Of all the years I've been in wrestling, which spans three decades now, that really

was the McMahon Austin feud was the hottest, most emotional feud between two wrestlers

that I've ever been a part of, and it just clicked.

There's a lot of war between both of them, you know.

They don't get along at all and I don't think either one of them have a lot of love for each other.

Our business is full of huge bodies, huge egos, and when two huge egos get nose to nose

and you got a guy like Stone Cold that just says,

the hell with the boss and makes the boss the target, which has never been done,

then the sparks flew and it was an incredible thing to watch.

Two men, one a seasoned promoter and entrepreneur, the other an ambitious athlete.

The unforgettable war between them surpassed anything that had preceded it.

Their conflict changed the face of sports entertainment, Austin and McMahon.

This is their story.

Vince McMahon is the most successful practitioner in sports entertainment.

He began with a modest northeastern professional wrestling circuit he bought from his father

and began producing and broadcasting his television programs nationally.

For years, he served as an announcer and only wrestling insiders knew he actually owned the company.

Mr. McMahon has been consistently before the cameras on a national basis for over two decades,

making his on-camera career one of the longest in television history.

Mr. McMahon is a devoted father to his two children, Shane and Stephanie, and his wife Linda joins the rest of the family working at the WWF.

Stone Cold Steve Austin was born and raised in Victoria, Texas. His career in wrestling began without a lot of fanfare.

I was working on a freight dock, loading unloading trucks. I saw a little ad for a wrestling school on a TV.

A few months later I had my first match. That particular match was $40.

Austin began moving up the wrestling ladder.

I paid my dues, you know, that's what you gotta do.

Austin's experiences in the wrestling world before the WWF were not easy.

I dig a ditch for you. All you gotta do is call me if you don't like what I'm doing.

Call me and fire me to my face.

When I tore my tricep and Japan off my arm, I got fired by WCW over the phone.

Hardship and setbacks only made Austin work harder.

But ain't nobody in the world ever made me quit at nothing in my life.

Steve had a history of trouble with promoters or with his bosses.

I never asked him how he felt about being given a character when he came in here,

but it didn't last very long and he certainly changed it.

And I just don't think he wanted to do it.

And I think that was the beginning of Stone Cold Steve Austin as a character doing whatever he wanted to do.

basically giving the finger to the office and saying I'm putting my black

tights back on I'm gonna be what I want to be and what I want to be is Stone

Cold Steve Austin and that's the bottom line because Stone Cold said so and he

would cut a promo.

like that. And he made these things up that now are on millions of t-shirts all over the

world. And that is a huge talent that Steve's. And he got to wear his black boots and black

tights. And I think that that was the beginning of the animosity, if you will, between Steve

get bigger than the business, and Steve, I think at times, approaches that.

And that's got to be something that a Vince McMahon doesn't like.

Something was happening as Austin's quest for the WWF title continued

and WrestleMania 14 approached.

It was a natural pair of people to have a conflict and a very dramatic conflict.

And it seemed like the more Mr. McMahon was interested in keeping a leash on Steve Austin,

the more Steve Austin would pull away and the more successful Steve got,

the harder Mr. McMahon tried.

loved Steve and wanted him to get better and better and better and bigger and bigger and bigger

and it was a vicious circle and it almost was out of control.

and this is his company, but as Austin began to become more popular

and he really started to take control of his destiny.

I think what you saw was, I don't know if jealousy is the right word, if it was a power struggle.

But I think it really started and it started to heat up and it really reached a boiling point at WrestleMania.

And folks, it don't get no bigger than this.

It's about earning the opportunity to wrestle in the main event at a WrestleMania.

This was the end of Austin's long struggle for the championship and the beginning of a new

attitude on the part of Vince McMahon, an attitude that would surprise many of the fans watching that night.
