conservative Catholic vote

and the adaptive
Catholic vote.

And the traditionalists are
going to vote for the sitting

councilman unless I let his
secret indiscretions leak out.

blank slate yourself.

that I can pull campaign
financing from the developers.

or a condo tower,
hotel-- you need approvals,

and building
permits and financing.

Election time is when
they buy those approvals.

Developers pretty
much pick the winner.

Because whoever has
access to that money

can outspend their
opponents quintuple, septuple.

But sometimes you
have two opponents,

two candidates who
are equally strong.

So, if you're going to
donate 20 000 to one of them,

you donate 20 000
to the other one and then,

no matter who wins the
election, you get your approval.

Why don't you
just not do it?

You know, don't do
it, don't take the money.

That's not the moral
dilemma, that's politics 101.

You don't think it's a sin to
sell your political influence?

You're selling it off.

So, what's
the dilemma?

[sighs] The thing
is, it's not illegal.

Very few sins are illegal.

Come on, we're going to
try to hold ourselves here

to a higher
moral threshold.

Here's the moral dilemma.

I don't want the job.

I could raise 120,
160 000 dollars, easily.

It's all lined up and I
could put on a big campaign.

Or I could put on a
very humble campaign.

Throw the election,
and keep the money.

Well, I would get to spend
it then on things that I want.

On yourself?

Where does this power
come from, exactly?

That you get to
decide what is a sin,

and whether or
not God forgives.

It's from the
Gospel right, John:20.

God empowered Christ
to forgive on his behalf,

Christ empowers
his disciples.

And you're,
you're a disciple?

What did this
councilman, what'd he do?

You want me
to tell you?

Is that gonna help
you mete out my penance?

doesn't affect his job,

but if people found out about
it, it might cost him votes.

Like he's gay or he
had an affair or whatever.

I don't know how I'm supposed
to answer you if I don't know

what the secret is,
that you want to reveal.

He had a kid.

From an affair?

Just, you know, just
from his misspent youth.

An inappropriate tryst
before he got married.

But, he's never made it
public, swept it under the rug.

So it's not something that would
impact his job performance.

speaks to his character.

What does it say
about his character?

Well, how he meets or
doesn't meet, his responsibility

to people who are
dependent upon him.

You know that he doesn't
meet his responsibilities

to the child?

I don't know
what he paid for.

I just know that he's never
publicly acknowledged the child.

He's not named on
the birth certificate.

This sounds like conjecture, it
sounds like a lot of conjecture.

I know what I know.

I'm not careless
with people's lives.

How do you know when, or if,
he even knew about the child.

How do you know that, what
goes on between the two of them?

Do you think this
matters to the swing voter?

An unacknowledged love
child is a classic way

to bring
down a politician.

Or a movie star.

Or anybody, because
people don't like it.

They just don't like it.

It doesn't have anything
to do with family values.

It's, you know, who doesn't
acknowledge their own child?

He deserves
what he's got coming

and if I really wanted
that job, I would not hesitate.

If he deserves it, then
why don't you leak the secret?

Well, I might
want his job later.

consider the child?

Like how making an announcement
of paternity might affect her?

It might ruin her life.

that it would be something good,

I am going to run and
drop out and keep the money.

Campaign finance rules
state that a candidate

may earn a salary
during the campaign.

Up to what they were
making prior to the campaign.

And I was self-employed,
I was making good money

before I got
run outta town.

So I can draw ten, twelve
thousand dollars a month.

The rest on expenses.

And not really run?

I'm gonna show up.

I'm gonna go to a debate.

I might even say some
things that I wouldn't say

if I really
wanted the job.

It's just, it's good exposure.

I'm gonna have a job
lined up, before I drop out.

Before they
print the ballots.

really drink until I moved away,

to do, just to do your job.

And then you hate
everyone who made you do it.

And that is everyone.

and everyone loves you'
and then everyone hates you.

They all hate you...

and... that's
not the surprise.

Not if you have followed every
politician that came before you.

The surprise is,
you hate them back.
