There are those that believe

that when serial killers
make their first kill,

that opens the floodgates.

Like an animal might or a wolf

might when it's had a taste of blood,

it's going to come back for it again.

And in Aileen Wuornos' case,

the ease in which
she had gotten away with it,

I think, reinforced her belief

that this was an easier way
of making money.

Here, she could take everything.

Welcome to "very scary people."

I'm Donnie wahlberg.

She was known as the "damsel of death,"

one of the few female serial
killers in American history,

Aileen Wuornos,

a complex, misunderstood misfit
with a hair-trigger temper,

whose life and murder spree
was portrayed in the 2003 film.

"Monster" by charlize theron.

But the true story of how and why

this woman gunned down
seven men is even more dramatic,

compelling, and scary than the
fictional film about her life.

How did she become a vicious killer?

Were the seeds of violence planted

in her sad and unusually brutal
childhood?

And how did investigators
finally catch her?

Here is part 1 of
"monster made."

A serial killer tops our look at stories

from around the country tonight...

Aileen Wuornos,
known as the "highway hooker"

because that's where
she picked up her victims,

also known as the "damsel of
death" for what she did to them.

On the 4th of July, Aileen
and tyria were on their way over

to Daytona beach to watch the fireworks.

They were going through
the ocala national forest,

and tyria was driving.

They had noticed a sign
on the side of the road

that indicated that there was
a Indian reservation,

so they took a little detour.

As tyria starts to head back,

she's driving a little bit too fast

to make a curve in the road,

and the car goes off
the side of the road...

...turns onto its passenger side
and slides.

Comes to rest on its tires.

Aileen knew the seriousness
of the situation.

She told tyria that they needed
to leave immediately,

hide the car, because
this was a dead man's car.

The accident that happened
in Peter siems' car

probably was an act of fate.

Had it not been for the accident,

I'm convinced we'd have other dead men.

She could've gotten away with it.

In 1989, Aileen Wuornos
was making her living,

such as it was,

as a prostitute on interstate
exits and entrances

in central Florida.

I done asked her, you know, why
she had turned to prostitution.

She was able to make a living otherwise.

Her answer was, "it was more fun
than working in a restaurant."

She was in a
relationship with tyria Moore.

Aileen met tyria in one
of the bars in the Daytona area,

and Aileen developed this feeling

that she was her soul mate.

I believe that the relationship
with Ty Moore and Aileen

was extremely important to Aileen.

This was the first person
who was ever nice to her,

and she falls in love.

This is what she's always wanted.

This is what she always looked for.

- She loved you, didn't she?
- Yes.

She said she'd do
anything for you, didn't she?

Yes, she did.

And she said this to
you on numerous occasions?

Yeah.

She even said
she'd die for you, didn't she, Ty?

Yes, sir.

They were living in a motel

on the east coast
of Florida near Daytona.

Aileen Wuornos would use prostitution

as a way to make enough money
to give them a place to live

and keep a roof over their head.

Aileen always wanted
to take care of tyria.

She always wanted to protect her,

and if tyria was upset or depressed

or they didn't have money to buy
whatever they may have wanted,

she would go out,
and she would prostitute...

...make enough money to purchase
whatever her and tyria wanted.

Tyria and Aileen had been together

for approximately 3 years.

And then one night, in December of 1989,

Wuornos collided with a person

that would change her life forever,

an electronics repairman
named Richard Mallory.

Richard Mallory lived
in clearwater, Florida,

over on the west coast.

He was a guy that liked to party.

He liked prostitutes.

He would occasionally hire them,

and on this weekend,
he saw a female hitchhiking.

He stopped.
He picked her up.

It was Aileen Wuornos.

It started out apparently
as a job like any other,

but somewhere along the line,
things went completely wrong.

It wasn't in my
mind to go out and kill a guy.

Something was different.

Something changed.

Something happened.
Something in the incident

with Richard Mallory, and she snapped,

and she bloomed.

She became a killer.

On the way to Daytona,
they stopped and picked up

some beer and drank
as they went over there.

It was dark out.

They arrived to a place
she's pointed out,

which is in a secluded area
north of Daytona beach,

not on the beach,
out in the palmettos and pines.

They pulled into this dirt cutoff.

At some point, something went
wrong, and Aileen killed him.

Aileen shot him four times.

I had no choice.

I didn't have a chance to stop
the clock, say,

"shoot him in the leg.
Shoot him in the foot.

Shoot him in the arm,"
and I'm not the greatest aimer.

I did whatever I had to do
at the quickest moment

and out just fast as possible.

Richard Mallory was shot
with a .22-caliber pistol.

It was obvious that
he didn't die instantly.

You shoot someone with a
.22-caliber bullet,

and unless you take out the brain,

it's going to take a while.
It's like a large ice pick.

It's a slow, painful, terrifying death

because you know you're dying,

and there's nothing you can do about it.

We know that she
covered him with an old rug,

and she left him there to rot,
but did she watch him die?

Did she stand over him and taunt him?

We don't know.
We'll never know that.

After shooting Mr. Mallory,

Aileen took his car
and all his belongings.

She takes a radar detector,
the camera and later pawns them.

She drove back to
the motel that tyria was at,

and she actually told tyria
what she had done.

We were sitting on the floor watching TV,

and she just come out and said,
"I have something to tell you,"

and I ask her what,
and she said that she had shot

and killed a man that day.

Richard Mallory's body
was found by two fellows

that were scrapping
for metal in the woods.

It was a normal day.
My buddy came to pick me up,

and we're going out scrap metaling

and decided to come out here
to this one trail.

It's right off the beaten path.

When we came in,
we seen buzzards out front.

We didn't think nothing of it,

just think it was a roadkill
out by the road.

Then we started smelling this bad smell,

and then came up on this carpet.

Looked down there and seen
a hand sticking out of it.

We just froze for a minute
and then started running,

almost tripped on each other
getting out of there.

Sure enough, it's Mallory's corpse.

They report that.

I believe he was
faceup when, when he was found.

His pants and the zipper,
I believe, were open.

After they find the body,

the investigation is launched
on Mallory's murder.

There was nothing special

about Mr. Mallory's death
at the time.

This was, unfortunately,
just a normal homicide.

Police at that time had no idea

what they were getting involved in.

Don't have any clue that they're dealing

with a serial killer, no.
None.

When she came back,
she became the serial killer.

She became the predator.

She had a whole pack
that she had put together.

There was about a 6-month hiatus
between Richard Mallory's death

and the second victim, David Spears.

If you ever looked at the
definition of a serial killer

the FBI puts out,

it says they have
a brief cooling-off period,

and this would be hers.

Now when she came back,
she became the serial killer.

She became the predator.

Victim number two was David Spears.

He was a hard worker.
He was in construction.

He was divorced from his wife,

but they were talking about
getting back together.

He was going to head over to Orlando

and spend the weekend
with her, but he never arrived.

Our deputies were on interstate 75,

and they'd come upon his pickup truck

that was disabled
on the side of the road.

It was abandoned.
There was nobody around it.

Within a couple of days,

his body was found in citrus county,

and this victim had been shot six times.

When he was found,
he was naked on the ground.

Now she would kill much more frequently.

She would be shooting more
rounds into the individuals,

- and the time was compressing.
- It was very rapid.

From the second murder
to the third murder,

it was only a couple of days.

The third victim was a guy
by the name of Charles carskaddon.

He was a rodeo worker
from the tampa area.

He was driving back to Florida.
He never arrived.

In carskaddon's case,
he was refusing to pay her,

according to her, and that escalated,

and he ended up getting
nine bullets for that.

Most killers will tell you there's

a certain amount of pleasure
and excitement

in killing a human being.

Instead of being repulsed,
they're fueled.

I think that when Aileen killed
Richard, rage had come out,

and I think as
the other murders progressed,

the rage got more and more and more,

in some cases, brutally,
emptying her gun in their chest.

One victim, six
bullets, another victim, nine bullets.

That's not just an ordinary murder.

That's a brutal killing.

Now one of the unique parts of this case

was that she had
a specific m.0.

She had a whole act
that she had put together,

so she would be out there in her shorts,

and she would hitch a ride, and once in,

she would start with a story
about how she needed to go

to wherever this person
looked to be going

and that she needed to get money

and wanted to know
if you could help me out.

And if they were interested,
fine, but if they weren't,

I'd just get out the next exit
and try again.

She didn't kill everyone
that picked her up.

It's typical of serial killers.

There will be several opportunities,

and they'll pass them up for some reason,

and then they'll strike again.

That's a hell of a lot
of men I went through

before the next jerk came along,
and I used protection.

I think the most surprising
aspect of Aileen Wuornos

was how people warmed up to her.

They had no idea what was
going on inside her head.

Obviously if they did, they
wouldn't have picked her up.

And that was the last ride
they ever took.

We believe that the pattern would be that

she was either posing for prostitution,

or she would tell some of
the people she needed a ride,

she had been stranded.

Aileen Wuornos told stories

about how she had two children
in south Florida,

and that she needed a way
to get down there

and if perhaps somebody
could help her out.

"If you help me out,
I can help you out."

She was commandeering
the vehicle at gunpoint,

or the man was willingly
going into a secluded area

to have sex with her.

This was premeditated.

This was thoughtful,
and this is, in her own way,

they speak of organized
and disorganized serial killers.

She was organized.

And then there was either a robbery,

or there was sexual activity
and a robbery

and a murder
that went along with all of it.

She actually drove away

every victim's vehicle
from the crime scene.

And she and tyria Moore
would use that car for a time

until they saw fit to get rid of it.

After robbing her victims, in some cases,

she would take the possessions
to a pawn shop and get cash.

There were also additional items taken,

and those would be her
trophies and her souvenirs.

Why would Aileen Wuornos
murder men and Rob them?

Some of it was, I believe,

to feed her desire
to have control over these men

and to take everything that they had,

their lives and their property,

and I think that's evident by the fact

that many of the things that she took

were virtually valueless,
that she took them as trophies.

That is a Mark of a serial killer.

She was a killer who robbed,
not a robber who killed.

And then things got worse.

She had the upbringing
that no one would volunteer for.

This was a highly dysfunctional family.

She didn't know that those were
not her parents until later on.

Aileen grew up in Troy, just like I did.

We met when we were, like, 14, 15.

We had a great time together.

She was a great friend.

She was funny as hell.

She loved joking, eating pizza,

playing pool, and stuff like that.

Aileen's upbringing is really
a subject of some speculation.

She certainly had the kind of upbringing

that no one would volunteer for.

Aileen Wuornos was from Troy, Michigan.

She was born to a teenage mother,

a woman who was a Finnish immigrant

who married an American who was convicted

and sent to prison
before she even knew him.

Her father was a convicted sex offender.

And he would eventually die
in prison from suicide,

and her mother would later
abandon her as a child.

And so Aileen was left to be
raised by her grandparents.

Many people think of the grandparents

as sort of a doting,
caring figure in their lives,

but in the case of Aileen
Wuornos, that was not the case.

This wasn't a loving extended family.

This was a highly dysfunctional,
angry family.

She didn't know that those were
not her parents until later on,

and of course, it had
a traumatic effect on her.

And her grandfather was
pretty strict with her.

There are accounts of some pretty violent

- or severe levels of discipline.
- Nobody really did want her...

Her mother, her father, her grandparents.

And that may have played
a significant role

in her behavioral problems growing up

and well into adulthood.

A lot of antisocial behaviors...

Stealing, arson, things of that
nature, difficulty at school.

At 12, she was raped,
and she got pregnant.

In those days, that shames the family,

so they put her
in an unweds' place down in.

- Detroit until she had the baby.
- The baby is born,

and the baby is immediately
taken away from her.

She put her son up for adoption,

and to this day, we don't know
what happened to him.

And then things got worse.

They all turned against
her after she had that baby.

It was horrible.

Kids hated her,
said she did that deliberate.

She just needed somebody
to be a friend to her.

She got into a series
of problems with her grandfather,

to the point where he threw her
out of the house.

She had nowhere to go.

Aileen had to sleep in the cars
outside, which really sucked

because it was really cold,
especially when winter come.

She moved into some nearby woods,

where she was able to learn
to survive on her own outside.

One of the ways she did that
is through crime.

So that's when she become a prostitute

and living in the woods and all that.

She would do her prostitution at night.

Some of the guys would actually
get hotels

and let her stay there.

When you look at the childhood
of Aileen Wuornos,

I don't think anyone
can disagree with this.

She just didn't get a fair shake.

You play the cards that you're dealt,

and the cards that she was dealt,

they were not like
the average person growing up.

She just drifted and lived on the streets

until she finally ended up
moving to Florida.

At the age of 20,
Aileen married a gentleman

by the name of Lewis fell,
who was 76 at the time,

but about 9 weeks into the marriage,

they got into an altercation.

And, in fact, he alleged
that she beat him up

with his own cane

and had to get
a restraining order against her.

He filed for divorce,
and that marriage was over.

There's no question that
she had some personality problems.

She had a really tough time
dealing with other people,

being in the presence of others
in normal circumstances.

She was also known to have
a very hot temper.

As she grew into adulthood,

she was getting arrested
for brawls in bars.

She could go from a normal conversation

to just a violent outrage
at the flip of a switch,

and there was no real telling
when it was going to happen.

I think it kind of grew over time

and maybe got a little bit worse.

Aileen had a criminal history,

which involved crimes from
forgery of checks to battery,

armed robbery, and weapons charges,

so she was not a novice
to the criminal system.

She never really drew
a lot of attention from the police

to herself throughout all these years.

I never thought for a second
she'd kill somebody,

for crying out loud.

Victim number four, the pivotal case.

He had planned on passing out
some bibles along the way.

He had the Bible,
and she did that anyways.

How cold can you possibly be?

Welcome back to
"very scary people."

By the summer of 1990,

Aileen Wuornos had gunned down
three men in cold blood

but left very few clues
on her trail of terror.

She went on her homicidal rampage

before DNA and fingerprint databases

had been fully established,

so Florida investigators
had yet to link the cases.

Before they did figure it out,

Wuornos would slaughter four more people.

Victim number four,
which I call the pivotal case...

Peter siems was a man
living in Jupiter, Florida,

and he was on his way
to drive up to New Jersey

to visit his brother.

He had planned on passing out
some bibles along the way,

so he had them in his trunk.

He had stopped somewhere,
we believe for gas,

and that was where he ran into Aileen.

He had the Bible,
and she did that anyways.

How cold can you possibly be?

That's as cold as you can possibly be.

I think there were a number of factors

that allowed her to get away with this.

One of the biggest
problems investigators faced...

That she was killing people
all over the place.

The first three killings
were in volusia county,

citrus county and pasco county,

and they all used different labs
to do their ballistics testing.

If they had all been sent
to the same lab,

they might have caught it
a little bit earlier.

The vehicles were also dispersed,

and when she abandoned these vehicles,

she would take off the license plate.

She would remove any bumper
stickers or anything

that might identify the car.

She would spray the dashboard
and wheel and door handles.

She'd thoroughly clean the car down.

Aileen did a really good job
of covering her tracks.

They were things that
all slowed down the process.

It just took a long time
to link these cases together.

Victim number five was Troy burress.

My dad, he was a really good person.

He loved family.
He loved pets.

I mean, he had a really good personality.

He was where he wanted to be in life,

and he got a job at gilchrist sausage.

He traveled different places,
made stops for the company.

He was all set to retire.

Usually after his routes,
he would go home.

That night, he was supposed
to be at my house.

He never made it.

Mr. Burress had been out
making deliveries for his company,

and somewhere around Seville,
Florida, on his way back in,

in the afternoon, he disappeared.

I was petrified.

Nobody knows where he's at
or who he's with.

It just wasn't like him to,

you know, just disappear like that.

Aileen had somehow encountered him

and got a ride from him,

and he gave it to her,
not looking for sex at all.

Do you know why this
woman targeted your brother?

I think because he was
a really friendly man

because he did work in sales a lot.

He liked people, and he would...

He loved to talk to his... almost anyone.

And didn't you caution him just that day

- or the day before to...
- The day before.

...not to pick up
hitchhikers?

And I said, "well, you know,
you used to pick up hitchhikers.

You can't do that anymore.
It's too dangerous."

He said, "oh, I know,
but I hate to pass someone up

if they need a ride."

He always said he would
always want his girls

to have help if they needed it.

He was that kind of man.

I went up to ocala,
and we looked on his routes,

you know, the roads that he drove,

and it was 4 days before we found him,

and his body was deteriorating.

His body was found in
the ocala national forest.

Right there by
the pine tree to your left.

I was devastated, the fact that
I couldn't talk to him anymore.

I couldn't see him anymore.

I couldn't call him.

To this day, I have a hard time.

My dad was 50 years old
when he was taken.

He was happy, and then his life
was taken in a horrible,

mean, evil way.

He had two children
and six grandchildren.

He missed them growing up.

This was a case that we would
kind of tie things

together with other departments

because as we were investigating

the death of Mr. Burress,
we found

that there were at least two other cases

involving a .22-caliber killing.

We had a series of meetings
at our headquarters.

And there was a pattern emerging

that individually they hadn't seen.

There were some jaws
that dropped and hit the floor.

One of the things about serial killers...

They're kind of, like, in a chrysalis,

like a butterfly
living in a little chrysalis,

and once they make the first murder,

they carry something from it
to every other murder.

A monthly bulletin came out
from the Florida department

of law enforcement, and in this bulletin,

it had other counties
had unsolved homicides,

and it was there that
the connection was made.

Other counties had homicides
where the crime scenes,

the modus operandi,

the victimology was very similar.

There was a pattern emerging

that individually they hadn't seen.

It became obvious

that these were not
random acts of violence.

One of the
bell-ringers in this whole case

from an investigative point of view

was the weapon used,
which was a .22-caliber pistol,

and it raised
a couple red flags by itself.

In the homicides that I've worked,

it was typically a larger-caliber handgun

like a .357 or a .45
or a 9-millimeter.

The victims were all white,
middle-aged, and older males.

They were all traveling on

or near major roadways
in central Florida.

Their bodies were found in
secluded quasi-rural locations,

and there was a pattern of overkill,

meaning more bullets than
necessary to kill the person.

After they were killed,
their vehicles were taken,

and in each case,

something was missing
from the victim's vehicle.

Several of the
investigators start talking.

They make some phone calls to each other,

and then a task force is put together,

and now things are on track

for discovering who did these murders.

We had a series of multiple
meetings at our headquarters,

and we had a lot of seasoned detectives

that all came together
from multiple counties,

and we would share ideas,
share information.

We were looking for any
connection that we could find.

We didn't know whether it was one

or more people operating together.

All we knew is, there was
a pattern of killings going on,

and we couldn't figure out
how that was occurring.

It was extremely frustrating,

and I can remember
sitting there thinking,

"how come we're not
coming up with anything?"

She was able to
get away with this for a long time

because police initially weren't looking

for somebody like Aileen Wuornos.

Investigators in the first two
think they're looking for a guy.

We just didn't know.

But there was one unique feature.

Every car that we recovered
had the driver's side seat

in the forward-most position,

and what we started thinking
was because of that,

maybe we're looking for somebody
that's smaller in stature.

And police started to
figure out that there had to be somebody

that had the ability to get these victims

close enough to them where that
they could be vulnerable

and be killed and robbed
in these remote locations.

Some of the victims
were pretty large guys.

Who would get in their personal,
intimate space,

who would they let their guard down for?

It's easy today
when you look back, saying,

"hindsight, 20/20, it should
have been common sense."

You know, but it's just that
we have that stereotype,

maybe, if you will, that was,
you know, a barrier to us.

Another tell in this pattern

would be how the victims were found.

Some of them were nude.

There was perhaps some sexual
component to these crimes.

In one of the meetings,
attending was dayle hinman,

who is an FBI-trained criminal profiler.

When we laid all the facts
of these cases that we knew

at that time on the table
for dayle to analyze and review.

She said, "from what I can see here,

you're really looking at,
most likely, a female."

There were some jaws
that dropped and hit the floor.

It was, it was a "wow" moment.

It really was.

Now this started to take
some shape into the fact

that we could be looking for women.

We just didn't know where to look.

We didn't know where to turn.

The biggest break of the case
came months earlier,

back in July of 1990.

We just didn't know it yet.

Initially, Peter siems was
a missing persons case.

No luck sweeping out here this morning.

A witness came forward
and said that they saw two females

operating a car that wrecked.

And that's when
the whole dam started to break.

Victim number six
was Mr. Humphreys.

Richard Humphreys was a retired

military, highly decorated officer.

He was the police chief in a small town.

He'd served there, retired,
and he'd moved to Florida

and took a job with the state
of Florida social services.

And he was going out
and doing home checks,

and somewhere along the way,

something happened to him
on the way back to the office.

He had stopped at a truck
stop to get something to drink

at the end of his work day.

We were able to find on his body

that there was a bruise
on the upper torso,

and we identified this as a bruise

from the barrel of her gun.

It appeared that once he had
purchased that soda,

he got back in his car,

and Aileen got in the passenger side

and put the gun in his ribs
and told him to start driving.

That's a predator.
That's her abducting him.

They get off the interstate.

They ended up at the end of a cul-de-sac,

and that's where Mr. Humphreys

had been shot multiple times
and had been left to die.

At the crime scene, you could
see his pants pockets

were pulled inside-out,
which was clearly suggestive

that the crime of robbery
had also taken place.

Some of this personal property
was found about 4 weeks later

in south lake county.

The final victim was Walter jeno Antonio.

He never arrived back home.

His body was found in Dixie county.

Walter was one of Aileen's tricks,

and she had gotten him out in the woods,

and he was stripped.

He had taken all his clothes off
preparing to have sex,

and he got killed.

And he was just left
on his hands and knees naked

in front of an old oak tree.

She set up a theatre, a scenario.

If you enter into that scenario,
then you could die.

This ended up with seven people dead.

Well, why would she do it?

Pure evil.

By the fall of 1990,

we had these cases
that we were reviewing,

and we were pretty confident,
based upon a number of issues,

that these cases were, in fact, related.

The big thing was, "who was
committing the murders?"

They were needing a break,
and they didn't realize

that the break had already
happened back in July.

July of 1990, we had this case
involving Peter siems.

Initially, Peter siems was
a missing persons case,

not a murder case,

and in fact, they never
did recover his body.

No luck since we've been
out here this morning.

But the investigators realized
there's some similarities

between Peter siems'
and the rest of the cases.

They have no body, but they have a car

and a car that had been crashed,

and there were witnesses to the crash

who saw two women leaving the scene.

A witness came forward and said
that they saw two females

in orange Springs area
operating a car that wrecked.

So the witnesses see this car crash,

and two women get out
yelling at each other.

One of them looks like she's injured.

Instead of accepting help and asking

for the police or an ambulance,

they rushed away in a suspicious fashion.

The detective had the foresight
to go ahead and interview

the witnesses then sit down
with our composite artist...

...and two composites
were generated.

That was how we ultimately
put things together.

A lot of time, just good
old-fashioned cop

instinct that you go with.

Them being in Peter siems' car,

where their little drunken afternoon

out of driving led to
the biggest break in the case

of starting to figure out who it
was that was behind

the .22-caliber gun.

So the group now has
a picture related to the siems case

that might be the person
who's doing all of this.

As we were investigating
the death of Mr. Humphreys,

we found a location
that he had stopped at,

and we took a chance.

We had brought the composites
from the missing persons

case involving Peter siems.

We showed them to the clerk
at the convenience store,

and she said that there were
a couple of girls in there

that resembled the composites
that we had.

All of a sudden, they had two suspects,

and they could put that out to the public

and get help and find them.

That was a big turning point.

We made the decision, "we're
going to have to go public."

"So let's put it out there."

And that's when the whole dam
started to break.

"The following described
suspects may be responsible

for as many as 12 murders
in Florida and Georgia."

Went immediately to the press,

and all over the state
of Florida and elsewhere.

We had composites on the news

and in the papers of two females.

There was literally a feeding frenzy.

This was a huge deal
because there had never been

a female serial killer.

The tall blonde, suspect number one,

is most vocal, a white female
between 20 and 40 years of age

between 5-foot-8 and 5-11.

A woman killing middle-aged
white men with a gun,

- that gets people excited.
- We started to get tips.

She's well-built, a big girl.

But the problem was,
they didn't know where she was.

She has straight blonde hair.

How do you get this person off the street

before they kill again?

What happened at this point is,
we needed a miracle.

- They had her in sight.
- I wasn't born bad.

You guys got it, see,
I'm trying to tell you, man,

they lied.
They lied so bad to you all.

Investigators took a big risk
in that fall of 1990.

They believed the two women
in the composite drawings

were somehow connected
to the serial killings,

but they had no physical evidence,

and they had no idea
who these women were.

Ultimately, it would take
some old-fashioned police work
