I am a secondary school teacher.

I like to think
that I'm a cool teacher.

My kids have given

It is so important to teach teens
how to love themselves.

I struggle with it myself

that it's an easy thing to do.

My weight has put me off performing.

I don't-I don't fit
the mould of a...

standard performer.

It's taken a lot of courage for me
to be here tonight.

The push for me to be here
is to inspire my kids,

and for them to see that
they can be who they want to be.

for not just the big girls,

but for the big boys too.

I'm 18

and I'm from Castlemaine, Victoria.

I only started
singing very recently.

I'm a drummer
and I've drummed before

and I've drummed on a few stages.

However, not singing.

We're a fair way from Castlemaine.

Yeah, we are a fair bit
from Castlemaine.

I'm very nervous
because I don't know,

it's my first time
singing on a big stage,

like a stage, stage
and I don't know,

I-I really want to impress you guys.

I really want to impress the coaches

and I want to sing
the best I can for everyone.

Well, if you sing like
you sing in the shower,

I think you'll be good.

I think the shower
is my comfort zone.

You certainly get a lot of
practise in the shower.

I will try my absolute best
to make sure

that it soothes the ears
rather than breaks them.

So, I actually decided
to give singing a crack.

I was at music camp
with a bunch of my friends

and we were just
chilling in the room.

We were just playing band stuff.

Someone came in and they were like,
play some music, play some music.

I'll just yap my head off.

They came and they were like,
"Oh, my god, this is amazing."

I was like, "Whoa, like,

"this isn't singing
in the shower anymore."

Like, "What the hell
is happening here?

"It's actually working out."

And then since then,
I've just kind of been like,

on my own little journey.

And now I'm here.

picking up singing this year.

I was about nine

when I first got
into competitive race walking.

It is a bit like
what you see on 'Kath and Kim'.

It is like that.

But race walking
is an Olympic sport,

a very difficult Olympic sport.

I did lots of singing alongside
my race walking.

So, was singing, race walking,
singing, race walking.

I wasn't gonna follow
both paths forever.

I started realising
I love singing so much,

and that's the path
I want to go down.

That's what I want
to chase that feeling.

I've made this song

my own by kind of bringing it
back a little bit.

It's a bit more of a pared
back version.

Definitely risky
rearranging a song like this,

because it is very well known

that impressive low to high thing

and then kind of

doesn't show off
what you can really do.

always think about what songs

really highlight your strengths.

I was told no many more times
than I was told yes.

And luckily, I never gave up
on myself.

The first three years

I was in LA
trying to get a record deal,

every single label rejected me
multiple times.

I had a couple of record executives
tell me that I had no chance

in hell of ever getting
a record deal,

that my music was awful,
that my singing was terrible.

But I decided they were bullshit.
So, I kept going.

I was rejected on the basis of songs
like 'Endless Summer Nights

and 'Should've Known Better',
which became top five singles,

which became songs
that still get played on the radio,

that still make me money
35, 37 years later.

So, if you're pursuing something

and the answer you get is no,
maybe just take it as not yet.

No, doesn't necessarily mean no.
Sometimes no just means not yet.
