Our story deals
with the army engineers

of the early West,

one of the most colorful groups
of men in our history.

In the year 1849,

thousands of immigrants swarmed
into the goldfields.

Now, the engineers had a job
of surveying fort sites,

Indian villages, locating
valuable mineral deposits,

planning your rail
and wagon routes,

harbors, and so on.

Now, the information gathered
by the engineers

was of great value
to many people.

To a few, it became a...
