My nickname is Wolf.

And I've always loved wolves
my whole entire life.

I'm totally pro-wolf everything.

And if you actually break down
the animal itself,

there's only one enemy
and that's man.

[thunder]

[Stephen] To date, I've
done 166 movies in 17 years.

It's a one-man band,
I'm doing everything.

The drive is just doing a movie,
to become another character,

to give me a reason for my wife
to make me another outfit.

It's like super human powers
and stuff like that.

It would be awesome
to have powers like that
in real life,

but there's no way.
You know this is reality,

but if I can make it in a movie
then a dream came true.

Open your mind.

[woman]
How would I describe Stephen?

I would say he's a puzzle.

There's this kind of like
larger than life persona.

I don't know how to, like,
explain Stephen Groo to someone.

I don't know.

Kind of a rough cowboy in a way,

but just without the hat
and cowboy boots.

[chuckles]

[male fan] You don't meet
many people like Steve.

Groo is eccentric.

Lythorin.

[Jared]
Eccentric people are the ones

that are the fine line
between madness and genius.

Steve Groo is a true American
do-it-yourself auteur.

[Jared] The magic
of Groo is uncontained.

There is no limit.

That's what makes him
magnificent, being a magician.

He really made me believe.

[electronic music]

Hi, I'm Stephen Groo
of Wolf Productions.

I graduated from Brigham
Young University in 2000

with a BA in Fine Arts,
emphasis on film directing.

In this workshop you
will learn helpful tips

and skills in becoming
a believable character.

[Stephen] Whenever it comes
to budgets for films,

it's whatever you can,
within reason to make it work.

So, even if I'm pinching pennies
and I have to make a movie
under five bucks,

I'm gonna
make a movie, you know.

Start looking at me
and then you're gonna
walk off to the left

and the couch is right there.

[Stephen] I just need you
more or less to move enough

and then I got you. Cut. Nice.

Literally a day
on my feature-length movies

is a 14-hour day.

My usual day, it's seven scenes
and a 148 shots in a day.

That's what I do.

I don't take a half-hour
to move the camera.

Once we get that shot, we
set up for the next shot.

When you do things and just
grab the camera and do it,

that's where
the fun is for film.

Whatever I can pull off, I do.

I just don't let
too many things get in my way.

- I know you!
- I've known three people,
you're not one of them.

You killed some people
who are close to me.

I've killed lots of people.

I'm going to...

[vampire]
I don't want to hear it.

[slams shut]

Have I in the past felt,
you know, I'm a good filmmaker?

I would say that I can still
look back at my first movie

and say, "You know what,
it was okay."

A lot of women
were freaked out about it.

And that was my target audience,

make women feel uncomfortable
in that movie.

[screams]

And so, you know,
my objective was done.

I can look at Rubi...

Rubi, that's a beautiful name.

I'm Mr. Lions.

And say, okay,

that was a crazy production,
but I pushed the envelope.

I killed a whole family,
I did massacore, massacre.

You know,
a girl's turning 18 and saw
her father's head get shot off.

Now well, why don't you
call me a...

Oh, I don't know,
"the man who shot your daddy".

[gunshots]

[crowd screaming]

[gunshots]

I look back at New Breed
and that was vampires
and everything else,

which people were like:
"Oh yeah, vampires", yeah,

but by the time I made
that second one I made everyone
feel uncomfortable in that one,

because I used
elements, that I knew,
I was gonna push the envelope.

[female voice] Come to me, Jack.

[female voice] Ah, Jack.

[female voice] Ah.

Feel me.

And so, if you look
at that way and say, well,

was I a good filmmaker?
I don't know.
Ask the audience.

[producer] What's up, man?

- How's it going?
- How's it going? Stephen Groo.

Stephen, nice to meet you.
I'm Jared.

Glad to meet you.

I've always been very
interested in meeting you.

There's something that I
really love about your passion.

My whole goal is to
give you the resources

to be passionate about
a bigger project.

So maybe,
what are some of those things?

Is there like,
a movie that you have,
that you've, like

always wanted to make
that you haven't been able to?

There you go, Unexpected Race.

I want to see that
on the big screen.
I always did.

[Stephen] It's a drama
between a mother, a father,
a daughter and then an elf.

It's a story that's original.
I've never seen elves

crossed over into
a modern day time frame.

My ideal would be an easy
million dollar budget

just for starters.

[Jared Harris] we don't know
what our budget's gonna be yet.

I think how much money we get
is going to be dependent

on the name that we get, so,
that's gonna be our first goal.

Is there any actors that you
would wanna be in the mix?

Just dream...

What would be cool,
is that the father's
played by Sam Rockwell,

Bruce Willis
to play Agent Hardman,

Jack Black would be
cool to have, because
he's a fan already.

He could play Agent Forest.

[Stephen] For 17 years
I've waited for a movie
to end up on silver screen.

If we're going to do this, I
want to have the world see it.

[music]

Now, first of all,
I want to bring up
that acting is an art form.

A lot of people out there
believe that acting and film
are not art forms,

because we're not doing
this and that, but you know,

theatre's the exact same way

just a little bit
more pronounced

with the way, that they
carry their body language,

but acting is an art form.

Just the way of
learning how to talk,

how to articulate,
how to express yourself on frame

or even how to deliver a line,

to make it seem like
you're a believable character.

I've been worried
about the finances

and I know that you've been
worried about the medical,

but all that will
be taken care of now.

Let's celebrate,
like husband and wife should.

Okay.

[somber piano music]

Mm, you like?

[Stephen] I like playing
all the main roles
in half my movies.

Elves and humans will unite.

Without their help
we will not win this fight.

I played Oryron
in theCircle of Fire,

and Riaz, the main character
in that one.

Time to Duel, I played
YU-GI-Oh and Yami Yugi.

In Twin Test,
I was the only twin in that.

Of course, played Lythorin,
in Unexpected Race,
one, two and three.

Resident Evil, my main character
was Max and then I was
Chris Redfield,

'cause Chris is awesome.

God, they shoot little children.

[three gunshots]

Of course all The Joker Shows,
I played the Joker...

[crazy laughter]

but I also played Batman.

I'm Batman!

In Rubi, I play the cousin.

He just faced the beast in
the face for the first time.

Of course, in The Campout
I play myself.

- I love movies, what can I say?
- [girl] True.

You know
I'm a psychopath killer.

Hi, Dawn.

Stephen.

The seedling, I'm one
of the main high school boys.

You all right? You okay?

One of the popular ones
that gets pwnd.

Out of my 55 music videos,
I've played in most of them.

When I would lip sync those,
there of course I was
the main characters in that.

I'll leave this life behind me ♪

I've done enough acting
to prove that I connect.

And so for once,

I wanna prove to some people
that I can direct.

[chirpy music]

By six in the morning I get up,
I go straight downstairs

and I go straight to the script.

That's where
all the magic happens.

[sound of typewriter]

Within the last three days,
I've written 66 pages.

I read it to my mom
last night and she felt
it was pretty solid.

[door rumbles]

I am stoked for how many
weapons I'm gonna have
for the special forces.

Go ahead, make my day.

Already I, I got,
you know this actress that's,

you know, interested
and someone that's well known.

Melanie Stone who is
the main star inMythica,

got a hold of me
in my Utah Wolf Productions,

she said she was interested.

So already I'm just like,
that's awesome.

I mean I don't
wanna be, "Oh my gosh",

you know but, you know
that's how I feel inside,
but it's just,

this dream is coming true.

Von Breun, I don't
believe I've had the pleasure.

And you never will.

Tell me one that will watch
a Groo movie and say
that's bad, I would say

you're right in the sense of

how standard movie structure
is supposed to go.

[electronic music]

But that's not where
entertainment comes from.

Entertainment and art
doesn't follow rules,

it doesn't come from
like a set structure.

The car you're driving,
was it your parent's?

No, thank goodness.
It was a rental.

Oh, and that's better?

Nah, my insurance will cover it.

He has his
own perspective, it's,

it's... I've never seen anyone
who has a perspective like him.

So it's, it's almost
like watching a story
from a different dimension

where it's
completely different rules.

[groaning]

Oh, absolutely.

I've seen it online, I've seen

sites that were
actually dedicated to me,
to literally rip me apart,

because I went to BYU,
because things are low budget,

because of the actors,
the way it looks, I mean,

it's just literally
trolls on acid that I've seen.

And well, since,
speaking of trolls

I was actually
compared to the movie Trolls

and Trollswas better
than my movie.

But you know what,
I, I just shrug it off

because I could buy a brand new

spanking car that was
a half million dollars

or a million,

or a ten million dollar car

and there will be
at least one person out there

that will say
that there's a scratch on it.

They will find something,
just because of either jealousy

or something in their fibers
of their body that they feel
that they have to be negative.

It's humanity, it's,
there's always going to
be opposites in everything.

But in the end,
I still made a movie.

Oftentimes people fall
in love with Steve's work,

um, because they find
a lot of humor and comedy.

But for me,
where things are funny
it's because they're shocking.

There's always a detail
injected into the dialogue,

that is spoken so casually,
that it's really disarming.

There's something
you should know.

I see it in your eyes.

What's wrong?

There was a gamma experiment

that went wrong.

Jennifer, I am the Hulk.

No.

But enough about me.

I'm doing all the chattering.

What have you been up to?

Well, you know
I went into criminal law.

It's like, what? You've been
part of a gamma ray experiment

and now you're just like
dismissing it, and,
"How about you?"

- Steve.
- Jared, what's up?

Right on time, man.

Cool, cool.

It's been a few years.

- Is this one of your children?
- That is my oldest.

What's up, dude, how...
What's your name?

- Stephen.
- Stephen?

You're in the presence
of two Stephens.

Stephen Junior, holy dang, dude.

The first time,
that I heard about Groo,

I was a film student at BYU.

One day I was
on campus walking around

and I saw a flyer.

It was a color flyer
from Kinko's that had been made.

And it said,
"If you love Steve Groo's work,

you'll love his next film,
Circle of Fire,
The Dark Lord."

And it had a picture
of Steve in like
a blonde, Legolas style wig.

And he was going like this
and he had a cloak on.

And it said, "Needed:
Ten beautiful maidens,
ten hoardsmen."

You know, it had a list
of all the characters
that they were trying to cast.

It said, "But for some roles,
a small fee may be required."

That was my first
introduction to Groo

and then I just became a fanboy.

[car door opening]

I got the room with two beds

and they said that the shower
is gonna be very refreshing.

Steve came out of film school
with probably a hundred
different films,

where I had like three or four.

To me, he's always been
inspiring in that way.

So, tell me like, what's been
going on with the film.

How is pre-production,
how was casting?

It's a 70-page script

and I'm probably gonna
go through two-thirds of it.

In three days. Really?

I've introduced Steve's work
to just about every actor

and crew person
that I've worked with.

So all of the films
that I've done over the years

as a wrap gift, generally,

I will buy a selection
of Steve's films

and give them to
the actors as wrap gifts.

I gave that to like Sam Rockwell
and Jemaine Clement.

Jack Black, when we were
working together in Nacho
Libre, um, I had a bunch.

Like I literally, after
a day of scouting,
I would decompress in the van

and watch Steve Groo's movies.

And everyone's like,
"What are you watching?
This is incredible."

And it would be like,
I'd be watching The Crown

orThe YenRi or whatever,
maybe some of his music videos.

And Jack Black immediately
became a fan.

Well, let me try something.
Let me try and call

I met Stephen here in Provo.

He didn't seem
like the other guys.

He was unique.

He was going to be making
a film called Circle of Fire.

During one of
the rehearsals, he's like,

"Oh man, the person who was
supposed to play this part,
she had a crisis."

And he's like, "Oh no,
who am I going to have
play this part in this movie?"

And he's like, "Oy, you!"

I looked at my watch
and I'm like, okay,

I need to leave in an hour.
And I ended up being really,
really late for work.

That's the first time he totally
distracted me. [laughs]

That's enough.

You're all grounded.

We try to make it sort of
like a family experience.

Jingle all the way ♪

♪ Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh ♪

I mean all my roles,
he had me play a villain.

If you could imagine,
and it was amazing.

- Freeze, Excella.
- Bravo to the Great TSAA.

I'd go: "No,
just choose someone else.

I'm sure
you can get someone else."

He goes, "No, I wanna have you."
And I go, "Oh my gosh."

You can't kill me,
I'm the only one
that knows, where Wesker is.

It turned out okay after all,

I even worked with a real gun.

[gunshot]

Oh, it was never
a dull moment, but, oh...

[man]
Assassin's Creed, take one.

Okay.

I like that he makes movies

and that he brings
me into things,

along with my bros, like,
when he makes the movies,
instead of pulling other people.

I think that's pretty cool.

- Um, sometimes.
- No.

No.

Because I run
to our school to tell.

They runned off.

I'll enjoy eating
the flesh off your bones.

Like a bad line
from a horror film.

[roaring]

He needed an extras
for one of his movies,

so I said, why not? So I did it.

And that's where I met Steve
and from there, we just kinda
gradually did things together.

[gunshots]

[Brent Schacher]
To be honest, I can't remember
all the movies I've acted in.

I just kinda helped out.

[singing "Larger Than Life"]

Did a few of
his music videos as well.

He's doing the best he can
and that's what
I like about him,

'cause he's taken nothing
and trying to make it
into something.

And that's... I like to see that.

Action.

Obviously, I want to
support him, obviously,

I want to have him
have fun and do well

and practice his art.

But yeah, some of that
is extremely hard
when you're just like,

"Um, we need that money
you're spending on that,

to pay bills."

Now, we'll take the road.

[Brent Schacher]
Steve is a dreamer.

He aspires to
do what a lot of
Americans want to do.

As far as money,
he's made nothing on his films.

Uh, if not lost money.
[chuckles]

[Stephen]
People looking in,
they look at me and say,

"Well, it's great and all
that you're making these movies

and doing these little things,

but it's been 12 years

and you can't get a job.

But you're not providing
for your family."

[Stephen] Well, I've tried.

About 2008, I thought
to go into Police Academy

and graduate with that.

That lasted for about two years

until finally after 24
departments, I finally said,

forget it, because it's
just too hard to get in.

And then I went to work for BYU,

but then, they finally

laid me off because
I wasn't a student of BYU.

And then, I decided
to go the EMT route,

to go towards the paramedic
side of things and so

I became an advanced EMT
over two years ago and

then, finally got
to the paramedics and I,
I couldn't pass the Nationals.

So, what do I do now?

The economy and my choices
that I make are not working.

[Stephen] Ok, all right,
now get your things done.

Probably that we had
a little bit more money.

We'd be in better situations,

we wouldn't have to have
so much stress in the house.

We've been blessed, anytime
that money has been tight,

someone has come and
bought one his movies,

um, to pay bills.

Someone out of the blue
called and asked me
if I wanted to sew.

So we've been blessed.

The money has been there, but
you now, there's been times,

like, oh, where is
that money gonna
come from to pay this bill?

[Stephen] I judge myself
saying that, well, you know
you went to school 17 years ago

and you're not
where you want to be.

Before you begin
your road onto becoming
a believable character,

you must first do one major
step, and that is to relax.

There's an example of what your
body needs to be positioned

when starting
the art of relaxation.

The most vital part
of relaxating is breathing.

Breathe in and breathe out.

Oohaah.

Just exhaling that,
will really help

take the stress
right out of your body.

are we ready to rock and roll?

Okay, so, um,

they probably filled you in,
so this is all review,

but now you're hearing it
from me. I'm a very fast...

Yes, always good

Yeah, I'm very fast at filming.

Um, pretty much
on the days of the shoot,

when I say, "Break for lunch",

that'd be good idea to hurry
and put your camera down

- and run to get your lunch.
- Okay.

You'll have thirty minutes
before we hit it again.

I hit it hot and hard.

When I originally did
Unexpected Racein 2003,
I did 146 shots in a day.

And one thing with me,
that I don't want you
to feel intimidated, um,

if someone has an idea
that's better than mine,
by all means, bring it up.

There's a tactful way to bring
it up depending on the...

"Well, I have a better shot
than that." Well of course,
that's not gonna happen

or I'll be like, "Really?
Let's go have a chat."

Ah, never use "sure"
or "interesting" with me.

Ah if I say, "You like it?",
it's either you don't, whatever,
don't give me a "sure".

If you've been to my,
you know, my YouTube channel,
and suddenly I'm like,

"What do you think of it?"
and if you say,
"interesting", you're fired.

- Is it all good?
- Fair enough.

Got to get out my thesaurus now,
I'm just kidding.

[Stephen] Check. Give me
a $7 million word,

I'll turn around and say,
talk simpler. Anyway...

I want natural light,
two thirds of the movie.

A lot of people think
that natural light means

you're not touching it,
it's just the sun.

One thing that I might, like,
push back and just suggest,

- so you're the director, so
in the end, it's your call.
- To use the bounce.

Is to use the bounce,
because if you're sitting here

and half of my face is blown
out, that is gonna pull me
out of the story.

If I'm watching this, I'm gonna
be like, "What's going on?
Like, where are her pores?"

Um, and so if we could
bounce something
or even just put a silk,

and I'm not saying
get three stands.

- I'm not saying...
- You're not gonna
get silks out here.

- No, I'm saying...
- The best you can get
is a bounce.

"Hollywood" it right here.
And that will help us
stay in the story,

because there is a point
where you can be so hands off

that you're hurting your story.

- I know, but...
- Because people
are pulled out of it.

Now, let me throw a thing
in too, because being that

I've made a lot of movies
in these type of areas
and there's a reason why,

it's just one,
it's beautiful, but two,
we don't have to worry

about specific people
showing up and going,

"You guys are done."

- [Lauren] Yes.
- So, just throwing that out, so.

I think he's like
definitely his own person.

He's not out to fit
into like any social norms.

These are just basic, again,

it looks like it's hidden.

You got the river,
I love streams.

Yeah and like,

from... how much are we
talking about, like,

the river play, is like another
character, it plays a like role,

- it's like, yeah.
- Symbolism.

Andy Warhol said, "Being normal
is boring", which it kind of is.

He doesn't care if he's normal,
he doesn't care if people
like his work,

he doesn't care if he's gonna
get awards and stuff.

He knows what he wants and like
he has a really unique view.

And so I'm excited to like
work with him on it.

I'm assuming that most of you
are here for two main reasons.

Alpha, you love to write
fantasy, fiction and Beta,

the character names in
your stories are suffering.

We're going to begin with
a little game which will
demonstrate a theory of mine

known as the power
of the suffix.

[Jared Hess] I'd always been
blown away with

how Steve had named
his characters in fantasy films

depending on what race they are,
what their background is.

- Oryron.
- How's Scyphous?

He was much more than a servant.

Like his brother Scyphous,
he was there when Nyola died.

When I was healing Tylius,
I could feel you.

But I will not allow Kylnor
to retrieve the circle of fire.

And what of Ephillius?

Duron, dishonored his wife.

What of Tylius?

Tylius' destiny will manifest
itself in the future.

I said, "Steve, I'd love to
incorporate this in a film

that I'm writing,

where a kid goes
to a writing workshop

about naming characters."

And he was like,
"That's, that's great."

We can add onius,

ainous or anous to just
about anything and
it becomes magical.

I'll think of a letter
and then I go from there.

My name is Derek.

I'm not interested.

I'm not into Gothic people.

[Stephen] D-names
depending on what it is,

are more darker names.

When I didNew Breed: Derek.

I wanted a name
that had a dark
undertone, you didn't know

if he was a good guy
or a bad guy.

I picked Derek.

You know,
it was close to the Devil.

"Vryce", "Vylon", you know
you got this V going on.

You know, V for vendetta.

You know it's just,
you got power behind it,

instead of Bob or Fred, saving
the princess. "Oh help me."

The name,
before you even see them,
really describes who they are.

You think of Bob and Fred,
I'm thinking of a beer-bellied
dude that's losing his hair

that's in his
late 40s, early 50s.

Tabitha, I think
of a seven year old girl
that's in a little dress.

Maybe less than that, 'cause
that sounds kinda pervish,

but a four-year old,
that's in this little
tutu or something like that.

You know, it's just,
you think of names like that.

And so if you want to add depth
to a name, you know, you don't
say that the main actress

for this drama is Felicia
or Vanessa, they're slut names.

And so you gotta, you know,
you gotta be careful
on how you name her.

Or that's just,
how my philosophy is.

Um, I do auditions
a lot differently than maybe
the ones you've done before.

- OK.
- Um, I like to get
a little bit, uh...

information from you,
to kinda get to know you,

before we do lines
and stuff like that.

Who's your favorite kid,
out of your eight,
if you had to choose one?

Um, how close to the spouses?

How close?

I can get to know someone
very quickly with my questions.

If you're given three wishes
today, you can't wish for more

and it has to be completely
selfish wishes, how
would you use them today?

Ho, ho, ho, that's a hard one.

Do you have a problem showing
skin waist up, like shirtless?

- No.
- Can I have you lift
your shirt off please?

Sure.

Okay.

It's nice to know who someone is

before they put on
that acting facade.

What do you want?

What do I want?
Oh, what do I want?

Okay! Ha, ha, I want you out!

What will you do if I leave?

What will you do?

Why are you tracking me?

Elves in general have to
be able to do a British accent

and not just some fake thing.
They have to be able to sound

like they're actually
from Britain.

And I have to say that,
because when you start getting
emotional stuff like that

and you can't pull that off

you're gonna know
that they don't know jack,

and that's what
will knock a film down.

My name is Lythorin,
and my people were elves.

My name is Lythorin...

and my people were elves.

That's number one
for mom, right?

Yeah, so I want her for the mom.

- This is number one for...
- Agent Forest.

Casting session
was beyond awesome.

I was already casting in my mind
who was gonna get what.

And I was putting them already
in the scenes, 'cause
I've shot the movie before,

so I just suddenly was
seeing the whole movie
with these people.

I think I'm gonna have
an amazing, spectacular
awesome film on my hands

when this thing is done.

You are beautiful, Eve.

Your body is in prime condition.

I met Stephen on
the audition for War in Heaven.

[AJ Parker]
Gave me the sides of what
I wanted to audition for,

which was Jesus Christ.
I did not have the beard

and they had a guy there
that looked like Jesus.

So I thought, I'm gonna
blow this, 'cause that guy,

he's gonna get the part."

I'm, I went in there anyway
just to, just to
show off my stuff

and he liked me well enough.

He's like, "You know what,
I don't see you as Jesus,

but I see you..."

And he sold me on this,
he pitched it.

"as one of the archangels".

In my mind fire was going off,
didildididddting.

You know, whatever
the musical sound of success is.

And I thought,
"Yeah, I'm gonna do that."

Who are you?

One who fought against you
from the beginning

and one who will continue
to fight you.

You have no right to be here,
he belongs to me.

He belongs not to you.

He does, he chose to sign it.

It's a binding contract.

It is only printed paper.

what I was getting into.

I think we wanted the dream,

get picked up
by some large production company

to be a name,

to get out there.

To suddenly go,

Who do we want to direct this?

give it his all.

that he would've taken
some of us along with him.

No, it was kind of
rejection after rejection

and that hurts,

but it didn't stop him.

I wish I could thank you

that we stopped seeing
kind of the reason,

why we'd wanna be involved
and who we weren't involving.

And I found that

in order to truly tell

the people that
mean the most to me,

that they are important to me,

I had to make some changes.

of thinking about
the technical approach

that we want
to have for this shoot,

I have some good ideas
and I'm feeling good.

However, I, as a director,
would like to teach you
to look beyond

What I'm trying to express
is that there might be more
of a story being explained

in the background.

Stephen was an explorer,
very precocious.

He was only six when he did
a puzzle that had 695 pieces

and it was nothing to him.

You know and as he started
growing and developing,

um, he started showing
a liking for film.

I thought, "Well, you know what?
It's almost like putting
that puzzle together."

Why isn't he playing
with the other children?

He keeps to himself, because the
other children don't like him.

Stephen's had some rough times.

[Stephen] My parents divorced
when I was three,

so my mom was all I had.

And when I'd walk out he'd go,
"Are you gonna come back, Mom?"

Sometimes I felt like
we were on a little life raft.

[Stephen]
When I was in junior high,
I was bullied big time.

I was the short kid
in the school.

Everyone had a target
on my head or something saying,

"pick on him".

I was picked up off the ground,
thrown up against walls,

almost thrown through
a one and a half inched window.

He's carried a lot
through his life

and he still puts in creativity.

People, when they look at me,
they saw that I wasn't
into sports,

I just kind of
created my own world.

I don't know if it's 'cause
I was an only child

to where you know,
you have to create
a safe haven they can go to,

to, you know, write a story
or just, you know,
create another world

that is safe, but still,
you know, not shelter yourself
from what's going on in reality.

He knows what
it means to be alone.

To have to fend for yourself.

Maybe some of those hard times,
the drama that he's experienced,

which I thought
was really grueling,

might've prepared him
for what he's doing now.

I guess you could say
I was like, broken.

And so it changed my personality
to be more angered.

It changed me in such
a way that I'm the type now

where I'm just like, I just
don't take crap anymore.

It's what's made me
stronger in some places

and some areas,
probably too strong.

Yesterday was a pivotal
moment in my movie.

We lost our main actress,
Melanie Stone.

Just, uh, pretty much, uh...

a current feature film

that's gonna to take the rest
of the year pretty much.

The three major questions
is gonna be,
who's coming aboard?

Who's directing it?

And where is it going?

And if one of those is
out of sync, no investor
is gonna come on.

What makes a great story?

finding oneself, healing.

That's what this movie
is full of.

Kickstarter, I think it
was a great attempt.

It was exciting to see
numbers going up and then
it just suddenly stopped.

It failed very early
in the stages.

A lot of it has to do with
who's really your true friends

and who are actually
your true fans.

In the end it got only $135.

There's only so much
you can do with so much
money that you have.

I already made the decision
about two months ago,

that I had to drop everything,
to do everything for the movie.

I'm working extremely hard,

barely covering bills.

Stephen's working really hard
to make this movie go.

Although I'm making a movie,
it's not making money right now,

because it's film.

Film can sometimes take
two or three years

depending on where it's going.

But I don't have
two to three years.

and say, you know what,

I'm looking at all the options.

I'm seeing that money

I have to step back and say,

"Okay, can I fix this or not?"

I'm not going to risk
having my one production
that might go somewhere,

that destroys 17 years
that I worked hard for.

It's better to stop it now
before it gets any worse.

the time to do the movie.

but there was a little voice
in my head that was going,

You just have seen these films,
but you haven't...

There could be, could be
a monster diva behind
all this stuff."

My character has lived his

a strong man, a small-town man.

Likes to keep a tight watch

on his community, loved,
beloved by the community.

Maybe a little frustrated
when he has to deal with
the State Police

or any of those snotty FBI
agents who look down upon him.

He doesn't take kindly to that.

There's a certain lack of polish
that comes with doing things
super-duper fast

and that's part of their charm.

Some of the elements
are not quite up to snuff

and that only makes them
better, in a weird way.

The rougher the better
when it comes to Groo.

I just like
entertainment for people.

If I make one person smile
and one person enjoy it,
I've done my job.

Everyone else could hate it,
I could care less.

[gunshots]

of turn around on employees,

employees have been students.

When an audience sees
a character and sees them start

to do whatever it takes
to get their objectives

and they get past through
obstacles and everything,

then you're ready to become
a believable character.

- Okay.

[Stephen]
13 years, I've lived here.

Pretty much all of our kids were
born and raised mostly here

and 13 years of
my film career all here.

Today's the closing chapter.

I don't know, we're gonna
have something

that's not this big anymore,
but at least we have
a roof over our head

and that's what's
the most important.

- Where to?
- Right there.

[Stephen] Now comes
the stress of keeping
the house that we're in.

[music]

[Jared] I think a lot of
people, would look at Stephen
and see him as a starving artist

that just needs to quit
what he's doing,
and be responsible,

and find a career that's
stable and pays the bills,

so he takes that burden
off of his family.

I think it would be
a complete tragedy for him

to just stop filmmaking
altogether, because Steve,

more than anybody I've ever met,
needs filmmaking

to cope with
the tragedies of life.

[music]

[Stephen]
I now see how past experiences
can shape you into who you are.

I have learned that things
are gonna happen for a reason.

There's many people
that are gonna come into my life
at a specific time for a reason.

No matter how hard it is,
I know I'm gonna get through it.

Even though I'll whine,
I will vent,

I will do a normal human thing,
but not falter.

That's what makes us grow,
become stronger.

It's a hard road to do movies,

but that's really
what his passion is.

That's okay.

[Steve Walters] So few people
have the passion to just
go for their dreams

without ever quitting no matter
what obstacles jump in your way.

And I mean, I gotta respect that
because I've got a lot of dreams

that are definitely unfulfilled
and I'm sure we all do
watching this, so...

Man, the man goes for it.

And so, I, I dunno, I, I...

I'm, I'm attracted to passion.

[Stephen] If I died today,
people would be able to
look at all these movies

and see what I did,
with 17 years of my life.

It's kind of cool, you know,
that I can at least
leave a legacy of movies

that maybe didn't go anywhere,
but this is who I was.

You know, different faces
I put on, but there are
characters I wanted to play.

And, you know,

how many people can say that
about, you know, themselves?
