- [Tony] Photos and
sounds that defy explanation.

(Loud deep hummimg)

- [Man] Is it some kind
of unidentified object?

- [Man 2] A plane that
was literally frozen in the air.

- [Tony] What are they?

- [Man 3] Some sort
of bizarre mutation.

- Extraordinary claims
need extraordinary proof.

- I'm Tony Harris.

And as a journalist
for more than 30 years,

I've followed the facts
where they take me.

Now I'm bringing that
spirit of investigation

to the world's strangest
sounds and images.

(Creature growling)

We'll analyze each
one with top experts.

- It's a credible case,
it's a credible video.

- [Tony] And pass a
verdict on what it is.

- This video was clearly faked.

- The proof starts now.

(Dramatic music)

- Hello, and welcome
to, "the proof is out there."

Imagine lifting a toilet lid
to find a mysterious creature

crawling out of the bowl.

Maybe you think that's funny.

Maybe you think it's scary.

But do you think it
could really happen?

Well watch this.

In October 2017, a
man is about to step into

his sister's bathroom
in alor setar, Malaysia

when he notices something
crawling out of the toilet.

The 28-year-old immediately
rushes out to tell his sister,

who whips out her camera
and captures this video.

(Speaking malay)

- [Tony] The footage shows
a strange slithering creature

emerging from the bathroom

with its head poking
out of the door.

It surveys its surroundings
before finally crawling out

onto the tiled floor.

Let's take another look.

The creature appears
to be about six feet long

with a small head, thick
body, and a short tail.

Field researcher Ken gerhard
has studied river monsters,

lake monsters, and
now sewer monsters.

- It's large, it's
slimy and black.

It's crawling out of a toilet.

That's about as bad as it gets.

People don't generally
spend a lot of time,

if any time, in a sewer.

So we really don't have
any idea of what types

of creepy crawlies
might be down there.

- [Tony] Gerhard says the
most persistent urban legend

involves the sewers
of the big apple.

- There are accounts and
rumors going back to the 1930s

that describe sizable alligators

actually living and breeding
in the New York sewer system.

There is one theory that
perhaps these were pets

that were somehow discarded
and flushed down the toilet

when they were
small and then grew

to massive sizes in the sewer.

- [Tony] Of course, not all
sewer animals are monsters.

Sometimes animals just
get stuck in the sewers,

trapped by size or circumstance.

And everything from giant
rats, feral cats, even cows

have been found in sewer
systems around the world.

And marine biologist
Dr. Shea conger

says in Southeast Asia giant
snakes turn up down there too.

- It's a really tropical
forested environment.

In fact, it's been known
that there have been

snakes that have emerged
from toilets or plumbing.

- In fact, in 2019
this 14-foot cobra

was found in a
sewer in Thailand.

Sewer creatures have been
making headlines for decades,

but it is rare to encounter

anything this big
and this disturbing.

So could this be a giant snake?

Or maybe just some
form of camera trickery?

Let's go to our video expert.

(Slow dramatic music)

- This recording has been
compressed pretty heavily.

So in layman's terms, it's
too blurry to see anything,

to be able to identify
exactly what we're seeing.

However, in terms
of authenticity

of the way that the
recording is playing

and the way that
the camera operator

is capturing this object, I
don't see anything to suggest

it's been cgied or photoshopped.

- [Tony] So if the video is
real, is this thing a snake?

Dr. Conger says
we need to consider

other slimy creatures
known to slither

across this part of the world.

- Malaysia is home to
amphibians that we call caecilians.

And these are
salamander-like animals

that don't have limbs or
any external appendages,

so they look a bit
like giant worms.

These animals can actually
get five to six feet long.

But what you have in
essence is an animal

that's only a few
inches in diameter.

And so my idea
that this could be

some sort of caecilian
goes out the window.

- [Tony] Conger has another
thought that's even grosser.

- Malaysia is pretty well
known for its leeches,

which are blood
sucking invertebrates.

But if this were a leech,

it would have to be
30 or 40 times bigger

than a known species of leach,

which I think is
really unlikely.

- [Tony] Professor Floyd
Hayes, who has been fascinated

with snakes since
childhood, is pretty sure

he knows what we're looking at.

And it's not some sort
of mythical serpent.

- There are quite
a few different

species of snakes in Malaysia.

This one appears to
be very thick bodied,

and there's not
that many species

that would look like this.

It looks a lot like a
elephant trunk snake.

- Hayes says that
the baggy skin,

which gives the impression
that it's too big for the animal,

is the telltale sign.

So our verdict?

Based on its known
habitat and size,

we think the sewer monster
is an elephant trunk snake.

And while they usually
make their homes

near rivers and lagoons,
this one chose a toilet instead.

No accounting for taste.

- Tune your shortwave
radio dial to 4625 kilohertz

and you'll hear an
eerie repetitive noise.

This mysterious station
goes by the call sign uvb-76.

But to its devoted listeners
it's known as the buzzer.

An enigmatic radio broadcast
that no one claims to run

has been transmitting a
monotonous droning sound

like this one virtually
nonstop for over five decades.

(Intermittent radio buzzing)

The buzzing is
occasionally interrupted

by a voice speaking Russian.

(Speaking in Russian)

Ryan schaum, an
amateur radio enthusiast,

runs one of many websites
devoted to the phenomenon.

- What originally got
me into the buzzer

was the mystery of it, like
who's broadcasting this,

why they are, and what
possible purpose could it have.

I did kind of get hooked to it.

So I just keep on searching
for more information about it,

hoping to find some sort
of rational explanation.

- [Tony] Investigator
chase kloetzke

says thousands of dedicated
enthusiasts like Ryan

are heating up the
Internet with talk

that the buzzer's origin
is the former Soviet union.

- They trace it back
basically to Russia.

Could be anything from
a communication device

to speak to submarines
or a coded way

to speak to spies,
their military.

- [Tony] There is another
theory that the buzzer

is part of a
nuclear-deterrent system,

a so-called dead hand station.

- The theory behind
the dead man switch

is that if Russia is
attacked and decimated,

the buzzer stops and
then nuclear weapons

are automatically deployed
in retaliation to the west.

(Bomb exploding)

- The nuclear dead hand system

is part of a longstanding policy

called mutual assured
destruction, or mad.

If all sides know nuclear
war is unwinnable,

no one will start one.

But is the buzzer
really a part of that,

or does it have another
disturbing purpose?

Let's ask the experts.

We turn to our military
expert, Tim mcmillan.

He studied the
history of the buzzer

and he's skeptical it has
anything to do with nukes.

- In 2010, the signal ceased.

Very fortunately we didn't
see the launch of any missiles.

We didn't see apocalypse.

And so that would
suggest that it's probably

not linked to some type of
nuclear detonation device.

- [Tony] So what about the
submarine signaling theory?

- When I first heard
about this buzzer,

I thought it must be
a way to communicate

with submarines
deep in the oceans.

But that requires very
low frequency transmission.

- [Tony] Elf, or extremely
low frequency waves,

can penetrate seawater
hundreds of meters deep.

At these frequencies the
signal doesn't degrade much

due to atmospheric conditions

or the depth of the ocean.

But kaku says the buzzer works

at a much higher frequency.

So he thinks it's being
used to communicate

with people on land,
but at a great distance.

- You may say to yourself, well,

why don't the Russians
simply use the Internet?

Well, the problem
with that is security.

And so you want to use
over the horizon radio

for certain kinds of
sensitive communication.

- Shortwave radio is
phenomenally good

at sending messages
past the line of sight

because these messages

actually bounce
off the ionosphere

and then come
back down to earth.

So you can shoot messages
across entire continents.

These regular
intervals of noise-

(radio buzzing)

They're basically saturating
this shortwave radio channel

so other people can hop on
the station and compete with you.

- [Tony] But why do that?

Dr. Gottesman says that
by claiming the frequency,

Russia can use it at any time
as a so-called numbers station

to send secret messages,

often hidden in a
group of numbers

as they are read out loud.

(Speaking in Russian)

And mcmillan agrees.

- It's fairly unsophisticated,
but a brilliant way

to communicate with
your deep cover spies,

who may be all the
way across the world.

- [Tony] Other countries,
including the us,

have allegedly used

so-called numbers
stations for espionage.

And if it's an old
school form of spycraft,

mcmillan says it's still useful.

- The idea of continuing
to use it today, why not?

It makes your adversaries
have to listen in

and makes them
try to crack a code

that maybe you're not
even using anymore.

But it could be something else

that we haven't even considered.

It's an unknown.

Who knows, if nothing
else, it's a mystery.

(Slow dramatic music)

- So our verdict is mixed.

We're pretty sure it's a
Russian numbers station,

but we don't know exactly
what sort of messages

it's sending, if it's currently
in use, or if it's a ruse,

or if it's just a placeholder
for the frequency.

So for now, we're just going
to have to keep listening

with anticipation
for the next big clue.

- The international
space station, or iss,

is a modern marvel
of engineering

and global cooperation.

As astronauts from
a host of nations

advance mankind's
research in space,

some eagle-eyed
earthbound viewers

believe they've spotted
aliens studying us.

(Slow dramatic
music) March of 2017,

the international space station,

250 miles above
the earth's surface.

Two astronauts are
on a routine spacewalk

to perform maintenance.

NASA flight engineer, Peggy
whitson films their mission,

and in the process captures
something out of this world.

A strange object
seems to be following.

Look closer.

It appears to be spinning
slowly as if to get a better view.

It's visible in the background

for almost the entire
seven-hour spacewalk.

Social media blows up.

Many speculate
that this is proof

of a ufo monitoring the iss.

Author and editor Brad Olsen

thinks there's an entire
et surveillance network.

Some believe the centerpiece
is a mysterious satellite

called the black knight

that avoids detection
through a cloaking device.

- The black knight satellite
flies a very peculiar rotation

around the earth
from pole to pole.

So as the earth
spins in that direction,

eventually every continent
will come underneath

where this black
knight satellite flies.

- [Tony] In 1899, famed
inventor Nikola Tesla

received a radio
transmission that some believe

was from the black knight.

And photos of a strange object,

like this one
taken from the iss,

add to the speculation
that an alien satellite

is orbiting earth.

But if there are
aliens spying on us,

no one knows exactly
what they'd hoped to learn.

- What they're using it
for, to monitor the earth,

is truly one of the greatest
mysteries of our planet.

- Now, other footage from
the iss has reinforced the idea

that strange things are
happening up in orbit.

Check this picture out.

It's from 2015, when
a British astronaut

saw three lights moving
in formation near the iss.

Now the image is tough
to see, but let's zoom in

and I will point out
what we're talking about.

It's right here, here,

and again, right here.

Strange, right?

But before we sound the alarm,

let's analyze these
images with our experts.

(Slow dramatic music)

Marc d'Antonio studies
the space walk footage

to see if the object could
be some kind of satellite.

- It actually falls into
shadow of the space station

a few points in the video.

That is something
that tells me that

it's actually fairly small

and fairly close to
the space station.

- [Tony] So maybe it's
one of the 130 million pieces

of space junk
circling the earth.

The iss sometimes has
to maneuver out of the way

to avoid being
hit by that stuff.

- If it was space junk,
you would kind of expect it

to be moving across
the surface of the earth

in a different direction.

But because they're moving at
the same speed through space,

it kind of looks like it's
something that's paralleling

the motion of the
international space station.

- [Tony] Mick west
dismisses the black knight

spy satellite theory
for the same reason.

It would follow a completely
different orbit from the iss.

And after doing
some investigating,

d'Antonio thinks this
ufo is from the iss itself.

- [Marc] This particular
object was a shield

that was supposed
to be installed,

and they dropped it by accident.

- The shield is made
of two-inch thick fabric

that's meant to protect the iss

from strikes from space junk.

As for those three
streaks of light,

d'Antonio researches
that particular iss mission

and notes there was
an interesting problem.

- There was a leak of a
liquid from the Russian sector

of the international
space station.

In the final analysis
it turns out that this

is almost definitely
just urine that leaked out

of the Russian sector of the
international space station.

- Our verdict?

The ufos were really
a fly-away shield

and some Russian urine.

Yeah, I said it.

But the space junk
problem, that's real.

In fact, NASA is
worried about something

called the Kessler syndrome

where so many
objects will be in orbit

that a collision could cause a
whole cascade of smash-ups,

producing so much clutter

it would make future
launches impossible.

Finally tonight, remember
the famous words

of honest Abe Lincoln.

There's a lot of fake
stuff on the Internet.

Okay, I made that up.

But the story behind this
next video is true, honest.

(Slow dramatic music)

It's September of 2018 and
residents of Southeast Asia

are bracing for a mega
storm, a super typhoon.

Winds up to 180 miles per
hour blast through the region

as social media is flooded
with images of the damage.

One video said to be from
the shenzhen province of China

is particularly alarming.

Watch as this commercial
airliner attempts to land

as it fights extremely
heavy crosswinds.

It seems to almost tip over.

Then it does a complete flip.

(Plane engines roaring)

- [Man] Dude, did you see that?

- [Tony] But just as it
seems like it may crash,

the pilot appears
to regain control.

The footage quickly goes viral

as it triggers many
people's worst fears of flying.

But watch again.

A number of things seem
off about this footage,

not least of which are the
supposed typhoon conditions.

- Certainly the
winds are strong,

but it doesn't look
like there's any rain

or even a ton of cloud cover.

- [Tony] Planes land in
tough crosswinds all the time.

What you're seeing here
are all verified incidents.

- The most dangerous
part of flying a plane

is takeoff and landing.

That's when you're
going to encounter things

like crosswinds or wind shears

that can really affect how you
come in or how you take off.

But I've never seen
a passenger plane

do a full barrel roll like this.

- Oh wow.

I don't know about you,

but I could watch this
video over and over again.

It's that wild.

But many people
online thought it was real.

So we decided to track
down the original source

of this footage to
get the real story.

(Slow dramatic music)

The creator of this
clip is meni tsirbas,

a filmmaker in Los Angeles.

- So this video was 100% cgi.

A cg plane, fence,
sky, everything.

- [Tony] But here's the thing,

meni never claimed
the video was real.

That was someone else.

- Somebody stole my footage.

When the video went viral,

it wasn't through my
YouTube channel.

It was through somebody
else's Facebook post.

And I only learned about it
after it got millions of views.

- [Tony] So clearly
many people were duped.

But still, could an airliner
flip like this in real life?

- Commercial planes, they're
not designed to do barrel rolls

and things that you
might see from military jets.

As the plane goes
through these rolls,

it appears to successfully
recover off camera.

That really wouldn't
be consistent with what

we would see in a
commercial plane.

You're going to
lose any propulsion

that you have at this point,

because you have a
catastrophic shift in this plane

that is designed not to do this.

- [Tony] Just to be
certain, we asked physicist

hakeem oluseyi if any
kind of weather system

could cause a plane
to flip like in this video.

- A plane maintains its
lift via the headwind, right?

It's the relative speed of
the plane going into the wind.

And if there is a crosswind,

then that will be
perpendicular to the headwind.

So it would act independently.

So it could shift the
plane side to side

independently of the
forward, back motion.

But now there's also a twist.

There's also a
rotational motion,

which is also independent.

So that's why the ideal wind
to create something like this

is a fast headwind
with a tornado

going around it in this way.

- That kind of wind would
leave a trail of destruction.

But look, in the video
the fence and tower

are intact and undisturbed.

(Slow dramatic music)

So our verdict?

There's no question,
this is a hoax.

Meni told us he
still has no idea

who passed off his cgi
project as real, or why.

But you can be sure that
when we see stuff like this,

we'll be sure to call it out.
