a movie in which you are all playing gay

You're on the way across Australia to
assist the Y. One of you is married and

has a child.

And so we have all the politics here. We
have the homophobia. We have people who

write dirty graffiti on the side of your
butt.

We have good old redneck folks who can't
wait to run you out of town. We have

all that. We have a straight guy who
comes on to one of you.

So what else is new?

What's happening here?

Mrs. Doubtfire, Tootsie, La Cage, The
Crying Game.

Johnny Depp is to star in Ed Wood and
play a transvestite, as is Patrick

and Wesley Snipes in Too Wong Fu.

Did you enjoy the experience, gentlemen?

Yeah, for me it was the most enjoyable
experience of my film career, which

hasn't been very long, but it was by far
and away the most enjoyable thing I've

ever done. Terrence?

Well, it was a nightmare, but it was fun
as well.

Let me show, here's a clip of you
putting your makeup on.

How long was the shoot? A couple of
months?

It's a nightmare beginning with the
makeup. Six weeks.

Here you are getting made up.

Well, this looks like fun. This is what,
5 .30 every morning?

Yeah, for two hours.

Uh -huh.

And did you learn anything politically?

This is a movie which, incidentally, is
playing around the nation, opening in a

kind of an evolutionary way.

Look at this.

Well, what is our fascination,
gentlemen, with this kind of activity?

Guy, do you have any clue as to what
would make us...

I don't know. I think people like the
idea of being able to express themselves

in many different ways. And a lot of
people feel repressed in certain ways.

you know, this actually allows some
people to sort of get a slight taste of

it's like to perhaps express yourself,
like I say, in another kind of way.

You agree, Hugo?

Yeah, certainly for me it was...

I was a bit shocked when I put on the
frock for the first time because I

You were not. You loved it. No, I was
shocked.

I was shocked that I felt so good. I
felt very liberated. I had a fantastic

time. Well, aren't you the liberated
young man?

This is interesting.

When your colleague Guy said you loved
it, we got an immediate laugh from the

audience. Like a knowing laugh.

The implication of this is that somehow
all heterosexual males really want to do

this, but we're all afraid to say so.
And so when someone says that out loud,

there's a almost involuntary response
of, ha, ha, ha, gotcha. What is going

on here?

We've had Charlie's aunt.

We've had nothing like a dame. We have
sailors in South Pacific putting

in their T -shirts.

And having just a grand time, that was
fine with us.

We loved that scene.

It's okay if you're in the Navy
somewhere in the South Pacific.

Has the curtain been raised for you
heterosexual males on the issue of cross

-dressing and why it is that we either
are terribly entertained by this or it

draws a good deal of hostility? I ask
you, Terrence.

Well, I think Shakespeare understood it
as fun.

I mean, in most of Shakespeare's
comedies, there's a whole... There's

cross -dressing.

There's always some woman dressed up as
a guy, guy dressed up as a woman.

It's a fun thing.

And the actors, of course, in those
times actually were men. They were

the women's roles anyway.

Yes, so it was all male cast, you know,
in the time of Shakespeare.

But it is... It is fun.

And it is erotic.

There is an erotic area about it in
getting into clothes of the other.

Yes. Now, you had to perform in an
effeminate way, shall we say, in this

huh? Yeah, I don't know about that.
People say, did a more feminine side of

come out?

Isn't it more effeminate? I didn't
feel... Funnily enough, I felt more

masculine. I know that might sound
peculiar, but I don't know exactly what

means. But I suppose I felt...

that I was expressing myself in a more
complete way, or I was expressing a side

of myself that I didn't normally
express, and therefore I was opening up

of myself. So I actually felt...
Terrence, your performances are

You are quite obviously very talented
people. Your list of credit is

confirmation of that.

But Terrence, you did look like a man in
a babushka to me.

And in other words, I didn't see any
particular effort on the part of the

director or anybody, you know,
constructing the film to insist that you

know, somebody in a long heels. Well, I
was different from the other two. I

mean, the other two are drag queens.

The other two are homosexual men who
dress up as women.

My character was a transsexual who is
basically a woman born into a man's

body.

and consequently spent her life trying
to get close to her real gender.

In other words, she's had the full
operation.

You know, she's had her genitals
rearranged to be made into a vagina.

So the point about this character was,
unlike Tootsie and Mrs.

Doubtfire, it wasn't... it wasn't...

I mean, the audience is not meant to
think, ah, it's really a man. It's

Dustin done up as a woman.

I mean, this is a transsexual. This is
like third sex.

And that's what the director wanted. He
wanted a transsexual who is a woman

internally and a man externally.

The movie about which we speak is The
Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the

Desert. This audience just saw the film.

My sense is that most of you liked it.
Is there anybody that didn't like it?

How dare you raise your hand?

Stand up here a second. Before we hear
from you... You're all going to chase me

out. No, we won't. No, we won't. Let's
just share. For those at home, this is a

very much discussed movie, and it
appears to be building in theaters in

cities around our nation.

Obviously, homophobes hate this film.
And incidentally, we should say, not all

politically active gay people are going
to give this five stars.

Not a few gay folks see...

drag as almost like blackface a sort of
mocking sort of confirming the

stereotype of The homosexual a very
diverse community here is your scene

scene from your film You have arrived at
your first stop as you make your way

across Australia.

Oh my dear look who's here

Take that bloody frock off, Felicia.
Don't make it any worse than it is. You

think I'm going to let you walk away
with all the attention?

No chance.

Come on, girls.

Let's go shopping.

Oh, for Christ's sake.

I felt that more than having, than
showing a so -called seamy side of life,

it indicated to me, at least the
character did, bitterness,

jealousy, if you will.

Anger, hostility, I could go on and on.
Three unhappy dudes here. Terrible.

And I don't think that they liked each
other. I think they hated themselves.

At least that's what it showed to me.

It seemed very real to me. I mean, I've
been to Wigstock for a few years. I

don't know if you guys have. It's pretty
amazing.

I loved it. The drag show?

Yeah, it's every Labor Day. It's in New
York City. It's a New York City thing.

And there was a lot of reality.

I mean, the poignancy of it. I mean, it
was funny, but then right at the next

turn, it was very upsetting.

I mean, there's some very upsetting
things going on.

But there was a lot of realness to it.
You know, I mean, I didn't realize you

guys were all heterosexuals, but... You
know, that's okay. You can stay.

Coco Lachine will be performing in drag
for us, one of the numbers from this

film. Also here is Paul Cameron, who
feels that homosexuals

threaten the future of America.

And we will also meet Esther Newton, Ph
.D., in anthropology at SUNY College in

Purchase. She's done a... Good deal of
scholarship on lots of issues relating

gayness, including the definitive study
of Fire Island, how it happened, and how

it came to be one of the premier gay
places in America.

Let's talk about this. Incidentally,
this is a subject not unfamiliar to me.

What's not to love here?

Let me just say that in 1981, I wore
that, that's a skirt on the left.

And everybody tee -heed, laughed,
laughed, ha -ha. It was great fun.

And I did it again in 1988.

And my dear, the hostility, the public
scolding,

the anger. I do believe that something
happened from the beginning of the 80s

the end of the 80s that somehow...

brought out more and more anger and
hostility toward the very thing that you

portray in this much talked about film.
And we'll talk about why this may be

when we come back in just a moment.

Esther Newton, Ph .D. We're talking
about you, Dr.

Newton. You're the anthropologist, SUNY
College at Purchase, New York. And I

mentioned the book that you've written
about Fire Island.

You are a politically active, out -of
-the -closet lesbian person.

Yeah. And so your interest in gayness in
America and elsewhere is more than

just in passing.

You heard our comment here about...

what's going on here with Mrs.
Doubtfire, La Cage, we have Patrick

course, we all remember Tootsie.

Is it in? Is there something about this
activity that fascinates us? And do you

have any insight that we might
understand why it provokes, on the one

laughter, and on the other, we'll meet a
man here in a moment who thinks that

this is the kind of thing that is
contributing to the downfall of America.

you, Dr. Newton.

Would you like me to?

I think it's very different. Mrs.
Doubtfire is very different from what

were doing here.

Because here they were representing gay
men, these two guys were, and he was

representing a transsexual. That's very
different from what was happening in

Mrs. Doubtfire with a supposedly
heterosexual man who, for other

But it's a man in a woman's clothing,
and it entertains us. And it has busted

box office records. Very true.

Charlie's aunt in the 40s came out of
the gate screaming.

I merely wonder, and maybe I'm reaching
here, I merely wonder if there isn't

something that we should know here or
explore in terms of...

our own feelings about sexuality and our
fears, our insecurities, the unspoken

things that make up the psychosexual
personality.

I think these three actors said it
beautifully.

I couldn't say it better myself about
creativity and the different sides we

have. I think there's also a lot of
social upheaval in America now, and

are very anxious about these things.

You think the anxiety level is greater
now than you do? Yes, I do. Would this

the Reagan years that provoked this?

Well, homosexuality has become this very
hot issue that everyone's talking

about, even on Donahue. And people are
very nervous and anxious about it

I think American society has a lot of
problems. We have a lot of problems now

with our families.

are young people, and a lot of this is
being pinned on gay people unjustly.

But it's a very anxious -making issue
right now, yeah.

Rather than focusing on the negative,
I'm wondering, for the actors, I have a

question, if indeed playing women, did
that,

perhaps, doesn't that make you, or did
it make you more sympathetic to women in

general, the understanding of women, and
that could promote harmony in the world

rather than animosity?

I don't feel like I was playing a woman
at all. I was playing a drag queen,

which is a very different thing. And
there was no way in the world I could

pretend to be a woman.

So it gave me a better insight perhaps
into myself and in the sort of things

that I repress in everyday life and the
sort of things that I don't.

And perhaps that makes me a more
complete person. I don't know. So in

sense, it might be contributing to the
harmony of the world, but not in my

understanding of women, not really.

I'd like to know the one with the silver
hair. Did you feel like RuPaul when you

had that hair on when you first got off
the bus?

Paul.

Oh, no. Who has the big do?

By the bus?

Yeah. With the pink wig? Yes.

I actually hadn't seen RuPaul until
after we did the film, but I think

fantastic.

Here you are, the three of you in
character, sitting around getting to

other from Priscilla.

Queen of the Desert.

We're implugging our curling wands and
going bush, Felicia.

Why would you possibly want to leave all
this glamour for a hike into the middle

of nowhere?

Do you really want to know?

Desperate.

Well, ever since I was a lad, I've had
this dream.

A dream that I now, finally, have a
chance to fulfil.

And that is?

To travel to the centre of Australia.

Climb King's Canyon, as a queen, in a
full -length Gaultier sequin, heels, and

tiara.

Great.

That's just what this country needs.

Yes.

I just want to say, I don't know how
much preparation you guys did. I know

you're probably on a close set, but did
any of you go out, and especially

Terrence, go out and learn what it felt
like to actually live with the wig?

The director is a young genius. He's
also a sadist.

He insisted that before we start
shooting the movie that we all get

and went out onto the streets of Sydney.

And so, you know, the last Saturday
night before we started shooting, that's

what we did.

And it was a very enlightening
experience, I have to say. You did a

job of each of you played very different
characters in very different

situations. None of you were
condescending or the obvious stereotypes

homosexuality or transsexualism. And I
was just wondering where that each came

from in each of you, friends that you
had or experiences you had on your own.

I think...

Sometimes depending on the characters
you play in a movie it you know you can

either draw on Your observations from
the past or people that you know

specifically. I mean for me the
character that I played was a

personality traits of People that I know
and also people that I have known and

also you know your imagination creating
something like that And you're right.

You've got it. You do have to be careful
of Becoming condescending or when we

come back Coco Lachine will perform as I
promised for us some of the questions

that I think should be addressed here.
First of all, you had no hesitation

these roles.

You don't think you'll be typecast.

We might ask, why three straight guys to
do these roles?

Lots of gay actors out there willing to
do this work.

Does your...

make it easier to sell tickets?

I don't know. I'm not certainly
ascribing any false motives to you. But

some of the questions raised by yet
another film in which males dress as

I speak of Priscilla, the queen of the
desert. And the song from that same

Well, Paul Cameron, how did you like
that? Were you entertained by that?

No, not really.

Tell us, you are chairman of the Family
Research Institute in Washington, D .C.

You believe that homosexuals threaten
the future of America. Do I understand

your position?

Yeah, and in fact, it partially answers
the question you asked a couple of

segments ago.

Why is it that hostility is slowly
growing toward this kind of thing?

I think an awful lot of people out there
now can see the cliff.

We've been going the wrong direction for
a number of years.

And hey, there is a cliff over there.

And we're about to hit it. We're about
to hit the wall, the cliff, the end of

our civilization.

It's still ahead.

This isn't going to kill us.

But notice what's happening here.

Notice that...

Even as in the movie, which I thought
was fairly accurate and perceptive.

Here's this fellow who decides to come
out on national TV to tell his parents,

listen, you wasted that part of your
life you spent on me. Here I am.

I'm not going to hold up my end of the
sky.

I'm going to live for me.

And I'm going to do something really
wacko and help to encourage all the

people out there that are disturbed, who
more often than not are men rather than

women. And I deal with these people,
Phil.

And I see the children.

Your program, unfortunately, is going to
stimulate probably a couple of thousand

men to go a little closer to the edge.
Some of them will start to drag.

And then others will have the operation.

And behind that, wait, one more point.
Behind that, there are going to be tens

of thousands of children that are going
to have their lives really hurt.

And if you could see these kids.

As adults or as children.

And in part, the movie dealt with it.

But I want to assure you that almost no
child can see his father or mother

transform this way without being deeply
disturbed, deeply distressed.

And I'm sorry, you've done a lot of good
things in your life. This is not one of

them.

Do the actors have any response to this?

Pardon?

Here's a scene that you will probably
not like.

Terrence Stamp, whose movie credits are
very impressive. Superman 1 and 2,

you're the real McCoys, young guns.

You're either a bad guy, a macho,
somebody. You've played a lot of

I think it would have been a blessing
had they been quarantined early on. Now

think they ought to be socially isolated
to some degree because in the latest

survey, the largest survey ever done by
homosexuals, one out of every nine says

that they lie to have sex with other
people who don't know they're HIV

Do we make a good couple or what?

Yes. Dr.

Cameron, I'm sorry you give me a

I can't believe that you believe what
you're really saying. The end of

civilization, people thought the Waltz
would be the end of civilization at one

time, or Elvis Presley.

Coco is on the board of directors of
many corporations, raises thousands of

dollars for charity. I don't see how she
threatens anyone.

I'll remind you that actually it's just
the end of our civilization.

Remember in the end of Rome, a lot of
the cross -dressing occurred.

Before the French Revolution, same kind
of a game.

And now we know it's no longer just kind
of a farce.

Now we're looking at genuinely large
numbers of people being tempted by this

foolishness, going into the lifestyle,
dying as a consequence.

And it really isn't very amusing.

I don't know whether this fellow is
going to live very long, but he probably

won't. Did you see the movie? Were you
watching it with us? Because that movie

was one of the best. I can't imagine why
Americans can't make that kind of

movie. I watched it, and I wanted to
actually say that Terrence made such a

quiet dignity to that character that
actually humanized transsexuals. And I'm

actually going to say this. I have a lot
of friends. that are transsexuals, both

male to female, female to male, and
they're the neatest people. And the

transvestites on the show, they humanize
them. I mean, how can you say that?

We're supposed to be like this leave -it
-to -beaver society. You live for your

mom, you live for your dad, you don't do
anything to make yourself happy.

What rock did you crawl out from under?

Humanizing people.

Everybody who does good or bad is a
human.

But if you humanize them in the
Hollywood sense, And there is a

between the media and Hollywood, a part
of it, academia and the government to

destroy the American family.

And this is a step, a small step in that
direction. If you saw the clients that

I have, if you saw their children, you
would be nowhere near as sanguine as you

just now said. Coco wanted to say.

I just want to comment on something that
this gentleman sitting next to me,

whatever his name is, I didn't catch it
earlier.

But...

Thank you. I hope you sell a lot of
this.

You need it.

Dr. Cameron said earlier that my parents
would be disappointed.

Unfortunately, they're not here to
refute you. However, my parents were

intelligent, and what makes them
different from who you are is they have

unconditional love.

If you think that I probably will not
live very long, then maybe my little

life that you think that I will have is
probably more productive than what you

have, the kind of hate that you
perpetrate all over the country.

No, no. I just wanted to say, unlike
you...

Terrence's performance, I actually
thought he was more beautiful than the

gentlemen. And he also didn't over
glamorize. So I identified with him as

being a woman. I could tell that he was
the transsexual that was performing.

Stonewall, if San Francisco was the
political capital of gayness in America,

certainly Cherry Grove became the place
of summer fun, activity, socializing,

how you feel about those who would
criticize within the gay community.

This kind of minstrel show drag is a.

is merely throwing a strike to the
homophobes who see the gay community in

stereotypical way.

I don't see it that way.

I see drag as part of the genius of the
gay community.

And as a woman, I have some feelings
about some...

I thought the drag in this movie was
wonderful, but there were some moments

women were portrayed that I didn't
appreciate.

Oh, the business with the Filipino wife?

I thought that was racist. I thought it
was... Why use

her that way to establish that Bob is
a...

As a nice guy. Bob is the guy who hits
on Terrence or Terrence's character.

Right, right. I thought it was
unnecessary.

Why? Why do that? Or even in the bar in
the first scene, why did... They made a

woman was the one who said, oh, you
stink to Terrence. You know, like, we

want your kind around here.

You know, why do that? So Bob is married
to a cold wife.

My wife doesn't understand me, not
unlike the stereotypical guy at the bar.

And he makes a move on Terrence. And you
see that as sexist?

Well, she was meant to be such a slut
and crazy and, you know, why?

Uh -huh. Here, Paul Cameron might want
to review once again. Here they are

performing. Here are these three, this
merry trio of music makers, all in

two drag queens and a transsexual,
Australia, and here's the show, or part

it. Whoa.

I can't drive it.

Right in front of my face, and I just

cannot hide it.

It's innocent.

Who's hurt?

As I point out in my book, The Gay
Nineties, what's happening here is, you

One of the things that's happening here
is we know, even with heterosexuality

being the norm, that perhaps as many as
15 % of men already are tempted in a

homosexual direction.

And all you need to do is push a little
bit more, and that envelope will keep

getting larger and larger.

And what will happen is what has
happened in other societies before us.

not unique. This has happened 18 times
before, if you believe the UN analysis.

Or you believe Petrin Sorokin, chairman
of the Department of Sociology at

Harvard. Eighteen times before, men have
said, hey, we don't have to control

sexuality. It'll never get it. It's
going to get us. It's getting us right

There's always been homosexual men. It's
just more evident now. What is your

suggestion to young homosexual people to
get them back on the straight and

narrow? Well, first of all, my same
suggestion to people that are shooting

drugs. By all means, stop.

Cease to fist. You're headed toward
death.

Stop it.

Same thing I say to smokers. Stop it.

Do you feel that you could do something
about it?

I've had about as much success as
others.

Sometimes I can.

Most of the time, unfortunately, my
field, I'm a psychologist, most of the

we cannot help people who have problems
that are severe as these.

But people can often, between working
hard and working at it, help themselves

with the aid of others. It's not a
disease, you know? Yeah, I'm wondering.

What's your wives or girlfriends think
about you dressing up?

Have they said anything to you?
Gentlemen.

Yeah.

Well,

my partner, she was a bit shocked at
first, I think, because just the, you

the look of it was a bit shocking. But
she kind of, she came out with this that

night. We went out and dragged and she
went home a bit earlier than we did. But

she eventually got used to it.

Were you hit on?

When you went out in drag?

I was a little bit.

You were?

I think I wouldn't remember.

Tell us, Guy, what happened?

There was a guy that kept insisting on
buying me drinks, and he wanted to know

what I wanted to drink, and I said, no,
you choose the drink, and I'll tell you

if I'll drink it or not.

And I was playing the character when I
was out, so, I mean, I was being very

obnoxious.

And we'll be back in a moment.

Some like it hot. Jack Lemmon, Tony
Curtis.

I'm going to break his heart when he
finds out I can't marry him. So it's

to break sugar's heart when she finds
out I'm not a millionaire.

come because he is not a credible

He's been expelled from the American
Psychological Association.

And he has been declared not a credible
witness by a federal district judge.

And really, he knows nothing about drag,
and there's no reason to have him here.

No matter what Mr.

Cameron's credentials are, I think it's
unfortunate that people like him decide

to try to divide us on our differences
