the appetite.

It's like a wolf that's...

feeling the hunger.

Technology, technology,
technology.

What jumped out at
the investigators at that time

was her SIM card.

Rohrer's SIM card, or subscriber
identity module, had been taken

out of her phone and placed
into a phone owned by this man,

31-year-old Colby Delea Martin.

[woman] Van Buren County
investigators say

they found him in
a Wal-Mart parking lot.

So despite the fact that Martin
has been called back in for

questioning, he doesn't ask
authorities why he's being

taken into custody.

And yet, with a level of
confidence and calm,

he sits down,
and in this very glib,

superficially charming way,
he says to the detectives,

"You tell me your story,
and then we'll talk."

He's trying to take over
the control of the interview,

and he's playing it very cool.

And that level of arrogance
and overconfidence is also

something we see
in psychopathic

individuals sometimes.

So he's been giving
these sort of elliptical,

partial sentences,
just driving, out of nowhere.

There's not a full continuity
of ideas going on in the way

he's communicating.

And so he's being,
what we say, it's evasion.

He's not communicating
fully what his memory is

of something.

And what we know in research on
verbal evasions, when people

are lying, is they will use
these little qualifiers like

just, only -- something happened
and they're not filling it in.

Mm-hmm.

Right.

What we see sometimes in
psychopathic individuals is

a very high level
of narcissism.

And in the case of Martin,
where that narcissism leaks out

is his own arrogance that
he thought he'd come up with

this unbelievable story
that's implausible.

He'd just tell them it was
an accident, and that'd be

the end of it.

He didn't even waste the time
or brain power or energy to

think about, how do I explain
why I moved a body?

[John]
Colby Martin doesn't feel bad.

There's no evidence to suggest
that he has any real negative,

vulnerable feelings at all.

He puts the tissue up to
his face, but there are

no tears --
it's presentation.

It's all theatrics.
It's all drama.

He's got to get these
investigators on his side.

Colby is never considering
the victim in this case.

He's never considering
the husband that had to call

911 because his wife had just
gone out for a walk like

she does every day
and never came home.

[Charles]
I don't think he's worried
about any future suffering on

the part of his wife
or their kid.

If he should go to jail,
he's using it as bait.

It's an emotional lure.

It's supposed
to get the police to feel

a little bit more sorry for him.

It's pure manipulation
on his part.

He presents it as if he doesn't
even know what a SIM card

actually is, but then later in
the sequence, we see, well,

"I don't even have the push
button to get," so he knows what

a SIM card actually is.

This is part of the narrative
that he hadn't considered

because it really doesn't make
any sense why he would have

this SIM card.

So he's trying to send up
a test balloon to figure out,

can he get information from
them in order to establish

the new lie
that he needs to tell?

[officer]
Yeah.

What we'd see potentially is
somebody that in a very

manipulative and calculated way
is trying to manage

the impression
of the detectives.

That if he looks like he has
insight, if he looks like he's

acknowledging that this doesn't
look good for him and that it

makes him look like a disturbed
human being, maybe they will

appreciate the parts of him
that have been cooperative.

And he goes from that extreme
of saying, "No, I didn't,"

to, "Yes, I did,"
about washing the car.

I think it's overall perhaps
designed to elicit kind of

a frustrated response
from the police.

Like, would you finally just
tell us the truth?

Like, this is getting old.
But they never take the bait.

I think it's a really telling
line when he goes, "I wouldn't

want anyone to think
that I did it on purpose."

It doesn't mean that he didn't
do it on purpose.

He's just saying, "I don't want
people to think

I did it on purpose."

And it's a line used to
manipulate the police.

Instead of just coming clean
and doing the right thing,

Martin now turns the tables on
the detectives

and says
that they're playing him.

We see this with psychopathic
individuals, that part of

the smoke and mirrors tactic of
trying to evade detection

or evade responsibility is
to put it on everybody else.

Sometimes
they blame the victim.

Sometimes
they blame the system.

They suggest that evidence
has been planted on them,

making outlandish and wild
accusations that make

absolutely no sense.

It's the first time
his face looks like
it has a real expression.

He looks annoyed.

And I think that's because
he did have sex with her.

So he is one of those people
who would have sex

with someone
who is dead.

But it's not part
of his narrative.

And we know that people with
psychopathy have feelings that

can be really powerfully
enraged, angry, and violent.

When investigators looked at
his phone, they found very

curious and concerning search
engine pornography searches.

These kinds of things all
suggest someone who has a very,

very deviant fantasy,
sexual contact with

a dead body.

There's only so much that
a fantasy can take before

you have to know what
that actually feels like.

So now he decides that
it's time to engage in the act.

My prayer is that
the monster ball that brought

a wrecking ball to
my amazing family

will never
see freedom again.

I watched for almost two years
an individual who showed

no emotion, compassion,
or remorse to taking

someone's life.

It's never given me joy to
impose a sentence of life in

prison without even
the possibility of parole.

But in this case, it does give
me an extraordinary sense

of relief.

We didn't raise you
to be this kind of person.

Every parent's worst fear
would before for their child

to turn into
a depraved killer.
