I wish I could share with you
guys what he told us.

But it's unspeakable.
It's unspeakable.

MALE REPORTER: Shore is now
charged with four sex murders,

dating back 17 years.

MAN: He is not remorseful.
He is an evil man.

What he did
is unspeakable.

SHORE: People are defined
by their actions.

Well, I have done a lot of
good things in my life,

but I've also done a lot of
bad things.

[theme music playing]

MAN: There's this thing inside
of me, it's like...

the appetite.

It's like a wolf that's...

filling...the hunger.

♪♪

MAN: Each victim was strangled
with a ligature wire,

sexually assaulted.

It was new technology
at a DNA lab in Dallas

that one week ago linked
Anthony Shore to one slaying.

BERRILL: He starts off
by providing his credentials

as kind of Joe Citizen,
you know, with a wife and kids.

And then says,
on the other hand,

I'm cultivating a relationship
with a minor.

The notion that
they became friends,

or more than friends,
is kind of ludicrous.

SAHNI: Shore is engaging in
grooming behavior,

what we think of classically
with pedophiles, where they are

courting their victims,
and they're building

a sense of security and trust
with their victims so that

they can go on
to victimize them.

SAHNI: This description about
his injured finger is really

a very blunt
and obvious example of how

narcissistic Anthony Shore is.

This is not a surprising
trait to see

in individuals
who are psychopathic.

RAGHAVAN: He suggests that
he did it because he panicked.

But there's something that
doesn't sit quite right

in his narrative,
because he had something

to strangle her with,
and so I don't buy it.

I think he was fantasizing
about killing

this poor young woman,

and that part of
his sexual thrill

is befriending the women.

He recognizes
that he could be

accused of rape
and kidnapping.

He doesn't want to have
this nice guy image blown.

The fact that
they never came looking

for him was probably a more
powerful reinforcer

for it to happen again,
because gee,

if he can get away
with this kind of thing,

maybe he'll give it
another shot.

SAHNI:
Because there was no fear,

there was no need to overtake
and prey on his victim,

he wasn't aroused.

His sexual arousal may be
linked to the thrill of

the chase, the thrill of
pinning down victims

who are scared,
who are fighting.

And the more they fight,
the more

he both becomes sexually
charged and aroused,

but the more angry
he becomes, also.

SHORE: I had a song

that was played on
the prison show recently,

uh, "Funk It Up"
by Saint Vitus Dance.

That was -- that was a band that
I was in for several years

- back in the '90s.
- Oh, really?

You're a music kinda guy?

- Yeah, a musician, I was --
- Play [indistinct]?

a keyboardist --
the basic gist

of the poem that I wrote
when I first got to death row,

and it still applies today
is that, uh,

you know, there
should be a rockin' band.

Um, dying is easy,
it's living that's hard.

Everyone gets
a one-way card.

So when I'm dead and on my way,
tomorrow is just another day.

And it is, for all of us.

SAHNI: Anthony Shore has
distorted his sense of self.

His private, um, narrative of
himself is that he is a man

who struggled
with fidelity issues,

when, in fact, the reality is,
he's a pedophile.

He's a psychopath,
and he's kidnapping and beating

and raping these women
and goes on to then kill them.

His detachment from reality
is disturbing.

So why does he target
young Latina girls?

He very intentionally is
targeting someone who's

vulnerable,
and we all know that

if you don't speak
good English,

you're much more vulnerable.

You're much less likely
to seek help.

Psychopaths go after
vulnerable people because

they don't want to be caught.

He responds
the way a psychopath responds,

the way a sex
offender responds.

He locks the door and keeps
her in the car, and no doubt,

her drive to fight, her drive
to survive, likely was more of

an arousal for him,

and that is really
a marker of sadism.

RAGHAVAN: This is hyper
predation and manipulation.

His story is that it's about
rejection, but he's setting up

the rejection carefully by
befriending them, and when he's

pretty sure that they've been
groomed to trust him,

he launches a provoked attack
so that they will reject him.

They're very mapped out
executions,

very carefully controlled

and they give him deep pleasure
throughout the whole thing.

SAHNI: Anthony Shore was known
as the Tourniquet Killer.

And he had the instruments
he needed

to make this more
sophisticated ligature.

Shore's choice to strangle
the victim with a tourniquet

allowed him to prolong

the victim's death
to ensure that

she was tortured, to ensure
that the death was as slow

or as fast
as he wanted it to be.

It makes him
a very sophisticated,

dangerous psychopath.

SHORE: Probably the hardest
thing in life

is to forgive oneself --
forgiving others

is pretty hard,
believe me, I know,

but to forgive yourself
is a hard role to hold,

and I finally have come to
the point where I've reached

that peace in myself.

BERRILL:
Well, aren't you lucky?

You've forgiven yourself for
killing innocent girls because

they didn't want to have
sex with you?

It's a kind of
laughable statement,

and he's saying it in
a serious manner.

SAHNI: To assume that
he's forgiven himself

would be to assume
that he ever felt bad.

He's not bothered by it.

He feels good about
who he is as a person.

You see escalation --
what could be more invasive than

entering her own home,

and then violently raping her
while she's tied up?

He's taking more risks,

and typically,
this kind of killer,

when they take more risks,

it's because it gives them
more thrill.

He's a sexual psychopath --
befriending them

and raping them is
no longer exciting.

I would even hazard a guess
that he gets

a thrill that he was able to
control himself.

This means
he's really superior.

SHORE: Even though
we live back here

on death row
or behind these walls,

there's still a quality of
life to be had.

It is beautiful.

I'm not saying there isn't
a lot of chaos and despair,

but I'm saying
that ultimately, it has

to do with the choices
you make.

I make good choices.

SAHNI:
He's getting more impulsive,

but he's also getting more
bold in the crimes

that he's committing,
because now he's just

snatching children off
the street.

He's not even trying to engage
in grooming behavior.

And he's also given into
the idea

that he's going to kill
the victims.

He's gotten
comfortable killing.

BERRILL:
His sexual perversion runs

deeper than is suggested by
the previous victims.

This is really a pre-teen,
a latency-age kid,

so it really reflects
the depravity.

SHORE: Know this --

I would love to get a stay.

I would.
That would be awesome.

But at the same time,
I'm ready for what happens next.

It's kind of like when you get
to the front of the line

at the roller coaster ride.

I'm excited to find out
what happens.

Most of us don't have

the privilege of knowing
when it's gonna happen,

so they don't prepare.

I've had time to prepare
and think about this.

This is a killer
who likes watching

his very young victims give up,

lose hope, suffer,
and watches the light

fade from their eyes.
This is a very, very cruel man.

His impulsivity was starting
to spiral out of control.

I think he was worried that he
was losing control of himself.

MAN:
Dana was discovered naked

and dead, having vanished
eight days earlier.

SANCHEZ: She was my friend.

She was something very,
very special,

and, uh, and she's gone.

One of his daughters
finally got up

the courage to talk about
the molesting history.

He would feed his daughters

hot chocolate
and was drugging them.

Shore never really had
an attachment for his children

that wasn't self-focused.

Drugging them to assure that
it went undetected all these

years, that he could
continue to molest them,

and they would never
fight back.

MAN: The man now charged
with the crime --

41-year-old
Anthony Allen Shore.

Investigators say
he confessed to carrying out

four sex slayings.

MAN: Anthony Allen Shore
for the first time

walked into the courtroom
that's likely to be

the scene
of his capital murder trial.

The killings occurred over
a nine-year span.

SHORE: It puts things
in a different perspective

when you're facing
your impending demise.

I don't want anyone
to cry on my behalf.

If anything,
throw a party.

Dying's easy --
dying is the easiest thing

any of us get to do.
Everybody has, uh, this --

I mean, everybody gets
a shot at it.

Everybody's got
a death sentence.
