It was just horrible déjà vu --

another night out,
another college girl gone.

There was a sense of panic
that this was happening again.

♪♪

♪♪

Welcome to "Very Scary People."

I'm Donnie Wahlberg.

He was many things
to many people --

brother, godfather, teammate,
and calculated killer.

A man described by some
as a gentle giant,

he used his size and strength
to brutalize his victims.

Operating in the fall months,

and with college campuses
as his preferred hunting ground,

he terrorized the coed
population of Virginia

with impunity
for almost a decade.

This is
"The Back-to-School Killer."

French:
It's September 13, 2014.

It's the beginning
of the fall semester at UVA.

Longo:
The weather's still nice.

Weekends are very busy
in Charlottesville.

They're especially busy
around grounds --

lots of student activities,

lots of parties,
lots of gatherings.

Augenstein:
There's a lot of excitement

at the beginning
of the school semester.

Hannah Graham had
a big evening planned.

Hannah Graham is from
Fairfax County, Virginia.

She's a star athlete.
She's a great student.

French: Hannah was very proud

of going to
the University of Virginia

and was a member
of the ski club.

She loved the sport

and very, very well-loved
by her peers.

She's just the kind of girl

that a lot of people
like to be around.

So, Hannah leaves her apartment.

She's all dressed up
in a spangly top.

Hannah starts the evening

by going out
to a trendy restaurant

in the downtown area
of Charlottesville.

She has a few drinks
there with friends.

And then she leaves
and goes to a house party.

Stuart:
Hannah's been with friends.

She's been drinking
and starts to not feel well,

and she tells the friend
that she's with

she's going to go home.

The friend says to Hannah,
"Let me walk you home."

And Hannah says,
"No, I've got this.

I'm gonna walk home.
It's fine."

So, Hannah starts walking home.

For some reason unknown to me,
perhaps unknown to others,

perhaps we'll never know,
she left that group.

And she begins making her way
away from grounds,

away from our campus.

Some of the texts
that she sent friends

indicated that she didn't know
where she was.

And there's a lot
of surveillance footage

that shows Hannah's path.

French: We first see Hannah
outside of McGrady's Pub,

and this is where she's
walking around in circles.

Kind of looks like she's lost.

The bouncer there sees her
walking down the sidewalk,

and she stumbles.

And he thinks to himself that,
you know,

she's probably
had enough to drink.

In fact, he asks her
if she's okay.

She says she's fine
and keeps walking.

We next see Hannah outside
of the Shell gas station.

Longo: And she's running.

She's not running as if she's
running from something,

but she's trying to get quickly
from one place to the next.

The next time we see her,

she's seen on the corner
of Second and Market Street,

which is in downtown
Charlottesville.

French: And I believe that is
when she texts friends

that she is on the downtown mall
and that she's lost.

Hannah, at that point,
had vanished.

Augenstein: She disappeared,
and she never came home.

Her family was obviously
desperate to find her.

Longo: You know, at the time
that Hannah disappeared,

I had just left the state.

I was in Odessa, Texas,
about to teach a class,

when I received word
of this missing college student.

And that was late Sunday
evening into Monday morning.

I called the Charlottesville
police and said,

"What do we have here?
Is this a runaway?

Is this someone that would
hurt themselves?"

And they said, "No, this was
very uncharacteristic

of Hannah Graham.

We suspect foul play."

And within hours,
this story blew up.

Tonight, brand-new information
in the desperate,

frantic search to find
a beautiful

missing University of Virginia
student.

Reporter: Police remain
laser-focused

on finding Hannah Graham.

This hour, a story that strikes
fear in every parent.

The search for Hannah Graham

is one that reminds us
just how frightening

it can be to send
your child off to college,

only for the worst
imaginable thing to happen.

♪♪

The fear on grounds
at the University of Virginia,

the fear in the community
was really palpable.

It was frightening
that a UVA student

could just vanish like that from
a night on the downtown mall.

The searches for Hannah Graham
continued to grow.

First, it was just friends
looking for her.

Then, there's bloodhounds.

People are just being asked
to look everywhere for her.

When Hannah Graham's parents
asked for information

about their daughter's
disappearance,

it was really heartbreaking.

You have all, I'm sure,
read about Hannah.

You will have read that Hannah
is a second-year student

at the University
of Virginia,

a skier, a musician,
a softball player.

She likes to help people,

and she's interested
in a career

in helping others.

That's one Hannah,

but Hannah is also
our little girl.

There was a huge amount
of pressure on police

to solve Hannah's disappearance.

And the intensity and the sheer
volume of the resources

that were put
into finding Hannah

is something
that I had never seen before,

and I don't know
that I'll see again.

Longo: There was
a heightened sense of urgency.

I recall receiving a message

from a parent
of one of Hannah's friends,

saying, "Please, find
my friend's daughter."

I stepped in front of the media
for the first time

that afternoon.

Earlier this afternoon,

I had the opportunity to sit
with John and Susan Graham.

I can't imagine.

As a parent and as a husband,

I can't imagine
what they're going through

these past several days.

Stuart: Chief Longo was clearly
emotionally moved

by this disappearance,

and he promised that
he was going to find Hannah

and he was going to find
the person responsible

for taking her.

There's missing-persons cases
everywhere, every day.

But this case captured a lot
of people's imagination.

I think a lot of people thought,

"Well, that could be
my daughter,"

or "That could be my friend."

Within a week, this case changes
from a missing-persons case

to something else.

It's feared that something
has happened to Hannah Graham.

♪♪

Anchor: Cops just released
these surveillance photos

taken at the missing
woman's apartment

just hours before she vanished.

French: Every day, it seemed
to get crazier and crazier,

the details that were
coming out of this case.

And the community was more
and more on edge.

"Was this a random act?
Were people safe?

Were college students
being targeted?"

These were questions
being asked.

After Hannah goes missing,
there was, of course,

a fear in the air
at the University of Virginia.

You can't help but be on edge,
and that's what you really felt

in the
Charlottesville community.

You have a college student
in a very safe area

that just vanishes.

Stuart: Police were urging women
not to run alone,

not to walk alone at night.

People were really thinking

carefully about walking
from their car.

It was really
a frightening time.

For a lot of people in the media

who are familiar
with Charlottesville,

we're going,
"Oh, no, not another one."

Augenstein: When it started to
look like something had happened

to Hannah Graham,

I remembered that there was
an earlier case

of a young woman
in Charlottesville

who had disappeared at the
beginning of the school year,

and her name
was Morgan Harrington.

I've covered a lot of crimes
in Charlottesville.

The Hannah Graham case was huge

because of the similarity
to Morgan Harrington.

Young college student,
separated from friends through,

you know, for various reasons,
alone, suddenly gone.

So, I do think people were
thinking about Morgan

immediately when Hannah
disappeared.

Morgan Harrington
was my best friend,

and we went
to high school together.

She had transferred
in the middle of high school.

And from the outside, she looked
like an amazing person,

and then to see
that the inside matched

just that sparkling personality,
we really hit it off.

Vance: When I met Morgan,

she was so incredibly
glamorously beautiful,

that I wondered what
Morgan Harrington's maturity

or ego must be like.

But she was original,
and she was full of service

and full of subtle outreach
to her classmates.

Dan Harrington:
Morgan had found herself.

Morgan decided she wanted
to be a teacher.

Teenage years come with joys
but also with a lot of stresses.

And we had some stresses
with Morgan.

And kids do lots of things,

but they ultimately
come back to their parents.

And we became quite close.

♪♪

October 17th was a big day.

Morgan and her friends were
going to attend

the Metallica concert
in Charlottesville, Virginia,

and they had been
planning that for months.

The tickets were pinned
to our refrigerator

for a long time.

Stuart:
She goes and shows her mother

what she's planning
to wear to the concert.

It's a black mini skirt,
black boots,

a black shirt emblazoned
with the band name "Pantera,"

which is another heavy-metal
band that she liked.

Morgan was ready to go
and got in her car and said,

"Two, four, one, Mama,"
and she drove away.

It's the last time I saw her.

"Two, four, one" means,
"I love you too much forever

and once beyond forever."

It's kind of our family lingo
of "I love you."

She is gonna go with a group
of college-age friends.

They all gather
at another university,

called James Madison University,

and then caravan together to
this concert in Charlottesville.

Henderson: Morgan and I had been
to Charlottesville

and that arena dozens of times.

Morgan's
brother went to college at UVA,

and Morgan and I
would hang out with him.

And we'd go to concerts,
and everything would be fine.

At some point during the show,

Morgan has to go
to the bathroom.

And it was just about time
for Metallica to come on.

And Morgan said to a friend,
"Come on. Go with me."

And the person said,
"No, I want to keep dancing."

So, Morgan went
in the strobe lights

and in the crazy energy of
a packed John Paul Jones Arena,

upstairs to the bathroom.

And I think she fell.

She ended up with an injury
to the lower part of her chin,

where it was bleeding.

She went into the bathroom.

And a nurse was at the concert,

and she saw Morgan
and she asked was she okay,

was there something
that she could do?

And Morgan said, no, no,
she would be fine.

Vance: But the nurse
in the bathroom

saw her dabbing a wound,
and Morgan acted a little funny.

So, what happened?

In my scenario,
Morgan concussed,

and she was disoriented.

Augenstein:
Somehow, she ends up outside.

She's gone through
the wrong door.

And she tries to get back in,

but her ticket
is back at her seat.

So, they don't let her back in.

Vance:
And so Morgan is outside.

It's drizzling.

It's maybe 35 degrees.
It's dark.

The whole building is shaking
with music,

and her jacket and her ticket
are on the seat.

French: She texts her friend and
says, "I can't get back inside."

So, she's got a problem.

Stuart: Morgan's behavior
outside the arena,

various witnesses describe
as being odd.

In some cases, even hostile.

And she was heard trying to get
back into the arena,

as you might imagine.

I mean, if you've paid
for a ticket and you've been

excited to do this
for months with your friends,

and then somehow
you're locked out,

you're not going to be happy.

Vance: So, she starts to walk
in the parking lot.

Was she concussed?

Was she thinking,
"What am I gonna do?

It's so cold out here."

Ultimately, she was last seen
on the Copeley Bridge.

There are sidewalks
on both sides,

and witnesses reported seeing
her hitchhiking on that bridge.

Augenstein: So, next to
the John Paul Jones Arena,

there's a cab-staging area,
where cabbies would park

and would wait until they'd get
a fare to leave the area,

and it's less than
a couple minutes' walk

from the John Paul Jones Arena.

Absolutely possible that
a cabdriver would have seen her

and would have stopped to ask
if she needed a ride.

Nobody heard any noises
that suggested distress.

Nobody saw her getting
into the vehicle.

French: It's a reasonable
assumption that Morgan thought,

"Hey, this is
a legit taxicab driver,

and I'm gonna get a ride
and be just fine,

meet up with my friends later."

Bryan-Campos:
So, like Hannah, Morgan

had disappeared without a trace.

♪♪

Dan Harrington:
I went to church in the morning.

And as the morning progressed,

I was waiting for Morgan
to come home,

because we were going
to balance her checkbook.

And I get this call from the
University of Virginia police,

who say that they have found
Morgan's purse in a parking lot.

Yeah, I thought it was
a little strange.

And when Gil came home
and I told her the story...

It's like the elevator
dropping 50 stories.

That moment, I knew something
terrible had happened,

because no woman,
no girl leaves her purse.

Something was really wrong.

I was thinking,
"Has she fallen?

Is she hurt somewhere?"

Morgan's purse and her phone

were found
in different locations.

Morgan's purse was found
by a lacrosse field,

across from where
the concert was.

And Morgan's phone was found
in the parking lot of the arena.

And the battery had been
taken out of it,

which I have come to learn

is kind of a thing
that perpetrators do

to make sure that there's no
tracing or pinging on the phone.

Dan Harrington: On Monday,
we go to the police station

at the University of Virginia.

And we spend the day
with the Virginia state police,

and they had started searching
for Morgan around the campus.

And they told us that in front
of the building,

many news media had come.

And they recommended
that we go out the back.

And Gil and I said,
"Absolutely not.

Who best to represent Morgan?"

And Gil and I,
we went out the front,

and we started talking
to the media.

The Harringtons would like
to make some comments.

French: The first time I heard
Dan and Gil

get in front of that camera
and talk about their daughter...

I'd like to say,
if Morgan is out there

and hears us, please come home.

[ Voice breaking ]
And if someone has Morgan,

please let her go
and come home safely.

I mean, it really makes
me emotional

because I was a young mother.

And I just tried to put myself
in their shoes.

And it's heartbreaking to think
how helpless you would feel,

not knowing where your baby is.

Tonight, the words
every parent fears most,

"Your child is missing."

Where is 20-year-old
Morgan Harrington?

Tips were flooding
law enforcement.

Hundreds and hundreds of tips,

and they were following them
down as best they could.

But they weren't
finding anything

that would lead them
to Morgan.

Gil Harrington: Dan and I really
went into overdrive

to find Morgan.

I think we both have
particular skills.

We're both medical people,

and we utilized that skill
to hold our emotions in check.

And at the same time,
yeah, we were gobsmacked.

You wake up and you think,
"What is it?

Oh, yeah,
this has really happened.

We don't know
where our daughter is."

French:
Morgan Harrington's parents,

after their daughter
went missing,

were begging the media,
begging police for help,

doing whatever they could
to find their daughter.

And Metallica really stepped up
and got involved

by putting out reward money
in an effort

to help find Morgan Harrington.

Hi.
I'm James of Metallica.

Right now, there's up
to a $150,000 reward.

Augenstein:
In any investigation,

you keep hoping
for more evidence

that you can keep following.

There was not a lot of evidence
coming in

about the disappearance
of Morgan Harrington.

As an investigator,

oftentimes you reach
a crossroads of an inability

to gain evidence that'll be
prudent for you to solve a case.

But you need to be patient.

Patience will get you
to what you're looking for.

A little less than a month
after Morgan went missing...

Augenstein: This guy is walking
by an apartment,

and he sees a T-shirt
draped on a bush.

French:
And it was the Pantera T-shirt

that Morgan was wearing
on the night of the concert.

Augenstein: So, this guy called
his roommate and said,

"Go outside and get it,

because that's the one that
I think police are looking for,

in Morgan Harrington's
disappearance."

And it really sent a shock
wave through the community.

Titus:
I feel that the abductor,

by placing the T-shirt
on the branch

so it could be found,
is taunting law enforcement,

as well as letting the family

and the community know
that he's out there.

Almost as if,
"Look, I got away with this,

so I'm going to just
drape it out in the public,

right here for everyone to see.

Yeah, I did this."

Porcher: This was the lucky
break that investigators needed.

By retrieving a shirt
with DNA evidence,

it now sets forth a trajectory
that you can make connections

within the DNA database for
a positive I.D. on one's DNA.

The shirt was sent off
for DNA testing,

and that testing allowed
a connection to be made

between Morgan's disappearance
and a brutal assault

on a woman in Fairfax,
Virginia, in 2005.

Welcome back
to "Very Scary People."

20-year-old college student
Morgan Harrington

had been missing for a month.

With few clues to go on,
the case had gone cold

until Morgan's bloody T-shirt

was found near the scene
of her disappearance.

DNA collected from the shirt
was matched

to yet another
unsolved attack,

on a woman in Fairfax,
Virginia, years earlier.

The discovery
of this new evidence

causes investigators
to wonder,

is there a serial predator
in their midst?

Reporter: The man who found
Morgan Harrington's shirt

on this bush
in downtown Charlottesville says

police later told him
they had a DNA match

to the Fairfax
sexual-assault case of 2005.

French: Morgan's T-shirt
was tested for DNA

after it was discovered
in November of 2009,

and there was a hit on it
from a rape

in the Fairfax, Virginia, area.

So, this was a huge break
in the Morgan Harrington case.

♪♪

We're in Fairfax County,
Virginia, in September of 2005.

And there is a woman,
who we're gonna call R.G.,

and she is at a grocery store,
doing some shopping.

She was in this country
studying.

I think she'd traveled here
from India.

And she's walking back
to her apartment

with several bags of groceries.

French: And this man walks up to
her and tries to talk to her.

So, she kind of ignores him,
walks by,

and he starts walking
behind her very fast.

This guy picks her up,
and he carries her.

He's strong enough to carry her
into an area that's more remote.

And he throws her down
onto the ground.

He dragged her to a grassy area
in the apartment complex nearby

and began choking her
and raping her.

R.G. is fighting him,
and he says to her,

"If you scream again,
I will twist your neck.

If you let me do this,
I will let you go."

He may not have set out
to kill people

if they let him
sexually assault them.

But if they fought,
they were gonna die that night.

Augenstein: So, as this attack
is going on,

some headlights start coming up
on this man and R.G.

And when the man sees
the headlights,

he gets up and he takes off.

French:
R.G. comes out of the woods.

She's covered in blood.

And it's really just a miracle
that she's alive at this point

and really only because
this car had pulled up

and saved her life.

After the attack, R.G. was able
to give police a description

of the man who attacked her.

She described him
as an African-American,

dressed in khaki pants.

French: So, after DNA connects
the 2005 rape

to Morgan Harrington's case,

the sketch of this unknown
assailant gets re-released.

When Morgan was missing,
we really did try every avenue

that we could to find her,
to bring her back.

We would just go wherever
the next opportunity was,

was where we would
put our efforts

and try and get information.

'Cause we miss our little baby.

She is our precious daughter,
and we hope that this attention

can help bring her back
to our home.

Someone told me that they had
been praying

that she would be found.

And I was thinking,

"I wish that we could pray
that she would be released,"

'cause I still had some hope
that she would be alive.

French: Three months
after her disappearance,

Morgan Harrington
is still missing.

Titus: When there is a predator
on the loose in a community,

it causes unbelievable
amounts of fear.

Gil Harrington: People in
Charlottesville wanted to say,

"Well, maybe this
was a drifter."

It's because people can't fathom

that someone who lives
in their community

is capable of such violence.

French: The investigation was
certainly stalled at this point.

And every time we did a story,
yes, tips were coming in.

But it certainly was running
into some speed bumps.

I think it was frustrating
for us, as it, I'm sure,

is for any family
of a missing person,

not to find the person.

I'm sure it was also
equally frustrating

for law enforcement
not to find Morgan.

They wanted to find her, too.

The entire time, I thought
Morgan was coming back.

I was certain.

At Christmas, I left a gift
for her at her parents' house.

You know, I went and visited.

And I was certain that Morgan
was gonna come back,

and we would pick up
where we left off.

When Morgan was missing, that's
such an ambiguous time, again.

You know, hope, despair,
hope, despair.

I wanted Morgan's body back,

because then I knew no one
could ever hurt her again.

The time that Morgan
was missing,

those 101 days, were
the hardest days of my life.

When it comes
to a missing-persons case,

the old adage is,
"The longer time passes,

the less likely there will be
a happy ending to the story."

Reporter: It's being called one
of the greatest search efforts

in Virginia history,

but there's still no sign
of Hannah Graham.

♪♪

Augenstein: It was really very,
very moving,

and friends sang and spoke,

asking her to please
come back alive.

You make things good,
Hannah Graham.

Where are you?

We want you back
where you belong.

We love you more than you know,

and we cannot wait
to see you soon.

Tonight, fast-breaking news
in the frantic search

for missing college student
Hannah Graham.

Cops have just released
brand-new surveillance footage

from the night the 18-year-old
sophomore vanished,

showing a mysterious man
following Hannah.

I remember, every day while I
was reporting on this case,

I had new information.

Seemingly each day,
there was a new development.

Augenstein:
Police have already gathered

all of the security footage
from the mall.

These are all clues.

These are pieces of evidence

that can be used
to help put together

Hannah Graham's
last few moments.

Bryan-Campos: When I saw
this man cross the mall

and fall in step
behind Hannah,

I felt like
she was being hunted.

This man was stalking his prey.

♪♪

♪♪

French: Around the same time
that Hannah is out with friends,

enjoying her second year
back at UVA,

there's a man enjoying his time
out on the downtown mall.

Longo: This was someone
who people, I think,

would characterize as very
outgoing, very gregarious,

very fun-loving, kind of a big,
happy spirit, if you will.

This man has been out drinking
at various establishments

in downtown Charlottesville,

and he has touched women where
they don't want to be touched.

Augenstein: According to people,
this guy is buying drinks,

and he's drinking them.

Still very physically
demonstrative.

He goes into a bar called
Blue Light on the downtown mall.

This is a big man.

And he walks up
to two smaller women,

and in an instant, he, without
their permission, picks them up.

Augenstein: He picks them up,
and he's swaying side to side

with them, dancing.

Not surprisingly, they're not
very comfortable with that,

and they tell him
to put them down.

Later, at Tempo, the same woman
that was at Blue Light,

that this man picked up
by her bottom,

her feet were hurting her,
so she takes off her boots.

Augenstein: He quickly goes over
to her

and starts rubbing her feet.

French: And he says, "Any woman
who takes care of her feet

takes care of everything else."

Augenstein: By then,
the employees at the bar realize

this guy is a problem,

and they ask him to leave,
and he does.

He is walking down the mall.

It's a beautiful evening.

He's high-fiving people.
He's very friendly.

He's gregarious.
He's not hiding from anybody.

He's out there, right
in the middle of the action.

And probably the most
chilling video that you see,

this big man high-fives
these two women,

and in the background,

you see Hannah Graham walking
kind of unsteady on her feet.

And then you see him
loop around,

come behind Hannah Graham,
and then, all of a sudden,

you see him put his arm
around her,

almost as if he knows her.

But he doesn't.

Augenstein: He puts his arm
around Hannah,

and she's continuing to walk.

She doesn't push him off.

And another passerby notices it

and realizes
something's not right.

So, she walks up and says,
"You don't even know her."

And he looks at this individual
and says, "Hush."

In that moment, so many people
knew something wasn't right.

Bryan-Campos: So, we know
from surveillance video

and witness accounts

that after this man strikes up
a conversation with Hannah,

they go into a bar,
where they order two drinks.

French: The person that had
confronted this man

follows him in there with
a friend and is watching him.

Augenstein: At one point,
they get ready to leave,

this guy and Hannah,

and one of the women
who had had one of these run-ins

with the guy earlier says,

"He is gonna [bleep] her up
tonight."

French:
At the very end of the night,

the last person that would see
Hannah Graham witnesses her

next to this individual's car
and hears her say...

"I'm not getting
in that with you.

What is it, stolen?"

Hannah does get into the car.

The guy across the street,
who heard this exchange,

he drives by
a few minutes later,

and Hannah and this guy
and his car are gone.

This is the last time anyone
sees Hannah Graham alive.

Stuart: Within a couple of days,

because of those videos
and witness accounts,

they have developed
a person of interest.

Charlottesville police have now
identified a person of interest

in the Hannah Graham case.

So, that person isn't in
custody, but we know who he is.

Others know who he is.

At the point in time
the evidence began to mount

against a particular suspect,

time was of the essence
either to find Hannah

and bring her home alive

or find the evidence sufficient
to sustain a prosecution.

The last person seen with
missing University of Virginia

student Hannah Graham
is wanted by police this morning

on unrelated charges.

A week after Hannah's
disappearance,

police would identify
the person of interest

as Jesse Matthew Jr.

Longo: The video evidence
certainly was the mechanism

by which
his identity surfaced.

Very early on, as I recall,

there was a member
of our department

who knew of him from high school
and recognized him.

So, we knew pretty early on
that the person in the image

was Jesse LeRoy Matthew.

In fact, I believe
that Jesse Matthew

was the last person
she was seen with

before she vanished
off the face of the earth.

People would say later to me,

"Longo, I really thought
you got the wrong guy.

This is not this guy.

This guy is a big teddy bear.

He's fun. He's gregarious.
He's social. He's lovable.

He's not this guy."

But, yeah, he is.

Yeah, he is.

Jesse's dad describes him
as a gentle giant.

Jesse is extremely tall,
built, thick man.

He is a very large man.

He towers over most women.

Augenstein: It depends who you
ask who Jesse Matthew Jr. is.

Some people refer to him
as a big puppy dog,

a very friendly, sort
of goofy kid who was athletic.

He was offered the chance
to go to college,

and he was
a standout football player.

And Jesse Matthew took
his athleticism skills

to Liberty University.

Stuart: Students at Liberty
would likely be more sheltered,

perhaps,
than at other schools.

It is a Christian university.

They have a code of conduct
for students.

Jesse Matthew may have started
at Liberty University,

but he did not stay there long,

because he would be accused
of sexually assaulting someone.

He was never charged,

because I don't think the young
lady wanted to press charges,

The next school
for Jesse Matthew

was Christopher Newport
University,

but history sort
of repeated itself there.

There were allegations
of sexual assault,

and Jesse Matthew
left that school, too.

Stuart:
And the same situation occurred,

where he was able
to leave the school.

That history stayed hidden.

Bryan-Campos: So, here's
a person who's had two passes,

who has tested the waters,

and found that he can get away
with sexual assault

without legal repercussion.

He's lost his football
scholarship,

he leaves
Christopher Newport University,

and he's back
in Charlottesville.

Psychologically,
criminals gain traction

when they see
that they're not caught.

So, when we look
to Mr. Matthew,

I believe that he felt
a level of emboldedness

because he was not convicted
in the prior two offenses.

Stuart: He comes back
to Charlottesville

and finds work as a cabdriver.

Jesse is also an assistant
football coach

for one of the private
schools in the area.

He was fooling so many people
and living a double life.

We want to talk
to Jesse Matthew.

We want to talk to him.

about his interaction

with a sweet young girl
that we can't find,

because he was with her.

Gil Harrington:
When Morgan was missing,

I reverted to something
that I do often

when I am stressed,
is I do journal.

In a way, I felt that it was
almost like pulling

shards of glass or a pain out
by putting them on the paper.

There is karma or fate
or destiny.

Evil may rule for a while,
but eventually, inevitably,

It's just a matter of time
before he acts out again.

We received a call that they
had discovered human remains.

Stuart: Jesse, just like Hannah,

and just like Morgan
years before,

has now vanished,

and investigators
don't know where he is.

I was shaking.
I was scared.

There was no one else around me.

Gil Harrington:
I just wanted to stop him,

because there was inevitably

going to be another victim
for him if he wasn't stopped.

He is the source of information

that can bring this
to conclusion.

French:
Now the next chapter starts,

and they want to start finding
justice for their daughter.

Now that police have identified
the man on the security cameras

with Hannah Graham
as Jesse Matthew Jr.,

the hard work begins.

Prove he's guilty
of abducting her.

But with no evidence,
and no body,

it'll take
old-fashioned detective work,

as well as an unexpected assist

to bring a predator to justice.
