[Iqbal] It was intended to be fun,

All I ever wanted was the truth
as to why he did what he did.

[man] Iqbal had his bit on the side

and he was quite happy with that
until he got found out.

[Anisah] Why, why did he betray me?
How do I feel about what he did?

Iqbal was arrested for
five offenses of rape.

I did, you know,
mistreat her and I accept that.

It was on the basis of a betrayal.
It was lies.

- I did actually feel sorry for her.
- [Iqbal] I didn't stab Anisah.

[man 1] Oh, he was panicking.

[Iqbal] I didn't kidnap anyone.

I kept saying to him,
"She's very dangerous."

I actually feel like he raped me.

She was very volatile.

[woman 1] Anisah's goal
was to ruin Iqbal's life.

[man 2] She had a big plan.

[typing]

She wanted Mr. Mohammed to suffer
just as she had suffered.

There's a genuine risk to me
of a physical risk.

[man 3] If you die here,
how do I prove my innocence?

Anisah Ahmed's passion was
to exact revenge upon Mr. Mohammed.

This woman was making him think that
the only way out was to end his life.

[Iqbal] I feel weak saying it...

but the truth is,
I was really scared of her.

[ominous music]

[ominous electronic music]

My name is Kevin Parsons.

I was a detective sergeant
at Oxford CID, Thames Valley.

The office received a call that

there had been a kidnap and knife attack.

[PC French] PC 529 in, um, Wheatley,
where there's been an alleged stabbing.

All I know is I'm dealing with a GBH.

Name of the victim is Anisah Ahmed.

[PC French] If we look inside the vehicle,

on the front seat, there is clearly
bloodstains on a white pillow.

We're not gonna delay
taking her to hospital.

- Sure. I just need to get a name of...
- Yeah, if you can do that.

The offender. That's all I need.

She had been threatened with a knife.

She was made to drive 15 minutes

outside of Oxford to a small village.

She's then stabbed by,
for want of a better term, a hitman.

[DC Oliver]
This is a very violent incident.

Potentially, we have an offender out there

that we have to get in
as soon as possible.

[PC French] Have you got
any description at all?

I don't know who the people were,

- but it's all connected to my ex.
- What's your ex's name?

- Iqbal Mohammed.
- Iqbal Mohammed.

[legal official]
Mr. Treasurer, I present Iqbal Mohammed.

[treasurer] Mr. Mohammed,
in the name of the Masters of the Bench,

I call you to the degree of the utter bar.

[Iqbal] I was chosen to be
in a documentary

about young barristers
by chance.

I remember for the first time
when I put the wig on,

made of white horse hair,
I thought it was never really

designed for Asian people like me.

It took some time to get used to

my podgy little face under it, but
when I wore the robes for the first time,

it was definitely something
that made me feel really proud.

So I practice as a barrister
from chambers based in Birmingham.

I didn't think when I was young
I would be a barrister.

I thought I'd be working in
the coal mines in the West Midlands.

[loud chattering]

People do know about me
from this documentary.

[dings]

I gather that that's
where she first saw me.

Her name was Anisah Ahmed.

She must have been 23 or 24,

and around that time I was 30.

[typing]

She was working as a lawyer

and she wanted to move into the bar
and she wanted a bit of help with that.

We met up in late 2013.

She was obviously quite glamorous.
I mean, I liked her.

[message notification]

We hit it off and we exchanged messages
and started flirting with each other.

[message notification]

And after just a couple of meetings,
we started a sexual relationship.

[suspenseful music]

[notification dings]

[Gary] I first got to know Anisah

when she approached chambers
to start sending work into chambers

on personal injury
stroke clinical negligence cases.

[Iqbal] Gary is my clerk.

Clerks work with barristers
in organizing their practice

and dealing with clients and so on.

[Gary] It was strange because

her first approach was to say,
"Would Iqbal Mohammed

be available to take on this case?"

[Iqbal] She told him that
she had a lot of work,

very valuable work, and she
was prepared to send it all his way.

She never actually told me
directly that she knew Iqbal,

and also Iqbal had never mentioned
to me that he had known Anisah.

[message notification tone]

[birdsong]

[Iqbal] I was completely
taken by her,

and overwhelmed, I suppose,
by the attention

that she was giving me and
showing me and she seemed really amazing.

It was intended to be fun,
no commitments, no strings attached.

[notification tone]

But then something went wrong.

[notification tone]

Anisah discovered that I was married.

[tense music]

When Iqbal first told me about Lubna,
I was ecstatic, couldn't wait to see her.

We flew to Istanbul for their wedding,

and it was an amazing, beautiful day.

[Iqbal] Anisah didn't know about Lubna.

She didn't know about Lubna at all
until Lubna posted a picture of us online.

Anisah found that post
and discovered that I was married.

She was really furious.

She said that,
"I'll throw acid on her face."

I'd had enough at this point
and I said I'm not meeting you again.

It's finished.

- [intense music]
- [notification tone]

Anisah had contacted me
at the beginning of December.

And she told me that she'd been
having a relationship with Iqbal.

- [typing]
- [notification tone]

She writes that she needs a break

before she ends up
killing herself over this shit.

I did actually feel sorry for her.

[typing on phone]

She then started getting aggressive.

[typing]

She was very volatile.

She says to me, "It was a relationship,

it's gone sour
and I want to make him pay."

[tense music]

[Saima] It was a weekend morning

and there was lots of messages from Lubna.

She said, "Log into your Facebook
and have a look at your messages."

So I did. I logged into my Facebook.

[Iqbal] Anisah had sent Lubna

all the messages, pretty much,

that had been sent between me and Anisah.

She sent 21 messages through Facebook.

She sent them to Lubna.

She sent them to Lubna's mom.

Lubna's uncle.

She sent them to my cousin
and my little sister as well.

I saw that my brother had been
seeing another woman.

I-- I was in complete shock.

It was very humiliating
because they were sent to everyone.

Nobody was spared.

And, um, it was really hard to believe.

I had to tell Lubna the truth, so I did.

You know, I admitted everything.

When I read these messages,
I was shouting,

I was crying my eyes out.

It was such a worry for me
and my mom as well.

I felt devastated that
I'd been that callous towards

somebody that I really loved.

The betrayal of it,
the deception of it.

Because I made my bed and I lay in it.

Um...

Lubna... Lubna left.

I don't blame Anisah.
I'm not pretending that she made me do it

or she chased me or wore me down.

No, it was-- it was my decision.
I own that.

I kept saying to him,
"Iqbal, how can you do this?

How can you put any of us,
including Lubna, through this?"

[emotional music]

[notification tone]

[disturbing music]

Anisah had said
quite vile things about Lubna.

Threatened to throw acid on her face.

And I wanted to show Lubna that I cared.

So I sent Anisah a message,

saying to her, "Well, look,
two can play at that game.

I've got videos and pictures of you.

And I can send them to your family."

I was telling her to leave me alone.
I said, "Fuck off and die,

because I do not want
to hear from you again."

I first met Mr. Mohammed
sort of early January 2015.

He felt that he was being
harassed by Anisah Ahmed.

But there was more to it than that.

Mr. Mohammed had a wife in all of this.

Direct threats had been made against her.

So I had an hour-long conversation
with Anisah

and all I said was that her conduct
could be interpreted as harassment.

But she was so adamant
that she'd been wronged.

So all my harassment warning seemed to do,

in this case, was inflame the situation.

[notification tone]

I was scared of Anisah.

It was on the basis of a betrayal.
It was lies.

- [man] I understand that.
- He never told me the truth.

Had I known, would I have let him
record everything? No.

Inside of me, I had to
also think, "Was this all true?"

Her agenda was revenge.

I actually feel like he raped me.

I do truly feel like that.

My brother had been seeing another woman.

He'd had an extramarital affair,

and it wasn't
a thing of which he was proud.

I mean, he-- he did wrong.

She said it herself,
she was angry, she was livid.

When she emailed, it felt like
she was trying to destroy me.

[notification tone]

[intense music]

[Gary] So after a while,

I'd heard that the Head of Chambers
had been approached by Anisah.

[notification tone]

Anisah Ahmed had now alleged

that he'd sent sexually threatening emails

from his work email account,

and that he'd threatened her

that he would release intimate videos
of Anisah Ahmed to family friends.

You can see an anger
and a venom in those messages.

[Iqbal] They were abusive.
They were threats.

They were very similar to the message
that I sent her, which I never denied,

even to my chambers, to the police,
whoever it was, I accepted I sent it.

But her argument was going to be,

"Well, if he sent this one message,
which he admits,

he must have sent
the other messages as well, then."

There was a lot of murmurs and rumors

and talks going around the clerk's room.

I'd heard through the grapevine

that there was gonna be
some kind of investigation.

We had access to what allegations
had been made against Iqbal.

Sexual allegations.

I suppose, inside of me,
I had to also think, "Was this all true?"

[Iqbal] My Head of Chambers
had no choice

but to say that he was going to suspend me
because quite clearly,

the emails were extremely serious.

[tram wheels squeal]

What Anisah Ahmed does next
is interesting.

She'd put together an application
for a non-molestation order.

And part of the evidence
in her non-molestation order

were the emails
purporting to be from Mr. Mohammed.

Mr. Mohammed was absolutely shocked

when an interim injunction
was authorized against him.

[Iqbal] I was stunned.

This is an injunction,
a really serious thing,

but at the same time,
it's really quite chilling.

Because the more immediate concern is,

"Well, am I actually going to
be even practicing as a barrister?"

Because the word gets out that
I'm a chiseling con artist

that's had an injunction made against him
and my clients run a mile.

[suspenseful music]

[Saima]
We could see that something was not right.

[Iqbal] I was frightened.
I was really scared.

[Saima] But there's one thing
that was for sure,

that we were gonna stand by him
and we were gonna stick by him,

we were gonna support him
because I know my brother.

I could see that he was telling the truth.

Anisah Ahmed had alleged to
Mr. Mohammed's Chambers

that he had sent her
sexually threatening emails,

all from his work account.

Head of Chambers had appointed an expert
in forensic analysis of computers.

And, lo and behold, it was proven that

no such email had ever emanated from

Mr. Mohammed's email account at work.

[Iqbal] At last, I felt like
I was being listened to.

The emails were categorically false.

I knew he was telling the truth,
um, and it was very clear,

uh, what she was doing.

[DS Bennett]
For me, that was a key moment.

She'd received a harassment warning, um,

and yet she went on to fabricate emails.

That was the point when I knew that

Anisah had got to be
interviewed under caution.

My colleague and I traveled
down from Birmingham to Oxford.

And then we attended
Anisah's home address.

Knocked at the door. And I arrested her.

And it was almost as though,
you did get that sort of suspicion

that she'd been waiting for us.

And then we drove
to Abingdon Police Station.

All I did was speak out
and tell his wife and his family,

and then he sends me
those two abusive messages

referring to me as a whore.

I wasn't revenging at him, I just...

All I ever wanted was the truth
as to why he did what he did.

Why? Why did he betray me?
How do I feel about what he did?

You know, making all these
sexual videos and photos.

And then me later finding out
he was already married.

She said she'd been wronged

and that she wanted Mr. Mohammed to suffer
just as she had suffered.

Yeah, I am upset with what he's done.
Of course I am, rightly so.

But even then, I don't want a revenge,

I just wanted him to delete them.

That's why I felt I had to go to Chambers,
because he wouldn't apologize

and he wouldn't delete them.
That's all I had asked for.

[officer] Thank you.

She knew that I didn't keep
pictures and videos of her. At all.

She sent me loads of things
and I deleted them.

[DS Bennett] Basically,
you made a complaint

that Iqbal was sending you emails
from his work address.

None of those emails

were ever sent by Iqbal

from his address.

They never left the chambers servers.

Do you have any idea

who would have forged,
for want of a better word,

Iqbal's email address and cloned it
in order to send those emails to you?

I accept having done that,
but only that and nothing else.

She was charged with harassment.

But I didn't get justice.

There actually wasn't a trial,
and that charge was not proceeded with.

It was frustrating. It was disappointing.
I couldn't believe it.

[notification tone]

After a couple of months,
Lubna returned back home.

Lubna coming home
was a really important thing for me.

[Saima] Iqbal had made
a big, a huge mistake,

but she loved her husband

and she was going to
stick with him and stand by him.

[Iqbal] I was really grateful.

I really needed Lubna back,
and she came back.

[notification tone]

She was somebody that supported me
and gave me the courage

and the encouragement
that I needed to fight back.

Anisah's campaign didn't stop.

It didn't drop a gear,
it actually carried on.

At every opportunity, social media,

real life, telephone, email,

text message, in person, friends,

family, work, colleagues,
they were all being targeted.

[Saima] He said,
"She would go to any extent

to try and harm me, harm my family,

just to get to me, really."

We sold our cars
and bought new ones

because she'd made
a fake complaint to the police

that she'd seen my car outside her house.

So he did say, "If anybody calls you

and tries to get your address

or find out any information about me,
just put the phone down."

I had to change my phone number.
Lubna changed her phone number twice.

We had cameras fitted.

So it was a huge, huge impact on my life.

The lengths that she's gone to
with the fabricated emails,

um, it just makes me think that
she has some genuine...

there's a genuine risk to me,
of a physical risk.

On 5th June, I was working in Chambers

and a colleague asked me

to come down to a meeting room.

So I stopped what I was doing
and went downstairs.

And when I opened the door
to the conference room,

there was my Head of Chambers and two men.

And my Head of Chambers very calmly said,

"I've got here two police officers
who are going to arrest you."

And, um,
the two officers then arrested me.

[Nisar] There was five counts of rape.

And of course, it was
a course of conduct over a period of time

and that in itself,
in my view, made it more serious.

[DS Bennett] Mr. Mohammed was arrested

and it transpired that
Anisah had made these allegations

against Mr. Mohammed
only three days after I had arrested her.

You know, he referred to himself as
a sexual master because I knew nothing.

So anything sexually
he wanted doing on him, I did.

I actually feel like
he raped me to the ex--

I do truly feel like that
because it was not consented to.

I was pushing him off me.

[Saima]
That must have been so humiliating.

It must have broken him
to go through that--

to have gone through that.

[Nisar] I was disappointed to find out
that he'd been humiliated

by being arrested
in the presence of his colleagues

and they, um, frog-marched him
to the police station from there.

I've no issue with people saying that
you are not without blame

when it comes to
the relationship that I had with Anisah.

But I didn't rape her.

I didn't kidnap anyone.

I didn't stab Anisah.

[PC French] This is where the victim is
saying that she's been attacked.

I didn't deserve to end up in jail.

Nobody deserves that.

I feel absolutely sexually abused by him.

She is really dangerous.

[Iqbal] She was quite nasty. She said that
I was a complete fucking bastard

and I'd used her

and that I would suffer,
I would suffer as a result of that.

You know, he schemed everything.
He lied to me so much

and really made...
really gained that control

and then just manipulated
and absolutely sexually abused me.

That's how I feel with what he did.

Iqbal was arrested for
five offenses of rape.

They were over a period of time

and took place in Taunton,

Manchester, Swindon and Birmingham.

[Iqbal] The custody sergeant
took my stuff. Took my DNA.

Another officer walked me to the cell.

Yeah.

Walls.

[cell door locks]

I have a kind of,
almost a nauseating sickness feeling.

She had now said that I'd raped her.
Many, many times.

And not, "Oh, well,
there's miscommunication", no.

"He held me down and he raped me.
And he forced me."

I really don't want to say
I ever was afraid of Anisah.

I feel weak saying it.

And it's a little bit humiliating.

But the truth is
I was really scared of her.

Because I know how the system works.
And the system is not infallible.

I mean, this is completely ridiculous,

but it's possible that
a judge accepts it as true.

It was difficult for me.

It was difficult.

I wanted to speak to Lubna
and obviously tell her that I was okay,

but I was not allowed to speak to her,

and later on I discovered it was
because they were searching my home.

Three police officers going through
every nook and cranny, every sock,

every pair of boxer shorts, every drawer,

every cupboard of our home.

And Lubna was told to wait outside
while they did that.

That was a difficult night for us.

It was difficult. Very difficult.

[groans]

[haunting cello music]

I can remember speaking to
Mr. Mohammed after he'd been locked up.

And, well, you could hear
the distress in his voice.

I remember thinking about
how you could kill yourself in a cell.

How would I do it?

I felt that...

that...

dying would be quite good,
quite a bit better than carrying on.

Sorry.

[crying]

It's just heartbreaking seeing
somebody so strong

and saying something like
they want to end their life.

I remember thinking that there's
no way you can hang yourself,

and I was looking all around for...

you know, a way to do that.

[pensive music]

Oof.

It just shows you the level of damage
that she was doing and...

how much it was breaking him.

And he's such a strong person.

He's not--
He's not an emotional person.

You know, he doesn't cry very easily

and he doesn't give up very easily.

And to think that...

this woman was making him think

that the only way out was to end his life.

After he was interviewed, he was
released from the police station.

[Iqbal] They didn't charge me.

I was bailed and I was allowed to leave.

But they said
they'd interview me properly later

and only then would they decide whether
or not they were going to charge me.

It had got to such a desperate point

because it just was
such a cumulative sort of impact on him.

It was just one thing after the next.

[Iqbal]
She starts signing up to counseling.

She says that she's got PTSD.

She's suffering from flashbacks.

Extreme anxiety.

And then, for the first time...

she tells the police
I'm sending her death threats.

"I'm going to kill you.

I'm going to stab you so many times."

The argument she's making here
in these messages is that,

"Look, he is so dangerous, that if I don't
withdraw these allegations of rape,

he'll kill me."

[intense music]

I was interviewed
when I was originally arrested,

and then there was a big delay
in my complete interview,

and I was desperate to clear my name.

So me and Nisar, we drove down to Swindon
for my police interview.

When we arrived at the station,
I said to Iqbal, "Give me your car keys."

And he said, "What for?"

And I said, "Just in case I need to
get back to Birmingham without you."

He said to me, "What do you think
is going to happen today?"

And in the back of my mind,
I was thinking, "Is he innocent?"

There's a possibility that you could
get charged and remanded in custody.

That-- That really terrified me.

I had not thought about that at all.

But I remember my heart jumped.

This interview was make or break.

This interview was about whether
I get charged with rape or not.

Oh, he was panicking.

It was a situation
of life and death for him.

And clearly, these officers were ready.

They really knew their brief
and they were no pushover.

But I said to him, I said,
"Let's go there to change their mind."

[Iqbal] I took that quite literally

and I prepared
a lever arch file of about 350 pages.

And a lot of the evidence that I had,
most of the evidence I had,

was Anisah's own words.

On 12th November, 2014,
she said that she was raped.

Now remember,
all of these rapes are with force.

She was forced and she was raped.

But just days after that,
Anisah's messages are normal,

they're ordinary.

Even flirty.

[notification tone]

[Nisar] Mr. Mohammed
was able to demonstrate that

if this was a series of rapes,

then why is it that she
continued to meet Mr. Mohammed?

[notification tone]

[Iqbal] She says that
she was sexually assaulted.

But why would you meet that person
a second time,

and a third time,
and a fourth time, and then,

three months after being
raped and sexually assaulted,

send him a message saying,
"How's the relationship going for you?

What do you think? Do you like me?"

Anisah was saying the rapes took place
after I'd coerced and forced her,

but I was absolutely crystal clear

that these are complete fabrications.

After a seven-hour interview, I felt
I'd completely blown apart her story.

[Nisar] I could feel the relief

and I then started to think,

"Iqbal, you're innocent.

You're not guilty.
Don't worry. We're going back home."

[Iqbal] And I did go home.

But it wasn't over.

I now had to wait to see

if I'd done enough to clear my name.

[ominous music]

[DS Parsons] Sunday, 12th July, 2015,

the office received a call that

there had been a kidnap and knife attack.

There's a serious injury involved.

Victim's name, Anisah Ahmed.

[PC French] Victim is alleging that
she's been victim of a stabbing.

- Have you got any description at all?
- It's all connected to my ex.

- What's your ex's name?
- Iqbal Mohammed.

Iqbal Mohammed.

We've got a female with a single
laceration wound to the right thigh.

Police were called to
a really serious incident

where a vulnerable female
had been stabbed.

They turn up and they speak to paramedics.

We're not gonna delay
taking her to hospital.

Sure. I need to get
the name of the offender.

- Yeah, you can do that.
- It's all I need.

Literally, all I need.

[DC Oliver] And also Anisah Ahmed
in the back of an ambulance

who's telling us that
she has a stab wound to her leg.

I just need to get the name of
the person that's attacked you.

I don't know who the people were,
but it's all connected to my ex.

- What's your ex's name?
- Iqbal Mohammed.

Iqbal Mohammed, okay.

He made me send an email to Swindon CID.

- Okay.
- Retracting my complaint against him.

You don't know who attacked you today?

- No, I don't.
- Okay.

[DS Parsons] Anisah's initial account was

she had been leaving her house
to drive to Wiltshire.

She was forced to stop by a car.

Someone got out of the other car,
got in her car,

and then told her she had to
follow the other car, which she did.

She was, at that point,
being threatened with a knife.

She followed the other car
to a small village

just outside Oxford,

where she was forced to
get out of the car,

told to send an email

withdrawing her rape allegations
against Iqbal.

She refused.

She's then stabbed by,
for want of a better term, a hitman.

She then sent the email,

and the offender left.

After the stabbing, she managed to drive

about 500 meters into the village

before she flagged someone down for help.

- And she was waving
- [PC French] Okay.

- And so I pulled over.
- Okay.

And said, "What's wrong?"
and she said, "I don't know where I am."

And she said, "I've been stabbed."

And I could see she had a gash on her leg.

Okay.

- [DS Parsons] Where?
- About here, I'd say, on her leg.

And I could see blood.

Loads of blood.

The wound was horrendous.

Anisah herself reported it
to be 15 centimeters long.

It's a horrific injury.

[DS Oliver]
I actually visited Anisah in hospital

and spoke to her about what had happened.

What struck me was that she was so calm

and clearly
in a lot of pain from her injury.

So I said, "Well, who stabbed you?"
And she said, "My boyfriend."

Did you see anybody running away at all?
Anything like that?

- No.
- Anyone who might have actually done it.

- You didn't see anybody else?
- No.

[Angie] I spoke to the 999 caller.

I sat and I just held her hand.

I didn't know what else to do
so I sat and I held her hand

and eventually an ambulance arrived.

[PC French] Okay,
have you got any description at all?

It was the same guy who last
threatened me with a brandishing knife.

- But you don't know his name?
- I don't.

- And your ex is Iqbal Mohammed? Okay.
- Iqbal Mohammed.

I have seen body cam footage of Anisah
in the ambulance

where all she can do is say,
"This was Iqbal, this was Iqbal."

[Iqbal] On the same day,

a couple of police officers
had come to our apartment

to check on us, which was really odd.

They came in,
they insisted on seeing Lubna,

because I said,
"Oh, yeah, she's fine, she's here."

They insisted on seeing her.
They didn't tell us why,

why they wanted to see her.

We didn't know
anything about the stabbing.

So we were totally confused...
why... what was going on.

[atmospheric music]

[DS Parsons] The stabbing had taken place

about half a kilometer up the road
from where the car was parked.

Anisah's saying
she was stabbed outside the car.

I can find no blood anywhere else.

Only blood is in the car.

We're being told
that the injury has happened

outside of the vehicle,

but we can find
no blood outside of the car.

I'm thinking, "I don't understand this."

I just remember the phone call
from Kevin Parsons,

and I shall never forget it
as long as I live,

and he said,

"Lee, if I were to say the name
Anisah Ahmed to you,

what would you say to me?"

I feel absolutely sexually abused by him.

All I wanted was just the truth.

All I said was, "What has she done now?"

It turns out that West Midlands Police
had already been investigating Anisah,

an incident that happened
early on that year,

where she had been
arrested for harassment.

I just want those videos
and images deleted.

- That's all it was.
- [officer] Thank you.

[DS Parsons]
There'd been an incident at a workplace

where she'd actually received
a caution for harassment.

There was an incident at
the university she got her law degree at.

[suspenseful music]

Two, three days later,

one of my team trawled CCTV
all around the area.

Anisah Ahmed had claimed
that she'd been carjacked

and that she'd driven
this particular route.

He came back with two still images
of two cars on their way to the location.

[camera shutters click]

One of those cars
was definitely Anisah's.

[camera shutters clicking]

The car in front
belonged to a gentleman

by the name of Mustafa Hussain.

[intense music]

It transpires that he is an old,
long-time associate of Anisah Ahmed.

Identifying Mustafa Hussain
was our first real breakthrough.

She's driven to this place
with someone she knows.

[intense music]

[Mustafa]
Me and Anisah were at school together.

We was in the same year.

So that's how I knew her, from there.

[camera shutter clicks]

She was a nice person.

We dated for two years
and then we broke off.

Yeah, I did love her, yeah.

She called me and then said,

"Look, if me and you
get back together, I'll look after you.

You know, you won't have any problems."

So I was like,
"So what do you want me to do, then?"

That's when she said to me,
"Oh, look, I got screwed over.

I was with this new person.

His name's Iqbal."

She mentioned that he was a bastard.
"Oh, he beat me up.

He attacked me. He sexually assaulted me."

She said that he physically raped her.

So she wanted... "Obviously,
I did need to get revenge back on him."

And that was at any cost.

And that's why I got sucked
into this plan of hers.

She mentioned emails
that he'd been sending to her

which she had created.

How she got him arrested for rape.

She says, "I've got it all under control.

He's gonna get fucked for this."

So she had...
She had a big plan.

[intense music]

[Iqbal] I got a call
from Wiltshire Police.

They explained that their investigation

into the allegations of rape
had concluded.

They were not going to proceed
with the allegations.

There was no evidence to support them,

but more importantly,
that there was actually

clear and categoric evidence to show
that these allegations were malicious.

And that was now going to
be investigated thoroughly.

I was so happy.

I was relieved because I knew now,

the spotlight had now shifted
back to Anisah.

[DS Parsons] I decided we now had enough

to arrest Anisah and Mustafa

on suspicion of conspiracy to
pervert the course of justice.

Anisah made
what we call a no comment interview,

which is, as it suggests,

every question is replied with
"No comment."

She was very calm,

obviously didn't like me.

There was just no emotion, no nothing.

As for Mustafa Hussain...

essentially he had been

roped in by Anisah.

He was besotted with Anisah.

Anisah used that.

[notification tone]

[Mustafa]
There was a lot of romantic promises.

"Yeah, well, I'll look after you.

You'll have a better life with me.
You won't be unhappy in your life again."

He talked about the GBH and the kidnap.

[Mustafa] I followed her to the village.

She got out the car and said to me,
"Have you brought the knife with you?"

And I was like, "No."

She said, "Why not?"
I said, "I'm not doing it.

I can't stab somebody. Can't stab anybody.
It's not me, I'm not a killer."

She pulled the knife out of her pocket
and I was like, "No, I don't want it.

If you die here,
how do I prove my innocence?

No one's going to believe me."

And from there she had a little tantrum,

she said,
"I knew you was going to ruin this.

I knew you was going to ruin my plan."

That made me think
she's a crazy-ass person.

It all seemed like it was a game for her.

I said, "You know what,
you carry on screaming, shouting,

I don't care. I'm gone."

And then I just got back in my car.

And I just drove off. I left the scene.

He stated he left
and Anisah was fine when he left.

So...

either Mustafa Hussain did it...

or Anisah did it herself.

[intense music]

[inaudible]

[Iqbal] In November 2016,

we had a three-day trial in Northampton.

This was a civil trial
about the two injunctions.

[suspenseful music]

What the judge had to decide here was

which of the two of us were
telling the truth about the harassment.

Whether I'd threatened her?

Whether she was stabbed?

Did Iqbal harass her?

And equally,

all of the things I'd complained about,
I had to prove.

I was really grateful
for Lubna coming to court.

She was very broken
and she was very, very upset

but she stuck by her husband
and she supported him.

You know, it was emotional. It was hard.

And, um,

she was strong.

Anisah said that she was a victim

and she was terrified of me and so on

so she was behind a screen.

I represented myself.

And I had the opportunity
to cross examine her.

She was very, very intelligent.

Complete control over her emotions

and she was
quite forthright with the judge.

[suspenseful music]

After three days the trial came to an end
and the judge read out her judgment.

And it was in that moment
that I realized I'd won.

[Saima] That was a relief,
absolute relief because

it was so intense.

You know, it was such a horrible time.

The judge came back and said
I didn't kidnap anyone.

I didn't stab Anisah.

The judge found that
Anisah had lied about what she'd said

to get the injunction against Iqbal.

[Iqbal] I didn't threaten to kill her.

I didn't do any of the things

that she then fabricated me doing.

It was really overwhelming
and I j...

I just burst into tears.

I mean, sobbing tears.

I just believe
it was all-consuming.

Anisah Ahmed's passion
was to exact revenge upon Mr. Mohammed.

It was finally possible to see

at the very end of the tunnel somewhere,
you know, some light.

And that was a huge, huge sigh of relief.

[somber music]

It turns out
Anisah is going to offer guilty pleas

to include
the false allegations of rape,

the false allegations of GBH,

the false allegations of kidnap.

So the whole bang shoot.

April '21,
we had the sentencing hearing.

The judge sentenced Anisah
to life imprisonment.

[Nisar]
I've never ever come across somebody,

especially a female,

for that type of offending,

receive a life sentence.

[Iqbal] The first person I told was Lubna.

She was speechless and...

I mean, it's not--
it's not really a happy moment

in the sense that
we drew pleasure from it.

[DS Parsons] The judge thought
she was a danger to the public

and didn't think that would change.

My opinion is, he was right.

Having met Anisah a number of times,

the one word that I would describe her as
is manipulative.

[Gary] I feel as if
Anisah had used me from day one.

No one should go through
what he went through

in terms of the abuse
and the allegations,

which could, quite honestly,
have ruined his career.

[DS Oliver]
I think that Anisah's overriding goal

was to ruin Iqbal's life.

A life that she wanted to have with him.

[Saima] Now maybe she'll understand,

"Oh, my God,
it wasn't just a small thing that I did.

I put these people through absolute hell."

[Mustafa] I feel bad about Mr. Iqbal.

He cheated, he knows better for himself.

But he didn't deserve this.

I'm deeply apologetic towards him.

[DS Bennett] Nobody knows for sure

who actually inflicted that injury
upon Anisah Ahmed.

[Mustafa] I-I-I believe
she stabbed herself.

Just to prove a point.

I really do believe that
she went to that extent.

I believe, horrific as it sounds,

that Anisah did it herself.

I can't prove that,
because it was never tested in court.

We have no actual evidence of who did it.

Yeah, I absolutely believe that

she would have been quite capable of
inflicting that injury upon herself.

I think she did it herself.

She had done this to herself

because this was
the last thing available to her

to get her story taken seriously.

"Okay, so if he's explained the rape,

if he's explained the messages,

if he's got the emails, okay fine.

Well, look at this, this is genuine.

This here is
a five-inch gash across my leg.

Are you seriously going to say
I did this to myself too?"

She is dangerous.

She is really dangerous.

I know there will be people out there

who will say
he kind of brought this on himself.

I believe Iqbal had his bit on the side

and he was quite happy with that
until he got found out.

It was difficult for me to read

what the judge said about me.

She made comments that were...

that were embarrassing
and difficult for me to read.

Um, but I accept them,

because it's true.

It's not the judge's fault
that I had an affair.

That's my fault, and I own that.

Lubna and I are still married
and we're fortunate to have

a loving marriage and a strong marriage.

It was a very difficult...

thing for us,

for Lubna predominantly, um,

but for us as a couple to get through.

For the longest time
I thought I was sorry,

but actually,
I was sorry that I got caught.

And it took a long time to really
understand the gravity of what I'd done.

The betrayal of it...

the callousness of cheating on your wife.

You know, I looked at Lubna and I realized

that I was sorry
for what I'd actually done.
