Embry! Get over here.

Keep that crowd back.

I don't want them to interfere.

I want Boem out of there and I want him out of there alive.

Got it?

Alright boys, you made your point.

Rayford comes out, we'll talk.

We can't go home in this, not after this.

When they called out Rayford like they done.

What about our families?

No! No!

What they is failing to recognize is,

we got nothing left to sit for.

Bullshit!

Not cameras.

That stupid pilot light was yellow...

Hey!

And now they want us to turn on you.

Time I suggest move along.

Rayford!

Think they'll let us walk?

Ray!

Ray, whichever way this goes.

There's something I need you to know.

Them years when we used to wander the creeks...

Pick up your rifles.

Here we go.

Let's go.

My children.

Why didn't you change?

This shirt's so dirty.

I wasn't thinking about it.

I'm sorry.

It's okay, I should have told you.

Let us all bow our heads and recognize this pivotal hour

that is upon us one final time.

Dear heavenly Father we come before you today

to ask forgiveness.

In these coming times we seek your protection.

It is no secret this great reckoning.

Your word says...

Sorry to interrupt Pastor.

Sheriff wishes to address us this morning.

I have decided

that we should have

a town council meeting right now.

The mill has burnt to the ground.

And there are no other employment opportunities

in this area.

I worked at that mill for 15 years.

Wake up, it's gone.

Your office told me to get a new job next town over.

Is Prattle shutting down?

Yes, Prattle is shutting down.

We couldn't save the mill...

Distract us from something we already know

to justify killing those men.

We could not save that mill.

You know, sheriff, it seems to me

you already have all the answers.

Can't you let us grieve?

Those people, they were our brothers, our husbands.

Your men...

My men took action ma'am.

You need to go to the truck.

What is she talking about?

You don't need to hear this.

Come on, you need to go to the truck.

Is that that fire was set intentionally.

And those people, those brothers and husbands

that you speak of, they sided with the perpetrator.

And then they violently attacked my men.

Those deputies done us a favor.

I heard it was Rayford Boem who organized that crew.

His whole life

causing nothing but trouble. Let's go.

- All round these parts. - I'll meet you at the truck.

Ivory, Ivory please, I didn't plan this.

- I can't, I can't. - Ivory!

Hey Rea!

You shouldn't take that.

It's just food.

Should we say something?

People died here.

Coming?

It is official.

Following the fire, the old Prattle Mill

will not be salvaged.

With more than two-thirds of the county now unemployed.

Sheriff Pascal urges you all to report any sightings

of the man accused, to his office, as the hunt

for Rayford Boem, presses on.

All of this, leaving many to question,

what will become of our little town.

The sheriff of course,

issuing his address this morning in...

¶ I must've been born ¶

¶ Stayin my hand ¶

Reagan please!

Can I ask you something?

Everyone's saying Pa's dead.

Will he come back?

I don't know.

You don't care.

You don't want him, you let him go.

Here we go.

Come on.

Okay, how about you guys play keep away from me.

Okay.

I'll try to get it.

Okay, let's try to get it.

But we have to stay close.

Takes a real man to wear that jacket.

You want to hear the second verse?

I bet you never heard it.

¶ As I was walking ¶

¶ Through the redwood forest ¶

¶ I saw above me an open sky ¶

Did you eat?

You could've kept him here, but you yell.

I yell!

- You yell and... - Bullshit Reagan!

Bad time?

I'm just gonna come right out and say it Ivory Joy.

Rayford led those men in that millstrike

yesterday morning.

Of the bodies, his weren't found.

Just the rifle, registered to his name.

No other clues.

Just the mess.

And you want me to turn him in?

Them boys.

What's your plan for them?

You leave them alone Sheriff!

I done about all I can do, Ivory Joy.

What do you want me to do?

Just turn my back and pretend none of this is happening?

This ain't our fault.

Rayford set that fire.

When you come back here, what was your plan?

You come back to Prattle just to watch it set alight?

That ain't nothing familiar.

When I catch him, I'm gonna have to put him down.

I won't be a part of that.

You just remember, Rayford chose to do what he done.

He left you raw, not me.

Can you cut it out with that thing.

Ray!

Not doing anything wrong.

You don't even play no good.

Dinner's not ready, go in the other room.

Not going in the other room, you go in the other room.

I'm gonna need you to go to the store.

Get some meat, it's burnt.

Reagan!

What! Why me?

Do you want to eat tonight?

No.

Good you get to do it anyway.

You mind taking Reagan to the store?

Yeah we're fine.

This whole out of town things pretty scary.

You ever need to talk.

Your mom says you're working a job now, is that true?

Was, stupid anyways.

Swept floors.

Job's a job.

Good as any other job if you take a lesson from it.

Sweeping floors?

Maybe not that job.

Did I ever tell you that time

that we almost went on a camping trip?

Your mother and I we'd known each other

since we were your age.

We had it all planned out.

Week in the country.

You were still young.

Your dad was still off playing his music.

Liked daisies your mother.

What you got there?

Come on, I'll buy.

I don't know what I'm doing Hank.

Sheriff keeps pressing us like we're hiding him.

I can't even keep him here.

You know I'd never do anything to hurt you Ivory Joy.

Sometimes, I find myself wishing he was dead.

How much easier would it be?

You've always been a good friend Hank.

Sheriff came by today.

Told Ma to clear out in a few days.

Where we gonna go?

I don't know Neely.

Hey Ray.

When we were back at the station.

Should we have said something?

Dad ain't dead Neely.

Hey Carl.

Can I get two packs of Reds, put it on my tab.

Out.

Pardon?

Shuttin' down tomorrow.

Where am I supposed to get my cigarettes?

Hi Jean.

Hey Ivory Joy.

Come on, let's go to the truck.

Give you more, but it's all I got.

No, it's fine.

Thanks.

So the kids have grown.

How old are they now?

14.

Well you're a lady.

Call me what you want.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You know Rayford, he liked Hudson, he liked him well.

It's okay.

Hud would've followed Rayford off a cliff

if he asked him to, I always knew that.

Just never thought he'd actually be gone.

And you get yourself, you know tricking yourself

into that perfect life.

You know?

Where you all headed?

Hud has a sister, Mayford County.

That old gal hasn't spoken to me in years.

But, those tend to be the ones that smother you with lovin'

when you get to the door.

You take care Ivory Joy.

You take care of them boys okay.

You tell 'em I say goodbye okay.

I will.

Maybe we'll see each other down that road.

Well hell, it's the only road left ain't it.

Promise me something..

I need you to cover for me.

Mom can't know.

Try it again.

¶ Probably going to die ¶

Hey I was thinking.

What do you say we all go do something fun

before we have to leave.

Yeah.

Yeah?

Yeah.

Where's your brother?

Neely.

Where's your brother?

I'll be right there.

Sorry it's so late.

You have cigarettes?

I'll take two packs of Reds.

Thanks.

Got our names put in?

Yeah.

You're first.

Ray.

Ray.

Shhhh.

Shhhh.

Soon as that cross that creek.

You're gonna help us get out of here.

Shhhh.

Good? Good?

Stand up son.

Let's go, come on let's go pick him up.

Put him under his arm, he's hurt real bad.

Get him up, get him up.

Not my son.

Stand up.

Not my son.

You shouldn't have come here.

Needed to know.

You're a damn fool just like your mother.

I need you to get in the damn truck.

The side door, hand it to me.

We need to go the hospital.

We ain't going to no damn hospital.

They'll pick us up when we get through the door.

We're going home boy, we're going home.

Our food ran out two days ago.

Help me get this buckle.

Help me buckle in.

We're going home, take me home!

Give it gas!

Give it gas!

Son you're gonna flood it.

Goddamn it, do you know how to drive?

Thanks.

You have a good time?

Yeah.

Go on.

Where were you?

Where were you?

Walk away, just like your father.

Well at least he was able to walk away.

Who else is up?

No one, just me.

I brought water.

You gonna help me get him inside.

What about mom?

I messed some things around,

took some food from the kitchen.

She meant to go to the store and get more.

When she does, we're gonna make our move.

Go on back to bed.

Moved a few things.

Hello?

You all know what time it is?

Hello?

Shit!

Neely!

Neely, get up.

Fraid they left the door open now the food's gone.

What?

You can clean the mess.

Come on.

Come on, come on!

Probably the Clunes,

always stealing other people's property.

Can't afford to buy their own things.

Reagan, where's that wheelchair at,

from when you broke your foot a few years back.

We got rid of it.

Okay, then grab his other arm, we gonna get him inside.

Everyone says they'll be making us leave soon.

Remember when we went to Mr. Taylor's pool parties

when you all was little.

And he had that dog.

He was a black lab,

but his tail was yellow. Yellow.

And he walked with a hitch.

Wily old thing.

Can't believe all the stores in town are closed.

I'm starving.

Neely go inside.

Go inside.

Go inside!

They're all avoiding me like it's contagious.

Rick, they never really knew you.

They never knew you, not like I did.

Do you know...

I can't save you right?

Yeah, I know.

You never really could.

Remember we used to wander that creek when we were kids.

Such a beautiful place.

One day you pushed me in those rocks

and you watched me start to drown.

But wait, I know you remember that.

For years I wanted to kill you.

I hated you after that.

I just, you know, you should have been there for me

as my big brother.

And I just, I needed that.

Not like you.

Then you left and played music for people all over,

singing about home.

Every day you were gone a little piece of the hate died.

I just need you to know that.

Get him some water.

What the hell do you think you're doing?

Reagan!

You pour that out right now.

Do what she says.

Just shut up.

He's a criminal.

He's dad's brother.

He abandoned us too.

Started at the mill just a few months ago,

just before all this went down.

Why'd you come back?

Why do you want to ask him that...

No you be quiet.

- You just asked me... - You don't need to speak.

You just asked me a question.

I changed my mind.

You change your mind too damn much.

I said shut up.

Get me a blanket.

He can't stay here Ray, he can't.

Get me a blanket.

No, Reagan.

No Reagan!

He can't stay.

Ray, he can't stay here.

Where do you want him to go Ivory?

Where do you want him to go?

He can't stay here.

He's gonna stay here, we're staying the night.

We're staying the night.

What about the deputies.

Don't worry about the deputies, I'll take care of that.

Everything's going to be just fine, alright.

I'm back, I ain't never gonna leave you all again.

Everything's going to be just fine.

Give me the blanket Ivory Joy.

You can sit down, I ain't an animal.

You got a girlfriend.

Go blind or something.

You got girls don't you?

You got girls?

How about your brother?

Did you start that fire?

Did you?

Did you start that fire?

You ought to not play with a pick.

Not the way I learnt anyway.

Play something for me.

Go on, get them sirens out of my head.

There you go.

Hold them strings down.

Took me a long time too.

Let's see it.

You know when you was a little boy,

I's on the road all the time.

Your mother used to call me up at night and say,

Rayford, I can't get these boys to bed for nothing.

She'd say, Reagan's went and hid under the bed.

He just want to hear you sing.

So I used to call up every night.

Have to play you this lullaby.

¶ Say listen little fella ¶

¶ There's no reason to hide ¶

¶ I'll hold you in my arms ¶

¶ Carry you through the night ¶

¶ Be your shield ¶

¶ If bad guys come ¶

¶ If a thundercloud claps ¶

¶ If a big tree falls ¶

¶ So listen little fella ¶

¶ There's no reason to fear ¶

¶ I hold you in my arms ¶

¶ Whisper in your ear ¶

¶ Be your shield ¶

¶ Forgot the words ¶

¶ Living on the road somewhere in Tennessee ¶

¶ So listen little fella ¶

¶ When your momma tells you ¶

¶ To finish all your supper ¶

¶ Tie your shoe ¶

¶ Cause I'd give a million dollars to hear you ¶

¶ Say that to me ¶

¶ I've been living on the road ¶

¶ Somewhere in Tennessee ¶

¶ So listen little fella ¶

¶ To your daddy's song ¶

¶ Help your momma wash the dishes ¶

¶ Don't do your brother wrong ¶

¶ Got to fall asleep ¶

¶ Before I count to five ¶

¶ One, two, three, four ¶

Goodnight little fella.

And your mom would pick the phone back up and say,

Rayford, I don't know how you do it.

Both of them boys are sound asleep.

Turned out to be my first hit song.

Do you think he knows,

that he's gonna die?

He's probably known that a long time.

What happened to them?

Dad and him.

I think...

I think he was the first person to shoot.

Do you ever feel like we're just being played with?

Like someone else out there is doing all this to us.

You don't have to whisper boys.

I'm wondering the same thing.

Go to sleep.

Neely.

I taught you how to ride too.

You'll be alright.

Good morning.

Shhh, shhh.

He died real peaceful.

Alright.

Alright.

You took our sons.

You took our sons to bury their uncle.

What's wrong with you?

What's wrong with you?

How could you?

How could you!

Stop, stop, stop.

Shhh, shhh!

I can't do this Ray.

Can't, I can't pretend everything's gonna be fine.

Do me a favor, take his shoes off.

First night we brought Neely home, you did the same thing.

I tried to get him out the clothes the hospital gave him.

Put him in your old clothes.

God, you were so jealous.

Stormed out of the room stomping around.

You were the baddest two-year old I have ever seen.

I called you back in.

Asked you to help me put on his onesie.

You sat right there, all teary-eyed,

trying to prove a point.

Your father, he has music.

First song he ever wrote, it was for you.

Quiet little song.

¶ Listen little fella ¶

¶ There's no reason to hide ¶

¶ I'll hold you nearby ¶

¶ I'll carry you through the night ¶

¶ I'll hold you nearby ¶

¶ And carry you through the night ¶

Howdy Hank.

Storms was coming.

You were so terrified.

Could you go get me a nine 16 wrench.

Come on down here and tighten this thing up.

Your momma tells me you're out here most mornings

working on this thing.

Yeah.

Why you spend so much time out here?

I dunno.

Cleaned about a damn pound of gunk off this thing.

Boy you don't talk too much.

Not got much to say.

You wanna know the real reason I bought this bike?

Yeah.

I was hoping that you and I could spend

a lot of time out here working on it.

You all took off before we had the chance.

Wasn't sound asleep.

Relax, I just want to pick a few things up.

Do you even want me anymore?

Funny, I was asked by a man one time

if living on the road was gonna be my destiny.

You know, nothing ahead, no baggage left behind.

I know I got a bad temper baby,

but I never hurt anybody in cold blood.

There's always a reason.

Rayford.

What did you do?

There was a man come by today.

Carrying flowers, a bag of groceries.

Hank.

I beat him to where he knew he'd been hit.

He was able to crawl back to his truck but...

No.

You go on up to bed, I'll handle this.

Rayford, show me your hands.

Show me your hands.

Show me your hands.

Do not move.

Do not move.

Get back in the house ma'am.

Get in the house.

You have the right to remain silent.

You have the right to an attorney.

The only reason I'm not taking you, is for those boys.

You can't keep hating me Reagan.

Stand where I'm standing.

If only he left.

I asked if we never have a chance,

a chance to make things right.

All I wanted to do was to go to sleep at night,

and when I woke up I'd know that you'd be there,

and everything would be okay.

I set your transfer to Melbourne county.

Pastor Phillips is recovering in the hospital up north.

I remember the first time I ever heard about you.

You were living over in Dayton.

Your song come on the radio one evening and I said,

that's somebody that sure can play.

And you could.

You had that mean picking,

but you never lost the breadth of the guitar.

I never played with a pick.

Convention never was your strong suit I guess.

But then one day, we look at ourselves in the mirror

and we realize, the only thing owed us, is what we put in.

Sheriff if I was to put out half the abuse

that was put into me I'd have burnt this town down

a long time ago.

You know I come back here, go to work up at the mill.

I figure I got one more chance.

Then that furnace blew, mill caught on fire.

I go to bed, wake up, next morning my face plastered

all over this town.

I made some mistakes, but you controlled what happened next.

Till that point, I was innocent.

You keep putting yourself on a path

that puts you in my sights.

Innocent's not the word I'd use.

We all on a path Sheriff.

But my wife, and boys.

You ain't mad enough to keep me from my family.

You fixed the bike.

You always walk away.

I don't know what to do.

Would you quit messing with that thing for one damn second.

What the fuck do you want me to say.

That we tried and it's the best we could do.

You never cared in the first place!

I never cared!

Damn you.

Now everyone's walking away.

I'm hungry man!

What the hell are you doing.

Aaargh.

Screw it, open this cell.

I'm gonna walk right through there.

You want to die right here, think about it.

I swore when you left this time, I would leave you.

You've sworn before.

You remember what you said to me the first night we met?

You been running through my mind all night,

so your feet must be tired.

Come on.

You don't get to do that this time.

Something else spectacularly charming or interesting.

This is not fair, come on.

You remember.

I've made so many mistakes after.

I told you from the start, even if I couldn't see

you was always gonna be the love that blinded me.

Now we've seen too much.

¶ Listen little fella ¶

¶ There's no reason to hide ¶
