden...

might bloom at dusk today.

Why don't you come with me to view it?

Your Majesty.

Lang Kun is a traitor.

Do you still want him?

Mr. Lang has arrived!

Greetings, Your Majesty.

For more than 10 years,

I've been a fair person.

I know how to tell the good and bad people apart.

I sensed that Noble Consort Fu was up to no good.

So I planned ahead.

On the surface,

I had you fighting against Noble Consort Fu.

Underneath the surface,

I sent Lang Kun to approach her and be my spy.

Really?

But someone might just be after the fame and fortune.

On the surface, he's a spy.

But in reality, he's just a fence-sitter.

The day I exposed Noble Consort Fu,

I noticed that...

Mr. Lang looked pretty anxious.

As a spy sent by Her Majesty,

unless Her Majesty changes her order,

I must dutifully look the part.

Even if I was in mortal danger,

I wouldn't waver a bit.

Don't worry, Ning Zhi.

If Lang Kun is untrustworthy,

there's no one else I can trust in this world.

Maintaining the peace outside is His Majesty's duty.

Maintaining order in here is my duty.

Both of you are my meritorious aides.

I hope you get along with each other...

and help me maintain the order here.

Then fame and fortune will come your way.

Yes.

Your Majesty, the Queen of the Night has bloomed.

Would you like to go and have a look?

It must be beautiful.

I must see it myself.

Ye Ning Zhi.

What are you waiting for?

Your Majesty, Mr. Wei has regained consciousness.

Really?

She's so rash.

If she were to serve someone else,

she would have gotten herself expelled.

Wei Guang.

Wei Guang, you're awake at last.

These are the letters I wrote to you after I entered the palace.

I didn't know where to mail them to...

and I didn't have a chance to pass them to you.

You must go through all of them.

Also,

never talk to me like you're dying again.

Get it?

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Judging from your happy faces,

Wei Guang must be fine now.

Thanks to Your Majesty,

I've fully recovered.

Good.

By the way,

how's the investigation on the four-legged eunuch?

For the moment being, I've no clue yet.

But, Ning Zhi saw the portrait of Eunuch Gao I sent...

and said he looked almost exactly the same.

I believe I'll just have to start from investigating Eunuch Gao.

But Your Majesty,

if it happened once, it will happen again.

The four-legged eunuch might be suspicious,

but he's a person in the palace...

and he lent us a hand.

He'll definitely appear again.

You don't have to worry.

In my opinion,

this man is no enemy.

Alright.

Do put in more effort to solve this mystery.

You two contributed greatly in bringing down Noble Consort Fu.

What reward do you want?

I'm Your Majesty's servant.

I'm grateful enough for your care.

I dare not ask for a reward.

Is that so?

I thought you have feelings for Wei Guang...

and I was thinking of betrothing you to him.

If that's the case...

Looks like you've decided...

to spend the rest of your days with me.

I'd love to stay with Your Majesty, but...

But...

Mr. Wei is my savior.

I'm willing to follow him.

Alright.

I've decided to give you 3 rewards.

Go back and think about it carefully.

As long as it's within my capacity,

I will agree.

Thank you, Your Majesty!

The palace maids always say that I'm cold...

and inconsiderate to the servants.

This time, I'll prove them wrong.

Her Majesty is surprisingly generous.

This is such a huge reward.

I need to think of...

what to get for the two remaining rewards.

Two remaining rewards?

I've decided on the first one.

I want Lang Kun to...

immediately take back the order to arrest my mother and the rest.

You read the letters I wrote to you.

He was so mean to the Pear Blossom Academy.

Yet, you said to me,

"We must not kill Lang Kun."

Ning Zhi.

Do you have wishes for yourself?

Yes.

I hope my sisters in the Pear Blossom Academy...

won't be bullied anymore.

What about yourself?

What do you want?

Me?

Actually, I've always had a wish.

I want to be an official.

Where did you get that idea?

From operas.

A good official can save so many people.

Since I was a child,

I performed with my mother for a living.

I know...

how difficult it is to survive in this world.

The commoners have a rough time.

Just take Xiao Li's death...

and our troupe's plight for example.

It all happened because of the orders of one official.

If I become an official,

I will be...

a good official who will redress the injustice for the folks.

I'll punish bad guys like Lang Kun!

But, throughout the history of Liang,

there were less than 20 female officials in total.

If you want to be a female official,

it won't be easy at all.

Someone once said...

I can't survive in the royal harem.

But, look at me.

I'm alive and kicking.

I've even earned the empress' recognition.

Female dominance is a taboo in our country.

Emperor Taizu set a rule...

prohibiting imperial consorts from intervening in state affairs.

As a palace maid, it's even more difficult...

for you to be promoted to the position of a female official.

Does that mean it's impossible?

Not necessarily.

If you contribute greatly to the country...

and gain support from the royal members,

you might be able to make it.

I exposed Noble Consort Fu and Yan Kuan.

The empress is a member of the royal family too!

Then I'll be waiting for you to become "Madam Ye".

If you're not a palace maid,

when it comes to marriage,

you'll have more freedom.

Then...

So that's what you've in mind.

Then I'll have to work harder...

to become a female official.

It's not really a fruitless trip.

Eunuch Gao's corpse...

is still in the coffin.

So, that guy in the palace...

is definitely not the four-legged eunuch.

But, we're out of clues now.

Not really.

That mysterious person disguised as Eunuch Gao.

This shows that he doesn't want to be seen.

That means,

he doesn't want to reveal his true identity.

I don't quite get it.

That mysterious person must have concealed his identity...

for a reason.

Let's just observe for now.

Mr. Wei.

You look restless.

I'm just reminded of some past incidents.

Past incidents?

You've only told me about your father.

He died of injustice.

My mother had passed away.

All these years,

I've been alone.

My father was a general.

Then the late emperor ordered to tear him apart with horses.

That's so cruel.

What was he convicted of?

I tried to investigate.

From what I heard,

the late emperor suspected that my father colluded with the enemy.

Maybe he felt threatened by my father.

Anyway,

rumours aren't reliable information.

It was the empress dowager who protected me back then.

I asked Her Highness before.

But she wouldn't tell me.

She only consoled me.

That further convinced me that...

my father was wronged.

You once told me that...

you need to serve the empress.

Is it because she can help you with your father's case?

Not just that.

His Majesty used to adore the empress.

After becoming the empress,

Her Majesty became powerful and influential.

Today, even the empress dowager needs to show her some respect...

and this is the reason.

Although the women cannot intervene in state affairs,

be it in the court or the society,

there are predetermined rules.

Her Majesty is very influential in the court.

I hope that one day,

I can return to the court to follow in my father's footsteps...

and be a general.

This is the loyalty that flows...

in the blood of the descendants of Wei family.

But, as the son of a sinner,

this is...

not quite possible.

As such, I can only...

count on Her Majesty.

Have you decided on your 3 rewards?

First of all,

please take back the order to arrest my mother and friends...

and allow them to return to Han City.

No problem.

I approve.

However, once they return to Han City,

they must not speak a word of...

the deeds of Lang Kun and Yang Biao.

I understand.

As for my second request,

please take back Lang Kun's authority to manage the Pear Blossom Academy.

All members of the Pear Blossom Academy...

are dutiful servants.

Please approve my request,

so that Lang Kun stops bullying them.

Alright.

That's just a small favor.

As for the third...

Are you sure?

The third is also the last.

Shouldn't you ask for something for yourself?

I know that...

you came to the palace for Wei Guang.

Now, I've put him in an important position.

Lang Kun has also promised...

to stop giving him a hard time.

So, don't you want to request...

to leave the palace and marry Wei Guang?

According to the palace rules,

palace maids may leave the palace at a certain age.

However, they can only get married 3 years after that.

But of course,

I can grant you special permission.

Mr. Wei has a wish he has yet to realize.

So, my third wish is,

please recommend and support Mr. Wei,

so that he can become a general...

and fight for the country.

This is...

not something I'm capable of doing.

I don't think I can help you.

Mr. Wei is intelligent.

He also came from a family of generals.

He'll surely succeed as a military leader.

When he returns victorious,

he will definitely repay Your Majesty.

With his support,

Your Majesty's position...

will be reinforced.

You are...

too simple-minded.

The court rejected Wei Guang...

mainly because His Majesty doesn't trust him.

And my words...

can't change His Majesty's mind.

So, I will let you save your third reward for now.

The day you come round to it...

and decide to leave the palace,

I'll let you marry Wei Guang.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

You've just received your rewards. Why do you look so unhappy?

Why did Her Majesty say that...

His Majesty doesn't trust you?

You made a request for me?

It didn't work out.

But,

your other wish is about to come true.

Her Majesty gave me permission to leave the palace.

In fact,

she gave me special permission...

to not wait for 3 years to get married.

Wait for me out there.

I'll go to your mother and propose.

Ms. Ye.

How may I help you, sister?

I'm Noble Consort Fu's personal attendant.

Noble Consort Fu will be executed in a few days.

She wants to meet you.

Your Highness, Ye Ning Zhi is here.

How may I help you?

There's something I need to know.

Else, I won't be able to rest in peace.

Ye Ning Zhi.

Who exactly are you?

I'm just an ordinary palace maid from Yong De Palace.

I don't believe it.

Yan Kuan's plan was so complex.

Ordinary people wouldn't be able to see through it.

Are you really just an ordinary palace maid?

Your Highness.

You are bearing the consequence of your action.

I was just lucky.

You did so many bad things.

Don't you feel remorseful?

Remorseful?

Why would I feel remorseful?

From a homeless girl who had to make ends meet,

I became the emperor's favourite woman.

I've had my glorious days.

Why should I feel regretful?

Then please have a good time in the Cold Palace.

Don't go!

I have a request.

A request?

What can I possibly do for you?

Besides,

you harmed me and Wei Guang.

Since my downfall,

everyone came to ridicule me.

You're the only one...

that didn't humiliate me.

I rose to the position of noble consort...

because I had an eye for people.

You have...

a quality I used to scorn,

kindness.

At this point, I can only beg for your help.

I can accept death.

But my Kang Er...

He's still so little...

and His Majesty wants to give him away...

to the concubine of Prince Nan Ping.

Prince Nan Ping's concubine...

is infamous for being a hypocrite.

She's a wolf in sheep clothing.

She has always hated me...

and Shi Gui killed her son.

If Kang Er is in her hands,

he'll definitely die.

I'm just an ordinary palace maid.

I don't think I can help you.

I beg of you.

You're the empress' trusted aide.

She'll listen to you.

Please persuade her...

to let Kang Er stay in the palace...

and let a kind consort raise him.

I beg of you.

Please help this desperate mother.

I beg of you!

I beg of you!

I beg of you.

Can't you see that she brought this upon herself?

Noble Consort Fu asked for this.

For her crimes,

sending her son away...

instead of banishing him to the Cold Palace...

is already merciful of us!

Your Majesty.

Noble Consort Fu will be executed soon.

She can't cause any more troubles.

If you...

spare the little prince at a time like this,

you can show that you care for the royal descendants...

and people will see that you are kind and virtuous.

The entire nation...

will only praise you for your benevolence.

Ye Ning Zhi.

Have I been too nice to you...

that you forgot your place?

If you don't give up still,

I'll take back your rewards!

Regardless of that,

I won't give up.

The little prince is innocent.

He shouldn't bear the consequence of his mother's action.

As the person in charge of the royal harem,

why can't you protect this child?

I don't understand.

Ye Ning Zhi.

Why are you sometimes clever...

and sometimes foolish?

If it is foolish to protect a 5-year-old child,

I acknowledge my folly.

Fine.

Then I shall punish you...

to stay in Yong De Palace for one more year.

What do you think?

I am willing to stay.

Summon Wei Guang!

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Noble Consort Fu angered His Majesty.

His Majesty will grant her poison wine tonight.

I'll go and beg His Majesty to spare Pang Kang.

Pang Kang is currently...

being escorted to the residence of Prince Nan Ping.

You and Ning Zhi may bring him back tonight.

From now on, the two of you...

will have to work hard for me.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Her Majesty said...

I'm sorry, Wei Guang.

Looks like I can't marry you yet.

You exchanged the chance to leave...

for the chance to save the little prince?

Even though it's a little stupid,

this is indeed what you'll do.

I will wait for you.

Let's pick up the little prince.

Alright.

Mother!

Kang Er!

Kang Er!

-Now let me see. -Mother.

I'm scared.

I'm scared.

Don't worry, Kang Er.

I'm here with you.

Wait.

Her Majesty said...

we can delay this for an hour.

Let the mother and son...

-spend a little more time together. -Yes.
