"Very scary people."

I'm Donnie Wahlberg.

Alaska is known for its natural
beauty and vast wilderness.

It's been said that two kinds
of people end up there --

people running
to something

and people running away
from something.

In 2012, on a cold winter's
night in Anchorage,

a teenage girl finishing her
shift at a local coffee stand

came face-to-face
with such a person --

a malevolent,
vile someone,

who had only one thing
on his mind.

This is
The Cross Country Killer.

♪♪

Eaton: A lot of people don't
realize how huge Alaska is.

It's vast,
and beautiful.

It's very transient.

There's a huge oil and gas
industry there,

and so, you have people
coming and going.

People want something different,
generally, who go to Alaska.

And there certainly are
a large number

who go to start
a new life,

who are running away
from something.

♪♪

Hunter: On the night
of February 1st, 2012,

Samantha Koenig was working at
the Common Grounds coffee stand.

Michelle: It was getting closer
to her shift being off.

She was supposed to be picked up
by her boyfriend.

Hendricks:
Samantha was just 18 years old,
and a high school senior.

Going to school in Anchorage,
raised in Anchorage,

living with her dad
and Duane, her boyfriend.

Her whole life ahead of her,
looking forward to the future.

Samantha was getting ready
to close at the coffee shop,

as she normally did,
going through her routine.

Meanwhile, a man was sitting
in the parking lot,

scoping out the area.

And he knew,
because he had a police scanner,

that there wasn't much activity
in the area.

Jeff: He had scoped out
the Common Grounds coffee shop

because it was
open later.

That particular coffee shop
was in a parking lot.

And between the coffee shop
and the main road

was a huge pile of snow
because,

in February, it's already
snowed for several months.

And those people
that own those lots

pile all the snow
in the parking lot.

So, there's a barrier between
the coffee shop and the street.

Hunter:
Shortly before it closed,

a little bit before 8:00
that night,

that man walked up
to the order area,

and ordered a coffee
from her.

Samantha turned around
to start making the order,

and when she turned back around
to give him the order,

the man had a gun
pointing at her.

Hendricks: What we can see
on the surveillance footage

is Samantha
puts her arms up.

He said,
"This is a robbery.

Turn the lights off."

And you see the surveillance
footage go dark.

It is then he tells Samantha
to get on her knees.

Jeff: And he jumps through
the window.

We don't see it outside,
but we can see it inside.

In, like, almost one leap,
he just comes into the window.

And she's startled,
at that point.

But then, it almost seems
like things calm down,

and she appears to be
very cooperative

in whatever it is
that he's saying.

There's no sound to the video,
but he's obviously binding her.

He's in there a long time
before they leave --

like, 10 minutes.

That's a long time
for a total stranger

who's there to kidnap somebody,
and get them out of there,

because another customer
could have pulled up.

But he told her that he had
a scanner in his ear,

with a mic
and earpiece in it --

which he did --

and that he was listening to
the police scanner,

and if he heard the police
being dispatched to them,

that he would
kill her.

Above the light switch
for the lights for the kiosk

was the alarm,

which would have sent a signal
to the police.

But he had frightened her enough
with his threats of harm

she did not push
the alarm.

Hunter: There were businesses
nearby.

The parking lots had cars
in them.

People were walking
to and from their cars.

And despite all that,
he took Samantha Koenig

out of the Common Grounds
coffee stand,

and walked with her
at gunpoint.

He had a gun hidden,
but pointed against her ribs.

And he walked with her,
and told her to just act like

that they were
boyfriend/girlfriend,

and that she was a little tipsy
from drinking too much,

and he was just helping her
get to the car.

Hendricks:
The outdoor footage shows them
walking away from the kiosk.

And soon after that, they slowly
walk away out of the frame.

As they walked,
Samantha tried to get away.

She bolted from him,
ran away,

but he quickly ran her down,
and tackled her.

Made it pretty clear that,
if she tried it again,

it wasn't gonna end well
for her.

After that, he was able to
get her back to his vehicle,

and they drove away.

Chacon: You always hope that
it's just a robbery

in that kind
of situation,

that they are there
just for the money.

But she's led away from there,
and taken, basically,

kidnapped,
at that point.

Michelle: I think everybody
has an assumption

of what they think they would do
in that situation.

I've watched the video
over and over and over again,

and I don't know if I could do
what she did.

She was calm, collected, she did
exactly what he told her to do.

I don't know if I could be
that strong.

And the thing is, everybody,
like, makes assumption

of what they think they would do
in that situation.

She did everything right.

Duane, her boyfriend,
that night,

was supposed to
pick her up,

and arrives at the kiosk
a little bit late.

When he shows up,
it's completely dark,

which is odd
for the kiosk.

He noticed that napkins
are all over the floor,

senses something
is off.

Doesn't know what it is,
but decides to leave.

And he figured that
his girlfriend, Samantha,

got a ride home
from someone else.

Hunter: After he had
Samantha Koenig in his car,

and had her locked up in there,
he came up with a story

that he was just gonna
hold her for ransom,

and that, once her family paid,
everything would be fine,

and that he would
let her go.

He has her zip-tied
in the truck.

They drive around
for a while,

waiting for his girlfriend
to go to bed at home,

so that he could take
Samantha home.

Hendricks: They were driving
around, when he realizes

that Samantha doesn't have
her cellphone.

So, he drives back to
the kiosk,

to retrieve
Samantha's cellphone,

which was inside.

Hunter: One of the things
he did with it was

he sent out some text messages
to her boyfriend,

trying to make it seem like
everything was fine,

that it was actually
Samantha

that was the one
sending these texts.

And she was
basically saying,

"I'm gonna stay with
my friends for a little while.

I'll get back in touch
with you later."

Jeff: The police were contacted
the next afternoon

that something
had happened.

It basically looked
like someone

just literally walked out
of their shift.

I started kind of noticing
a little bit more things.

I looked in
my register.

I looked for the money that goes
in my register.

It was gone.

Then, I looked in
our deposit bags.

They were all gone.

Jeff: That employee called
the owner, and said,

"There's no money
for startup."

And the owner just thought
Samantha had made a mistake.

And that's when the owner
then started investigating

what happened to her money
and Samantha.

Hendricks:
She goes straight to the video,
watches for a few minutes --

it's 17 minutes long --

and notices that something
is clearly wrong.

So, the owner calls police,
and says,

"This is what happened.
You have to see this footage.

Something may be wrong
with Samantha."

And early on, the police
believed she may have known

the person who jumped into
that window,

because of the conversation
back and forth.

By this time, it'd been released
that she was taken by gunpoint.

They had not released
the video.

And people still made
the comment of,

"Well, maybe she knew him.

Maybe it's an old jilted
ex-boyfriend."

No.

This was so calculated
that...

Mnh-mnh.
She didn't know him.

And that was the thing
I kept trying to get across.

That's one of the things
that her father wanted across.

This isn't normal.

This isn't his daughter's
behavior.

She doesn't just leave
with somebody.

Hendricks: At one point,
they even thought it was payback

for maybe something
that her father did.

Jeff:
With any investigation,

leads start coming
out of the woodwork.

We were getting all kinds
of information,

as far as people that
could have been involved,

drug money being owed --
which ended up not being true --

motorcycle gangs
being responsible.

And we were having to follow up
on all of those things.

We had our hands full
with that,

as well as trying to
find Samantha.

Man: Two of us lift,
and one with this.

Michelle: We just started
searching, looking at places.

People helped.

Nothing turned up.
Still didn't know where she was.

Samantha was last wearing
a pair of furry, black boots.

Michelle: James, Samantha's dad,
he was there for her friends.

He was there for
her cousins.

He was tremendously there
for her boyfriend,

tremendously there
for her.

He did not stop.

I want to thank you so much
for coming out,

and showing support,
and bringing Samantha home.

Eaton:
They had a big candlelight vigil
in downtown Anchorage.

I remember
going to that.

And I couldn't believe
how many people showed up.

[ Crowd singing ]

There were people singing,
and people holding candles.

And they filled up
the whole town square.

Everyone hoping that
she would eventually turn up.

Everybody was a suspect
in this.

We didn't know what had happened
for sure.

And so, we were investigating
everybody that knew her.

Young Woman: Everyone seemed to
really like her.

She was really nice.
She was really upbeat.

And she had a good
personality,

and she seemed like
a really nice girl.

Hunter: Samantha was described
as being a very sweet person.

She had a lot of friends.

She had a boyfriend.

Please bring her back to us.
I'm begging you.

Michelle: What I know about
Samantha Koenig

is primarily from her friends,
her family,

her boyfriend at the time --
open, honest, funny, protective,

just an amazing person,
and an amazing friend.

She's just an amazing,
hilarious, funny person,

and was absolutely
her father's pride and joy.

They were very,
very, very close.

He took it extremely personal
that somebody took her.

Eaton: She was just
an 18-year-old girl.

She was at the beginning of her
life, and she disappeared.

How did this happen?

Eaton: Sometimes,
in these cases,

somebody would turn up
after a few days.

Who knows why they disappeared
for a few days.

Maybe they wanted
to get away,

or they went on a trip,
and didn't tell people.

People would turn up.

So, we thought maybe
she would, too.

Hendricks;
18-year-old Samantha Koenig
had been taken from

the coffee stand
where she works.

Family, friends, and police
had no idea

who would want to take her,
and why.

Jeff: When he got home
with Samantha,

he put Samantha in a shed
that was in the driveway.

It was his workshop area.

He again threatened her.

He turned a radio on.
He had some music playing.

And just to give you a picture,
the houses are very close

in the neighborhood
that he lives in.

And so, there was a house
within 15 feet of that shed.

But he had her in the shed.
He restrained her.

He tells her that he is wanting
to get money from her family.

She tells him that her family
doesn't have money.

Hunter: He learned that she had
a debit card,

but she didn't have it
with her.

It was in her purse,
which was back in her truck,

back at her house, parked out on
the street outside her house.

So, he drove, by himself,
over to Samantha's house,

and saw her truck sitting there,
like she said.

And he opened the door,
got in the truck,

and retrieved her purse.

Samantha's boyfriend, Duane,
waited up at the house,

hoping that Samantha
would come home.

Hunter:
Her boyfriend happened to be
standing outside the house,

saw this dark figure
go into the truck.

And he shouted out.

Duane turned around,
and ran back into

Mr. Koenig's house,
and got him.

And by the time Mr. Koenig
came out, he was already gone,

with the debit card and the I.D
for Samantha.

Michelle: I was shocked that
he had actually done that,

that he had gone over
to her house.

If everything would have aligned
a little bit better

than what they were,
Duane might have caught him.

Hunter:
After he had taken possession
of her bank debit card,

he returned back
to the shed

that he had next to his house
in the driveway.

He took a Polaroid
of her,

and he had a recent newspaper
next to her,

kind of a proof-of-life
type photograph.

Hendricks:
He photocopied the photo,

writing out a ransom note
in a typewriter

that he had
recently purchased --

a ransom note
demanding $30,000.

He then goes to
Connors Park,

putting that ransom note
underneath a missing dog poster.

Hunter: After he put
the ransom note in the park,

he sent a text,
using Samantha's phone,

to Samantha's boyfriend.

Michelle: The night that he sent
the text message,

it was the day before
the fundraiser that myself

and a few other ladies
helped create.

We were meeting
at a restaurant.

And then, her boyfriend, Duane,
just kind of goes sheet white.

And he walks over
with his phone,

and he shows it to James,
and the room just --

the air almost just gets
sucked out of the room,

because now there's
a possible link.

There's something.

A text from Samantha's phone,
that, in essence said,

"Under a picture
at Connors Park.

Ain't she purty?"

Michelle: And those of us
born and raised here

knew where he
was talking about.

Took off to where
the ransom note was.

Jeff: At the entrance
to the park,

there's a sign
that has local events on it,

news about local events.

And there was a picture of
a missing dog.

And underneath that, on one of
the pins that was holding it up,

was a plastic bag.

So, I walk over
to the bulletin board,

and I lift everything up,

and I'm staring at
a wrapped Ziploc bag

with what looks to be a Polaroid
and a letter of some sort in it.

The family went there first,
and then called us from there.

And then, of course, we did
a crime scene team call-out,

to look for tire prints,
and footprints,

and fingerprints,

and everything associated with
that investigation.

And that was...

the start
of what we hoped

would have been the end
of this nightmare.

When he requested a ransom,
that opened a dialogue.

And now,
you have a dialogue.

And even if the dialogue is
putting money into the account,

and him accessing it
through some ATM,

that's good for
law enforcement.

That's a chance we have
to catch him.

We can track him.

Jeff: At that point,
obviously,

the investigation ratcheted up
tremendously.

We believed that the note
was from whomever it was

that had Samantha.

And so, we knew that there was
a real possibility

that she was in
real danger.

Michelle: After the note was
discovered, the next day,

I know that everybody
was called in.

I know Duane was called in.
I know James was called in.

I do know he was shown
the photo,

and I know he was shown
the letter.

What it says, he never told me,
and I didn't ask.

Everybody that was working on
the case was reading the note,

trying to analyze it,
if we could,

to figure out
what it meant,

if it would give us any clues
about who had written it,

where she was,
and those kinds of things.

And the note does specifically
tell us the bank account,

the card number,

that he wanted money
put in that.

Michelle: That next few days
were just waiting,

waiting to see what
the next move would be.

Jeff: We were working 16,
18-hour days,

doing what we were doing.

Everybody believed that Samantha
was still alive.

Once the ransom note was found,
and the public,

the community, learned about
what was going on,

there was a widespread
outpouring of support

for James Koenig

for trying to get his daughter
back safely.

So, there were a lot of
donations made to this fund.

Some of the funds
were actually deposited

into Samantha's account,

so that her abductor
could access the funds,

in the hopes that she
would be returned safely.

A few days later, Mr. Koenig
puts $5,000 into the account.

We had a trace,
basically, on the card,

so that, if the card was used,
we would be notified.

That evening, a few hours later,
somebody made a withdrawal.

The first withdrawal,
just before midnight,

a few minutes
before midnight,

and then a second withdrawal
a few minutes after midnight,

so there would be
the two different days.

He takes out $500
at two separate stops.

Michelle:
He was on borrowed time, only
because he had her debit card,

and I'm in
the financial business,

so I knew we were going to
close in sometime,

and then, maybe, she would be
with him, alive,

and then,
we'd have her back.

Welcome back to
"Very Scary People."

An unknown man kidnaps
18-year-old Samantha Koenig

from a coffee stand
in Anchorage, Alaska,

and vanishes
without a trace.

But authorities believe
this may not be the first time

he's done something
like this.

Eight months earlier, on the
other side of the country,

in the town of Essex, Vermont,
detectives are investigating

another missing-persons case
with eerie similarities.

Hunter:
Bill and Lorraine Currier
were a married couple

living in Essex,
a small town in Vermont.

Essex is one of the
closer-knit communities

in the greater
Burlington area.

Burlington, Vermont itself
is a fairly small

largest city in a state.

You've got Burlington
right on the shores of the lake,

and so, hemmed in on this side
by lake Champlain,

and then New York and
the Adirondacks in the distance,

all around Burlington

are all of these various
suburban communities.

Hunter: Bill was 49 years old.
Lorraine was 55.

They'd been married
for quite a long time.

Jennifer:
They were together forever.

They were like two peas
in a pod.

Bill was Bill, and he just loved
hugs, and he was always happy.

Like, his life
was just happy.

Lorraine,
she was the sweetest.

Oh, my God,
she just was like a ball of joy.

Hunter: Bill worked as an animal
care technician

at the University
of Vermont.

Lorraine worked in the medical
field there, locally.

Jennifer:
They were hard workers.

They've always been
hard workers.

I was one of the city editors
at the Burlington free press.

I got a call from my boss,
the managing editor at the time,

who said, "We've got this
really weird thing going on."

Jennifer:
Bill never missed work.

Even if he was sick,
he never missed work.

Like, never, ever,
ever, ever, ever.

Like, neither of them.

But he missed work.

And they called
the family.

Silverman:
I don't think that they were
particularly well known

outside of their jobs

and their own intimate
circle of friends,

but those who knew them
loved them a great deal.

I think they were
well-respected,

well-loved
with their colleagues,

with their friends,
with their families.

They were known for being,
I think, very quiet.

You know, I think they liked
to spend a lot of time

with each other.

And they were known as
very dedicated employees.

These were folks who did not
miss a day of work.

And if there was ever
any occasion

that they were unable
to be at work,

they wouldn't just
no-show.

So, the fact that they no-call
no-showed,

that, right there,
day one,

was an indicator of something
that was so unlike them

that everyone who knew them,
everyone who worked with them,

was immediately worried
about them.

Hunter:
When the police arrived at Bill
and Lorraine Currier's house,

they discovered the phone lines
to the house

had been cut
from the outside.

It felt strange and wrong
and off from the very beginning.

I think we all had a sense
that something atypical,

and probably something
very bad, had happened.

Hunter:
They found that an intruder
had come in through the garage.

And they saw shattered glass
all over the kitchen floor,

where the glass
on the kitchen door

had been shattered in

to gain admittance
into the house itself.

Other than that, there wasn't
much of a disturbance

in the house.

The house looked like
Bill and Lorraine had had

a normal evening
that night.

And the police deduced that
whoever the intruder was

had taken them
in their own vehicle,

because Bill and Lorraine's car
was missing from the garage.

Silverman:
When we learned that that
phone line had been severed,

I think that's a "chill up
your spine" moment.

That just doesn't
happen here.

Jennifer: There wasn't much
they could ever tell you.

I mean, they'd just tell you
they're looking.

But something somewhere
went wrong.

Silverman:
We had a number of reporters
who were working on the case,

working police sources,

working people
in the prosecutor's office,

trying to get as much
information as they could.

Now, the question became,
were Bill and Lorraine targeted,

or was this random?

Investigators in Anchorage
continue their search

for 18-year-old
Samantha Koenig

while her kidnapper
withdraws ransom money

from her account
using her ATM card.

Jeff: We had a trace, basically,
on the card

so that, if the card was used,
we would be notified.

However, it was a 10-minute
delay in being notified.

And 10 minutes in Anchorage
at midnight,

you can drive
out of town.

We were doing surveillance
at every single

publicly accessible ATM
in the city of Anchorage,

in hopes that we would at least
be at one of those locations.

He eventually did,

but the next time he used it
was in Willcox, Arizona.

Hunter: He stopped at different
ATMs in different states

and different towns,

and would withdraw money
using Samantha's ATM card.

Hendricks: Putting on
a lot of layers of clothing

not to be detected
by authorities when at the ATM.

FBI agents in Willcox, Arizona
got out of bed,

and because of
the 10-minute delay,

by the time everybody
got notified,

he was 30 minutes down the road,
moving on to the next ATM.

Hendricks: He was heading East
on the I-10 corridor.

He then ended up in Humble,
Texas.

Surveillance footage from an ATM
was able to capture

a blurry image of the car
he was driving -- a Ford Focus.

Hunter: They were following
where he had been.

They were always
quite a few steps behind him.

But now, authorities
had something substantial

that they could actually
look into.

And so, they were able to
determine the type of car,

and then alert authorities
in the different states

to be on the lookout
for this car.

Hendricks: He then stops
in Shepherd, Texas, at an ATM,

withdrawing money, then drives
one more hour to Lufkin, Texas.

Jeff: I was aware of all
of those things happening,

real-time Alaska time.

I knew that he was using it
in New Mexico and in Texas.

We knew that he
was moving East,

and felt that that
was actually good

that he was traveling
on the I-10 corridor.

He would go down to East Texas,
and that's where he was going,

to these small towns
in East Texas.

If you want to vanish, you would
go to one of these small towns.

So, it makes sense that he would
go to them.

Jeff:
Once he got into Texas,

we believed that he had
hunkered down

because there were two
withdrawals in two days there,

so it appeared as though
he was staying in the area.

So, FBI got in touch with
the Texas rangers,

and an FBI agent down there
put together a BOLO --

be on the lookout --
for a vehicle.

We believed that the suspect was
traveling in a white vehicle.

We had several photographs
from surveillance cameras,

so we knew that he was
wearing disguises.

Hadnot: That particular day
was just like any other day.

We report to work.

It was, like,
8:00 in the morning.

The first information I got came
from my captain out of Houston,

relaying to me that there was
a young lady from Alaska

that was missing,

her bank card was being used
in close proximity to Lufkin.

One of the officers there
noticed the vehicle

in the parking lot
of a Quality Inn.

Hadnot: I recall the vehicle was
parked in the back of the hotel.

I was sitting two parking slots
from the suspect's vehicle.

I wasn't there very long --
I'm gonna say 30 minutes max.

I see a group of people
up on the second-floor landing,

just standing there,
talking.

I could tell they were
a close group

because they stood very close
to each other,

and everybody was kind of
jovial, just joking around.

When they came downstairs,

and they went
their separate ways,

I just sat there
and watched him

as he walked directly to
that little white car.

I got in behind the suspect's
vehicle as it was going onto 59.

Jeff:
The FBI and the law enforcement
down there decided that,

if they had an opportunity
to stop the car,

and find out who was driving it,
and identify him, they would.

Hadnot:
I look at it as any other
surveillance that we've done.

Just played it cool, and just
followed him at a safe distance.

That's when I started calling
Trooper Henry on the radio,

giving him play-by-play
on where he is,

and which direction
he's about to turn.

We got to get probable cause
to get him stopped,

so try to get in position
to get him speeding,

or find another traffic
violation to get him stopped.

And sure enough,
I guess he had a heavy foot,

because Trooper Henry
clocked him

a few miles over
on the speed.

He broke the speed limit
by three miles per hour,

and in Texas,
that's a good traffic stop.

So, they stopped him.

Hadnot: Trooper Henry
approached his vehicle.

He seemed...

very relaxed.

He was, "Yeah."

There was nothing
that stood out about him.

I don't think he knew
what we knew

while we were
talking to him.

And as soon as he looked at
the driver license,

he started waving, like...

And that's when I got out of
my vehicle, and approached.

And I looked at
the driver license,

and I'm like,
"Hey, this guy's from Alaska."

When he saw it wasn't just
a speeding ticket,

or realized it wasn't just
a speeding ticket,

you could tell
he was a little nervous.

They stopped him,

and they identified him,
through his Alaska I.D.,

as Israel Keyes,

and that he matched
the description of the person

that they had seen
in the video.

Michelle:
We had no clue who he was.

We'd never
seen him before.

James didn't know him.
I didn't know him.

The family
didn't know him.

Hendricks: When Texas rangers
pulled over Israel Keyes,

they weren't sure
how he was connected

to Samantha Koenig's
disappearance,

or what in his past may have led
him to this moment.

When Israel Keyes
was 20,

he received a high school
equivalency degree,

soon after enrolling
in the Army.

Hunter: He enlisted for
a three-year term.

He was assigned to Fort Hood
for quite some time.

He was assigned to
a mortar company.

And he was stationed
for a time in Egypt.

A lot of the stories
he would share with me

were about being in the Army,
being fairly young in the Army,

and going out,
and having parties

with whoever
he was stationed with.

Hunter:
Keyes joined the army largely as
rebellion against his parents,

who didn't like any sort
of governmental

kind of entity at all.

And during his time in the Army,
it solidified some views

he already had
about political points,

and just general philosophical
views that he had.

While in the Army, based at
Fort Lewis in Washington state,

Israel Keyes met a woman
named Tammie.

She really was drawn to
his intelligence,

and his personality,

and the sense of humor
he displayed with her.

They ended up
having a child together.

She was part of the Makah
Indian tribe.

He wanted to be the father
for the child.

So, when he got out of
the Army,

he moved in with Tammie
in Neah Bay, Washington.

Thompson: Israel would brag
about his daughter,

and all the milestones
of a baby kinda growing up.

"She did this today"
or "She did that."

Outwardly, Keyes seemed to live
a fairly typical life.

He seemed to be a dad
who loved his kid.

He seemed to be a partner
of his girlfriend.

He seemed to talk fondly about
his daughter, and his family,

and it seemed to be
a normal family life.

I think that this speaks to
the emotional intelligence

of these guys to be perceived
the way they want,

from context to context,
and to enable them to blend in.

Thompson: He talked about
Lake Crescent.

He talked about various
other places in Washington,

where he could just
make people disappear.

He believed that
he could tell

when somebody
would not be missed.

And so, he saw himself as having
sort of an animal sixth sense,

where he could pick out kind of
the weak person in the herd,

if you will.

Thompson: There was nothing
that implied to me

that he had any sort
of anger issue.

There was no red flag,

there was no alarm bells
that went off

when I was around him
at all.

Hendricks: Keyes eventually
breaks up with Tammie.

And he moves, then,
to Anchorage, Alaska,

has a live-in girlfriend
named Kimberly.

Hunter: He left his daughter
with Tammie,

and eventually,
his daughter did come up

and live with him
for periods of time.

They worked out
an arrangement

where they would
share custody of her.

He starts his own
construction company,

where he is well-respected,
and known to do good work.

Hunter:
It was a successful business.

No one had any reason
to suspect

that he wasn't anything
that he appeared to be,

which was this business owner
in the community.

Hadnot: He removed
a huge pocket knife,

and placed it
on the hood of his car.

And I walked up,
saw that knife.

I immediately grabbed the knife
as I'm walking by.

And I looked at
the driver license

that Keyes
had presented.

I'm like, "He's from Alaska."
And bells started going off.

Jeff: I was working on the case
back in Anchorage.

I want to say 10:00
in the morning or so,

we got a phone call
from our local FBI people,

who told us that they had
an Alaskan

stopped driving a vehicle
down there,

and that he matched
the description.

When you put it
all together,

with the information
that we had,

Ms. Koenig being from Alaska,
more than likely,

the person who abducted her
was from Alaska.

And when Trooper Henry
finds an Alaska driver license,

it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to put that together,

and figure out this might be
the guy we're looking for.

Hunter: And then,
they searched the car,

and found a lot of
incriminating items

in the car
Keyes was driving,

including Samantha Koenig's
ATM card -- debit card.

I think that we all believed
that Samantha was still alive.

I mean,
we have to believe that,

and we have to go by that,
to stay motivated.

In my 27-year career
in the FBI,

I never saw anybody
so meticulous

in planning their crimes,

and getting away with it
for so long.

Jeff: He would bury
these kill kits in areas,

and then travel back
to those locations

to commit
the next crime.

He'd have rope,
he'd have gloves,

he'd have tape,
he'd have zip ties,

some of them,
he would have a gun in there --

all the tools that someone
would need to abduct, restrain,

and murder someone.

Hunter:
He knew he wanted a house
that had an attached garage

that would make it easier
to enter unseen.

It was more about the house
than it was about the Curriers.

Hunter: He had a headlamp on,
so he could see.

And he came in
in a blitz-style attack.

Jeff: He told us that he wasn't
cooperating with his plan.

He didn't tell us
what his plan was,

but he did say he had plans
for both of them.

How could a man that's married
and has a child do this?

I think that part of what he got
off on was dragging it out,

you know, terrify them, and do
whatever he planned to do.

Russell:
Those were choices that he made

railing against just the very
idea of trying to do good,

and basically deciding

that he was gonna be
the angel of death.

Keyes turned that around on her,
and told her,

"Well, I think you got
your monster."

Anchorage business owner
Israel Keyes

has been pulled over
by Texas authorities.

Searching his car,
detectives find the ATM card

of missing 18-year-old
Samantha Koenig.

There is hope that she
is still alive,

but the clock is ticking.

Where is Samantha?
What does Israel Keyes know?

And how might it all be
connected to another abduction

less than a year earlier?
