I guess since
the first of the month.

I'm really getting
very nervous about this.

I don't know if I should
maybe call the police
or something.

Why?

Hon, she's a big girl.

Welcome to Very Scary People.

I'm Donnie Wahlberg.

When Paula Godfrey answered
a "Help Wanted" ad
for a personal assistant,

it seemed like
a great opportunity.

Her job would include benefits
plus training and travel.

It sounded too
good to be true.

It was.

Almost as soon
as Paula started,

her family stopped
hearing from her.

Turns out her new boss was
not who she thought he was.

In reality, John Robinson
was a con man,

with a penchant for rough sex
that included bondage,
discipline and sadomasochism,

or BDSM.

This is part one
of the Slave Master.

On January 9th, 1985,

Lisa Stasi was staying
in a motel in Kansas City.

Lisa was 19 at the time

and had a daughter, Tiffany.

Tiffany at the time was
under six months of age.

That night, Lisa calls
her mother-in-law

and is crying and very upset.

And tells her mother-in-law,
"Why are you trying to take
my baby away?"

And the mother-in-law says,
"We're not trying to take
the baby away."

Lisa says, "They've
made me sign four
blank sheets of paper."

Her mother-in-law said,

"By no means,
do not sign anything.

No one's trying to take
your baby away from you."

And she heard extreme fear

in her
daughter-in-law's voice.

And then Lisa says,

"Here they come.
I've gotta go."

And that was the last
anyone ever heard from Lisa.

John Robinson had a...

I think a very unique
and interesting upbringing.

Just seemed like
a average kid.

Robinson
was born in late 1943
in Cicero, Illinois.

He grew up in a neighborhood
that was sort of renowned

for criminal behavior
because Al Capone had,
uh, an office there,

and there was a famous
shoot-out in the neighborhood.

It was part of the local
folklore really.

So, Robinson would have
absorbed some of that

and maybe he thought that
was something that might
help you get ahead in life.

He was the middle
child of five.

His father
worked as a machinist

and was known as a drinker,

sort of trudging off to work
and trudging back.

His mother was known
as the disciplinarian
in the family.

According to Robinson,
she was quite cold,

uh, especially when meting
out the discipline.

John Robinson
attended the Quigley
Preparatory school.

He wanted to attend seminary
to become a priest early on.

So, he was, in his youth,
quite a straight arrow.

John Robinson
was in the Boy Scouts,
became an Eagle Scout,

and that group travelled
to London to perform in front
of Queen Elizabeth and sing.

And backstage,
he met Judy Garland

who was also there
performing for the Queen.

And he went up
to Judy Garland and said,

"We Americans got
to stick together."

At which point, she,
surprisingly, gave him
a kiss on the cheek

and said, "You're right."

This was a very bold
move for a 13-year-old.

And later,
the encounter was
in theChicago Tribune.

I think it just showed
that John Robinson

was very personable
and a very likable kid.

He really had a way
of relating to people
and getting them to trust him.

Even in his
childhood though,
people said that he was a...

a little bit of a con man.

That he manipulated people,

that he did a lot of different
things to get what he wanted.

I doubt
whether anyone would
absolutely believe

that, uh, another person
could turn out to be

the kind of person that
John Robinson became.

From the very beginning,
much of what he
did was a scam.

And that scam was at first
theft and forgeries,

and later on it would
take a human toll.

In 1961, Robinson got
a job as an X-ray technician.

He created lot of diplomas
that said he was qualified.

But as far as I know,
they're all bogus.

Once he began working there,
it was noticed that he really
didn't know what he was doing.

He had
none of the training
or knowledge to do that.

He started stealing
from his employer so
the job didn't last very long.

This was just
the first in a long line
of future scams

he would become
involved with where he
faked his credentials,

got jobs he
wasn't qualified for,

and milked the companies
for various amounts of money.

And more often than not,
got away with it.

In the '60s, one
of Robinson's job was
with Dr. Wallace Graham.

Who was
the personal physician
to President Harry Truman.

Dr. Graham hired
him as an office manager

and very quickly money
started disappearing.

And it turned out that
Robinson had embezzled

a great deal of money
from him, almost putting
him out of business.

He embezzled at least
$30,000 from him.

He ended up being convicted
for that embezzlement,

and he was put on a probation.

So, while he was already
building this pattern
of criminal behavior,

he hadn't served any time.

The more he
got away with it,

the more he learnt he
could get away with crimes.

And he wouldn't stop.

And he sort of now
evolved into creating
these businesses of his own.

They were all sort of fronts
for his criminal activities.

In the late '70s,
Robinson started a company
called Hydro-Gro,

which was
a hydroponics company.

Growing plants indoors
under artificial lights.

He included a pamphlet
stating that he had
a far-reaching imagination.

In 1977, there was
a, uh, banquet to honor
the "Man of the Year"

in Kansas City.

And it was covered
by the local media including

our newspaper
The Kansas City Star.

And the mayor proclaimed
Robinson as "Man of the Year."

For his... philanthropic
efforts, I guess.

As it turns out,
it was a fake.

It was just some phony thing
that he concocted

and bamboozled everybody,
including the media.

He had created
a plaque for himself.

He had created
an event for himself.

And when they
found out about it,

everybody was
pretty mortified.

He was kind of the archetypal
small-time chiseler.

Most white-collar
criminals do not evolve
into violent criminals.

But his case is very
different from that.

By the '80s, he was evolving
into something else.

Up through 1984,

Robinson was really
viewed as a con man.

And con men don't
usually hurt anyone

because they're smart
enough to know that if
you actually hurt someone,

the penalty is gonna
be enhanced.

Which made it more
surprising when we found out

that he was also
a serial killer.

In the early '80s,
Robinson started yet
another company

called Equi-II

which was
a consulting company.

What he was
actually consulting,
we don't really know.

Equi-II was what
we would consider

a-- just a sham job.

He just used it as
a front to meet women.

It was at this time
that he hired a young woman
by the name of Paula Godfrey

to work as
a secretary for him.

Paula had just
graduated high school,
honors student,

she enjoyed figure skating.

By all accounts a good kid.

Whether he hired her
to help in his business
is really debatable.

It never appears that she ever
really did any work for him.

They had a fabulous
package of benefits,

financial and you were
gonna travel the world.

And this looked like
the golden opportunity.

The last we heard about Paula,
she called her grandmother

and informed her that she
was going to San Antonio

for business and she was
going to train down there.

And late
in the summer of '84,
Paula Godfrey went missing.

Her parents were
obviously concerned.

They made a missing
persons report

to the Overland Park
Police Department.

But soon after,
the family receives a letter

that is allegedly from Paula.

And in the letter she says,
"Hey, I'm travelling,
life is good.

John Robinson's
a wonderful person.

He's helped me
start a new life.

And I'm fine.
I'm just happy as can be."

This is to become a theme
that's repeated over and over.

Based on the fact
that letters showed up

indicating that she
was somewhere else,

it became more of a person
who may have just left,

which is not all
that uncommon.

The investigation
never really developed.

She's one
of several women that

nobody really knows
what happened to 'em.

And we'll probably
never really know

what happened to 'em.

Robinson was very adept
at manipulating people.

He looked
like a family man.

He dressed like the guy
next door that you see
pushing the lawn mower.

He didn't dress like
a guy that was out
looking for girls.

He didn't look scary,
like someone you had
to be careful of.

He did all these
monstrous things

but he looks like, you know,
Joe Schmoe next door.

In 1964, Robinson
met his wife Nancy.

And she became pregnant.

They ended up getting married.

They had four kids.

In the late '70s,
they moved to Olathe,

which is, uh, a suburb
of Kansas City,

probably, I don't know,
20-mile drive or so
from downtown Kansas City.

It was a upper scale
suburban neighborhood.

Ironically, he had
a reputation in the community

of being somewhat
of a family man.

He appeared to be
a caring, loving father,

he was involved in his
kids' activities,

he was involved in his church.

He took great pride
at Christmas as being
the neighborhood Santa Claus.

There are even pictures
of him online in the Santa
Claus costume.

And everybody thought he
was such a nice guy.

He did a lot
of things to make himself
look respectable.

But he didn't call that much
attention to himself.

I think part
of the reason why he got away
with what he did for so long

because he was able
to create this veneer
of a normal person.

And unfortunately
nothing could be
further from the truth.

He was able
to compartmentalize

that kind
of criminal activity,

that kind of horror that he's
inflicting on so many people,

at the end of the day, go home
and bounce a baby on his knee.

One thing that came
up over and over again
was John Robinson's contact

with women other
than his wife.

He gave the outward
appearance of being a devoted
family man, a father,

but he would have many
affairs with different women.

There was
always a string
of girlfriends on the side.

Sexual activity was a major
part of Robinson's lifestyle.

A area of interest

that he took on was
the BDSM lifestyle.

BDSM is bondage, discipline
and sadomasochism
in consensual relations.

Robinson referred
to himself as a Master.

That's a person who has
dominance over women.

The Master is somebody
who is the domineering figure
in the relationship that

tells you what to do,
when to do it,

what sexually to do,
all that kind of stuff.

And he was able
to find women that
were into that lifestyle.

There were
clubs in Kansas City
where you could engage in

those kinds of activities
if you wanted to.

He was a man who was 5'9".

He was pudgy.

He was not a great
physical presence.

But this notion of being
this ultramasculine,
dominant male,

you know, clearly appealed
to his psyche.

He was drifting further
and further into not only

small financial scams
and murder,

but these adventures
into these darker realms
of the sexual underground.

During the day, he would
be out doing his thing,
scam type things,

BDSM activities,
hooking up with all
these women.

At night, he would go home,
usually about five o'clock,

and be home the rest
of the evening.

We referred
to him as John Walton

when he wasn't involved
with his other activities.

He was always there
with Nancy at supper.

One
of the unusual
aspects of it

is that neither he nor
his wife, who knew
about some of these affairs,

seemed to have any
interest in getting divorced.

Robinson sort of needed
that-- that stability
in this part of his life

to be really aberrant
in another part of his life.

Sheila and Debbie Faith
were a mother and daughter
that lived in Colorado.

Sheila Faith was
a middle-aged woman.

Her daughter, Debbie,

was disabled
and wheelchair-bound.

In 1994,

Robinson meets Sheila.

He tells her, you know,
great things about himself,

and what a businessman he is.

He portrayed himself pretty
much always the same way.

The gentleman farmer,
he's wealthy, he owns
a lot of businesses.

He would often times
use the picture of him

standing in that field
with his foot up on a stump,

talking about all this
property he owned and how
wealthy he was and...

Just a super nice guy.

And Robinson offered
Sheila the chance to come

to the Kansas City area and

that he would take care
of her and her daughter.

What he was
extremely good at, of course,

was finding
the vulnerabilities in people,
zeroing in on them,

exploiting them
and getting them

to do what he wanted to do.

He would promise
everything and anything

depending on what
the needs were of his victims.

Sheila had told
her friends that she had
met her dream man,

that he was gonna take
them on an extended cruise.

She was very excited
about going to Kansas City.

He actually drove all
night to Pueblo, Colorado
and picked them up

and brought them
back with him.

The only thing we know
about Sheila and Debbie Faith

is they arrived
in Kansas City area

and were never seen again.

John Robinson dodged
some suspicion because

Sheila and Debbie Faith
were never reported missing.

We always suspected
that was more than anything
else a money scam for him.

They received Social
Security disability benefits
from the federal government.

He continues to collect
their benefits for many
years after that.

He would
collect on their Social
Security checks

in the amount of $80,000.

He almost had a constant
stream of incomes from people
he'd scammed or killed.

This guy would do
anything for a buck.

And he doesn't care who
he hurts or what kind of
position they are in in life.

If it benefits him,
it's a good deal.

I think
Robinson was able to get
away with his crimes

because he picked
victims that didn't have
a lot going for them

and would have less people
looking for them.

He had a tendency to find
women at their lowest point.

Every single one of them
had a marked vulnerability.

And he knew it,
and he found it,
and he seized upon it.

They didn't all look the same,

they weren't all
the same scam,

but that was the one
thing he knew how to do.

To find vulnerability
and exploit it.

Here comes
their knight in shining
armor or so they think,

he'll use them
for a while and then...

kill 'em.

Welcome back
to Very Scary People.

John Robinson found some
victims by posting fake jobs.

Others by luring them
with promises of love
and financial support.

In 1984, he set his sights

on a new and especially
vulnerable group
of potential victims.

Young, unwed mothers.

In December of 1984,
I was District Supervisor

for the Missouri Board
of Probation and Parole...

...and I got a call

from an organization
known as Birthright.

And, uh, Birthright
was a program

that tried to help young girls
who were pregnant

find a way to keep the baby.

They told me that they had
been contacted by Robinson

who wanted to know
if they had any young
girls that needed help.

He started an organization

called Kansas City Outreach

that supposedly was charity
to help young women,
single mothers

who needed a leg up
in the world.

John Robinson
and his scams would gravitate

toward fields that
looked very benevolent.

Other serial killers have done
these same kinds of things.

Ted Bundy, for example, worked
in a suicide hotline.

Dennis Rader,
the BTK serial killer,

was a president of his church.

Robinson was going
to different hospitals

and trying to get
them to sign on

to this outreach program

for unwed mothers

that he would put
up in apartments
and take care of.

After receiving
the call, I began

looking into his background.

I was immediately convinced
that he was up to no good.

One of my early thoughts

when I learned that
he was seeking out
young women with babies

was that he potentially was

going to sell the baby.

And possibly use the mother
to sell into white slavery.

I had contacted the FBI
to see if they were aware

of any baby selling operations
in the Kansas City area,

and they were not.

Stephen Haymes
is a very interesting

and important part
of the story in many ways

because he was the first
person in law enforcement

that the red flags
sort of went out.

Stephen Haymes
knew instinctively

that something about
Robinson was wrong,

something was dangerous.

I'm still not

thinking that-- that
he's a murderer at that point,

at least with his own hand.

Lisa Stasi
was the next individual

encountered by John Robinson.

Lisa married a man

and together, they had
a baby, Tiffany.

The marriage was rocky,
did not work out.

They separated
and, uh, her husband

re-enlisted in the military
and-- and left.

She, uh, made contact
with a hospital,

and when they learned
about the Kansas City
Outreach Program,

thought it was a perfect
program for Lisa.

It seemed like a legitimate

outreach organization.

Lisa was promised
a job, education,

and she thought
she would be providing

a better life for her
and her young daughter.

He put her up in a hotel
in Overland Park,

told her that he was gonna
help her start a new life.

On January 9, 1985,
Lisa went to visit

her sister-in-law,
Kathy Klinginsmith.

And it was a very, very
vicious snowstorm going on.

While she was there,
Robinson went back

to the hotel, found out
that she was not there.

And in the middle
of a horrible snowstorm,

Robinson shows up
at the sister-in-law's home

and is upset that Lisa
had left the motel.

He demanded that
she and the baby, Tiffany,

leave with him immediately.

Kathy Klinginsmith would
later say in court

that she saw pure evil
in his eyes that day.

So he collects
Lisa and Tiffany

leaving behind her car,

baby food, diapers,

and whisked them away.

A short time later,

Lisa makes that call
to her mother-in-law

about people wanting
to take her baby.

That last
conversation, you know,

"They've made me sign
four blank sheets of paper."

Lisa Stasi
was never seen again.

After Lisa
goes missing,

the mother-in-law
receives a letter.

It's typed.

Lisa's brother also
receives a similar letter,

as does a shelter.

There were three letters
that were sent

and all three
were very generic.

One of the letters
from Lisa said,

"Thank you for all your help.
I do really appreciate it.

I've decided
to leave Kansas City

and try to make a new life
for myself and Tiffany.

She deserves a real mother

who works
and takes care of her."

At the bottom, it was signed
Lisa Elledge Stasi.

Their family
really didn't buy into it

because the letters
were so generic.

It didn't sound like her

and you don't sign
your official name

including your middle name
to your family members.

The Overland Park
police department
was contacted

about her disappearance.

But again, there wasn't
enough to really launch
an investigation.

At this point,
there was no sign
of foul play.

So like many cases
of a disappearing person

with some reason
to believe that they
simply left on their own,

the case went no further.

On January 10
of 1985,

I decided I had enough

information looking
into his background

that I wanted
to confront him directly

about what was going on.
At that point,

I still don't know
about Lisa and Tiffany.

Ironically, the letter
I sent on January 10

is also the same day
that Lisa Stasi

and baby Tiffany
were last seen.

I've often wondered
if I would have

made my direct contact
with him,

you know,
a week or two earlier,

maybe she wouldn't
have gone missing.

I mean, those are
the sort of, uh, regrets
that you always have.

There was a common
thread with all these women.

The last time anybody
had seen 'em,

they all become involved
with John Robinson.

None of 'em ever been seen
again after that involvement.

There was no activity,
no credit card activity,

no phone activity, nothing
from any of these women.

Most of the cases, as soon
as John Robinson
was contacted,

by either a family member
or the police,

then what I would call
a cover-up started.

He had
a very similar pattern

for most of his victims.
He would get these ladies

convinced that he was getting
ready to take 'em on a trip.

And he would say to them,
"You know, you're gonna be

traveling all the time.
You're gonna wanna
contact your relatives.

So why don't you pre-write
some letters right now?

And the ones that
you don't pre-write,

would you sign your signature
to the bottom of these

pages of stationery?"

So he could mail 'em while
they're traveling the world.

It was a good way
of keeping families

and law enforcement at bay.

And he used it over and over
again in the future.

He was very adapt
at doing things

to throw off an investigation.

Steve Haymes
was feeling uneasy

about Robinson
and these missing women.

Stephen Haymes
sent a letter to Robinson

saying he wanted to come in

to his office
to meet with him.

Robinson shows up
at my office on the 24th.

Here's this, uh, rather
ordinary looking man.

Very business man looking.
He's...

not a dangerous looking
person at all.

Not a dangerous acting person.

He's got a smile on his face
and you can tell

he's-- he's just trying
to lure you in to his con.

Robinson wants to know
what's going on.

I talk to him about
the birthright situation.

They had been contacted
by Robinson.

Wanted to know if they
had any young girls
that needed help.

And he says, "Oh, yeah,
that's-- that's true.

You know, we are
a group of businessmen.

We just wanted to give
back to the community."

I'm telling him
this doesn't make any sense.

Are you incorporated?
You know,
is it not for profit?

"Well, no,
we haven't done that.

I've got an attorney
that's working on that."

One of the interesting
things about Robinson

is, is that, you know,
he never admits defeat.

You can never back him
into the corner,

and he'll say, "Oh,
okay, you got me."

John Robinson
lied as a lifestyle.

He was one of those people
who's just gonna tell you

lies to tell you the truth.

Even if it was easier
to tell you the truth.

It's almost a pathological

thing with him.

When you confront him

with the facts that--
that show that he's lying,

he says, "Oh, well, you know,
that's just partially true."

And then immediately
spins a new yarn about

how, you know, "This is really
what happened,"

which requires that
you go back

and reinvestigate everything.

So it was very frustrating.

Nothing is easy
with John Robinson.

Haymes
was not comfortable

with the answers that
Robinson was giving him.

As such felt it was necessary

I gotta do something
with this guy.

After my first contact with--

face-to-face with Robinson
in January of '85,

I was involved almost daily
in investigating him.

Haymes spent
the next six months

looking into
Robinson's background.

I contacted
the social workers

at the hospital about
the Kansas City
Outreach Program,

and they told me that one girl
that had been referred to him,

Lisa Stasi,
and her baby, Tiffany,

had not been seen
for some time.

I learned more and more
about his criminal activity

and it's just
going on everywhere.

Was certainly convinced
that he was up to no good.

There's this obvious string
of-- of young girls

that have gone missing.

But we still don't know
at that time

what's happening to them,

where they are, were they
killed by Robinson,

were they sold
into white slavery?

If they were killed, were they
killed by his own hand?

There's more unanswered
questions at that point
than there are answers.

The next best thing was
to get him off the street.

It's kind of the--
the Al Capone thing.

If you can't get him
for what Capone did,

you get him
for income tax evasion.

The goal was really
to get him off the streets

for anything that we could.

In Johnson County, Kansas,

the police were investigating
Robinson for fraud.

He would be arrested for that,

he would be sent
to trial for that,

and he would be
convicted of fraud

in 1987.

And he would then serve
the next six years

in prison in Kansas.

I was relieved that
he couldn't victimize
any other young women.

But before he went
to prison, he placed this ad

in a newspaper
asking for help.

And a young woman
by the name

of Catherine Clampitt
showed up.

Catherine Clampitt
was a young, somewhat

troubled young girl.

Catherine's family
described her as being

a very intelligent young lady.

Had a bit of a wild side,
maybe adventurous side.

Clampitt had a young child
that she left with her parents

when she came up here
to the Kansas City area.

She answered a job
ad that he had put out

saying looking for somebody
that was interested

in a great job

with travel, new wardrobe.

The kind of thing that,
you know, any young person

might look at and go,
"Wow, this sounds great."

Robinson
convinced her that,

you know, he really had
a-- a good job for her.

After she
answered that ad,

she was never seen again.

Letters started
showing up and they
were hand-written

by Catherine Clampitt.

She enquired about her kid,
she had a kid.

She would ask questions
in the letters,

saying that she was traveling
but it was suspicious

because those letters all came
from the Kansas City area.

Even after
the Kansas conviction,

you would think
that he would be

at least trying to be
at his best behavior.

But he's not.

I never met
anybody that didn't hate
John Robinson.

And I also
did not find anybody

that he ever
told the truth to.

I don't think you could
probably trust anything

that came out of his mouth.

I've heard
that somebody
is a silver tongued devil,

which, in his case,
is pretty apt.

In the late 1980s,
John Robinson
is sentenced to prison.

And at the prison, he meets

a woman by the name
of Beverly Bonner

who worked
in the prison library

and was married
to the prison doctor.

Robinson became very,
very friendly with her.

In fact, he manipulated her
while he was in prison,

and they soon started
an affair actually.

In 1993, John Robinson

was released from prison.

And Beverly decides
that she's going
to leave her husband

and run off with this guy.

She got divorced,

moved up here to be with him.

He made her
an officer in his business.

He also opened a couple
credit cards under her name.

And then,
she also disappeared.

Her family
started receiving letters

saying, "Having
a great time in Europe."

And they were postmarked
from France and Switzerland.

No one ever questioned
that she wasn't
in the Kansas City area.

They just assumed
she was off traveling

because of these
postmarked envelopes.

In Beverly Bonner's case,

her son died.

And yet, she never
wrote a word about it.

Bonner had
maintenance payments

routinely coming to her from
her ex-husband, the doctor,

as part
of the divorce package.

Robinson has those
sent to a post office box

in Olathe, Kansas,

where he then collects them
and cashes them.

Robinson continued
to cash those checks

for the next 18 months,

which would have been
at least $18,000.

He's always looking for a buck
no matter how he can get it.

It's interesting
that through
his criminal career,

money was a factor.

If you think about
a lot of serial killers,

you don't often have money
as a component of that.

From the very beginning,
he was determined

to take money from people
by illegal and illicit means.

When Robinson
was released from prison,

he lived in Missouri,

just south of Kansas City

in a trailer that his wife
had rented there.

That was not within
the jurisdiction

of my district office.

But I held his file back
in my desk drawer.

I would review
the file periodically.

Was there anything
I missed? You know, what--

What more could I do?

What more could I investigate?

In the '90s,
the Internet became

an incredible part
of our everyday life.

The irony was
that Robinson learned

about the Internet
while he was in prison.

He was very, very smart

and he had
a very good head for it.

He used to see Internet
to meet and attract women.

For a long time,
he'd be involved

in BDSM and sadomasochism,

and he gravitated
towards those chat rooms.

He actually referred
to himself as Slave Master.

He had
five computers set up

and with some
or all of those computers,

he was hunting

for new women
to victimize in some way.

This guy would connect
with women all over America.

It is commonly
understood

that he was
the first serial killer

to use the Internet
as a stalking ground
for finding victims.

Once he got
his hands on computers,

the whole game changed
and expanded for Robinson.

And he would now use that

in the evolution
of his criminal career.

After about
a decade of instances

where women met John Robinson
and then disappeared,

it's still happening.

He told me that
he had a job with
the state department

and that would
also be the reason

why he was away all the time.

Robinson met Suzette
through an online chat room.

On March 1,
she totally disappeared.

I don't
know if I should

maybe call the police
to jump in.

Why?

They began putting
the pieces together.

This guy is a--
a serial killer.

How much crazier
can this thing be?

When we lifted it
back up, we saw

a little red streak

of red liquid going down
the side of the barrel.

He is just
evil itself.

I mean,
